Legend help questions - Legend General

Hi all,
So i managed to outright buy a Legend here in Australia and its not out yet here so there no local news from phone stores or info or help i can get from friends or family since they either use Iphone or old school Nokia's
I love the Legend, its got everything I need half of that is potentially what i need.
I have a few questions, i made a big jump from a standard Nokia phone to a smartphone. The legend stood out for me and while I have a 10mega pixel camera and a flip HD video recorder, this phone replaces these devices and not the missus owns these devices while i have my new slick phone
Only had this phone for 3 days and theres a lot of work to do, i managed and figured out how to setup internet with my pre paid provider, link the facebook accounts with my sim contact, gmail account i haven't used in years (I prefer hotmail) but that is set up.
so a few questions
1) How do i get yahoo and hotmail emails setup like Gmail (or it cannot be done that way?) its asking for a POP3, IMAP account and i tried Windows pop3 settings and no luck.
2) alternative are there any good apps for yahoo and MSN Live messengers that way i have access to the inbox of these respective accounts? Or better..is there an app to have all messengers accessible in the one app?
3) i have 2GB card inserted so when i mount the storage and place a video file either on the root of the SD or created a new folder and put it in, i can't seem to find this file
4) Is there any must have apps i should have? any recommendations
5) Is there something else i should know about this phone? maybe an option im not aware over and you've just figured out how or where?
Thanks!

3) i have 2GB card inserted so when i mount the storage and place a video file either on the root of the SD or created a new folder and put it in, i can't seem to find this file
Normally I put the video in /DCIM/100MEDIA/ directory. Legend doesn't read Divx file, maybe only the software yxflash can do (you'll find it on android market
4) Is there any must have apps i should have? any recommendations
A lot. Astro, Goggles, webcam widget,etc.etc. There are some forums even in xda-developers dedicated to apps.
5) Is there something else i should know about this phone? maybe an option im not aware over and you've just figured out how or where?
Battery life is depending by yr provider (2G or 3G), WIFI and sync. Try to switch off WIFI if you don't use, switch to 2G if you don't need fast speed, stop sync if you don't need to be updated minute by minute. It'll save yr battery life and elongate from 8-10 hours to 1-2 days.

Universal = PPC or Smartphone?

Hi,
When looking at 3rd party apps to run on my Universal you often have the option to use either a PPC version of the software or a Smartphone version - which one should I go for?
In my mind the the Universal is a bit of both so difficult to decide.
PocketPC, but remember that it runs Windows Mobile 5, not 2002/2003/2003se. Not all apps are WM5 compatible.
Thanks, I'm slowly getting to grips with it all
Now all I need to do is work out how to shift mail over to my SD card and I can stop playing and actually start using this thing
When you say "shift mail over" what exactly do you mean?
You can back up your emails to Outlook using ActiveSync, but that goes to the desktop. From there you can make them .EML files and move them back (I'd prefer to put them into text files for this.
Otherwise maybe you mean the attachments from emails?
Hi,
I want to monitor 3-4 email accounts on my Exchange server. One via standard pocket outlook and then three others via IMAP and ideally would like to store a couple of months of messages (including attachments) on each account so instead of storing the messages on the phones memory I am trying to find a way of moving them to be stored on the SD card.

Just Ordered My G1

Hi,
I have searched in this forum for similar topics but I didn't find anything which answered my question specifically so have started a new one.
I have just ordered my G1 (or Dream (sounds better)) for £35 a month with Unlimited Texts, 700 mins, unlimited internet and 11 months half price by redemption.
I have a few simple questions to ask about the phone and it's functions etc.
1) Ok so I am in the UK. From what I've gathered, the UK G1 doesn't allow you to use MSN Messenger with the default IM Client. I was woundering if there was any patch or something like that to open up the MSN Messenger capeability on the IM client?
2) How do items such as contacts work? Are they stored on the phone or are they displayed on the phone and only stored on the Gmail server? I have heard that the Android software is pretty much "cloud" software and it works in sync with Gmail however, I would be worried If I went somewhere with little network coverage and couldn't view my contacts beause of lack of internet connection.
3) Is there any solution for the no flash on the camera?
4) Anything else you would reccomend for an Android Newbie? Does anyone regret switching from WM to Android?
Thanks everyone

hi!
1) nope, the UK (or RC8) firmware does not come with the MSN application. If you want to have this feature you must flash the US (RC33) firmware. (makes no difference, except the numbering system is confusing as hell but works normally.) Also, you can only really use it connected to wifi, because if you use the MSN app over 3G, it uses SMS for the messeges rather than data (just noticed you have unlimited texts, so this wont be an issue for you ).
2) all your contacts are 'synced' to the phone from your gmail account, after the 'sync-ing', you will not need to be connected to the internet to view, add, or edit contacts. but when you do get a connection it *should* automatically sync up, adding the contacts to your account. You can also add contacts from a simcard.
3) As it stands, no. unless you have a torch handy
4) Can't say anything about WM as i've never had it. I would certainly recommend rooting your phone (don't worry about legal issues, it apparently doesn't void your warrenty and even t-mobile are linking people here to get instructions on how to do it ). once rooted, you can load up edited firmwares, allowing you to do all sorts: adding multi-touch, auto-rotation, installing Debian on your phone, changing from UK/US to Developer firmware and installing the many different themes avaliable.
oh, rooting (and installing the Hard SPL Bootloader) also makes your phone virtually 'un-brickable', software wise. so thats another reason to do it
have fun

Holy Grail: Save mail (not just attachements) on SD Card on HTC HD2

Ok,
My aim is to save all mail (not just attachments) on The SD Card for wm6 devices specifically htc hd2
forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-298646.html
been there done that, the "storage card2" problem is persistent (on this device) even if it remains "storage card" after 5-6 reboots; sooner or later it is renamed "storage card2" and a new "storage card" folder is created at the root of your device where all new mail starts to get stored... :-(
the issue really is that he sd card is recognized after the registry tweaks / are executed at boot up
So, how do we make sure that the OS to recognizes SD Card first before the mail starts at boot-up or teh registry tweaks are executed
i have tried all other things like (without success)
1. disable sense,
2. use windows default theme & remove messaging plugin from today's home screen
3. place a shortcut of SD card folder in teh start-up folder
4. deleted all other items in startup folder which load at boot
5. formatted the sd card as fat 16 / fat 32 with all possible sector sizes...
u name it i have done it .. does not work..
what we need are some serious registry tweaks... anyone interested ? any suggestions ?
One suggestion i have in mind (for someone who knows how to write cab / .exe files) is to create a small program to enable and disable the following registry tweak at boot-up and shut-down a shortcut of whoch can then be placed on the screen.
before shutdown - click to disable
after boot up - click to enable
HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings
add "PropertyPath" value="\Storage Card\Mail" datatype="string"
add "AttachPath" value="\Storage Card\Mail\Attachments"="string"
Regards
I'm crying out for the same solution. My internal memory is critically low. I've tried pocket mechanic which didn't work. I'm down to plain text email with attachments on storage card and I'm still out of room. And yes, I need access to a large database of emails on the go. It was my primary reason for returning to winmo and getting the HD2 after a 6 year hiatus.
given hosted exchange a thought?? (4 bucks a month or so)
profimail runs entirely from the SD card and is much better than the standard outlook email client.

trying profimail 3.26
Hello
I'm trying profimail 3.26 and results are not quite well.
application crash often, i found no integration with today or sense on any forum, and the design make me think to old DOS application.
Good if you need to have a backup of a mailbox on your pda but not very usefull for every day for me.
If some of you have a better idea, i'll take it.
Isnt't it possible with SK-Tools?
http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?sktools/m_feat.html
after profimail
For those who want to use something like profimail to have a mail client on sdcard with sdcard storage see rather free softwares. I found nPOPuk but there is probably many other.
BUMP.
Please, we need a solution to this. We need to be able to successfully save email, not just email attachments, to the storage card, on the HD2, with the Storage Card 2 issue.
???
As said before profimail, or nPOPuk do that ! Not with outlook mobile but this work before a better solution
Supposedly this app does it, as per line 66 on the app details screen:
http://www.tweaks2k2.com
No guarantees that it'll work though, and you may have to hard reset if it breaks something! The software is ANCIENT, might I add. Even on the support forums, the last post was Aug 2009, and the last one before that was 2008 sometime!
To be honest, I would second the idea of getting an Exchange account. MUCH easier, sync the last two weeks or month or what have you, and just use the Search Server feature (built into Outlook Mobile) to get older things.
Don't work with hd2 with french language. a try more lol
The OP is spot on.
Any number of apps and manual tweaks that used to work on other devices do not work on the HD2 and never will unless we can work out and sort the root cause.
To the best of my knowledge the issue is that something is initialising the mail store before the storage card is mounted. Because this happens the device can't find its mail store on 'storage card' and so creates it own 'storage card' in device memory. When the real card is mounted it becomes 'storage card 2'.
Like the OP I have tried disabling everything I can think of that might be causing this behaviour but to no avail. I suspect there is some sort of pre-loader for Sense that runs very early on in the device start up to prepare the device for the Sense UI, but can't prove that. However until we find out what it is and how to delay it somewhat, we aren't going to get mail on the storage card.
I have no solutions, but I can confirm the scale of the challenge!
have tried Flexmail, profimail, npopuk,... (all good rated clients) nothing able to do the job correctly.
Always unable to download all mails and attachements or to see it correctly.
Just incredible to see that in 2010 with a phone like HD2.
Softwares like opera show pretty good html and is usefull, downloading file is not too hard. Why is it so hard or impossible to find a good mail client ? The first Outlook Express on PC do better than that and is now very old.

Do you REALLY have that many e-mails? I just did a test, and switched my main account from "last 3 days" to "last 30 days", going from about 50 messages to 500 in 3 folders, and watched before-after memory usage, it only ate an extra 4.5MB. I'm set to HTML, 20kB and no attachments...
I mean that's just what one app takes, and less than the various caches... Don't know if you've already done it, but moving the Album cache to the card (this one can easily grow to 20-30MB) makes more sense...

Probably not for me. I need to have 2 boxes with about 2000 emails each and somme attachements. A total of 300 mb probably. Not so much for some Gb. I bought this phone for work and want use the sdcard for those emails. It's name is "windows phone" not ipod or psp or ixus. If i need that i know where to find it. A mail client (Outlook in this case) unable to store 300mb, does not it's job. Email means attachement else it is an SMS. Even when i store attachements on in the sdcard, the phone cry for memory. for information i use no music, no photos, no videos, no games.
Wow... how do you manage, sort, search, browse through 4000 e-mails on a phone???
OK, probably in that kind of use it might not do the job, but it's the first time I see someone needing it...
What you're after is an UMPC A phone's email is great for the couple of hours you're away from a proper computer, not really meant as a primary device...
Hi all, I can't believe no one found a solution on this issue so far, there are already about 5 different threads about this issue. Is no one out there having an Idea?
as I asked before: In SK-Tools, there is a menu-point: Tunup->System Memory and Speed->Messaging file\windows ---> to any other path, include the storage card.
Isn't this a part of the solution? You can download a trial-version with this point. Test it. possibly works on a HD2.
The solution is: GET AN EXCHANGE ACCOUNT, SEARCH IS BUILT INTO THE DEFAULT CLIENT!
as far as I understand from other threads you can't get far with the SK-Tools solution because you end up having the "storage card2" issue.
@mazzarin: what do you mean with

sugarsync does not sync my desire with my laptop

Anybody tried this app?
I installed it fine on my home laptop and the client on my Desire.
Now I can sync folders with the so-called cloud online but only independently.
That is, I do not seem to be able to sync two folders between my laptop and desire directly.
This is so awkward.
All i want is whenever a file is changed on one side it is synced automatically on the other side. But it does not work like that .
any ideas ?
I use this app and I like it a lot since the new GUI update.
I think that for the sake of mobile traffic, there is no option to automatically sync a folder to the mobile device. You would always have to download the file, edit it and then upload it again. Have you tried putting a file in the "Magic Briefcase"? Maybe that would be a workaround. If I find some time, I'll try it out myself later and report back.
Other than that, you could maybe try another couldstorage service (e.g. Dropbox), but I'm not sure how it works there.
ps. sorry, since I'm a new user, I cannot post links to other sites, so just google for "dropbox android"
thx for your help but i tried the magic stuff but it is not that magic at all. Also tried several other clouds (zumo, dropbox, etc) as well but they all seem to miss what a user is really looking for = conveniently = automatically sync my device with my home PC (thru the cloud if need be).
It is all too complicated now.
All i want is to be always in sync between my home laptop and mobile device.
That should not be too difficult to do?
they do allow to sync between computers and to share folders with other PCs but why not sync the "same" folder between a mobile device and my home PC?
I'm in the same boat
I can't believe that sugarsync or dropbox just don't do it. I only want to keep synced 1 excel file.
Well, like I said, maybe because this would generate more mobile traffic. You could send a message to the devs and ask them, maybe such a feature is planned. SugarSync just recently updated their GUI. Before that it was really, really bad!
I always inform the supplier in these cases and i received a ticket but i still wait for their reply ....
and this is what they replied:
//////////////
Hello .....,
You will not be able to add your HTC desire as a computer to sync data to. You can download files you need from your SugarSync account to your HTC mobile device and sync data from the HTC Desire mobile phone to the account but cannot setup syncing between the 2 device because not everyone have unlimited data plan.

SugarSync Customer Care
///////////////
Well i think this answer is just rubbish ....
Why not offer it as an option, btw many apps warn about the cost of data transfer ....
pitty, i have removed it ....

I'm not suprised. I AM doing what you are looking to do using Sugarsync and [ViceVersa Pro VV Engine combination]. This combination costs about $60 but I already had it.
If you use the not so Magic Briefcase that sugarsync supply and add files/folders from your PC/laptop through that what happens is that those files/folders are duplicated in USER/USER_NAME/MYDOCUMENTS/MAGIC BRIEFCASE on your PC.
Those files will be available on your Desire through magic briefcase. When you edit a file on your Desire, after you close that file you will told to upload it as it has changed.
On your PC, the relevant file in USER/USER_NAME/MYDOCUMENTS/MAGIC BRIEFCASE will have been updated.
I now use ViceVersa Pro to ensure that the 2 versions of the file on my PC are kept in sync, and VV engine does the task every 20 mins.
Hopefully I have explained how I do this in a straight foward fashion beacuse it seems to work flawlessly. Sugarsync does 75% of the job but just does not sync the 2 versions on your PC.
The key is to examine USER/USER_NAME/MYDOCUMENTS/MAGIC BRIEFCASE
Hope this helps.
@lyrrad
thx, nice idea, but bit complicated though, with a risk of duplicates.
nevertheless i will give it a try as i already use goodsync to sync my home network
I will now add these two folders and see how it goes.

For me the only complication was the setup, and that was far less painful than tring dropbox/sugarsync and zumo and finding out that things just don't work as advertised.. My way seems to be 100% okay, and I have not experienced any duplicates YET. The only thing I now have to do is to upload the file from my Desire when asked. It just works. Let me know how you get on, just in case I'm overlooking something.

[Q] Newbie resources?

So I just got my Atrix from ATT, coming from WinMo 6.5 (Tilt2), and am a bit lost.
There used to be guides and such for people upgrading, but I've hopped on the train so late I'm having trouble finding a good one!
So feel free to point me towards better resources or useful threads on here especially from the perspective of WinMo to modern Android.
But for now, first question: what is the best way sync Outlook and my new phone?? I've got Outlook 2010 and have been building an address book in it since my MPx220! I know I could export/import a .csv but am far more interested in actual sync, with contacts and calendar at the minimum. Preferably free, but if not OK (as long as it works). So far I've tried MyPhoneExplorer but it can't see the phone via USB. Trying www.soocial.com now, looks interesting...
Is it ever gonna finish inspecting my 16GB card? Can't find a progress indicator anywhere...
I know it's not helping but just wanted to say that I'm exactly in the same boat with you. I used Windows Mobile since around 2004 (with mpx 220, tilt, and tilt2) and I'm kind of clueless about this whole android thing
Oh and I could not find a way to directly sync my outlook contacts with atrix either. Also, if you go with the .csv route, it does not sync some fields, for example Work2 phone.

Def. try www.soocial.com It's free (as long as you're less than 250 contacts) and it's *ongoing* Sync like we're used to.
Goofy thing is, Google is said to make a calendar sync (outlook --> google), why don't they have their own for contacts??
Well, so far I'm a touch underwhelmed. Coming from the WinMo world I'm used to many things being customizable, often in the program, if not maybe in the registry or easily swapped out for other software.
I'm noticing a lot of dumb choices and a lot of things that don't give me obvious options.
Let's call it a Universal Inbox but it won't have your Gmail! There's a way around, you setup instead as regular IMAP email and use that app or end up using both email apps... grr! Better 3rd party alternative?
No 'file as' in contacts or ability to customize much of anything about how it looks, what it shows...
Friggin 'security lock timer' setting is disabled when using fingerprint!
Oh, and scanning my SD card *never finished*! After a couple hours (during which I couldn't install anything from the marketplace--though it gave me NO error to let me know why it was ignoring me pressing install!) I yanked the card. Maybe if I clear it out first?
Of course it's much (MUCH) better than my POS Tilt2, but I'm not quite convinced it's worth it, yet.
Your card scanning issue is not normal. IT STINKS! Something from the school of the united nations
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
I came from windows also. Companion Link is the only software to give you a true live sync between outlook and google calender and contacts that I have found. It wasn't free but I don't remember how much. It syncs your desktop outlook to your online google account which is automatically synced to your device.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
For the contacts things you can always setup your gmail account as an exchange account in outlook and sync it that way, but then again it would be the same as syncing with gmail itself.
As for an outlook sync that isn't third party, there is no way to do it other than having an exchange account.
I found and downloaded a program called My Phone Explorer, it says it can sync outlook contacts & calendars if you install it's companion software to your PC. I did not have a chance to try it out yet, I'll update this thread once I try it.
Also, did you guys find out how to set custom ring tones? Like copying wav, mp3, ogg etc. files from my old phone to this and make them show up on the ringtone selections?

It had been in my Tilt 2 and had about 10gig of various files, some WM6.5 stuff (.cabs, apps, etc) and media. I formatted it and put back in the phone (couldn't do anything with it while it was scanning) and it was fine.
Marketplace didn't actually do anything when I hit install until the card was happy.
So far I'm pretty impressed with Android but not so much with this phone. The combination of not-latest OS with updates being locked to ATT/Moto's discretion worries me as the Tilt2 I'm coming from was absolutely crippled by the crap ATT OS version available (though at least it wasn't impossible to flash it!).
My other big problem is that while this phone is supposedly lightning fast, but how does that make any difference in actual use, since this dual-core CPU and nVidia chipset are a small part of a big and diverse market, for which the Nexus S and all the similar Samsungs set the baseline? Example, I noticed I can't play at decent framerate a 720p h.264 media file (.torrent downloaded Top Gear, 1.5GB on class 6 microSD), even in QQview--which can't seem to access the SD card directly (it only sees the ~11GB internal which is called SDcard), by the way. So what good does this extra speed do if there are no apps to take advantage of it? And how many others are going to have troubles accessing my new 32GB microSD because they only see the internal?
I'm also fairly annoyed by the lack of customization in the settings. At worst every damn thing in WinMo was customizable via registry. I usually find a setting each day in Android which I should have easy control over but don't. Example: notifications being the same volume for texts/emails as BS systems sounds I haven't figured any way to turn off... again a missing setting that's almost there: I noticed within text messaging and email I can set specific sounds (including silent) but for the overall system one there's no silent option (which would be overridden by the selected ones above)... Maybe there's some apps that do some of what I want, but having to pay or sideload are both kinda foreign concepts to me, especially for small system hacks!
But on the other hand it's very responsive, does seem to play 720p Xvid torrent downloads OK (though I haven't watched one all the way through), and the voice features are great.
One other annoyance is that while BT links to my car automagically it doesn't link to my Panasonic handsets at home unless I turn BT off and back on for some reason...
So given how much I paid (premiere, non-contract) I'm leaning towards return. Wish the damn ATT-bands Nexus S was out!!
but, more importantly did you get the critic references?
