Use the front-facing camera much?
So I'm in the USA, and I see a Galaxy S-like device called the captivate coming to AT&T...
I see the AT&T version has no flash and no front-facing camera. Does anyone use the front-facing camera much? If so, what for? Self pics/mirror or actual video conversations?
Any other differences between the Galaxy S (as on Samsung's web-site) and the Captivate?
Thanks,
Manos

Depends on your situation whether you'll be using the front-facing camera for video chats or whatnot. I personally wouldn't use the front camera for much since not many people I know have front facing cameras, too and I don't really care for it.
The only difference we can see so far is a different phone design, missing front camera, and apparently the AT&T version gets a gyroscope/six-axis motion sensor aimed at gaming. The AT&T version is also a 16gb base handset but you can add a microSD card for a maximum of 32gb.
Overall, I'm looking forward to the AT&T version although I'm bummed they scrapped the front-facing camera because of principle (Competition is too close for iPhone).

What power widget is that in the center?

ooh..no led notifications??
i was expecting the little strip above the word samsung to have leds??

Actually the phone has 384000 tiny LEDs. Do you want more?
Now seriously: Since AMOLEDs only consume energy when used, it would be great if the screen (in standby) could show some small visual notification. Are you listening Samsung?

How to deal with no flash on Camera?

Hey guys,
I just joined the club yesterday....got myself a new Touch!
I gotta say ive already pimped it out with a lot of programs, but the camera I am very disappointed with......
Is there an app/program to add features so pictures dont look sooo grainy/bad when shooting in less than optimal light conditions?
Thx

Personally, I never buy a phone for the camera
I use the built in cam for quick shots when I'm out and too lazy to bring or turn on my "real" camera. Mostly, I'll take pictures of things I want to remember, like signs, flyers and ads. That's a handy trick for bargain hunters by the way.
If you really want to use this for a camera frequently (I don't blame you for not wanting to carry two devices) try to make the best of it. There's always some kind of light source, it's a matter of knowing where to place your subject to get maximum light. Try different backgrounds too, if available. Depending on the light and the subject, a lighter or darker background can make the picture clearer.
You'll still get dim photos of course, especially when taking random shots of everyday life. Two tips: 1. Learn to use the brightness/contrast controls that are available in just about any photo editor. 2. Keep your camera steady (maybe brace it against a table or a wall.)
My number one tip though, is get a dedicated digital camera from a respected brand.
I did an experiment...

I can confirm the silver around the trackpad*** IS A NOTIFICATION LED. Currently only seeing WHITE for a text. Will post a ghetto pic
We need an unboxing video from you
Try installing Gmail Notifier and testing out different colours with the trackpad light setting http://www.appbrain.com/app/gmail-notifier/com.jonasl.gmailnotifier2

Wow, really impressed with those scores. Appreciate you taking the time to upload vids for us and answer our questions btw! Some people dont realize that you arent obligated in any way to do that for us..but I for one thank you for your time.
...I guess being a phone geek like us, you know how it feels. We need our info !
That being said, how does the keyboard feel? I heard it isnt as raised as some like. Is it easy to press keys still? I like being able to touch type. I used to be so good at it I could stare my teacher/friend/date in the face and theyd never know that I was secretly text messaging like crazy. Never had any typos either

Oh I know the feeling.
They keyboard is ... Good. I sold my N1 for an Epic, and the epic has a nice 5 row-er.
The keyboard on the G2 has a "rough"ish texture to it. However it has beautiful tactile feedback and is enjoyable for sure.
Apologies for the duplicate post but could you tell us about the GSM/UMTS bands the g2 supports? I've been reading conflicting reports on it.

[pics] SGS3 Specs Revealed from Samsung mole.

Someone on reddit has a friend who works in a 'high level' position at Samsung and snapped a shot of the new SGS III.

Here's the thread:
Here's the spec's his friend has confirmed so far...
* A 4.7 inch screen that nearly takes up the whole phone, but some bezel space was needed for the camera, , speakers, mic, and so cases would fit on it. He said it WILL be HD and have a ceramic "micro arc oxidation" back.
* Quad core exynos (spelling?) 4412.
* The screen is Super Amoled Plus with HD.
* The camera is a 12 megapixel with flash.
* 2 gigs of ram.
*8 millimeters thick, and no bump this time around, just "smooth".
*2250 milla-amp/hour battery, but no wireless charging.
The thread is new so he will be updating it as he gets more info from his friend.
As always, it's best to be skeptical of new information, but, if this info is true all I have to say is HOLY FUARK!
Looks like an s2 with a sticker on the bottom.

My best guess would be specs similar to the HTC ONE X.
1.5ghz quad core (samsung may clock it slightly higher)
1gb ram, i dont see why it would go to 1.5gb or 2gb as this seems like overkill to me & not needed, ive never been close to using 1gb on my SGS2.
4.7-4.8 inch 720p screen
Overclocked Mali gpu, which would be disappointing as alot of us do that anyway.
8mp, 2mp - can't see that changing, i see no reason too
7mm thick.
Even lighter than SGS2
Ceramic back.

Isn't the back button on the wrong side too?
aosp if they do it this cant go wrong
"...it will possibly have two optional launchers, ICS with touchwiz overlay and vanilla ICS"
From the reddit thread.
All I care about is more MP in the camera....do this & I'm sold
If I helped you, please press the Thanks button
I hope it has no touchwiz. I hate touchwiz.

Samsung Galaxy S III - All Updates

On 23 April, Samsung begun a countdown for the next galaxy with an anagram.

Yesterday, the countdown finally stopped and a teaser for the upcoming galaxy was posted.
SUMMARY OF VIDEO ACCORDING TO ME----
The video begins in the wilderness showing a distant city, all lit up in the night. The camera then zooms into outer space along with text that reads ‘Where a galaxy fits perfectly into your hand’. This is a subtle hint that the phone won’t be as massive as the Galaxy Note or possibly, the Galaxy Nexus. I have a feeling Samsung may just stick to the 4.3-inch screen but with a much higher resolution. This makes perfect sense and I hope they do that.
The camera then pans out across different galaxies along with another line, ‘Your view of the world grows even wider’. This could hint at the aspect ratio of the new phone. Any Other Guess! Anyone.
Then, it goes deeper into the universe and text appears, "AS YOU GAIN THE POWER TO EXPLORE IT FREELY & SWIFTLY', this time i'm cluelss.
Here comes the funniest part, the iSheeps, which shows a herd of sheep and the line, ‘…everyone else’.
The video ends with the Samsung logo and those very same blobs of metallic paint we saw in the invite. This definitely hints to the type of material used in the chassis of the S III or if not, at least the colours it will be available in. Sadly, at this moment, we don’t have any real clue about the phone itself and looking at how Samsung is hyping their next-gen Galaxy phone, I really doubt those leaked pictures are the real deal.
It appears as if Samsung is trying to throw us off the track here into thinking that the GT-I9300 is indeed the S III, which it isn’t (at least, that’s what we hope). Only a few days are left for Samsung’s Mobile Unpacked 2012 event which will take place on May 3, so see you then.
So we let us suprise. Wow !!

I voted "don't know" it depends on a number of factors, it will have to beat the SGSII in every department for it to outsell it, price too will be a factor, many countries are in deep recession and many people cannot afford the luxury of shelling out big money on a smartphone so i hope Samsung don't vastly overcharge, €599 is far too much this is the figure that was given on the Amazon German website

Screen blemish/burn - Take a look!

Hi all,
Recently purchased an International S3 on a Vodafone UK contract.
I was surfing the internet last night and noticed a rather odd mark had appeared on the screen.
Think I might have to send it back as the mark will not disappear and is very noticable on a white background.
It also shows up on all the Red, Green and Blue screen tests in the service menu.
What do you think? The mark is on the bottom left edge!

Its not as bad as it looks likes on the Pic.
The photo was taken with an iPhone 4 and the camera of the iPhone 4 has a lens which makes the center of the pic blueish.
Your screen looks a bit purple but every SAMSUNG GALAXY SIII has this.
I see no reason to return your phone.
But does anyone have an idea what that is? It doesn't look like screen burn...what could cause that?

I have no issue with the overall colour of the screen. However, I do have a problem with the horrible piss stained mark that has appeared on the bottom left of the screen!!
Excellent!! Got my phone back today after 8 days without it.
Samsung have apparently repaired it, however I cannot check because they did not send my battery back with the phone!
Nice one Samsung, very proffesional!
To top it off they said a new battery will be sent and should be there on mon/tue next week.
Great! Another week without my phone.
Knew I should of got the iPhone...
I've had my phone a little over a month now and I've never experienced that. I also heard that the led fatigue issue wasn't so dangerous on the S3 as it was on the Galaxy Nexus and previous sAMOLED screen devices.
i had some similiar screen problems so i changed my s3 three times and all of them had the same problem with the screen so i got my money back and now i am wating on the Note 2
