X10 3G Bandwidth - XPERIA X10 General

Is anyone having issues with their 3G speeds?
I'm sat next to my colleague (iPhone 3G) and I'm on the 20th floor of my building which is in the middle of London (City of London).
We both have the Bandwidth tester from Speedtest.net
We are both connecting to the same server (London. Hosted by Namesco)
We test @ the same time ... He is getting about 850kbps and I'm getting about 56kbps
This is quite embarrassing because I've been going on about my new fone like a geek all week .....
I HAVE noticed that when I choose the servers (within the Speedtest.net app) it seems to think that I am 130 miles away from London!
I switched on the options under 'Location' from within the phone's settings so that it could find out where it was. (I normally have this turned off to save juice) Still the same result tho
Does anyone know how I can improve this???
(FYI...Phone debranded & running R1FA016 but on UK Voda)

Are you both on Vodafone ? Sounds like your phone is on Edge and not 3G. I guess the capacity of the network must be a little stretched in the centre of the City.
I am typically getting 3500kbps on 3G with 'Speedtest' where I am !

I did the exact same test against a friends 3GS, both on vodafone (in syd australia) at the same time, in the same room, with speedtest.
I got close to 900kbps, and he got high 400's
I'm running 016 also.
I've seen a little over 2mbps max so far (depends on location of course)

He's on O2!
I thought that 50 metres up in the air in the centre of London would be the LAST place suffering from bad 3G coverage! LOL
Any ideas on the '130 miles distance to the London Server' part?
thanks!!!

Just switched to '3G only' and got 603k!!!!
I think you sussed it! I can live with that!!!!
Thanks all

I noticed that when I was i Covent Garden last week, crap bandwidth, I was trying to use maps but gave up waiting and just asked someone which way to go lol.
I would have thought central London would be good for speed but I guess its just really busy and over subscribed.

I've got mine on Vodafone, got 2.5Mbps the other day, just tried it again and got 1.8Mbps

Data speeds crawling slow.

I just got my tytn and I noticed that my data speeds are very slow.
When I am getting 3g I get upwards of 900K
When I am getting edge I get around 35-60k
When I use my 2125 or 3125 I get around 250K
I have tried the tytn and 2125/3125 back to back in the same area with the same sim card and I get the above results.
Is there something wrong with my tytn or is everyone having this problem and not reporting it?
I have used the a few different roms with the same problem.
Thanks for any help
Within the confines of my house.
EDGE
Sofa: 19-55k
Front-Door: 90-148k
Back-Door: 80-130k
Upstairs-Master Bedroom: 80-100k
Basement: 8-60k
And this is just in my house, could you image the world?
UMTS:
Does not exist where I live, but I will go over to Downtown tomorrow and run around on the streets like an @ss and see if I can get 900k+ while dodging rush hour traffic.
Okay jokes over. But yes, I notice that edge speeds are not very good, and I have seen much better even on a wizard.
My point is I never get over 80-90, when with other phones I am getting 180+. I have tested them in the same exact spots too.

New 3g areas!

droiddevloper.com
just got from my widget new 3g coverage coming by quarter. third quarter for me buffalo ny YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
^^ bad link
http://droiddeveloper.com/upcoming-tmo-3g-launch-dates/
Yay, Corona, CA. It's about damn time too. Although, if I drive barely 5 miles west I get 3g and also get 3G at my workplace which is in Los Angeles county. It's only at my house where I only get Edge connection.
edit: 3rd quarter, so that means I will be getting 3g in my city sometime between June and September, nice...looks like I will no longer have to turn on wifi when I get home.
Damn this 3g thing sucks (lack of).
If I go the nyc The speed is beautiful. In westchester too. I get to Stamford and get a weak signal by UBS and nothing anywhere else. In norwalk, I get a 3g sinal once in a blue. random times in the evening. And when I realize it the speeds are horrible. Damn T mo. I know you can dish out the signal...Hurry/
I waited so long, but 3Q for CT seems so far away.
When they add 3G coverage to a city how big of a radius is effected? I'm about 40 miles from Manchester, NH and 50 miles from Portland, ME (both second quarter upgrades according to the link). I know those distances are quite large but using the Boston 3G as a reference on Tmobile's coverage checker (which is currently down) it covers a pretty wide span.
Will I notice a difference?
There is a possibility youll see a difference, just depends on location i.e living in a Valley etc, im not overly familiar with the US topography as i only know the tourist destinations of Florida, California and Vegas Baby!!
Im from England,, where Bump mapping was something Cartographers used to do to their wives
all i can say is im with 3G and i live about 40 miles from Manchester (UK) and 15 Miles from Sheffield (UK) so where ever there is a big City, for me there is 3G
Its good to hear 3G is rolling out for you!

Cool, it's reasonably flat between me and Manchester NH so finger's crossed.
I'm from Blighty myself by the way.
None in Columbus Yet
So, it says Q2 for Columbus, OH and I'm yet to get any. I wonder just how reliable that list is.

Where are you from? I'm moving back to Manchester in a month, I'm excited about 3g . I live in Nashua now and there's no 3g till around Lowell and south and it's blotchy. As it is in Manchester Edge is blotchy and at my moms house I only get gprs, but near Elm street and east I get Edge. I was working in Beverly mass and I get some 3.5g out there. 2nd quarter is april - june correct? So I should be getting 3g real soon.
There were quite a few blind spots in the 3G network in the Minneapolis/St Paul (Minnesota) northern suburbs, but this past Tuesday, T-Mobile turned on their new 3G towers. It's great to have 3G at work now, and I can actually do some webbrowsing on my breaks.

Nice! I can't wait for my city to get it. I'm sick of toggling on wifi when I get home.

I'm in Dover and I'm crawling along on GPRS except when I hook into WiFi.

VA now has 3G on T-Mobile! =D Wootage!

WOO HOO Surprise to me when I learned today 3g is working on my G1, For someone who loves to use it as a mobile router for my laptop... and was used to playing FFXI on Edge speeds. To try it on 3g.. ohhhh. =D Hehe. Now to get the Caller ID App since it only needed 3g to make it work.
Anyone use that caller id app? Work well?
What part of Va are you in? I'm in Va Beach, northern virginia actually had 3g for a while now. I think I'm gonna look for that caller ID app now too.
Im Beach, but work in Norfolk area. =)
man I wish I had 3G here in Fredericksburg,VA ..... Ive only been able to use it while in DC......ATT has 3G in Fredericksburg and alot of surrounding areas...been waiting for TMOBILE SINCE LAST YEAR.
Yes finally, I can't wait to get my G1 back tomorrow.
I've been out all day and just got home, and I'm still on EDGE! I've been on 3G all day, I guess 3G doesn't reach in this part of Virginia Beach.
Ok I can confirm this. It works around Military Cir mall, Lynnhaven Mall, and Pembroke mall area. So that should give you locals some idea on coverage.
AND HOLY ****... Im using that speedtest app to test the speed..
3G:
DL 587.4 (642.2 Kbit/s Max)
UL 141.8 (142.2 Max)
While Edge.. Its still running the test.
DL Maxing out around 77, HOWEVER for the 1st part of it it was steady at 30s-40.. Dont know about Upload speed yet.. and man the test is taking long as well. Wifi results will follow after the Edge.
Ok Test is done. (Only took forever.. zzz)
EDGE :
DL 74.8 (Stable and Max it claims)
UL 24.7 (28.4 Max)
Wifi (Cox Cable)
DL 5951.4 (Steady and Max)
UL 775.8 (1001.4 Max)
And man to think I was playing FFXI and WoW on Edge for ages via tethering.. Now with 3G its like if there isnt wifi.. this is respectable. Cant wait to see if it can support 2 laptops running FFXI same time on 3G and if its smooth. If it does, I think I can travel and host no matter what. =D Hope this info helps people.
I get roughly 1k+ on 3G in Southern Cali... but on AT&T
And you still play FFXI.... and on EDGE? I would have killed you if you were in my party... you must be the guy who D/Cs all the time... lol
WOOT?!? What the heck is that?

Oh no. Im on Sylph.
http://ffxi.darkmystics.com/images/Mys071223235009a.jpg
I only used it for soloing or misc tasks, not party. I did once before, was a lil laggy, but for soloing it was smooth sailing. Rem FFXI can run on 56k, so EDGE was still a step up from that. And by guy you mean gal. Tech girl ftw. =D I just hate to be disconnected... I mean got a new netbook which is super easy to travel with, now add the ability to tether no matter what phone I use = instant win. =)
Ok Caller ID Full by White Pages is awesome. It so far only failed one. Everything else or random numbers that called me it identified. And it does it on the bottom part of the incoming call screen and has a call log to look back on so you can later goto call blocker and try to block. =D
My phone was off for about 2 months due to being jobless. Boy I was excited as a little boy on christmas when I paif by bill, and had 3g!! Here in Manchester NH
just got edge in dover, DE...can't wait for 3g to come our way.
Now if they would add a good extended battery. Heh. 11 hours with light useage on network will have the G1 drained.
here in Fredericksburg ,VA today i woke up looked at my phone ....3G was working...called my local tmobile...he said tmobile is testing 3G in Fredericksburg over the next few days....
speed test for edge was about 250kb/s, today speeds were around 500kb/s on 3G.

Sprint Service Issues in Texas

Since the end of November, most of Texas, it seems, has had a drop in speed/service quality with Sprint's 3G and 4G networks.
In Austin, I would regularly get between 1 and 2 mpbs download on 3G, and up to 6 on 4G. After the end of November, I get between 100-500kbps, if anything, and 4G service has been halved.
I called Sprint and they said that the outage is still in effect and they are working on it. I have experienced the slow network in Austin and Dallas. Very frustrating.
Anyone else?
San Antonio has had some issues as of late. I'm not a heavy data user, but definitely noticed a slowdown.
i live in austin and by my house (campus/hyde parK) speed across 3g has remained pretty constant. im in a low lying area so i have no 4g there
at work (arboretum area) i work at the top of a hill and prefer 4g to work wifi. I can normally get 3-4 and have even got 6 or 7 a handful of tests. i have never seen 3g anywhere (on my evo obv) above about 800 kbs. where are you that you have seen 1-2 mbps? cedar park? round rock?
for reference i just downloaded the 58 mb 3.7 update over 4g in about 2 or 3 minutes.
I live in South Austin, William Cannon and Manchaca, basically, and would always get over 1000kbps there, even though I am in a valley and don't have the best signal.
At work, by Zilker Park, and downtown I consistently used to get between 1 and 2 mbps. I never see 1mbps anymore.
Here is a copy of the email I got back from Sprint Support:
Dear Mr. _____:
We regret any frustration this matter may have caused. Our records indicate that there is a trouble ticket open for the Austin area. Customers may experience connectivity issues during this time. We are currently investigating this matter for the root cause of the issue.
Sincerely,
SprintCares
Im in San Antonio as well and it has defiantly been throttled down. you might want to try this little tweek it helped me alot since im on the line of 1604 and service really craps out there.

service around 1604 has sucked bad lately, same with out in helotes, and just about everywhere i go normally.
I live in Houston and I noticed a some what slower data rate here since about the middle of November... I had rooted my phone and thought maybe i would get better connection with it being rooted and nothing changed... I havent called Sprint yet because I have been so busy, but maybe after the holidays I will call them and see whats going on.
per the rep i just talked to, tower down affecting (wouldn't say where it is) San antonio, and a handful of other south texas cities, brownsville, san B____ something. and a city in west texas.
said national 3g coverage is down, probably due to the winter storms, but i doubt any towers i receive coverage from have been affected.
I live in Mineral Wells, a small town about an hour west of Ft. Worth, and I haven't really noticed a significant drop. I don't have access to Wifi or 4G, freaking boondocks, all I have to base this on is my 3G service.
I just ran a test off of a server in Austin with the SpeedTest app, and got:
Download: 139.6 kB/s
Upload: 82.8 kB/s
Ping: 175 ms
What do y'all think, good numbers?
Yea thats San Benito, I grew up there. Its been kinda slow recently here. but I dont notice. I am always on wifi when I get into the house.
Have been seeing the same thing here in NE San Antonio (IH 35 N & 1604) just tested again with 4G and got 3.55 mbs down & 0.85 mbs up. 3G 0.70mbs down & 0.26 mbs up. I have seen up in the 6.0 mbs when I first bought phone in October.
prosper (north of dallas) 3g sucks eggs. 4g is kinda spotty, but there.
I have wondered why service was lagging so bad. I have been driving around Dallas all day today trying to load maps and it has taken about 5 minutes per page over 3g. Can't get a decent 4g signal to stick and haven't been able to for the past month. I have noticed a major decline in signal strength/speed. I use mine mainly for the hotspot and it has definitely dropped in speed in the past month. I now get about 100 kbps if I am lucky. I hope they fix something soon.

There are updated radio's for the Evo and it helped get my speeds back up. I am in Richardson and both 3g and 4g had slowed to half. Now 3g is back to normal and 4g is close to what it was a few months back.

If you are not on the new 3.70 build number only flash the radio and wimax update to the latest. DO NOT UPDATE PRI IF YOUR NOT ON 3.70!!
Seems like Sprint finally fixed whatever was the problem this weekend. On Saturday, suddenly my phone was finally getting over 1000kbps on speedtest.net and seemingly working like it used to.

Atrix 4G Speeds (Denver); need to return device

Hello,
I'm getting 200-300 kbps (approximately 25-40 kB/s) in the Golden/Boulder area of Colorado which isn't even enough to stream Pandora; interestingly enough, at my house I get 1100 kbps but as soon as I leave the house it lowers. I called tech support and they said I might have a faulty device. My first question is: has anyone else's Atrix 4G gotten horrible speeds like this?
Second question: assuming I do get a replacement Atrix, what all do I have to do to get my phone back to normal? I have GMail for calendar and mail; I'm not worried about saving any SMS'; I have Titanium Backup for my apps. Is there anything else I'm forgetting?
Lastly, I've never actually restored using Titanium Backup. What should I expect? How much re-customization will I have to do after I restore all my apps, etc.?
Thanks
Mine did, I got a new device and the 4G sim. Works great now!

I get 3-4mbps on the speakeasy.net/speedtest test (Atlanta server, I'm in upstate South Carolina)
I'm in Denver and regularly get 1000 kbps - 2500 kbps down depending on where I am. I live in a foothills town west of Denver and work in Downtown Denver. Also, my fiance lives in Lakewood, so I'm around town quite frequently. I know there are some data/coverage gaps along HWY 93 between Golden and Boulder, is this where you are talking about?
edit: for me, it seems like data speeds in general have been slower lately all around Denver. I don't know if towers are getting updated or what, but I thought I would share that with you. With that being said, I don't think I have ever seen 3G speeds as low as 200-300 kbps, so it may be a phone issue.
Edit 2: I just did several speed tests from my desk in downtown (speedtest.net app, xtremelabs speed test app, speakeasy speed test) and couldn't get over 300 kbps down. Something must be up with the towers...

Yes, the area on HWY 93 is where I travel mostly. My GF lives in Boulder south of CU Boulder near NIST, so unfortunately I'm guessing that that "dead area" expands into her area as well
My house in Golden can sometimes get 1100 kbps (just tested and got 1478 kbps) until I venture north onto HWY 93... So you think it's just AT&T's fault instead of my faulty device?
Honest opinion, I think its the fault of the terrain... i.e. foothills, all the drops and rises in terrain, etc. Give it a few more days to see and test in other areas as well. I now gotta figure out why all of a sudden I can't get much above 300 kbps in downtown...

I live on the east side of denver and work down in the Tech Center. The best I have seen is 1.6 down and 150kbps up.
Something has got to give
I'm at CU in my dorm and I can't get over 300 either
Im down in Colorado Springs and I was getting 1200-1600kbs down. Now its very inconsistent the last week or so and I see 200-300kbs and sometimes it jumps up too normal speeds. I cant even load a youtube video sometimes.
I then connect too my home wifi and consitently see 8000kbs no problem so I know its not the speed test. I hope they fix this data issue.
Just so you guys know, after I talked to AT&T technical support and the guy at the AT&T store about getting a measly 180-200 kbps down in Boulder, he decided it might be a good idea to replace my phone "just in case."
Nothing has changed. I haven't visited Boulder and I won't until the weekend, but Golden has remained the same (600-1200 kbps).
He did mention that his colleagues laugh about how Boulder is a "black hole" and how nobody ever gets much signal down there. I think this is a result of AT&T rather than the phone... Hopefully in time the network will get better because I'm locked in for 2 years.
I can understand the "black hole" concept. After talking to a representative in the store (I had issues making calls on my captivate during football games), he said it was due to the lack of towers in Boulder that contribute to the lack of quality reception. They've tried to put more up but are usually vetoed down due to the towers taking away the "beauty" of Boulder. :\
