Gmail wont sync after root? - Droid Incredible General

So I successfully rooted my phone, removed abunch of bloatware, like verizonbackup, friendstream, tweeter, flickr, and a few others. but now my gmail wont sync automatically, i have to manually refresh my inbox, it doesnt seem to be "pushing" new messages to me and its getting very annoying. Is anyone else having this problem?

I think we will start seeing more and more of these issues as people root the phone and/or remove apps that they think are "bloatware".
Did you try removing and re-adding your gmail account?

I just completed rooting my phone this morning, but only removed City ID. My gmail is working normally, including giving me new mail notifications as soon as emails come in. Maybe you deleted something you shouldn't have deleted.
As an aside, why did people hate City ID so much? I deleted it because everyone else was, and because I wasn't using it, but not really sure what it does.

If you removed the verizon backup assistant you have to do a factory reset, meaning wipe all your data, this could be your issue. I seen somewhere else saying you have to do a factory reset once you remove that.

It nags every 15 days and wants $2.99 a month fee. It is useless since all it does it tell you what the city and state is associated with the caller's area code and exchange. Most everyone knows the local area code and exchanges. if it was a one time $2.99 maybe, but $2.99 a month they are crazy.

I agree. That would be irritating as hell. I have only had my phone for 3 or 4 days, so I hadn't seen any nag screens yet. Now hopefully I won't!

Oh, you will I think the cost is outrageous too, especially since all the program is doing is checking the XXX-YYY-0000 against a data base, where X is state and Y is town.
As for the OP, just go into Applications menu and clear your Gmail and Gmail Storage cache. We used to have a similar problem way back in the dark ages of 2008 G1, when rooted owners would immediately uninstall the Fave 5 application Tmo so kindly put on there, which would immediately erase all Cloud contacts AND break sync

I performed a factory reset after removing everything I didnt want, but I think I read in another post that it might have something to do with friendstream.apk, does anyone happen to have this and can host it somewhere? I'll try removing and readding the email account.

Same here.....looking for the friendstream.apk. On a side note, don't install the friendstream.apk for the evo, as it put me in a nasty reboot loop.

I too am having this issue, but it is only happening to one of my two gmail accounts, one pushes fine but the secondary account I have to manually refresh to get my email. I haven't removed any bloatware from my phone.

Count me in... Neither HTC Mail nor gmail are auto syncing on their own. If I turn OFF then back ON the auto sync (via the power widget) they sync, but any futher emails are not working.
This is on the leaked 2.2 for me

Gmail sync is busted

My Gmail sync is busted. I am not getting incoming emails nor sending outgoing mails. When i scroll down my old emails, at the point where it starts to load more older ones, I instead get a message "No connection" and "retry" button. Retry is unsuccessful.
When i go into the data and synchronization setting and manually try to sync the gmail, I get a 1-frame-flash on the bottom which flashes me a message saying "Sync is not currently experiencing problems. Please try again later".
I then add a secondary gmail account and it syncs perfectly!! But my primary one doesn't work! I can't remove my primary account and re-add it unless I do a factory reset...which I don't want to do.
I've tried a reboot and it didn't help. Anyone have any ideas?
I've got the same problem today. It seems that it's a server problem.
Server problem, even though a secondary account synced fine?
If I'm not the only one...then that makes me feel better.
I have this issue with WM
I use Google sync with WM device (My N1 should arrive tomorrow) and have had a similar (if not exact) problem. When I receive a mail from a specific sender ([email protected]) 90% of the cases it breaks the sync. I also sync that same account via IMAP on a secondary account in my WM device - just in case.. syncing every 30 minutes.. (that sync works fine) so I can use the IMAP account to delete the problematic mail.. and then, once deleted (or archived if I use the web interface) the problem is gone.
Try to find if there was a mail message you got that caused the problem. it is probably either the last synced mail or the one just after that...
Update:
The sync fixed itself this morning. It started syncing nonstop for a good hour (I'm on ATT Edge too) and I wasn't sure what it was doing, but the end result is I can now get my emails and notifications again.
On a separate note, I also noticed that now in my Gmail app, I can access every email dating back to 9/11/09. That's hundreds of emails. And If I scroll all the way to the bottom, there's no more loading earlier conversations, so 9/11/09 is the farthest back I can access my email without searching.
Does anyone know that there is such a limit to looking into past emails? Also, Anyone know why it doesn't just expose a 15-20 emails at a time like previously? Is it because once the email is exposed, it's cached somewhere and I don't need to load it anymore? If so, I'd love to know where I can delete this cache.
Some other members have experienced a similar issue with no sync. They fixed the broken sync by doing this(and this is how you can clear that cache as well)
Setting->Apps->Manage Apps-> gmail/gmail storage->clear data and cache(if you can, on my G1 I can just clear data, no cache shows)
You will probably just want to clear the gmail storage one, but doing both probably wouldn't be that big of a deal.

On older versions of Android, we could clear the cache on all Google apps... but this isn't available through the Manage Applications screen in 2.1. Not sure why Google took out this feature.. Previously if Gmail stopped synching, we would clear the cache and it would start working again. Hopefully this doesn't become an unfixable issue with 2.1.

They took it out? That sucks! Can you do the clear data at least? And I could swear I read someone with a Nexus One had this issue, and cleared the data or cache for gmail and fixed it... maybe it was in the G1 forum, starting to get confused following both at the same time.

Aha I found it! I may be an Android noob but I can still be useful.
Within Manage Apps, click hit Menu > Filter > All. This will expose all the native apps as well and you can clear your cache till the cows come home. I just found this a minute ago and cleared out my cache for my Gmail, default browser, and Youtube. That felt sooooo good, since I'm such a storage nazi.

Evo Tip for New Users - Only one chance at google account

Ok,
Just going to through this up in a thread of its own. If this info needs to be added to a newbie's thread fine, but I have not seen one.
This is a lesson learned with the Evo that as a NEW android user I was completely unaware of:
--You MUST have a GMail account. An old Google account will not work.
--You only get ONE CHANCE at entering the correct account for your phone set up.
It seems that while other android phones have tricks to work around changing accounts...the Evo does NOT. You must do the factory reset from...Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset.
YES you will lose all the screen customizations you made, all the emails you have set up, all the settings you wanted.
NO you do not lose data as all my test pictures are still there.
The GMail account must be set up BEFORE you try to add it to the phone. (This seems to be the gist of lots of stuff on internet and this is way I did it. Set it up through my old Google account before adding to the phone during the set up process.)
There you go. Very important and frustrating tip for those of us that are new to android and especially to the Evo.
....
are you sure?
you can't just got Accounts and Sync and change it there?
I can't imagine why not
You can't go to menu>settings>accounts and sync>google and remove your Google account?
if your rooted you can easily change google accounts
i found this goodie back in the hero days messing around with accounts.db
adb shell
sqlite3 /data/system/accounts.db "delete from accounts where type = 'com.google';"

No, you cannot just go Accounts and Sync...tried it. When you go into the google account you have a button below that says...'Remove Account'. When you try you get two pop-ups. First says you will lose account information. Second says you must do the factory reset.
So...anyone else want to call me a troll before they actually TRY what they are suggesting? 'Cause I tried three different approaches I found when searching. None worked.

Or maybe I just don't know any better, I don't have this problem with my phone, I've accidentally entered my Google account incorrectly and I always just re-entered it and it worked just fine.
My first post wasn't directed in any way negative. I just didn't know any better
Well, I'm pretty sure I've had my gmail account for about 3 years and it synced right up; worked on my mom's as well and then I made a new one for the dad.

Then you aren't being entirely clear on what your point is. I have no idea what you are talking about given that I know for a fact that:
A> I am usually drunk when I try roms, which usually require a full wipe and account info on 1st boot...which I usually screw up.
and most importantly,
B> That the day I got my phone I forgot my password for a good 5 minutes at radio shack and tried wrong passwords repeatedly until I got it right.
Not to mention
C> I have changed gmail accounts multiple times, even in those brief hours while I was still 100% stock.
...and I have no idea what a "google account" is otherwise. It very may well be 'a thing', but I have no idea what it is.
If I managed to evade your point, please--for the sake of the forum and your own well being--articulate it a little better.

Your Google account is basically your Gmail account. All though I do believe it is a seperat account. It also allows you to link youtube, latitude and a few other Google tools or services.
Hmmm, Home screen, menu, settings, applications, gmail and or market, then clear data, and or clear cache ... worked for me... then I had to re-enter my password and user name, ill be damned if i didn't screw it up. Not even drunk, course i didn't forget it for 10 minutes, just about 30 seconds.

That's what I assumed, but, you never know. Google is a little to smart to go for anything less than a unified ID. Having a handful of disparate and overlapping accounts (and their associated 'sign up process') seems like an annoying waste of time, storage and bandwidth.
Btw, I'm not trying to be a ****. If you are in fact having these issues it may be an isolated incident.
I had the same issue as the original poster. I believe what is being said is that the "google" account you enter the very first time, is the one used for your identity on the phone, and to change it requires a factory reset on the Evo.
Personally I have 3 google accounts, one is gmail and the other two are google apps. All of my contacts are under a google apps account.
Well, turns out, if you enter your gmail account not knowing the difference when you originally setup the phone, it stays stuck in there and won't let you change it without doing a full factory reset. I realized I needed to use my google apps account instead and had to factory reset to change it.
This is of course before I attempted any rooting fun, I had just came from WinMo on a Touch Diamond previously and hadn't read up on how any of that worked at the time.
Hope this helps clarify things.
Can't you just go to setup and redo your setup??

Well, condiering I've had my gmail account for over 3 years and used it to set my evo up with, it's not new - it was 3 years ago but it sure wasn't new when I got my evo. Therefore, an old gmail/google account works just fine.
And, I just added me other gmail account without any problems. Gave me the options to sync mail, contacts, ect., too.
I think were missing your point here...or something.

I know what you mean, in a way. I guess it just depends on the person and the what your needs are. iGoogle for instance, you can set up your own home page, you can add all kinds of different widgets like latitude, translate, local search, wiki, tv guide. You can be updated when concerts and such are appear in your town. I love latitude, I just link it to my phone, if anyone ever stole my phone I could just go to my google page on my pc and id automatically know the location and I'm pretty sure theres a free service for this same thing that adds the ability to send messages, not texts, to the phone and wipe it if you want. Pretty dang useful if you ask me. I love it, I just open mozilla and everything is there, mail, rss feeds and news, weather everything

Can't send or recieve pics through text...

For some reason I can't receive or send pics through my text messages anymore on my EVO Shift. It used to do it just fine but for the past month or so it wont do it. I went to Sprint and the CSR tried to update a few things and even tried to send a pic to me from her phone and it wouldn't do it. She said I need to take it to a repair store... but my phone isn't broken!! I have never dropped it, never scratched it and have never had it near water.
I run Lookout (free), JuiceDefender (free), Launcher Pro (free), FW (free) clock widget, Apps2SD, Some icons I downloaded from this site, and that's pretty much it. Everything else with this phone is working flawlessly and I have no problem getting pics through my mail on the phone. The Micro SD card was upgraded a while back from 2gig to an 8gig. Any experts out there that might know what's going on? Do I need to remove some apps?
I don't know why juice defender?? The Shift has a great battery as it is.
No need for such apps.
I got the feeling that it is juice defender what is causing your troubles since usually those apps shut down your data services to save battery.
Try resetting everything to default on juice defender and get rid of it.
I have only had Juicedefender for like 3 days, the issue has been ongoing for a month or more sadly

What about a data reset??
I had the same problem bro. A factory reset fixed the issue.
I think I will do the reset tonight... I need to back up all of my phone numbers though and sprint said this phone wont do it. This was an odd statement to me because when I upgraded from my Samsung Instinct S30, all of my contacts were in this new phone and all they did was activate it... no sync or hooking it up to anything.
Ugh... Well the Data Reset worked... I can now send pics through MMS. However I have lost all of my contacts. Oh well... time to start fresh lol.
UPDATE!!
Accounts and Sync... Sync your google account and BAM!! All contacts are back!
That's why I always export my contacts to my SD card. Keep that in mind

Delayed push notifications

Hi all,
Has anyone else noticed a significant delay with push notifications (namely with gmail)?
I've got my old iPhone and the Nexus 6P side by side, and at best the push notifications come in 10 seconds later than the iPhone (sometimes it can take up to 10 minutes). I've tried the push notification fix as suggested for other phones, but got no love there.
Any suggestions?

I just realized gmail only does push.
I just tested it on my Nexus 6p and it pushed a few seconds after the email was sent. At first however I had to manually refresh for the first test email, then the second test email pushed to the device.
I tested by sending a email from a icloud account on my macbook and sending to my gmail account on my phone.

It's almost as though there's some power saving feature going on once you lock the screen (this is where the delay happens, when locked).

Same here, seems strange that it's taking so long then...
Also, when deleting an email from the notification, it just keeps popping back up (i.e. not deleting). There's obviously some strange sync issue going on with gmail and exchange
I've had the same problem and haven't found a solution either. Glad to see that I'm not the only one! I posted on Reddit, but it didn't get much play. https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus6P/comments/3seyj6/delayed_gmail_syncnotifications/
To try and fix the issue, I've (in no particular order):
Removed my Google account and readded
Gone through Gmail settings to make sure that notifications are on, sync is active, managed labels
Gone through the Google account to make sure that Gmail sync is on
Restarted
Uninstalled updates to Gmail from the Play Store
Reinstalled updates to Gmail from the Play Store
Force Stopped Gmail
Cleared data from Gmail
Cleared cache from Gmail
Removed it from optimized apps
Changed my password on computer, then waited for phone to ask to reinput
I'm on a 64 GB Aluminum, unlocked, MDB08M. I do not have my SIM card yet (only Wi-Fi). Perhaps that's the issue?
I'm getting to the point where I'm going to factory reset, but I was really hoping I wouldn't have to, and I'm not optimistic it would help.

Yeah I've done the factory reset already and can confirm it does nothing. I'm beginning to think its the Gmail app, as the rest of my push notifications are faster or the same speed as iOS. Really crap by the Gmail devs if that is the case.
Any decent replacement email apps out there? The Samsung email app was quicker, but not sure if we can get that without rooting and flashing an apk (and even then not sure if it requires touchwiz to function).
With my 6P Hotspoting to tablet and pc email arrives on 6P a minute or 2 after them.
I don't know if this is the same or not. I have this issue with both the Yahoo mail app and the Outlook app. My gmail notifications seem to be showing up reliably, but I never get any Outlook notifications, and Yahoo's are sporadic--one our of every three or four. When I open either app, it then seems to go fetch the incoming emails. On my previous phone, when I open the app, they're already there. I don't believe I have anything set differently in the apps. I would love to figure this out.
So, I did a factory reset and installed nothing but Outlook and Yahoo mail. Then I sent two notes to my Outlook, Yahoo, and Gmail addresses, and all three of each note arrived almost simultaneously. I guess, now, I'll start re-installing essential apps and testing.
Was looking around and saw someone posted on the official Nexus forums; if anyone here is still having the issue, please head over and +1/reply so Google can escalate the fix.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/Ayd_1TOemSE
I'm having the same issue and I've also noticed that IMs on Hangouts are ridiculously slow. You would think that Google would make sure that at least their own apps worked smoothly on their flagship device.
I think I may have solved my sync issues. In the WiFi advanced settings, I switched the WiFi frequency band from Auto to 2.4Ghz. Ever since I did that I've received notifications on my Nexus 6P just as quickly as I do on other devices.
Wow, glad I saw this thread. I've been noticing gmail is slow lately. I thought it might have been my ROM/Kernel combo. I use Inbox and it was fine up until lately. Guess it's a bug for Google to fix. I even spent time last night reflashing stock and starting fresh out of box state.
This is happening to me too..happens on gmail and as well as Google opinion rewards. It's been happening for a little over a week now...hopefully will be fixed soon..
Is it happening to everybody or just a select lucky few?

I see that lot of people are only discussing about Gmail and other mailing or hangout apps.
I on the other hand am seeing overall notification push delay across all the apps including Whatsapp, Gmail, Facebook etc. I am unrooted and no changes made whatsoever to my android marshmallow. It is also on latest OTA build.
I receive all notifications as soon as I unlock the device, but if my device is lying on a table (even when not in doze mode which means lying for less than 30 minutes) I still don't receive any notification. As soon as I unlock and turn on screen it seems like data connectivity resumed and all notifications starts to flow within 5-10 seconds without even opening those apps to refresh.
I also have not modified any other notification setting and I even tried to keep whatsapp to priority mode + no battery optimization, still Whatsapp is having hard time receiving notification if screen is turned off for more than 5 minutes..
If you are experiencing this kind of an issue and have successfully resolved it, kindly help me.
I've lost email notifications but I have read that Google know about the problem,

google contacts not pulling all contacts into phone

I went to text a few people today and their names didn't come up in my texting app. I went into my contacts app and saw that quite a few are missing. However if I log into google they are all there.
I've cleared cache and also removed/reinstalled my account but still not 100% syncing.
Any suggestions??
Just logged on to post this same thing. It seems random - some of my family members come through but not all. My wife didn't make the cut either.
What version are you on? Phone, carrier? etc?
I am on Oreo Beta, bought from sprint, on sprint network. Unlocked bootloader, obv.
I noticed this when my wife didn't show up in the text app. I text her more than everyone else combined. No solution yet.

I'm running the latest Resurrection Remix. I was only missing a few and readded them to my phone. I have duplicate contacts but at least I have em all. Must be some glitch
I show 218 contacts on the desktop and only 181 on the phone. No good. Removed google account, re-synced, nada. I'll try a factory reset later if nothing else.
I was only missing three names so it wasn't too hard to just add them. I'll deal with the duplicates and remove them once this gets worked out.
I was about to do a clean install, glad I waited to see it's not just me!!
Just did a reset and this time only 177 were imported. WTF?
I just got my phone and am running stock 7.1.1 and am seeing the same issue, 291 contacts show on the computer and on my pixel but only 278 on my essential phone. I factory reset the phone, and still the issue persists. I also removed the account form the phone and re-added it, still same issue. Hoping somebody figures this out
THANK GOODNESS FOR THIS FORUM. I thought I was going insane. I noticed the same thing. Some of my closest, oldest friends were suddenly missing when they texted me. I looked in the contacts app on my desktop on the browser and they are all there. It's just on my phone that they are missing. I tried everything, restarting, uninstalling, clearing cache, etc. So odd! Is this a google issue or an essential issue? I'm running the oreo beta.
It seems like people running various versions are all having the same issue so it's above my pay grade to figure out what the heck is going on haha
I'll just chime in with a #metoo and leave it at that.

Same issue, latest stock update
I ended up getting mine working by unlocking the bootload, downgrading to NMI81C and then installing the Oreo beta 1. Don't know if I just got lucky or if it will work for everyone, but thought I would share.
This was happening to me as well and figured out why. Go to your computer and go into Contacts from your browser. Open one of the contacts that's not showing up on your phone from your browser and you'll see near the bottom things like "Website" and "Notes" with urls (usually to Facebook, G+). Delete those fields.
I think they're metadatas automatically generated from previous phones (for me, 6P, HTC Evo, 1+1, etc.) and for some reason, any contact info with these urls and metadata tags are not displayed in PH-1 Contacts.
I have over 500 contacts and manage them through browser... so I had to go and open every single one of them this morning and delete any additional data other than email / phone / address. I hope this makes sense.

Will check this now!
Not sure why it's only just started though as I've not changed anything

Nice find. This worked!
Just edit any contact detail on Google Contacts website and Save and it will appear on the device.
Change a birthday, or telephone number, change the nickname and it appears in the device where it was initially missing.
So I've tried putting an X at the end of the name, Save, then edit it again, Save and all is well!
So you can put back the urls. hyperlinks whatever you discovered was a problem.
