Just picked up a Snap. (Euro model)
The top row keys (menu keys, home, back, etc..) make a funny sound when I click them. They feel very "wrong". It sounds like it makes a click before I actually push it all the way in. So there is a sorta plastic-y double-click sound.
I rushed back to the store and the guy opened another box to compare and that was making the same noise too. He suggested it's new and will break in with time. (The display model was good but it has been "broken in" by a lot of customers.)
(QWERTY part of keyboard is fine.)
I'm inclined to think BOTH phones had a problem and it makes me feel uncomfortable.
I had a similar experience with a laptop's touchpad button once and it got worse over time. So this is why I'm pessimistic.
Has anyone else had this problem/issue?
here i'm. same problem on my italian htc snap.

Well it's good to know.... but also sad news because apparently HTC screwed up something.
After using mine for 24 hours the problem was worsening so I just returned it to the store.
I don't know how old is yours (and if it's getting better or worse), maybe you can also return it?
I didn't get another one because frankly I was not awed by the Snap.
Coming from an Excalibur (S620) and based on specs I was expecting to be blown away by the performance of Snap.
But with 3VOLUTION's latest 6.5 ROM on my trusty (and beaten) Excalibur I could not see any improvement. (minus, of course, 3G and GPS)
Maybe I will buy another Snap in the future but going to wait until this hardware issue gets acknowledged/fixed.
PS. It is important to point out, the phone they had on display -abused by a lot of people- was PERFECT. Strange.
@an.ghezzi - please let me know the age of your phone and how this issue develops over time.
i've bought the snap just a week ago and the problem is always here.
not worse, not better. let's wait, maybe someone can tell us what's wrong.

PS. the "funny sound" came only from the "call" and "home" buttons. the others sounds ok...
Just an update.
I picked up a second Snap a couple of weeks ago. Tried the keys in the store and they were not perfect but almost.
Lately I'm getting pissed off with them again. They are just as bad as the first one was. And I know this is a minor problem - probably not even a problem for most people - but I get so frustrated by it. This damn thing feels so cheap. Cheap crap plastic. My Excalibur is 3 years old but still rocking stronger.
I'm not happy.
Same with me. I have a T-Mobile Dash 3G and was wondering why this was happening. It's happening on my left softkey button and home button. I'm gonna take it back to T-Mobile on Tuesday.
Yeah I'm very pissed about this. This new phone (second one, after returning first) is just sitting in my drawer and I'm back on my Excalibur. Squeaky cheap plastic is my pet peeve.
Unfortunately I'm through the 14 days return so I'm stuck with it.
I have one of the first HTC Dash 3G's, got it from Customer service before they were even available for sale online or stores, I have no problems with the buttons what-so-ever, no clicking, just smooth presses. I wonder if there was a shoddy batch that went through to some areas.
Try some rubbing alcohol
On my Ozone, I've noticed a bit of trouble with a few of the keys on the top row feeling spongy. I used a alcohol wipe to kind of loosen up the keys which worked great. I also had noticed the battery cover recently started creaking, so I tore a business card in half and placed it over the battery, which tightened that right up.

Now i know why there are less stocks of snap in asia! i have the same soft key problem, even after one to one exchange! am really disappointed with htc on this, not sure how many others have this problem and if there is anything we can do to fix this? maybe even take it apart??? arghhh...
I ended up selling my second Snap too.
Besides the sticky keys I just did not like it :-/
ookba's custom ROM made it a lot nicer but I just could not get used to the device. Yes the keyboard looks great but the overall design is odd (screen too small compared to the whole unit), it just did not feel balanced.
I have a bad feeling about the fate of the "standard" WinMo (non-touch) edition. The new professional devices are getting nicer. They need to get a new finger friendly OS and a proper capacitive touch screen - once they do that, non-touch will go extinct.
I guess it took me until now to see how Microsoft ignored mobile development for so long. What was killer technology in 2006 is just a mess by now.
I still love my Excalibur, I dare to say it was the best phone I ever had.
Here is how I imagine the perfect phone: Blackberry makes the hardware. Ookba joins Microsoft and they release WinMo 8, or so. XDA community builds GUI.
I really wonder how many people are facing this issue... sigh.
So far, it seems its happening all over the world. I have tested and changed 3units. The current one is a bit better ... at least the call button does not creaks as much. But I miss the e71 in terms of built quality. I was hoping there is some hack we can perform to fix this.

I bought my HTC Snap from Singapore. Experienced the same "weird" feeling, but only on the Call (Green) and End (Red) buttons.
Seems to be getting a tiny bit better after using it for a week (or maybe i've become accustomed haha)
Agree with you on the screen proportion thingy. I still love my old E61. Keyboard + Screen was spacious and lovely. Fast forward a few years and this is the best HTC could come up with?

After almost a month with the Vibrant, Why I chose G2..
I really enjoyed the big screen on the vibrant, definitely there is no flaws there, with the gorilla glass the samoled screen was just perfectly crisp.
The camera's daytime shots looked beautiful and camcorder recording was great, 720P quality, and night time mode wasn't too shabby either.
I actually thought the TouchWiz experience was fairly pleasant. Swype was also excellent.
However, theres just so many things wrong with the vibrant that urked me.
My G1 had better reception, 5 Bars, vs the Vibrant's 1-2 Bar or Occasional No Signal
The touch buttons at the bottom of vibrant, while they were pretty sensitive, it felt laggy...
Samsung Built their %$%# file system on their own properietary technology

Ultimately, I felt like the Vibrant was an early prototype with lots of issues, and weighing how long each phone would last I felt the G2 would last 2 years like my G1, but the Vibrant I'd be lucky if it lasted a year, especially with it having such flimsy buttons, (power/vol). I basically babied the Vibrant, had a case, and a pouch to keep it extra safe. I didn't feel the need to do that with the G1.
Although I loved the swype on a big screen, I realize, buttons are important, even if you don't need them all the time, especially for games, scrolling through text, flash games, remoting to your pc at home. Connecting to a terminal perhaps?
In this sense, the G2 is the true gaming phone, and not the vibrant, it seems all the vibrant is geared to do is to play avatar movie, and the sims 3 mobile game, so they beefed up the ram usage for the gpu.
Also, who could deny the guaranteed development community that the G2 will definitely have, I felt the entire vibrant development was powered by 3-4 people. Samsung hasn't even come out with 2.2 yet on the vibrant, and even if they do, their crappy file system and kernels is still going to suck up a good chunk of the good it brings. My G1, made by HTC was sturdy, I've dropped it hard countless times onto concrete and it worked fine till the day I got rid of it.

Sounds more like the Vibrant broke your heart, than the G2 winning your heart. All phones have issues, If you beleive you will be happier with the G2 then thats all that matters.
Personaly i wont be happy untill tmobile has a Solid 4.3 In display Android phone.
Well said, I do eventually want something with the build quality and feel of the HD2, I saw in the t-mobile store, theres something nice when something is made out of metal, with metallic feeling buttons.
4.3? I'm straight on that. That's HUGE! I can't be carrying box of girl scout cookies sized in my pocket. That's like carrying a first gen PSP in your pocket. (I think)
But I know what you mean, big screens are cool.
I've never owned any popular smart phone, so this will be my first Android phone and I'm glad it's going to be the G2. I just can't wait to hop onto the mobile app world own it up!

Why I probably will sell the Vibrant for the G2 is because of the following Vibrant issues that I have had with three different Vibrants:
1. Have to go into service mode to change the bluetooth settings for people to hear me because I sound too far away otherwise.
2. I can't view full pages with about:debug because it crashes the browser.
3. When I hold the phone close to the bottom I do lose reception.
4. How long it's taking for froyo to come out.
5. Lack of flash (Small not a big problem)
6. And ofcourse the notorious GPS.
To some these might not be a big deal but it was has me really thinking of switching. Don't get me wrong, I love the screen size and the screen itself. But function always comes before form for me.

I just bought my mom the Vibrant.. lol.
She's coming from an old ass Nokia candybar. I hope it's not too difficult for her to get used to.

well, so did I, except 2 weeks ago I dropped my G1 on my wood floor at home, and that finally did the trick. the screen went all staticy and unreadable (though the phone still technically functioned otherwise).
such bad timing because I was gonna get the G2 anyway. but I'm a data addict and had to get a replacement phone for the meantime, also I got a mt3g 1.2. I was surprised, but its like way faster. the 1.2 version has 256 RAM as opposed to the 192 in the G1 and mt3g original, and it makes a huge difference. I don't need compcache turned on to to keep web pages in memory and gtalk signed in. I never realized how much compcache slows down the system.
long story short - as much as the mt3g 1.2 was an upgrade over the G1, the G2 is gonna be like 5 times that. can't wait.

I agree, I have been waiting for T-Mobile to release an Android handset with the build quality of the HD2.
The G2 is the closest thing I have seen, it feels very solid and well built.
Now if it would just get here.
Makes me glad we Sprint users got the most unique Galaxy S, flash and keyboard and GPS that works. Plus I can't believe this beast of a phone is so light as well.
Now, a Vibrant to the G2 might make sense to some but I dare say that if Samsung had made the Epic for all the U.S carriers in its current iteration (keyboard + flash), you might be singing a different tune.

My 2008 Corvette with an aftermarket exhaust drones, my nokia n95, n85, e71, iphone, etc all worked fine but the Vibrant pics up the drone and noone can hear me when my car is on. I was going to buy a wireless bluetooth to fix the problem but that seems like such a bandaid fix.

had a VW R32 w/aftermarket exhaust that had a horrible drone - only did it between 2200 - 2800 rpm. Unless you're headache proof, it can be eliminated. I found the point on the exhaust line that were vibrating like a tuning fork & secured them it with an additional hanger strap/bracket and wrapped the muffler body with asbestos tape - knocked 80% of the drone out - wife became more agreeable to riding in it after that
I honestly dont find it that bad, every other phone works fine but the vibrant
T-Mobile is swapping my Vibrant for a G2, but I have to wait until the 6th to get it done. On my 3rd Vibrant. GPS and lag issues. I didn't expect them to do a swap. I was expecting to pay something. Nice.

I love my G1. It is rock solid. I've dropped it in water until it was several inches submerged... TWICE. I've dropped in on concrete many times. I used the clear, hard plastic, T-Mobile cases, and actually drove off with it on the roof of my car. At 20mph I saw it fly past my window and hit the ground. The case flew off, but the phone is completely fine.
Heck, my wife had one, dropped it in the grocery store parking lot (didn't realize it). I sent a text message to her phone and used GPS Tracker to find the phone. I then went to the parking lot and started calling her phone. It had been run over and thrown into a garbage can. The screen was toast, and the phone was dented and scratched, but the screen still lit up, the GPS still worked, and the phone was still ringing and accepting texts. Amazing!!
I hope the G2 is as good as the G1 was only updated. If so, I'll be very happy.
I've got a coworker with a Droid X. He's had problems with his phone locking up and freezing and needing to be rebooted, much more than I ever had with my G1, even when it was rooted and running all sorts of ROMs.

I didn't get a complete swap but the rep I talked too said that if you return your phone two or more times for warranty you can choose another phone per T-mobile policy. I had one warranty swap and a battery issue, the battery issue didn't qualify but if you have done two or more warranty exchanges you can get any other phone of "similar" specs for free. You just have to trade in the old phone.
Call 611 and say cancel when the computer answers. The person you talk to will be loyalty or retention or whatever they call it. They can do almost anything for you. Be nice and explain how much the Vibrant sux and how you want something done about it. They will be more than happy to take care of it for you.
Call me crazy, but I went in to AT&T today and swapped them out. I was really interested in having a physical keyboard, and was much more impressed with the build quality of the LG.

I know what you mean, I came from a Galaxy S Vibrant to the Quantum and the LG blows the Vibrant out of the water in terms of build quality, the Vibrant felt like a cheap toy in comparison.
Yea I'm really loving the keyboard. Probably the best one I've used on a mobile phone yet. Overall solid build with just the right amount of heft.

I didn't play with it as long as i wanted. But how is the keyboard, as far as a fast typer?. Example if you slide your finger across the keyboard. The asdfghjkl; how well does it pick up. Do it leave some letters out? Hope you can make out what im Trying to ask lol. I hope it has a better keyboard than lets say some issues with the epic 4g keyboard.

The only thing I can compare it to are portrait keyboards like a Treo - but it's good for a wider keyboard.

it picks up letters without a problem, but i find the keys a little too spaced and the FN/caps buttons don't illuminate, shows up on screen...Still very satisfied with the Quantum, it's very fast in comparisson to my 8925, but i like the tilt keyboard better.

Given that you first used the Focus, how exactly does the Quantum's 3.5" TFT display stand up to the Focus's 4" Super AMOLED?
The Quantum stands out to me for some reason and one of the only real concerns I have is how much I'm giving up on the screen front if I go with the Quantum. Did you feel like you downgraded on the display when you booted up the Quantum?

Short answer, I do not feel like I downgraded.
Long answer - while the SAMOLED's look great, they have their shortcomings. They're 16-bit only, so there is banding (noticeable, given the size.) Their battery life isn't spectacular, but that could potentially be due to the size of the battery. Since the resolution isn't different, things tend to look sharper on the 3.5" - also, brightness is all personal preference. I thought the SAMOLED was way too bright for me.

Does the battery life on the LG compare to the Focus? The Focus seems to have great battery life so I don't to give that up if I switch. I am mainly concerned with the sound quality of the Focus. Also, I am worried they won't be able to find a good SD Card for the phone. I think the Focus is the only phone that can combine two different types of memory (NAND and SD-card). I am not sure the OS can handle the speed differential without a software patch to slow down the reads/writes of the NAND so there is no difference between it and the SD-Card.
I saw in the MobileTechReview.com review that the screen sharpness is not that good. What are your thoughts?
Also, how is the sound quality of the phone? Is the speaker loud? Does the earpiece have enough volume?

After reading many of the reviews on the at&t WP7 offerings I thought what I wanted was the Samsung Focus.
Last week end I spent a couple of hours playing with the phones in the AT&T store. I currently have an htc Fuze and I wanted to stay with htc, but after playing with the Surround I was disappointed with the speakers. The heft was not worth it for the sound.
There are many in my family who are of the iPhone faithful and I have played with their devices many times and am able to type with their on screen keyboards without much trauma. The reviews said the Focus keyboard was as good as the iPhone. The Focus was fun to play with; I liked the 4 inch screen, but my fat fingers could not work the on screen keyboard. I spent quite a while trying to type in both portrait and landscape and I had difficulty getting even one word right. Unfortunately, Focus is out.
At first the LG was of no interest because of the small 3.5 inch screen; I didn't even realize it had a slide out keyboard. I wanted an AT&T WP7 device and the first two, after playing with them for a while, simply were not going to work. When I picked up the LG Quantum the build quality was obvious from the first touch. It felt perfect! To my surprise, I pushed on the case and out popped this very smooth hard keyboard. I was hoping that I could graduate from a hard keyboard after using my kid's iPhones, but after sliding out the LG keyboard I easily typed out a paragraph with no errors! It even has arrow keys which I was unable to find on the soft keyboard which made the much needed editing even more frustrating. I loved the feel of the LG!
After reading many online reviews and a couple of hours of utube videos, I ordered the LG Quantum for $80 from CellularDeals.com. I am now eagerly awaiting its delivery...
is there an app on the quantum that'll let you use the camera flash as a flashlight?
I saw a comment somewhere that indicated there was, but didn't specify if it was homebrew or not.

I now have my Quantum; the screen is the same size as an iPhone and not many iOS users complain about its size.
It seems that sometimes the screen is unresponsive, tap, tap, and nothing happens. I didn't notice it in the att store, but I do now. It may be my inexperience with a full capacitive touch screen, but, for example, if I touch the little arrow on the Home screen to access the app list, nothing happens. I have to swipe the screen to the left instead. The other arrow works intermittently also.
If anyone else has experience a similar unresponsive touch screen, please comment. I could be my unit needs to be replaced.
hey all! i thought id throw in my .02, as i won a quantum, and it arrived the other day! FWIW; i have worked for at&t for well over a decade, and couldn't begin to list the devices that i've had in my posession. however i can say that in 3 years i've rotated through an iphone3g, htc tilt 2, htc aria (which i still am using), samsung captivate, and now the lg. let me state for the record that i'm not a fan of lg phones. in fact i was rather disapointed to find that the quantum was the device i "won", as it was not my first (or second) choice if i were to purchase a wm7 device new. that opinion changed the moment i held, and fired, this beauty up. its nothing short of solid, well built, and highly functional.
this device is as responsive as any other capatacitive screen device ive owned yet...and maybe more so. typing on this device screen is accurate, and percise, even without the haptic feedback some devices offer. i do miss this option, but its not a deal breaker. the color is richer than i expected, considering its not the samoled screens some other devices offer. its size seemed to be a draw back at first glance, compaired to the smasung and htc, but has quickly become a non issue. the coating on the screen is oil phobic, like the iphone3gs, and cleans up quickly. summary: very impressed!
the keyboard...oh the keyboard...
ive never really liked having a physical keyboard. maybe ive become spoiled over the years; maybe since my first "smart phone" (htc sx66), nobody seemed to make one that felt solid. well, ive changed my tune. from the first solid "snap" of the board for service to my fingers, ive been a convert. this is not the crap lg keyboard they have loaded in their other devices. this one is clearly their way of stepping up to the plate, and showing that lg can, in fact, compete in the highly competitive smartphone device market. IMO, the addition of the function and caps buttons away from the main board body seem to make sense, and were a welcome addition. it seems mine dosent have the issue ive read here of a uneven back light. i was able to text in the darkness of my favoriate tavern last night without fuss. all the buttons lit evenly and just bright enough for my aging eyes to see without being over saturated, or needing to squint. granted, it darkenes a bit quick for my liking, im sure future wm7 updates will open more posibilities to adjust this. summary: quite impressed.
call clairity, speaker volume, bluetooth connectivity and battery life are all (mostly)exceeding my expacations. i say "mostly" because the battery seems to not quite make it a full day yet on a full charge. but to be fair, none of the devices i listed above ever really made it on a full charge from bell to bell. ive noticed its network strength is as strong as my aria is, and better than my iphone was (shocker). mulitiple bleutooth devices were added, and used without so much as a wimper. i would like a bit more sound volume (because im a touch deaf in one ear), or at least some sort of equalizer function...but thats more wm7 than lg. summary: really damn impressed!
the size, weight and build quality have (obviously) made me change my mind about lgs ability to produce a viable device that will likely see much use from me before it gets replaced...or should i say "upgraded"? good, solid and dense; it dosent feel like a toy that will crumple under my usage, or break if i get a bit carried away. it feels like a productivity tool...which is exactly how i intend to use it!
I hope this helps provide some perspective...and slightly more than .02!

My Quantum was delivered on 7 December and last night, 20 December, was only the fourth charge including the first one out of the box. Last night I talked with my brother in Oregon for about three hours and the little battery icon was pretty small.
My wife is using the Quantum most of the time and her usage is lower than mine, but she makes and receives calls all day, does a few text messages and when we are driving around, every time she sees blue lights or hears a siren she goes onto her favorite websites, the sheriff’s scanner and fire rescue site. She has her favorite websites pinned to the home screen at the bottom and can logon in seconds anytime with a slid and a tap.
Because of a posting mishap, it is now after 11pm 22 December and the battery icon still says the Quantum has about 1/3 charge after two days of use.

so, did you notice phone get too hot when charged ?
I did not have the HTC surround long enough to charge it more than 2x. My LG Quantum does not get hot during charging.
I had to charge my Tilt 2 every day since I use outlook with exchange and the connection is always open. I have the same setup with the Quantum and only charge it every 2-3 days.
So in the past the SGS vibrates just fine during the morning Alarms as my wake up alarm clock, and it staid at its place, the vibration was rather weak.
Now using the SNS the difference is quite huge, this morning i left it vibrating, and the whole phone "walked" vibrated off a drawer top far from the bed (to force myself to go to shut it off to wake up ) and the phone smashed against the floor good thing it was carpet
the USB port survived some how, but the USB cable is dead
... i was rolling deliciously in bed thinking it wont go anywhere like the old SGS did bad assumption & lesson learned, better wake up to catch the phone before it walks off on you
SNS vibrates really good compared to SGS
Funny because my wife said the same thing. No pun intended, she really said the same thing you did. I do have to agree as well. I used to miss calls on my Vibrant when in vibrate mode while on my hip but so far my NS has yet to fail me.

Do you mean the earpiece speaker or the speakerphone speaker?
I have every iPhone model ever made in my possession, as well as several Android devices and a few more I've tested. In my opinion, the Nexus S has the loudest, easiest to hear speakerphone speaker of any device I've owned, with the possible exception of the Motorola Razr (which was loud enough to wake the dead).
I can use the NS on speakerphone speaker in the center console of my car while driving and hear just fine...other phones not so well.
Since I haven't done side-by-side tests with a decibal meter, take that opinion with a grain of salt.
As for the earpiece speaker, I never talk on the phone that way, so I have no experience to compare with.
I am stock ROM, but I doubt a custom ROM is to the point of messing with speaker volumes this early in the game.

I have noticed this as well next to my Vibrant. The Vibrant is on a custom rom so stock to stock I don't known. The earpiece is great but the speaker could be louder. Reminds me of the N1. That had a terrible speaker but it was HTC. Most of them are terrible in that aspect.
After a week of owning the One M8 I am pretty happy with it, I'd say very happy actually. Not fair, but the comparisons are against my previous phone, the Galaxy S4. I was heavily considering the S5 on ATT, but ATT is screwing S5 owners, no root, and doubtful ever to see custom recovery for ROM's.
Pros;
- Screen is awesome, very crisp and sharp, with realistic colors, looks extremely detailed. After my S4's AMOLED, this is a refreshing change. Plus outdoors it looks night and day better than the S4 screen.
- Crazy smooth fast. The M8 is Star Trek warp speed fast compared to the S4 which would be current rocket technology fast. Plus TW on the S4 would lag or pause for a second or two in some apps, never get anything like that on the M8.
- Sense 6 is very nice, compared to Touchwiz, it looks more professional, nice Black / White / Blue theme and design to Sense 6, more of a minimalistic look. I still think stock Android is the best, but Sense 6 is a very close second. And Touchwiz is last place of all UI's to me.
- Battery life on the M8 is off the charts AMAZING, I mean like really good, maybe even 50% better then my S4. This thing almost lasts as long as my old Note 2 battery.
- Speakers, I wasn't ever really looking for great speakers in a cell phone before, never thought about it. But wow these are crazy good, loud and very clear sound. YouTube videos and music sound awesome. Really wasn't expecting to like the speakers as much as I do.
- Development friendly, I am rooted, custom Recovery, S-Off, and running a custom stock ROM. And I have the option to install the GPE ROM of the M8, so can always be on the latest Android OS if I want for years now.
Cons;
- Heavy weight, not a fan of the heavier feel of this M8, compared to my old S4 which was feather light. The S4 in gym shorts was barely noticeable, where the M8 feels like a brick.
- Curved back not cool, I like flat backs on a phone, to rest on a desk, and use it while laying down on the table. Can't really do that with the M8. I like a small thin flat case around my phone, not curved.
- Accessories, not nearly as many cases available for the M8, as there are for the iPhone or Galaxy line.
- LED Notification light on the S4 is better, bigger and brighter. The M8 has this tiny little flashing dot hiding inside the speaker grille.
- Not waterproof like the new S5, which would be nice.
Overall I really like this M8, just need to find that right case. But the S5 still looks nice too, but with no root and no ROM's for the S5 that is a big deal for me. I couldn't handle a stock carrier version S5 with no customization or option to debloat it. But the lighter feel, and flat back is nice for the S5.
At the end of the day there is no perfect phone. I think a combination of the S5 + M8 = perfect phone. Sense 6 + S5 screen + metal design in the shape of the old smaller S4 size + waterproof. Then I woke up

I have the S4 and I don't like it because of the plastic and now with knox I can't root/flash roms anymore so my phone just idles most of the time..
Also I had a problem where the adhesive between the LCD and screen started coming loose, in my pocket, Samsung won't replace it, I even contacted them directly but they said ANY damage to the screen is not under warranty, although the warranty booklet says something else.
Also my screen got scratched in the service center (see pic).
Originally I was deciding between the S4 and the original One, but went with the S4 because "everybody" was rocking one, well I don't know why Samsung devices are so popular, in my opinion they are okay, but not worth the money at release.
I'm getting the M8 tomorrow! I'll post my thoughts as well.
Btw, as someone who does take some photos, will I be disappointed by the camera? The S4 is 100% good enough for me, I actually even prefer my Lumia 800 camera because of the bokeh and feel.
Agree With almsot everything. though I put the HTC logo/bar and horrible sleep button in the cons.

Yeah that's probably the only thing that I don't really like on this phone, the LED notification. If it wasn't for the good speakers telling you a notification came in you'd never notice it until you unlock the phone again for whatever reason.
Not the worst thing in the world though.
As for the waterproof, I did see some videos on youtube where they tossed in water and it held up nice enough even though it isn't officially rated as "waterproof". I won't test it out on my own though...:cyclops:

I hardly notice the bar anymore...
I also got pretty used to where all the buttons are regardless of the fact that I don't usually press the power button to turn of the screen, just leave it to auto lock. :good:
The only thing that annoys me about the M8 is the position of the headphone jack, why oh why did HTC change, it was perfectly fine where it was, Asides from that it's a brilliant phone and worthy contender for phone of the year 2014, although the new One plus one looks a beast and amazing price, but the build quality and boom sound should win it for HTC again.

This is definitely something I agree with, the "horrible sleep button" part. I've run my finger over it a few times, and it noticeably sways in place. If you press the edge of your nail on one side of the button, the other side slides upwards, and it just doesn't sit still and feels very loose. Absolutely HATE it. It's going to be hard going for another phone after the M8 though, unless it has similar "Motion Launch Gestures". Even though it's more of just a usage convenience, I'm almost addicted to how great it is to turn the phone on by just tapping on the screen.
Also, the curved back actually feels pretty nice in the hand, but I'd probably like it more if it had a flat back too. That, and if it was less slippery (though I'm trying to look around for a good skin to put on the back so it won't be as slippery). Also, I wish there was like some kind of a separator between the volume up/down buttons (either a gap or a little elevated line), and that you could put a lock screen widget onto your, uhh...home lock screen. Right now, it always open to the default HTC lock screen (unless I'm being stupid and missing something. If someone can point me in the direction of changing that, I'd be really glad), but those are kinda tiny nitpicks.
Not really waterproof but still "waterspray" proof (ip x3).
The S5 is just protected against temporarly in water dives, the Z2 permanent.
Also... the M8 survived 30+ minutes inside a water bowl. and nothing happened on it.
In any halfway realistic scenario, the ip 58/67 will have zero difference. Noone throws his phone into a swimming pool tbh, or goes diving with it.
If i would ever go diving, and wanting to shoot those rare awesome pictures, i would get a professional camera for these moments.
Is the One M8 " water spray proof ". If so that's cool. Would that mean protection against rain drops or light mist ?

I just replaced my M8, my other one had a loose power button and good volume keys.(wasn't the reason I had it replaced). This one has a perfect power button. Like really. I've never felt a power button this perfect before. And the loosest volume keys ever.... Sigh.
This power button though... There's like no give side to side until you press it. I'm actually amazed.

I've never really been worried about getting light rain drops on my phone. The only time I really see it being a problem is when it's pouring. Nothing bad water related has ever happened to any of my phones

Only fault I can give it is the power button. It still boggles my mind as to why it wasn't placed on the left or on the side and volume keys moved to the other side.
I love that HTC decided to reintroduce external memory and they can be forgiven for not giving us hot swapping of memory/sim cards.
Also after being with Samsung for 3 years I'm glad to see HTC is still developer friendly

I agree with your weight comment. I have a Seidio surface with kickstand case (blue is beautiful, the pictures don't show you the wonderful pearlescent finish, which really pops), a glass screen protector and this unit is HEAVY compared to my feather light S2. Sound was the key driver of my purchase. I bought my wife an M7 for her birthday and have lusted after her speakers ever since. This in my mind outweighed the lackluster camera. The screen is great, but the great thing about this LCD springs from how bad my AMOLED S2 screen was. It has severe screen burn in issues. I was always babying it and worried about turning it off, now with LCD I can use on screen alerts if I want, and leave my screen on for as long as I want.
You are right about KNOX. That killed ANY Samsung product for me. Even though I hate begging mommy HTC to give me a code to unlock the device I just paid them $750 for, KNOX is orders of magnitude worse. These are our devices, period. I guess if you live in the dying empire, addicted to an ever deepening credit spiral, carriers may have the right to somehow control the device, and your behaviour, until the end of the contract. However, those of us who do flash occasionally know a new ROM really gives an old device renewed vigour, so the ability to do to our devices whatever we wish is an absolute must over the typical contract period of two years.
Just a slight correction, I don't believe GPE will give updates for an eternity (the impossible to service battery, 2/10 iFixit score tells all you need to know about the inevitable end of life of our device). The GPE ROM update is still provided by HTC, so we are, I believe, at their mercy for however long they see fit to officially support the device.
Only thing that's quite awfull for me is the muscle ache in left arm after holding it in my hand in the morning, cause it's much heavier than my old SGS3

Erm. The power button would definitely have a better home on the left side (and it feels really loose on mine, so that bothers me too), but the volume keys are on the right side because if you hold your phone normally, in portrait, you can press them with your thumb. Having owned an iPhone 5 as my previous phone before this one, I did get used to the placement of the volume keys on the left (as just getting used to it is what every one of these "why is button X in position Y" complaints can be explained away with), but I think it's better this way overall. I mean, sure, you can use the volume keys with your pointer or middle finger(s), but using the thumb's easier (at least I think so, and I reckon a lot of other people do too).

Yeah I also like the volume keys where they are. I hold the phone in my right hand so it's much easier, only problem for me though... I'm not entirely used to it yet, I tend to press the volume down button on a frequent basis by accident, it doesn't help that the volume keys are so sensitive either but like you mentioned, it just takes some getting used to. Though I'm not saying that sensitive volume rockers are a bad thing, I think it's awesome...
Power button, they probably could have put it where the SDCard slot is and you could quickly turn it off with just a thumb slide but, I also like it where it's at now so. It's out of the way and prevent continious accidental locks while you're busy, which I can easily see happening if you take into consideration that I still accidentally press the volume down button
I don't really understand the complaints though, if they pick up the device they could unlock it with power button almost instantly before they even manouvre it into their hand for use...Else what's wrong with a quick swipe from the bottom to top to take you to last screen worked in? For the turning off...well if you're going to put it down anyways what difference does it make HOW you press the button, the thing is going on the table anyways and if you're lazy and read with the device flat on the surface you'll end up pressing the power button from the front side(Device facing up) with an index finger anyways...
Oh well, to each his own I suppose.
Like I said though the only MAJOR complaint I have is with the darn LED notification. Perhaps if they could just have increased the size of the LED slightly so that it could shine through more grill holes it would have been better but it's effectively a single grill hole notification with hard to notice colors on the LED in some instances. :silly: It's fine though the speakers make up for it somehow by clearly and loudly notifying you of an incoming mail, message etc so...

Yeah, a fair argument someone could bring up to me that I fully agree with is that the volume buttons are a bit too sensitive, and I accidentally press them a lot too. Again, I wish they were separated a bit (don't really like them being one unified strip), and were a bit more rigid. I can change the volume on the M8 without making almost any noise, but I'd take some noise when pressing the volume buttons as opposed to accidentally pressing them all the time (which is extra annoying seeing as my headset controls don't seem to work, at least not in PowerAmp).
Agree about the volume buttons. The amount of times a notification goes off and I thought I had it on silent/ vibrate.
