Suggestions for possible Apps for the Developers out there - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Themes and Apps

Hey guys, so I have been using my tp2 for a couple months now and I have noticed some things that could have some kind of App development. I have no idea where to begin with Developing apps and all of that tech stuff, so I'll put my ideas out there. If these things do exist please inform me, thanks
1. Customization of the Mute Key on the back - Personally I have never once touched this button because I dont use the speakerphone that often. My dad on the other hand uses his speakerphone many times throughout the day, but he has still no need for the mute button. Which leads to my ideas of being able to customize it for a push and/or push and hold functionality.
2. A keyboard that is just a D-pad. I tried the "G-pad" app which is supposed to enable to g-sensor to be used for scrolling, but I haven't been able to figure out how to use it properly. I also tried the ZoomAdds scrolling with the Zoom Bar, this is alright, however it doesn't always work for some reason.
3. Im not sure if this one is an app, or just a functionality of the Energy Rom, but i downloaded some apps from the Marketplace and the majority of them dont sort out into the folders in the Energy rom (such as Games, Tools, etc.) Is there an app for this or you can control it from the the settings in the energy rom or something? I didnt install the energy rom on my phone, which is why I know like nothing about it.

I use Keyboard controller for your #1 problem there. I hold my mute button to toggle Wifi on and off.

You can also use rory's suggestion for problem #2 if you want...just map a directional arrow to a long-press of each of the 4 front hardware buttons, in whichever arrangement feels best for you (up/left/right/down, left/up/down/right, whatever)

Definitely. I also have mapped my 4 front buttons to various things...
double press back arrow = CleanRAM
triple press back arrow = Resco File Explorer
long press back arrow = YoMoMedia
triple press home = rotate screen
long press home = iGO8

Im just curious, what is the timeout on the double and triple presses? Like what if i was in a list and i had down set to a single press of the home key, and i pressed it a couple times, and I activated the double press function?

It's pretty reasonable. I was scared of the same thing, but it has never done something I didn't want it to do.

Thanks a lot

Start button without using Stylus?

I'm probably missing something obvious but on my XDA Mini S I don't appear to be able to press the "start" button on the today screen via a hard button (used to be centre button on my old XDAIIs) without having to get the stylus out.
I'm sure we're both missing something, 'cus I concur.
However, if you find yourself desperate you can install my program VJKeypress (on my website) and use the command line 91 to pop the start menu. Make a shortcut and assign it to a hardware key.
V
i just slide the keyboard out a bit about .75cm and the start key on the keyboard is exposed, press it and VOILA!! hahaha, yah i thought the keyboard wouldn't work unless its out all the way but it does

If God wanted me to pull the stylus out everytime, he wouldn't have given me fingers! also anything to hand (as long as gentle) ie a real pen (nib withdrawn or the ink might mark the screen), screwdriver, key etc.
Also screen protector so you dont damage anything
I made this for using on my i-mate k-jam.
After installation you can use left software key to Start
Why do you want to do this easy thing in such a complex way? Just open Settings, click Buttons and assign <Start Menu> to any of your hardware buttons. I have configured Button 1 to open start menu (it's messaging bu default) and Button 2 for <OK/Close> (that button is IE by default).

Yup, me too.
By far the simplest solution.
I did try installing VITO ButtonMapper so I could have multiple apps mapped to the buttons but it has screwed up my 'soft buttons'.
DON'T USE IT, or Battery Pack Pro for that matter as it screwed up the whole PDA.

i had the same problems with vito buttonmapper. toggling buttonmapper on and off a few times seemed to fix it. not very good i know but it works perfectly now.
I used to set the Comm button to act as the start button. Don't do that anymore these days because i needed the quick button to the Comm manager. Thank god for fingers
I still bind the memo/speech button on the right to the OK/Close button at the top right button. Found it easier to use when typing the the keyboard or in normal mode.
All well least it wasn't me being dim! thanks for all the suggestions but just don't have a spare button to remap.
You'd think that they would have bound the Today screen "Start" function to a press of the directional button as it doesn't do anything else when on the today screen(as it was on the Blue Angel), but maybe that's just too logical!
assigning START menu to a button doesn't work when u have tomtom running. The menu pops up and just disappears again. It works in most of other apps though.
Got it!!!!
Just discovered that holding down the left soft key for about 1 second(rather than just tapping it to open calendar) opens the Start menu.
This is the feature of Smartskey
But I don't have smartskey installed so this must be a default function

Tried it here on my 2.24 ROM and it does not work. I press and hold for a second, also tried other varying lengths of time, and sure enough I always get the app the left soft button has been assigned.
Bizarre, works fine on mine - 2.21.4.1 Rom, 2.07 Radio UK XDA Mini S
Only apps I have installed are SPBBackup, Resco Explorer trial (expired) and TT5
Maybe a feature of the O2 UK Ext Rom?!?

change JogWheel behavior

Hello,
Just got my TyTn and got a question.
If i got a long email (about 34k just plane text) this is a lot of text.
With my tytn and the jogwheel it is possible to scroll down a page (or scroll up a page of course)
I was wondering, is there a way to make this shorter, so that the jogwheel doesnt schroll a complete page, but a half a page or maybe just 3 lines.
When i read a complete page the backight of my tytn turns dark.
Reminder: i do not want to change the settings in backlight! this is exactly the way i want it, but when i scroll more often the backlight stay on.
Please help
I hope it is possible.
Paul
Anyone have any solution to this?
It's bothering me too.
Thanks
Not only that problam bothering me...after installing the aebutton plus now my ok (Side One) button doesnt bring down the start menu any more and sometimes my green dialar button doesnt work too....does....i have tried uninstalling the aebutton plus...but stll im facing the probs...does there have anyway to retrive it to its default behaviour without hard reseting....i tried the button menu from setting but seems this button is not listed there...

Been playing around with my new TyTn also. I'm about to install all the software I had on my Wizard, when I was using my Wizard, Tweaks2k2 had an option for smooth scrolling, I'll see if it will change anything.

Make sure you turn off the volume adjustments that are assigned by default to Button #4075. After doing this my buttons function normally allowing me to call the start menu from the side button and the volume calls are eliminated.

I use the latest AEBPlus. If you use the add button function you can add the OK buttons and retain the start menu actuation via the side OK button while making those buttons actually close applications.

Hmmm, strange. i can't seem to find that option under options. We are talking about options in AEBplus right? Only thing that says volume on it is "restore volume slider". Is this the one I should uncheck all items?
Thanks for helping out dude.

That's the correct name. I was coming from my memory. There are three options in there make sure none are checked.
Thanks for helping out aadadams. Still having problems though. After a while the windows button won't open start menu and neither will ok button on the side of Tytn. Too bad, I really liked the function to be able to really close programs with hardware ok button.
Not entirely related but similar, I was wondering whether it is possible to get the scroll wheel to scroll quickly through the contacts list using the 'big letter' lookup? I know of a couple of people who say the phone has randomly done this for them but they can't figure out how.

I do not have a problem with the side button. When pressed while on the today screen it launches the start menu. How are your buttons mapped? Have you assigned multiple functions to these buttons that fail over time?

Nope, only thing I've done is add button and pressed ok hardware button. Then I mapped it to close active program or whatever the term is.
It shows up as button 4075 I think.
Wierd, I did basically the same thing with that button but I remapped several others to extend their fuunctionality. I have never had that happed. My next question is what other apps are you running especially immature apps that may cause the conflict.
Hmm, not running that much else. Wisbar advance and pocketbreeze. That's about it.
I do not use Wisbar apps and sine it does make changes to native start and ok functions it could be the problem. Run without it for day or so and see what happens.
With only wisbar and no aeb+ everything has been ok, will uninstall wisbar and try only aeb instead.

Want to remap hardware buttons freely...how ? (and some other tweaking-requests)

Does anyone know a registry hack yet for making it possible to remap ALL hardware buttons (or at least the OK button below the jog-wheel, cause this seems to be hard-coded to the Windows-menu) !?
Preferably a reg-hack that (re)enables this options in the regular \Settings\Buttons tab...
Another problem i want to fix (apart from the ROM being immature) is the fact that i have to go all the way into the Bluetooth-settings on the CommManager screen to connect my Jabra 620s in stereo/audio-mode, which is quite anoying and timeconsuming...
Some other strange thing is that when i want use Voicecommand (while playing audio) to either call someone or speak a command to WMP, this will only work when i use VC-assigned button on the device, and NOT with the answer/end button on my headset (wich should be working like the VC-button on device).
Anyone able to help me here ?
PS: i'm quite experienced WM user dating back to the Wyvern/PalmsizePC CE 2.12 devices...but i just can't seem to find my way around these huge registries in todays devices anymore... guess i'm getting old...
Anyone please ...?
I would like to know too. Style-wise, there are a lot of things HTC got wrong with the Trinity. In fact, I found the HTC Wizard better designed.
Damn thing needs IE, Messaging, Comm Manager buttons and a Volume slide but instead it has 2 OK buttons and a jog/dial which I rarely use.
Not to mention how buggy the release ROM is, what with huge delays between standby mode and MiniSD cards requiring re-insertion to work properly.
P.S. It would be nice to be able to change the functionality of the jog/dial wheel to volume control.
Yup - this is driving me nuts too.
I have 7 hardware buttons (inc the power button) on the trinity and I can only map 3 of them from Settings.
It's a real handicap (& Voice Command is conflicting with the voice dial button - or at least that's what I think is happening with my repeated failed installations).
Some wisdom from the forum would be almost as appreciated as a fix
Thanks,
M1

I got my Trinity last friday and am using a 2Gb MiniSD card and so far no problems with it. I feel no real delay when coming out of standby mode and no problem at all with the MiniSD card, maybe you got a early version of the ROM that contained this particular problems.
I do agree with you with the OK buttons, but i also understand the way they were designed, the button close to the jog wheel is to be used together with the jog wheel so that you can single handedly use the machine.
Lets see if someone suggests a good 3rd party tool to remap the buttons and then everybody is happy ;-)

I am able to get VC to work with call/answer button when using my Motorola headsets H300 and HS805. The phone needs to be out of standby mode ie screen needs to be on. I can't seem to get it to work with my R35 I.tech stereo wireless headset. I guess this could mean compatibility issues between headsets? Does the call/answer button work if you are not listening to music?

Yes...you're right...it does work when the screen of my trinity is on. But offcourse when listening to music the screen is gonna be off...
The button on the headset does activate voicecommand when device is on (ie screen on) and no music is playing. But i'd rather have it understand my commands like "what track is this" while music plays (without having to take out the phone of my pocket).
As for the button-mapping: i'm familiar with the buttonmappers out there, but another application on my trinity is just not what i need... Is there really no way to get to this functionality through the registry ? I've searched quite a chunk of the registry but gave up; i just can't find it...

Precisely: one handed operation... That's what i want, so i want the button next to the jogdial to be the ALT+TAB function (which is available through Spb PocketPlus)...so i want to be able to map this to whatever button i like, not just the 2 options HTC gave me... (i don't count press'n hold as an extra button).
I think it's quite ridiculous to have TWO buttons activating the startmenu, and have them hardcoded to that. What's the point in 2 buttons doing the same thing ?
Being able to change the 'Windows' button woukld also be a fine sollution...

Just tried, it works (AE Button Plus -> File -> Add button)
But i found a little bug, after i used it to swap Right Softkey and Start Menu Button, Start Menu Button works fine (changed to be Right Softkey) but for Right Softkey, no matter how i press it, start menu will not be shown !!!
Because, after i press Right Softkey, Start Menu Button event is triggered, but Start Menu Button is set to be Right Softkey by AE Button Plus, so at the end pressing Right Softkey will be regarded as pressing REAL Right Softkey rather than Start Menu.
The most strange thing is that such bug will not happen when pressing pressing Start Menu Button =.="
Any idea ? How to solve it ?

Hi guys,

Any suggestion how to reassign the startmenue button to call a specific application?

AEButton Plus maps all but the standby button...
... on my Wizard. Well, it doesn't touch the soft-reset, the camera gets funky when I try to map it, and I can't seem to move the vibrate function off the hold "Comm Manger" Key. Given I've got 50 different hardware button options, (or 37 added if I leave all the default functioning in place) with this nifty shareware (basically fully functional if you want to use it free forever), who cares about the dumb camera button (not in the count above).
My biggest problem is remebering where I mapped it all. My second is making decisions about how to map them.... :|| (that's a repeat sign in music-talk)
You gotta try it. I'd be curious to find out how it works on your hardware.

[APP] AE Button Plus to reassign EVERY physical button

Hello everyone, I'm sure many people will be interested to know that AE Button Plus is working perfectly with LEO and support english, french (which I use), spanish, deutsch and ten other languages. BTW, this is my first post, so every comments are welcome
The HD2 may be a touch device, it still has 7 buttons and I use them for variaty of functions, including switching on/off BLUETOOTH, WIFI or TORCH. You can even assign any button to run an application. The program is VERY stable and VERY convenient.
This exceptional app has the ability to reassign function to (almost) every physical button of your device, including the volume button. Moreover, it has the ability to assign different functions whether you press the button ONCE, TWICE or LONG PRESS. It very simple to use and work wonderfully with my HTC HD2 (as wall as many other Windows Mobile Device). I've used it for more than a week and I can't report any bug, even though I installed many other apps, tweak and so on.
I'm using the evaluation version (you have pay 7.99$) by the fact that it shows a splash screen when device starts up. But you can believe I will pay the damn Russian guy who created the app, many even donate more!!!
I wanted to share my experience with using this app, since it's not very known in this (great) HD2 forum. Also, I want to show you the way I've been remapping the buttons, to show how useful it can get. Feel free to comment!!! Once you install the program, softreset and assign the AEBPlus to a shortcut and you're ready to rock! By the way, the icon is quite ugly, but that's just a minor issue .
THIS IS THE WAY I REMAPPED HD2 BUTTONS (in brackets, the way AEPlus "calls" the button)
Volume up.
Single press: volume up
Long press Backlight up
Volume down.
Single press: volume down
Long press Backlight down
Hang up (green phone button)
Single press: switch vibration mode on/off (and shut down the volume)
Double press: switch torch on/off (run application "TorchButton v2.3")
Home button (button #00ED), added manually
Single press: unchanged, impossible to remap ??
Double press: switch bluetooth on/off (impossible to make it different than the "Home button"...)
Long press: impossible to remap ??
Windows button (windows key)
Single press: ok/close (close the window, but not the program still runs)
Double press: windows file explorer (you can choose to run another explorer, for example Total Commander)
Long press: close active application ("really" close the application)
Return button (also button #00ED, added manually, see ISSUE below)
Single press: unchanged (actually I chose no action, but the original function remains)
Double press: switch bluetooth on/off
Long press: switch wifi on/off
Power button (red phone button)
Single press: unchanged (shuts down backlight)
Double press: unchanged
Long press: unchanged (actually, I use it with "Touch X LEO Power 12 icons actionscreen v1.1")
KNOWN ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS
- Absolutely no bug !
- Bluetooth. The function included with this program doesn't work (apparently because HD2 uses Widcomm bluetooth, unlike its predecessors). To solve this, I simply assign the desired button with the application "ToggleBTh.exe" (credit to Dextrosan http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=587493). I copied the file to the folder "Program Files" and created a shortcut in the "windows/start menu/programs" to be able to make it appear in the program list.
- Backlight level. To adjust the backlight, you have to access the settings of the program. Click options -> backlight settings (scroll down !). There you can adjust the darkest level you wish (0 = minimum backlight) and the brightest level (10 = 100% = maximum backlight , less if you want to save battery life) and backlight step (2 = 20% is fine with me). Beware, when you assign a button with function backlight level, you have to choose in the subsequent menu if you want "backlight down", "backlight up" or even "backlight level" 0, 2 (= 20%), 4 (= 40%) and so on.
- Manually add Home button. Home button is not listed in the program, so you have to add it manually. Choose "File -> Add button" and follow instructions. Actually, there's a trick... If you press the Home button, it will close the window and go back to your home page. You'll have to go back in the program using the task manager.
- Home and Return button cannot be remapped individual. For some reason, when you manually add Home button, it's called #00ED and when you assign actions, these actions also work with the Return button... Actually, these actions even work BETTER on Return button than Home button. Single press and Long press actions will not work with Home button, but they work with Return button. Weird, huh? Even if you manually add Home button (then called #405C) and assign actions for the button, it won't work at all, and the Return will still execute actions listed with the button #00ED. All in all, it's a minor issue. Just remember that I can't remap single or long press for teh Home Button.
EDIT: Dec, 20 I also use the function "control volume directly" so that the volume buttons control SYSTEM volume directly and not the ring volume. Also, this nice function disable the ugly pop-up volume window that appears and have the annoying tendency to change ring volume first !!! This function is located in the menu "Options -> Other options -> Control volume directly". You can check or uncheck it.
That all folks, hope this little work will be useful for many.
Much help is appreciated to try to solve the Home/Return button issue.

Of course, as long as you find an exe which does that automatically whenever invoked. You can do pretty much anything as long as you can associate it with a specific utility. I use the program with my ipaq 210 and am very pleased with it, with a resistive screen it's even more useful.
Now, if only I wasn't dead-dumb enough to let slip from my hands this leo for 430EU on ebay... who knows how long will I have to wait to find another one at that price.

ok ive can boot the camera app but cant take picture, any ideas
I'm using this program also for a while.
I'm used to use the power/hangup red button to go back to the today screen but can't find a way to get that working.
It takes me a while to figure out the working posibilities but it's useful anyway.
Great post! Thanks for sharing with us.

I copied the file to the folder "Program Files" and created a shortcut in the "windows/start menu/programs" to be able to make it appear in the program list.

ok. so we have something special on our leos.
- htc sense.
- green button - send key.
- red button - end key.
- home button. this key is stucked with htc sense.
- back button.
1. green button.
i can do any thing with this key. but i leave long press unchanged beacause my vangrieg_incall_lock_ita had added long_send.lnk that link to phone on my \windows and i don't want to interfere into it. now long press on send key = phone. this is a vital function, right? so let it be.
2. red button.
i can't do any thing, but "Touch X LEO Power 12 icons actionscreen" can.
so for me end key has single press as normal and long press by "Touch X LEO Power 12 icons actionscreen". that is more than enough. power off is a vital function also.
3. home button.
as said, this key is stucked with htc sense. so you can not change single press anyway. you can do somethings with double, triple and even long press but firstly it takes you to home screen then do your commands. for long press see next item.
4. back button.
this is exactly "ok key" on aebutton. you even don't need to add it manually. you can do everything with this key except long press. long press works only when you are on a certain program interface. this does not work when you are on htc sence interface. to get this long press work on anything, anywhere and anytime you have to assign the same action you want to do to HOME KEY LONG PRESS. and voilà !!! this works 4u.
Thanks for your appreciation of my thread.
Still, If you are really "hardcore hardware fan" you can use AEBPlus to assign even the double tap and triple tap of the keys
To oainot. About the bluetooth toggle, If find it quicker and simpler, to double tap on one button, turn on my headphones and get going out in the snow. I use it literally everytime If get out of my apartment. Just think: would you prefer to switch the light off your apartment with a long-click (+ click in a menu) or with a simple double-click? Just a matter of taste I guess. The best is to have to choice!
To satoo. Here's my configuration file. I should tell you that my system is in french. I managed to put "english" as language in the program, but you can still get some french word (calculatrice = calculator i think; Explorateur de fichiers = file explorer; ). See attached file.
Merry Christmas!

I am in entire agreement with you.
one key like hold red key ,we can switcher wifi on/off, bt on/off.
So,in an identical manner,
I set one key (ex:hold vol up) to active phoneweaver ,with which i set some usefull profiles :
mute mode: switch vibration mode
day mode: loudly volume
night mode: max or min backlight level as you like
.......
each mode we can define (backlight level, vol lvl, differents rings, wifi on/off,bt on off)
here is phoneweaver 2.0 with XXXX,sorry for my english

i'm afraid it is not possible.
single press of red key may controled by basic input output system, not the operating system (windows mobile), not the htc sense or not any other resident program.
may be this should be that for power on the phone by single press while operating system is still not running.
may be someone could hack the key someway. i dunno. if aebutton had a button assume called "power key", it could be possible to try.
Assign Softkeys Functions
I changed the setting to reassign functions of softkeys. AE Button shows the setting properly, but it does not work.
any suggestion?
thanks

I want to remap left softkey (single click) to HTC Message.
But when I do it the left softkey is still "phone" and the caption is not changed!

Yes, I noticed that the left softkey cannot be remapped by AEB. You'll have to use the newer BsBTweak which works just fine with the left softkey. Find it here

this feature is for devices with physical soft keys. Leo doesn't have them. search the forums for softkey remapper (Today and/or Manila).

Android is great BUT could be improved at least...

As far as physical goes...Android has too many buttons. IMO you only need:
Button 1
Press Once = Sleep
Press Twice = Wake
Long Press = Shutdown/Turn On
Button 2
Press Once = Desktop
Press Twice = AppDrawer
Long Press = Open/Close Dockbar (scrollable dock for heavily used apps such as phone, messaging, music, etc that doesnt take up screen space.)
Button 3
Volume up/down
and possibly a dedicated CAPACITIVE scrolling/zooming button for fast scanning thru the app drawer and/or desktops and/or scrolling/zooming in web browsers.
(this way u can have larger widgets on ur desktops because u have a dedicated app drawer button and not one that takes up space on ur desktop. plus ur not limited to just 7 desktops like u get with HTC preview screens or launcherpro, etc because it would be easy to scroll thru 20 desktops with the dedicated capacitive scroll)
Ok. So if u put the sleep/wake on top of the phone, volume button on the left side, your left with just one button like the iphone and maybe my proposed idea of the capacitive scrolling button (thats if u like that idea).
this would be different from the iphone even though the iphone has one button because its functions are different. the iphone button does BACK+LONG PRESS=HOME. this would do a DESKTOP/APPDRAWER+LONG PRESS= DOCKBAR.
so it has 3 functions instead of 2. add in the capacitive scrolling and u have a simple easy to use device without redundant buttons thats still different from
apples iphone.
-no need for back button. browsers and apps can provide soft buttons in its user interface.
-no need for search button. widgets and apps can be used for this on ur desktop
-no need for settings button. again, widgets and apps can be used on ur desktops. put ur desktops to use!
great if u understood what i said. sorry for the rant if u didnt. just an idea and my 2cents.
.
Get an iphone if you want less buttons.
I personally love the back, home and menu buttons, and find them very very useful.
Errr... my three most frequent used buttons are: back, home and menu and you want to remove 2 of them. Yeah, great idea ;-)

I agree, the last iphone I used pissed me off hard not having a physical back button....
I agree. back and home are essential! relying too much on soft buttons is silly. Also if you really dont like the OS because of the number of hard buttons then I think you are a little confused.
The hard buttons are usually decided by the manufacturer arent they? maybe your rant should be directed at htc and not android? I could be wrong.

LOL...I'm short of buttons. Idea = Long press Menu-> contacts and Long press Back->screen off or Camera, Trackball press -> receive/pickup call at lockscreen.
search button: yep, that button is needless, I never use it.
All other buttons are essential.
The home button and back button are very important. The back button isn't just for going one page in a browser back. Couldn't live with it. The menu button is very important, too, because it's a dedicated button which is the same in EVERY app, so you always know how to find the settings.
And then, volume and power button, you can't remove them.
PS: Two times button hitting to execute a command is silly.

This is where the Galaxy S shines: the menu button acts as both the menu and search buttons.
I think the search button is indispensable. When I want to find any contact or document in my phone, any thing in google it gets me there in one step.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Lol, this dude is tripping. Giving up my 4 beautiful and all useful buttons. In instead lose screen estate cause every app is gonna make the SAME thing at the bottom as the buttons?
Lol. GTFO
You may have heard of this semi-obscure device that is basically what you are looking for. It is called the "iPhone", if you look it up on the interwebs you may be able to find something about it.
less buttons? seriously? im sorry to hear you cannot afford an iphone if you want it that bad.
I'd agree as well that some physical buttons are very useful to avoid wasting screen real estate with buttons. That said, the HTC Hero has 6 buttons (call, hang up, menu, home, back and search) which is probably a bit OTT as call and hang up are replicated on-screen all the time. But buttons like home, back and menu are essential, as others have said.
The key is that if *all* Android hardware has the same core set of buttons, then developers can rely on those buttons being there and use them intelligently. All too often you see programs which have clearly been ported over from another system without any effort having been made to adapt them to the Android system. Not only do these waste space, but they also feel counter-intuitive to an Android user because they use a different UI model. My particular pet-peeve is apps which forget to take control of the volume rocker for their audio - that makes me accidentally adjust my ringtone volume (which is normally silent!) instead of the app's volume
Umm, sorry for the rant...

Like the pause button on angry birds. Have they realised androids have a button called menu?
I love the 4/5 physical buttons on android, even if you don't use the search button a lot at first, you can always assign that button to something you want.
I wish I had 1 more button...a dedicated forward button...I get a little jumpy with my back button.
Less is not always more. Less is sometimes just less(i.e. iPhone)

Yeah I know. My point is the button onscreen is a waste of space because it it replicated by a hardware button.
The "search" button is more of a Google thing. Its a android phone (google) so they want a search option of there database to be easily accessed.
