gps settings - eXpo GW820, GW825 IQ General

I have the expo with all the spb programs. I am trying to set the gps settings so that my GM won't keep scanning bluetooth. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Could you elaborate a little on what your looking for? im a little confused on the question...

Sorry about that.
I am trying to get the proper settings for the GPS to be recognized using Garmin. It keeps searching bluetooth.
My Omnia i900 settings are port 7 and 9 baud of 38,400. My blue tooth is correctly paired, but I want to use the garmin and not the navigator that att makes you pay for.
I tried those on this phone, to no avail.
Also trying to get the att junk off of it too.

Are you using Garmin Mobile XT or a different Garmin program. I remember reading somewhere that If you are not using Garmin Mobile XT then it will try to connect through bluetooth. However, if you are using Garmin Mobile XT then give this a try. Load up Garmin. You should see the screen that is attached. Click on the signal bar in the upper left hand corner. Now click Disable in the lower right hand corner. After that you will see a list on the screen. Choose Use GPS Intermediate Driver. Click enable in the lower right hand corner. Now your GPS should be configured to work with the GPS driver on your phone. as for the AT&T junk I recommend using a custom rom or cooking one.

what are the manual gps settings? i am trying to get igo8 to work and it wont detect my gps.
edit; after flashing darks v3 rom my gps works great at port 4 and baud 9600

I was just playing with Google Maps myself. If I figure it out I'll post the answer. Meanwhile, anyone know how to get it to work?
http://www.htcwiki.com/page/Configure+Smartphone+for+Google+Mobile+Maps+with+Bluetooth+GPS
Found this info but don't have time to test it. If you becide to give it a try please post any notes and results.
I am looking for the same answer.
There appears to be lots of posts on the net around registy edits to configure bluetooth gps devices and also some on needing other gps software to "activate" the 'software' port first so that google maps can see this port.
I only have 3dtracking and gm on my ameo. 3dtracking only works if you configue it to the hardware port (port 5) .
So I'm looking for a tweak that allows gm to see either the hardware port or software port without assistance from anther program.
I am not concerned about having multiple gps software running and as the s/w port is proving tempremental seemingly I would be quite happy for a fix to work directly with port 5.
Any ideas ?
I gave up on google maps and used the Live! Search app instead.
This actualy seems better than google maps, and works directly to com5 so no need for messing around.
If you get GM working , let us all know though!
Same problem here - but use Live! Maps instead, works firsttime and very well..
Seems that the google maps app doesn't interrogate the WM5 GPS applet very well, and there's no menu options to force it. Maybe there's a regkey you can change, or some way to tell it where the GPS is, but until someone finds it, MS will continue to get my viewing...

I also have given up on Google Maps. Installed Live Search and it seems to be better and worked directly with Com4 on my x7500. I noticed that when going at 100 miles per hour, the maps have problems loading fast enough though. ;-)
Live Search is nice and even though I kept Google Maps loaded on my phone, I'm using Live Search more when TomTom doesn't meet my need. I like the aerial views of Live Search and traffic map.
It seems to me the GPS w/ the Advantage does not want to play nicely with WM5 GPS applet. Even when I change the software port, nothing I have recognizes it through that port. Only ports 4 and 5 seem to work. Com port 5 seems to be the true hardware port.
Everyone seems to have had problems the first time around with Google Maps. Thats because it looks for a GPS signal through com port 2, and only com port 2 (can't be changed). Of course, this was never made public knowledge, so it took people a bit to figure out.
So until someone provides a software fix for either, we're out of luck.
GPS Possible Soution.
First, my control panel GPS settings are COM4 for software, COM5 for hardware and the Auto checked.
I use Pharos GPS / Ostia. If I load Ostia and use com5 the gsm lite blinks green then yellow then green then yellow. I think the yellow means the gps port is on???
Ostia get it's satellites then works as expected.
THEN...... I turn the Ostia GPS off. Change the port to COM4 and it works just fine, however the blinking changes from yellow then green to just green.
If I open Ostia with COM4 I can't get GPS to work. It won't even let me use the port. If I change it to COM5, it blinks green then yellow, gets the fix, then change to COM4, it blinks just green, then eveything is fine.
I don't think the Control Panel GPS Settings work unless the GPS is turned "on" or "activated" by using the hardware port first.
Is there someway to "activiate" it manually?
As far as google maps, COM2 is not forced. I used it on my Tytn with a bluetooth GPS on COM8 for the software port.

Interesting, google maps worked for on Com 8? I had a Hermes (8525) as well, but it only worked on software com port 2. I then read that most others were only able to get it to work on com 2 as well. Of course, you had to tweak the registry in order to even access the GPS panel. I did read about someone with an Ipaq w/ built in GPS who had it working on com port 6, but then again, perhaps his hardware port was com port 2.
Was com port 8 your hardware port or your software port, and was the other port set to, then? Just trying to get an idea for what worked and didn't.
On the Advantage, I'm not even sure if changing the software port to emulate another port for the signal in the GPS panel even does anything. So far, my guess would be no.
I have the same problem with all of you. The GPS of X7500 works fine for the programs "Destinator" and "GPS Tuner" but it doesn't work for "Google Maps" in any port and combination of ports. Any solution from Google or HTC?

Garmin XT versus TomTom - Why is Garmin Slow to track location?

Hi all, I am currently testing Garmin XT and I noticed that there seems to be a bit of a lag in the GPS when you are driving around. I have TomTom currently which is flawless. Is there perhaps some setting I missed with Garmin or is this just the way it is???

I believe this has to do with the nature of the software drivers and the way they interact with the hardware of the phone. It is something that may be different from phone to phone.
Ahhh darn thats a shame I am running a mogul. What I like about Garmin is the fact that it has gas prices and traffic for free unlike TomTom. Anyone else experiencing the same issue?
seems to work fine for me, but I use it with the bluecharts maps and not any street maps.
Hmm well I just wanted to post a follow up not sure if this will help since I haven't tried on the streets yet. I went into the settings and by default Garmin had selected "Use GPD Intermediate Driver" which worked for me but again I saw a lag while driving around and frequent redrawing of where I was relative to the map.
So now I just went back to the settings and hit "disable" which then brought up a list "Use Bluetooth GPS" "Use GPD Intermediate Driver" and "Use Serial GPS". I then selected "Use Serial GPS" and selected COM4:COM4. I had to do this a couple of times the software would scan but not let me keep COM4 but after a few tries it found COM4. I don't know if this will make everything faster but I will keep everyone posted.
Well even after the changes I made seems garmin is just slow tracking and when you are driving that can really suck.

How slow is slow? I use Garmin now, and used to use Tomtom, and while it might seem that the arrow doesn't move quite as often, it still seems to be doing what it's supposed to. Is the screen not updating as often?
I have both on my Mogul -- I just updated the Garmin with the 2008 maps and tested it the other day on a 2 hour trip - it was dead on but I did use a blue tooth GPS antenna Holux 240Slim instead of the built in GPS -- I find the built in is dependent on a data connection which I will lose when I go out of area.
I noticed the Garmin was within a few feet of being dead on -- see an exit and there it was on the map - including the talking parts when I was told to exit right, etc
Mule
I've used both and I have found that XT is slightly slower in its frame rate then TOMTOM. However, I have been a long time GPS user and LOVE the fact that I can now load all of my topograhical and marine maps to my P4000! The detail and accuracy of XT makes TOMTOM maps look like something off Dora the explorer. TOMTOM didn't even have roads drawn in for my home town. It was just a peininsula into water. On XT you even see the ATV paths that follow the coast! With the topo maps you can pick a lake, hike to it and fish your brains out! XT takes it off road. Tomtom is of no use in that department. Its a hikers dream: music, communications, nav, camera and more in one small device. To bad the P4000 isn't waterproof. My Garmin Rino must be feeling left out....
you might want to check which driver you are using... I'm on 42020... I know I had problems with 42030 (resetting my clock and what not) and heard 42040 had issues to.. just a thought...
i believe all gps lag one second behind real time. tomtom is the only software that predict 1/2 and 1 second ahead.
btw, does anybody know how to limit garmin xt auto zoom? sometime it zoom out way too much.
you can turn off auto zoom but you can't "control" it.. the default is to zoom out to show next turn... I just keep it turned off...

GPS device

Hi
I just bought an GPS-Mouse, in order to make TOMTOM usefull.
It worked a couple of days ago, but TOMTOM can't find the GPS-device now.
Does somebody have some usefull tips for me?
(GPS mouse is a Adapt AD-500 GPS Bluetooth receiver)
Cheers

Yup same here, Holux M-1200 with iGo MyWay software. But are you sure you set up a secure connection with the bluetooth and set it as a com port 6 or 7 with the correct baud rate? Did you follow everything step by step in your manual for the tomtom?
Well, I tried to follow the manual, but it didn't really help me. There was very little information in the manual, and the information in it was not very clear. The fact is, that it worked a couple of days ago, and now I cannot connect anymore...
I have a motorola BT GPS, supposedly motorola is rock-solid, but I've had troubles with it at times. Rebooting the phone would work occasionally, turning off the GPS would work occasionally, turning off both would work occasionally, if you get the picture, no ONE thing did it each time.
Recently, I found Franson GPSGate (the full version) This keeps a good connection with the bluetooth GPS better than it ever has been before, even when walking away from and then back to the gps device. It also generates a comport that multiple GPS programs can use at once. Very handy little program.
Hope it helps someone.
itrek bluetooth for me....
Do you know about the settings, External GPS icon on the Wing? Go in there and make sure you've got com port set i have mine at program port 6 which is where most gps like to sit for some reason but if it's not working for you play with that setting unfortunately it's trial and error but play with it. I don't know what you'd need "hardware port" for but since you're using a mouse and not a bluetooth unit can't hurt to play with that too, and in the last screen be sure you've got "manage automatically" checked, or maybe you need to uncheck it. All stuff to play with. Did you put any software on lately that could have hosed something? Did you try reloading tom tom? See if you can find one of those freeware utilities that talk to the gps unit and see if it can find it.
This device doesnt have a internal gps correct ? I always thought it didnt but I see some people talking as if it does. Then again, you all wouldnt be buying externals if that was the case.

GPS

anyone put gps navigation on there phone and if so how did you do it would really love to do and which navigation did you use garmin or tom tom
i have garmin on my shadow but, i can't get it to work......i only have com port 6 and seven showing and i think i need com 4. The garmin works on my Blackjack 1 no problem. I remember having the same problem with some of the other HTC made phones and GPS, I just can't remember how i fixed it or which cab files fixed it! LOL! I'll figure it out and let ya know what fixes it.
I did install a file from modaco and also installed gpsid but my shadow still only shows com 6 &7. I do have both google maps and microsoft live search installed and running nice but, i really want to use garmin as it has the maps on the storage card and don't need to be downloaded from the net.
I don't have any service on this phone as yet, its locked to tmobile and i have ATT so until i can figure out how to unlock it i might just get a prepay simcard, if they have data.
I'll keep ya posted though!
I hope ur talking about a blutooth gps because the shadow doesnt have gps built in.
ya BT GPS, the problem i'm having is the same i had with my 8525, it just won't find the gps reciever. On the shadow i'm just showing com6 & 7 and i tried a file from modaco and gpsid but neither worked. W hat was funny was that when i set the hardware setting to the port i have set for the BT gps and then have garmin scan it finds it for a second and the bt activity light on the gps flashes for a second the stops. It will never fully connect since the gps is not a built in device.
I use a sm bt gps and I do not have any problems at all. It is one that I picked up at buygpsnow.com or something like that. It usually connects to about seven sats and I use windows live search to chart my course. You could also use gmaps both are free. You can change com ports and add them through the activesync panel also. By the way I live in southern NH if that helps give you an idea of the ****ty reception around here and the bluetooth is good enough to drive by.
ya i can use Live search and google no problem but, i installed my Garmin software and it won't find my BT GPS. I had the same problem with another HTC phone and i even have the software to fix it.........i just can't remember what or where it is! LOL!! I use the Garmin on my BlackJack 1 with no problems and i was just playing with the shadow and thought it would be cool to see it run on it.
you can add more com ports through activesync and see if that works otherwise google is your friend. oh i see what your saying. Maybe the garmin only works in windows if it can read the software siugnature?
Well i have the garmin software running on my BJ1 and it works fine but i can set the port for my BT GPS to com port 4 and it works, i had this same problem on another HTC device and i can't remember what i di with the cab file that fixes it. LOL i have slept since then!
I get about 2-3 phones a month and i play round with them, mod them alittle bit then trade for another one, it is just away to keep me busy as i am hyperactive! LOL! I'll figure it out and then post back here with what i find.
i have a BT GPS and use it with google maps, MS live maps, and navizon all the time. no issues at all. (well i did, but now i have my G1, so the shadow has taken the role of backup phone atm...)
The COM port number will not affect the compatibility unless the Garmin program does not support COM higher than 5 for example which is very unlikely just make sure that when you setup the COM port to make an outgoing COM port and not an incoming one
Besides this, you can head to GPS passion, look there for one of the many testing applications and use it to test the GPS, if the programs are able to connect to the GPS then the setup is just fine and the proble might be a compatibility issue with the Garmin program
Also note that the available COM ports will change from model to model, in some cases, COM 4 will be free while other phones may already have assigned COM 4 to a hardware device or OS resource such as Bluetooth for example and the used COM ports cannot be freed this is why it is unlikely that your issue is related to having the GPS on COM 6,7
good info to kn00w

WM6.5 Bluetooth problem thread

I opened this thread to sign here all the BT problems found on our BA using WM6.5
I'm using Radio 1.13 on WM6.5 21198. I can pair a Qstarz 51channel GPS antenna correctly, but after the pairing the device remains disconnected. After checking the Serial Port box in the device settings i'm able to tap on 'Connect', but then the BA always report 'Unable to connect, connection failed or password wrong'.
I tried with Broadcomm stack b3900 but i get an error on startup about 'Storage' file being deleted or something else.
I tried with Helmi BT stack b3400 and it works: i can pair and connect. However connection seems to be unstable and after a few i get the device disconnected automatically, i don't have even the time to set up correctly Navigon Navigator. After a SR sometimes i get 'Unable to turn on bt cous of lack of memory, try to sr... blablabla'. Sometimes i have to HR to leave this error message.
better experiences?
I never use the CONNECT in the BT Settings to connect to my Holux GPSlim236. I just Add New Device... then set the COM Port to port #6, then go to Start/Settings/Connections/External GPS ... Under the Programs tab (Select NONE), under Hardware tab (Select the COM Port you set on BT, in my case COM Port 6), on the Access tab (Mark Manage GPS Automaticaly. Then I go open whatever GPS Software I'm going to use, and it usually connects to the GPS Reciever automatically. [edit] If it doesn't connect, then I go to the settings of the GPS Software and I tell it what my GPS Reciever COM Port is. I usually have to do that with Live Search and iGO8(all though iGO8 has a search for GPS that always finds it too)[end edit] However, from the best of my memory, I have never seen my GPS listed as CONNECTED. So again, I don't think you need to try to Connect on the BT Settings page. Give it a try, hope this helps.
Another option is to contact Qstarz support and ask them how to properly set up your GPS on WM6+. They should be able to walk you through.
[Edit:] I will test tonight if I get that error message by trying to use the CONNECT funtion on BT Settings. Also, I'll see if when the BT GPS Receiver is connected, if it shows on BT Settings as CONNECTED. I'll post back my findings as an EDIT to this post.[End Edit]
<Edit> I've done some further testing as promised. Here is my finding:
*When the BTGPS Reveiver is connected to the phone, there is no indication on the BT Settings as that it is "Connected", however it is, as Live Search, Pharos, iGO8 and Google find it without any troubles.
*I tried to highlight the GPS Receiver and tap on CONNECT, but the softkey is greyed out(not available).
*I tried tap n hold over the Receiver with the same results, connect is not available.
I have not noticed any problems with Blue tooth on build 21198.
Same problem to me with Jentro BT8.
Now trying HELMI_BA_BTstack_Build 3400.CAB.
Hope this one works.

Read markanthonypr's and frafor's posts above. Those are the only two solutions found so far. I am currently trying out markanthony's solution and so far it seems to work. I'll have to do some further testing.
I've been able to connect my GPS using helmi's b3400 stack, the connection is far stable but i have to set up the GPS ports fast, then open Navigon Navigator because otherwise the GPS enters standby mode and it looses the connection. However in these days i'll try the new build
markanthonypr: i too use 'add new device', but after the wizard procedure the GPS is listed under 'Disconnected devices' so then i have to check 'Serial port' service and tap 'connect'. Here i get the error message.

Have you tried w/o checking the Serial Port? I don't check the serial port. I just tried what you've stated, and got the same error you are talking about. But like I said, It connects to BT GPS Receiver w/o the Serial.

Well mark, you were right on the money with your suggestion. It seems that 6.5 controls external gps devices from within that option in the settings rather than the BT console. As far as the BT, it seems that it isn't a matter of drivers after all, but rather how 6.5 is handling them. Stick with the original drivers, I think that there are a few surprises in stock with the other BT stacks (Helmi's and broadcomm's)
Also, if I could recommend you Destinator 7, it seems to do just fine. I haven't tried Tomtom 6 or iGo 6 (all of which I used to use), but this one is very lightweight and the maps are not ridiculously big either.
Good to see you around buddy!!

Oh, I'm happy with iGO8 and the sexy female voice I have LOL and LiveSearch works awesome as well. They just updated again few weeks ago. Only thing I don't like about LiveSearch is it only saves 128MB on Storage Card. Everything over that gets downloaded on the spot and with the slow G connection of BA's, it can become a pain at times. But iGO8 Maps cover PR very well However, just to be nice, I'll try destinator. If you recomend it and Tony Cooks it, I'll eat it LOL
Umm btw, let me scoot to work... Later aligators
EDIT: Geez, I always have a second thought after pressing that darn Post Reply. I installed NF, its the same I had. Haven't seen any noticeable difference. A little higher build... Poofff Gone!

psShutXP is a bit annoying. I use this cab to soft reset & power off which is quite ideal for WM6.5 start menu I have repacked the cab files.
I've got the same problem and I think this is a problem GPS with MTK chipset. I've try 2 diferent GPS (qstarz and pentagram ) with MTK chipset and bouth work correctly only with WM2003 or on WM 5/6 from helmi with Helmi BT Stack 1,7.
With many ROMs GPS connect corectly and work to soft reset. After reset GPS connect for 1-2 sek and disconnect. It doesnt mater setting in GPS devices so i thing this is problem with receving BT data in our devices.
Also I try GPS from nokia LW-3 (or something like this) with sirfstar III and it connect without problem with diferent ROMS
I have a different problem since upgrading to Xplode's WM6.5 v21202...
I have working connections (not all at the same time) to three BT devices; Qstarz 51 ch gps, my old Tomtom BT gps, and the Stowaway (Think Outside) BT keyboard. All exhibit the same problem:
After a few minutes the connection seems to go and the device loses communication. It will then reconnect and continue fine for a while then same loss as before. This is particularly annoying when I'm using Tomtom to navigate!
I have not set up a serial connection for the Tomtom gps but did so for the Qstarz and keyboard. they all have the same comms loss.
I also have another BA running WM6.1 and this is fine with the devices...
Any suggestions please?
Thanks

Try a different BT stack. Some people have reported improvement in certain areas of functionality. However, everything comes at a price... the same people have reported that the range stinks. You will not be able to get much further than a couple of feet from your BA. Hope this helps...
