Stop Complaining about the EVO's pricing - EVO 4G General

I am extremely excited for friday to come around so I can get the EVO, that being said I have been on here alot today, and have watched alot of youtube videos.
But all of the people on here complaining about the $10 extra charge being a "deal breaker for them" is hands down the most stupid thing I have ever heard.
People the $10 extra charge is for 4G/Unlimited 3G.
This phone is like the iPhone and allows you to use ALOT of data. I don't understand how people see a phone with a 4.3 inch screen, 1ghz processor, 4G, and a list of other features and will willingly pay $200 for it, but then $10 extra month is unquestionable.
Look at what you are getting from Sprint. Sprint is IMO the best company, their prices are dirt cheap, and they truly give you everything you want.
Look at the pricing for the EVO
EVO
$79.99 per month
You get
unlimited mobile to mobile
unlimited texting
unlimited data
free calls after 7 P.M.
free turn by turn navigation from sprint
450 minutes
For $79.99
Now
the iPhone on AT&T is still $10 more expensive every month, and now Verizon and AT&T are making people get a data plan on certain phones that are not considered "smart phones"

I have a problem with paying an extra $10 per month. I already pay them $160 per month (about) for my family "unlimited" plan. 4G isn't even in my state! I planned on buying the phone out of contract... they are not subsidizing my phone in any way.
You can say "well you should be thankful it's not xxxx amount because that's what yyyyyy carrier charges you". Yeah well I'm not with yyyyyy carrier I'm with Sprint. If Sprint is going to nickel and dime me up to yyyyy's price I'll just switch because it pisses me off (been with sprint about 9 years).
If I keep my Touch Pro 2 I don't have to pay this surcharge.... if I buy this new phone that they want people to buy it will cost me an extra $120 per year for the same service i'm already getting. Most I've burned through is about 10 GB's per month under my current "unlimited" plan and never been charged extra.
Make sense to you? Not to me.

$10 more for AT&T??
Way more...
- First off, the iPhone 3GS is $299 with 2 year contract (you CANNOT get upgrade pricing after 12 months like we do on Sprint.)
- Secondly, when comparing nearly identical offerings on Sprint vs AT&T, I just got $185/mo, NOT including taxes.
That's more than double. Just select iPhone and basically all the highest options (other than highest voice,) and that's what you already get on Sprint.

buh-bye. Good luck paying $180 on any other carrier, for what we get for $80.

I did not say one word about either the Iphone or AT&T.
My point is this.... I can keep my current phone (hd 2 nice but I'm sick of winmo) and not pay the $10/month surcharge. So when I buy a new phone out of contract I am paying Sprint an extra 120/year FOR NOTHING. THEY ARE DOING NOTHING MORE FOR ME NEXT MONTH THEN THEY ARE DOING FOR ME TODAY YET I AM PAYING THEM MORE.
Don't get me wrong... phone is awesome and I want it, but this 10/month thing pisses me off. It's the principal of it not the amount.

you can't be biased when you compare is.
The 3GS 16gb model is $199, the Evo only comes with 8gb
450 minutes are $39.99
Unlimited texting is $20.00
Data is $30
that is a total of $90, what other charges were you adding on lol, I see your point tho sprint is cheaper

And you and many others don't see it.
You are wrong!!
List me all of the features you have on your plan, (how many lines, what phones, and what plans you have)
And I guarentee it will be cheaper on Sprint. Than on AT&T and verizon or tmobile.
You will consider leaving sprint after 9 years and paying an ETF, but actually figuring out the costs and features you get on sprint v. the other carriers is unquestionable, correct?
Please list your features, untill you do that and show everyone how the other carriers are cheaper, you don't have a fair point.

The only way to compare is to have unlimited ANY MOBILE calling... AT&T doesn't have this option, so you'd have to put on unlimited calling.
You also need to add corporate messaging/etc, because Sprint has all that included. Yes, not everyone needs that, but for those who do, it adds up.
Also, you must add unlimited route navigation.
I think you get the idea. It's hard to do a pure apples-to-apples comparison, but even when you get close, it's drastically more expensive on AT&T.

Ya, i didn't put that in ur right tho about those other charges, good call

$10 a month. Putting that into perspective, that's one time out in a Thai restaurant. IMHO I can live without thai food for a day and just put those $10 toward Evo which I will use EVERY DAY of the month... can't complain here

Geez... again I don't think you see my point. Let me try to rephrase a little bit.
If this $10 surcharge was across every single data-plan regardless of phone I would not be complaining, I would take my lumps and deal with it.
This $10 is for owners of the HTC Evo 4g only. That is my problem.
Example:
So if you lived in my area where there's no 4g, and had an EVO 4g your bill would be $10 more than mine with a Touch Pro 2 even though we're both on the same Simply Everything Plan using the same EVDO/3g network. (pretend I only have one line)

It all boils down to you're gonna pay for it because....you WILL pay for it. Sprint knows it's still a better deal. Is it fair? Maybe not -- but you're still buying the phone...

Hey Tadda why don't you go to your facebook page and cry. Don't buy the F****N phone and stay the **LL off this board.

!
the 10$ extra isnt for 4G..
Sprint looks at it like this, You just bought a bad ass phone, and your gonna wanna see what it can do. so your gonna start using WAY MORE DATA now.. 10$ for unlimited data.. or 30 from AT&T .. your choice..
And if you wanna see the price difference go to att.com and look at the prices. Stop arguing like a bunch of girls.

Are we still on this $10.00 a month?
Let's see AT&T so far has removed for new users the unlimited plan. Charges $15 for 200MB or $25 for 2GB. It's like they are pushing for people to find their local Starbucks to do their surfing.
$69.99 - Unlimited everything mobile to mobile + 450 mins anywhere. No roaming.
$10.00 for 4G phone which in return gives 5GB(cap) that has not been really enforced when you go over a few GB's or 4GB Unlimited. Can't have a WiMax Hotspot and CAP the speeds.
Free Telenav Sprint NAV turn by turn usually a $10.00 a month feature on AT&T.
So for $79.99 you get all of that and then some.
AT&T for the most part charges:
$69.99 unlimited talk
$20.00 unlimited text
$30.00 Unlimited capped data at 5GB not $25.00 for 2GB
$10.00 for TeleNav
So for $129.99 a month you get AT&T.
If you want to get apples to apples then we can go to the Simply Everything plan which is $99.99 and it gives you unlimited everything + $10.00 4G and you have $109.00 with Unlimited Calls to Mobile and Landlines.
With Verizon you have:
$69.99 unlimited talk
$20.00 unlimited text
$29.99 unlimited data - not to include enterprise data such as blackberry
$44.99 unlimited Enterprise Data
As you can see the Sprint has no caps on data like the other two. So how can one really complain about the pricing. It's a BIG difference and to have all these people and mags complain about $10.00 is a JOKE!
I hope to be happy with my Sprint Service. I don't like change often but I am willing to make the leap.

What your not considering is what if you DON'T NEED unlimited voice minutes? It's great that Sprint is cheaper when comparing unlimited plans, but I for one, only use 200-400 mins a month total between 2 lines. So a 550 family plan with AT&T is just fine, I don't need unlimited with Sprint or even the 1500 minutes there giving us with the Evo's. I would rather pay Sprint less, since I will be using less. But they force you into a Everything plan for smartphones.
All carriers have their ups and downs.
AT&T has the fastest 3g network, but poor coverage/prices
Verizon has the largest 3g network, but poor prices
Tmobile has...umm..good prices
Sprint has good network, good prices, poor phone choices.
With Sprints Evo tax, we save ~10.00 dollars a month switching from AT&T with our current 2 x 3gs's. That is not a lot of money to save, especially since AT&T's data speeds are about twice as fast as Sprints in this area. So the Evo tax is a big deal. We have a pre-order in, I am extremely excited, we will test them out, and if we both like them, we will switch. But if they disappoint like the Pre's did, then they go back and we will keep our iphones.
Now if Sprint didn't charge the Evo tax, we would save 30.00 a month. With that kind of savings, we could accept a few snags here and there and would for sure dump AT&T.

Sprint evo Plan Pricing SUCKS!!!

I got the email from sprint regarding the evo release date and pricing. The phone will be 199.99 with 100.00 mail in rebate. The plan will be 69.99 or business plan of (starting at) 59.99 PLUS a data buy up plan for 10.00 on top of the plan. I think this is bull crap. Let me know how you feel about this $10 bucks extra for having this phone. I dont really care about 4G especially since its not available in my area

What, is an additional ten dollars a month too much for you to pay? AT&T and Verizon both charge a LOT more for their plans.
Compared to Verizon and ATT, I'd take Sprints 4G network and unlimited data use for 10 dollars more. Thanks.
$10 for a true UNLIMITED data plan?? Definately well worth it. Im on the Everything Unlimited plan, so my plan wont change with the EVO, I will still have Unlimited everything, and also a wifi hotspot. AWESOME!!!!!!!

The 10$ isn't just for 4G. It's for premium services. Ask anyone on ATT, VZW, T-Mo if they would like to pay 10 dollars extra for truly unlimited data, with no cap and see what they say.

Incorrect. Its 10 dollars on top of any plan for the Evo.
Of course I'm going to pay it! I'm not going to let a $10 increase stop me from getting the best handheld device available in the US.
I've been a Sprint customer for 12 years and price increases every couple of years are common. Phones get progressively more complex and data demands increase. When I went from a smart phone (Fuze) to a PDA phone (Diamond) the required plan increase was $10. That was 2 years ago so I am actually relieved that the increase for the EVO is ONLY $10.
Im trying to think of all the stuff i waste $10 on a month........p0rn, wendys, etc.....

I just made sure with my Sprint rep... ;-) Even Dan Hesse himself said no additional cost durring CTIA this year... I have talked to two different reps on this issue because customers were asking me the same thing... The 59.99 is for the Sprint Business Advantage Messaging and Data then you pay the 10 extra bringing it up to the 69.99, or... If you're already a Sprint individual consumer account on the 69.99 Everything Data Plan, the Evo is covered... They claim there is nothing in there system under the Everything Data Plan for such a feature and have not been notified of that feature even being added... They are currently on a 4 week training course gearing up for launch and nothing had been said...

I think your Sprint rep is wrong.
http://jbtaylor.posterous.com/more-detail-on-the-sprint-evo-4g-10month-prem
Do price increases suck? Yes. Is Sprint still cheaper than the competition and probably raising prices because they've been bleeding money for years? Yes. You can't really compare this to, say, cable companies who just raise prices because they can (having monopolies in many areas and all). Especially considering sprint is introducing cut-rate prepaid plans (a blackberry for $35/mo with unlimited text and data?), it's hard to complain about their flagship phone/network costing a little extra. If you want cheaper options, they're out there, but you won't get an EVO on them
The ONLY problem I have with the plan is that initially it was said (in various places) that there was not going to be an extra charge. As a matter of fact, it was even said in one of the early videos of the phone...

Whoops I think they dropped the ball with pricing

I see what they are going for here. They are trying to bill this as a super premium device. Their flyer "not all galaxy s phones are alike" tries to put this phone in a different league than the captivate and vibrant and thus should cost more.
I think this is a mistake. This is $50 more than the equiv iphone 4 and with the captivate selling for $50 I don't see this selling well.
If they wanted to knock it out of the park they should have kept it at 199 and that would have enticed people to get more for their money with sprint....better phone, same price; cheaper plan, more service/value. This phone will not get the adoption of the EVO and thus will not get the development. Bummer if you ask me because I think the phone looks great. Too bad the marketing people missed the mark.
I'm not surprised...for 3 reasons....
1) Sprint ALWAYS charged 50$ more for keyboard phones over none keyboard ones...
2) The retail price of all Galaxy S phones is 500$...EVO is 450$...
3) The Galaxy S hardware wise is better then both the iphone 4 and the EVO by a long shot...
It is only 50$...back in the day we paid 350$ for our TP2s and no one complained >.>

back in the day it was a different economy and different competition. for me they dropped the ball so much that i'm now looking at t-mo.
I agree that sprint definitely dropped the ball with this pricing. People will see $200 phones and will see no reason to pay $250 when the only glaring difference is a keyboard. But we all know sprint never gets it right, they chose the best of the Galaxy S line and then over price it. lol. But i understand why they priced it at that point and i for one have no problem paying for quality.
paying a one time extra $50.00 does not bother me the slightest, i mean come on, im saving lots of money from switching from at&t to sprint as is, extra $50 once isnt gonna hurt me.
I was fully expecting this phone to be 500 bucks. Us being phone geeks we know that the hardward in it is superior to the evo, but the average consumer is only going to look at the larger screen of the evo and think that is the better phone and think its a no brainer to get it since its also 50 bucks cheaper. I was planning on getting this phone off contract for 500 bucks so i am not suprised in the least. I just hope it lives up to everything i'm expecting. But coming from that POS Hero almost ANYTHING is going to be a step up
I agree sprint pricing is pretty foolish for a company desperate for new subs.
I paid $529 for my nexus, $250 for the epic is nothing.
Sent from my Nextelâ„¢ using the XDA app
It's $50. If you're that concerned over $50 perhaps you should not be spending hundreds on a cell phone to begin with?
Who cares if it doesn't generate maximum market penetration or whatever, you're not a chairman at Sprint's HQ or anything, heh. Don't worry about it. I know I'm not.
Give me the damn phone
$50 compare to the $240 in premium data charges accompanying
it is a drop in the bucket.
Sometime you guys kill me. You find any little thing to complain about. $50. Really? $50??? So is $50 going to really change your life? The epic has more features than the other Samsung S phone so why do you feel you wouldn't have to pay more? If you can't afford $50 extra for this phone then "kick rocks" and go get another cheaper phone. I was just hoping it would be around $300. I have had pocket PC phones from HTC(8125, tilt, fuze, TP2...) for the last 6yrs and they were always $500+ and they are no match for this phone. It's the price you pay for new tech. So, I will get my EPIC and you can save your $50, get another phone, and the we can see who is happier in 2 month.

Just to note, that's $240 over two years. Sure, you're signed to the contract for that long, but whatever. As many have done, I'm going to compare it to other plans on the market for what I have
My Sprint Plan:
450 minutes (unlimited nights/weekends) + Unlimited texting/pictures messaging + Unlimited data + Any mobile, any time included + 4G "Premium" data plan + insurance = $75 a month after fees and discounts (which, if you don't have a discount... what is wrong with you? One of the discounts on my line is because I bank with a credit union)
AT&T:
450 minutes + 5000 Night/weekend minutes (really?) + unlimited data + unlimited texting/picture messaging + Early nights and weekends (Standard on Sprint) + AT&T Navigator (Standard on Sprint with a data plan) + insurance= $95 a month... I'm not going to include any discounts (which, again, I'm sure you can get) because I didn't include a couple standard Sprint services that AT&T charges for.
Verizon:
450 minutes (unlimited night/weekend) + unlimited text + unlimited data + insurance = $97 (doesn't offer a lot of standard Sprint options, no discounts applied again)
T-Mobile:
500 minutes (unlimited night/weekend) + unlimited text + unlimited data + insurance = $85 (no discounts, again... no Sprint standards)
Keep in mind none of these offered free wifi hotspot capabilities and none had anything comparable to any mobile any time (T-mobile has "MyFaves" I guess...)
I am a huge fan of Sprint, but it's really the bill. $50 extra for this phone and $10 a month for "Premium" data doesn't bother me even a little. Plus, I bet if you give it a minute, you'll find it on Amazon for $100 cheaper.

$50 more than the EVO, over the life of the contract, is only $2 more per month. Not a big deal.
People on every forum are going crazy over this pricing. I agree if you can afford $200 then $250 isn't a stretch. If you can't scrape an extra $50 then maybe you should rethink buying an expensive smart phone period.

This kind of thinking drives me insane. Why don't they charge $299 then? It's only $1 more a week for two years, compared to the EVO!
Consumers are like fruit trees. Some need a shaking for their money to fall off the tree. Some, you have to actually climb the tree to take their money. But the big bonus are the ones that leave their wallet hanging low so no shaking or climbing is necessary.
A lot of you guys seem to willingly fit the last description
Another good metaphor is when you compare consumers to high-school girls...
Either buy the phone or don't. But don't act like your being victimized just because the phone exceeds your personal and arbitrarily-derived spending limit for a smart phone.
My issue with the price is they already plan to get an extra $10 a month for the 4g that I don't intend to use and now another $50 on top of that, I'd guess I'm not alone in this situation. This makes the total cost to switch from my TP2 close to $500 which is making me rethink this phone. I really wanted a nice dev phone but at this price I might as well buy a nexus or something else off contract, or just wait another couple months for the next phone on Sprint which hopefully won't be 4g.

Well if you decide to sell your TP2 it will help recoupe some of the cost.

Sprint increasing 3G data plan pricing by $10/mo

WTF is this all about ?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/sprint-increasing-new-3g-data-plan-contract-pricing-by-10-call/
The nation's third-largest carrier just announced that it's tacking on an extra monthly $10 "premium data" charge to its 3G Everything data plans.
Now only if my Evo could operate at 3g speeds that would be freaking awesome.
FYI: 70Kbps is not acceptable for 3g speeds, wtf.
Learn to read. It's only for new customers and new smartphone activations via upgrades. If you don't upgrade then you don't get the charge.

But won't I get whacked for this new $10 charge when I upgrade to the EVO 2 this June ? So will EVO 2 charge me $10 for 4G + 10$ for 3G too ?

Still a slap in the face. That means when your contract is up and you buy that new phone, you are also paying 10$ more (can anyone confirm if this is added onto the 10$ we pay for 4g?).
I'm pretty sure if you have a 4G phone that comes with a $10 charge anyway, you'll just keep paying the same additional $10. I think this extra $10 is only for people on 3G phones. So basically, everyone's paying that additional $10 now.
The "4g" fee now applies to all smartphones, that's all.

it can't get much clearer then this people, so no if you have a 4g phone you won't be paying $20, you only be paying the $10 that we already are, this additional fee is just for regular 3g phones.
Yeah. The are starting to see $ signs and possibly getting greedy. I'm going to follow this thread so I can see the same people claim that it's all lies.
The funny thing is I was talking to a rep yesterday about the new upgrade policy and brought up the $10 premium data. I asked her how come an HTC Hero doesn't have the charge and it accesses the same internet and it considered close to the Evo aside from 4G. I even told her that I would expect Sprint to make that charge mandatory on all phones being that they are seeing they can get away with it with current Evo owners.
That's the price you pay for a smartphone nowadays.
Wouldn't a better marketing strategy be to just incrrease the cost of the Everyting data plan to $79.99 and $139.99? Even with the increase Sprint's plans are the best out there. Extra charges piss me off though.

that would make more since honestly, but then what about the 4g phones then, lol, since a single line for the evo is already 79.99, that would be like tacking on another $10 on that so they could say it's a whatever fee, then someone ends up paying 89.99, cause they didn't realize they are getting screwed more then normal, though i would hope and think sprint would say the evo would only be 79.99 as any other smartphone would be.
So I guess its clear now that the David Blaine thing on the 7th is for making more of your money disappear along with premium status.

Same thing I was thinking.
Well all you "4g premium fee" complainers. Not so unfair you have to pay an extra 10 bucks anymore? LOL. Part of me is wondering if this is their way to make the 4g phone lineup more appealing..."you're gonna pay a premium anyways, why not have the ability to use 4g just in case we decide to roll it out in your city...as long as we don't go broke before then."
Welcome to the (give us money) NOW network!
my guess is that their announcement has to do with adding new cool phones that are 3G.
iphone could be a possibility, but maybe they'll say they allow any CDMA phone on their network.

Funny, when I was on the phone with a Sprint rep last month getting my unlocked EVO activated the lady said they can activate phone 'as long as its labeled with the Sprint logo'. I figured she was wrong or lying but I just wanted to get off the phone.
It's about to get worse. There are rumors that Sprint is going to drop the Premier Upgrade every 12 months program. That they will NOT give Sprint Premiere customers the rebates until their two year contract is up. IF this is the case I will be leaving Sprint as soon as they announce this. They just can't get out of their own way. One of the main reasons I stay with Sprint is because of their annual upgrades. It would not shock me to see Sprint file bankruptcy if they start to implement all these idiotic plans.

http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/58531?start=0&tstart=0&reqsorting=dec
The thing that sucks about this and might be the reason why they just didn't add $10 to plans is that corporate or work discounts do not apply to these fees and only towards the base plan. I was mad when they took the discounts off the $19.99 additional lines.
I won't leave Sprint over this because they are still cheaper, especially with our work discount but I guess I have no reason not to get my wife a 4G phone. I was hoping to save some money since we get 4G at work but not at home and she wouldn't use 4G anyway.
However, if this happens in addition to the Sprint Premier changes, I am going to get really mad for getting screwed in two places.
As long as my data is still unlimited i'll be happy. I don't come anywhere near 2gb or 5gb but if they start screwing around i'll say screw it and buy a damn contract free phone. I like my mobile internet but what they're all doing now is getting a little silly.
They have to raise prices as needed but they should've just upped the whole plan without a $10 tack on. The whole point of Sprint's pricing scheme is to keep it simple for people. That was one of the biggest reasons I came to sprint this year. That and the EVO of course

Verizon vs Sprint vs Tmobile vs ATT?

I am on Sprint and even though I love my EVO (best phone I've ever had), I am contemplating into looking at what other carriers offer as far as PRICING and COVERAGE.
Who do you guys think offers the best bang for the buck for users such as us EVO type users? Now that Sprint is gonna impose that $10 per line fee to ALL smartphones, I would like to know if the playing field has sort of leveled out where Sprint might not be the most economical and with this being said, I might have better coverage and service with another carrier at almost the same price range.
Thanks for any guidance.

IMO,
almost isn't gonna cut it for me. I mean im not into all these specs like everyone else. I see too much similarity in all these phones and at the end of the day they all of the same functions so going to another carrier for a similar phone and paying more aint even an option for me. Plus these other carriers are starting to show their colors by the changes they are making which really will keep me from moving. Increasing fee's, taking away upgrades altogether, tiered plans, no thanks. Now I come accross an article about LTE today which explains how these companies have 100% control over your data, and control what you have access to on your own phone, will throttle your data, and will make you pay for things like youtube, and other media rich apps. Ummm no way in hell im paying higher plans, and paying to use youtube. NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
Basically it depends on where you live, what services you require, etc. I stayed with Sprint so long because it was cheap and just good enough. But I rarely ever keep a phone long... generally less than a year. For ME, coverage wise its pretty much Verizon > AT&T > Sprint > Tmobile. Data speed, Verizon > AT&T > Tmobile > Sprint. (This isnt counting wimax which doesnt work inside of my crib but oddly enough LTE & HSPA do). Price, Tmobile > Sprint > Verizon > AT&T. Best bang for MY buck... Verizon > Sprint > AT&T > Tmobile.
See I dont mind paying more for better things, never have. If I did i'd drive a Camry instead of a 760.
the only reason i went with sprint/evo is its monthly rate
can't beat $70+tax with everything unlimited (not a big caller...so 600 is like unlimited to me)
the similar plans from vzn or att would be close to $100 +tax
regarding coverage
sprint is definitely one of the worst
but i have decent reception around work/school/home area
so works for me
Honestly sprint is the cheapest and even cheaper if you have some type of discount. I have the sero premium plan which is $40 a month plus the $10 4g charge then $7 insurance which comes to $57 a month before taxes. My girl has the $69.99 plan with the $10 4g charge and insurance but also has a 25% discount and doesnt even work for the company that she gets the discount for. The evo is the best phone we ever had. I understand alot of people like to upgrade as soon as the best next thing comes out but not us. We have basically unlimited plans because who really has a land line any more.
Verizon's $59.99 has only 450 minutes with unlimited text. Plus the $30 for unlimited date that's $90. $40 more then what i'm paying for sprint and $25 more for my girl.
We're very content with our evo and service we have and most importantly the price of our service compared to other carriers and we have unlimited daae. When I was reading sprint's facebook wall last night I was saying to myself like wow I can't believe people really want to leave sprint over this. But then I said maybe they're not paying the same rate that I and my girl are paying. Why would we want to switch and pay more for less talk minutes and capped data?

A lot of people dont realize that Sprints service isnt good everywhere. I didnt really realize it until I started traveling. I see this logic a lot though and if you think about it, it could apply to a lot of things. Why would I go buy a 760I when I can get this Camry? Why go buy a Sony tv when I can get this LG? Why go buy those Air Jordans when I can get those chuck taylors? Being cheaper isnt always better when it comes to what you're getting out of it. Im just saying though.
Are you willing to play the "google voice for texting" game? Do you need unlimited data? How many peak minutes do you need?

Who am I thinking of moving to? Verizon. While AT&T 3G is faster than Verizon's, it is just not as available/reliable as Verizon's. Sprint's 3G in my area (San Jose, CA) has gone from 1 - 1.5Mbps on Evo launch, to around 0.3 - 0.5Mbps now. Occasionally I find a spot I can get more than 1Mbps, but it is getting rarer and rarer. WiMax is great, but way too much power and not good enough at building penetration.

Actually alot of people do realize none of the carriers is good everywhere. So what aint good for you, is probably good for alot of other people so they wouldn't agree with what you are talking about.
From my experience your best bang for your buck might be still Sprint. I'm on T-Mobile right now and i've never had a problem since I had it or anything. They only have 2 phones i actually like (HD2 and the Nexus s). I'm going to be switching to sprint because i got a way better deal i'm getting a hook up from a friend $50/month for unlimited text, internet and 1500 minutes with an EVO. Thats with being in a family plan thats why its so cheap.
Plus I switched to T-Mobile from AT&T because it was too expensive having an iPhone and crappy signal in my area. I would be in my room in the basement and would always get 1 bar to no signal. and soon as I switched to T-Mobile using the same iPhone ive always had full bars on edge and 3G. But you can't beat the prices Sprint offers on plans though.
Oh yeah I didn't mention anything about Verizon haha I was looking at their plans and what not they are over priced. I did a random make a plan with an droid x even tho I don't like the phone with having 500 minutes unlimited internet and text it came out to close to $100 bucks a month thats too much its not worth it. Even though most my friends have verizon I can't do it. If i wanted a high cell phone bill I would have stayed with AT&T

I notice this exact same thing here in Houston, TX. What the hell is going on?! Sprint's 3G used to be great but ever since 4G started rolling out 3G has literally gone to $hit! One day 3G was working fine, then the next day it seemed like Sprint flipped a switch and no more 3G. I'm seriuosly considering going to another carrier who's 3G actually has normal data speeds where I live.
So basically I'm having to pay $20+tax extra per month (2 EVO's)... for 4G which I don't get, as well as 3G which doesn't work!!!! Go ahead and ask me if I'm a happy customer...

Holy S#$t if this is true im switching to verizon. The droid bionic looks really good and i'm sure there will be a bunch of htc phones just as good. If verizon rolls this out nationaly sprint is done for.
Also t-mobile plans are $10 more then sprint but there is no 4g or smartphone fee soo if u get more then one smartphone t-mobile is actually cheaper then sprint.

Good to know. I can feel like a getting a better deal Sprint plan now.
Sprint would have to impose a 50 dollar data fee to bring it to the same price range as the rest. Don't believe me? Check out the other plans out there. Most will be almost double what you pay for Sprint to get the same, if not less, features.

T-Mo people, teach me about your pricing structure.

Went in to a T-Mobile store yesterday to see if they had any S3's, and while looking at the display model, it said it was $279, or $229 if on the value plan. What is the value plan, and whats different between it and the standard family plan? Also, you MUST take the 5GB data plan? They had 2 employees working and about 5 people in line, so after ab out 10 minutes I left, questions unanswered.
The price is to make up the fact that you could save more with them. A value plan is when you start out a contract with a phone that you either have or bought full price. At the end, you end up saving even more than classic. You could find better deals at Wally world or Costco and they won't even make you upgrade your plan
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
So if Im walking in as a new customer, I would have to pay the $279?
I just signed up for T-mobile this week coming from sprint. Got the S3 with the value plan. I paid about $270 in the store and walked out with the phone. With the value plan, you end up paying FULL price for the phone but they basically give it to you on credit and interest free. They add an extra 20 a month to your bill for 22 months, however you can pay off the phone early. Once the phone is paid off, I am looking at about 83 bucks a month with insurance for Unlimited with 5GB data with hotspot.
All of the numbers I just gave your are ballpark (except for the extra 20) becasue I don't remember the exact numbers.
In the long run, your monthly bill will be cheaper. The classic play with 5gb is about 94 bucks a month before taxes and fees.
At least this is how I understand things. If I am wrong, someone else please chime in.
I hope this helps a bit.
To add to durhamite's response, the extra $20 is per phone on the Value plan. This is easier to explain with examples. I'll assume two lines on an unlimited voice/text/2GB high-speed data plan.
Classic price for phones: $279 (after MIR)*2=$558
Classic MRC = $139.98
Value price for phones: $229*2= $458
Monthly EIP payments (for 20 months): $20*2=40
Value MRC: $99.98
I left out activation fees and any other fees that would be the same, regardless of plan. To summarize, with the Value plan, you pay $200 less today ($100 would come back via MIR if you chose Classic), the same amount for the next 20 months, and $40 less for the last four months of your contract. Keep in mind that both plans have an ETF and if you cancel a Value plan early, the remaining balance on the phones is due immediately.
The other advantage is that with the Value plan, you wouldn't have to have the data plan on your phones. However, I'm unsure if that is from the beginning, or only after you have finished your EIP installments.
So basically on the Value Plan, TMO is giving you an interest free (0% APR) loan on your phone (EIP payments = $20 x 20 months). Assuming that your credit is good enough to qualify for this plan.
I've ran the numbers between Classic vs Value plans. Value is always cheaper, you'll save between $100-$200, after 24 months contract, depending on which plans you choose.
Should of went to Walmart, only 198 for the phone.

While it's true that you're saving upfront cost of the phone $198 vs $229 from Walmart vs TMOBile, once you add up all the 24 months contract the Value plan is still cheaper. AFAIK, you can only get Value Plan from Retail TMO stores.

Also, make sure you bookmark tmonews.com, , its ran by blogger David Beren and its a branch of phonedog. Youll find all the latest leaks of phones, and sales. But in return he called me the day before launch and had a GS3 tucked off to the side to sell me a day early!

wrong you can get the value plan w/ the s3 at costco for 390 without monthly installments. now that is a deal.
My plan:
unlimited minutes for two lines: 69.99
unlimited text for all lines: 9.99
two additional lines: 4.99 x 2 = 9.98
two lines w/ 200mb data: 4.99 x2 = 9.98
Total bill: 99.94$ - 15% employee discount = 84.95$ monthly pre taxes for four lines.
This same plan on classic would run you.... 99.99 for unlimited talk/text plus 19.99 for two add a line plus 40$ (minimum) for required data. After the discount it would be 137$ monthly.
This itself is a 52$ savings per month over 2 years. Which is 1248$ total in savings.
Provided you have to buy your phones separately it is still a good deal. My family all has smart phones of our individual choice, some that are not available on T-mobile.
I'm thinking about going to Tmobile also as sprint still doesnt have LTE. So if I get the value plan of $64.99 (500talk+text+5gb data) then I can go to costco and get the s3 for $350 correct?

390* but this is only an in store promotion so IDK if you can get in on the deal depending on where your at.
Also 5gb data is kind of a waste, I would sign up for the 2gb data unlimited for 10$ and edit the apn to keep getting unlimited data without throttling. But that's just me....
Good luck

Just as a note for those thinking about it... if you live in the area east of dallas, tx, tmobile service is the worst out of the four carriers. Bar none. Sprint beats them, Verizon and AT&T beat them without any effort at all.

Cool info man, I definitely like sprint services since they have free roaming and good coverage but my area on 3G completely sucks, but when I go on road trips I'm pretty sure I'll find some bad spots for tmobile as well

This must be a joke. Their CS is terrible now. They have no interest in getting me a phone and keeping my business. Tell them you're cancelling and they don't care!

Not a joke at all bud, if your making threats like "I'm leaving" when you call in, that may be the reason why? I've been a small business owner, and if someone has an issue, being polite could take them a long way with me. Not to say you haven't been, but I know a lot of ppl expect to just get what they want out of a business by yelling, especially when it's an over the phone situation, and not in person.
Tmo has done things that have just blown me away to keep my services. I'm positive that not everyone has had all great experiences with them, but honestly, in 10yrs they've always gone out of their way for me, while other carriers have barely ever ever been personable!
