Any Ideas on How to Get an EVO for less than $450? - EVO 4G General

I'm just looking to join the dev community and do some documentation for DC. I don't need to do anything underhanded like complain to Sprint and whine for a free upgrade or whatever. Just curious to see if anyone knows how or if there are any deals that'll knock a few bucks off the non-upgrade price for me.
PS: I can also wait, I don't need the phone immediately. Looking for July sometime when they're back in stock.

There's a guy who posted earlier with thread title (evo 4g sucks), maybe he'll be inclined to sell it?

Oh yeah. I saw that thread. Maybe.
EDIT: In the words of the governator..., "NO DEAL!" He said no.

Can't imagine why he would want to keep it since it suks so bad..?

Search Bing for Wirefly. They're selling it for $480, but Bing Cashback will net you fifty dollars. In total, it will come out to $430. That isn't much of a difference, but it IS cheaper.
Or, if you're really lazy, you can follow this link: http://www.wirefly.com/eCommerce/SpecialOffer.aspx?cid=35808_4da6dc3a520b46b9832a393cf5eaa11d.

I am not sure if you have a current phone with sprint. I got the Hero in November '09 and was not quite at my upgrade. I was able to go to the sprint store and trade in my Hero for $80. So the Evo was $449 - $80 which I paid $369 for it. The good thing is November if they come out with a faster phone I will be able to sell my Evo because it is unlocked and get a new phone with the upgrade discount and it will make up the difference.

I think this is my best choice in all honesty. I have the same situation.
I COULD sell my launch HERO on eBay or Craigslist but I'm not confident that anyone would buy it for more than $100 anyway. A piece of the volume rocker cracked and some of the metallic paint is wearing on the back button.
I believe I'm also a premiere customer or whatever they call that, so yeah in October/November of this year if they release a new phone, I'd be eligible for $150 off or something.
EDIT: Another idea is to grab the EVO on Wirefly and get the $50 cash back, that's $430. Then try to give back my HERO for $80, that's roughly $350 for an EVO at that point. $350 isn't bad. It's kind of like a moron not mailing in his rebate and then ordering overnight shipping and having it delayed for 4 weeks. I could be comfortable being that moron.

I am not sure Sprint will do a trade in unless you buy the phone from them. If you decide to do this, ask to keep the battery for the hero. It is the same battery the Evo uses.

Get one for $450 and sell your previous phone to subsidize it. I got $225 for my Hero.

try this. have someone else put the phone under their name so you will get it for $199, then do a change of liability and put the phone in your name. not sure if they pay an etf cause they are transferring the contract to you. if not your all good. what i did was open up a business account and only paid 199 then i ported my old number to tmobile. 3 days later i ported it to my business account. paid an etf but only paid 199 for the phone and can sell my old phone to balance out the etf.

I ended up having to grab it off the Sprint website because Wirefly, Newegg and all the others stopped offering the phone. Unfortunately this means that I have to pay a hefty tax for the device bringing the total up to about $495 for the phone. To subsidize this though, I'm going to attempt to sell my HERO for about $100. I might even try to participate in the recycling program instead so that I can get $80 back and keep my battery/sd-card.
Either way, if I find that the phone sucks hard, I can just turn around and sell it. Also, if something more awesome comes out by October (my 1-year contract mark), I can upgrade to it and sell the EVO for a decent price.

consider this idea.. only an idea...
try Best Buy.. so they can give you instant rebate.
tell them you want to cancel your contract..pay the fee. i am guess it is $150.
get new contract.. have them port the number to new contract. get the EVO for $199.
Trade the Hero into BB for $80-100 (i have heard some have gotten $110)
if it works. 199 +150 - $100 = 250
maybe.. a shot

Wont work.
a. Unless you have another line available to add, you can't turn one off and then add a new one right away.
b. You can't port a number from a deactivated line (and usually not within the same carrier.)

I suppose one could try to pay the ETF to have Sprint at least change the contract from 2-yr to month to month. Although they'd probably be confused by this, and probably wouldn't let you do it to begin with. Then just sign up for a new plan, and start a new 2-yr contract. I really doubt that could work.
Alternatively, I suppose if one didn't want to keep their phone number...they could just ETF, and purchase the new phone and contract.
Really I'm not willing to **** around with any of that though. I was more interested to see if someone like...knew a guy who had a trick or coupon code, or had access to some kind of super secret "knock-a-few-bucks-off-for-a-friend" deal.

Evo 4G off contract price?

I see $450 being thrown about but come on, that's too good to be true. I called Best Buy and was quoted $700.

actually retail$450.$150 instant discount,u pay $300 up front then u get back $100 mail in rebate that leaves to $199 with new activation.
Wouldn't be surprised if there's a lot of misinformation floating out there, but I called a Sprint Store directly and they informed me the retail price is $449. He had to put me on hold to call corporate. $450 is ridiculous for something like this, and I still don't quite believe it.
What sucks even more is my 30 day window closes on June 2nd!! But if I can sell a brand new hero for $200 I won't mind fronting the other $250.
When the EVO was announced at CTIA I immediately signed up for news updates at the Sprint EVO site. Yesterday I received a promotional email FROM SPRINT that says "...$449.99 - $150.00 (two-year activation) - $100.00 (mail-in rebate) = $199.99 (final price).". I literally just now copy and pasted that quote from the email!
So, will Best Buy offer it at the same price or not? I'm ashamed to say, when I was there pre-ordering it this afternoon, I was assured that pre-orders were for unsubsidized phones as well as new service (or upgrades) but I forgot to ask what the non-discount price was because I assumed it was the same. Now I'm wondering...
I just pre-ordered my Evo at BestBuy today and didn't even think to ask what retail was. I just assumed it was the $450 like Sprint said.
Sure hope I'm right. I thought it was too good to be true as well but coming out of Sprint's mouth it was hard not to pay full price.
I preordered at bestbuy too.
occasionally they mess up and give me the lower out of contract price but either way...I'm buying this phone!
Return it

I have heard that what people are doing in a situation like yours, is that they are just going to return it, get another phone (like the moment or something) and then return it again for the EVO. Sure you'll have to pay restocking fees, but it will cost less then selling your Hero.
449 is probably the starting price based on signing a 2 year contract. It will likely be higher if you are going with a non-contract outright purchase. Our prices at The Shack work that way at least.
With Sprint from the past, whatever the price is before they apply the discount for new service, new line, or upgrade is usually what the price of the phone is. It is a little hard to believe this amazing phone is $450 but I've noticed one thing android phones tend to be cheaper than their WM counterparts, not always but usually. With that said I'm sure Sprints plan is to keep as many customers as possible as well as get more with this phone and they can always make it back with the cost of the plan. I also went to pre-order mines from best buy today but before I commit to it I wanted to make sure what the unsubsidized price would be but unfortunately the guy helping didn't know. He just said it would probably be about 600-700. The email as stated though says $450 so before I committed I wanted to find out what the real price will be before I commit to a higher price than what Sprint is actually selling for since I just used my upgrade in January for the Hero so I have to wait until next January. I have had the experience depending on who you deal with that even if you aren't eligble for an upgrade they would still sell you the phone at the upgrade price. Also a post above stated that they were going to get the 100 rebate still, is that even possible without it being a new activation or upgrade or were they just helping you out?
Chatted with Sprint rep today via website and confirmed...
...that the off-contract price is $449. If this turns out to be true...that's FU*KING GREAT!!! I really hope this phone ends up being the real deal. This could be an all-out effort from Sprint to extend what potentially is the hottest phone of 2010 to anyone who's interested at great price whether new customer or otherwise. Gain new customers and stop the bleeding of existing ones...makes sense.
there also seems to be a very gradual shift away from outrageous off-contract prices (FTC pressure maybe?)... nokia smartphones have been reasonably priced off contract (gsm models anyway) for some time now, and while 450 is a bit low it doesn't seem impossible.
Yeah, I'm going back to BestBuy today to cancel my preorder. Their are just too many rumors of BB charging $600+. Hopefully I will have luck on my side on June 4 when I go to the Sprint store to buy one.
$599 off contract confirmed at BB.$450 at Sprint. My Sprint store isn't doing preorders.. looks like I'll be taking the fourth off from work.

$450 from Sprint directly. Periord. End of story. Other retailers such as Best Buy and RadioShack have the ability to raise the price if they want, and it has been confirmed that Best Buy will be gouging it to $600. It has been reported that RadioShack will only charge the standard $450.
Can anyone confirm the 450 in writing from a sprint store after you paid for a pre-order?
I will go to 20 sprint stores in my area if one will do that for me.
THANKS!!

Yeah, I've printed a copy of that announcement from a link someone posted to be safe but what I'm most concerned with is trying to get a pre-order confirmed at that price. I don't want to have to wake up crazy early and then hope that they don't try to screw me that morning of by telling me they are only selling to upgrade customers since those are the people they make money off of. That could very well happen, that's exactly why I want to pre-order.
Appears that corp stores are NOT taking pre-orders. If anyone finds out different please post about your story.
Thanks
Will bb price match?

Who is still on contract and has pre-ordered?

The reason I'm asking is because I see a lot of people pre-ordering and they say it's $199. I wanted to see if anyone was still on contract or would still be on a contract by the time the Evo comes out. I wanted to see if the people on contract were still getting the phone for $199 from BB or the shack. I know the $199 is for a $150 discount with a 2 year plan and an up-front $100 rebate.
On-contract as in "not eligible for an upgrade?" I know that RadioShack is not taking pre-orders for full retail purchases, and Best Buy is gouging the price to $600 for those not on contract. I'm going to pre-order from Sprint when they start accepting in-store (some places actually already have).

I wonder what would be the price if I tell BB that I'm contract now but I want to renew (restart my 2yr contract). Would they just take $100 off the retail price? Guess I have to go in to BB sometime tomorrow to see how this all works. Maybe I'll try the shack as well.
Can they really inflate the price that high when retail (According to sprint) is suppose to be $450? I guess Sprint will have to take my money then and I'll have to wait 10-14 weeks for a rebate.

The $100 rebate is only for new contracts and people with their 22-month full upgrade. The 12-month (non-premier) upgrade is just $75 off retail.
And yes, Best Buy can gouge all they want to.
Under Contract with TMO
I'm under contract with T-Mobile but with still 5 months left. Going to terminate the contract (only $100). Rather cough up the money than continue to use my G1 for the next five months. I want the Evo NOW.
Same here. I'm upgrading from my hero (which I got in December ) so I think your better seeing the device in a sprint store then buying it full out.
im dropping my plan to the lowest ($20/mo.) on vzw and already preordered from radio shack

Adding another line is considered a new activation therefore you would get the phone for $199.
Where is everyone getting this 600$ quote from. At my BB the guy said he "thinks its like 600" which means that he was going off the rumoured off contract price.I don't see BB raising the price of a phone higher than it's MSRP.

Oh you don't? Go to Best Buy and try to buy a Hero or a Moment off contract and enjoy paying $600 or $630, respectively!

No. You are stuck paying the full price. I am a smart one though. I had a Sprint account back in the day, left with good standing. I ran into credit issues and about a year back had to pay a deposit so I just went on my father's plan with my fiancee instead. Well, I just got my Hero in October, 2 yr contract. Called up Sprint. They told me to get the Evo in my name, new account with a new phone number. Then afterward, get my dad and transfer my Hero line into my account. I get the 2 yr new activation price for the Evo, I keep my number and I don't have to pay the ETF. Life is f-ing sweet!

Yes but I don't pay for those lines. The owner's of the lines do. I will now be on my own plan, by myself with no ties to them. This isn't the solution for everyone but I figured maybe if someone is in the same situation it may help them.
Radio Shack would not let me upgrade, because I am not eligible until June 1st for upgrade. I just went over to Best Buy and signed right up.
Also, the rep at Radio Shack was not clear as to whether or not I would get the phone on Launch day or not. The Best Buy mobile manager told me for sure that I would get it then. I wanted to try Radio Shack first, simply because of the $20 of free accessories, but hey, you win some, you lose some.
then again, in the case of the Evo, I think we all win
It's like they timed this specifically for Palm Pre Premier owners... Friggin awesome.

If you go through sprint, you'll probably have to renew your 2 yr contract so that it starts up at June 4th, or whenever you get the EVO. You won't get the $150 upgrade discount, but you'll get the $100 mail-in-rebate though.
I believe this is what you'll go through because this is what I'm thinking will happen for me. I too bought the Hero in Nov. 09. But in the past when renewing a contract, Sprint has always just restarted my contracts when I wanted a new contract.
Do to the retail cost that BB and the shack might, I'm going to go through sprint, but not the sprint store. If you go through the sprint store, you'll have to pay the $36 activation fee. Most of the phones that you buy online through Sprint, don't charge an activation fee, so I'm thinking (hoping) this will be through for the EVO when they start selling them online.
I'm still on contract and pre-ordered with best buy, was quoted $199

The EVO will be $500 at RadioShack off contract.

Well 3 employees, including the manager, all confirmed it, so I'm pretty confident. I would make a scene if they refused to sell it to me after telling me to my face that they would, and since I've been with them for 8 years, so I think I would get my phone instantly.
At Radioshack you definitely can buy it outright. It is $499.99, but there is a trade in program, so you can bring in your old phone and put that trade in toward the purchase, making it cheaper than a Sprint corporate store.

craiglist = HA

If you buy an EVO 4g off craigslist for the price they are selling them for, you deserve it. I think it'd be cheaper to buy it on a new line for 199.99 and take the ETF.. LOL
all the ones around the atlanta area were for around $650... I think I can wait a week and get mine for $199.
However, I can't say it didn't cross my mind to bust out my check book.

There's more of a cost than just ETF, taxes, etc...
I got mine pretty cheap, cheaper than the $199 cost + ETF, so for me anyway I won at your logic..
Plus if you get one of the I/O phones, you get an extra $10 off your monthly cost (which they don't list it as a year or two year thing either...) because it's a dev phone.

people paying like 6bills heck even 7 are the dumb ones..
Someone here in Orange County was selling his boyfriend's for 350, he said he got it for a tech blog to review and just needed to get rid of it. Don't think they knew how much it really was worth. D;

$199 + ETF is not less than $199.
I myself am going a route that is not to be discussed on this forum... but I don't want to buy a phone for $450 + Taxes (around here it's roughly 10%), so in the end it'd have been close to $500. So instead of that, I paid less than $400 with a free month of service (including 4g, and the option to go the dev plan route later).
But yes, $600-700 is too much, but there's a decent amount of people out there with more money than time. Just like Wii, iPhone, etc.
I paid 500 for mine straight up, new in box. After having it a week I will say it was worth every penny! This is the device I have been waiting for all my life.
i'm excited for the phone, but you guys are like fiending for it... the device you've been waiting for all your life?
I got mine for $500. It is out for delivery right now. The anticipation is killing me!
None listed for my area but I can wait some people are flipping out to get it early

Same here. I'm not remotely eligible for upgrade yet, so I'd be paying $450 + tax for it anyway. $500 for the phone and getting in on the $10 off via the Google I/O dev deal is worth it!

Bestbuy Trade in Program

Not sure if many people know about this or not but Bestbuy has a trade in program you can use for your older phone to upgrade to new phones such as the Nexus S or Evo 3D. No I'm not talking about the Buy Back Program because that you have to pay for. I looked at the price that they would give me for my Shift and turns out I can get $145.00 for it so yeah My upgrade is on June 1st So I think I might get the Nexus S which will only cost me about $65 bucks. Just wanted to share my findings with all of you. Pretty sweet deal considering The Nexus S is pure Android or I might wait for the Evo 3D because I'm sure they will be announcing it here soon.

I'm pretty sure you have to pay for the TradeIn program when you purchase your phone from Best Buy to be eligible for it....could be wrong though.

Yep, wrong.
Trade-in's @ BB are free, but be prepared to take a pretty lowball offer if the phone is older than 6mo and not in mint condition. Also, all "cash" is given in Best Buy store credit or $ off your new phone through them.
Additionally, anyone who purchased a new phone prior to the last week in Feb is grandfathered into their Buyback program, no charge.
Just put your phone on craigs.bb offered me 20 for my hero trade in towards the shift.helll no! I sold a broken one for 35 lol

you're right i was thinking of the buyback program - http://goo.gl/wO0yz
I was also under the impression, you had to purchase your phone from BB to get them to offer any trade in value.
the no charge thing is not true. i purchased this phone in january and they were charging for it then. they did run a promotion for a week or two but when it was offered to me, it was $$ and not free.
do you have any links that say it will be free if purchased before end of Feb? That would be great.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2380337,00.asp (states that the program was extended for phones and tabs until 2/26/11)

Here's the updated BB BB FAQ link.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/null/null/pcmcat232000050000.c?id=pcmcat232000050000&h=488
The important takeaways are:
1) Going forward, 50% off buying into the BB plan if you combine w/ the Geek Squad Black Tie protection plan (it's $10/month, and blows Sprint's insurance away - I've used this for the past 3 years and love it. So, it's an extra $20 upfront to get into the BB program.)
2) For mobile phones only, they'll give you a % of the RETAIL, not purchase cost. So, for example, you bought the Shift in Jan/Feb w/ your upgrade for $149, and you want to return it in July for the 3D. Provided your phone is in good shape, you'll get around $250 or so off the new phone regardless of upgrade. And if you're eligible for upgrade and in the BB program, you'll get your new phone for free, plus an extra $40 or so in store credits to purchase a case or larger SD card, etc..
From their website:
"How does the Buy Back Program work for mobile phones?
For mobile phones, the Buy Back provides exceptional value when you want to get the latest and greatest. The Buy Back Program for post paid mobile phones is based on the full retail price of the phone, not the discounted price of the phone. Your phone is typically discounted in price when you renew or sign up for a new contract. If the retail (non-contract) price is $600, your buy back value would be based on that amount, even if you purchased the phone for a lower price if the phone price was subsidized by the carrier.
For example: you pay $199 for a mobile phone which normally retails for $600 and also purchase the Buy Back Program. If you decide to redeem your buy back within 6-12 months of purchase, you will receive a Best Buy Gift Card in the amount of $240 (40% of the original retail price) to put toward your next purchase. "
again - it was free from superbowl week to feb 26th.
it wasn't free before that date completely.
From pcmag link:
What's Best Buy's Buy Back? In January, the retailer launched a program by which customers could pay $69.99 at the time of purchase to enter in to the program, for laptops, netbooks or tablets.
The program allows you to:
* Redeem your Buy Back within 6 months from purchase effective date, and get up to 50 percent of your purchase price
* Redeem your Buy Back after 6 months to 12 months from purchase effective date, and get up to 40 percent
* Redeem your Buy Back after 12 months to 18 months from purchase effective date and get up to 30 percent
* Redeem your Buy Back after 18 months to 24 from purchase effective date and get up to 20 percent
* For TVs only, redeem your Buy Back within 48 months from purchase effective date and get up to 10 percent
Phones command a special deal: the program is based on the retail price of the phone. If a subsidized price of a phone is $199 with contract, but the phone costs $600 unsubsidized, then the Buy Back value is based on the value of the phone. It's unclear what Best Buy will charge at the register, however.
For now, though, that doesn't matter - the Best Buy Buy Back program is free for both tablets and phones until Feb. 26. TVs are not affected.

Eh...
Me thinks if you still have your receipt, you've got a fairly good shot of getting BB to honor it when/if you decide to get your next phone from them. I'd imagine they would like to keep a customer in this case. Worth a shot!
