Use 3g with the Evo - EVO 4G General

is it possible to use the Evo with 3g connection only. because i do not have 4g in my area

My understanding is that Sprint won't allow you to buy it without the $10 added.
But some people have called customer support and the reps were saying if they didn't have it in their area, then they wouldn't have to pay for it? But they could be wrong here since Sprint's announcement was fairly clear on that requirement. They are pushing hard for their 4G service and it makes sense since they invested in it.

As stated numerous times in the past, the phone allows you to either chose to search 4G networks, and if no connectivity, connect to a 3G network.. OR... Select it to use only a 3G connection.
The Evo will work fine in a 3G network.

At this current time, you will pay +$10 a month for having an Evo activated on your account (4G or not). What they're saying is because this device will constantly be pulling data, you'll need to pay extra for that data... It's they're way of weaseling out of saying, "you'll be paying for WiMAX"..
However, with your $10, the 3G cap on data will be moved from 5Gb to unlimited.

I'm almost positive that the 5GB data cap on 3G access remains in place. So you get unlimited 4G but you're still stuck at 5GB access through 3G. The plan details I've seen show the 5GB limit for 3G AND show no cap on 4G.

The 5GB cap stays in place for some of Sprint's 3G services. With the +$10, you are allowed unlimited 4G/3G.
So basically, they allow you to go over 5GB, except for: X, Y, and Z (etc)

So, what are the excluded services from the 5G limit?

Asking the obvious question, or maybe not so obvious. What are those "except for X, Y, and Z (etc)" services?
Anyone have a breakdown or a link (straight from the horse's mouth as it were) to verify this?

Wait, so there's a 5GB/mo. cap on EVDO rev.A data (3G) on the EVO??
My Hero doesn't have that now.. why would they start a cap? I use ~20GB a month at least.

You should be getting overage charges then or you are a liar.

you know, people keep saying there is a 5gb cap on 3g data right now on an everthing plan, but the only thing I've seen the 5gb cap referred to with is the overdrive and other data-only plans. I've never seen in writing any cap on 3g data with the everything data or everything plans. I think this is a misconception, but let's get a link to show it.

One thing to be aware of is this. One of the tech sites that tested the EVO said that if you're in an area without 4g coverage then you'll want to make sure you turn the service off on the phone or it will drain your battery fast.

All of my lines have unlimited 3g, including the 4 aircards that we have. We are on a business account, though. I think that is the difference.
If you go get a new regular account now, you are likely limited to 5GB/month on phones or aircards. If you are on an old plan or a business account, you might have unlimited.

So if you didn't pay the $29.99

Would you get charge per kb usage ? Or is the $29.99 for unlimited 4G tethering but we can tether on 3g with a cap of 5gb right ? For free.
-------------------------------------
Sent From My HTC EVO 4G
If you can get your phone to tether, either through root or 3rd party software like pdanet, it's free and it's unlimited. No caps to speak of and no way for Sprint to know your tethering.
If you choose to you can pay sprint the $30 and use their built in tethering program. But why pay when you can get it for free?
To answer your question in another way, there are no data caps of anykind on the Evo unless you pay for sprint's tether, then 3g is capped at 5gig, and 4g is unlimited for tethering. On your phone, everything is unlimited.
But I was using my phone today and had just try to see if it would work. And it did. Unless the rep at radio shack added it without telling me.

I read somewhere that they either forgot to lock it up or overlooked something that will be fixed. Sprint says they will be fixing the issue in 30 days according to news stories I have read. I wish I could link the story but I honestly don't remember where I read it.
I wouldn't use more than 5gigs of 3g with that sprint program. You never know what will happen. Find a good 3rd party program and you will be fine.
Yeah you guys are right. But I need a program that tether WiFi. Not thru usb.

From what I understand, the $10/month that we are already paying gives us unlimited data in 3G and 4G.
4g is the only truly unlimited data right now, the 3g is capped at 5gb per month. Some users were grandfathered into unlimited 3g with older plans, but I believe everyone had to switch to everything plans for the Evo (not sure).
That said, from my days on the Hero forums, some guys were tethering their Xbox 360s and went well over the 5gb cap.. they incurred no overage charges. This isn't a guarantee that the same will happen for you, but others have not been charged. If a larger number of users start breaking this 5gb cap, I imagine they may start imposing overage fees.
I wish people would stop spreading false information. There is official Sprint documentation that states the premium data fee provides unlimited 3g and 4g data. If I find the link I'll add that too. It's unlimited, plain and simple, but for the evo only at this time.

I also hate misinformation, so I'll back mine up:
http://shop.sprint.com/en/legal/legal_terms_privacy_popup.shtml
The only thing that makes it possibly unenforceable is that it indicates Phone as modem, but not phone data. Technically you are using the phone as modem, but Sprint may not know this when obtained through root. Specifically this clause:
Data Usage Limitation (Mobile Broadband Cards, USB Modems, Embedded Modems and Phone-As-Modem):The amount of data transmitted over our network is measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). Sprint reserves the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred; and to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if usage either exceeds (a.) 5GB/month in total, unless specified otherwise or (b.) 300MB/month while off-network roaming. 1024KB equal 1MB. 1024MB equal 1GB.

I found the link, and that link is old news as we all already know about how cell providers secretly cap their unlimited data. This shows specifically that 4g capable devices (Evo 4g) are charged $10 extra for a feature of unlimited 3g &4g data, and that is not the only reason for the $10 fee based on Sprint.
http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/06/repeat-after-me-htc-evo-premium-data-addon-is-not-just-for-4g.html?cid=6a00d83451c9ec69e20133f0c93962970b
If we want to get into specifics of how can they prove I am using my phone in such and such a way...that's a whole different area. As far as the OP is concerned, we will have to see a few months of Evo usage from people who are tethering to see what comes of it. My money is on NOTHING happening. Free 3g data is free 3g data. I can use gigs and gigs of data without even tethering
Okay, another edit. Basically, no matter how much data we use it is unlimited as so many have posted before. We are paying for unlimited data and Dan Hesse has mentioned no caps are there and unlimited is unlimited. Makes sense on why we are going to be throttled starting this summer. I have even tethered 20GB a month with my 3GS on ATT and no charges. Technically, I see the $10 fee as bogus b/c we pay for unlimited data with the basic plan and Hesse has stated it's truly unlimited. The shady area is tethering our phones through 3rd party programs which I say is still unlimited phone data.
What I would NOT do is pay $29.99 for the hotspot (phone as modem) and rack up much over 5GB of data, haha. Until we have clear stated info that the hotspot would be free of the 5GB cap, which I'm sure we won't, I would not assume that involves the unlimited 3g data. Though 4g data should be unlimited with the hotspot.
So danknee, is that more suitable of a reply? My first could definitely be argumentative.

Much better stated.
Where did you see that data would be throttled though? I thought that referred to businesses using mobile broadband cards and was completely opt-in. Maybe I misread.

Sprint 3g 'unlimited' data cap 6.4gb not 5gb?

I think sprint's unlimited is at 6.4gb, not 5gb. If you go to sprint 'plan optimizer' and look at the top the line for unlimited is at 6400000kb.

I'm 99% sure that the number is just there to give a top limit to the graph, not an actual representation of your "cap". If the top of the graph *were* unlimited...you would never get a graph as the line would be infinitely small at the bottom no matter how much data you used. Mine shows much less because I'm using less and to show it, it picks a number not too far off.
I'll bet you could use more and the top of the graph would increase.
Basically, yes, you have unlimited transfers on the Sprint network. You've pretty much always had no cap on any Sprint phone.
But yes, Sprint has the power to cut you off and/or limit your connection speeds if you go absolutely nuts with your bandwith.
So go crazy with your music listening. Torrenting however while tethered to a PC? That'll get you in trouble.

I'll just chime in and say that I am 99.99999% sure that there is no cap. I've had the 1500 family everything plan for quite a while and I use data like a MOFO, including tethering for my netbook... never seen anything about it in my bill. If there's a cap, who cares, cause I can't reach it anyway! LOL
Yep... data to the phone itself is 100% unlimited - unless it becomes detrimental to the network. But actual usage totals don't matter. The 5GB cap only affects modem cards, WiFi connect devices and phone as modem users.
everyone seems to agree, it's truly unlimited if you're paying the $10/mo charge that you had to agree to to get the evo. you can fully saturate your 3g/4g connection 24/7 all month and not be charged.
remember, "unlimited" will always be a finite amount in that there is only so much data that can be transmitted over a given connection speed within a set timeframe.

[Q] AT&T trying to screw me on my data plan

I had an iPhone4 before I got my atrix and I had unlimited data on my iphone, so I bought my atrix without a contract in order to keep that data plan. I received the following text message this morning:
Did you know an eligible data plan is required for your 4G smartphone? Pls call 611 to select a plan and establish your 4g data connection today
Right now i am beyond angry because it seems like they are just trying to take away my unlimited data. The reason I say this is because the iPhone 4 does the handshaking to get true HSUPA and my phone does not. Therefore I am paying for a plan with a service that doesnt even exist, where my original plan (for the iphone 4) actually covers HSUPA. Does anyone know a way around this? I definitely dont want to lose my unlimited data. Is there anyway to get out of my contract? I would just as soon switch carriers before giving into paying for a crappy data plan (no offense to anyone who has the plan, you just didnt have the option ) on a crappy carrier.
Thanks for the help in advance.
go on their website att.com
you can actually select an unlimited 4g plan i m pretty sure
pick it and report back
I switched from iPhone unlimited to Android unlimited - they will let you do that. But you will not get HSUPA until the phone is updated.

They don't want the unlimited plans out there. The are going to force all non I-phone users to go to tiered plans. Once they take it off, you will not be able to get them to give it back either. If you don't go with the tiered plan, when u use the non iphone device, they will throttle your throughput at 2 gb. It is a horrible decrease in speed. Still have unlimited, only it is extremely frustrating when you hit the 2 gb limit. Remeber, in AT&T's eyes, it's not about you.

it's most likely because you didn't switch your current data plan to a non-iphone smartphone plan. they are different plans in the way that they handle data. you can keep your unlimited when switching across data plan types (i.e. i went from BB data plan to regular smartphone unlimited). but since you didn't switch it over, they flagged you since your IMEI gives up that you are no longer using an iPhone.

When I went to the AT&T store last week to get my Atrix, I specifically asked them if we would have to get a new plan for 4G, or could we keep our grandfathered unlimited plan from my iPhone. Unlimited data plans are also for 3g ONLY! Not sure if that was mentioned. If you lucky enough to live in an area where H+ is live you have to go to the 2gb or 4gb data plan to get those speeds, which right now are barely faster than 3g download and the upload is horrible.
You also didnt have to buy the phone out of contract. I bought mine with my upgrade for $200 and was grand fathered over too my 3g data plan which is called the Smart phone unlimited.
Verizon with there 17-20mb download on there LTE network is looking pretty good now. But thats still not even live in my area so it doesnt madder.

I have no idea what that "4G" sim is going to do for you considering it won't be needed until AT&T rolls out LTE. The so-called "4G" that the Atrix uses (HSDPA+) is still a 3G technology and 3G sim cards work on it.
I just checked my bill and it says that my current data and messaging plan is set to expire on 04/07/2011. I can get a Smartphone Unlimited data and 1500 messaging for the same price. Haven't made any change yet. Will call AT&T Monday and see what happens.

Sprint's Network Loses Badly in National Speed Test

Sprint has proven once again that their Network vision upgrade needs to have happened yesterday. These results show not only that sprint's network is struggling in some areas but MOST areas.
They only managed a 480kbps average EV-DO (3G) speed, the slowest speed tested. Their 4g and 3g networks were also some of the least reliable networks tested.
Get the picture Sprint. We need a real 4g network on a real spectrum. A 2500mhz Wimax network spottily thrown together isn't going to cut it, neither is 10 year old backhaul. It's make or break time Sprint.
Are we looking at the same chart?
Sent from Godot's place.
All I care about is if I get good reception.
And I don't.
Should have come to Baton Rouge. They would have scored 0.05 megabit on the speedtest all day long!
The old adage holds true, you get what you pay for..
Well, first I'd like to mention these stats offer no souce or details on how/where and how many times these figures were tested, which I usually like to see (I'm the skeptical type)
That being said, I agree. I'm lucky to be in Chicago, pretty decent 4g and 3g coverage, but 3g's been slowing down more and more and it shows in many places. They need to pick it up on 3g (their main network). No reason for a tower to only offer 1.2 (1 T1 line minus 300kbps for sprint control) even at 4am on a Tuesday in the suburbs, when Verizons almost always 2mpbs or more with full bars on 3g (and has been for years), same network technology. Its data speeds on 3g I've never been quite happy with.

Ya know, they all suck right now. Verizon's going metered and is cdma (less support), T-mobile's going to get eaten by AT&T because our government can't do the only thing it's supposed to do while it's busy doing everything it isn't supposed to do, Sprint is suffering 3g data slowdown, and again is cdma which means less support.
I've been toying with an idea lately to get the World version GSII, do the iphone trick (get an att sim card with basic voice, pop that in a 2g orig iphone to get on the edge data plan which is ONLY available as unlimited, pop that in a 3g iphone to get auto-upgraded to the $30, grandfathered unlimited data plan) and use it on AT&T with unlimited data. The ONLY issue I have with this (as I'd have my unlimited data, GV for sms) is I'd be paying money to a truly terrible entity (AT&T) and I sincerely morally object to everything they're doing. And yet it would mean a much much larger community...

I know someone who says they can see their data speeds die on Verizon with evry new phone launch. Especially the 4g signal.

My sister is doing an even easier and cheaper trick. Get a t-mobile vibrant or motorola defy for $200 then unlock it your self and use it with a $15 a month medianet unlimited data plan. You could take advantage of at&t's $50 unlimited everything prepaid plan too. You just need to make sure to get a phone which works with att's 3g frequency bands (moto defy/vibrant/i9000/sgs 2/rogers nexus s) but isn't on their system as a recognized smart phone ,(in other words one they don't sell).

Until Sprint gets rid of their unlimited data plan, I will tolerate them for now.

+1 Hopefully they won't go the route of everyone else. If they did I'm going back to a dumb phone because unlimited data is the main reason I have a smartphone.

Only problem with this is I don't believe the i9000 or gsII (or any world phone) works on tmo 3g aws bands. Only att plus they'll be att soon...

yeah Verizon did this test.. and im sure they did it in Verizon areas.. These test are like benchmarks on our phones... yeah its cool to say.. hey I have the fastest internet on my phone.. but truthfully it doesn't mean anything.. I personally use my WIFI for the most part and use my 3g/4g randomly when im bored shopping with my wife.. besides... I have unlimited 3g/4g.. I guess sprint lost bc of that too?

I also use wifi most often when I am surfing with my phone. This test was performed by Verizon? I didn't catch that part. Where did you see that?
In the end Sprint will show us that sticking with them meant nothing. As soon as Verizon gets their tiered data underway. Sprint will go that route too, and give us just a little more than ATT and Verizon. They know we will have nowhere else to go! I just wish I had ditched sprint in February when I started too. Verizon 4G is in my area and i'm stuck with slow speeds.

Well, the whole line is highlighted and there's no source listed so, probably. We still haven't seen any testing method data so I call shenanigans til I see a source named.
That said, my moms droid charge pulls in 16/4 (my home internet is only 12/1.5). But that's 4g and not all their new phones are...

The test was done by PCMag (http://www.pcmag.com/Fastest-Mobile-Networks-2011)
That being said, my work is a VZW Deadzone, where-as I get at least some Spring signal. I average 9mb/1.5mb down/up on 4G in and around my neighborhood and if my 3G signal can be slower than what is on the chart, its still far faster than anything I need to do daily. If I need more, I'll go 4G/Wifi and be done with it. I abuse the hell outta my unlimited, averaging upwards of 6GB a month data on my phone alone (the wifey also has a Epic on the plan) and I've now thrown a GTab 10.1 into the mix and tether of the phone.

Undoubtedly there is a correlation between the all-you-can-eat data and the slow speeds - ie burden on the network.

Sick and Tired of Sprint

In about a month I am leaving Sprint due to their terrible terrible horrendous data speeds in south Louisiana. I also have lot's of doubt and trust in their huge Network upgrade and I don't feel like waiting a year more. I'm getting Verizon and the Galaxy Nexus. If you experience similar frustration with Sprint feel free to vent and post speed test results etc. Does anybody know any way to get out of contract without an ETF?
haha, i live in baton rouge and i dont like sprint either. i was thinking of switching to Verizon when my contract ends since they have 4g lte in baton rouge.
Yes their 3G speeds suck but having true unlimited is important to me since I stream a lot of music/video so that makes up for it.
See ya! Jk. Sorry to hear about your speeds but their network upgrade is definitely worth the wait

No. Will be waiting for their network upgrade. Sprint is the only network which allows a true nexus with wallet. I don't need to be forced with some apps which apparently can not be removed unless you root it.

If you're on a family plan and receiving employee discount pricing they're raising the price next month giving you a chance to get out without ETF as its a breach of the ToS.
Yup!!
I have been contemplating leaving sprint also. They may have truly unlimited data but in reality you dont use much data via sprint network as it takes forever to load anything in Baton Rouge. O and guess what, the data unlimited plan is not truly unlimited. The will cut off your service if you use over 5 gb (may be less) of data on 3g. It is only the use of 4g which is truly unlimited.
They have been saying Baton Rouge would have 4g since the evo came out and yet still nothing. The sad part is Hammond has 4g and the population is not even 1/8th of Baton Rouge's pop. I doubt BR will ever get 4g.
As far as getting out ETF free, good luck with that. I have tried every way possible with no luck. But what I have not done, which would definitely work, is stream as much youtube and download huge files as much as possible or force your phone into roaming on data and calls for consecutive months

No... They are unlimited on anything, how many times do people have to say this. 5gig cap is for hotspot and connection cards

It's not the price they're raising but the amount you save from your employer discount is going to be a lot less. So it's definitely going to cost you more. They've been doing a lot of things that have been making people want to switch. They charge for "premium" data, completely stopped expanding 4g, scrapped the annual upgrade, killed the premier status, and now this? They're making it really hard for anyone to want to stick around...

Anything is "a lot less" when people are just looking for an excuse to cancel. The highest discount will be losing $5.40 a month, but those are rare, most people will go down just a few cents to a dollar a month.
I actually like what they've been doing and the direction they're headed, it is putting a stop to all these people talking advantage of what they have to offer. Where I live, my 3G gets over 2Mbps and 4G gets 10 so my unlimited data works great

4g is in the Best Buy area of Hammond. It doesnt show up on sprints map for some odd reason. if you dont believe me go to the area and try it out
If you want out, roam like a mofo. You have to roam a certain percentage in order for them to boot you.

I dont use tethering on my phone because I have wifi around most the places I go not to mention the data speeds in baton rouge are slower than dial-up, so tethering woudn't be much use. It was one of those months I was downloading a bunch of different roms though.
Sorry to burst your bubble but not all sprint customers are bad customers. I had them send me a letter a time before that to tell me I was using too many roaming minutes the previous months and when I checked my bill for the prior months I only had about 30 or 40 minutes roaming for all the months. I called them and they were at a loss for words
