- Light leak is really, really bad. Can see light through the side of the shell (near buttons).

Ha! So your G1 is superior? Atleast you can still return the phone! Btw take everyone off of your faves thing and it won't go off, and try ending it with an app manager. Speaker phone is just as low in any of the non rooted phones with out the audio mod. Same with the not being able to remove apps. The sliding gets a lot better. The messaging thing has been posted in the bugs thread. You can use handcent if it bothers you too much or if I recall there was a widget app that does the same thing but changes the icon, but I bet it has its quirks too.

- Can't remove some applications Get used to it. Even on vanilla Android you can't remove useless apps.
- No "Link All" contacts with Twitter/FB Mine linked most of mine automatically, and the ones that weren't automatic were easy and quick to do.
- No way to reprogram "MyFave" button to another program. I'm sure it will come with root.
Phone Recommendation: Avoid this phone. Go ahead and return it and keep your G1. I'll take the Slide over just about ANY Android phone out right now.

turboyo pretty much said the same thing, but I figured I would reiterate it for you. I'm tired of people *****ing on here about this phone and this or that or what not. You're one of those people that would buy any phone and immediately post on a forum every diminutive little issue you find. It's a brand new phone. It's bound to have bugs. If you can't deal with that, don't buy it, or wait 6 months to buy it.
I wonder if it would make most people feel better about the phone if they were forced to use an old Startac handset for a week.

at first it scared me and i almost thought i had a defective unit but either its better or i just got used to sliding it out.
All the issues and bugs that are being reported, I have not had any. So far the slide has been my best phone. No complains here.
If you drag out a new message shortcut out of the launcher and onto the home screen where your current message widget is it clears out the number. then discard the shortcut..

Don't read a complaint thread if you're tired of it.
Yes, I am unsatisfied with a light leak, the sliding, the software errors, the gps, the star maps. These are the perks of this phone. I didn't pay to be a beta tester. I expect my phone to look and function properly.
My G1 didn't get wild with star maps or gps. Wouldn't we progress forward after 2 years?

Man I had a g1 on launch day and used it up until I got this phone. I loved the g1 and I love this phone, My only complaint has to do with just relearning on a 4 row keyboard as opposed to a 5 row, and really my only prob is the tab key is where my thumb feels the a key should be so I keep having to backspace but I'll live.
I almost didn't order this phone thinking a "better" sliding qwerty phone was coming but as nothing solid was on the horizon I went ahead. Super happy with the purchase.

90% of what you're talking about here is topical, and more than likely jsut your phone impaticular. Do you go buy a brand new car and complain about the car as a whole just beacuse of a few scratches and dents and tell people to go buy anotehr car beacuse of it? No, you take it back and either have it fixed, or you get a replacement,

- Light leak above menu keys on the sides again, I see no signs of this, and I use the phone a lot, I even just took it out just now and looked at it from all angles, your phone really may be defective.
- Track pad isn't consistent. Mostly it's correct in direction swipe. Ill somewhat agree with this, my issue with it is that the track pad is a rectangle....but its facing the wrong direction when the keboard is slid out, which is 90% of the time when it would be in use. That was just bad engineering.
- GPS takes a while to locate but is usually very precise. In the City (Chicago) in the outer suburbs, and out in the boondocks 3 hrs away, it locates just as fast as my Garmin and my TomTom
- Keyboard has non-intuitive layout. Im not sure why they at least didn't shade down either the Letters or Numbers. They could have done without thw home key, he menu key, the tab key and made them slightly larger. But thats all really nitpicking, as Ive pretty much already gotten used to the keyboard.

I have never had a "perfect" car to drive, nor have I ever even seen or heard of one. I'm pretty sure if they made one it would be called a Rolls Royce and be expensive as hell. If I wanted to be critical I could go with the old "why is it not waterproof and babysit when I wanna go out and drink beer with the guys". Five years ago this phone was out of everyones ability to even manufacture. I hear complaints at work all day, but it an extremely rare occasion when someone offers a solution. My motto is "if you don't like it, fix it". Or at the very least, look for someone who has.

It's google's issue. Supposedly it's fixed now. Try it again. I never had a problem not finding all these apps on my Slide.

Yea, I came from a cliq too, and I too was amazed at the differance. Only thing it made me hate was Motorola though.
Ill use 2 tin cans (string optional) before I buy another moto phone.

Ah, there you go. I was forgetting the biggest one to hate. And yeah I guess I retract my previous statement. I can't hate Android for what Motorola effed up.
Just got my MT3G Slide yesterday; it is really a GREAT phone. Not sure what's going on with the poster's phone but mine has absolutely none of those issues. Kinda makes me wonder if he/she even has one. Buyer's remorse is there for a reason and I would not hesitate to return the Slide if i didn't think it was an absolute upgrade from the G1, MT3G, Cliq or CliqXT. I am a hardcore G1 root user and I was EXTREMELY skeptical of this phone; I am a skeptic no longer. I'm not even worried about root as I have no immediate need for an ad-hoc data tether nor any real desire for flashing experimental ROM's. Best phone I've ever owned, hands down.
I picked the slide up Monday and I love it so far.
I have noticed the light leaking through the bottom of the case, when I am in a dark room. But that doesn't bother me, I've seen this on other decives as well.
The speed of this phone is very impressive, even with all the crap that Tmobile put on it out of the box! But I would like to root this phone so I can get rid of the stuff I am not using. Just bothers me having it there.

Just picked up a Snap. (Euro model)
The top row keys (menu keys, home, back, etc..) make a funny sound when I click them. They feel very "wrong". It sounds like it makes a click before I actually push it all the way in. So there is a sorta plastic-y double-click sound.
I rushed back to the store and the guy opened another box to compare and that was making the same noise too. He suggested it's new and will break in with time. (The display model was good but it has been "broken in" by a lot of customers.)
(QWERTY part of keyboard is fine.)
I'm inclined to think BOTH phones had a problem and it makes me feel uncomfortable.
I had a similar experience with a laptop's touchpad button once and it got worse over time. So this is why I'm pessimistic.
Has anyone else had this problem/issue?

Well it's good to know.... but also sad news because apparently HTC screwed up something.
After using mine for 24 hours the problem was worsening so I just returned it to the store.
I don't know how old is yours (and if it's getting better or worse), maybe you can also return it?
I didn't get another one because frankly I was not awed by the Snap.
Coming from an Excalibur (S620) and based on specs I was expecting to be blown away by the performance of Snap.
But with 3VOLUTION's latest 6.5 ROM on my trusty (and beaten) Excalibur I could not see any improvement. (minus, of course, 3G and GPS)
Maybe I will buy another Snap in the future but going to wait until this hardware issue gets acknowledged/fixed.
PS. It is important to point out, the phone they had on display -abused by a lot of people- was PERFECT. Strange.
@an.ghezzi - please let me know the age of your phone and how this issue develops over time.

Just an update.
I picked up a second Snap a couple of weeks ago. Tried the keys in the store and they were not perfect but almost.
Lately I'm getting pissed off with them again. They are just as bad as the first one was. And I know this is a minor problem - probably not even a problem for most people - but I get so frustrated by it. This damn thing feels so cheap. Cheap crap plastic. My Excalibur is 3 years old but still rocking stronger.

Same with me. I have a T-Mobile Dash 3G and was wondering why this was happening. It's happening on my left softkey button and home button. I'm gonna take it back to T-Mobile on Tuesday.
Yeah I'm very pissed about this. This new phone (second one, after returning first) is just sitting in my drawer and I'm back on my Excalibur. Squeaky cheap plastic is my pet peeve.
Unfortunately I'm through the 14 days return so I'm stuck with it.
I have one of the first HTC Dash 3G's, got it from Customer service before they were even available for sale online or stores, I have no problems with the buttons what-so-ever, no clicking, just smooth presses. I wonder if there was a shoddy batch that went through to some areas.
Try some rubbing alcohol
On my Ozone, I've noticed a bit of trouble with a few of the keys on the top row feeling spongy. I used a alcohol wipe to kind of loosen up the keys which worked great. I also had noticed the battery cover recently started creaking, so I tore a business card in half and placed it over the battery, which tightened that right up.

Now i know why there are less stocks of snap in asia! i have the same soft key problem, even after one to one exchange! am really disappointed with htc on this, not sure how many others have this problem and if there is anything we can do to fix this? maybe even take it apart??? arghhh...

ookba's custom ROM made it a lot nicer but I just could not get used to the device. Yes the keyboard looks great but the overall design is odd (screen too small compared to the whole unit), it just did not feel balanced.
I have a bad feeling about the fate of the "standard" WinMo (non-touch) edition. The new professional devices are getting nicer. They need to get a new finger friendly OS and a proper capacitive touch screen - once they do that, non-touch will go extinct.
I guess it took me until now to see how Microsoft ignored mobile development for so long. What was killer technology in 2006 is just a mess by now.
I still love my Excalibur, I dare to say it was the best phone I ever had.
Here is how I imagine the perfect phone: Blackberry makes the hardware. Ookba joins Microsoft and they release WinMo 8, or so. XDA community builds GUI.
I really wonder how many people are facing this issue... sigh.
So far, it seems its happening all over the world. I have tested and changed 3units. The current one is a bit better ... at least the call button does not creaks as much. But I miss the e71 in terms of built quality. I was hoping there is some hack we can perform to fix this.

I bought my HTC Snap from Singapore. Experienced the same "weird" feeling, but only on the Call (Green) and End (Red) buttons.
Seems to be getting a tiny bit better after using it for a week (or maybe i've become accustomed haha)
Agree with you on the screen proportion thingy. I still love my old E61. Keyboard + Screen was spacious and lovely. Fast forward a few years and this is the best HTC could come up with?

Now that we've all had the phone for some time now, is this the phone you wanted? Does it live up to the hype?
I personally love this phone. I don't have any serious gripes about it. Mainly small things but they aren't a deal breaker at all. This phone feels great in hand and the keyboard feels natural. However, I never use the application shortcut buttons or the www. Button. Those feel like gimmicks to me. I would have loved a full 5 row keyboard but manufacturers seem clueless to that nowadays. The phone is still very fast and my hinge is still strong. Battery lasts me 18+ hours with heavy usage. Its great when you don't have to constantly worry about the battery level.
Can't wait for this bad boy to get rooted and over clocked!
From here on out I'm only buying phones with stock android.

I want you to post another vid of you demonstrating your strong hinge but this time give the phone a little jiggle now and again. I can do everything you did in that video but my hinge is far from rigid. Im on to you!
Weak hinge isnt bothering me though, although im certain this phone wouldn't survive a fall if the keyboard flops out on impact. I love the phone... keyboard could be better as you stated but im getting more used to it. The phone feels incomplete without wifi tether, but otherwise I love it.
Good screen size, good battery, good OS, good specs , good data speeds, good aesthetics.

No I will not. Why would I shake it? Why would I shake any phone? That would only damage my hinges and make them more prone to looseness. That video was a realistic demonstration for practical usage. I will not demonstrate anything unrealistic.

I love this phone coming from the HTC HD2 running android and a G1. The g2 is super fast, looks beautiful, perfect feel in my hand, my hinge is solid not loose at all. Can't complain so far best phone I've ever got my hands on.

This phone is great. It's actually my first "smartphone."
I don't have any problems. My first time using an onscreen keyboard, and it's a huge learning curve for me though. I rarely use the physical key board.
I don't have that hinge problem. From day 1 I've had a case and I still haven't taken my screen protector off yet lol. I received my phone Oct. 3.

I want to make a video for everyone about my phone, not sure what though.
And this phone is living up to the hype. The GMAIL integration makes my life a lot easier. Saving things to my SD card is simple.
I love the phone! It's a fantastic upgrade to my old G1. The only hardware option that I'd like is the notification LED off of the G1.
As far as software changes, I would only ask for 1 of two options.
option 1, phone comes with root accessibility.
option 2, phone comes with the ability to connect to IPSEC VPN, perform WIFI tether, and directly access my wpa_supplicant.conf file.
If I had either one of those things, it would be perfect
To me, these things are minor enough (and the root thing is (sort of) and will be solved). I love the phone.

Yo man just checked out your video about the hinges. My phone has a strong hing IMO. If I'm laying down my screen will slide down. But like you said in the video, I will have to NOT be touching the screen, because naturally, I would have my fingers holding it in place. When the screen is closed, I hold it upside down - No problem.
I'm coming from Verizon and I must say, the T-Mobile call quality is nothing compared to Verizon. One of your vids you mention how you can just take a few steps and your bars will change, go in and out of Edge or HSPA. That's not necessarily a G2 issue.

I have my third G2 coming the first of the week. So far both of the first two had loose hinge issues and terrible reception. In the same exact place I tested the signal strength with my Nexus One and Vibrant and the G2. The G2 was not even in the ball park. I do like the phone and believe it has tremendous potential. Other issues I have had include wall papers changing by them selves. Calls not ringing in and voice mail not registering. And the most irritating dropped calls. Just by picking up the device it would launch an application and deploying the keyboard will start up apps randomly. I did not touch the screen in any way when these things occur. Tried to launch Goggle Googles and a black screen came up and when I tried to back out it went to Google Earth. So far I am not overly impressed although as I stated previously that I do like the phone. If the thrid one has the same problems i will return it and wait to see what happens. I am hoping it will not as there is just something about this phone which appeals to me.

I am very happy with my phone. No problems with it whatsoever. It's everything I expected and more!
My hinge is somewhere in the middle between tight and loose. The screen will sometimes drop down if I hold the phone upside down without touching they keyboard. I have been using it heavily and have not had any problems with the hinge in normal use - keyboard open or closed - so it is a complete non-issue for me. I feel this is how it was designed to work.
The phone is blazing fast an the camera and video look great. No rebooting issues and reception is pretty good. I came from a Moto Cliq and the battery life and reception are both better on the G2.

I have some of those sticky antennas that go behind your battery on order. You can get a 5 pack of them on Amazon for $5 shipped. I noticed an improvement on my Cliq after installing one, so I'm willing to bet it will help. I don't have any reception problems, but it's always good to have more bars. You just have to make sure to stick it directly where the internal antenna is.
Anybody know exactly where the antenna is in this phone?

only issue is samoled is a samsung exclusive. regular amoled has too much glare. plus slcd is cheaper.
I had a couple reservations getting it, but I have to say I love this phone! I went from a G1 to Nexus One and now G2. This phone feels like a Nexus One but with a physical keyboard. I'm hanging onto my N1 as a companion/backup.
The G2 made me realize how much I missed having a physical keyboard....plus the radio and GPS on it seems to be superior to the N1....also being in a HSPA+ area is always a plus too.

Yeah that's definitely a problem with T-Mobile; I believe I mention that in the video. I can remember 2 years ago when I had a Sidekick I would get horrible signal while inside of buildings. I would be in class and have no signal. Now with the G2 I can walk literally 10 feet and my signal will fluctuate like crazy.
I'm sending mine back and sticking with my G1 for the following reasons:
1) In the upper right corner of market, it has a link to TMobile apps instead of my Downloads (I so hate them for that!)
2) I hate the hardware keyboard / hinge slider.
a) slider slides closed while holding and typing fast
b) impossible to type < or > with hardware keyboard (even with SYM key software popup).
c) Keys too wide and letters off-center.
d) No number row sucks, too much use of function key.
e) Although the touch pad is about the same as the rolly-ball, they both suck compared to 4 arrow keys on the keyboard.
f) I also prefer the 4 function keys as hard keys instead of softkeys.
3) Battery is worse then G1 in edge-case areas (2G/3G), but I do admit battery is better then G1 in solid 3G area.
4) Notification lights. I have not known about many missed calls/texts that I would have seen much earlier using my G1.
5) Although I love the proximity sensor in theory, I guess I don't hold my phone correctly for it because I have already hit keys while talking more than I have in 2 years with the G1.
6) microUSB port on left side instead of bottom makes it impossible to hold the phone while it is charging (I am left handed).
7) Buggy, I've had a few crashes, and the camera got stuck running or something once because barcode scanner claimed it was in use and even after I tried to kill everything the battery drained from 60% to 0% within like 15 min in my pocket. Also had apps like Google Earth and some root apps lockup.
8) External speaker sounds tinny as hell.
9) You can't swap the microSD card without removing the battery.
10) Too expensive... I'll wait until my contract is fully up in march so I get a better discount, but I'm hoping there is a better GSM phone my then. If the Epic 4G worked on TMobile (or if Sprint worked at my house), I would take that over the G2 in a second purely for the better hardware keyboard design.
After all is said and done and you get CM6 or some other custom rom on your phone, all Android phones are basically the same, other than design and speed. G1 is dog slow, but it can still do EVERYTHING the G2 can, as can any other rooted Android phone. (except play flash as well, G1 hacks for flash are still lacking)
I am completely happy with my G2. I haven't had any major issues whatsoever, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else currently on the market. There is also nothing in the near future that I've seen (MyTouch HD, WP7, etc.) that will make me regret buying the G2. My next phone will likely be the G3!

There seems to be so many complaints from people and them replacements for their G2. Are a lot of people plagued by these problems? Do you think you have a perfect G2? (No dead pixels, no loose hinge, no random reboots, good battery, etc). I'm curious to see how many people actually needed to get a replacement before they got a 'good' phone.
I have had my G2 for about five days now, and the only problem I have is with the hinge. At first, I just thought people were complaining that the hinge would not snap-close/was easy to open, but after playing with he phone almost non-stop for the past five days I've noticed that it has actually gotten worse. It seems almost floppy now, and I fear that after a few months with this particular phone I will eventually be able to make it appear to talk. I'm going to go to T-mobile sometime in the next week and get a replacement, bu I'm curious as to what the chances are that I'll get a new phone with the same problem.
Aside from the hinge problem, I am far more than happy with the phone, bloatware and all. I'm hopeful that we will eventually have root and I look forward to keeping this phone for at least a couple of years.
No hardware problems. Just software problems which is obviously happening to everyone. I'm fine with it. Best phone I've had. And I've had em all from iphone to blackberry to android.

No software problems here, and don't yet have a good sense of the battery, but this hinge is driving me nuts.

I have had my g 2 for 24 hours and love it. fast and smooth and no broken parts. I travel and I have had excellent signal. have only charge my battery 1 time in the last 24 hours. coming from blackberry this device beats it hands down

when sending or receiving picture messages, the phone resizes the picture to 12kb.. its ridiculous! i could send 1mb pictures with a goddamn Razr 4 years ago!.. anyone know how this can be fixed? also the voice recognition is useless.. the hardware keyboard is a bit flimsy, but i try to not use it much for that reason.. the battery doesn't last that long if you have "background sync" or whatever its called turned on. i turned all that crap off so now the battery actually lasts
I have had mine for about a week. Two things mildly annoy me: the speakerphone is tinny and when I place the phone screen up, my carefully customized mp3 ringtones sound weird. Two, the battery life seems to barely eke by to a day and this is without even getting on to the GPS and Bluetooth bandwagon. Just HSPA/EDGE surfing. Heck, I barely even use it to make calls. An extremely minor minor irritant is that when I tap on the app drawer (I am using LauncherPro) there seems to be a millisecond lag before the apps zoom out. I find that a bit clunky, but no serious complaints.
No big complaints about mine. I love it. Best phone ever.
Few small quirks/bugs I've noticed.
Trackpad moves itself when in bright sunlight or in a car and sun goes behind trees.
I've had one random reboot. But it was while streaming Pandora with headphones in my car with no A/C on a 95 degree day. Phone was quite hot and rebooted itself.
MMS slideshow sucks though an update should fix that.
Hinge, battery life, speed and data connection are all excellent in my opinion.
That's about it... I came from a Cliq and could not be happier.
After 24 hours the worst thing that I have had happen to me is the phone rattles a bit when it vibrates.
Otherwise so far it seems to be the best phone I've owned. I don't even know if I'll root it!
I messed up the news and weather app because I always get a force close now. I don't know where I went wrong.
I've replaced the clock app and it should be fine for now... using it with tasker if I had clock open and change orientation, id get the geniewidget error force close.
Don't like mms slideshow. Rare random reboot. I'm still happy with this phone though.

Well I will have had my phone for two weeks on Sunday (10/17/2010). I just sold my Nexus one on Ebay this week. So yes I like this baby a lot. Its faster than the N1, I love the design. I have had one random reboot, my hinges are fine. I think it's the nature of the design, not a defect. They're suppose to be loose. Plus in actual use when are you going to hold a five hundred dollar upside down. If I have one gripe it maybe the screen coming from the n1, I'll miss them black levels. But overall it's an nice upgrade. Love stock android.
ive had mine for a few days now. coming from an N1, then to a samsung vibrant, now to this.
absolutely love it, my only dislikes are not having a dedicated number row on the keypad, and charge port placement. but as far as the hinge goes, i can lay in bed with it upside down and still text. no issues there. i just cant wait until i can get a new rom on it to adjust the track pad illumination like i had with cyanogen on my N1
but no real "problems"
I've had my G2 for a week now, and I absolutely love it. It's the first smartphone I've ever bought new, so just getting to unbox it was a treat. I haven't found anything wrong with the phone at all. Only gripe is that the led light doesn't blink when there's a new message/call. A light around the track pad flashes instead, but it is almost impossible to see except in the dark. Otherwise I love everything about my G2.

Got mines on pre-order and i do have the upside down hinge situation but its far from a problem for me since I don't use my phone that way and don't know anyone who does. Phones is perfect through and through, awaiting root!
I have several problems with mine.
1) Autorotate is a FAIL, doesn't seem to work at all, so I just have it disabled.
2) Reception is even bigger FAIL. It can't get a signal in midtown NYC very well, while my junky Nokia 6030 has full signal almost everywhere. It can't even hold a WiFi signal in my house very well, while any other device does. (802.11g).
I had one replacement phone shipped to me by T-Mobile with a very defective hinge (When you opened it up, it would wobble like it wasn't seated properly) and I'm waiting on my second replacement (or 3rd phone) to arrive via UPS. Odds are I'm going to send them all back, this phone is a pretty big dissapointment for me.
Also I'm not a huge fan of the physical keyboard, I thought I'd use it a lot more than I do (which is almost never)
I regret being an "early adopter" for sure this time. It's been a huge waste of time, money, and trips to the UPS store for returning the phone (I pre-ordered the phone from T-Mobile)
1) Not a problem, just a personal thing: Wish keyboard had another row. Coming from Tilt2 I was used to 5 rows. This one seems to have too much going on.
2) I swithched to T-Mo for this phone. Don't know anyone else w/ T-Mo in my area. They advertise I am in a strong 3G area and very close to a HSDPA+ area. I only get Edge speeds. Even with a very strong full bar, it stays on edge. Using Speedtest.net I avg. 32kbs. Using my Tilt2 on AT&T I avg 1500kbs. Customer Service tried to convince me (in a very friendly voice) that I would be very happy with the much slower speeds. They are wrong.
Overall, I love the device, but will return it Monday. I may wait a few weeks to see if any radio updates become widespread that may help. Otherwise, I will have to go with a Sprint EPIC. I wish there were more quality QWERTY Android handsets on the market.
Mine actually works pretty well. I have the hinge issue, but thats it. Really I almost accept the hinge as being a non-spring loaded hinge, which makes it kinda cool that it doesn't need it.
If it did have something locking it into place, thats just something to break later on.
No software issue's here.
Hardware: No issues other than the crappy external speaker. My hinge is fairly tight and I have had the phone since Sept. 30th. I have to hold it by the screen and wiggle it quite a bit before the keyboard drops. Really not an issue.
Software: My phone gets in a state where it is on a black screen and will not respond to power button input. I have to remove the battery for the phone to respond to power button input. It has happened 3 time since the 30th, once on the first day with the phone being straight stock (no apps installed by me). It happens if the phone is left in sleep mode for a long time. If I am constantly using the phone as I am most of the time, I do not see this problem. I am half convinced that it is some of the embedded apps that run in the background all the time. IE: My Account, Photobucket, Finance and all that jazz. When I had my app killer set to thirty minutes I did not see the issue. Now that I have it kill apps when the screen turns off it doesn't kill the apps when left asleep for an extended period and the bug has reared its' ugly head twice since then.
Other than that I love this phone coming from the nexus one. Better data connectivity, better gps lock, way better screen, way better camera, ****tier audio recording quality.
Can't really complain.
I got mine on Oct 1. As far as I can tell, it's perfect. It rebooted once when I had been wandering around our building at work checking the coverage and running speed tests. I'd probably run the xtreme speedtest +30 times. Its been rock solid since and before.
I have no problems and no complaints.

I have been using a LG Optimus 7 phone from Telus for the past week, and since day one I felt that the back and the search button were a bit loose. There is basically a extra noise other than the clicking, kind of like a piece of plastic chipping, that comes out if I do not press the key right on the chrome-embedded symbol. The same is true of the search button, but to a lesser extent. Basically, the button presses were not "consistent".
I thought this was normal, until I visited the Telus store I bought it from. I tried the demo unit, and it felt normal, no extra clicky feeling. I asked the rep, and he brought a live unit from the back, and the same story, it was normal, and not like mine. So I am taking my handset back and replacing it with a new one tomorrow.
Anyone else experienced the same? If so, I recommend you do not compromise, and take it for replacement or "repair", as it can get annoying, given the sheer number of times the back button is used.
EDIT: I have replaced the unit, and the new one feels a lot better than the last one. I finally understand what some review sites were talking about, when they spoke of the very neat clicking of the tactile buttons.
However, I hate Telus, and their ****ty customer service. I was assured that the unit given to me was a new one. I was too concerened with checking the functionality of the keys, that I did not bother to look at the software. Basically, the handset given to me was a demo unit that was brought from the back to be shown to potential customers, or so I presume, since there was a live account already signed up on the phone, and obviously, I did not get the welcome screen upon first boot. Another anomaly I should have noticed in the store was the fact that the battery was already in the phone, and there was a lot of greasy fingerprints both on the screen, and on the back cover (inside and out). Now I am pissed, and taking the unit back for some "discussion" with the sales rep and the store manager. This was absolutely unacceptable. I bought the phone out of contract as well, so I will not be making compromises simply becuase of the amount that I paid for this phone.
PS: There were two tiny scratches on the back of the phone as well, as if the metal came was dragged on a table or something. Seriously, WTF TELUS!
EDIT 2: So, I exchanged this second handset as well. I really want to love this handset, but Telus and LG are making it extremely difficult. The store rep, obviously frustrated with my second product exchange, made it clear that "this is where we draw the line" on the exchanges. He brought FIVE brand new devices that had just arrived. I tried every single one, and EVERY SINGLE ONE made a different noise when clicking the buttons, some were loose and wobbly, others extremely quiet, but hard to press. Talk about consistency! I finally chose the most solid one that I found to be working well. Yet, after one day's use, the START BUTTON now is quite loose and wobbly. I think I will go back, or just hit up LG on possible solutions.
I wish there were tear-downs of this phone out there, so I could have possibly fixed it myself. I just don't want to be adventurous with the dis-assembly process.
Also, an issue that ALL the phones had was that the LED backlight has a problem at the bottom of the screen. To see this for yourself, put backlight brightness on low, and bring up white or grey screens. It is too obvious to miss...
I really wish this had gotten more attention, as it is a serious problem, so a slight BUMP!
Edit: I will never buy a product with physical front buttons again. Seriously, WTF?!!
And the vibration is also really weak. I was using a Samsung feature phone before, and my whole body would shake on the vibration, but now, I barely ever notice it, even if it is in my front jeans pockets.
Otherwise, I really like Windows Phone 7, wish the updates would flow sooner and faster and periodically to add features though.
And I like the phone. It is solidly built, and has a great feel to it when you hold it. The LCD is also very sharp and has nice contrast. If it wasn't for the buttons, and perhaps it had buttons similar to HTC Desire or something similar, then I would have loved this phone.
I have the same things on my LG. More on the back button than search. It is quite annoying and about the only thing that feels "cheap" on the phone. Seems lika really stupid design when everything else is so solid.
Haven't decided what to do yet. Hopefully the button will wear down a bit so it won't make the clicky noise when it connects to the bottom frame.
Now the bluetooth headset pairing not working is pissing me off waaaay more tho.

I got mine last week - I am little confused about this as well. It does give it cheap feeling. I got a question besides the buttons, regarding vibration - How do i set it to high - Cause I think I have it ON high but I cant even feel it. Seems really weak. IF I am doing something wrong in settings please let me know. Or let me know the settings you have used I will give that a try. I like windows OS but not extremely happy with LG product.
Now the plastic cover on the windows/start button is starting to wear off in one corner. Wont last long for sure.

same boat as you guys I got mine the very next day, BAM same thing button stopped working and your right telus was not helpful at all the call center agent's advice was "well maybe you dropped it." I went to the store and swapped it out this one works well we'll see for how long.

Speed for me is awesome, and I'm still at stock speed, not tried overclocking yet.
My hinge is fine, just the same as when I initially got the phone (about two and a half weeks ago).
Unless your phone is faulty, I think the only people who have a problem are some who want to use their phone while lying in bed and holding the phone right above them. I never use my phone like that.

I do use it like this, every night, and no problem at all. The design is not faulty. When you hold it like that above your face whilst in bed the way the hand and fingers hold the device the screen stays open and does not fall down at all.

I know what you mean. I did actually try and the way I would hold the phone in that position it won't open for me either. Seems there are a few who hold their phone differently when laying down though, and then perhaps gravity means it does open.

Not strictly true. My hinge is fine - had the phone 9 days now and it's still as tight as it started out. My only problem is that the top half of the phone is not tight against the bottom half when it's closed - causing a tapping when using the touchscreen. I'm ok when I have a gel case on it which keeps the two halves separate and cushioned. Only problem is that this case makes it difficult to type on the top row of keys. I have another hard case which is thinner, but does not eliminate the tapping problem. I'm waiting for another case to arrive from the US which is rubber - hopefully will cushion like the gel, but be thin like the hard case.
I opted not change the phone since I have been told others have the same problem, and I didn't want to risk getting a loose hinge AS WELL AS the tapping...
At the end of the day this phone is pretty effing awesome otherwise (aside from a few little software issues - which will be fixed by devs on XDA no doubt), and I'm sure I will solve this problem one way or another, whether it's with a particular case, or worst comes to worst, sticking some of sort of thin cushioning material to the bottom of the top half of the phone - any suggestions, please feel free to let me know!!
I do wish HTC had just gone with a normal slider though, and this phone would be perfect.
My DZ is exactly as setspeed described..
I would add that while holding the DZ without the case mentioned by setspeed, it feels a bit like holding two thin phones combined together rather than one phone.
its really not as bad as it sounds but i would have liked it if there was some sort of latch or something to hold the screen tight to the keyboard while the device is closed.
I have the phone for two weeks now.. for the first couple of days I put a rubber case on it (the black case that T-Mobile sell for the G2) but i removed it very quickly as i felt it gave the phone a very bulky feeling to it.. the case is not very thin and the DZ is not the lightest of phones.
Im on the lookout for a thinner case too.. it would be great if there was a clear one as-well..

I also thought of adding some cushioning material to the bottom of the screen, I'm on the lookout for that as-well..
other than that, my hinge holds the screen tight in place while the device is open.. the screen opening while the phone is upside down is really not an issue.
I haven't rooted my phone yet, i don't really feel the need to.. I compared it to the old desire i bought for my girlfriend.
I think that the new Sense UI is a bit heavier on the system and so there are some places i feel the old desire is faster.
for example, when dragging down the notification view from the top of the screen, the new Sense gives you a list of recent apps used. sometimes it needs to populate that list and so dragging down the notification view is not as fluent as on the old desire. its not an issue because once it populates the list, it runs smooth very smooth as-well.
I think there is also a bit of lag while scrolling through menus. the lag clears after first scroll and then it runs smoothly again.
I'm sure that there are some optimized roms out there that take care of those small issues.
I had a hard time deciding which phone to buy - the old desire or the Z..
I'm actually really happy with my decision..
