I was wondering what this setting was for. It was set to 4hrs.
You can find it in settings>home>items on the bottom "Home Screen timeout"
Is it to put the phone in sleep mode? and can it save battery?
I've always wondered the same thing.

If you leave your phone with an application open for longer than this, without using the phone, you will be sent back to the today screen when you activate your phone.
No and no.
Ah thanks for the info Blippe ^^
I have seen somewhere that if you uncheck it you stop the timer program that checks how long since phone is last used. This supposedly saves some power.

I know the thread title says enough but I'm going to elaborate on what I am looking for.
I am looking for a looking for a lock program with password protection similar to the one that comes on our Wizards, but without the timed lock. I want it to only lock my device when it is turned back on from sleep mode and no other time. Basically I only want to have to type a password in when the screen is turned back on and not again until I turn the screen back on again.
Does anyone know of a program with this kind of functionality? I really need this because unfortunately, I still live with my parent and my Mom likes to go through my phone and look at all my personal data like call logs and SMS. It's become a nuisance and I really want to do something about it.
Thanks in advance guys.
Dan.
What's wrong with the time out one? I think if you were to do a 0 seconds of the built in password thingy, you can have it ask for a password every time you switch it on.
The built in one will only ask you password if your phone is not used for a certain period of time. the time out function is basically from the backlight and battery time out, nothing to do with the passwor.d

Well the problem with the built in lock function is that it will lock the phone after so many seconds even if the backlight is still on and it gets annoying when I'm doing something but get sidetracked for a few seconds and then come back and have to type in the code to unlock it again, even though it never left my hand in the first place. I'll play with it a bit and see what can be done with it but from what I have seen so far, I don't really like it.
I'm pretty sure it is based on you switching off (suspend) the phone or the phone switch (suspend) off itself, because the option is "0 minutes". It can't have the phone locked after it us unused for 0 minutes.

Heh... It worked. Thanks. If I set the backlight and power options to never turn off display then it will never lock the device but once I press the power button to turn off the screen then it automatically locks the device so that you have to type in the password before you can resume playing around with the phone.
Thanks again. I had never tried that option before.
Dan.
Why is it apps like Google maps etc allow the phone to goto sleep.
Surprised they don't have the option to prevent this?
I am going to have an accident while re-swyping the phone as the screen dimm's again.
The navigation app doesn't allow the phone to go into sleep for me. Maybe it's because I always have external power when I use it, but I don't think so.

i can confirm that the nav application doesn't sleep on my HD2.. so must be the settings on your phone?
I've been using co-pilot now for a few days and given the navigation system in the Android build a go to, mine does sleep when I'm just viewing the streets and haven't activated any sort of navigation route, but when I enter a destination, it stays active, so as stated above, it could be within your settings perhaps.
You’ll need Tasker and 2 Profiles 1 for (Airplane Mode off) and 1 for (Airplane Mode On)
Profile #1
Click New…name it what ever you want & click ok…click Event then click Display & Display Off…keep Priority as is click Done
On Task Selection Click New Task and name it what every & click ok…click the + click Tasker & set…Wait 7 Sec & click Done or you can use MS. Click + again and hit NET and hit Airplane Mode and Set it to Off and hit Done
Now do the same thing for Profile #2 but on the Task part when click on Airplane Mode…instead of off…you set it to On.

hi... this i swhat i am looking for
but can you wite it in better way ?
i kinda dont understand what u mean
what part you don't get?
i think i get it, so the point is to create 2 competing profiles, one that turns airplane on and one that turns it off, both occurring 7 seconds after the display shuts off? Do I need to worry about this messing with my unit's wifi turning on and off when the display shuts off?

On the Task Selection you'll hit (New Task) there you can put whatever name you want then hit Ok. Now hit the + you get a screen (Select Action Category) hit Tasker and then hit Wait and set it 2 7sec and hit Done. Hit the + again...should take you back to the same screen...but this time hit (Net) and you'll see Airplane Mode hit that, under Set it should say Off, On or Toggle.
I'll try to post screen shot's
Give me about 30min or so and i'll pull the xml for you.
Here you go just unzip. Just import these 2 profiles.

Is the Tasker App the one in market for $6.31
Since I bought tasker for my hd2 and have the screen-turning-on-again issue on my a500 as well, i tried this. And: it does not work for me. So everyone considering to buy tasker just for this job, be warned!
Anyway, I haven't improved the profiles to the max, but turning off wifi, turning on airplane AND turning off android background sync (i do the latter by hand atm) vastly improves battery life

Have you imported the 2 profiles above and they can be seen in the Tasker window?
Then check the 2 green "ticks" by both modes and then press "apply" Tasker will say "active" in the notification bar. should work after that, ive never had any probs with it.
Hi there,
While I watch a movie on TV via multimedia dock, my atrix keeps locking up (at least three times per movie). When it happens, I unlock the screen and resume the movie which is very annoying.
Although I set up "Screen timeout" to "Never timeout", it keeps happening. Am I missing something here???
Thanks very much for your help in advance!
Try the "screenon" widget in the market just to make sure on the timeout issue.
As for the lock screen itself, the ever popular "no lock" widget is free and gets rid of the annoying lock screen...

I tried that app and it never worked. What I found is that if I change the screen lock setting to "never timeout", the screen does not get locked as long as the phone is not on multimedia dock. Does anyone have this issue?
That's a strange one. Mine never used to lock when it was on the dock.
Is your dock plugged in so your atrix is charging? If not, maybe it's some power saving mode making it shut off?
Otherwise, maybe something in the ROM you're running.
Yeah, I know. It looks like nobody has this problem. Yes, the dock is plugged in and is being charged. I found "Stay awake (Screen will never sleep while charging)" option under Developement the other day. I will check that option and see if it resolves the problem. Right now, I have to get up every 30 minutes and move the mouse around on Webtop Mode window on my TV during a movie. This is very annoying.
I have Bell's stock rom: 45.2.17.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA (2.3.4). My phone is unlcocked (on Rogers) and rooted.
in settings, you need to turn off the auto lock

I'm taking a wild guess and saying it's probably an app or something causing you grief. I've never heard of anyone else having this issue that anyone was able to replicate.
Maybe you want to look at your apps and see if you have any that might cause that kind of behaviour. Try removing them and see if it fixes your issue, if not, move on to the next app.
Or if you're really fed up, you can always try a factory reset and start from scratch.
I have the same problem on mine.
I think I found the problem. It has to do with the Security Lock and the Fingerprint scanner. Once fingerprints are entered the "Security Lock Timer" becomes disabled. Mine was set to 20 minutes. I reset it to "When display is off"
Settings->Location & Security
If "Security Lock Timer" is greyed out, you'll have to clear out your fingerprints and do the setup again.
->Change Screen Lock
Select None.
Select "Clear Stored Fingerprints"
Go back into "Change Screen Lock"
Select PIN and enter a pin.
It'll dump you back out to "Location & security"
Security lock timer should now be enabled.
Select "When display is off"
Go back into "Change screen lock" and set up your fingerprint scanner again.
See if that fixes the problem.
***EDIT*** Didn't work. Mine still engages a lock after about 20 minutes.
Setting screen lock to "None" didn't help either. Still times out in about 20 minutes (like a screensaver).
I found the solution!!!
The problem was the screen saver settings in WebTop mode. The other day, I saw a setting icon on WebTop mode and found that the screen saver was set to 30 minutes. I chaged it to 3 hours and now I can watch a movie without getting up every 30 minutes. Yeah!!!
Oh that's cool. I didn't know that.
Thanks
I tend to leave my Nexus 7 down for large periods of time then find that it is out of charge next time I go to use it.
Ideally I would like a way to have it power down after the screen has been left switched off for an hour.
Anyone got a clever solution / app?
BTW, I am rooted if that helps!
I'm guessing tasker can handle this

I looked at Tasker before but it doesn't seem to cancel the shutdown countdown when the screen comes back on within the allotted time

I don't use tasker; I use llama. There is an option to cancel the event if the conditions don't hold, thus resetting the timer when the screen turns on. You should be able to find a similar option.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
You might just need to tweak the Tasker profile.
Set up a profile based on the state of the screen being on.
Start task - define a task that waits one hour, and then if the screen is still off in one hour, power off.
*but* this is of course not enough, because it doesn't check during that whole hour. So, you also need to go into the settings of the task you created, and look into collision handling. The default is to ignore the new task. What you want instead is take the option where it aborts the existing task and starts a new one from its first action.
So now every time you sleep the tab, a countdown starts. Every time you wake it, the countdown continues but it won't actually power off if the timer passes when the screen is on. And then every time it sleeps, the countdown gets aborted and restarted.
I always kinda thought this should be a feature even on a stock ROM, since some people just don't use it that often.
