Htc evo vs the Iphone

Which one wins, and why?
Of course im talking about the new iphone. Ive always wondered what people think...

Take what you read with a grain of salt because everybody here is obviously biased towards the EVO. I've never actually used (just briefly played with) the iphone and can't give you an objective, unbiased comparison. I chose EVO because of two reasons: my ~20 yr old Sprint contract was grandfathered in and cant be beat and Apple's a creepy company. Compare Apple to a cult and all you'll be missing is poisoned apple sauce. I don't understand why the leader always wears the same black turtleneck and jeans when making a public appearance and why people applauded and praised him for introducing copy and paste 3 years after introduction of their device. I don't understand Apple or their die-hard unobjective followers, therefore I stay away.

I also am a long time Sprint customer and changing providers just doesn't make sense. My discounts are really
good. The only thing I like about the iPhone is the games my friends play on the network. Love the Ego!

I love my android phone, but if the iphone came to sprint I'd add a line to get one. I certainly favor my evo but I do have an ipod and I'd more use it to replace that. Gaming on the iphone seems better to me. I like that it is easy to root android phones and customize them. I don't like that apple is so controlling.
The screen on the iphone 4 is very nice and though seems small is much clearer than my evo. But there truly are benefits to both. The biggest disadvantage to the iphone is the network.

Also, as far as my answer to the question, i would def. Go with the evo 4g. My friend has an iphone, so i did play with it for somtime....there is nothing special about that phone at all. I mean yes, it can be compared to the evo on some level, but it just doest do it for me. I guess if i was with att, i would get it cuz its prolly the best phone in their selection..but even if it was avl on sprint i would choose the evo over it anyday. My statements cant really be classified as biased cuz ive used both of the phones extensively.

Yeah, love my Evo. Not sure what I'd be using now if, god forbid, it didn't exist. Just not an AT&T fan, but even if it dropped on Sprint I'd still go with another device.

I returned my iphone 4 on thursday and hopped into a new Evo later on that day. The reason I returned the iphone 4 was for a couple of reasons. First the reception issues was pissing me the hell off. What's the point in designing such a beautiful phone if you have to hid it in a case to get proper reception. Second I was having major battery issues with it. Reviewers were singing the praises of how much better the new one was comapared to the 3gs, well I was upgrading from a regular 3g and to me there was no difference in battery life. I'm pretty sure that was attributed to me getting one with a bad battery in it. Third reason my GF was continuously complaining of static issues when we talked on the phone that wasn't there when I had my old 3g. Last but not least I was just sick and tired of looking at the same thing. Apple really hasn't done much to spruce the look of their OS up at all. It looks relatively unchanged since the first iphone. I do admit it's easy to use compared to android, but android has is much more customizable compared to ios4. In the end the service is what kills the Iphone, ATT sucks major balls. I haven't gotten one dropped call yet with sprint and the data is much faster. When running speedtest app on iphone I would get average ping time of 1000 while on sprint it's usually at about 100. This alone proves that sprints networks are much more efficient and I can see that in real world scenarios such as web surfing and using google maps. On the iphone 4 there would be considerable lag when searching google maps, whereas on the Evo it's almost instantaneous search results. The only thing I miss about the Iphone is the app quality. IOS apps seems more polished and their games are awesome. I'm sure android will catch up eventually, but damn do I miss playing angry birds!! Sorry for the rant enjoy your day people!

I am going to be fair about this answer. I have previously owned the 3G and 3G. Being unbiased, the iPhone does have its good and bad qualities.
- Take for instance the on-screen keyboard. Hands down one of the best keyboards I have used.
- The email and messaging system with its copy-and-paste and magnification capabilities is something that I miss and wish I could somehow implement onto my EVO.
- The build of the iPhone (not the 4th generation, I am talking about the previous models) is top-notch. If the EVO had the aluminum body, like the HTC Legend does...it would be awesome. Sorry, but when one of your flagship devices is made out of plastic, you are going to have problems. Maybe if they hadn't rushed the production and didn't skimp out on using a material other then plastic...forums wouldn't be filled with people complaining about cracked power buttons and elevating screens due to lack of glue!
If the iPhone were to come to Sprint...I would not buy one.

I've always felt the closed nature of the iPhone was a problem... when it first came out I loved the iPhone but since then android and the hardware has come to surpass the ease of use and features. the only thing that needs to be worked on is the quality of apps. Apple maintains a higher quality standard of apps it appears but I would rather have the openness anyway...
So in hardware and software I feel the EVO is a better choice.. there is already a lot Android does that Apple is starting to get and android will soon be adding to its features, speed, and so on.

EVO. Simply because of the OS. Both are great phones tech-wise, but Android offers sooooo much more. However, I don't think there will ever be an "iPhone killer". In this class of phones, they were FIRST to hit it big. The iPhone has an insane cult following. I do think that Androids following is growing faster than the iPhones. We all know about the iPhone and what it can do. So many people are still discovering Android and its limits are still unknown. That being said, I will NEVER own an iPhone.

From a layperson's perspective, they could give two ****s about the closed nature of the Apple ecosystem. The economy of scale Apple relies on is largely dependent on people expecting things to 'just work'
That being said, I have worked with both environments and I feel that the fundamental choice is this:
If you want something that gives you options on how you use your product, the Android OS is the clear winner. You can modify screens and layouts, find programs that replace whatever tools Google (or HTC) shove down your throat, and the ability to add widgets sets it apart.
If you want something that conforms apps and the entire experience into one specific type of regimen, the iOS is your choice. This sounds bad the way I said it, but if you go from one program to another and aren't forced to learn how to use it because they are all built similarly, this cuts down dramatically on user error...especially when your target is a non-technical user.
The best compliment I can pay to Apple is that its taken this long for a phone to really and truly compare to the iPhone. Before Jobs' vertical market strong armed its way into the phone sector, we relied mostly on WAP, crappy JIT java VMs, and pathetic screens to be our gateway to the wireless world. Now, we are beginning to see real choice, and that is certainly a very good thing.

I'm also a recent iPhone-Evo switcher. Have been using smartphones since the Kyocera 6035 and was a first-day purchaser of all four iPhones. Returned the IP4 partially due to the reception issue, but also because of serious concerns with Apple's decision to go with an all-glass, non-gorilla back. Much too fragile for something you're going to carry around everywhere. I was also very tired of dealing with AT&T and all of their baggage. Sprint's prices and the Evo's truly unlimited data plan made the decision to switch to this device an easy one.
The thing that's great about the IOS platform is that everything just works, all the time. In 3+ years of using iPhones, I had a minimal number of freezes and even less app crashes. The UI is the most intuitive interface I've ever used -- mobile or desktop. As a new Android user, I had fears that the OS would be a step-backward toward the days of Windows Mobile clunkiness. After a week or so of using the EVO, I still have issues with the Android UI but, for the most part, have been very pleased with the decision to switch.
Now, had the IP4 not had build issues and if it was available on other carriers, would I still be using an Evo? That's a very, very tough call. I've invested a ton of money in IOS apps (thankfully, I still have an iPad, so it's not a total waste). The IP4 screen is just gorgeous. After having used both the IP4 and the Evo, I have no reservations in declaring that the camera on the IP4 just blows the Evo away in almost all light situations. When people say that the image quality of the IP4 is as good as a $300 point & shoot, they aren't kidding. And the video on the IP4 is as good or not better than the current generation Flip. Finally, the form factor of the IP4 is perfect, but I realize that is a very subjective opinion.
Things I'm loving about the Evo? The big screen, first and foremost. It's not as bright or clear as the IP4, and the color reproduction isn't as good, but having all of that extra real-estate is really a nice change. WiFi hotspot is a godsend (I'm paying Sprint the $30 as opposed to going with a custom rom for this because I tether all the time and blow through a ton of data a month and would feel guilty not doing so). Love having a better notification system (although I still thing WebOS does this the best right now) and availability of widgets. And finally, the ability to once again use a profile manager. Oh, how I've missed that since switching to the iPhone! It's absolutely maddening that Jobs & Co. won't give developers access to the APIs necessary to make a simple profile manager.

Everyone talks about the "openness" of Android, how easy it is to customize, how simple it is to root, etc. Now it's admittedly early in my Android education, but I find that rooting is much, much more complicated and time-consuming than jail-breaking, which is usually a one step, 10 second process. Look at the "SimpleRoot" threads on here -- they're 100+ freakin' pages. Doesn't seem to simple to me! This isn't a knock on Android, just something that I've found interesting about the switch.
Finally, I've got to say something about apps. Everyone compares the app stores on IOS and Android and how there are more total apps available on the Apple platform. So far, I haven't really had trouble finding apps to replace those I had been using regularly on the iPhone. And I was pleased to discover that many of my favorite IOS apps (e.g. 1Password, WunderRadio, etc.) are now available on Android. That being said, the polish, quality and feature-set of Android apps lag behind those for IOS 4 to a great extent. This is particularly true when you compare apps that are available for both platforms -- in just about every instance, features are missing from the Android version. However, I chalk this up to the fact that Android is still a much newer OS and some of these mutli-platform apps have only been available for Android for, in some cases, a week or so. I have no doubt that within the next 6 to 12 months, this gap will decrease significantly.

Nice part about customization is you don't need to root unless you want to:
Replace HTC Sense with Launcher Pro or ADW? Check.
Customize Widgets? Check.
Layout Screens with Icon Organization? Check.
Replace Music Program with Your Own Choice? Check.
Rooting is definitely for us geeks, but you can do a lot more with a shrink wrapped Android out the gate.
Other than that, I agree with your sentiments

Apple wins for all the apps. I previously owned a 3G and loved it besides the fact that I would drop calls every day. I'm pretty sure the new one is going to have drop call issues with the whole antenna issue.
If more developers can develop apps for Android or port over some good iPhone apps then it would be fair to make a comparison. iPhone OS is about 4 years old and Android is about 2 years old. Google is the Wal-Mart of the internet so I'm pretty sure when they buy out companies they'll incorporate cool features in the OS.

The thing about rooting: No it's not as quick and easy as jailbreaking the iPhone (for whatever reason, I don't know) but the SimpleRoot method really IS very simple. Trust me, I've done it myself. The reason people are having all the issues is because most of them don't follow the directions properly. I made the same mistake. Once I figured out what I did wrong, I restarted the process and it took me literally 10 minutes from beginning to end.
But even without rooting, Android can still do just about anything a jailbroken iPhone can do out of the box. Rooting gives you even more options.
The iPhone of course has its positives but personally, for my own tastes, Android just gives me much more for my money and I actually feel like the device is MINE, not Apple's or Google's or HTC's. I was playing with a friend's iPad last night and all I could think of the whole time was "This is nice. Everything is so smooth and beautiful looking... but I can't really do anything with it except look at things. All in all, it left me wanting an Android tablet more. It just offers so much more customization and a more interactive experience. And despite owning the first gen iPhone, I found myself so used to Android controls that I had a hard time accepting that there was no menu or back button so when I was looking for extra options (in Google Maps for instance) I had NO idea what to do or where to go. Android has a bit of a learning curve but once you know what you are doing, you always know how to access a feature.
Android is still young though and that polish and finesse that comes with iOS will get there eventually. In fact, Gingerbread is supposed to bring a more flashy and beautiful UI, especially with Google's acquisition of the lead man for WebOS.

Dueling Grandpas: Android G1 vs iPhone 2g (One users experience)

I have had a G1 from the day it came out. (I actually have TWO G1's due to a weird twist of fate.) I bought it mainly because I was annoyed that iPhones had no physical keyboard. I like Apple products as a rule (I'm typing this from my MacBook), but many of the limitations of the iPhone were dealbreakers (or so I thought). The lack of MMS, and the lack of a keyboard... not to mention the lack of multitasking, swappable memory or batteries were a turn off to me. In fact I've even been an iPhone hater for some time now, after briefly using a locked and un-jailbroken 2g. HOWEVER, recently I picked up a gently used iPhone 2g for $50 bucks, and for the past week have been using it as my main phone. Sadly, my loyalty to Android has been wavering as a result. This is a comparison of the old obsolete hardware that started it all.

Screens:
First off, the iPhone 2g screen is bigger and better. There's really no avoiding this. It's brighter than the G1 and more responsive. The whole unit feels sturdier due to the solid engineering. I remember when I got the G1 it felt this solid for about two days. Then came the annoying squeak and the inevitable loss of the micro-usb cover. The iPhone 2G's screen looks incredibly sharp when compared to the G1, even on the brightest and dimmest settings.
Operating System:
I love Android. It's so open. The market is full of stuff that Apple would never allow. That being said, both of these phones have been out for so long that developers have had ample time to try and make up for any shortcomings the OS's may have. My G1 is rooted and tricked out. I'm maxing out the processor speed but the OS still lags. Even on vanilla 1.6 it lags. The only time I ever recall my G1 being more snappy was when Cupcake came out. The iPhone 2g is much faster and more responsive than my G1. I thought this was due to multitasking, but my 2g is jailbroken and multitasking fine. I even got MMS working on it! A small victory for something that should have been included in the first place, but a victory none the less. If I had known changing the wallpaper, and MMS, and multitasking could be implemented so easily and definitively then I wouldn't have used those as deterrents. And now that jailbreaking is so prevalent and even legal you can hardly mention those things. Furthermore, all of these things are actually condoned by Apple on their current flagship, which means they're at least listening to the consumers. The fact that the iPhone 2g is OLDER and yet still runs smoother than Android is telling. The hardware is just better at running the OS. You could claim that iPhone has had more time to smooth out the kinks in the 2g, but after almost 2 years my G1 has kinks aplenty, and Google has all but abandoned the aging hardware. Fragmentation has caused carriers and hardware manufacturers to take eons to update individual devices or even leave some completely abandoned. Meanwhile the 2G got an updated a few weeks ago (trivial as it may be). I've gotten so used to the sluggish G1, that while i'm using my iPhone 2g I think to myself, "Damn, how could the 3GS and iPhone 4 be even faster!" Oh, and here's a telling example of the functionality of the OS's: I use the Android lock screen on my iPhone because it's far superior to the iOS lockscreen. Please tell my why on iPhone 2g the Android lock screen is smoother than on the G1! I also think the Palm Pre inspired fast app switching app ProSwitcher (when paired with Backgrounder) makes multitasking on the iPhone BETTER than multitasking on Android or even iOS4. Essentially I have my favorite features from Android and the WebOS cloned right on my iPhone. No other mobile OS out now has this type of genuine customization. This stuff doesn't feel like a hack or mod.
​Battery:
Overclocked or not, my G1 has always struggled with horrible battery life. In fact I've always had bad battery life on both of my G1's. I have so many G1 chargers its ridiculous. Three at home, one in the car and two at work! Why? because if I need to use GPS on my G1 I know my battery will dwindle to 30% in about an 45 minutes, especially on a sunny day when I need some backlighting. I've become a master of stretching the G1 battery to the limit, but mainly at my inconvenience. The iPhone 2g battery is better. Much better. It charges faster and lasts longer so I really don't NEED to have the swapability. Somewhere along the line we got so caught up on the convenience of having the ability to replace a dead battery, we forgot that batteries dying too quickly was actually the inconvenience. My iphone with HEAVY use can last 24 hours. My G1 with moderate use can last 14 if I'm lucky.
Text Input:
I'll give this one to the G1. The Gmail client and the texting on the G1 is fantastic, largely due to the physical keyboard. I had a texting speed contest with a girl at my job and I smoked her ass on my G1. That being said, the iPhone's virtual keyboard is WAY better than on Android. I was even typing on a Droid X the other day and was saddened that the keyboard was still less enjoyable than on the iPhone 2g. I do hate that the iPhone keyboard never seems to want to disappear once you enter a textbox, but other than that it's great. I have used every available Android keyboard from Swype to Swift, and while fast, they still feel less accurate and less responsive than the iPhone VK.
Games:
I use Nesoid (NES Emulator) on my G1, which essentially makes the gaming experience leaps and bounds beyond the iPhone. (iPhone roms/emulators suck because, well, you need buttons.) But I'll be damned if I don't love me some Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds! I think both platforms have a long way to go before people stop considering more robust mobile gaming like the PSP and Nintendo DS, but they're definitely on the right track. With the addition of Flash in Froyo, we may see Android pull far ahead in this category. Can't wait to find out.
​Web Browsing:
Speaking of Froyo, I hear web browsing is fantastic on it. But on the G1 browsing sucks. In fact it's gotten WORSE since the OS has been updated. I used to be able to have 3 browser tabs loading simultaneously and remain loaded after leaving the browser (pre cupcake). So I could open Facebook, Twitter, and Android Community all at once and play a game while they loaded. Awesome! NOW every time I load another tab it just sits there until I go to view it. And God forbid I leave the browser. Then I have to wait for the homescreen to render (which is getting ridiculous), and when I re-enter the browser all the pages automatically refresh, ugh. The iPhone 2g's browser is better in every way to the G1's. Faster, smoother, and easier tab manipulation. I'm eager to see if RIM or Android can actually surpass this functionality, as they claim.
Jailbreaking/Rooting:
On the G1 rooting has given me tethering, screenshot capabilities, overclocking, and more customization options. On the iPhone 2g I have gained even MORE customization options via themes and different settings options. Still, the lack of widgets is a huge hole in the OS. I have also gained MMS, multitasking, and the fantastic SBSettings which is kind of like Bar Control for Android but better. Not to mention access to Cydia and Installous for my app pirating needs. Even though the Android community is very active and innovative, the iPhone dev community is equally ambitious and have had more time to work on their hacks and mods. iOS is no longer the cripplingly locked place it used to be.
Wrap Up:
In short, both OS's have come far, but after using Android at length and switching to iOS for a few weeks I have come to realize that the iPhone 2g pretty much blows the G1 out of the water. I'm sure the iPhone 4 vs EVO battle is much more even, but when comparing the grandaddies that started it all, my eyes have been opened. I'm sure some may consider my descent into Apple territory an ill-informed decision resulting from peer pressure by the sheep-like masses blah blah blah. But i'm just a guy who loves phones and mobile technology who came to realize that there's plenty of room for mobile OS royalty in the tech world. If nothing else Android has become a type of Ralph Nader, forcing Apple to steal some of it's better ideas so as not to lose followers. I shudder to think where iOS would be today if it weren't for Android being right on it's heels. I feel that iOS is better for novices and modding power-users alike. The G1 today is barely usable, but the iPhone 2g is still relevant in my eyes. Android still has the benefit of offering more variety to the consumer, but this is often at the OS's detriment due to fragmentation. Still, if the iPhone had a nice keyboard I probably wouldn't be considering buying the HTC Vision/G1 Blaze this Fall. Yes, even after all that I'm looking forward to Froyo and Gingerbread and seeing where Android takes us.

I'm not going to defend myself. I was giving an honest opinion. I'm a loyal Android supporter but I can give credit where credit is due. I feel that the iPhone 2g has stood the test of time more than the G1. I'm not saying anything about the companies behind them... basing this purely on software and hardware TODAY as compared to when they came out.

Thanks for a great review and comparison. We can hate Apple all we want, but they definitely forced Google and phone makers to step up their game big time or go home.And we're finally all benefitting as I Swype this on my new Samsung Captivate!!
And in real money, $50 with no contract is hard to beat if money is tight and you want the most for a limited pot of money. Or your phone took a swim and you can't renew your contract yet. Or you're saving up to buy a Galaxy S. I could live with the 2G mentioned above for a few months if I had to-maybe with a case that disguised what it was.

And in real money, $50 with no contract is hard to beat if money is tight and you want the most for a limited pot of money. Or your phone took a swim and you can't renew your contract yet. Or you're saving up to buy a Galaxy S. I could live with the 2G mentioned above for a few months if I had to-maybe with a case that disguised what it was.

Thanks, yeah I'm holding out for the HTC Blaze/Vision myself. It's like the Galaxy but with a keyboard (Similar to the Epic in that sense but for T-Mobile). The G1 definitely made me appreciate a good keyboard. Sadly, I feel that 5 row boards are a dying breed in the mobile computing world.

The part that makes me giggle is this post in general. It's not a VALID comparison between 2 pieces of hardware.
It's a comparison based on personal preference. Therefore, whether you are an Android supporter or an Apple supporter, this argument is biased and therefore invalid.
What it all boils down to is this...
Apple has great products. (I do not use them at all...ever!)
However, they are proprietary.
It's very easy to make a single product line that kills in performance, battery life, etc. when you have been working on it FOR YEARS!!!

Nah, this was pretty much entirely based on opinion and I think that was fairly obvious. The aforementioned "choices" were referenced when I stated how much I prefer the physical keyboard of the G1 to the iphone's keyboard... also when I said I was holding out for the HTC Vision.
And lol @ a "personal preference" comparison being invalid. I think the fact that I actually USE the first (released) iOS device and the first Android device is the only criteria necessary to make an opinion valid. My opinion isn't based on anything other than the devices themselves.

Great write up to the original poster, very informative to people either side of the fence. I am a G1 user for (almost 5 years) with little experience about Apple, and your post has helped me understand what the other side is like.
However, I would have done a comparison using Opera Mini, the browser is a great addition to the G1 without which I would have dumped the phone long ago.

Hey guys. Just thought I would post about my experience at Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. 2 of my brothers and one of my brothers girlfriend all own the IPhone in various models and 2 of them have the newest IPhone 4. I pulled out my EVO to take some pictures of the nephews and nieces and they all started asking about my phone. "Can I see that?" "Is that the EVO?" They were amazed by my phone. I showed them all kinds of things on it and they were drooling and I could see the jealousy in their eyes. The IPhone 4 is nice, but in my personal opinion I would rather have a new Android phone any day. Anyway, that's my story and if you have one similar you could share it too. Thanks HTC and Sprint for such a beautiful and breathtaking phone that makes IPhone users drool at the site of it.

There are some Iphone users who are in the dark about android, and once they see what it offers are hooked. But I find most Iphone users are such for a reason, they just dont know how to use other OS's and dont care to learn, or devote any time to it, the Iphone is just so easy to use out of the Box that they are happy with it, and when you show them Android with widgets and different types of alterations with each manufacturer, along with Home screen replacements, they just have that glazed over look in their eye, and thats when you understand why they bought the Iphone. Oh Ya and to add insult to injury one of the new iPhone 4s had the antenna issues. Dude said it drops calls all the time, but usually when he holds it like you would hold a typical phone. He said he has to try and remember not to hold it that way. Felt kinda bad seemed like he felt the iPhone 4 was a let down.

A few of my co-workers had the new iphone, and after seeing my evo and it's brutal awesomeness, two of them actually switched to sprint a week later just to get one.

My evo takes ok pics the iphone kills it, My evo has a larger screen but for some reason the iphone seems clearer, iphone has better games, and video capture seems better.. but MAN THAT SPRINT coverage just kicks a$$. oh and the evo nav and free wifi tethering. not to mention the calendar kicks butt! oh and the music downloaders.. good stuff. All in all I think I need both to make a baby so I can have the ultimate phone!

I was working at new data center being built in North Carolina for Apple (I think the data center was code named "Dolphin"). I was on a smoke break, doing a video chat with Qik, and a few people came over to see what I was doing. They were amazed that I was video chatting with my wife 1000 miles away. A few of them had Blackberry's, some Symbian, and I think one with the Iphone (3?). I was there for 2 weeks, and by the time I left I know of 3 people who switched to Sprint and got Evo's.

The only reason why iphone pictures look better is because they have better resolution screen. If you put both pictures on a pc the evo pictures look way better. Evo rocks.

I agree with a_swellguy, there are pro's and con's to each, and I can definitely confirm iPhone pictures do look great, even in low light. Sometimes my Evo pics are very blurry and noisy in low light.
iPhone's battery life is also about twice what we get, and although multitasking is quite limited you don't have to spend as much effort worrying about maximizing battery life with task killers and such. It just kind of works.
The screen thing is kind of a wash, yes the iPhone is higher resolution, but I'd much rather have the extra screen size of the Evo than slightly smaller pixels, I think the Evo's resolution is already pretty dang high as it is and plenty for anything I do.
Sprints network slaughters AT&T any way you cut it however.

I work in the cellphone industry and VERY few people in this industry use any kind of GSM (AT&T or T-mo) service, why you ask? because they suck! I work in the middle of nowhere a lot those that use ATT I have the hardest time getting a hold of them because they are out of service when my Sprint works just fine.
VZW and Sprint have the best networks I have worked on, handsdown. They also have better roaming agreements with the regional carrier to get coverage in the middle of nowhere in the mountains.
I like my EVO and I am glad I am not tied to that POS ATT network (if they really want to call it that).

I met this incredibly hot girl at the bar last night. She wouldn't give me the time of day even though she saw me arrive in my Ferrari and I was wearing a $2000 suit.
Then I was talking on my EVO and she walked up and tugged on my sleeve. "Is that an EVO" she asked? "Why, yes it is", I responded. "AWESOME!", she said, "let's go back to my place..."
God I love this phone! ;-)

The Nexus Line

I'm probably inviting fire for creating a topic in a Nexus forum, but I assure you all that I'm not here to incite immature flame wars. I'm here to discuss Nexus, and more specifically, Android.
I've been reevaluating the value of the Nexus line (nevermind the impending onslaught of dual-core devices, etc. for a moment), but really evaluate what Google is doing here.
Is there anyone else that wishes they would just create a phone that is meant to be a direct challenge to the Apple iPhone? I understand the whole Android experience is built on a blank canvas, that it is your phone to customize and build the way you see fit. Granted, there are obviously perks to this. There are, however, plenty of downsides. I'm beginning to see the price of having a software company developing only the software, while a hardware manufacturer developing only the hardware. Even when the two collaborate (the Nexus line) there arises problems. I'm not going to list them, but if you care to see them, just peruse the board.
Imagine, if you will, a "Google Experience" phone that was meant for the average user. Perhaps a second "Google Experience" line so that the Nexus line can live on to keep developers happy. Imagine commissioning a manufacturer, like they would the Nexus line, to build a phone that *does* compete with the ever growing pace of mobile technology (yes, we can dive into a tangent about how fast the market changes, but anyone would agree, save for NFC, the Nexus S was dated the moment the specs were announced); I'm talking about something that is a little more future-proof than what we got. Imagine software wise, that Google changed the nature of Android to something more user-friendly. Where things were more uniformed that could cater more to the average user (how to cut and paste on an email would mean how you would cut and paste everywhere else); imagine Android being more stable (Gingerbread is chock full of glitches. many of them glaring - e.g. reboots during phone calls); yet all the while retaining the customizations and slew of options Android offers, which we love. In other words, imagine Apple iOS stability with Android's customization.
Can they do this? If they can, they surely haven't achieved it yet. If they don't want to (which I feel is Google's stance - many have said here that Google has no intention of directly competing with Apple; that the Nexus line, for example, is just meant for developers), then perhaps it's time for me to admit the Google Android experience isn't for me. Should they continue to just let other manufacturers hedge and manipulate Android to create a more user-friendly Android phone? Maybe. Maybe not. Of course, many here can't imagine a phone with skins or bloatware. But how bad is, say Touchwiz, when it can be so easily rooted and flashed to stock, or replaced by a launcher (yes, there are things deeper that this effects, but really by that much?)? How bad is bloatware, do they really do you that much harm? Is it really worth using the Nexus line for 2 updates from Google each year; of which, developers will undoubtedly make available to other phones (sometimes with more features than stock)? I don't know. Why doesn't Google reign in this fractionalization and start changing their ecosystem?
Unfortunately, Apple's environment isn't the solution either. Their "the-average-user-is-an-idiot" philosophy isn't exactly inviting as well, however, there's no denying that their platform is far more stable.
All I'm asking is, why can't Google achieve the same? Or worse, why won't they try? These are questions I don't have the answers to. I'm hoping to hear opinions and discussions. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty with Android I enjoy and admire, however, I am still critical of its shortcomings. We all should be. My criticisms stem from a desire to see it grow and be improved. Until then, the Android experience can and does sometimes feel second rate.

What's insane is, Google and Android have gain so much momentum, so much so that I think they could easily overthrow Apple. Yes, we can talk about how Android as an operating system has surpassed iOS in some ways, but to the average user and consumer, to the cultural impact, the word "iPhone" remains king and commands respect. Again, I'm no fan of Apple's philosophy, but there is no denying their success, and more specifically, there's no denying what they get right with their hardware (the touchscreen? Unmatched) and to a lesser extent, what they get right with their software.
Google can change this, not overnight, but they can. It's sad because it doesn't seem like they want to.

You're missing the idea behind the Nexus line. It's about having a device that's independent of anyone else (in this case the carriers).
The device is meant for people like CM and crew for then to be able to innovate. Think of it as a 20% device.
Google has all the money in the world to create a competing device to the iPhone, do they want to? Absolutely not. The two Nexus devices are an entry point for innovation and an attempt to change the landscape of the current retail paradigm.
I've said it before, the "Pure Android Experience" is barebones, but it's sorta meant to be. It's an invitation to contribution by others.

Wow. Very lengthy read. Its just a phone man (IMHO) . It seems as if you are in a constant struggled to justify your purchase of the nexus s. To me the Nexus is already better than the iPhone. Its a personal choice and that's really all that matters is what's good for you. Hardware might be an issue along with some software bugs but even the almighty apple has their own (the alarm clock thing and infamous antennagate).
The nexus, or really any phone you can think of is better than the iPhone. You just need to choose to and enjoy it.

You guys all bring up great points, and I get Google's intention. In many ways, it's fantastic that they are so developer friendly. So perhaps a different "pure Google" line, one that may be more catered to the average or end user? Would that be possible? I think so.
Why not create a line that could capture Apple's "average" user? Why settle for "20%"? And if they are meant to be innovators and to set the example and to shift the market paradigm, have they achieved this? It feels to me if anything, Apple's been making the "shifts." What Google has let loose has been criticized highly by everyone here (developer skins, hardware cutbacks ala the Vibrant line).
There just seems to be so much potential that is untapped - willfully untapped - for Google and Android. While it's admirable they are so privy to appease developers, there's no doubt they aren't worried about the iPhone and Verizon; there's no question that'll slowdown or even stop the growing Android market share. Is it time to change their business philosophy with Android, and if not, at least tweak it?

They have the average user phones. Look at the mytouch and the droids. They are big phones and they are very average user based. ASOP Google isn't something I would tell an "average" user to check out. Its rough around the edges UI wise, but that's something people like us want, a barebones experience. However, all the galaxy's, mytouches, droids and htcs fill that whole average space.

Very true. It's unfortunately we all know the downsides to going with those types of lines of phones.
I guess, it may come down to a fact I am reluctant to accept: the Nexus line may not be meant for me. I thought the whole idea of the Nexus line was to provide a pure Google experience that's unhampered by developer skins, that got the cleanest Android experience... but that hasn't been true [yet]. Gingerbread is still chock full of glitches, some easily comparable to other phones with developer skins which we shun so much. It just makes me reevaluate the worth of the Nexus line, and more generally speaking, the overall Android experience.

The Nexus line is not really geared towards the average user and will probably never sell as many phones as the likes of the Galaxy S line. Google knows this, I know this and I'm fine with it. I'm not an average user and the Nexus line is perfect for me. Both the N1 and N2 are far better phones (for me) than any iphone yet. I'm hooked on the Nexus line unless something major changes. Hell, just to not have "tmobile" or "verizon" plastered all over a beautifully designed phone is enough for me, well maybe not, but every little bit counts.

Are the glitches you speak of ones that you experience or that your reading about? Your setting yourself up to hate the nexus s if you are collecting all users bugs taking them all against your phone. I really enjoy my nexus and other than some forcecloses its been a streamline expirence. The phones' going to have problems. Its a brand new device. Your GOING to see more threads complaining about build quality compared to endorsing it. People like to complain when they aren't satisfied but keep to themselves when they are. My nexus was exchanged for a signal issue which has since never arised on my replacement, and the build is great. Force closes can mainly be pointed at the fact that your ahead of the curve on gingerbread and most apps were done with froyo in mind. I remember the same problems with new iOS versions and older apps. It happens. Personally, I think your ready for a skinned froyo device or maybe even Wp7?

That may be it. The "Google experience" is a pretty boring experience. Moto knows this, samsung knows this, anyone who touches pure android knows this. I remember the first time I loaded up an AOSP rom on my N1.
This looks to change with honeycomb though, seeing how enthusiastic matias is during the interview in engadget has given me hopes. He looks very happy to have free reign at google. It's almost a perfect position for a graphics designer to not have to answer to anyone but yourself since android is not a product to be sold but given away.

Look at HTC sense. IMHO apart from the friend stream it is awesome. Pity the Desire seemed laggy and I decided to ditch it for something better otherwise HTC sense blows away the user friendliness and boring-ness of iOS any day. If Nexus S isn't getting a second release like the N1 I am grabbing the Desire HD/Inspire (not a fan of touchwiz or motoblur)

I could never see switching to an iOS device after being with Android since the beginning. Also keep in mind that while Apple's lead on Google is small (they started maybe 6 months or so apart), that's a lot of time on the tech world. Granted, I feel like Google has stopped trying to play the catch up game and has moved on to doing their own thing, which I appreciate.

I've used iOS before and I find that the Apple ecosystem isn't particularly ideal either. Their philosophy of "the-average-user-is-basically-an-idiot" doesn't mesh well. However, that doesn't mean I can't respect the iPhone and iOS for what they get right. Not sure if I'll return to it per se, but now that I've used Android a bit more extensively, I am beginning to see the pluses and minuses of both platforms.
Haven't tried WP7 beyond playing with it in an ATT store. No real opinion about it, but I am not particular interested.
The point of my mini-editorial and of my criticisms of Android is to hope that it continues to improve. There is so much they get right, yet so much they can improve, and yet even more potential they can tap into which they seem to willfully not do. I think that's disappointing.

The new MT4G has the sense ui and the battery life was amazing. I come from the N1 so I know what bad battery life is;-)

My GF's MT4G was so horrible with battery life that we just ended up swapping it for a different phone. The bloatware and the unwillingness to want to root/rom the phone (shes not interested in that) was more than enough to drop it for her.

Fascinate vs. iPhone in Apple's territory: a funny story

Just thought I'd share this story with you guys to give you all a quick laugh :
When I walked into my local Apple Store (I was checking out their headphone selection (BOSE FTW)), a typical technologically ignorant boob of a woman stopped me and asked me if my Fascinate was some sort of new iPhone model, based on its similar looks. I simply responded: "Nope, it's better".
She was looking into an iPhone, and she continued to ask a pantheon of facepalming questions: "What's an Android?", "Does that have apps?", "Can I go on the internet?", etc. I proceeded to demonstrate how the Fascinate was better in just about every category. Well the look on her face after that point pretty much resembled that of a cross-eyed sloth, but she said that she was going to return home and "research" the pros and cons of the two phones.
I'd like to think that I did a good deed that day by prolonging (or preventing) an iPhone purchase and glorifying the Fascinate .
You're all welcome to share any of your own iTard encounter stories here as well!
EDIT: It seems I've been getting a lot of hate for thinking Bose is "ftw". Can someone make a suggestion of what else out there is better? (Not trying to be incompetent, just honestly curious)

Anytime you can turn someone away from the iPhone is a DEFINATE WIN.

Haha that made me laugh. Since we are sharing stories I'll share one of my own. I work in retail and a lady once walked up to the mobile phone booth, looked at a Captivate and said she wanted to purchase one. She kept reiterating saying how she was so glad to finally have it. After everything was wrapped up with the sell she left and went to a nearby AT&T store and told them she got an iPhone and needed to purchase a case for it (cause she didn't like ours). They told her that wasn't an iPhone and she stormed back to our mobile booth and very ignorantly said she didn't want that phone and wanted to replace it with the iPhone even though she used the Captivate and liked it. It's this ignorance of people that have no idea how smartphones work that makes me angry. Apple is good at collecting sheep and for a while that was almost me until I laid eyes on the Captivate that was love at first sight. Ended up getting a Fascinate.

Guys, we shouldn't get stuck in simple ideological gridlock. I believe the answer to most things is in the middle, rather than at the extremes. Now then, I love the open modifiable nature of Android. But to claim the Fascinate easily overpowers the iPhone is quite a narrow one sided view. Such a view is really propaganda.
Both my brother and coworker have the iPhone 4. Both are EE's who researched it and not simpletons. The battery life of the iPhone 4 blows the fascinate out of the water. While I get a max of 3 hours of display on time, they easily enjoy 8 hours. This is no small difference, I'm constantly short of battery at the end of the day with my fascinate.
I run launcher pro and get pretty smooth UI animations, however it does jitter and jerk here and there. When scrolling any list the processor is pegged at 100% usage. (Part of battery issue) Now then the iPhone 4 is silky smooth in every way, never pausing or jerking UI animations. It's excellent software design.
Every major game developer praises the iOS development environment. (C/C++) All significant 3D games launch on apple first... then maybe some come to Android later. Who wants a performance game running on a freeking Java virtual machine? OK, so Android can have native code too and ver 2.3 removes some JVM handicaps, but there are 0 games taking advantage of 2.3. Plus the fascinate is still on 2.1. Apple has tons of games that run awesome right now.
I like my Fascinate, but iPhone 4 can hold ground against it *very* easy.

Having had an older and much laggier iphone (3g no s), I can say that the iOS experience then, still is better than the time I have with my phone since i got a nexus one. I liked it better at first because it wasn't laggy, I was just happy with it being snappy. And then I went on the Android market.... SMGDH.... Does it have apps? Yeah... but they suck ass, hard... My gf hasn't downloaded ONE app on her fascinate since I got it for her, and what girl doesn't download apps on an iPhone?! Exactly, ... if there were anything worth downloading she probably would have by now... For me, it's kind of good that android doesn't pull my interest away from the computer and other aspects of my technological life, it is just my phone... I like android because it got me OFF the phone from being on it as much as I was on it when I had an iphone. Flashing roms is fun n all, but SSH'ing into my jailbroken iphone and theming it was wayyy easier, music player was better, and of course the games... i had asphalt 5 then (they have like fkin asphalt 7 now), in 2008/9 and it worked better than on this phone or my friends epic? #fail... I had quake 3 on the iphone and that did not work as well as my fascinate, but either the 3gs or the iphone4 will smash this phone at the 1st person shooters available, and that's what im into. So hopefully they make it with a bigger screen this year, and a little secret... Black people don't argue about which smartphone is the best, the ones that use them, know the iPhone is the best, we just can't afford AT&T's hella crazy plan, but we love to use Evos and Epics on Boost mobile and Fascinates on Cricket =/. I pay less than my homeboy who just got the i4 from the 3gs, (130 - 1 line / 115 - 2 lines) #Winning.

While convincing someone to look into android over ios puts a little money in a better place and technically gives them a better devise, I think its a bad idea. For starters an average person with no knowledge or any desire at all to learn any platform is going to have a hard time with both. either device in the hands of such a person will leave them cursing it.
Right now most people are utterly convinced they want and need a smart phone. For those that can't work the microwave (not an insult at all), neither device is right for them no matter how better android is. I have just recently convinced four people into their smart phone decisions, two of them I recommended iphone, and two android. While I have no doubt the two iphoners arnt going to be happy (as they seem to have a hard enough time with making calls on their feature phone). I prefer them being disappointed in apple.

I prefer to and need to use my phone as more than just a simple toy or entertainment device such as the iPhone. What makes Android a significantly more productive operating system? Three things:
1. Widgets: no need to open miscellaneous app to see when I have an appointment, my calendar is a screen away.
2. The notification bar: its just plain useful: emails, texts, alerts, all at the swipe of finger.
3. Download ANYTHING: I can download virtually any file on the internet and view/edit it as I require - unlike the simplistic PDF viewer and limited email downloading capabilities support of iOS.
Would I buy a 15 year old an Android? No, they most likely can't take advantage of its best features. Would I buy it for someone who needs information without the time consuming glitz and glamor of iOS? Absolutely.

That is funny. And I dislike the iPhony for a number of reasons. But, I believe there are a lot of sheeple out there that need the iPhony, and she sounds like one of them. Clueless about what the different options are that are available to her. No idea what she wants to even do with a smartphone. She needs someone to hold her hand and give her a nice quiet place to be in. The iPhony may offer that better then an Android.
Someone tries to take me by the hand and show me what to do, it is going to involve kicking, and fists swinging, so I want a more open system.

The main problem here is the fact that iOS and Android are, at this point at least, are about even for the consumers with "average" knowledge of computers that have more than likely grown up using them. Anyone above average that likes to tinker with their devices should quite obviously get an android phone, anyone that is below average that just wants a few apps and to make phone calls and doesn't really want much more than a feature phone with apps should likely get the iPhone. Lets face it android is more like a computer than the iPhone is and therefore, is more confusing for people at first and if the person that gets the android phone doesn't even really know how to properly work a computer will more than likely get confused with the android phone more than they would with the iphone

Ahhh, the simple minded views abound. It is possible to admit the assets of other devices without feeling dissapointed in yours. Most people realize this as they mature. People who should get an iPhone:
1) Anyone, techy or not, that is busy and has no time for tweaks and mods, but yet wants all basic smartphone functions to work immediately and perfectly.
2) Anyone wanting all the best 3D games
3) Anyone without constant access to charger. Battery life of most android phones is pretty bad. I don't want a 3000 mah battery mod for my phone, I want it to work out of the box with iPhone 4's 8 hour screen time.
Now then, its no surprise at all that apple sells a ton of these devices. Please stop being surprised or mad that apple is doing so well. Please acknowledge the areas that they accel, and instantiate yourselves as mature humans.

I kept a close eye on the android os when it was first released and I have always loved smart phones. My first was an imported Sony Ericson p800 (the full touch screen in early 2000's would blow people's mind haha). I absolutely loved my experience with the og droid and fell in love with android. However, with my experience with the fascinate, and the overall direction of most carriers to locking down these handsets more and more, I am starting to reconsider staying with android. Lets face it. These software manufacturers, barring HTC, and phone carriers, are all terrible at software and lack any kind of vision regarding user enjoyment. They are all about maximizing profits and "differentiation" Motorola almost went out of business because they suck at software. They have forgotten this and now insist on making their own adjustments to android that just make things harder to use. With the increasing difficulty of getting android back to stock, it is becoming less and less attractive. I believe phones like the droid is the pinnacle of the android experience, an experience that is becoming more and more rare. It seems the nexus phones won't see the light of day on verizon, who has the best network as well. If the iPhone does indeed have the rumored 4 inch screen, I would have to look at it seriously.

So you are a phone elitist talking down on a person that doesnt know about android,

Hey, I wasn't talking down to her. I'm a salesman, and I was simply demonstrating the features of the Fascinate.
And Bose in my opinion is pretty damn good compared to the equivalent in skullcandy or Sony.
Also, I never stated that it brightened my day. I stated that it was a funny experience that I'd like to share with you all.

The Fascinate and Android to me are better because of the iPhone, prior to 2006 all phones pretty much sucked. iPhone changed the game.
I feel that Apple Computers are better than Windows. I received an iPad 2 as a gift and I do not like the iOS 4. I prefer Android....

anyone that i hear around me that desire an iphone i have to ask them why they want it. what will they use it for. Then i show them my fascinate running cyanogen 6.2 and they are blown away. i tell them you cant do this on apple products. period. there is no customization. its either apples way or the highway. For people that like to customize and make the phone theirs in every way i recommend android, but for the douchebags that want an iphone because its an iphone...i say let them be sheep...apples digging its own grave by trying to sue samsung for something apple stole from them in the first place. yay apple...
