A couple of simple questions. - HD2 General

Hi folks,
I have a couple of simple questions and I hope some of you users here might be able to answer the question.
1) If I'm getting this straight, this phone is quad-band. This means that it'll be usable in any part of the world (this is of course after I get my phone unlocked?). The only thing that differs is whether you'll be able to get anything 3G and up. As for EDGE, it should be pretty much available anywhere. Is this correct?
2) Is this phone worth getting if you do not intend to use the data-plan? Does it seem silly to purchase this phone just for the phone? Or is the 3G a necessary component to truly maximize the feature-set of the phone?
3) How good is the stock ROM? What are your some likes/dislikes about it?
4) How good is the SD card? I've been reading on how the SD cards might be the culprit behind lockups and freezes.
5) Does it even make sense to purchase the international version of the HD2? I keep reading on how the International HD2 can for the most part, use any radio, whereas on the T-Mobile version, you're restricted to a specific range of radios. Is this restriction of range a deciding factor?
And....that's about it!
Thanks.

[Q]Singaporan HD2 On US AT&T 3G

I've read a couple threads on this already but couldn't get concise answers to the questions I have specifically through it, so I'll list them to follow if anybody could help out. I'm new to all this business but relatively tech savvy so quick answers or references are just fine by me! Thanks guys!
1) Bought my HD2 in Singapore, as I understand the radio doesn't work on US 3G due to a difference in bands (which I didn't know when I bought it) - is it possible to flash ..for instance.. the Telstra Radio ROM to the phone and open up the capability? As I understand it theirs works on the US 3G network.
2) If I can't flash 3G radios for the US onto my phone, are their any good ways to increase data performance outside of that? Right now it's pretty awful - can't even search youtube let alone watch anything.
3) Custom ROMS.. I've seen quite a few of them, trying to open up the best performance phone and data wise for my cell, any recommendations? I understand it may be biased based on location/use/etc. But a general consensus on which work best will give me a good place to start. Don't need a ton of fancy options, just performance boosting with the standard HTC Sense works for me.
Thanks for the help everyone, sorry if I'm reposting but I've delved through several posts already and couldn't find precisely what I'm asking for answered in a direct manner.

1) No
2) If you have AT&T try setting up the proxy server for the connection
3) Try before you buy. Hey wait their free, you can of course donate to the cook, in most cases.
Awesome, thanks for the quick answers, I appreciate it!
Aren't the HD2 Quad band phones?
US uses 1900 GSM right? I'm not from the US so i don't know....
BUt if it is Quad band, shouldn't it work in the US as well? Unless 3G is a different thing altogether. As far as I know, Singapore Phones are all unlocked and it's against the law to have it locked to any telco to begin with

3G is a different thing all together, he will get EDGE but no 3G, ATT uses 850/1900 UMTS I believe, while T-Mobile uses 1700/2100

Buying HD2 from craigslist. What should I look for?

As noted in the title.
I plan on buying a HD2 for the sole purpose of Android only. Besides cosmetic issues, what should I look for? Are there any software updates or flashing that has resulted in a point of no return (ie preventing one from flashing Android)? Let me know!
Get a T-Mobile US HD2, they have more ROM memory than the Europeans. Way better for running Android on.

thanks for the tip. since i live in the US, this shouldn't be a problem at all
If you're only going to use it for android, why buy an hd2 then? It certainly isn't better than any 1ghz android device out there, and some of the bugs (if you expereince any), may stifle you.
You might as well buy an android phone instead since it runs better with prolly less problems, excluding the samsung galaxy s series. (N.B. an android phone will prolly only run better after you've rooted it, tweaked, and maybe flashed a custom rom)
Anyways, other than getting a tmous hd2, that's about it I guess. Everything is reversible, from going back to android, to winmo, to WP7. You just have to read, and be able to know your device.
its likely cheaper to purchase a hd2 rather than a smartphone with android pre-loaded, since many people have had frustrations with windows mobile as the stock OS (that was me when I first got the phone) and are willing to get rid of it for fairly cheap.
1-2 months after the phone came out, craigslist was full of ads of people trying to sell their hd2. at first, i regretted not selling mine the day it came out (could've gotten $400+ for it), but now that I have gingerbread on it, it performs a lot better, except for the GPS, which is completely non-functional, but I'm hoping that will get fixed soon. if GPS is an important function on your phone, I'd suggest sticking to winmo for the time being.

That's just you, man. 90% of us have gps working fine.
I say if you can get a deal on it go for it (in my area, 150 is what I consider a deal). If the cost difference between this and, say, a mytouch 4g is less than a hundred or sitting at a hundred, just go for the mytouch. I broke my first hd2 a couple months ago, and I was about to pull the trigger on a mytouch, when someone popped up with a hd2 for 180. I negotiated him down to 140 and that was that.
Just my opinion though. They're both outstanding phones
Edit: sorry, that was off topic. Any software the hd2 comes with (stock, modded, whatever) can be flashed over very easily. I have had experience with some hd2s not working correctly. They get slow, laggy, start force closing, etc when running android, but this isn't something you can "look out for". Just have to find out I guess.

Hi there. Yes, you bring up a very good question. The reason why is because I am a T-mobile user with a very old, grandfathered $3 unlimited data plan. However, this data plan only works for certain phones, HD2 being one of them. The Nexus One works with the data plan as well, but I sold it after getting tired of its multi-touch issues.

Thank you. So there are no radio flashes that will send you over to dead man's land?
If you have HSPL installed on your device, no flashing will kill your device.

If you just know how to read and follow instructions, there in way you can't get things working.
I got my hd2 from craigslist for 200 but was only used less than a week. Got everything including receipt. Same for my daughter but was an older buy so I got it for 150.

Oh btw, the HD2's multi touch isn't perfect either. Whether or not the HD2 has support. hardware wise, for more than two fingers is irrelevant right now, as android on the HD2, WP7, and winmo, only enables us to use two fingers.
With WP7, multi touch is horrible. With android two fingers max, but the fingers mustn't be, i think, vertically or was it horizontally aligned with one another, one of them, I can't remember which. Pinching and zooming works fine, even with that problem, however in gaming, you'll notice it, and it may irk you.
With winmo i'm not sure, as I haven't actually played around with winmo much other than flash custom roms for the sake of flashing cuz I'm addicted to it.

Okay, good to know.
Prices are similar where I live, 200-250. I am sure I can get down to 150 since there's 15+ new posts/day

Thanks for the info. I have already researched on this topic and if you go back to my old posts, you'll see that HD2 multi-touch with Android is better than the Nexus One multi-touch. Gaming is not an issue since I don't plan on gaming on my device.

This was only briefly touched on, but the importance of a Tmobile unit is critical for more reasons than just the amount of available RAM. The hardware which defines the radio frequency (specifically, data) differs. For example, I'm running an Australian (Telstra) T9193 on AT&T because the 3G band is the same, so I get HSDPA speeds on a device that was never intended to be used on this network. Though a Tmobile unit would work for voice on my network, I'd be SOL for data.
So, since you've said in a prior post you're a Tmobile customer, be certain the model you're getting is a Tmobile unit, which I believe is a T8585, if I'm not mistaken. Even though you COULD flash Android to a unit with less RAM (as I'm doing with mine), you'd risk not having it work for data if you get the wrong model.
Can't speak to how many times one can flash, but I'm up to dozens of times with various WM and Android ROMs and radio combinations with no ill effects. Well, none I'm aware of, anyway.

Thanks. Is there a way to "fake" the model #? I doubt the people I meet are going to be this shady since most of the people I talked to still have it on Windows Mobile 6.5

[Q] New Tab User: Stock Apps Question

I am getting my T-Mobile Tab on Friday and have a few questions. Based on what I have read, my desire for flexibility, oc ability, and conservative battery use when needed are met pretty good if I use the Overcome rom and kernel.
I am not married to that idea, but it looks good. One of the many tipping points for me when choosing the Tab over the Streak 7 was the Samsung customized calendar app and the ability to make calls on the Tab with the rotohammer modem switcher.
So, my questions are -
1) Is it possible yet, in any rom, or by some method, to make voice calls on a T-Mobile Tab and keep the 3G data capability? I dont care if I can surf and talk at the same time, but do I have to look forward to calls and EDGE or no calls and 3G?
2) What service plan do I need to be sure I have if the answer is yes I can now have 3g and voice calls without a reboot
3) If I can only have 3g or voice, where should I look for tweaks to make the Tab reboot as fast as possible?
4) Does the Overcome rom specifically, or any rom, keep the customized Samsung apps, especially the calendar?
5) What is the best way to do a test of measurable battery life? Some way to keep the display on while streaming a movie or something, until the device shuts off on a low bat? I want to measure the actual battery life under the same conditions with the stock rom and some custom roms. This summer I will be camping and may not have charging capability when the Tab needs it, so I'd like to know positively that the changes I make are really improving battery life in measurable ways, not just subjective guesses.
Thanks
Keith
P.S. I'm not a dev, but nowhere near a n00b either. My current device is a Droid A855 with Simply Stunning 5.1, and the only reason I haven't flashed on something else in the last 2 weeks is because I knew this Tab was gonna go thru, so I have focused on learning what to do to make the Tab a reasonable replacement for my tablet PC, an IBM Thinkpad x41T running Lubuntu 10.10. Just so whoever responds knows, I'm just new to the Tab, and not opposed to gutting an OS and replacing it with another one
1) In regards to this question, I believe CDMA version by Sprint has some tweaks done to it. How good is it and if you have to do switch roo on it I am not too sure....I suggest research CDMA version in XDA forum
2) None that I am aware of as I am looking for the same. However, I have a international version which supports both CDMA and GSM network and I am wondering if I can use a prepaid sim and then sign up with Sprint or Verizon on their data plan...dont have answer to this yet personally

[Noob] Questions before buying

I am such a noob to this phone that I don't even have it yet! I have been looking to find one to play with but I have a couple of questions because even after digging about the forums and searching, some of the info seems like it could be outdated and since there are multiple OS options, it is hard for me to find anything coherent.
I do, however, have lot of experience with Android phones (rooting, installing CWM, ROMS etc).
My main question is how difficult is it for switch between ROMs and OS versions? If I put Android 2.3 on it for instance, which looks like just running an executable and maybe installing a radio and spl, is it difficult to run WP7 on the phone? I guess what I am asking is it difficult to return the phone to stock after installing Android or WP7? I am used to rooted android phones where once you have the recovery installed, flashing roms is a piece of cake. I am going to want to switch it up a lot.
I saw a posting on Craigslist for a rooted HD2 that can use t-mobile's 4G network but I don't see any posts in the forums. Is that possible or is it just craigslist noise?
Is it possible to use the WP7 marketplace on this phone? I saw an old post that said it was not possible but it may have just been old information.
Thanks!
Rich

I've learned a lot in the past 6 weeks, since I bought this device.
It's very easy to root and to run Android: Flash SPL, Radio, Magldr, and then Android ROM. You can also dual boot from stock Windows Mobile 6.5
If you want to run WP7 Mango, you're options for Android become very limited. WP7 requires that it be installed on NAND. So Android would only be able to be used on SD card. The SD builds aren't necessarily as stable as the NAND builds, but are really good anyway. WP7 is also extremely picky about what SD cards it will work with. Cards may appear to be working well, but can pose massive battery drain. Trial and error is the only way to find the right card. I've got a PNY 16GB c4 and it works really well. Over 2x the battery life of my Kingston 8GB c2.
If you want to go back to stock ROM, it's easy to reflash from the bootloader and it wipes everything else out of the picture.
I'm currently dual booting WP7 and AmeriCan Android's 11/07 build w/o issue. It's easy to go back and forth. Installing WP7 and setting up for dual boot requires jumping through a few hoops, but I think it's totally worth it. I love the UI of WP7.
Yes, you can use marketplace. You'll need to connect your Windows Live ID to the phone and you'll get an error about activation. This is where you find the thread here about using the Windows Support chat function and they happily give you the activation code. You should keep this safe, as you'll need it each time you hard reset or reflash the ROM. Once Live services are active, the Marketplace works just fine.
The T-Mobile HD2 works on TMO's HSPA bands, but will only work on the 2G bands for AT&T. I had the TMO version for a few weeks, but decided I wanted to tether through Android, so I sold it and bought a Telstra HD2 from Australia and it works on AT&T HSPA.
Thank you so much for the response! Do you think it is worth trading my Samsung Galaxy S 4G for this phone? I am an HTC guy so the samsung isn't really working for me because there are not many ROMs for it.
That I can't answer, as I don't have an educated opinion. I just got the HD2 so I could play with WP7 and skirt around AT&T's data plan requirements.

Honestly, don't trade your Samsung Galaxy s 4g for this phone, but if you want to experience different types of Roms like meego,ubuntu,win7,etc and to experience htc sense then only trade your old mobi. And for your information only Android froyo runs perfectly on this phone while all other versions of android are in beta! Battery life is Bad!
My point of view is that its really easy to install roms.
I have installed Tytung 3.2a the best one^^
Thank you everybody for the information. I think I may just try to pay cash for one rather than trade my Galaxy S and then maybe sell both to upgrade my phone next year.
I like WP7 but I am pretty well indoctrinated into the Android ecosystem and I worry that I might end up with a handset that has battery issues. As an early adopter of Android, I know how frustrating it can be to have a phone battery that won't last more than a few hours.
Concerning battery, my hd2 last all the day from 7am to 10pm running Android.
So, to me, no real battery problem.

[Q] 16gb specific ROMs install on 32gb or 64gb S4?

Maybe it's a stupid question to many, but... I have the chance to order a 32gb korean version of the S4 off Taobao.com, and since I live in China it's quite convenient. The only issue I have is that I refuse to use an android phone without rooting it, and I've been a happy Wanam user for a long time on my S3.
The taobao seller states that 16gb ROMs CANNOT be used for 32gb models AT ALL, but I know better than blindly trusting ignorant Chinese vendors who usually don't know what they are talking about (personal experience).
It does not matter whether it's 9500, 9505 or whatever, this seller has all the models (even 9508 dual sim), I just want to understand if SIZE is a problem or not... Will I be able to just simply root it, and keep using the stock ROM at least? Or maybe I'll even be able to install ANY 16gb ROM of my choice? Or none of the above???
Thanks!
P.S. I searched the S4 forums but found no reference at all to this question...

As long as you're flashing a i9505 ROM to an i9505-like(aka U.S. Carriers variants) device, and an i9500 ROM to an i9500-like device, you'll be just fine. Don't try to flash unlike devices(i.e. i9505 to i9500) though. Best case scenario, the flash will fail. Worst case, you'll brick the device.
Internal storage capacity has never, to my knowledge, had anything to do with what you could or could not flash.

That would be my same guess, although the seller was adamant to the fact that it won't absolutely work (he even declared that he tried himself...). Though I agree with you, I'll wait for some concrete proof, when 32 and 64 gb versions will be more widely available, or at least until someone comes out with a first-person experience of this.
Anyway, thanks

I don't want to call the guy out... but that seller has some very funny ideas; likely he was trying to flash unlike devices. If you want further feedback, I'd suggest posting this question over in the AT&T forums since the 32gb is more widely released. Further, from my past experiences, I've successfully flashed ROMs intended for the Developer Edition(64gb) of the HTC One onto my 32gb.
Let's say, hypothetically, he's correct--the developers who create the ROMs would be required to, perhaps not by forum rules but more so out of "I'm not responsible if you do this," declare their ROMs only usable by certain phones with certain storage capacities?
I will applaud you for taking your time, reading, and doing research before jumping into the fray. Is this your first phone you've rooted?

Not at all, I rooted my first HTC Legend years ago, then my current S3,and so on. Happy user of Wanamlite ROM on my current S3 at the moment. Anyway, I guess our idea is correct. Not to belittle the vendor's experience, but in MY experience PRC people can be quite often very ignorant, or appear so at the very least, and declare the impossibility of an action or a request just to avoid any sort of responsibility in case the crap hits the fan... Think it as a sort of "ultimate disclaimer": I told you not to do it, so if you try and break it it's your problem.
After saying all this, I guess I'm in no rush since my S3 is still working like a charm after more than one year, I'm just exploring the S4 alley since I bough a SUPERCOOL Nolan bluetooth helmet for my bike, I use 2 sim cards at the same time (1 personal=S3, 1 work=HTClegend) and the HTC Legend's bluetooth is sort of fried So I was looking for a way to upgrade things.
I'll follow your suggestion and try to post in the AT&T section as well.
Thanks!
