Odd behaviour - Touch HD General

My HD has just started some really odd behaviour. It won't run voice command if the memory card is in.
It started when i installed [WM6.5/6.5.x][21901/23112][WWE][UC] Clean ROM v7.0/6.1*****20.04.2010***** however since then I have TASK 29'd, installed a custom ROM and a stock ROM and am still getting the same result.
What is happening is that I assign VC to button 1 (press and hold) but it doesn't work.
I turn off, remove memory card and it works.
Turn off and card back in doesn't work.
I have tried installing from CAB and from EXE and also install to memory and phone, no difference and went as far as re-downloading VC
I have then tried using another piece of software on button 1 and there is no problem, whether it be a stock program, something i have installed and regardless as whether its installed on the phone or the card.
i have also formatted the card (both quick and long) and scanned for errors.
This is driving me mad and VC is probably the best voice control program as it needs no training and works via bluetooth.
Anybody got any ideas?

Phone Pad/Keyboard sometimes disappears

Hi folks,
I've noticed a weird problem on my new Jam over the last couple of days. Sometimes when entering text e.g email, text msg, instant messenger etc.. if I select the Phone Pad option a blank screen appears. If I then choose Keypad the same blank screen appears.
Performing a soft-reset clears the problem as has occasionally closing all windows and starting again.
Has anyone else experienced this ??
Regards,
Russ.
I have exactly the same problem!
The problem only happens when changing between Intellipad and another input method.
A couple of people are experiencing the same thing, but they're attributing the problem to Microsoft Voice Command 1.5 (which I don't have),
I have made Intellipad my default Input method, so I can type sms' if I have to, but the moment I change to another input method (Fitaly), I'm stuck with the non-intellipad methods. If I try to select Intellipad, I lose all input methods, getting the blank box, which only a soft reset will cure.
HI!
I have been facing the same problem too. The blank screen appears and only a soft reset does the trick. At times when I try switching between the keyboard and phoen pad....the phone pad does not come on and it remains stuck on the keyboard.....and again only a soft reset makes it work.
U
This may be premature, but my problem seems to have disappeared..
Yesterday I downloaded and ran Sin's WM 2003SE 2.02 and 2.06 combined update on my XDA II (after having run Mysteryman's update since it came out), and it *looks* like the problem is gone..
And I get proper headset support thrown in to boot! Yay!
Software crash
I had this problem before when I was using my XDA2.. (WM2003SE upgraded)
So far i can think of, the reason might be a software crash.. on mine is pocketbreeze..
hard reset your device, don't install anything, see how it goes. If its working, install 1 software per week, and see which software is causing this..
now i'm using mini and haven't install pocketbreeze, and haven't lost the phone pad for 3 days!
hope it helps..
sheggario
Maybe you are right as I have installed PocketBreeze too on my Mini and maybe it is a software conflict between that and windows.
I think I finally found a solution...
On my MDA2 (XDA2) I have installed Microsoft Voice Command 1.5 and I think this is causing problems with the Intellipad (Phonepad) application. To fix this you only need to disable VC from the Settings screen (uncheck Voice Command), once you do that, you will be able to get your Intellipad functional again (as long as you don't get the empty keyboard, in which case you need to soft-reset).
If I'm on the road and need Voice Command, I just click on my hardware button to call it, however, it will take a few seconds to start it up (since it was disabled) but VC it will work as usual after that.
Eventually I will get the Intellpad problem again (since VC is reactivated) and need to redo the whole VC Disable thing.
I hope this works for you....
Best regards,
Rayan
I've tried both installing and uninstalling spb pocket plus, and the enabling and disabling of voice command, and there seems to be no real rhyme or reason to the disappearance.
That being said, I have noticed that it tends to start disappearing when my "program" memory drops to around the 10mb mark. I've experimented with freeing running memory, and usually if I free around 5mb or so, it starts working again, but this is not conclusive.
I had the same prob. I installed resco keyboard and the problem went away. Strange ??

Softik Card export for windows mobile

Has anyone been able to install Card Export on the Wizard?
Keep getting Unable to creatge startup shortcut while installing.
Copyed the wm5 .cab file to my unit and installed to internal storage.
Andreas
I had the same problem, but i heared that some guy got it working on a K-Jam brandet device i have a Qtek Branded device so maybe its the branding ?
I just installed using ActiveSync, and it is working.
Andreas
I tried to install yesterday on my K-Jam (ROM 1.1.9.3), and had trouble. It repeatedly hung on install, requiring a soft reset (after waiting more than 30 minutes for it to complete the install. it never did). The program icon was in Programs folder, and it appeared to connect to my desktop. It showed my K-Jam as another drive, and I was able to browse files. As soon as I tried to copy/move/delete a file using Card Export, my Windows shell (on Desktop) locked up. That's bad. Seems strange Card Export would affect the Desktop, but it did.
So I said to myself "Self, you can't use it with your Windows machine (Windows XP SP 2), but ActiveSync works well enough, so no worries. This looks like a good bit o' software, so let's take it home and try it on the Mac, and see if it works there". Well, didn't get to it last night, so I can't say.
Final problem: Alarm went off this morning (as usual) BUT no Notification window, so I can't Snooze, I can't turn the Alarm off, nothing. I used MemMaid to remove all the notifications, which sort of solved the problem (the alarm stopped going off). Soft Reset, same thing again. Alarm went off, no Notification window, so i can't turn off the alarm. Delete all notifications with MemMaid, don't mess with the Alarm anymore. Get to the office and do the ugly. I had to HARD RESET to clear everyting. I hate that.
It's possible it wasn't Card Export, but everything was working until I installed it yesterday (it was the ONLY thing I installed yesterday), and everything is working now without it.
Good idea, but didn't work for me.

I was a bit to quick to declare it working, I had the same experience. Just hope the rest of my device don't collapse.

it took about 4 or 5 soft resets to get the prog to work, but no problems since.

Startup programs on MiniSD = Issue

Hi,
My KJAM kept locking up when I turned it on, sometimes it would be fine, and sometimes it would need a reset to get going. I finally did a Hard Reset, and installed all the "startup" programs in the memory on the KJAM itself, not the MiniSD card, and now all is fine.
Is this normal behavior? That when programs (like AEKMap, OmegaOne Battery Pack, and Resco Today) are installed on a MiniSD card, you run into problems :?:
ive got pretty much everything installed on mini sd and i get this at every reset. Its to do with today plug ins loading and clashing with each other fighting for screen space. I find that if i hit start as soon as i can and open something like the settings screen, then go back to today it's had time to sort itself out and all is fine.

Cingular 8525 Device Speed Issue and Questions?

Device: 8525
The first question, does installing tons of applications on storage (memory) slow down your device? (I'm not speaking of running several programs at once but, essentially installing softwares on the device other than SD.)
Second question, the theory of, anything that goes on your TODAY'S SCREEN, should go on the device, however, is there a specific limitation as to how much should go onto the device?
In other words, I noticed that my memory runs roughly between (from soft boot) 28m and an average of 20-25m. Usually the device starts feeling sluggish around 20-25m. It's tolerable but this is only having basic applications on the device. I noticed that once I went below 20m, I'm prone to crashing and severe slowdown on applications launching, closing, etc.
I currently have all my applications on the SD card. I won't focus on the non-today screen applications but I did install those softwares as well on the SD card. The only thing I have installed on the device are Resco Keyboard, Tengo, Flexmail.
Needless to say, my device runs pretty fast. I do get occasionaly lock ups. Lock ups such like when I press the Standby button, at times, when I press the standby button again to wake it up, it won't wake up. Lights are still blinking as if it was active but nothing. I have to actually remove the battery and turn it back on.
This issue could be caused by? (Today screen items installed on SD card?)
I will probably try to reinstall all the todays screen item on the device later on but I'm still testing as to what is the best thing to do. Obviously, there is no way around having certain applications on the SD card but this obviously leads me to my first question.
Here are my current software (there are more but non-essentials are no issue and are on the SD card).
SBSH PocketBreeze
SBSH Contact Breeze
Pocket Informant
SBSH Ilauncher
SBSH Pocket Weather
Flexmail
PhoneAlarm
These are all on the SD card.
What do you think?

To be honest it sounds like you have this pretty well thought out already. You know the theory - anything that runs allthe time should be in Main Memory the rest on SD etc etc.
My experience is that yes, if you over-crowd Main memory it will slow down and crash.
I largely ignore the rules about not storing certain apps on storage card. My only exceptions are Wallpaper and my regular Ring tone - (all the rest on card)
I did notice frequent hangs while I had Phone Alarm installed. (However it has several settings which perhaps could have been changed to make it work more smoothly)
I do not get many lockups but I have run all the usual precautions such as "The Fake Server" for Active Sync automatic soft re-sets, Task manager to shut running progs., etc etc
Overall I guess it's a trade off against speed if it's installed to Main Memory and slowing things down if you overfill Main memory. You find your own balance. I favour virtually everything on SD Card.
Mike
If I had it my way, I would store everything on the SD card. Unfortunately some applications will not work on it, however, some are so and so. It will but it won't. Nevertheless, I thought this out well but I needed to find out if there was anything I would miss in terms of device issues. Like when it goes to sleep mode, I noticed in phonealarm, there is a way to prevent the battery from sleeping? What does that mean? I don't know....
Anyway, anyone else have any other suggestions.
Just got a sandisk 1 gig card for my 8525. Oddly when I press the power button to recover from sleep mode, without the disk in it restores in under a second. With the empty card installed it takes up to 3-4 seconds. Is this normal??
TIA

Does not sound excessive BUT I have same SD card and restores in under 1 second with card in.

I would put ALL of those apps on your device. The card should be used for programs that you OPEN and CLOSE when done. All of those apps run while the phone sleeps. Exit media player when you tyurn the phone off, in case it is playing mp3's that are on yourcard, etc. The whole point is this:
You're device should never, for any reason, try to access the card while asleep!!!
That's the golden rule...
OK so I have to ask. What happens when you break the golden rule? Is it possible that applications accessing the micro SD card while the unit is 'sleeping' (eg messaging software connecting to download new messages every X mins and trying to save them on the SD card) is the cause of the lockup / freeze condition that people are reporting (and that I have too - but only when apps that connect to data network are running in the background).
I have broken the golden rule. I store everything on my SD card with the exception of a few that didn't allow it. This includes softwares that even goes on my today's screen.
How is it performing?
Well, you will get lockup's if you don't know how each software reacts. What is the cause of it? I'm not sure exactly. I know that I narrowed down a couple of softwares that I initially stored on my SD card and then finally moved it onto my memory and the lockups/BSOD (Black screen of death) disappeared.
You have top lay around when installing each software. Some software will warn you that you should install it in memory but can get away with it if it's on the SD card and some softwares will tell you THIS SHOULD BE ON MEMORY, so I don't mess with that. I suggest install as much as you can on SD card and if something goes wrong, check the settings of the last recently software you installed and make sure nothing in the settings is causing the lockup. If there is nothing, then move it to memory.
So here is what I've found out so far for my 8525.
I've convinced myself that if any application, running in the background while the PDA is 'sleeping' (ie the screen turned off), tries to access the SD card it will cause the PDA to lock up.
For a while I thought the issue was related to apps connecting via DUN to the internet, but I now thinks the lock up are related to the SD card access.
So I do install apps on the SD card where possible - but NOT ones that would access the SD card while running in the background. This also applies to where data is stored - eg message attachments (if messaging is downloading e-mails/attachments periodically don't store them on the SD card).
Secondly ensure Active Sync is set to 'manual'. See the following post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-288352.html
When I ensure nothing is running in the background that accesses the SD card I don't see lock up. While I've not been able (yet) to attribute 100% of my lockups to SD card access by doing this I've been able to virtually eliminate lock ups (I was getting 2-3 per day).
This also implies that I can't leave the programs that I installed on the SD card running in background when the device goes into sleep if there is any possibility they will try and access the SD card (some apps won't do anything until you interact with them, some apps run in the background and connect/download data etc - those I can't leave running).
Hopefully the new ROM will be released shortly and will eliminate this problem and improve the reliability overall!!

That is a good summary and good to get actual experience feedback. The proof of the pudding is in the eating or in your case the enormous reduction in lock ups.
Mike
I took another approach to this problem. I like to keep everything on my SD card as well, but I hate the lag that occurs if you put the device to sleep. My solution was, simply put, to never put it to sleep. I disabled sleep completely and I never use the power button to shut down the screen. It's very very nice having it instantly ready to go at the touch of a button. The battery life usage is minimal for me to have this benefit. However, I feel this device is a bit slow still. I would like to find an overclocking program that works for this device eventually.
I was able to reproduce the freezing in standby (i.e. the device not waking up, but leds blinking AND when I tried to call myself from another phone I heard the ringings in the caller phone, but no sign from the freezed TyTN).
I Installed AEButtons (on PHONE memory, not on card).
Put HW1 / HW2 that on single-click / double click to toggle WiFi.
I turn WiFI off, then on, using the HW shortcut.
Then put phone manually to sleep.
It won't wake up by any mean, except soft reset.
Unfortunately, this worked for me every time .
I am uninstalling now all programs one by one because sometimes the freezing would manifest when charging, too (but not always). I will probably end up with a hard reset and start rebuilding again...

reboot loop

sometimes when i soft reset my mogul it goes into a sort of reboot loop, it will reset before loading the today screen
i have an app that lets me boot into a "safe mode" with all today plugins, autorun items and nonessential services disabled, however this too reboots (it resets before even loading the today screen, it resets at the wm6 splash screen)
any ideas? i suspect its some app i have installed, just seems weird that it would happen before anything else loads
When this happens, simply remove the SD card and the loop will stop.
Also, it seems that this has stopped if you have the most current ROM.
heh, i never even thought about pulling the SD card *kicks self*
ive been hesitent to get the latest rom because i dont want to reinstall all my apps and tweaks again, especially when i know ill have to do it for rev.A anyway, lol
thanks for the help, nice to see another chicagoan here (im in the south subs)
Did you recently install the HTC audio manager and/or the HTC Home?
Those programs aren't really the cause...there have been reports of users who don't have them installed that had the reboot loop anyways. I have actually had the reboot loop after a hard reset with no installed programs and reg tweaks...

no and no
havent had the problem again yet, so i havent been able to try the SD thing, but it makes sense since its happenening before autorun apps and services load

I didn't say they were the cause, I was just trying to run past some programs that are known to cause these symptoms.
To flatout say that they are not the cause is just wrong. There is a combination of HTC home and the Audio manager that'll force the unit into a reboot loop you can't get out of.
So no one has found a cause for this? How would this even be feasible if you have startup programs installed on the SD card? I also wanted to put all mail downloads and attachments on the SD, but if I have to pull it out, WM6 creates a Storage Card folder and my actual SD becomes Storage Card 2. It's a pain to have to delete and rename and such especially considering how often the device has to be reset...
Althought the cause is not exactly known, it has been speculated to be a ROM issue. Since flashing to the latest ROM, I have not one reboot loop, and this has been for a few months now.
Those experiencing this, what ROM version do you have?

This was present in the 2.08 ROM and was fixed with the 2.09 ROM.
I installed the latest DCD rom no programs installed and it just keeps on looping sometimes it stops for a hr or two and than starts looping again
I tried re-installing the original sprint rom but the same thing keeps on hapening
Are you running Spb Pocket Plus? There are known issues by the developers regarding memory, battery, power meters in the Pocket Plus Today Plugin. For more info, go to Spb Club:
http://www.spbclub.com/forum/index.php
I tried everything, I put back the original Sprint rom didn't help. I went back to sprint they tried, coudlln't fix it, I got a new Phone out of the box.
They still have radio 1.32 and Rom 2.09 the blutooth works excellent on this.
I've had to return 2 phones in the last 2 months. My first phone would just freeze up for no reason. I could use the phone for a couple of hours then it freezed. Well the couple of hours soon became a few minutes than only for about a minute. If I took the battery out for awhile then I could turn it on again for a few minutes. It was as if the battery or cpu was getting hot and then freezing up.
The next phone worked good for 2 days and then all of a sudden it just died at the sprint logo. It boots up and shows the rom version with the sprint logo than the rom text disappears and its stuck at the sprint logo. It won't boot any further. It will stay on the sprint logo and the backlight will even go off after a few minutes. Strange... I am about to take this phone back tomorrow.
So far I've had nothing but bad experience with the durability of these phones. Once I get it set up properly it dies... :-(
i got a mogul aswell, nvr happened to me sorry can't help..
I just installed DCD2.3.2-Telus (several times) along with Titan_Radio_3.27.0. At first it worked wonderfully. The second I install anything to do with the GPS though, the system goes into a reboot loop. Actually it even started doing it last night without installing any navigation software.
- Google Maps
- TomTom 6
- Live Search
^^ Those are the 3 I've tried so far and all three have lead into reboot loops. I just flash the ROM again and everything is okay (for a while).
I've also tried running dcd_titan_2.1.0_telus and got the same problem once I installed one of the above Apps.
Does WM6 create dump files like in Windows so I can figure out what the hell is causing this? I want my GPS to work!!!!
After the reboot loops start, I tried removing the SD card as mentionned but it did nothing. Keep in mind I installed the programs to my internal memory.
Update: After flashing the ROM again to 2.3.2, the second I insert my SD card that also triggers the reboot loop.
Update #2: With the stock Rom, it seems to be working fine again. I think it's a problem with the GPS chip itself?
After spending the last few days trying to figure this out, I said the heck with it and contacted HTC to see what they have to say. Will post their reply once I get it. Hopefully there is a fix, because I hate this!! Now, I can't set my Spb Backup to run on auto, otherwise I wake up to the splash screen again....and again.....and again! I get so angry as I wait anxiuosly to see the result, today screen or verizon, and then *buzz*, I'm going crazy!
I had the same problem as you with my XV-6800 using the stock ROM and it always would go into reboot mode unless I ejected the sd card first. I could only put the card back in after it booted up. I also removed two programs from the device's main memory (Microsoft Voice Command 1.6 and a task switcher).
I'm currently running SPB mobile shell and SPB Pocket Plus (for the task manager) and it's working fine now.
The only thing I can suggest is to remove one program at a time and reboot to see if maybe there is software conflict
