Anyone use Sprint 4G now? - EVO 4G General

Hey guys. Does anyone have experience with Sprint 4G right now? Speeds? Reliability? I love the EVO and want to know what 4G might be like using this device.

Don't expect much off the bat, to be honest. 2-10mbps, spotty service, etc. It's like 3G was when that was rolled out, it's going to take time to iron things out.

It probably depends on where you live. In Corpus Christi, I can great speeds, up to 20 mbs, in certain parts of town and less than 1 in others.
I have an Intel WiMAX card in my notebook and an Overdrive device. I always get considerably better speeds using my WiMAX card than I do the Overdrive. The WiMAX connects using Clear's service, but it is the same service that Sprint's Overdrive connects to.
Eddie

How is the latency? Is it good for gaming or better for just browsing?

I used Clears WiMax service at home for a couple weeks. The speeds were so so but latency was so horrible that I could not use it for voip or xbox live at all. The best part of it was at midnight or so every night (when I get home from work and need it the most) the service would go down for maintenance for 1-3 hours.
p.s. WiMax is not 4G

???
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G

Wimax as it stands now is not "4G" in the certification sense. Then again, neither is LTE. The 4G certification stands at 100mbps, Wimax2 and LTE Advanced will have the 4G certs. LTE and Wimax are technically called 3.9G, as the basis of the tech will lead into 4g.
That being said, Verizon and AT&T aren't going to say anything, because they're doing the same damn thing.

You sir have no idea what your talking about. WiMax is Sprint's forth generation technology, you should read a bit more about 802.11m.

You ma'am should read more. The post above you should help you out

I noticed that corpus was one of the cities to get 4g. I look forward to it as I am visting at the end of June.
Sent from my HERO200 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

i am in Ft Worth texas.. it has had 4G/wimax (whatever) as one of the test cities. I got the overdrive device 3 weeks ago.
I live in the suburbs and work near downtown.
at both locations I only get 20% signal strength. And the speed is about double what I get on 3G. well the 3G signal strength was also about 20-30% too!!!
sometimes, i can get 40% and see the speed hit 1.2-1.5mbs. but that is for a very short time, maybe a min or two. 95% of the time i am 20%.. and sometime i loose all signal!!! I have tried to download larger files 100mb or higher, but it fails because, before I can finish the download it will loose signal and I have to start over. So i have no faith in the stability of this tech, at this time. It is good for casual internet stuff, but for work, large files, time sensitive issues, I would not bet on it. They need more towers!!!!!!

4g is great u just have to be withone one mile of a 4g enabled tower in order to get real 4g service

It seems pretty good. My step son has his Xbox360 connected and plays Call of Duty all the time. He says there is no lag at all. He was getting lag when connected to our Road Runner account.
It does make a difference on where you are and where you place the modem. He puts the modem in the window.

I'm sorry, what's so funny with that statement? I find it hard to believe that the latency is lower with a 4g connection, but I donno... I guess I just don't get it.

Anyone getting subpar 4G service (Philadelphia)

my 4g signal is coming in pretty weak and the speeds i am getting are fairly slow. when doing a speed test with the evo and my old g1 my results are:
Evo 2,700kbps on 4g
G1 3,800kbps on HSPA+
I know HSPA+ is fast but i would would expect the 4g to be a bit faster, when i use my clearwire usb stick on my laptop i can pull speeds upto 17mbps. I even tried it in different areas around the city with no change. I know its still an emerging technology but i would like to see if anyone else in a 4g are has had this issue. any thoughts?
Ive given up on 4g and Im completely happy on 3g with this phone, saves battery too.
Ive gotten 4g signal ONCE and ive had the phone for a week, in a 4G market. Still love the phone just not buyin the 4g hype. I dont even call it evo 4g anymore, its just...Evo
edit::: in Hawaii (oahu) btw
I hear ya, 4g seems more of a novelty at this point. I love the phone but im tempted to return it and stick with tmobile for now.

Im right over the bridge in NJ and getting 2mb. isnt it capped anyway? its fast enough for me.
I'm around the philly area, and when I do get a 4th signal it will go from 2mbps to 5mbps
I'm near the Baltimore area and so for the most signal I have gotten was one bar and I hit 3500kbps but on average just the 4g icon is lit and I get about 2000kbps. Also when testing you should tether to a laptop because doing the test from the phone isnt very accurate.
I work in King of Prussia, PA and my 4g signal for the past two weeks has been anywhere from 2 to 3.5 mbps. Inside buildings it is worse. Just remember that when 3g first came out it wasn't as good as it is today. It just takes time for a new technology to become a great technology.
Im getting like 2mbps here in new jersey too...

I'm thinking the same thing. Did you port your number?, what happens if you did and you decide to go back?

I read somewhere earlier that Sprint was having a problem with the 4g network, a sprint rep told a guy over the phone (yes the are not always right, but in this case it seems to be something going on). Everyone around the US seems to be reporting similar problems with the 4g network.
I'm in Seattle, and when I do get 4G, it's about 1800kbps. In comparison, mt T-Mobile 3.5G on my N900 got about 3800kbps. So far, I'm very unimpressed. Might be taking this thing back if it doesn't get any better.
That being said, the 3G service seems to be very fast and responsive even though I'm only getting about 1000kbps.
as jus10 mentioned, sprints 4g is getting hit extremely hard. they were expecting it and that is why they have not crashed but theres only sooo much bandwidth. so with everyone saying 4g is bad right now, just use wifi for now haha.
we are basically beta testers for 4g. it has never been used in this large of scale. but anyways it will def. get better and better but hey anything faster than 3g is good.
im hoping it gets better cause it saddens me that tmobile hspa+ is faster. as i stated i can can pull 17mbps down on my clear usb 4g stick which makes me think they might need to push out an update for the evo.
I didnt port my number yet cause i wanted to try out sprints network before i commited lol.
also the 4g isnt capped on the down side, only on the up.
What are you guys speed testing with. Also you'll probably see 4g has big advantages on latency and upload speed. Doesn't matter how big the pipe(bandwidth) if the pump (latency) is too slow. Latency will make a big difference in voip and video conferencing. I suggest doing some video streaming comparisons vs. Pure bandwidth tests.

When did you hit 17Mbps & is it easily repeatable? I'd just test both back to back in the same area to pin point the problem. Sprint could have the HTC Evo at a lower priority on the network over the data sticks and hotspots.
I can hit 17mbps at my friends house which is about 3 miles from me. tried the evo there and still only getting about 3mbps.
Did a quick test today, 250KBps (2Mbps) down. Thats outside, cuz inside I dont get signal at all... and I thought that Portland, being the most mature city for 4G, would be at least better than that... as someone said above, I also given up on 4G. Tether 3G through USB and I get 140KBps to 200KBps down on my laptop, which is more that enough for emergencies. Otherwise I just use wifi in my house & office. Can't beat 22Mbps comcast connecton
That being said, atm Evo "4G" is just a marketing term, nothing more.
here in Vegas,
This is at my house in whats considered a spotty 4g area. I have noticed over the past couple days the 4G service keeps getting faster. On the first night i was only able to get 2.3 Mbps down.
portland oregon
3g 1.78mb/s down at best
4g 2.89mb/s down at best with full bars
Any PHILADELPHIA updates from EVO owners living in the Philly area? (S, Jersey, Philly burbs, etc)
I am curious about 4G availability, reliability, and speeds.
Thank you.

Houston 4G connectivity issues

Greetings folks, long time no see
Anyone having a difficult time staying connected to 4G in Houston? From my experience so far, all 3 locations I have tried it out... (BB, Work, Home) are all in "In-Building" 4G coverage area. NONE of them can connect "In-Building". If I walk outside, it will connect then drop sporadically, or not connect at all. 3G has connectivity issues as well, but I want to focus on the big selling point of 4G here.
Any other experiences to speak of?
-Rock
Guess I should have posted this in the Q&A. MOD: Please feel free to relocate thread.
I have the same experience in the Memorial City (I-10 BW8 W) and East Katy (Fry) area. I'm happy with the 3g speed for what I use the phone for and have only turned on 4g for testing.
Im guessing it might be an issue with both signals from the towers and radio on the EVO. I have called Sprint to express my disappointment with the 4G service. I hope that HTC will make some magic happen with software upgrades. I also have tried the newer radio upgrade but still have issues once im inside of buildings.
just like when the iphone came out there were problems the same is happening now. i was getting good speeds up until a few hours ago here in NJ. my phone says 3G but im getting edge speeds
Not Houston, but same for me...
I am in St. Louis, and although 4G isn't official here yet (last I heard was 6/21) I am seeing the same thing. Indoors, it is almost a crap shoot.
Outside, it will get one "bar" of 4G... sometimes. Never really solidly locks on 4G.
I think it is an issue with the EVO radio firmware, at least I hope so, because I have the luxury of testing it side-by-side with an Overdrive, and I can consistently maintain a 4G signal of 2-3 bars on the Overdrive, if I put it in the window of my office.
Sadly, the Overdrive is seriously outperforming the reception of the Evo in my experiences so far.

I'm in Houston. After doing the PRL update I got great coverage, everywhere except my downtown office (15th floor...so thats to be expected)
had connectivity issues the first day, here on the Northside, but if you update your profile, prl, and take your battery out a few times you may find a change..i did
THIS NEEDS TO BE SETTLED! I think I have an objective view.
I'm in Houston, TX so we have 4G coverage with ClearWire. I got my EVO on Friday, along with everybody else. I went to Best Buy to look at some accessories, while I was there I was chatting with the ClearWire rep running the demo and trying to sign up new customers. He was inside with store with his Clearwire USB dongle and laptop. We decided to run some speed comparisons, so I downloaded 2 speedtest apps from the Android market, one of them being for Speedtest.net. The best speed I got on my EVO with 4G enabled (and 1 bar of 4g) was about 2.25 Mbit down, and 1.1 Mbit up. I ran this test multiple times with me standing next to him, then putting my EVO next to the USB dongle to make sure I was getting the same signal. The rep's laptop, again running the speedtest from Speedtest.net and us using the the SAME servers, he got at least 6 Mbit down and almost 2 Mbit up. The best he got that I saw was like 7.2 Mbit down. He said that earlier that day he got as high as 10 Mbit down.
This is just telling me that it's either the processor that is limiting the speed, or it's the 4G antenna in the EVO. I saw that his 4G signal was pretty good being a bit outside the city, in Katy at Fry Road and I-10. I live just outside downtown I do get 4G inside my home, but again 1 or 2 bars. With my limited investigation I'm going to have to conclude that the network speed is NOT ClearWire's fault, but more like a hardware limitation on the EVO. If someone modded the phone with a better antenna the speed might improve.
About the existing 3G speed and with EVO is WOW! 3G response is soooo much faster on the EVO that it was on my G1. Another comparison is my home AT&T U-verse: I get 5.71 Mbit down and 0.94 Mbit up. I'm trying to think of a way that I can get my TV another way and get ClearWire for home instead of U-verse.
More likely clear is capping us to maintain QoS for direct customers.
Sent from my EVO
Hmm, I'm inside my house on Katy "Fry Rd. @ I10" and have 2 bars. Walk outside the front door no change. Typically outside around the Katy area I get about 2-3 bars.

Just a little upset for the reason being that Sprint would state that their 4G is 10x faster than EVDO. Taking the lower results of EVDO(600Kbps) and comparing it to the higher 4G(6Mbps). I have yet to see 3Mbps downstream on their 4G network in Houston. I have tested Clear's and Sprint's usb side by side and ofcourse it's only capped on Sprint. So on that point its not the same.

I can see that, but even 3G on this phone seems way faster than other phones. I'm sure it has to do with the CPU beign able to render pages much quicker than previous devices.
That said, my 4G speeds are averaging about twice as fast as 3G
Drove down 45 from the medical center to Spring yesterday and got 4G all the way. As far as the downspeed goes, I agree, it's probably QoS since Sprint's 4G network is still in its infant stage.

Thanks for this info, I think you are right, something is capping our throughput. I hope Sprint come out with new firmware patch to resolve this. I am not happy with my less than 2Mbit download speed on 4G!
Well, I wish I was seeing the same coverage as everyone else. I can't get 4G inside at all. I got all the updates last week, but see there is yet another PRL update I was unaware of. *Finders crossed.
I don't think wimax will ever have good indoor coverage. The frequency it runs at is much too high.
Sent from my EVO
Since I work for Clear, I can tell ya'll that we do not cap anything. Also, as far as Sprint goes, they just use and resell our service. I will, however, be willing to be that there may be something with the device that maybe a firmware upgrade may fix but honestly who knows.
I have yet to see anyone get above 4mbs on the Evo...I think it has something to do with the device.

12.7Mbps Down over WiMax in Houston

I have noticed I get MUCH faster while USB tethered, and when I have everything killed on the phone. SO all it's doing is routing over WiMax and the lapotp/computer is doing most of the work makes sense though.. it's having to do less work so the CPU can focus on routing WiMax packets only.
Anyway, I was doing some updates over ubuntu's update manager tethered and I hit 12.7Mbps down!
XDA scales down the pictures so much I have a zoomed up pick too of the network metrics
Guess I should mention I am running BBv0.3 (Hope pete comes back soon and fixes v4 or even drops froyo v5 on us)
And I have used Titanium Backup to pull nearly all htc sense stuff off that ROM as well as removing anything I didn't want running in the background.

Actually those tests were run, and I am currently sitting on the basement level of a large concrete government-style building. Granted I have a tower about 2 blocks from where I work though, still I haven't seen all these "penetration" issues people complain about with WiMax. Houston has some strong signals though.
I've actually started noticing 4G is a LOT better after the update, but it has always been very good here in Boston, even though it's not even officially launched yet.I have read somewhere that new markets have newer equipment, and Sprint is literally adding WiMAX base stations to all sprint and nextel towers. It will only get better with time.

It's your standard LAN. It's just the second-fastest in the country. Top speeds around 2Gbps, but unfortunately my router isn't even fast enough for it, and I didn't want to shell out for one!

Well those numbers were from the JSC area, and I can get 4-6Mbps where I live in West U. The "signal" strength is kinda pointless IMO because it's more your connection to the tower than your bandwidth to the internet. I have noticed better bandwidths with 1-2 bars than with full 4 bars a lot of times
well i live in an area saturated in 4g well everywhere in town but where i live...sigh
anyways los from an antenna and nothing near your speeds, and like i said my small town is saturated by 4g i can literally walk 3 streats down and 4g kicks in

I think some people have come to expect too much from WiMax. I have heard complaints about it not getting more than 3Mb/s yet they don't complain about the 900kb/s they get otherwise with 3G - its more than triple yet they want more.
I am happy to get sustained 3Mb/s speeds wirelessly anywhere. Hell 2Mb/s sustained is better than any Wifi at Starbucks or places that offer free Wifi. Most of them let you ride off their T1 line. Can we say 1.5Mb/s shared to everyone!
I am very happy to get the speeds that I do. It's SOOOOO much better now with the update. I am interested to see where I got the 5Mb/s before the update to see what it will give me now. It's a local starbucks that I frequent. I am curious.
Great speeds by the way!

As good as it is, 2.5-3 mbps is equivalent to AT&T 3G speeds, that's why people complain.
You can say their network sucks, but it's bigger than Sprint's 4G at the moment
No 4G for me here, and I would be happy with 3 mbps sustained, but I wouldn't call expecting more than that unreasonable for 4G. It should (and will, eventually) handily beat other existing 3G networks. Looks like it has already started according to the OPs results.

I'm in Seattle and see similar 4G behavior. Usually 2 bars or so and not great performance (marginally better than 3G). I'd be interested to see if this can be improved by tweaking the settings also.
the 4G antenna in the EVO is half the size of the USB one, I don't even get signal at my house on my EVO, yet I get 1.5MBs on my USB stick. Size matters.
Idk about 4G but i just moved into a new house and i have TERRRIBLE reception no matter where i am. If im not outside, it sucks. Its funny though, as soon as i step out the door, 5-6 bars. Im keeping the phone in hopes that as soon as they get 4G around here (Elmont, NY... Long Island), things will change. =\
sprints 4g is in a horrible part of the spectrum. it's frequency is too high to pass through anything

unless you are a running a stock rom with the latest updates, i don't think you can make any of these complaints that you all are unless 4g isn't fully up and running in your city. My girlfriend just got the white evo and we installed the latest updates and she gets a very good 4g signal, i have the black evo running fresh 0.5.3 and i get a pretty good signal myself. Not to mention we live in mpls and 4g isn't even officially here yet. A lot of these problems people are having are user errors, flashing things with no knowledge of what they are doing. I would say go back to stock do to ota update with the new radio and wimax enhancements then tell me what type of 4g coverage you are getting. otherwise you are just trusting the chef that everything is set up right which i would take with a grain of salt because non of them seem to understand exactly how the wimax radio works as of yet. Proof of this is all the problems people are having after trying numerous roms

That's not very encouraging, I am very disappointed by Sprint's 3g speeds. I have yet to see over 1mbs, and over the 4th of July weekended saw .2-.7 mbs. Yes, .2 as in 192kbs. This was in Miami.

I started this thread with the intentions of looking into the settings of the wimax ##data# menu....not too rant about the service. I believe with the good signal I'm getting and the fact that I do connect shows that there's an issue with either the roms were flashing or the setting mentioned above. Anybody care to post their settings?

Changing the wimax idle sleep time from 10 secs to 300 secs could help. My 4G stays on pretty much constantly now instead of switching back and forth between 4G and 3G. You would need your MSL to edit the settings though.
I have similar issues in the chicago land area as well. Very frustrating. I am using a stock rooted rom, but I am using an older OTA update. When I'm outside I always have a strong 4G signal. However, as soon as I go in doors I either loose the signal or have a very weak one. Before you say anything about updating, my GF's EVO is completely stock with the newest OTA update and her 4G behaves very similarly. I actually pick up a better signal at times. It just sucks because if the signal was just a LITTLE bit stronger I would be really happy.
Thats just due to the spectrum used for wimax is at such a high frequency that it does not penetrate walls very well. I'm not sure how sprint will try to remedy this problem, I'm not sure but I get strong signals at my work office and thats inside a building. At home I can get 4G if I am outside once inside I cant seem to get it at all.
What's "##data#" ? I would search it but haven't quite figured it out yet on the app. Google didn't help either (surprisingly).

jr - I am in Gold Coast and recently noticed the 4G signal was junk. It used ot be great inside my 13th floor apartment. I went to the sprint store and they said one of the towers was being serviced (they called a tech. and he said this while I was there). They said end of this week it would be fixed. I was going to give them another week or so and see what the deal is then.
IMO it kind of defeats the purpose of having 4G then. 90% of the time that I want to surf the internet or use 4G I'm indoors, and I would imagine that goes for pretty much everybody. I know this isn't a problem for everybody so it seems, but I think for a lot of people it is.
interesting you say 4 bars of 4g. when i look at my phone i can get up to 6 vertical bars for 3g's signal strength, but with 4g on, and outside i can get 3 "bars" more like "upper wifi arcs" above the 4g signal. and inside my 4g doesn't even register anything, it just shows 4g with no arcs...
however my technique is to put the phone right next to the window and run my micro usb cable from there to my computer. and i then get great data connection...
still experimenting, (had the phone for less than a week) but i think it might work better to go to menu/settings/wirless&networks/ and uncheck mobile network so the phone doesn't use the 3g for data connection when 4g isn't there...
thus if the 4g signal is low, it doesn't drop it to grab the higher signal 3g...
lastly. i'm heading to the store to try to pick up a 2 buck plastic soap dish with a suction cup for the "high tech holding station" on my window. that and a 10 foot micro usb cable i think that will help even more...
best of luck.
I have figured out where in my neighborhood I can get a 4G signal (and I too keep my phone near the window when I want to use it at home). However since the OTA, I noticed that if my 4G signal drops it won't come back unless I toggle the 4G radio. It will just sit in "scanning" and use 3G.
Anyone else noticing this problem?
I would assume that one of the settings/timers need to be tweaked, but I have no idea what my those values were before the OTA.

4G has nothing to do with 3G. Clearwire maintains the 4G network and Ericsson maintains the 3G/1X network do if your 3G is bad now, it won't be any different when 4G launches unless Ericsson improves the situation.
If I'd got this device predominantly for 4G...Id've returned it in day one...(IN Chicago also). In fact wouldn't have bought it going in knowing what I knew about the spottiness of tapping into 4G frequency wirelessly.
that makes absolutely no sense.
per your words, 4G has nothing to do with 3G as in Clearwire has nothing to do with Ericsson so what would it matter if Ericsson decided to step its game up if Clearwire is the 4G company?
4G is on a whole different frequency not to mention a whole different tower technology and tower location possibly so there's definetly a good chance that I can maintain a great 4G signal once it arrives in my area compared to the terrible 3G coverage I get.
well see what happens... my luck they will never put 4G by me lol.

Speeds...think ya'll got issues.

How about this...post 3.29 upgrade so really hoping it ISN'T because of upgrade...

LOL wow that's pretty bad. But that's not the phone's fault. There are many factors in play that can slow down your connection.. Network Capacity, Bandwidth, Signal strength, etc.
It's still pretty bad though. Try again later, things should improve.
holy latency!
I live on the water in Chesterfield, Michigan and have the same great 3g speeds!

You did pick the closest server right?
Most days my speeds aren't even good enough to stream a youtube vid on low quality. Rarely they are.
Its hit or miss some days.

Boy, your area must suck for Sprint service (since that's not the common experience). Sounds like something that you should have noticed within your first 30 days though.
op - are the speeds the same in different areas at different times of day? On different servers?
Sent from my blah blah blah blah
Mine are worse at my University, too many students with 3G phones.
try the vzw pro mod?

Only tried this since upgrade friday night. I'll definitely be running a couple of speed tests in other neighborhoods. I have NEVER been this slow in this area...ran the test a couple of times and they all sucked...might have to nand back to 3.26 and see what speeds are like.

i live in allendale michigan during the school year and the past month or so my speeds have been just like this. my guess would be from an increase in network traffic from all the new evo's. ill do a test right now at 11 pm, will probably be much faster than i normally get nowadays. its damn ridiculous, before the evo i used to get 1.5 mbps download all the time.
IN BOTH TEST I HAVE 4-5 BARS. (i can see the cell towers out my back door)
test 1
download 357 kbps
upload 127 kbps
ping 477 ms
test 2
download 95 kbps
upload 169 kbps
ping 829
these are horrible, data is pretty much unusable at these speeds.
edit: btw i do live in a college town (grand valley state university) so there are a lot of cell phone users.
Suck it up! Data speeds at my apartment are TERRIBLE even though I've got fantastic service. I've got tons of these extremely slow data tests.
It's been a while since I was testing - I've given up. I just steal the neighbor's wifi for my phone now.
BTW, I'm like 45 mins west of you, hockey4life. I'm in Muskegon. It's only bad right near my apt. though :/ It's fine all the rest of the time around town here.
1.27mbit up HAH I'd love to see that. The only two which are moderately fast on my speedtest list are when I was trying out 4G in Grand Rapids!

guys, have you tried the vzw prl mod?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
this may help you out by putting you on verizon towers.
so it seems like michigan in general blows right now. it sucks, i guess i should look into that verizon hack, thanks.
Have any of you tried using real signal from the market? Just because the phone shows you signal bars, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have good signal for data. Real signal will show you your actual signal strength as it relates to both voice and data service.

no, but in my case the tower is right outside my house so it definitly should be high.
also, its not just in my house where its bad. it is everywhere in this area. the only time i get good good data speeds is far from area. i made a report and they said they would send a technician to look at the tower but doubt they actually will. if im stuck like this for the rest of this year im gonna flip.

Looks like quite the improvement to the speeds that I get at my house in Idaho.
But...I get 4G in most places that I'm at + I use android tether all the time, even at school sometimes. I try not to complain about Sprint's ****ty 3G too much, especially since the price is right.
Getting awful 3G speeds in Kalamazoo, MI as of late.. i'm lucky if its above 100KB down - upstream seems a little slow but closer to normal..
Hmm.. Whats the deal?
I think those 3g speeds are great compaired to my 150kb down and 110kb up in my house.
There's 4g about 15 ft away, but unusable 3g inside.
do any of you michiganders have any improvements? how about anyone else? im starting to wonder if things are gonna stay like this, i cant take these 2g (or 1g) speeds. there is essentially no reason for me to be paying data right now cause the only time i can use my phone pretty much is when im on wifi. if i was a new customer i definitely be using my 30 days right about now and switching carriers.
for the past few years ive been a sprint advocate with their good data coverage, good speeds, and good pricing but this is just horrible.
