not a big surprise. probably exactly the same crappy screen adhesion problems that were leading to all the dust under the nexus screens... :/

mine is starting to do it as well, I can feel it slightly raised above the bezel

What problems will manifest due to this problem?

Dust under the screen. And you can see light leaking out of the bottom of the phone

Wow this is totally sh*tty
I just placed my order for the Evo and should be receiving it sometime this week.
I am wondering if maybe keeping the phone in a tight-fitting silicone case might help to reduce any possible "DISPLACEMENT" of the screen

glad to see this is getting media attention. i'm sick of htc and their crappy quality control. i went through this whole thing with my hero already...
and yes, my screen is coming apart too. it definitely wasn't like that when i got it last week.

If HTC continues to mass produce phones that fall apart because of faulty manufacturing...then the customers just might revolt

Dang it!!! mine starting to raise up as well I love this phone and Sprint service but I'm afraid the problem will worsen up as the time passes. I'm not the type to switch devices after every new released and perfer to hang to something until I feel it's not doing what I ask it to (still have HTC Uni, 8525, Treo 750 and Axim x51v).
This and the 30 fps capped is my only main concern about this phone, especially this screen separation (more light leakage or dust problem). The rest of the problem doesn't really bother me much such as the laggy touch input, improperly grounded screen and other problem doesn't apply to my device.
Is it worth the hassel of exchanging it hoping to get one without the screen separation or do they all have this problem? I'm hoping the newer hardware version (version 3) doesn't have this sort of problem, mine is hardware version 2. What you guys think?

I have been noticing more and more light leaking. I thought at first I was maybe just getting paranoid (still possible) but I saw a line about 1.5 cm long along the lower left side last night... That was definitely not there before.
What should I do? Would getting the TEP plan be prudent at this point, to cover this issue if/when it gets worse? Or would be the kind of thing HTC would be more... lenient about replacements?

Think the hairdryer method will work like it did on the Nexus? My nexus had this issue and the hairdryer method fixed it up permanently.

Doesn't hurt to try. If it worked on the NX-1, it might work again

Yeah I actually just tried this and it worked pretty well only a little of leakage left, I figure I'll seal it up some more when I have the time and Im pretty sure I did not hold it down long enough to let it cool effectively. but the parts that are still down work like a charm. way better than having to go back, lose all your apps, headaches of customer service, etc.

So this is the reason I see light under the buttons when their off and the screen is off, and its dark in the room? because my screen seems to be holding up well, and I have it in my pocket all day, no case or screen protectors. then again, I haven't been messing with it, trying to apply things or mods to it.

Hair dryer, bubble gum, tape and what else?! These are high-end devices (Evo Nexus One, etc) and they should NOT need a MacGyver handbook to keep them together after days of ownership. HTC needs to do right by us from the design stage period!

Dear Babies,
This is a site about hacking phones. Stop *****ing and use your brains for a change. Get some black silicon caulk from Lowes. Rub a small small amount in the crack where the buttons meet the case where the light leaks. Congratulations, your phone can now be left in the desert for 10 years and nothing will get through that seam including light... I swear, you guys can spend all day rooting phones but cant use some damn common sense to fix the hardware itself. I had tons of light leakage when i got the phone. Zero now, and you cant tell i did anything to it.

This is very true, but there seems to be a gray area when it comes to (S*** HAPPENS and a bug that can be fixed)... And it seems to get grayer everyday.....

CDMA Hero Bugs and Manufacturer Defects

I'm starting this thread as a central database for CDMA Hero owners to share defects and bugs in Hardware and Software.
My apologies if this has been addressed else-where.
Found with my Girlfriend's and my "with Google" Heros that we both have a noticeable amount of dust under the screen (glass). I thought this was addressed with rev. 2 of the phone?
Anyone one else with the same issue?
paint on case is VERY easy to chip...
I agree the finish seems a little delicate. I've been using a cheap hard plastic case since I got mine in dec. Helps alot with wear and tear, and isn't too bulky or hard to get out of my pocket.
i agree with the paint issue.
my end button is totally red not silver and red
I had a dust issue with my first (unbranded).
The first thing I did with my replacement (with google) hero was to apply an invisible shield to it. I have not noticed any dust under the screen whatsoever.
Also, although it isn't exactly pretty, I found while applying the invisible shield that it did not cover the gap between screen and button pad. As a quick fix to this I cut a thin piece of invisible shield material that was left over and applied it over the crack/screen protector/button pad protector. Just for some extra protection.
For shocks, I have the phone in the HTC silicone case. My phone has taken a number of falls/skids across the ground and stuff and this combo has protected it completely.
Edit:
Almost forgot, my original also seemed to develop a wear mark on the metal button pad finish. It was as if a part of the layer had rubbed off and tarnished in a circular pattern.
about the dust under the screen...
i contacted htc about before. the person who i emailed replied to me saying that htc has a permanent fix for the problem, so you can send it in and they'll replace/clean the screen and apply some fix to it. catch is, you have to pay for S&H and you'll go without a phone for a bit

I have a ridiculous amount of dust in the lower left hand corner of my screen... so much so that part of the screen isn't visible anymore. Do you think Sprint would just let me exchange it for a new one? Or would I still have to go through HTC?

well i e-mailed htc about this twice. the first time they said that if the dust got bad enough, i could send it to HTC and they'd repair it. they also said this:
I understand how frustrating it can be for dust to collect under the screen of your device. We have recently learned that Sprint has a process in place to resolve this issue. Please contact Sprint for the location of your nearest Sprint Service and Repair facility. They are equipped to clean your device, and in doing so will be able to keep the issue from recurring in the future. I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

That's great to hear! Nice to know it's not like my Mogul was. They just kept giving me broken phones until I bought my hero....
I had heard about the dust problem before, and was glad that I didn't have that problem yet... After reading this thread, I decided to look again.... Now I do have dust in the bottom right
It seems to me that the problem is dust entering between the keypad and the screen, and then getting up underneath of the digitizer which doesn't seem to be against the LCD, which is strange, I think. Most handhelds I've taken apart have the digitizer glued around the edges directly to the LCD. Thank god that HTC and Sprint are actually addressing this problem. If someone does know how and where this seal is applied, I'd love to know. I might be taking mine back before too long, and I always would like to know what they're going to do beforehand.

Seriously you guys should have no problem exchanging that phone in warranty without TEP IF you take it to the shop and they cant resolve your dust issue they will ship you a remanufactured phone.

This is 100% inaccurate. I'm a Sprint tech and there is no process in place for repairing Hero's with dust in the screen. Sure I can take your phone apart and blow the dust out, but it will come back.

At least it isn't near as bad as the Touch Pro. My buddy and I both had one; he still has his... His volume buttons literally fell off, and all of the chrome stripping is held on with scotch tape. The sliding screen has a slight swivel to it. And, thanks to Microsoft, all of his texts are from 1016.
Actually, I'm considering taking my Hero apart and trying to figure out a fix on my own. I think I'll wait just a little longer... just to make sure nothing fails and I can't take it back. Or, is there anywhere I can buy those black stickers for the screw-heads?
I'm surprised none of you guys have seen this yet.

Interesting, I loved my Touch Pro, the only flaking or issues with the aesthetics I had were from where it met pavement once...there's also a .cab file your friend can download that will fix the date issue...I'd post a link but I'm not sure of XDA's linking policies to other sites, just google ".cab fix for touch pro sms date," it's one of the first results.
As far as bugs and manufacturer defects with my Hero go, I've had the phone for a little over a month now and haven't anything to report...it does lag a little at times but I've yet to find a rooting process that works for my Hero for whatever reason, it's the newest version with the "with Google" branding. The "one touch root" or whatever it was titled from unlockr didn't work, nor did the one I found on android forums.
I didn't get stuck in a bootloader or anything for either process, it's simply that neither one had any affect; I did follow both process to a "T." I'll get around to trying the tutorial I found on here (XDA) one day when I have time, although I must say, I kind of prefer the hacks and tricks of WinMo at this point.

HTC Evo suffering from glass separation issues?

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/13/htc-evo-suffering-from-glass-separation-issues/
I just read that and looked at mine. The glass is separating in the lower left corner.
Thank God I have 30 days to return.
I love this phone. I can get past the 16 bit resolution. The 30 fps cap is a little hard to swallow. But now this? Sigh..
Nothing wrong with mine.
If you have it, return it for a new one. No need for drama. There is a one year warranty for defects and 30 days risk free from sprint. Pick one or the other.
Most n1's have the same issue. I checked mine when I first got it. You can check if it really is separating by pressing on the corner of the screen and if you hear clicking then you need to use a hair dryer and get the glass hot. Then press down on the screen for 1 to 2 mins. I fixed both of my n1's this way.

Since yours is fine. Does the light leak at the bottom at all? Mine has all 4 buttons leaking but the lower left brighter, since its separation there is more pronounced.

yeah, 1 yr manufaterer's warranty will fix this everytime, no charge to you, so I really would not sweat it . . .
or go pull out your hair dryer
Not having a phone for 2 months while waiting for htc to fix your phone is not going to work for me. Thats why I fixed my n1's myself.
I have this also... Slightly on the bottom corner... ugh. That iPhone is looking better and better.
Same issue here, glass is now raised above the bezel, any idea if they let you keep your sd card when you return the phone, not a big deal if not, but it'd be easier.
when you take a phone to sprint for manufaterer's warranty, they typically do not take your phone from you to repair it, they order in a replacement (typically refurbished) and you keep your phone while awaiting it's arrival. when it comes in to the store, they call you, and you bring your phone in for a swap.
wasn't knocking the blow dryer, I would probably try that before getting a replacement.

It sure does.
This happened to me once with my iPhone 3GS and I pushed it on the left corner like what its happening to the Evo, and it did the EXACT same thing. If not more.
I honestly never find out about these defects until I surf a tech site. Now I'm all paranoid. -_-;
Just like those who had the dust under the glass issue with hero's I'm sure this will be fixed in the upcoming batches.
Hope so anyway.
Checked mine and it seems not to move under pressure, possibly a tiny bit... The light only leaks if I tilt the phone and I stare down under the black towards the buttons, not sure if this is what you guys are referring to as the light leaking. No button shines more than the other either.
Damnit... I guess I'll attempt to have my phone replaced.

This is how mine is too. If i look at the screen from a top down angle i can see light on the displays. I also see i can move the screen a fraction of a millimeter if press down near the 4 home buttons, but i would have never thought it was a defect. Just seems like enough movement for a sensor to feel it or something.
I have access to two Evos and neither one of these are leaking light around the bottom left corner (or any corner). They do give in the corners a little, not anymore than my iPhone 3G, however.
Has anybody actually talked to Sprint or HTC? I want to know what they plan on doing about this. My screen also is coming loose not that much light leakage though. Also the battery cover doesn't snap on tight. I have a Google I/O phone, hardware version 2. I had problematic with the battery but once I changed it to cdma I have had no issues thus far. I hope they(sprint OR HTC) plans on doing something. Also, if you do take it back to Sprint you'll probably get a new. I doubt they have refurbished phones already. And if they did I think that would worry me. Good luck to all having issues. BTW I still love this phone.
WOW everyday an issue comes up on the EVO,what is goin on?

Has anyone noticed if you press on the glass that it moves? Is this normal?
It seems far more pronounced at the top left of the glass screen.

To true getting tired i need a holiday, but anyway what i notice is when i put my back on and press down on the back to slide it up i can hear the screen creaking as if is popping up and down on the glue
i think its a joke how the forum seems to have a "it will do" attitude. I think its pathetic how these things are built! I shouldnt have to pay £400 for something thats built poorly. Yes the screen not being flush with the plastic or the screen moving or making creaking sounds may "not bother you" but it will when three months down the line things stop working like the phone speaker which has happened to a few already. Im sure by then because they wont see this as a MAJOR fault dell will just say..you dropped it and broke it.
Need a petition because I have real OCD with this phone and i want it PERFECT!.

Nothing will ever be perfect, what a childish request. Considering how thin the Streak is, of coarse it will wear under any semi-hard conditions like sliding the battery cover on if not held properly. You may even be flexing the screen on accident in your pocket or while using.

No I dont even put it in my pocket. Iv kept it at home in its little case, reason being I use a normal phone when out and about untill I get 2.2 on there.
Fair enought I dont want it perfect but its still a ISSUE...it wont be untill people realise that all these phones mess up in a years time due to this little issue. The side can only get more and more raised it wont fix itself magically.
Its like you going to buy a brand new car and finding the front bumper is slightly out of line...are you going to just put up with it?
Its even been mentioned on some forums as maybe the reason its not released in the US. I mean people over the pond dont have the ****ty "it'll do attitude" they have the "if I dont get what I pay for I will sue" attitude which a much more prefer!
Its a HUGE defect for the screen to be dodgey and the top plastic half to be pealing off!
How are people on their 4th streak? What the hell are you doing to them?
I've had my streak for about 2-3 weeks now. No creaks, no loose fittings, no non-working speakers. not sure why i'm bothering listing things as everything about this phone is brilliant (except the camera )
Best build quality of any phone i've ever had. Good job dell i say.
Its inevitable that a phone so big and so thin will get bent and twisted and will wear as a result. With regards to the quality issue its mostlikely due to the mass production of the phone as cheaply as possible. Although I agree the quality of the streak is fantastic it's also inevitable that some will be defective
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
No problems here thus far all good
I've just watched that video where the streak is taken apart and i've come to the conclusion that its probably the glass and screen moving as one inside the case on the back. Hopefully this is the case as it would mean that the glue between the glass and screen is fully intact and could also explain the cracking the other poster was experiencing.
what the people with the "good" phones dont seem to understand is the difference between wear and just coming out of the box. These problems with the screen being flush have been since opening the box and not after use...
In a previous thread I stated how overpriced I thought the dell polyurethane case was and it is however one unexpected side effect it seems to have is the way it grips the streak seems to strengthen the device as it adds an extra rigidity to it so and it will be less likely to flex.If you carry yours in your pocket I would suggest you consider the case as it does provide protection from potential movement and flex

'Splodge' on screen

Splodge, was the only way I could describe it...take a look at the attached photo.
I'm certain I have seen someone else post this before.
It just happened randomly! Was fine all day yesterday, then picked my phone up to answer it last night, and after the phone call had ended I saw this on the screen...
Touch screen still works, and you can still see underneath it, its less visible when the back light is on. Of course when it's off, you can see the effect it has!
So...what is it? Easily fixed or what?
Like I said, I'm sure I have seen this posted by someone else before...
Hehe... nice one. It will most likely disappear if you gently pull the glass with a suction cup.
Brgds... /Tubgirl
Suction cup thing works but then it comes back.
HTC said it would be out of warrenty :S and they would have to look at it first.
O2 however, said if its in warrenty (which it is) then they will get it repaired and supply a courtesy handset while they have it.
i had one the same size it has slowly gone to half the size 5 pence piece but o2 said its not under warrenty and i work for a major phone retailer and my repairs guy said it may so im very unsure wuld have re flash it as its hspl grrr

interesting, well I'm taking it to the O2 store next week, so will see what they say, will keep the email i had off them saying they will as backup!
It has reduced in size, but still has the rainbow pattern in the middle.
I had a similar screen problem however it didnt look anywhere near as bad as yours. Mine had slight discolouration mostly noticable on white backgrounds. Pressing the screen a little bit harder than normal created the sort of effect you get when pressing the screen of a calculator (dont know what to call it) I took mine to the o2 shop with a different fault and also mentioned this fault. I got it back 6 days later but they hadnt fixed the screen problem. I sent it off again then and there and 6 days later i got a new phone.
O2 now have my HD2
Been given a nasty old Nokia phone as a temp...forgot how small some screens are...lol
should take 7-10 days they said...so fingers crossed...

LOL!
Well anyway! For me it was very random. The phone was fine all day at work, I had a phone call in the evening, after the phone call I just looked at my phone, and there it was...
Some people have said its caused my the heat of the battery and signal, dunno.
Its a very thin space between the battery and the back of the screen, so maybe thats true.
I can't see how over pressure can cause it as its a glass screen, and glass doesn't bend like plastic.
I had a smaller of these newton rings at the center. Much smaller than yours.
Suddenly one day it disappeared.
It was during summer and I thought it was probably because of the heat.

Hasn't arrived at the store yet, waiting for a phone call, fingers crossed for today! that would be exactly a week.
Hope its fixed soon for you, its interesting about the battery and heat, my hd2 gets warm below the battery and that is also below the main area your problem is on, I suspect its down to a screen fault myself.

Hopefully because I know how it feels like to be without the beloved HD2, I had to last two weeks, no matter what phone you use as a substitute, for some reason, it just cannot compare!

can somebody please tell me what this is or mean...

A friend of mine wanted me to root his Evo for him. After I rooted it, I flashed the Synergy RC1 rom on it. As I was making sure everything was working, I noticed his screen looked a little flakey (see pics). It had like this wisonsin shaped marking on the screen. It's easy to notice on light colored screens. But it's also noticable on dark color screens as well.
I don't know if his screen is going bad or if this is a case of screen tearing or whatever it's called. I never had any of those issues with any of the Evos I ever owned. So therefore, I don't know what to look for.
So nevertheless, can someone please take a look at the pics and let me know if this is a case of th screen going ad, screen tearing or something else. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So you thinking it may be water/liquid damage then?
Where is the liquid trigger/indicators on this phone. I know one is on the battery. And that one isn't pink or anything.
I also tried flashing another room and it still shows.

Keep in mind that if you get the screen wet that doesn't necessarily mean that the indicator would change if you don't get any other part of the phone wet.
However, I think it's pretty obvious it's some sort of liquid damage and I doubt Sprint would be willing to replace it.

Yeah. If I were him I would take it to Sprint just to try. Can't hurt.

My buddy just came back. He said that he hasn't never gotten the phone wet at all. And have no idea how it could be liquid damage. He's going to take it to sprint tomorrow afternoon after he gets off work.

Or if he feels comfortable taking apart electronic stuff, he could just take the phone apart and clean it. just make sure it is completely dry before putting it back together.

Well he definately don't feel comfortable doing that and neither than me... lol. It took almost an hour just to take my xbox 360 apart two night ago to fix the rings of death.
Definitely Liquid damage

I would have to say the same thing. and hey im from Wisconsin, and that doesnt look anything like a Wisconsin Map maybe Lake Winnebago or Lake Michigan but most def. not Wisconsin
Sorry to say but that's liquid damage
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
My friends evo had the exact same thing, it was from liquid damage.... His was not in the center of the screen, but it looked identical.... Sprint replaced it under his insurance for I think $50

Update:
We took the phone to Sprint yesterday and they said that it wasn't liquid damage. They said that it appeared to be a pressure point. Something apparently pressed up to hard against the screen. Nevertheless, because he had insurance, they replaced the screen free of charge.
However in doing so, they apparently broke the speaker in the earpiece and the bluetooth connection. Whenever someone calls the phone, they can hear you, but you can't hear them. They come in in very very low and the sound is distorted and sounds like static.
So he called sprint and we have to bring it back in today. They also added more minutes to his plan for the next 3 months or something like that.
