Hello, 12 Months In And Still No App Developed - Android Software Development

I just wanted to say hello to the forum since I have only been lurking.
I actually started learning about Android over a year ago. I have a new development cpu and A855 phone. Just haven't got very far with doing anything.
I went to update my SDK to 2.2 today. Yah
I have found that every time I come up with a app idea someone beats me to it.
So Ive decided to put the hammer down this summer and just do something even if its just a bunch of hello's.
Any ideas of some practice apps or good reading to start with?
Hope to be around more
Thanks
BTW its kind of hard to post here because a search comes up with so much info. You sort of have to invent something.

do you already know java? if you do check out www.anddev.org real good site for android programming tutorials.

A n00b here with a few questions about 6.5

So I spent a good 4 hours last night (didnt get to bed until 3 AM), reading all about the Touch HD, etc. I ordered mine on Monday and it arrives today. I am really excited as I have wanted this device for a while.
Anyway, I initially had no interest in trying some sort of "cooked" version of WM 6.5 but after lookin at the screens, seeing a few videos, I think I may want to pull the trigger.
From what I gather it looks that "Miris" 6.5 ROMS are the way to go? I am certain I have the proper sticky thread. Here is where I get way confused. How does one load these up to his/her devices? Are there "how-to" attached to these ROMS? Any help would be much apreciated.
My last venture into Windows Mobile was with my old school Samsung Blackjack. I have been a loyal Apple fan up until now.
Thanks guys!

Miri is one of the well known chefs here. Others include Dutty, although he has moved to www.htcpedia.com. Once the flashing bug bites you can try a few different ones and see which one best suits your needs.
Anyway the best How to guide can be found here.
Take your time and read it through carefully. If you follow each step fully then you should not go wrong and you won't be sorry, the cooked roms are so much better than stock. (We will stay away from commenting on your last phone LOL
Link to guide provided. Any further queries on flashing should be posted in that thread.

anddroid on HD2. is it Possaoble?

I had my hd2 for 2 months and i love it. But, im getting very disappointed that it's lacking in apps and community support unlike the andriod and iphone os. I see poplur apps that are available for android and iphone but not wm. i am starting to wish i never got the hd2 and really wish i knew about the evo thats coming out soon.
on top of that i see the phone on ebay has really dropped in price to about £270 ($411)
so is it possible to put android on hd2?
Wow
Before you get blasted for making a post and not searching let me give you some advice, Search! There are a LOT of threads about Android on HD2, it's not there yet but it is being worked on. Really, type Android in the search bar and you will see all the threads asking the same thing, good luck
*INSERT GENERIC FLAME HERE*
Your luck i just dont have the energy today
While we are on this topic, is it possible to use my HD2 as a vacuum cleaner?

If you used the search functions (like most people) you would find your answer.
If you did this simple thing you would find that at this time, its not yet possible, HTC have the best group of developers on it but are having some trouble with the porting or something.
I'm just a few days away from being able to use my HD2 as a micro-oven

I bet your cooked ROMs will taste delightful!
Off: I succeeded in using my HD2 as a condom yesterday! Took me ages to port every bit of information...
On: Let's assume you haven't read the forum rules, thus you wouldn't know about the built in Search function. There`s Google. Why not Google for something (such as "android on hd2")? After all, it`s much easier to type and to read than typing a long post on a board where you need an account and where you need to wait for others to answer your question...
At least he searched the price of the HD2 on ebay...
i bet you guyz are unfriendly , help him if not *********** ,......,
anyway its still under development and needs some time i can say its 40 % to its full

It also really surprised me to see the price of HD2 drop down so quickly. Maybe mostly because not so many people can get on well with HD2, which is the best phone I've ever bought.
Easy on the flaming guys. Im sure he understands now. For all u know, u might just drive someone away from xda with negative thoughts......where as this is one of the most helpful community.
Like yourself I'm a new HD2 owner. I can understand why you might think there's a lack of apps for our device, when devices like the iPhone have 160,000+ apps. However I've found four different GPS nav apps out there (Igo, CoPilot, TomTom and Garmin), an app to make a flashlight out of your camera LEDs, a registry editor, a voice-dialler, a metal detector, a decent file explorer, a media player etc etc etc. The question needs to be asked, how many media players / file explorers / gps apps do you need on your device? For me, one of each is more than enough. Many of the iPhone apps are just double-ups of the same functionality.
After getting my phone I spent the next week on XDA searching for apps, themes, tweaks and games, trying them out and working out what works and what doesnt.
My HD2 is now running and looking mint, and I've got more games than I know what to do with. As the others in this thread have already pointed out, you do need to take the time and use the search function.
As for support, you couldn't be more wrong - it was the emmense wealth of knowledge of XDA-developers that gave me the confidence to buy the HD2. It will take you time to find the info you're looking for in these forums, but the answers are there, and you'll end up with a superior phone to the iPhone if you're prepared to give it a chance.
Drop me an email on [email protected] if you'd like to know where to find the bits you're after.
Not only he did not serch .. but hes speling sux too. !
This is one of the funniest Android response threads that I've read lmao. At least the repsonses were good natured and not hateful like some other threads have been. And I hope the OP didn't get scared away, he should think of it as his initiation. And Im sure a lot of Senior users had at least one noobie moment in the beginning.
When I had my Shadow/Juno and started modding my first post was "where is the windows folder"

[Q] Guide for develper wanna-be

Hi, this is my first post.
I apologize if there is already a thread on this subject but I couldn't find it. I have just started learning some java to begin making my own android apps. Is there a book/guide/web page/etc. that you can point me to so I can start in the right direction?
Thanks.
Try this one:
http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/hello-world.html
I wrote this thread a while ago which may be of some use to you.
The universal tutorials are taken from my software engineering course and i will be updating them as more are released. I would highly reccomend reading through them as they are incredibly helpful in learning the Java basics. There's also some useful Android java tutorials i've found there, such as making buttons, opening a new window, etc.

Ha, i am also a beginner and i've just faced the same problem of u just a few weeks ago. I've found many reference by most of them are too difficult for me.
Here i would like to recommed the 'Android development guild' it provide simple explainations and skeleton codes~ really suitable for beginners~
Thank you all for your help.

Need help with developing, eager beginner

I am a total beginner, don't know coding or anything. I would love to learn how to write code and any other android related development. I own an HTC thunderbolt and an HTC Droid Eris. I could use either phone for developing, just to learn. I have ambitions to make awesome thunderbolt roms, but I don't know how...
Please do not ignore this if you can help, I would love to become a part of this community and learn something new. If anyone could kindly please point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

It's a must that you have to learn java first

Then read everything here;

Work thru all the links on the left side of the screen.

You don't need any C or C++. You can use either, though, if you use the Android NDK, which lets you use either Java, C, or C++. However, it's complicated and you probably shouldn't use it unless you know what you're doing.
You said you wanted to write roms. If it's true you will need c too for the kernel development. If you only want to write apps for Android java is enough.
I might learn C later on down the road, but Java sounds like all i need for now as far as kernels go, whenever i get around to being good enough to writing roms Ill probably just use kernels from other devs (with permission of course).
Guys tell me learning to code and finally developing mods and apps(no roms) generally take how much time?
If u want to know my technological skill level i ld say i am not from computer engg background but I am in India's best technology institute which is also 3rd best in d world after mit and berkley.please help

It clearly depends on the app complexity.
I started from scratch (I'm basically a C developer, I didn't know anything about Java) and published my first game in 5 months, working nights and weekends.
The second one, will be hopefully published next september, so after 4 months of dev (nights and we).

I've also started as good as from scratch (i've got a VHDL background with little C/C++ experience during my study).
I've started with the book Beginning Android. I didn't read it from A to Z but just started to fool around with the examples given in the book.
Besides that i've searched a lot on the internet for examples to try to understand how they work.
A website which I still use a lot to find my answers is Stackoverflow were you can see my the questions which i've asked.
First search on the internet. There is really a lot information out there. If you really can't find the answer, just ask. There are a lot of people willing to help you with your questions.
After about half a year fooling around with examples, in weekends and evenings after my daytime job, I've released my first App on the market. I'm currently working on my second app.

Thank you for all the advice! been having a look and will make a start shortly!
If anyone else has advice to add it would be welcome as I have a feeling I will need all the help I can get!
Learn basic Java first. It's easy to play with Android developing when you have some knowledge in Java.
Android have Java and XML, so if you know Java all you need to learn is the XML which is easier because there's no logic in it.

You could also start by theming ROM's. That's where I have started and it's a lot of fun. I've put together a comprehensive "how to" page to get anyone started.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140034
Just an update, I just started learning Java today because I've been busy with other things, and I'm actually liking it so far After that I'll probably do C++ again, I forgot all of it, but knew it once upon a time...
As far as theming goes, I wouldn't mind doing that because it's generally fun, but I would rather spend my time learning how to develop first

Lessons Learnt on My Second Android App

Hey. I want to share some knowledge I've learned lately. I recently finished my second Android app and made note of interesting things I learned along the way. Hopefully you fellow devs will find it useful and save some time and effort.
Lessons Learnt on My Second Android App
Actually, if you like above I've also got two other posts about stuff I learned writing my first Android app. I'm new to XDA so I haven't shared any of that stuff here before.

Interesting read, thanks. Always good to see what new developers go through - screen density and memory would be at the top of the list for many people I think.
One idea for further reading is to research Android's non-compacting garbage collector - it's a surprise to pretty much every Java developer I think - and in some cases can influence the way you design your code.
