Help: Evo not syncing GMAIL - EVO 4G General

Hey,
I have had my Evo for a week or so now, and LOVE IT. For some reason it all the sudden has quit syncing my Gmail Emails. If I manually open my Gmail account, and click Refresh under Menu, it will download the new emails. Other than this, its not syncing them.
I have double checked under the Sync Settings in the Settings area, and they are all set to sync.
What have I done, or not done to make this happen?
Thanks,
Bryan

Mine started doing the same thing today. Have you rooted/flashed a new Rom? I am rooted and running Fresh .3.

Stock rom, but I have run Unrevoked Root program. Thats all I have other than the stock rom, and a ton of programs.

I noticed this today as well. I thought it was just me! It seems to happen regardless of whether I'm on 3G or Wi-Fi. I'm running stock 2.1; no root. It worked perfectly from day one, and I only noticed it today. For some reason, I don't think the phone is syncing with the Google... or GMail isn't pushing it out to the Evo.

Yeah, same here. Tried playing with various settings - was syncing this morning, then quit around 10:30-ish. I'm assuming it's something on the backend and not a problem with the phones.

Yea, I am thinking the same thing, something with the Gmail Servers, if I am not the only one having the problem.
Figured it might have been something that I had installed, but I guess not.
Maybe a google techy will figure it out for us.

yep, same here. not worried about it, it'll be back

I'm glad we got this thread started. I was beginning to think I was going crazy, or my phone was at least. The last thing we need is another "problem" occurring with our phones.

Is it ok that knowing you all have the same problem makes me feel better? haha

I also noticed that my Google Account (Menu>Settings>Accounts & Sync>Google) hasn't updated in a few hours since giving it time to "work itself out." I know that if I update it manually, it'll push the Gmail through, but I don't understand why the Google sync would just stop updating on its own.

Just giving an update.
Didn't seem to get Gmail to sync today. I don't know whether this problem is isolated to a select few of us but I wanted to fix this and just resorted to resetting Gmail. I followed the instructions here, and it's been working as it should for the past few hours... I hope it lasts...
Directions: (Edit, I'm unable to post links so here are the instructions)...
Troubleshooting: Problems with sync
On Android devices, the Gmail application is automatically synced with the Gmail server, and vice versa. If you experience problems with syncing, try clearing your device's Gmail application data and doing a fresh sync with the server.
Just follow these steps:
1. Press your device's < Home > button, then press < Menu >.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Applications, then Manage applications.
4. Select Gmail Storage.
Note: If you don't see 'Gmail Storage,' press < Menu > again, then select Filter > All.
5. Select Clear data. Answer OK when prompted.
6. Return to the list of applications by pressing the < Back > button on your device.
7. Select Gmail and then select Clear data. Answer OK when prompted.
To restart your device, press and hold the < Power > or < End call > button, then select Power off. Press the < Power > or < End call > button to power on.
Your device will re-sync with the server after restarting (this may take several minutes).
If the above steps don't resolve the issue, check to see if you have any account notifications on your device.
Press your device's < Home > button, then press < Menu >. Select Notifications. If you have any system notifications about a sign-in or password error, you should make sure your account information is correct in order for Gmail to sync.

I did the same thing and mine started working fine last night also.
Still working today.

Had the same problem. I had two Gmail accounts syncing. I tried the fix above but it did not work. I removed the 2nd Gmail and did it again and then it worked. Not sure why. Wanted to post this if anyone had the problem that was not being fixed to try deleting multiple Gmail accounts.

Google Not Pushing to HTC EVO
Hey guys,
I wanted to state the fact that I am having the same problems and thought that I would get it out there.
I originally had 11 email accounts syncing with my device, and all were flawlessly pushing the mail to me as it came thought Google's servers. I have noticed that over the past few days that I have had to do this syncing manually by going into the app and pressing refresh.
I am deleting all my email accounts except the main two and forwarding all the others to the main email account.
Here is the kicker... I also have Google Voice and it has stopped syncing the text messages to me as well. I just now received a text from my sister that she sent yesterday. (Just arrived as I am typing this and it is timestamped for yesterday.)
I am testing this out to see if deleting 9 email accounts, deleting the Gmail storage through the application settings menu, and rebooting my device will help.
I do also want to add: I am utilizing the Task Killer application. I have enabled in the settings the option of viewing all of the background tasks. I have ignored everything that says Google on it, Gmail, or has the words sync in it. (Before it was killing all the apps and background tasks things.) I am on the Stock 2.1 rom and I am not rooted with my HTC EVO.
I am going to see if this works - and if it doesn't you will hear back from me.
Good luck to the rest of you guys out there experiencing the same problems with your Sprint EVO. (I still love the device and hope this is a minor bug...)

Update: Right now everything is working correctly... We will see tomorrow. Good luck guys and gals.

i started having gmail sync issues this morning. around the same time i turned off calendar sync to see how much it improved battery life.
although the box is still checked to sync, i've had to manually sync gmail all day.
i guess the next step is to re-enable calendar sync and see if that fixes it.

I've had problems with gmail auto syncing as well. This is what I've found gets things back in order..
clearing data for the gmail apps, I also clear data for the other google apps just to be safe.
Then I go into gmail and set settings>labels>inbox to "sync all"
I also learned that shutting down gtalk also breaks gmail auto sync, not signing out, stopping the app. I had sartup auditor set to prevent gtalk from starting on boot, when I let it start up on boot my gmail sync's just fine.

You are not alone. I have a friend with a BlackBerry storm from ATT which stopped syncing about the same time. It could be a problem at their end.

Still syncing today!

Mine stopped syncing yesterday around 2p mountain time, reset the phone, pulled the battery several times nothing helped. Set up a new gmail acct through the phone, that worked fine, but my original just would not sync. So I pull the battery, and pulled the sd card. Then I put it all back together and it started working. I dont know if it was coincidence or not. But yall might want to try pulling the SD card before going through a reset.

Gmail sync is busted

My Gmail sync is busted. I am not getting incoming emails nor sending outgoing mails. When i scroll down my old emails, at the point where it starts to load more older ones, I instead get a message "No connection" and "retry" button. Retry is unsuccessful.
When i go into the data and synchronization setting and manually try to sync the gmail, I get a 1-frame-flash on the bottom which flashes me a message saying "Sync is not currently experiencing problems. Please try again later".
I then add a secondary gmail account and it syncs perfectly!! But my primary one doesn't work! I can't remove my primary account and re-add it unless I do a factory reset...which I don't want to do.
I've tried a reboot and it didn't help. Anyone have any ideas?
I've got the same problem today. It seems that it's a server problem.
Server problem, even though a secondary account synced fine?
If I'm not the only one...then that makes me feel better.
I have this issue with WM
I use Google sync with WM device (My N1 should arrive tomorrow) and have had a similar (if not exact) problem. When I receive a mail from a specific sender ([email protected]) 90% of the cases it breaks the sync. I also sync that same account via IMAP on a secondary account in my WM device - just in case.. syncing every 30 minutes.. (that sync works fine) so I can use the IMAP account to delete the problematic mail.. and then, once deleted (or archived if I use the web interface) the problem is gone.
Try to find if there was a mail message you got that caused the problem. it is probably either the last synced mail or the one just after that...
Update:
The sync fixed itself this morning. It started syncing nonstop for a good hour (I'm on ATT Edge too) and I wasn't sure what it was doing, but the end result is I can now get my emails and notifications again.
On a separate note, I also noticed that now in my Gmail app, I can access every email dating back to 9/11/09. That's hundreds of emails. And If I scroll all the way to the bottom, there's no more loading earlier conversations, so 9/11/09 is the farthest back I can access my email without searching.
Does anyone know that there is such a limit to looking into past emails? Also, Anyone know why it doesn't just expose a 15-20 emails at a time like previously? Is it because once the email is exposed, it's cached somewhere and I don't need to load it anymore? If so, I'd love to know where I can delete this cache.
Some other members have experienced a similar issue with no sync. They fixed the broken sync by doing this(and this is how you can clear that cache as well)
Setting->Apps->Manage Apps-> gmail/gmail storage->clear data and cache(if you can, on my G1 I can just clear data, no cache shows)
You will probably just want to clear the gmail storage one, but doing both probably wouldn't be that big of a deal.

On older versions of Android, we could clear the cache on all Google apps... but this isn't available through the Manage Applications screen in 2.1. Not sure why Google took out this feature.. Previously if Gmail stopped synching, we would clear the cache and it would start working again. Hopefully this doesn't become an unfixable issue with 2.1.

They took it out? That sucks! Can you do the clear data at least? And I could swear I read someone with a Nexus One had this issue, and cleared the data or cache for gmail and fixed it... maybe it was in the G1 forum, starting to get confused following both at the same time.

Aha I found it! I may be an Android noob but I can still be useful.
Within Manage Apps, click hit Menu > Filter > All. This will expose all the native apps as well and you can clear your cache till the cows come home. I just found this a minute ago and cleared out my cache for my Gmail, default browser, and Youtube. That felt sooooo good, since I'm such a storage nazi.

[SOLVED] Gmail not syncing anymore

I just noticed a few days ago that GMail isn't syncing with my phone anymore. I send myself an email just to check and it never showed any notification untill I manually entered the application and updated. Of course, I'd ran this test before and it worked flawlessly. I really need this to work because I use my email a lot for work purposes.
I'm currently on CM-5.0.3.1, ERE36B. I don't really know what may have happened. Configuration to receive notifications apparently is ok. As far as I know the only thing that may have changed is the number of apps. Can there be some kind of interference between some app and GMail sync? Come on it's the Google Phone, if GMail can't work we've got a problem...
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
Go into: Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, Filter - ALL, find GMAIL and GMAIL Storage, clear data for both.
Solved! Thanks!
Hi !
Used to get these issues too on my HTC Magic (G2). Nothing wrong with my N1, but this morning, no sync (last sync seven hours ago...).
Turned everything down then restarted and it worked again.
Do you often get that? Is it a google-related issue ?

com.htc.bg and com.htc.bgp errors.

Ever since I've rooted and have flashed new custom Roms onto my Hero. A couple things have happened. The phone works fine, runs great expect for "My facebook" account not syncing with my phone. It did when i had the stock rom on it. I've tried different roms, but I'll I get is these two errors when I try and sync my contacts. My picture shows up at the top of my phone book, but no one elses gets linked.
Then I read in some forums to try other facebook accounts. So I tried my friends and her sync right up and started to download contacts pictures.....what is the deal?
How can the phone possible know the difference between facebook accounts.
any help?
The only problem I ever had was with facebook not syncing up correctly and it only happened once. I just went into the phone settings and deleted the account and readded it.
You might want to also try going into facebook from a webpage and clicking on Account -> Application Settings
Select Authorized from the drop down and then delete anything that says Facebook for Android or HTC Sense.
You may have multiple listings or the permissions might have gotten messed up. Deleting them will force the permissions to be re-established.

can you clarify in more detail on these steps? i went to facebook on the web and couldn't find those settings. i wish to complete this with successful results! mind being a bit more detailed? thx in advance
On the right hand side on facebook you will see ACCOUNT
Click on Account and select APPLICATION SETTINGS
Then on the application settings page there will be a drop down box with the title Show: select AUTHORIZED
Then you will have a page with your authorized applications. They are organized by category so you might have to click on the category to expand that section.
In the APPLICATIONS ON FACEBOOK category there will be FACEBOOK FOR ANDROID.
You might have several listings for Facebook for Android. On the far right of the row it is on there is an X.
Click on the x and click REMOVE on the popup.
Do this for every listing of Facebook For Android
Next go to the category DESKTOP APPLICATION.
You will see an entry or entries for HTC SENSE
On the far right of the row HTC Sense is on will be an X
Click on the X and select REMOVE on the popup.
Do this for every listing of HTC Sense
Then go into your phone and re-setup the accounts.
I had this error. My problem was that I had too many friends and caused it to crash while loading. I had 3,000+. I think it started to act up around 2,000
Also, if you have trouble with anything listed so far try this.
Run Logcat and sync manually in Accounts and Sync.
Watch logcat for com.htc.bg died.
If you are using a rom with the internal task killing mod (autokiller and dconfig also) set the task killer back to stock and then sync.
I've noticed this in the past that the taskkiller when set above normal will kill com.htc.bg while you're syncing. AFAIK, there is no way to change the process' "importance" or make the taskkiller ignore this prosses, but this is a verified work-around.

i think this was my problem as well. on other forums others were saying they had 300 friends only and their contacts synced up nicely. me on the other hand have 2000+ friends and about five min in that's when that damn com.htc.bg comes up and i have to force close it.
well I went into my facebook account settings, found what you where talking about. There was multiplies of the htc sense and other. So i removed my account from my phone, deleted the applications on my facebook. Logged out of facebook, removed it from my phone. Re tried....no luck.
So I went back to my facebook account. Deleted the htc sense. wiped my phone, flashed a fresh rom. skipped the set up. Synced my contacts. and then tried to sync with htc sense. No luck. plugged in my friends facebook account, synced right up within seconds....
whats the deal?

I don't use peep. com.htc.bg and bgp failures happen whenever I try and sync. Doesn't work either if I kill them before I try and sync.
I've come to the conclusion it has to be something to deal with my facebook account. The only thing "facebook sync sense" syncs with is my (name, birthday and profile pic) nothing else. But if remove my account and replace it with my friends it sync perfectly fine. Any ideas?
oh yeah it synced perfectly fine with my account back when I had the phone stock with android 1.5
found the problem. If your facebook account has a symbol in it, like mine is Irish and has a " ' " take it out save facebook. Then uninstall from phone, re sync to phone. Works. how stupid.
VERY ANNOYING
I Have to FORCE close on on those 2 constantly. there has to be a reason for it
SOMEONE SOLVE THIS...
my fb has no symbols, i can open then close fb without them starting. its totally random when they come on
It's very strange, from what I gather is that the errors appear when facebook sync is unable to sync because of it not being correctly connected with your account.
Since I've deleted the ' in my last name on my facebook account and re-added facebook sense to my phone, it synced up and downloaded all 370 contacts to my phone within a couple minutes. I've also had zero errors, etc...

The problem I'm having is the com.htc.bg process stays open when sycning calendar. This causes obex service to constantly run and keeps the phone from sleeping. I have yet to find a fix for this besides killing the obex process manually.

Issue with Gmail.. Cant figure it out

So what happens here is my Gmail is not syncing correctly. For instance right now in the top left corner it shows "5 Inbox" When everything is grey and read. It's not deleting the email from my gmail account either. When I delete the emails manually from my computer, The counter in the top left then returns to "0 Inbox" So maybe its just not deleting the email? I also used to recieve the email almost instantly. Now I will recieve emails hours late... I cant figure it out. I am running on Fresh 3.4 right now.. And I had the same problem on cyanogen 6.1 ... Any help would be great.. Thanks
Open gmail. Menu > more > settings > select which labels to sync.
Change number of days to sync up or down by one.
Have inbox set to sync all.
Go to inbox and hit refresh. It should sync now. After that set number of days to sync to 3.
I used to have this problem and since i have done this i have not had sync issues in the past three months.
Good luck.

As soon as I hit sync it brought all the mail from my inbox to the phone. I was then able to delete it... However it still didnt sync on the server... They are still inbox ...
I'm experiencing the same problem. Deleting Gmail cache from Settings >Applications helps for a day or two then it goes back to not syncing.
I do notice that everytime i do that its lasts a little longer each time. But this is a really frustrating little issue.
I'm on the latest Fresh rom. Latest Gmail version.
I actually just read the comments on Gmail app through the market. It seems a lot of people are having this issue... I hope it gets fixed soon. Its extremely annoying.
Well i tried and stated what worked for me. Hope you find your fix.

I'm having a ton of issues as well... mainly, whatever I try and send goes straight to outbox and gets tagged as "sending..." It never actually sends. HTC mail is working fine so I've just been using that.
Here's a fix:
go to Menu>Search and search for is:unread then hold-tap on each item (like to copy/paste a text box), and tap "Mark Read"
Works for me every time. It appears that the issue is that when you open and read a message in Gmail on your phone, it doesn't sync that to the server. Hopefully Google will fix it soon.
Same here, last night I read on another android phone section, to go into Settings, Sync, Uncheck sync all, then uninstall Google/Gmail account, reset phone, go back & re-add your account, sync. So far its worked for me & no more issues.

Gmail won't sync

I'm having a rather annoying issue with my Gmail account. It's my main account that the phone is setup on.
Sometimes I get emails as they come in, but most of the time, I have to open the app and refresh it to get any new messages. I've tried to redo all the sync settings but nothing seems to have worked.
Any ideas?

Have you tried going under the phone settings, then under accounts, and making sure that your android sync settings are enabled for all of the options Google gives that you want to sync, instead of just under the Gmail settings? You could maybe even try removing your entire Google account from that same accounts area in the phone settings and then just set it up all over again. That way you are doing your sync settings just like you were setting it up on your phone for the first time. Don't know if any info I give will be of any help or not, but thought it might be worth a try!! Hope you get it all figured out!!
It's one of the many broken things in the latest update from Verizon. Really wish I blocked all updates after the very first 5.1.1 update!!
