Manual update and ram/rom - myTouch 3G Slide General

2 quick questions. First off does anyone have the "check for software update button" under about phone it says in the manual it should be there but I sure don't see it. Second, what does everyone have for ram/rom I thought it was supposed to be 512 for both but mine is not even close to that.

Current, no such option is available. All updates to early devices have been rolled our using SD cards and pushed updates.

This is a snapshot of my device's memory properties. Over on the myTouch Champion boards, everyone is clamoring about "where is the memory?!".
What's hogging up all of the memory? I know that it sounds crazy, but could there be a file hiding in there, yet to be "turned on"?

How are you screen shotting with no root? adb? Using advanced task manager the lowest Ive seen is around 160 free and the highest I get is 330 when ending all (except sense). My firmware version is 2.1 update 1 is that the latest thing released for it? What are these mytouch champion boards?

After a master reset I checked and had a total ram of 2 hundred something so there must be some issue there

So he truth comes out,I knew this device had ****ty internal memory,I only have a few apps and some themes installed and I only have 50mb left,I'm suing tmo for false advertising and I'm going to the rep who hyped this phone up and kickin his ass.

You might want to reserve judgement until after the full release. I feel like there is a piece of this puzzle missing. TMo surely has its reasons.

I talked to a in store Rep at TMO and he said the phone in on a soft release, and the full release is on June 20th. For that I'm in wait and see mode.

Ive been told the full release is the 16th

i have to admit, 145 M for programs is a LOT less than I expected....granted, it's twice what the G1 had but still.....if only I could get rid of all that "my" crap, I'm sure there'd be a lot more of "my" memory available

Tmo is banking on the apps2sd that comes with froyo hence the 8gb card that comes with the phone so don't worry

I hear that,I just hope froyo comes sooner then later, my memory is super low and I honestly don't have many apps installed I think its just everything like bookmarks and cache filling up the storage.honestly if they knew the system was gonna leave such little memory to use they should have put the system on its own partition and made a 512mb partition just for the user.

2.5 OTA update for G1 mid january

http://droidheaven.com/2009/12/12/g1-and-mytouch-3g-to-get-2-5-update-in-january/
just when i thought my g1 was getting out dated and they where going to stop giving us updates.
Even though our Devs are hard at work to get 2.0 and 2.1 working, and for the most part they are very quick and reliable but dont have a working camera unless htc gives us camera drivers we are screwed. but i came across this today and i now have hope. i was going to buy a nexus next month but now that its confirmed that we are getting a 2.5 OTA update i see no need in upgrading just wait until Cyanogen Drizzy or JAC (where are you MLIGN???)get a hold of this one
sorry mods if you think this doesnt belong PLZ move
is this for real?
I don't want to sound like a sceptic, but this sounds scetchy.
let me get this straight....
their new $500 phone is only gonna have 2.1 but the 'outdated' G1 will get 2.5....
....not a hope in hell of them doing that
i will eat my hat if we have 2.5 on the G1 before january is out....
hopefully my hat will taste good...id love this to be true....but its unlikely
Well.......
According to Eugene373 they have the camera drivers, but will not release them just yet...
Only a matter of time!

If you have the new flavored hats, you might go back for seconds. I'm sure the G1's "2.5" will be 2.0 with flash if it even comes out.
Bit offtopic but isn't flash just an application, technically a browser addon?
It wouldn't need to be in a rom, just on the android market as "Flash" or included in an update to the browser application.
If you piece all the rumors and truly confirmed info from those that get the leaks, the G1 is getting an update sometime in January/February to 2.0/2.1/2.5... something with a 2 at the front. Wow! Such shocking news "confirmed" by an un-named "source" on a site that has also "confirmed" in the past we would be getting 2.0 then 2.1 and now 2.5.
I made a Post with the exact same topic so a mod please lock it/delete it.
The g1/mytouch is not getting android 2.5 it is getting 2.0/2.0.1
They got the mytouch version working but the damn unrooted g1 just doesn't have the space for it so we have to wait so they can slim it down.

I dont trust this one bit
2.5? What is that exactly?
Honestly, it's getting annoying to see specific releases of Android for specific phones (e.g., 2.0 for Droid, 2.1 for N1). It's almost like after 1.6, the releases started to become phone specific rather than generic.

And you won't be the first to hear of it either. I promise you, as hard as it is to believe, that HTC and TMO upper management are the first to know. Next up are leaks from devs for HTC to media. Then official confirmation from TMO to the media. Then, about a week after that, if not longer, reps are informed. Don't say otherwise, since some of us work in the business as well, likely for much longer, and have seen how this works.
Reps are always left in the dark until the very end. It is stupid, since reps deal with the public face to face and can make a selling point out of a bunch of the stuff that is kept in the dark, but it is the way it is.
2.5?!?! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHHA!!! You gotta love rumors. The update coming out in January, if any update at all, will more then likely be 2.0 with or without flash. If it's that easy for people to post rumors regarding android, why doesn't someone post something regarding android 17.1 (wedding cake). It's the merge of iPhone & Android!!!! ROTF!

Yeah, I work for a cell phone provider, and we get a launch email about a week before the phone launches. I usually know sooner because I am one of the testers for smart phones, but I don't even get all of them, and if I am not testing it I don't know anything until that email... plus, even as a tester, I only get about a 4 week heads up, which is about 2-3 months behind the management picking our phones.
Worst of all, when we do new promos/plans we get our launch info the day before and thus have about 18 hours to read and figure out the new promos, come up with a selling strategy and figure out what sort of customer it is right for.

2.1 Release Info

Found this link http://www.droid-life.com/2010/03/1...eed&utm_campaign=Feed:+DroidLife+(droid+life)
Is this just for the droid(I know the site is "droid life") or what, didn't look into it much just saw the news pop-up and thought Oooooo
Droid-life....i think its for droid. Just a guess.
"OEM: Motorola"..kinda upset the Droid is getting updated before us. I was hoping so see official 2.1 before any of the others..oh well, no biggy.
On an upside, it says Live Wallpaper..
Maybe official sense 2.1 will support live wallpapers. We can only see...
its like christmas, If you stop thinking about it so much it will be here in no time. And the 2.1 roms we have here in the forums are good to hold you over.
Thought it'd be droid, just curious, bah, and yea,im just waiting for all the roms that are going to be around once the official is out, going to leave for army in 3 weeks so I want something based off the official.Gonna need me something very stable, though I've wanted to try dc1 very badly just don't have access to a pc to backup my files

No. Your Nandroid backup is stored on your SD card. The wipe/factory reset only deletes internal memory. The backup will save everything -- even your apps and how you have your screens set up.
If you download something like Titanium Backup or Astro File Manager you can create backups of all your apps so you can then load them onto your 2.1 ROM.
Ah nice,I thought about that but what if I had to wipe the ext partition?(it would obviously clear it,right?,is it similar to formatting,I've done it before but formatted to make sure)just read around that you might have to do that to get a2sd working(the whole reason I found out about this).if not I shall try that later on.and I do have mybackup pro,and of course astro
And I realize I'm all over the place, that's just how my thought process works
Thanks for the info
Partitioning would be the only thing will erase the SD.

yeah...what the hell is sprint doing here? the hero is it's flagship android device and they treat it like ****.
Sprint has always done that. I've had the PPC6700 when it was its flagship phone, a month or so after it came out. They stopped updating it a week after I bought it.
Touch Diamond: same thing.
Now the Hero.
I'm not surprised. Their flagship phones last only as long as the time for the next 'new toy' to come out.

Im fairly sure after the announcement of N1 and the rumors of Supersonic (CITA) the hero is no longer a flagship. It took Sprint a long time before picking up Android and IMO I think the hero was released to see customer interest.

Let's not forget the joy Sprint caused 9 years ago with the Samsung i300... knowing fully well it was scheduled for release ~12 weeks before they rolled out 1xRTT data, they went ahead and had Samsung make it with support only for circuit-switched data, and simply planned to drop it 3-4 months later and replace it with the i330. Rumor has it that they actually placed both orders with Samsung on the same day. Their upper management's rationale was that selling a flagship PalmOS phone that could do 1xRTT before they launched 1xRTT would "confuse" consumers. So instead, they treated the 1xRTT launch date like a state secret, and tricked a few hundred thousand of us into spending an unholy amount of money buying a violently expensive phone that they knew was going to be obsolete less than 3 months later. This, at a time when it was just taken for granted that you were going to be living with that phone for a MINIMUM of two years, if not three, because it was so incredibly expensive (around $500-700 AFTER subsidy, from what I remember).
The only thing that saved Sprint from a class-action lawsuit by livid i300 owners was the fact that all the i330s ended up dying within 3-6 months (fatal firmware flaw that couldn't be fixed, because they decided to have them made with mask ROM instead of flash to save about 25c per phone in manufacturing costs), so almost all of us ended up eventually getting an i500 for the cost of Lockline's $50 deductible.

Yeah, i signed my first contract to get my hero last october. but i'll go on a ramen only diet for a month to save up the extra cash to buy it outright. i'll be pissed though if i again have to get a more expensive plan. I had the exact same services i do now, just the plan was old, and only cost HALF as much... *sigh* the things i do for my cool little toys....
I can't believe how much people complain about other devices getting 2.1 first. I mean is it really a surprise at all the Droid will get 2.1 first? It's stock android as in no sense UI and had 2.0 so most of the kernel work required for 2.1 was already there. As for being sprint's fault, WTF does the Droid Eris have the official update and I've been sleeping under a rock? Sprint will get the same update the Eris gets probably in the same time window.
Ok,so what will I lose in wiping my ext partition? Dc1 isn't booting up and yes I wiped factory and dalvik, but froze on n1 bootscreen about 5 minutes in.saw damage say if it's not booting wipe ext but im not trying to lose pics/files,don't really care about apps cause I have them on my sd card(the actual apks).

Idle observation:
What did Sprint do to itself? Verizon can push an 80+ MB file OTA, but Sprint can't manage more than 9 MB? It isn't a network limitation, or DCUpdater wouldn't be able to push updated ROMs, so what kind of insane throttling have they cursed themselves with?
In my opinion there just flat afraid something will go wrong with an ota update like that wasn't there a update to the instinct that bricked it if I'm not mistaken but nonetheless a companies gotta be willing to take chances if they wanna stay afloat especially in times like these

I read some where sprints OTA can only do minor updates like 9 or 10mb. The reason DCupdater and all that can do it, cuz its downloading it from a hosted website, and its not updating the phone. Its just downloading a file, and you have to manually flash it through recovery.

Sprint has a miniscule OTA update service. When I had the Instinct, an OTA actually DID brick my phone. Probably because it was 100mb or something. Sprint's OTA service can only handle maintenance releases, we need to get 2.1 OTW.
Some of the firmware releases for the Palm Pre have clocked in at over 100 megabytes and they have delivered as OTA updates on Sprint's network several times.
Why are we taking the word of a discredited supposed Sprint employee as gospel as far as this "9 megabyte limit" is concerned when actual evidence demonstrates that it isn't true?

Well, if I remember correctly (I had a Palm Pre for a short period of time before I switched to the Hero), much like Google does with the Nexus One, Palm was the one that actually handled the OTA updates. So again, used the Sprint network, but it was Palm's servers supplying the update. If they had any fear of "bricking" the Pre, I guess they were prepared to place the blame on Palm if necessary.

Already a software update for the MyTouch Slide

This morning when I woke up to look at the time on my myTouch Slide I had a pop up saying there was a software update available so of course I downloaded it. After the download and install the phone rebooted and I received another pop up that said "Install complete. Thank you for choosing T-Mobile" does anyone know what the software update was for? I haven't noticed anything different.
Did you have the beta firmware or do you have the production firmware?

The update was the full release that will be on the phones for sale. Officially it was to improve performance and just the final build. Because it was the official final build you should now see more apps available in the market that are made for 2.1 and above.
FULL FLASH in your browser! That was a nice surprise that nobody mentioned...
nothing else major comes to mind. They may have added some htc sense widgets but Im not sure if I just missed them the first few days I had the phone..

Wait a minute...you've got the MyTouch Slide ahead of release? And it has Flash?! Way to go TMo. I know a bunch of people are underwhelmed by this phone because it's not a Snapdragon, but TMo is targeting this phone for the mainstream. If it runs smooth, I may just snap it up. But I'm curious about "Project Emerald."
who needs a snapdragon
My coworker has a Nexus and we run a lot of comparisons between my slide and his (n1). (we both work for Tmo)
-faster downloads according to speedtest.net app on MyTouch Slide
-better screen touch sensitivity on MyTouch Slide
-led camera flashligh apps for MyTouch Slide (only on Nexus if you root)
I personally feel the keyboard is pointless because swype and the android keyboard work so well... I would rather have a thinner phone.. but its still work buying. After a week or so I love the phone.
Camera quality is great! Not every photo will be the best because it is still a phone... but I have taken some really great quality photos.
I do not even see the point in rooting this phone with all the available features.. Froyo (android 2.2) will be available for this phone sometime this year which will add wireless tethering and hot spots..

A rooted phone is always faster than its stock counter-part, a stock G1 is much faster than a stock one...Even if both are on diff firmware. For ex donut roms for it pretty much superior in every way. A rooted MTS will be even faster, esp when various optimizations are applied to the stock ROM. A iPhone is fast but a jailbroken one is just better. Plus a rooted phone will allow you to really make your phone yours.

I understand and have seen this hands on.. however.. how about all of the benchmark results with froyo and the new jit component.... they are blowing the doors off of previous roms, stock and modded i assume.. I havent read into this heavily so I hate to be missing something... but this was my point about why bother rooting when froyo should be achieving these peak speeds that were previously only achievable through rooting..
If a dev can beat froyos speeds, while providing full functionality and then some.. then sure I am game.. but perhaps android is finally reaching its full potential and maximizing its hardware.. and all of these developers can start spending their time on making better widgets! (one can dream)

-What do you think a provider will allow?
So root is very necessary every time when you buy a phone from a carrier... its their phone and.... root = your phone!

Blackberry and win mo phones ( HD 2) tether with t mobile and are not blocked... A very very low percentage of customers even understand what tethering is... So yes tmo would rather sell web connect... But no they do not currently block the phones they currently sell with tethering... Of course tech support will definitely not help you with it.

I was told by two employees (one was a manager) that the MyTouch Slide would be the first phone that allowed tethering. The phone I looked at had easytether installed on it so that is why I asked.
They may just be saying that because easytether was on the market. Most of the rep's I have talked to have been a little loose on details with me (LIKE THE PRICE!!!).
That won't get froyo 2.2 for a long time. May be even a year

And you would be incorrect. Expect it with tethering and wifi hotspot feature intact in the very near future.

I was thinking the same thing, but why would they open their stores at 8AM instead of 10AM for Froyo?

My coworker has a Nexus and we run a lot of comparisons between my slide and his (n1). (we both work for Tmo)
I do not even see the point in rooting this phone with all the available features.. Froyo (android 2.2) will be available for this phone sometime this year which will add wireless tethering and hot spots..

Bunch of **** teases thats all they are
"A modified version of the Faves Gallery"......oh joy, now everyone can 'enjoy' that stellar feature!
well, I have heard that it would have Froyo before launch date, that didn't happen. I heard it would be this week (with one day left is possible but not probable). I just saw in another post it would be next week (don't hold your breath). Some reports say by the end of the year. I am inclined to believe it will happen but we will not know when until we get it all of a sudden. Just my thoughts.

Froyo is the Android base, not necessarily the UI
"...no phone left behind"
My cliq just rolled over in its grave is gave tmo the finger.

"No phone left behind no matter how long we make the Cliq guys wait! Oh... and let's just brush the Behold under the carpet and hope nobody notices that one."
This is likely what the big June 19th event was all about.
They say that is a Father's Day special on tmonews.com. Free phone with a family plan or something. I hope its really a froyo update. Either way if we get root soon... we can update now. well, when its ported. and with sense ui, that will be no easy task. Of course, they could port the desire rom.
I wonder how they could roll out FroYo for us next week when the Nexus doesn't even have it's OTA yet?
Unless Google is purposely waiting to do the OTA on the Nexus at the same time as the MyTouch line? Trying to even the playing field a bit?

Google has to mod the 2.2 AOSP code just like everyone else does for their devices. All the OHA members are privy to the latest code equally.
The reason the nexus got an update so far ahead last time appears to be that other other companies didn't appear to care about updating the phones. Now that they have google pushing updates so quickly to their own phone, they are making other phones look lame by having to wait so long for updates.

Interesting theory. I guess there could be several theories behind it as well. I'll play devil's advocate here and say that maybe now, Google has decided not to update the Nexus as quickly either to allow the other devices to catch up, or because they simply don't care anymore (since they aren't selling it directly anymore).
Thoughts?
why would t-mobile open at 8am for an android update?.........
All I have to say is, froyo is going to rock on this slide.
as long as the bloatware they put in the slide will be gone... hate all the crap... >.< want root so i can get rid of the stupid programs that are useless!
Yeah apps2sd and tether will be nice for an unrooted phone. I think it is a little odd that the tmo stuff cannot be removed seeing as this phone is supposed to be "100% you" ...

Hahahha! Exactly what I was thinking... yeah, It should have been removable. I got about 20MB by using factory data reset. All it did was erase some wallpapers and other minor, useless crap. I cant wait until the devs root this baby. Ive got like 20mb left on internal storage. sucks...
I would bet we dont see froyo unitl late summer or fall. HTC has to update sense ui for froyo, plus then the wait on tmobile. I would guess that the MT3G will get a froyo ota before we do.
Oh God... I just had a SCARY thought! What if tmobile doesnt include A2SD on their version of 2.2?! They sure did screw us on the live wallpapers for 2.1 on the MTS. Maybe that was just because of the sense ui. I mean it does animate the weather as a live wallpaper, sort of...
