Internal memory? - Legend General

I just got my htc legend and decided to install a few apps on it. After that it felt a lil laggy so i decided to check my available memory left, strangely it said i only had 85mb left...
i decided to test this by uninstalling every app i installed and my internal memory was still only 150mbish. So if i am correct my legend only came with 150mb memory???
I checked my app management and summed it all up and the numbers just dont add...?
I thought the legend had 512mb internal memory...?
anyone have a clue where the rest could be?
thx.

it has 512mb yes but that 512mb is also holding the Os and all the stuff that came with it so the usable space is much lower this is usually the case when you buy any device.
if you want more app space root the phone shift the apps to the sd card along with the caches

Well, simply rooting isn't going to magically open up the internal storage; that's why it's still listed as 1.1x GB after. The root just came out this morning; just like us patient people gave the devs to root, give them time to fiddle with the storage. They'll probably figure it out soon enough.
Fortunately the storage is still a crapload. I've gone from what... 1.16GB? stock to 1.1GB, and I don't see myself using the rest of it at all.
Yup, I don't even think I need all that space. Right now I have 888MB free, and that is with ALL my apps installed on phone memory, as I prefer not moving to SD Card...
I just wanted to ask, does moving to SD Card do anything other than free up space of the phone memory? If it does make stuff run faster etc, then only I see a reason to move apps to sd card..
Freeing up space is the only real benefit for Androids native apps2sd...
Apps2ext on the other hand, was really nice to have if you like trying out different roms.

On the G1 they where able to re-allocate memory from the GPU to the CPU to increase the speed of the G1 at the cost of 3D games. Believe Cyanogen did this, Yes, 1.x gigs is plenty BUT, what if the rest of the "4 gigs" could be focused on the GPU side of things to increase FPS? hehe Counter Strike on the G2..rofl Maybe using the other space for a full linux distro? a dual boot?
Dual Boot could be very nice, yes..
That actually sounds quite viable.

[Q] European HD2 NANDroid = lost cause?

Truly curious here.
I flashed one of the new NAND Android builds just as soon as they came out, riding the wave of jubilation and unbridled enthusiasm over ditching Windows Mobile. But I live in Germany, meaning my HD2 contains half of the internal storage of its American counterparts.
After flashing a NAND Android Rom, the phone is left with a paltry 100 MB or so of free space. When it comes to installing apps, some of them CANNOT be prevented from finding their way to the internal memory, try as you might to keep them off.
No matter what I tried, I found my internal memory depleted, immediately, with a good number of apps still to install, but no room left to install them.
Are Europeans left simply hanging in the breeze on this one?
All commentary appreciated. Enjoy your New Years celebrations.

More than 50% of the app I have cannot be moved to SD card, even with APP2SD.
Cyanogen mod leaves 200mo.

The only hope is that someone will find a way to use a second ext2/ext3 partition in sd card as internal memory. It has been done in normal android phones, so i think it can be done to HD2 nand android.

This suggestion ignores what was stated clearly in my initial post - that certain apps CANNOT be prevented from installing to the internal memory, regardless of 3rd party apps like app2sd.
install move2sd enabled (root only) with this you can FORCE sd install for all apps
a few months ago a bunch of kernals supported ext partitions. this is make a comeback. You will partition your sdcard with lets say 1gb ext partition and the rest will be fat. With ext partitions all app installs will work. its the same method currently employed on all low end android devices, like the htc g1.
now, nand was just released yesterday. give the devs some time, look at the they have accomplished so far. they will fix this issue along with curing cancer next week

No way to say for sure. I would suggest reinstalling. But, as another poster said, the NAND Cyanogen mod ROM out right now leaves 200 MB after install, which might be just enough to squeak by for the time being. It's what I'm going with, anyway.

untill you get 1 text or mms to many and it says, low memory.
even if you have just about managed to squeez it all on at the moment, as you start using the apps and caches are created and messages are sent to and fro you will soon run outta the last 20mb too.
plus you never know when you might want to install a new app.

Loooooooooool, exactly the same for me, always laughing at those who were forced to uninstall apps from their nand cause lake of memory and the no possibility to install them on sdcard, and for now, I'm about to live their situation... that's why I don't want yet to pass to a nand Rom, will wait some times before, even if it's hard to resist ...
I always used to install all my apps to the nand memory (my 1024mb data.img of course !!) In order to keep as clean as possible my sdcard, indeed, all my data and apps files were stored in my data.img.
Hope devs would keep the possibility to extend the nand memory in a file as always... keep on it guys... who knows, it could.also help many others Android based phone...

move2sd is the solution.
Not completely, but much better than app2sd.
Possibly a lost cause to the Sense builds, but not these builds.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893637
It initially leaves a massive room in the internal storage and since it's Cyanogen Mod, go to settings>CyanogenMod Settings>Application Settings and tick Allow application moving.
This essentially force moves every application to the SD while programs like App2SD cannot move all apps.
Get it now.
I've installed more than 60 apps now with over 100 megs still left.

[Q] HTC EVO Shift Defective??

So I bought my HTC Shift 4G but i think it's Defective. I've called HTC, Sprint, and Bestbuy. The 3 companies say the Phone Has 2 GB Internal Memory(ROM). However my Phone only shows 432MB :
203 MB Apps
69. MB System
159.6 MB Free space
Could it be Defective or They just don't know what they saying.
Would u guys tell me if ur devices are showing the same ??
I bought this phone cuz the 2GB. I'd hate to return it and get the big EPIC!!
thanks!!
I got 431 for applications(internal storage)
I figure the rest is system reserved by the fellows at HTC. That is where the OS/kernel is located. Probably locked away/system mountable only, to prevent us from obtaining root. ( any of you fellows who know better can feel free to correct me.) Just based on knowledge of linux etc. Not much in depth on the droid
Sent from my Evo Shift 4G using XDA App
I'm pretty sure it does in fact have 2GB of internal memory, however it seems like a big chunk of that is taken up by the operating system and maybe some is reserved for system storage/app caches/etc. Not 100% sure but I think that's why.

Check here: http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=2946
It gives you the specs.
This is what I got from Root Explorer:
/app-cache - 4k used, 8.00MB free
/cache - 31.21MB used, 111.01MB free
/data - 351.02MB used, 80.70MB free
/dev - 12K used, 186.59 MB free
/devlog - 4.04MB used, 15.82MB free
/etc - 288.83MB used, 102.53MB free
/system - 288.83MB used, 102.53MB free
I'm not a dev so can't interpret it correctly but it does seem there's lots of memory here and there that could probably be partitioned to the /data folder for more app storage once perm root is achieved.
EDIT: I've removed lots of stock apps so your numbers will not match mine.
The first Shift that I picked up from Best Buy was indeed defective. Not because it wasn't showing the proper amount of memory, but because it locked up on me 5 times in the first hour that I had it. All I could do to get it to turn off is battery pull, and then when I put the battery back in i had a really tough time getting it to turn back on. They swapped it out for me, and my new one has been flawless.
i'm wondering (don't quote me on this) if the extra internal storage is hidden/locked by HTC so there will be room available when the new sense drops? i've heard it's a lot bigger than the current version with the stand-alone navigation/maps that it's going to bring with it.
Has anyone ripped one apart and checked all of the chips on board?
I would take it back to the store and exchange it.
Phone should have around 256mb for apps (With all the stock apps installed)

Do you think Xoom 1GB internal memory is enough?

I keep asking this question, how big is the space for apps?
But got no answer from anywhere.
Well, I searched and searched, found this:
http://xperiaandroid.com/motorola-xoom-specs-and-release-date.html
" ... Xoom is armed with dual core processors have speed of 1 GHz. In addition, Xoom also powered by a internal memory 1 GB, 32 GB internal storage capacity and can be enlarged by using the SD card. ..."
I think, that 1 GB is for app and the 32 GB is the "internal USB storage" kind.
Or is this the RAM?
Come on, why no one cannot give info about the 32 GB internal memory
A lot of people went to CES, MWC ... still no info

I believe the 1GB number is the amount of RAM the Xoom has. The 32GB number is the amount of storage space the Xoom has. These numbers are inline with most other tablets that are coming out or that are out.

There may be only 1GB of application storage space though. Android phones have always had a limited space for installing apps.
RAM is used for running apps
Internal storage is used to hold movies, music, etc..... in this case apps as well
as far as running out of space you should search threads on apps to SD

how about everytime we install an app it takes up a certain amount of space, then we know how much we have left. IF we had something like that it would be amazing. I think there is something like this included with the Xoom, but it's pure speculation at this point.

Why does it matter now? Google figured out how they wanted to install apps to the SD Card, you think they made that functionality so rigid that they can't install to the eMMC storage instead?
It's probably "up to 32gb"
Because some times, you just cannot control it.
There are apps that can only be installed in the internal memory.
It is just a simple question though, but it seems no one, not even those from popular news websites / blogs can answer this question. Although they have handled, fondled, played around the Xoom at CES / MWC *sigh*

Freeing Up Internal Memory Is Like...

...freeing up space on your HDD from 1995. We are juggling with megabytes, not gigabytes... has anyone ever noticed that?
That's because phones are very different from desktop computers...
The phone could do with more internal storage...

In working for years with computers I have to say hard drives are very volatile. If I got more than 5 years or so out of a consumer hard drive up until the past few years I considered it good. Its the only part of your computer (besides fans) that has consistently moving parts.
But its true I do feel like its 1995 again with all this juggling of free space. Its pretty annoying actually

I feel you bro, I got 62mb free on my internal memory, no more than 400mb free in my 8gb SD card and 2gb left on my 270gb HDD, so I definitely won't be using any link2sd thingies any soon, until I buy a new SD card, just because the damn phone nor the sdcard that comes with it doesn't come with any space for your stuff, due to the .android_secure folder occupying like 2gb and a half. It's pretty awkward, yet the phone is worth it.

What does that do exactly?
I'm having a constant battle with internal storage.
I only have a few apps on my internal storage having moved most with APP2SD or Titanium yet it keeps going down.
Flash is like 12MB. But if I move it with Titanium, it tells me it is not installed.
Same with Twitter, If i move it, it doesn't allow me to sign in.
I constantly have 40mb or less free and yet I've got like nothing installed on internal memory. I don't know what's taking up all the space, anyway I can see for definite?
Thanks.
I have storage problems too.
I have only 130Mb of apps on the internal storage, the rest in on my sd card and yet still I have only 78mb free. Any suggestions as to the cause of this?

I think he means moving apps from the data partition to the system partition (where your base rom is stored-the stuff that is still there when you wipe data/factory reset), thus freeing up space on your data partition, which is where apps you install normally are stored.
