So please tell us what is improved!
Since I have a break in X2 usage until SE will release a working upgrade.
I'm especially interested in:
1. Tablets inserting in Word.
2. Speed of opening bigger Word docs.
3. Inserting pictures in Word.

XDA to get Windows Mobile 2003!!! WE ARE UPGRADEABLE!!!

From Infosync:
O2 XDA to get Windows Mobile 2003-ified
By: Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 23rd June 2003, 04:05 GMT
Mobile network operator mmO2 today announced its intent to bring to market an upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC - the successor to Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 platform - for its O2 XDA WAN handheld. Currently undergoing internal alpha testing, mmO2 could neither comment on whether the upgrade would be made available to users for free, nor at what time the upgrade could be expected to arrive. The O2 XDA is currently powered by Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition.
This is great news, that means that most likely, we all users that have the Xda in all flavors, will be able to upgrade to 2003, even if the Carriers don't release an official upgrade with this I wouldn't be surprised if someone comes out with a 2003 SE ROM!!!!!!
WOW ! Great news !!!
What's your sense about this vis-a-vis the XDA Dev ROM? Will the update to 2003 essentially 'erase' the XDA Dev ROM? If not, what features/functionality will be left over after the 2003 upgrade?
Thanks,
TM
We will, ofcourse, study the 2003 ROM is great depth, and we will release a Special Edition 2003 ROM if that is anywhere near possible. First signs look positive, and we'll be looking into it further soon.
(Don't count on it, but it would ofcourse be hilarious if the Special Edition 2003 pre-dates the official release...)
Windows Mobile 2003 for pocket pc
Check this out for the upgrade
www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/products/pocketpc/about/2003/upgrade.mspx
If this can be pulled off then what a result!
Power PC 2003 upgrade
I followed the link given
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/products/pocketpc/about/2003/upgrade.mspx
but fail to see anywhere where it explicity mentions that an XDA is possible.
I attended the 1.5 mostly programmers oriented webcast from microsoft. It became clear that whilst PPC 2003 may be a relatively easy upgrade to PPC 2002, smartphone release is not so easy. They mentioned that code has been sent to individual manufactures (i.e. the smartphone code) to be integrated by that manufacturer.
I have consulted the http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices/xda_index/0,,170,00.html
website for upgrade information, but IMHO O2 has not done themselves any favours in their support of the basic XDA functionality on that site, so it was no great suprise that I could not PPC 2003 smartphone edition upgrade information there.
If anybody has definitive information on the upgrade i.e. a weblink then I recommend it is posted here please.
Taken from http://www.pocketpcmag.com/Nov03/windowsmobile2003.asp
"All Pocket PC 2002 devices and the original iPAQ Pocket PC 2000s are physically capable of being upgraded to Windows Mobile 2003...
Manufacturers of the Pocket PC Phone Edition devices are in the process of testing Windows Mobile 2003. This will delay the introduction of Phone Edition devices using the new software, and any upgrade for existing users. At the time I wrote this article, no upgrade plans had been announced. Again, check with the manufacturer of the device for upgrade information. As soon as we find out, we'll publish it here in Pocket PC magazine. "
upgrades cost money . . .
Anywhere that I have looked I have seen a price for the upgrade. normally around the US$50. This does seem reasonable, not that I would pay that of course.
With this in mind what issues would the XDA-Developers encouter when manipulating this ROM...
As mentioned in the ROM SE we are personally responsible for adding the extra software, updates etc. Will we see an update here first....
Martin
o2 have mounting costs, and are not doing too well as a business. I know this from many friends who work there. They are not as strong a position as vodafone or t-mobile, hence this probably translates into slow moving, and lack of support. Additioanally, the 2003 might not be a free upgrade because of this.
PDF file, instructions on how to do the upgarde
Hello
i have posted a link for instructions on generic Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition operating system, specifically for xda. somewhere in this forum click on search if you are interestd

Windows Mobile 6.5 next month!

"Software giant Microsoft is apparently getting ready to drop its trousers and unveil its assets at the Mobile World Congress event at Barcelona next month. "
"Microsoft is also expected to unveil Windows Mobile 6.5 with the new UI at the Mobile World Congress. "
XPERIA will get the upgrade i am sure!
Hurrah - "new UI" hopefully more easy to use!
This post does not help anybody for some reasons:
1) You did not state the source of your informtion
2) Most people may already have known this
3) this is only speculation (anyway I am expecting the announcment soon too)
4) no one knows what to expect from WM6.5 except Skynet...
sorry, i hope to not offend you but thats what came up in my mind...
It will be interesting to see if Xperia actually gets the update to WM6.5, but I'm not so sure. One can only hope... In any case, surely the developers at XDA will cook something up
Here: http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=2485
Nothing has been said about a new XPERIA. SE haven't announced its new partner yet and previous reports state that the new XPERIA should be unveiled late 2009...
Comeradealexi - Thanks for letting us well me know as it means I've got something to google now on my lunch break.
here it is if you don't want to click
"Neowin, quoting unnamed sources close to Microsoft, is claiming Mobile World Congress (February 16-19th), will not only be bringing Windows Mobile 6.5, but also a slew of Microsoft services rumoured previously to the Windows Mobile platform.
“SkyBox” is a service for users to sync a phones information with the web. Microsoft will be offering automatic backup and restore services, access and management of phone data and provide easy communication and sharing with others. The service will also allow syncing of contacts, email/SMS, calendar items and pictures into the cloud. Neowin adds a new detail, not rumoured previously, that this service will be available not only on Windows Mobile, but also for other phone OS’s.
“SkyLine” will be aimed at small businesses. Offering similar functionality to SkyBox, businesses will be able to setup their phones with Microsoft’s Exchange hosting with their own domain names.
“SkyMarket” is Microsoft’s mobile marketplace, a competitor to Apple’s AppStore and RIM’s Blackberry application center.
Neowin also claims that their sources confirm the leaked screenshots from earlier this year are in fact real, despite being panned for having icons stolen from the Apple OSX desktop, and that they represent design concepts.
Looks like we do have quite a bit to look forward to in a months time after all."
so make of that what you will

All joking aside, I am looking forward to any updates made to Windows Mobile Professional. Standard got a real nice interface boost with 6.1, and we didn't get squat in the "looks" department.

I've been running Windows 7 for about 2 weeks now, and I'm with you 100%. I'm not running it as my full time OS, but it is definitely running better than Vista did in beta/pre-SP1.
yeah - they've done it right with windows 7 - they'll have done it right with mobile 6.5/7
It seems somewhat likely that the X1 will get the update as we haven't heard a word from sony about any software updates whatsoever. What's the use of the software update utility if no updates are made? Maybe they haven't released anything because they have to wait until 6.5 is announced.

More likely, since they've parted ways with HTC, they've abandoned updating the Xperia X1, so not only will we not see Windows Mobile 6.5, we won't even get any firmware updates, like the retarded problem where turning off WIFI also turns of Bluetooth at the same time, or where Bluetooth keeps turning off by itself (workaround is Mortscript, but why do we need workarounds?!), etc. etc.
The HTC Touch HD has ALREADY had 2 or 3 updates, and it was released later than the Xperia X1. Where are the Xperia updates? NONE. NADA. ZIP.
I have an Xperia X1 but I'm starting to feel mighty bad here... I'm not feeling any love from HTC or SE and I doubt (and I hope I'm wrong) that we will see any updates, ever, for our machines.

LOL not a chance. I believe in the ZunePhone or WinPhone more than this.
Edward is a bit of a nut-job. almost all his stories irritates me

Who knows but currently I don't believe
Mobile hardware will ever = desktop one.
Lol. Why you talkin' bout 25 or 150 MB?!? 16 GB on your phone is not really anything special TODAY. Think about where we've been 2 or 3 years ago - 1 GB was quite good. -> In two years, our mobiles will have 256 GB. Why would you care if Win 7 (or 8, by then) uses 9 or 10 GB?
Both of those articles are fluff and full of speculation. It sounds like an anti-MS article. Typical journalism where one writes a sensationalized article that has no substance behind it. Why is it that Android and WebOS can start from scratch and gain market share, but WM7 can't ?
I do believe that MS has it's work cut out for it though. In general media, WM barely gets mentioned in the same breath as other stuff on the market (Apple, Android, WebOS. Blackberry). However, of all those companies, Microsoft has the most resources and tricks up it's sleeve. It has the leverage of the other markets it dominates such as Exchange, Windows desktop, Zune (not dominate ), XBox, Bing/Yahoo, etc (Apple has Mac -> iPod -> iTunes-> iPhone). I see no basis on why MS would just quit and give up...hell, they just bought out Yahoo search!

I think MS has learned it's lesson to NOT put a desktop OS into a small mobile device (they've been there, done that ). A mobile device needs an OS specifically designed for mobile devices. Maybe some things "under the hood" can be similar to make it easy for developers. MS would be smart at integrating Zune and WM7, which I think they're doing.
OMG! Windows Mobile is dead!!!!
LOL...
(in case you can't tell this is said in a sarcastic tone)
lmao if Windows Mobile was to expire, then Windows Mobile 7 and 6.5 wouldn't have even be announced.

Well I'm not claiming anything,
however you miss the point - the article says "IN 2 YEARS"
so 6.5 and 7 are now, so not related.
In business nobody quits or stops anything immediately in one day,
it's a long process.
We are talking about microsoft here. a company that will lose money just to keep there place (and try and make it to number one) in a market.
i got one word : XBOX
have a look how much money they have lost to keep it on the market, and now it has a big part (although the xbox360 will end up last in sells. they still pumping money into it and having the name recognized).
The thing with WM is that microsoft did not see it as important till the iphone came out and now they are spending alot of time and money on the os and apps(6.5 pushing it more into the main market, and seven putting it up with the top user friendly os).
I don't want to see Microsoft fail. I see more and more Mac users and iPhone owners at my school, everyday.

All stars VS. MS Windows

I'm starting to collect all fact's about MS and other software developers.
It's something in the air lately.
1. MS want to release PDA with their brand
2. MS don't wont to update to WM7 other devices.
3. When I look at newest wm7 I see that its first try to tie client with one
brand , like apple did with appstore and secured software.
4. WinMo Market place it's a pathetic fake of appstore, Yesterday day I
check that I need a 120 sec. to check all software their offer, against
millions of application in appstore its shame to release something like that.
( I'm not fan of apple, and it's not a commercial )
on second hand :
5. A lot of software developers withdraw their support for WinMo ( skype -
we know that it's not bugged like their claim, abby mobile reader, google
goggles, and a lot more... there is plenty of good application for symbian
or android or... but no support for WM )
6. MS respond with their stupid ( it's very very kind word ) policy about 3
buttons phone for upgrade. ( wm7 )
I think that's all politic and economy war. But we are victims.
HTC make good move to use Android OS and make business with google - I thing it will be small revolution in mobile market. There is possibility that MS will stand alone as a brand for mobile and software.
What do You guys think about it ?
hmmnn.... got mixed feelings about this..
Maybe I'm to far in my conspiracy theory...
maybe there will be an official androind rom for hd2? the we can trow out ms at all.

I didn't want to release it for Mobile because of the nature app and the fact that the majority of windows 10 mobile users are going to be left behind since the anniversary update will be unsupported in the next update.
Feel free to keep adding mobile support though.
