[ROM] [05/28/2010] Tainted Vanilla - Build Your Own! - Droid Eris Android Development

-Tainted Vanilla ROM-
is an ongoing attempt at creating a vanilla android experience on the Eris. Since HTC hasn't given us a good way of getting rid of all of their Sense bits, all of our roms are "tainted" by it. Eventually, we'll have a way of getting rid of it all and this rom will be reborn as Pure Vanilla ROM.
I will always strive to remove as much of the HTC Sense components as I can without losing functionality, replacing them with Vanilla pieces whenever possible.
Hey all,
I've received several requests both public and private to continue work on Tainted Vanilla. I have been very pleased that so many of you have enjoyed it, and equally pleased that it has performed well for you and that you desire more. I am not the person to continue work on Tainted Vanilla. Honestly, I have lost interest now that we have some projects cranking out true vanilla roms. They're not perfect yet, but they'll get there. I realize that there are several features that Tainted Vanilla offers currently that the vanilla roms don't. The hybrid nature of TV makes it ideal for some of you. I am not part of that group. Here's the plan: if you want TV to continue, feel free to work on it. any one of you (or multiple) may continue working on this rom as their own. You have my blessing, I'll pass over the thread to you (is that possible?) and here's my final gift to you, tainted.vanilla.kitchen.tar.bz2 available in my folder on http://android.grdlock.net
Included is a rom kitchen credits dsixda http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246, a signing script (for creating updates), and a script I wrote which will take pretty much any sense rom and make it "Tainted Vanilla".
I wrote it for running within Ubuntu Linux, but any Linux distro should work. Make sure you have java installed and configured. The script assumes that you have unpacked everything inside /home/yourusername/android/.
Enjoy and good luck!
Hey all. I appreciate your support over the last few weeks. As stated in the introduction to my rom, the goal was to create the most vanilla-like experience for the Eris as possible while we were still forced to have any pieces of sense in our roms. Well, thanks to the work of several wonderful developers, it looks as though we're quite close to that goal.
Kaosfroyo - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685594
Senseless - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686870
Generic kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686797
Each of the above links will take you to partial work (both Kaosfroyo and Senseless have a bunch of missing features) but those devs have done an incredible job and I would like to support them now finding/reporting/fixing bugs.
You are free to continue using Tainted Vanilla as long as you like, but I encourage you all to help out the new pure vanilla efforts.
Thank you!
Props:
Ivan - Base ROM
Unknown - Creator of boot animation
Zanfur - kernel with OC support
jcase - always helps me when I have questions
testers - you all help make this work!
anyone I've forgotten, let me know
THANK YOU!!
Always remember to create a nandroid backup before flashing, I'm not responsible for broken phones. You do everything at your own risk.
Enjoy!

Features:
Removed:
*Most of SenseUI including:
Mail.apk (replaced with vanilla)
Mms.apk (replaced with vanilla)
Music.apk (replaced with vanilla)
Calculator.apk (replaced with vanilla)
Browser.apk (replaced with vanilla)
Added:
*Vanilla DeskClock (use this for alarms)
*Vanilla MMS
*Vanilla (droid) Email
*Vanilla Music
*Vanilla Contacts
*Vanilla Calculator
*Vanilla Browser
The following are installed by default but can be un-installed via the standard android application manager!
*Gmail.apk (use the vanilla mail program instead, it'll give you a unified inbox!)
*Launcher2 (AKA Nexus Launcher)
*Helix Launcher (My favorite Launcher by far!)
*Autokiller
*CorCAL (For exchange corporate calendar sync)
*Facebook
*Google Talk
*ASTRO File Manager
*Google Voice
*Home Switcher
*Google Maps
*Spare Parts (set animations to "fast" for an even faster-feeling rom!)
*Wired Tether
*Wireless Tether
*YouTube
Other:
*Add task killer tweak for speed
*Experimental support for apps2sd - ext2/ext3 only, *not* ext4 (please test and report back success/failure!)
*Zipalign all *.apk files to optimize RAM usage
*Changed boot animation
*Disabled OTA updates
*Changed default wallpaper
*Live wallpapers are back & maps navigation working
*HTC keyboard and vanilla both available (use htc for voice typing)
Which launcher should I use?
When you first boot (after setup), you'll be prompted to choose a launcher. You are given the following options:
*HelixLauncher - from the market. This one is my favorite! Has a toggle-able number of home screens, supports tilt rotation, and more!
*Home (Launcher) - very stable and FAST.
*Nexus Launcher (Launcher2) - fun 3d effects but has some issues on Eris.
Notable changes in 1.4:
Vanilla/HTC hybrid dialer - Thanks jadesdan!
Helix Launcher added - Thanks arctu
Autokiller - Thanks AndRS Studio
ASTRO File Manager - Thanks Metago
Google Voice - Thanks Google
*Many apps made un-installable via standard android package manager in case you don't want them!
*Speed tweaks!
Known issues with version 1.4:
*Some people experience Browser force closes under some conditions. Visit the market and browse around to fix it as a workaround for now. After doing so, no more FC's.
*Gallery will not work with opengl LWP patch found elsewhere (makes images transparent and kills performance)
*OOPS! I don't use corporate calendar so I didn't notice it force closes.
To fix, flash the file called "TV.1.4.CorpCALfix-update.zip" located in my folder on httpd://android.grdlock.net. No wipe needed. Sorry about this silly issue!

When tweaking overclock settings with SetCPU, don't check "set on boot" until you know you have stable settings. Start at 528MHz and move up to see where the sweet spot for your phone is. This can avoid getting your phone into an unbootable state if you set the frequency too high and have it set at boot time.
Further performance increase (possibly less stable), use:

Sure thing.
Only apply this update to sprint roms. Do a nandroid backup first. I only have tested it on Aloysius:

So if I am NOT on a sprint rom, I can't use this lockscreen right? Any way this can be made to work on the latest 2.1 rooted leak? I would flip. This rotary lock is cool. I liked the nexus one lock, but dismissing alarms didn't work and I use my alarm clock alot. Man If we can get the rotary lock to work on a verizon rom and dismiss alarms I would c*** in my pantalones...

I found a script here --> http://code.google.com/p/sensehero/downloads/list but I'm not sure how to run it
I tried plgging in the phone and running it but nothing happened.

Also, there's an open gl patch in the Aloysius tread that allowed V7 to run maps, galley and LWP's. Any chance that it would work on this?
My basic qeustion is, how would I get LWPs to work on here, aside from flashing or installing another launcher?

Sorry, but in order to use other lock screens apart from the normal HTC one, you have to be rooted to have write permission to /system/app/.

Look at post #5, I've actually already given a link to the update file you can flash on sprint roms (and those ported sprint roms like Aloysius2eris) to get the rotary lockscreen.

Your assumption is correct, if you want live wallpapers to work, you can install jcase's lwp update that's linked to all over the forums. There is also a opengl patch that enables more live wall papers to run (and not to die when the phone sleeps), but it *will* kill navigation.

hoban: I AM rooted, but not using a sprint ROM. I was wondering because you specified that this can only be used on a sprint ROM.

Yeah, that was what I experienced when I tried it before as well. I assume that the framework file that the update replaces references files that aren't in non-sprint roms but I've not bothered to dig in to find out. Anyhow, the update I posted is for sprint roms only. Thanks for testing and verifying though!

Downloading this one now, I'm kind of a Vanilla freak so to me, this looks like a nice ROM. I'll give some feedback later today.
Thanks for the work on this one.

I like it so far but it force closed twice during the initial setup menu.

Did you make sure to factory wipe and dalvik cache wipe before installing? I didn't have any force closes. Just make sure you click "always allow" when the autokiller superuser allow prompt appears.

I was playing with his port on my Hero and liked what I saw, figured I'd try it out on the Eris.
So far it seems to be working pretty well. Granted I've only been running it for a very short time so we'll see what happens
Just uploaded a new version that fixes the ADB at boot and should kill the superuser FCs as well.
Will be flashing to this over the weekend. Thanks for your hard work.

HTC Apps on CM6

I've had some problems getting HTC apps working in cm6 latest nightly.
I get my apks from DC froyo.
First I tried an easy install which failed.
Then I moved it to the system/app folder and chmod and chowned to make sure the permissions and owners were the same as stock.
Right now the HTC internet browser opens but force closes.
How can I get it working?
Aren't the HTC apps tied to the Sense framework? If so, I don't think it'll be possible to get them working on a non-sense ROM.
I could be completely wrong.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using XDA app.

No you are not completely wrong. You are completely correct. Sense is deeply integrated into Android. It's not like there are just some added libraries. The source code that compiles into the framework.jar and framework-res.apk, etc are directly modified by HTC. This means Sense is no mere skin. It is a complete integration into Android. Regardless, without this framework HTC apps will only run on Sense phones. Some can be ported over but it's a difficult process so most likely the apps you want will not be ported over. Out of curiosity though, which apps are you trying to use on CM6?
If you want Sense, go back to Sense.

Use DC.
Can't use HTC apps without Sense. Please check the FAQ in the future.
if you provide the applications you're trying to run, perhaps alternatives can be suggested for you.
I personally like the HTC Tip Calulator widget....
and the HTC Notes....
But you can't use them on adw.
I don't want an app shortcut, I want a widget.
I prefer AOSP thankyou very much.
I just like the option of having some apps that I got used to.
HTC_ime for example. The keyboard.
Even though I use swype.
The camera app which pwns the stock.
Got flashlight and car panel working.
FM radio and weather would be nice too.
There were some nice Widgets but the only one I miss is the clock.
Any porting tips?

4G and FM Radio is not working in CM6 yet.
this is listed in the CM6 OP.
i'm not sure what HTC browser your talking about. perhaps try installing Dolphin HD browser.
last nights CM6 build incorporated a new camera app and deathray (er...Flashlight app w/ widget). just get the nightly build and flash over what you have...i wipe 'cache' and 'dalvik cache' ...you loose no settings.
i use 'MyWeather' but then, i don't care for weather widgets. have you even looked on the android market for this? maybe try browsing from a computer on a site like www.appbrain.com
i use digital clock widget to provide my time date...many folks praise Beautiful Widgets.

- read the entire forum for the ROM you're playing with
- use the search function liberally. (both on xda and google)

Thanks for your post, but.
This isn't about anything specific, i simply want to know how to get apps ported, without the java source.
That said, I AM using dolphin, but I prefer the copy-paste that I can only find with HTC sense, I was hoping the browser on stock sense would help.
I've come across that thread, and use Swype without much issue, but having no trackball () makes me wish I had some arrow keys.. Not available in that thread.
Since my OP I have customized ADW and i'm quite pleased with it overall.
Now I just want to be able to use any app I wish. Regardless of alternatives!
Beautiful widgets is good, but has no analog clocks last I checked.
I do use it either way, but again, this isn't about anything specific.
I want to unlock apk's so they work anywhere. Any rom. Not just with HTC apps, but even the touchwiz apps!
Don't care about 4G, and i know that there are bugs being worked out with CM6 but i'm following it closely. On the 8/11 nightly build right now.
Finally, I read too much. I know a lot more than I put on..
Been "playing" with android roms since Dream (especially CM).
The problem which I have won't be solved by simply looking around for a version of the APK that works.
I want to know how they are being ported/unlocked .
If you can help, then thankyou very much!
Otherwise, I don't need your irrelevant tips. (No offense intended)

You either forgot to download and flash Gapps, or got the wrong one, or RomManager/Clockwork didn't flash it right. If you used are on nightly 11 or newer or RC2 or newer you will need the latest gapps. They were updated 03/07 (20110307).

While in recovery remember to wipe cache/dalvic and Fix Permissions (after flashing while still in AmonRA recovery go to "Other > Fix apk uid mismatches").

Firstly, Cyanogen himself knows this is a problem

The GPS in the Evo is the buggiest thing I have ever seen. Before 2.3, we were using binary blobs for the GPS driver which contains who-the-hell-knows-what from HTC to fix these things. Now we are using opensource code that is based on Qualcomm reference designs which is pretty close to correct but sometimes the hardware just fails certain calls for no apparent reason (and sometimes they work just fine).
This is a blocker bug for 7.0 final, so it'll get resolved.

There is a "temporary fix" that seems to work for most people. It does not work 100% of the time nor does it work on 100% of phones. (Sorry I couldn't find the original poster of this for credit, if someone knows who discovered this I will give credit where it is due).
Make a Nandroid of your current CM7 setup.
Boot into recovery and perform a full wipe (or use Calkulin Format ALL zip)
Flash any Sense ROM
Open the Market and download MSL Reader, write down MSL.
Open Dialer/Phone and type ##4772579# (##GPSCLRX#)
When it asks you for a password type in your MSL
Reboot phone
BE OUTSIDE
Turn on GPS and open Maps, allow it to fully lock your location (may take a few minutes, do not just wait for initial lock).
Leave GPS on
Turn off phone, reboot into recovery.
Nandroid restore your CM7 backup

Wifi Sleeping
This is yet another tricky issue. For some the "fix" works but others say it does nothing and makes the problem worse. Some say that the problem is the router or security type (WEP theoretically is to blame).
Go to: Menu>Settings>Wireless & networks>Wi-Fi settings>Menu>Advanced>Wi-Fi sleep policy>Never
Facebook Contacts do not sync:
There are two fixes for this:
By phone:Open Facebook app settings> Sync Contacts: pick either sync existing if you only want to match up current contacts or pick sync all if you want to add Facebook friends to your contacts list.
Now open your Contacts app and select a contact to "fix": then hit Menu>Edit Contact>Menu>Join
You will have to do this will all bad contacts.
By computer: Start on your phone and go to Facebook settings and sync contacts as before. Then go to your homescreen>Menu>settings>Accounts and sync and manually sync BOTH Google and Facebook contacts.
Then go to your Gmail on your computer (You can probably do this through your phone's browser but I have not tested it).
Click: Contacts then "More actions \/" then "Find and merge duplicates..." Be sure to double check them!
After that be sure to go back to your phone and manually sync. It may alert you saying that a LOT of contacts have been deleted, just accept that.
Wimax Disconnect Bug:
Problem with wimax/4G disconnecting? Open "Terminal Emulator" and type:
Code:
su <press enter>
killall dhcpcd <press enter>
Swype double tap to change word not working:
This is an issue with the text selection built in to Gingerbread itself. There are two fixes that are essentially the same. First is to single tap the word (placing the cursor in or next to it) then tap the "Swype" key. The second is to upgrade to the latest version of Swype (be sure to uninstall and current version). Instructions are in the next post. The most recent version simply stops trying to change the word on double tap so you will still have to tap the "Swype" key to change the word.
That is all I have for Fixes! Next post will be Tweaks and/or workarounds!
Tweaks to CM7:
4G:
4G/Wimax is a part of the nightlies and is in RC2. Simply update to the latest nightly/RC to enjoy!
HDMI:
#teamwin has this one figured out as well! As of this posting sound through HDMI is still not working but it works through the phone still (or external headset/speakers plugged in the headphone jack). You can download the app through the Market (Click here for market page). This no longer requires an accelerated kernel but it is helpful. If you are running CM7 Nightlies this has been included since Nightly 23. If you are on an older nightly, or RC1 or RC2 you can download it here.
Camera Shutter Sound Removal:
To remove the shutter sound remove or rename (through adb or Root Explorer or other file manager) shutter.ogg in /system/media/audio/ui (if it won't let you remember to mount R/W first!)
Swype:
Go to http://beta.swype.com and register for the beta. When installing a notification will pop up saying that it may interfere with stock beta; do not worry, this is for Sense users and Swype comes in stock Sense now.
Contact searching:
Again there are multiple work arounds:
The simplest is under the stock contacts tab (won't work under phone tab) simply long press Menu. This will bring the keyboard up and you can type to search.
You can also download "Dialer one" or "Dialer2" from the Market.
Visual Voicemail:
There is argument about this fix working.
Nandroid Backup your current CM7 setup. Wipe and flash a stock ROM. Use titanium backup to backup the app and data for VVM. Then Nandroid restore CM7 and restore the app and data for VVM.
The other option is simply to use Google Voice, you do NOT have to get a new number to do this. You can set this up at www.google.com/voice
SD Card speeds:
Transfer speeds are currently very slow with the newest kernel. This is being worked on and should be fixed before CM7 final. Until then you can either boot into recovery and use USB-MS to transfer files or you can download an app called Multi Mount SD-Card from the Market.
Force close ANY app via long-pressing back button:
Go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > check "Stop app via long-press"
ADW Launcher "Slow"?

Those of you getting slugish results need to update their ADW settings (the defaults suck)
1) Screen Preferences - Desktop scrolling speed - set to something low-ish like 150-200, default settings are just plain moronic here. Desktop overshoot should be fine at 30 or 40.
2) Drawer Settings - Horizontal Drawer definite on (this is far superior to the scrolling drawer if you have more than a few apps, and feels much smoother).
3) Drawer Settings - Zoom effect speed - 400 is a decent setting, default was way too high.
4) Drawer Settings - Columns/Rows - 4x4 is a nice setting for portrait, if you don't like a crammed screen.
5) System Preferences - Wallpaper Hack - check this. If you have issues, change wallpapers to something of a sane size.
6) System Preferences - Use Screen Cache - check this.
7) System Preferences - Scrollable Widget support - you should start with this unchecked. Only check it if you have issues with some widgets. In my experience it didn't make a huge difference in performance or smoothness.

For now I am using this for kernels.
Savaged-Zen [2.6.37.4] [HAVS+CFS/BFS!] [with SBC]
Savaged-Zen [2.6.37.4] [HAVS+CFS/BFS!] [with noSBC]
Tiamat [2.6.37.4] [HAVS+BFS] [with or without SBC]
If you are having any problems while using these kernels please flash the stock kernel back (by reflashing the ROM) to see if the problem is the kernel or CM itself.

Great post. This should help a lot of people who have basic problems.

But how do you get holding the "back" capacitive button to force close the app you're in? I always thought that was a CM feature, but I've never been able to figure out how to enable it...

Last I checked, HDMwIn no longer needs a special kernel. The HDMI code was merged in to CM7 Nightlies:

Good post. Can you link the OP to the Wiki as well? There's a CM7-specific page that has a lot of this information. Would be good to cross-pollinate.

I know it may seem arbitrary but I'm trying to keep this just fixes and small tweaks that improve usability. Other mods are more of a person preference issue. I would like to see a thread for that, though. Maybe you could start it
This might also be of interest. From the RC2 Thread in the Development Sub-Forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11388458&postcount=2
Also one thing that might want to note:
RC1 requires the 20110120 GApps which are designed for Android 2.3-2.3.2.
RC2 and Nightly 11+ require the 20110307 GApps which are designed for Android 2.3.3.
The 20110120 GApps can be grabbed from http://goo-inside.me/gapps/ and the 20110307 (since they're newest) can be found at http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/

Yeah, I was aware of that but I figured no one would be on RC1 or pre-11 nightly anymore.
Thanks for all the help guys!
I just want to point out that the CyanogenMod kernel shipped by default uses the BFS scheduler. BFS in theory should be a better scheduler for a device like a cell phone than CFS.

Just in case anyone was wondering, I believe the thread was deleted by a moderator because it contained pirated apps.
anyways, it was deleted while i was replying to some of the comments in the thread, good thing i ctrl+c'd my reply before i hit 'submit'. I'm sure we aren't allowed to link to the rom any more, but we can still discuss it and any issues with it.

Ok, so I added .nomedia to my clockwordmod folder and titanium backup folder in the root of the SD card. The media scanner quit eating battery after that. Results may vary... (i have not done the init.d mod, wondering if I should)
So far no big hiccups, I'm really digging v7. Great work.
Problems:
GPS when turned off doesnt appear to be to happy trying to turn back on without a restart.
Cant find/mount my external microSD card (doesnt show up under external_sd or sd)
Samsung official car dock will not keep the display on (but whats cool is in the desktop dock i now have a neat clock with the display staying on)
In car mode the phone goes to side orientation, but the actual call (when your in a call) does not switch to side orientation.
Can't edit the display settings for the home screen (icons, and "dock options) they just activate and never go to a menu.
Question:
I KNOW I saw a TV out option somewhere..... /sigh

how'd you do it? i did a "batch restore" and it seemed like it worked, but none of the apps show up in the app tray.... but titanum shows that the apps are "restored".... also i'm trying to restore the "data" for a couple games as well, so it has my scores and stuff that i've unlocked...

hey guys, just curious what is the notification toggle app used for? i've never used it.
Click to collapse
it lets you put shortcuts in the notification pull-down bar, for example, the most useful in my case would be the "USB tethering" page, so when i click it, i can choose to tether via wifi or usb, simply by pulling down the notification bar. the "icons" are completely black so it doesn't get in the way.... also the actual button you press on is extremely dark so it's barely noticeable, but just noticeable enough that you'll see it when you need to click it.
my question is, it might be a simple question, but in settings > more > what's the "WiFi direct" button do? and how come the apps that i attempt to restore with titanum backup aren't showing up at all? are they even being sucessfully restored?
also some goods tips would be in Rom Toolbox, go to the Performance tab and click on build.prop Tweaks and change the Wifi scan interval rate to 180 from 90.
also in Settings go into Developer Settings and turn on the Force GPU rendering and also in that screen, also change the HDCP checking to "never use HDCP checking"
I knew that would happen eventually when I saw things like root explorer in some of his roms. Bummer, I like his work.

oh, and for reference, for people who have lag on their v7 roms, here's what neobuddy posted to fix it (again):
I suggest you need to flash fresh after doing these steps:
1. Open zip file on your PC.
2. Delete /system/etc/init.d
3. Place THIS file in system/bin
4. Flash it. Enjoy no lag but less quadrant.

you would "right click" that link, and save it to your desktop and remember to DELETE THE EXTENSION (the .txt), so you would have to "view extensions for known file types" in your windows explorer to be able to erase that part.
For titanuim backup i restored by doing a batch but having the apps ask to install one by one. Takes time but thats what brought them back with their data no system apps.
Didnt know what happened thanks for the clarification on the removal.
Hope things get straighten out.
Still on the hunt for the hd playback issue anyone got some ideas.

Sorry guys, first of all.
I am pretty sure which guys/group reported and got removed Passion thread, not worth disclosing name.
XDA got topic removed due to no Source Code posted and Hacked Apps included.
I agree its my mistake to include hacked apps (which I won't include in next versions)
RootzWiki removed due to such apps used without consent of main app developer. Yes, the app code was from other app.
There are many topics in the Developer Section which contain such apps without consent of Developer. However, they were never reported..
I will be cleaning these apps and make new Topic at other Forums after having talk with Nelson.
I have PMed moderator at RootzWiki to clean the links and restore the topic but I am not sure if they would.

Credits: The RCMix Team and Samuel especially for a great base and all the input! Adrynalyne for providing moral support and figuring out that apparently HTC uses a "calibration" file for Wifi now. He saved my phone from certain death. The boys from IRC and gTalk who tried it out for me and kindly alerted me to my inability to actually fix things.
This ROM is based off of:
2.11.605.5 - Barely...
1.26.605.6 HTC Rhyme Shipping RUU
RCMix 3D Runnymede (Bluetooth Drivers.)
What you will find in features:

Quick Settings Defaults and Rosie Remap (courtesy of Ihtfp)
Disable Rosie Unlock Animation (using the Romanbb method from the MyTouch 4G)

Workaround for Picasa - see notes.
VVM should now install from market.
Couple of other minor annoyances fixed
v0.5
Initial Release
Changelog for Themes/Mods:
I recommend you make changes ONLY to a base ROM, and that you encourage users to return all settings to stock before flashing mods. ie. Don't make a mod for the Rezound launcher, then flash it while running the Rezound launcher. Settings will get all messed up and features will probably not work.
There is now a fusionrun.apk (handles fusion tasks for the Rezound/Runnymede Launcher)
There is now a Rosierun.bak (The actual Launcher for Rezound/Runnymede)
Idlescreen_Base.apk has Smali changes.
Rosie.apk has Smali changes.
SystemUI.apk has Smali changes.
android.policy.jar
com.htc.fusion.fx.jar

Some Important Notes and Tips:
If you use Picasa, make sure you upload a photo from the phone BEFORE you sign into your google account. This will prompt you to sign in and save the credentials for the future. If you don't follow these steps, it won't work!
If you feel the need to "borrow" my work, please don't without my consent. I literally have 3 weeks straight in getting data, BT and WiFi working. I will be more than happy to point anyone in the right direction though.
To change the quick launch widgets on the home screen, press anywhere on the home screen and drag it to the bottom left "edit" icon. From there you will be able to pick and choose which apps you want for your quick launch widgets.
Known Issues - if its listed here DO NOT ask about it in the thread:
The following issues are known about and they are being worked on. Before you post an issue with this rom, you must be on a clean install. If you have not performed a clean install, then your issue cannot be considered valid.
Some things that are just the nature of the beast:
SD Card Mounting
- This comes with the advent of the 3LM device encryption that was introduced (it was here before, but not implemented) in Sense 3.5. This is similar encryption as to what is used in Blackberries that has made them so popular among corporate clients. With Blackberry on the downturn, Android, and more specifically HTC, is trying to get up to the standards set by RIM in an apparent attempt to pick up their business. Unfortunately, it is tied into nearly every aspect of the framework and apps and nearly impossible to disable without causing major issues down the line. I have done everything reasonable (and one not so reasonable thing) to make it work for as many folks as possible. If you are having problems with it, I would recommend you try a different SD card. My 32GB Sandisk Class 4 has no problems. I've also had good luck with an 8GB Samsung class 2.
- If you experience the problem, unmounting and remounting the SD card will fix the issue.
Exchange policies
- This also goes along with the increased security measures HTC is trying to implement. The EAS policies on Sense 3.5 are about 100 times stricter than they ever were before. Can I bypass them? Probably. I'm not going to do that though. They are there for a reason. Your company feels that they are needed for their safety, and I'm not in any position to tell them otherwise. You always have trade-offs when you run a rooted device, and in this case, your ability to have fancy battery icons, may prevent you from getting HTML emails from work. In my opinion, if your phone is that mission critical to your life, you should have either left it alone, or get a second.
Superuser errors
- Ah the cost of progress. The SuperUser team is working hard to get an updated, more intuitive product to you. Unfortunately, it's making it a major pain in the arse to keep it up to date from version to version. If you get force closes, go into the app, and update the binaries. After a reboot, everything should be good.
NEW - Mail Accounts
- While trying to figure out some of the syncing problems with Mail and settings not being retained, I found another major oopsy. I don't know if it's the mail app, or the accounts themselves, but if you use the "Gmail", "Yahoo", "Hotmail", etc... Accounts, you will have a number of problems.
None of them will sync properly
If you set options for one, they will be transferred to all of them and vice versa
Gmail will always BCC you when you reply
Hotmail will never delete on the server
Basically, it's a huge cluster f.
I recommend you use the regular "Mail" account type and set your accounts up that way. Everything is smooth sailing that way. Unfortunately, to do this, you have to wipe data because in addition to the other issues, the accounts also won't delete. Yay HTC!
Burst Mode Force Closes Camera.
WiFi drops out
Mobile Hotspot won't connect - I'm still working on this.
Included VVM may or may not function
Using the alternate Lockscreen causes the notification bubbles on HTC shortcuts to look funny.
Using the alternate Launcher causes the notification bubbles on HTC shortcuts to look funny.
Switching Launchers will cause any non-HTC widgets to disappear from the home screen and be replaced with "Problem loading Gadget"
Switching Launchers *may* cause Sense Widgets to disappear from the personalize menu. You can either Clear data on HTC Sense (loses home screen settings) or access them from the "Browse All HTC Widgets".
Some hub skins cause weird graphical errors.
HTC mail app - email portrait body preview reverts back to 2 lines after changing it

I have been jumping through ROMs like crazy, trying to find one that I really like. Well, my search is over. I LOVE this ROM! SOAB is fast, stable, and very much to my liking.
My only problem I had, was (as posted in the description) the Visual Voicemail wasn't working. But after some hard searching, and trial and error on many APK files, I got it working, so now I'm completely happy with this ROM.
Kudos to the cooks.

Nice to see back on XDA Butch!
Love to see Butch's remix with this baby

Would you be so kind as to share what apk ended up working? I miss terribly my vvm on this rom!
Thanks!

Here you go. This takes a few minutes to start up (and get occasional data not available), but once it connects, it works flawlessly.
(Hope I attached it right LOL)

...I'm so out of the loop. Hi Butchie (first good news I've read here in a whiiiile) xoxo
How is this version different from the version 1.04 released on BAMF forums last year????
Has the OP made a special version of the old SOAB from last December??
Thanks for your clarification!!

Its the same version
I downloaded this from team bamf forums and was my daily for a week. Loved it. My only problem was that the swiftx keyboard (paid app from Amazon) kept looking for predictions to load. It's probably due to the same security measure mentioned in the OP. Since I depend on that keyboard, I had to change (now using miniBamf aosp). Good to see you guys back.

I use swiftkey X with no problem on SOAB 1.04
Try uninstalling and then re-running the learning algo's.
Thus far, my only complaint is that every day or so I have to reboot it to fix connectivity issues with the 4G. Otherwise its fantastic!
This rom is a thing of beauty man you guys really did an amazing job, runs smooth as hell and theme job is really nice!
