How to turn on 2G/ or turn off 3G but still use 2G - XPERIA X10 General

As title...
I read someone was using 2G instead of 3G to save the power. But I can't find the place on my x10 to turn off 3G and leave 2G on.
Any one can point it out?
Thanks

Settings -> Wireless Controls -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode
WCDMA only = 3G Only (My setting)
GSM only = 2G Only
GSM / WCDMA preferred = 3G preferred, 2G if a 3G connection can't be established

The way I do it is by going to my dialer and entering *#*#4636#*#* into it. After you enter that (don't push send) it will pop up with a menu. Select "Phone Information" and look for a dropdown labelled "Set preferred network type".
Mine has four options:
* WCDMA preferred (default)
* GSM only
* WCDMA only
* Unknown
I set it to GSM only to turn off 3g and use a 2g network.
Alternatively there are several apps in the market that claim to do this. The X10 seems to only give two options in its settings menu. 3g only or 3g preferred with a 2g fallback. At least that's how it is on my phone. Just those two options.

I only have two options.
WCDMA only.
GSM/WCDMA preferred.
Rogers, Canada.
Thanks rynoon, that works... now it shows G instead of 3G..

3 options here:
WCDMA only = 3G Only
GSM only = 2G Only
GSM / WCDMA preferred

There is a nice (free) Tool on the market:
"Show and Switch 2G/3G".
It brings you a shortcut to the dropdown menu.
Additionally I make use of: "Toggle Data Widget" to enable / disable data traffic easily by tapping it.

It's a bit disappointing that the best the market has to offer is effectively a shortcut to a menu screen.. I'm not an Android programmer, but how hard can it be to make a widget that allows you to toggle between 2g, 3g and no g (!! wireless data off!).. surely can't be that hard?

Doesn't work. All those software just show up the wireless setting. But the 2g/3g option doesn't show up in the regular X10 menu. Only rynoon's post works.
That may just apply rogers X10. Not sure other country.

belazor's method works fine in the UK... that's how I've been managing my data settings for the last couple of months.

its completely impossible because android doesnt allow this.

I must allow it.. because there is a menu option that allows you to manually do it.. what ever settings that is changing could be replicated in an app/ widget. Or is this only something that can be accessed at root level?

Thanks for the tip, I was looking for this.
Im going to test it to find out what is the impact to the battery.
im no expert but from trial and error i know this is the main reason for battery drain.

I'm just going by what i've read everywhere. I guess it must only be available as root.

It's true. 2G will conserve battery life a little more. Radio in general consumes a lot of power. When I was abroad, I didn't want to roam so I turned off the radio completely and my X10 lasted 3 days without a recharge.

I been having this problem that there's data connection only on a 3g network only. Forcing my phone to gsm only disables all data connection.is this just me or is this intended?

If you debrand the phone it wilk give you the option to use 2g only.

There is a free application in the market called Network. It will give you all the options we discussed.

Yep, I use Network on my Rogers-branded X10, as Rogers has locked out the option of "GSM Only" from the network settings menu (they had done this on my old iPAQ as well). The app simply gives you direct access to the *#*#4636#*#* menu. Works great.

Unknown taskbar icon?

Hi people
I want to know what the icon on the left side of the edge icon (in this picture) is. It's a little globe with a magnifying glass on it. I have taken the picture with my handy camera because if I connect the device to my PC or to wireless, that icon disappears (or gets replaced by wireless or activsync icon)
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/2148/img0198c.jpg
Here it is without any skin (normal icons. See the triangle thingy on the left side of the edge icon)
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/6163/img0202yz.jpg
PS. the icon may look different with a different "Taskbar Icon" set. I use djcedric's icon set.
PSS. All of my connections are disabled. 3G, Super3G and etc...
PSS. That icon shows up only when I'm in TouchFLO 3D (home screen and the other tabs.) As soon as I go to Start meny or other windows (not tabs on the TouchFLO 3D), the icon disappears and when I come back to TouchFLO 3D, after 1-3 seconds it appears again.
Is there any way to get rid of that icon?
Thanks for the respons in advance.
I can't say for sure, since you are using different icons, but I'll manage a guess:
That's the icon of "found new wireless networks" and that's why it disappears when you connect to wireless. If you click on it don't you go to the notification screen ("X unread sms" etc), but with a new line "X new Wifi"?
No it's not that. I know how that icon looks like. It's not that. It opens the notification page but nothing there. And there wouldn't be such an icon on the taskbar when the wireless is off.

Isn't it from some app you installed?

Ahh okays strange. I am using an Australian SIM in Taiwan, and I get that. When I use a local SIM, I don't. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Direct Push, Data Connection, Wi-Fi Router all off.
Edit: Second thoughts it could be Wi-Fi. Check out the Wi-Fi icon here (from Mobile-Review.com).

Maybe my device is roaming all the time without me knowing. I have turned everything off but that freaking thing is still there.

Seems kind of funny to change from a Tower-icon to a World-icon. I would swear it looks like Roaming..
.. meh
I have told you that it ain't WLAN. All of my connections are off. And don't you think that I would know if it was the WLAN, mate. "not found wirelss network"-icon is a tower sending signals with a cross on it. I belive it has something to do with "roaming" as well.

Comm Manager --> Phone --> Menu --> Network Selection
For Current Network, is it the right one?
Because you have Tele2 (Swedish company) and live in Norway..
Yeah.. I have been playing with those settings and they all are correct. I tried both Auto and manual. it's the same. I have got a theory though. My tele company uses another company's lines (antenna). because in norway there are 2 companies with their own lines (networks) and a lot of small companies give their services through lines of those 2 big companies. so, Maybe this has something to do with my roaming icon.

But it doesn't make any sense. Yeah Tele2 is originally a swedish provider but now they have their own system in Norway as well. It's kind of funny if that's the reason for the roaming indicator.

Some combinations of SIM card, mobile device and mobile operator seem to cause this error, but it's never been explained why! In most cases it arises when the operator doesn't actually use their own masts and infrastructure, but buys services from another operator. In UK we see this with the H3G netwrok when it is using Orange's GSM service.

Pure Edition XT1575 - No APN settings

Just bought a Pure Edition from Amazon, before I even installed my Sprint sim card. I have noticed that under cellular networks, APN is nowhere to be found.
I was not sure if my phone was defective or that was a normal thing. The phone is stock, I even did a factory reset to make sure.
If anyone can chime I that would be great!
Basically, trying to access the APN settings so I can add tethering on my phone. Unless there is another way without root.

Put a sim card via Sprint as well. Still can't access APN settings.
Again it's unlocked phone, not sure if that helps..
The APN settings are hidden, I presume, but have no clue where to start.
All I would like to do is to activate my native tethering. But non rooted, tho..
Thanks

Have you contacted your carrier to have them re-send the activation signal? That is needed on some carriers.

They did need the serial # and had to get a new sim card.
It took them like 1 he to completely activate the Moto X..

APN doesn't control bands. They need to activate it and send the configuration message. Just the way Sprint works. @MotoJunkie01 might have some insight here.
I might root and use SQL editor to access the APN settings under telephony..
But rooting will kill my battery, right

Why would rooting kill your battery? It should have no effect on battery life by itself.
Maybe we are looking at this the wrong way, what is the problem you are having that you think you need to access APN settings to correct?

I assume you have ruled out it being your current SIM card causing all your issues by trying a different one?
Also, if you are now rooted, there are ways to bypass the carrier hotspot provisioning check without messing with your APN. Although I could be wrong, this generally isn't an issue with the MXP.

Root itself has ZERO effect on battery life, what you do with that access might though.
There is no APN option to enable "free" hotspot, the best you can do is add a line to build.prop "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" which causes the phone to not verify if the carrier has tethering provisioned or not.
APN type dun will not do anything for you in a modern smartphone.
APN Type: dun - Indicates the current APN configuration may be used for Dial-Up Networking connections. This refers to an outdated method for using your phone to emulate a dial-up modem and is not the way that modern smartphones do tethering anymore. There should be no need to use this value.

Hello everyone, I'm new to posting on this forum (even though I have lurked for quite awhile). I've been having all sorts of trouble finding the proper Boost Mobile APN settings and I have finally figured it out and it works flawlessly on a few roms that I have tried. Hopefully these will help anyone having trouble finding Sprint roms that work on Boost Mobile networks. This will be especially helpful for anyone running a custom rom that doesn't support the "Update PRL" stock setting.
First step is to go into settings and find your Access Point Names section. Finding this section can be different for certain roms but is usually under Connections or Mobile Data. Of course, the easiest way I've found is to simple use the settings search bar for "Access Point Names."
Once you're at the Access Point Names settings, click the "Add" button on the top right corner. Edit your blank APN to make it exactly like this:
After you have copied my APN settings, click the menu button on the top right corner and hit "Save." Make sure you have checked the circle/box next to your newly created APN setting. After a second or two, you should notice that your mobile data is fully functional. So you'll see either 4G or LTE logo (depending how your rom displays it).
"But what if I only see 3G? - If that is the case you need to go back to settings and search for "Network mode" and it'll take you to this menu. Make sure your preferred network mode is listed as "LTE/CDMA." After you change it, it will ask you to reboot the device. Once your device is restarted, you should now have working 4G/LTE! Even if your 4G/LTE is working after saving the new APN settings, I would still recommend changing the preferred network mode to "LTE/CDMA."
Hope this helps someone out there
I have also tried these same settings on my Galaxy S5 (SM-G900P). Although I cannot guarantee, I am sure these settings should work on any phone on the Boost Mobile network. I am currently using [ROM] [ULTIMATE Note 7 Hybrid] [N930PVPU1APGC] [Stock] [v1.0] by tx_dbs_tx on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910P)
Not working for me
I have an SM-N910P that is successfully activated on Boost Mobile. However, only with 3G internet. I tried your method, to no avail. any other suggestions?

Hello everyone, I'm new to posting on this forum (even though I have lurked for quite awhile). I've been having all sorts of trouble finding the proper Boost Mobile APN settings and I have finally figured it out and it works flawlessly on a few roms that I have tried. Hopefully these will help anyone having trouble finding Sprint roms that work on Boost Mobile networks. This will be especially helpful for anyone running a custom rom that doesn't support the "Update PRL" stock setting.

Hello I am having this exact same problem. The pictures above aren't loading. Does anyone have these settings?

LTE Carrier Aggregation combinations for Google Pixel2 & 2XL

I have put together a spreadsheet what shows exactly which LTE Carrier Aggregation combinations the Pixel 2 and XL support.
Information comes from the modem config files(present in both phones vendor image).
I have made this a bit more readable than in those config files.
Based on system image 8.0.0(OPD1.170816.018, Nov 2017). Double checked the 8.1 preview taimen-opp5.170921.005 also, identical CA-s. Will update the tables when changes in upcoming builds.
What is LTE Carrier Aggregation
All the LTE Carrier Aggregation combinations in the LTE standard
Find out your MCC and MNC
Find your MNC from the Lists sheet and see which area it belongs(vzw_ca, att_ca, tmo_ca, usc_ca, sprint_ca etc)
If you don't find your MNC then you will get CA combinations from ""outcast". You will not get any 3 CA combinations, even if your network operator has enabled them on towers.

Google Pixel2 & XL LTE Carrier aggregation combinations spreadsheet
I see Rjio mentored there but I never see lte+ in my status bar. Also in sim status I don't see lte_ca why?
This is why its a shame that google remove diag function from the usb init.
If we can plug this phone to QXDM, we can try to mod the CA config
I see many tutorials activating CA and other LTE bands but m waiting for someone much experienced and senior to give us some guidance about activating LTE ca . Hope I could use my pixel 2 XL on reliance Jio with LTE + and not be jealous of OnePlus 5 users who already have LTE+ enabled.
And did anyone got it working ? Any Jio users?

I tried on pixel 2 XL but it's diagnostic mode can't be activated. Or I couldn't find a way to activate. Google don't want us to access diagnostic mode. I contacted Google support and registered it as a trouble and also send a feedback regarding this , hope they listen n activate carrier aggregation in next update.

You can see CA status in Network Signal Guru

You wont be able to activate it, yes. Because the usb.rc file doesnt have the diag value listed anywhere.
I think somehow we need to push google to put it there, although i doubt they will listen
Other solution is using custom ROM

Does Network Signal Guru need the phone to be rooted? Cause I am not rooting my phone, so tell me some other way to see it which does not involve rooting.

Well, the crazy part is that if you Go to Settings > Status > SIM Status and if you are using LTE CA it shows LTE_CA, but in Pixel it always shows LTE. But as my device is not rooted and I don't have that app, I also have no idea if I would be using LTE CA, would it still be showing just LTE (like there is no LTE+ in pixel) or it would show up LTE_CA or something like that. But as you do, maybe you can answer that.
Honestly, I just have no need to root my device.
Also I tried doing *#*#4636#*#* -> it shows Voice -> LTE, Data -> LTE, No sign of LTE_CA or LTE+ or LTE-A or any such thing.

In other phone, it will show LTE_CA in Data value. But again, not in this phone, LoL
it seems like that google dont want you to think too much about whether its aggregated or not, as long as the speed is still good enough. This will do fine for most user, but will frustate power user indeed.
Regarding network signal guru, it will show you the CA status and the multiplier, 2XCA or 3XCA (see my screenshot above)

OK, so, just to be clear in your phone even when the Network Signal Guru is showing CA to you, you still see just LTE in the SIM Status section and *#*#4636#*#*, correct?

I really don't know why Google did this dumb thing. This is just stupid. First of all, a normal user will never dig to the SIM Status section, and secondly, if someone is going there that means he wants to have some clarified info.
