Considering its limited memory, I was wondering when everyone thinks the G1 is likely to reach the end of its usefulness.. especially as android develops and requires better hardware to power it.
Any ideas?
I know for certain this topic has been discussed in this subforum atleast two times. Maybe you could join the discussion in those threads?
I know you weren't looking for an answer like this but I suppose it depends on the actual user of the phone, when I had my LG Vu (I know its not a smart phone) I loved it for about a week and absolutely needed a new phone, while my father has his LG Vu and uses it all the time and doesn't even think about getting a new phone since his does the job.
To me this phone will be good for a year or two before I decide to move further, unless I'm influenced to get a different phone which I probably would be
I'm hoping that Android in develop and improve in such a way that it will optimize the use of the current hardware. Optimize the hardware drivers, improve the coding, etc.
Considering that the Dream, Magic, Hero all have the same CPU, I do hope they make more progress on optimizing it for the CPU.
As long as there's a single dev still doing something for G1, it will not die. And after that it will still take some time.
Just go to the forums of some of the really old devices - they're still active.

True, I still visit the Tmobile Shadows forum on this site and there are still roms being cooked for it.
I change phones almost every year if not 2 times a year....but havent changed my phone since I got the G1 because...and it still impresses friends almost every week....

This is so true. I first found this site when I got an HTC Wizard. When I got it the model had long since been discontinued, but the developers here were still active. With what I got here it managed to put an old phone on par with many new models.
Personally until an android phone comes out with a significantly better processor, screen, camera, and with a physical keyboard, I'm probably not going anywhere.
G1 will die when someone releases a phone with twice the processing power, hardware-accelerated 3D, a decent camera (5+ MP, autofocus, flash) true multitouch screen, and at half the power consumption.

Just Google "nanoloop" to see how long a cult object can outlive its perceived consumer life cycle. I see the G1 as having great potential for achieving cult status, due in part to its homely chin.
Like those above have said i honestly don't see this ever dying out. This was and is the first Android phone and for the fact i see it always being around being worked on.
The G1 will die:
1. After the iPhone dies
2. After all the devs stop developing <- highly unlikely
3. When T-Mobile makes a huge mistake

Cult Status probably not but long lifetime
The G1 in my opinion does not have that much of a cult status potential since today the lifecycle is wa quicker than in 1989. I mean the GB was produced for like 8-10 years! Mine still works and would never sell it or give it away.
I know that I will want a new phone in probably a year (or whenever the next nice android device WITH a hardware keyboard and a better camera + batterylife) will come out. But even then I will keep my G1 as second navigation device? GPS dataloger? Mobile Router? Remote Control?....
there is so much great softwware that works great on the G1 hardware and unless you dont want to run som stupid 3D UI or game on it I dont see a reason to get rid of it.

this phone (G1) is a complete crap, it does not worth a penny, and it is a BIG failure for Tmo, Google, and HTC. it is nothing but a piece of sh***. they should have done a lot more development and testing before they released it to the public. they did not give it to us for free,, we paid a lot of $ for it. and it DOES NOT WORK.
sorry for the language but honestly i consider my G1 as the worst purchase i have made in my whole life. it is a FRAUD and is AREADY DEAD.

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man." Haha. But on a serious note and I mean no offense by this but if you have so much hatred for the G1 why are you on this forum? Some people pay way more for a phone that does less and is way worse than you believe this phone to be. Granted everyone is looking for different things. Perfect example a co-worker bought a blackberry bold and hated it with a passion, his son however loved it (me I would never consider paying more for what I deem an inferior phone). So it is all personal preference, but I don't see this phone dying anytime soon unless another phone with better specs and a full keyboard comes along.

Man... you should probably pop a valium or something. It's a phone, not genocide.
- internal memory. This is obviously a weakpoint, but it doesn't affect everyone equally. For example I only keep about a dozen apps installed at any given time. My guess is most users who have hundreds of apps installed are not using them all on a frequent basis.
- exchange email. First, you have to understand that the G1 is targeted firstly as a consumer device. Most consumers do not need exchange mail access. That said, there is nothing keeping Android implementers from adding exchange support if they wish, which is exactly what we're seeing HTC do now on some of their self-branded phones.
- incoming calls. I've never had my phone fail to wake or ring on an incoming call. Perhaps this is a network issue or you have a custom android build installed? Generally speaking the "stock" builds are very responsive to incoming calls. There is a thread in the dev subforum that roughly compares various builds and their incoming call alertness.

Too bad you have so many issues with the G1.
How many apps do you have installed and how many do you actually use? I doubt most people have more than 30-40 apps installed that they used more than a few times. It has enough space for at least that many and probably more.
Not all phone support Exchange, in fact most don't. Even iphone didn't for a long time. Android does have the ability to use Exchange now if you have the right official or custom build. It is not 'fraud' when a feature is missing or overlooked. If you go overboard with how you describe issues, people won't take you seriously.
I have not read any issues with G1 being unresponsive on receiving calls on the official build. If you are having unresponsive functionality while using a custom build or any app that may be conflicting, then it is not a problem with the G1. I've experience slowness when I used the overclock app, but I had underclocked it to 128mhz. That was MY fault. If you are having problems with the official G1 build with no apps installed, than maybe it's time to talk to T-Mobile and get it replaced since nobody else has that problem.
In an ideal world, everything would be perfect on the first release. It's almost never that way. There are very few exception to this, but they are probably never always perfect either. I suppose NASA or Dept of Defense could get the first release to be perfect.. but DoD has over $700,000,000,000 budget. Also the phone would cost more than what most people would want to pay.. also it would take a long time to before it got released..
For me, as long as the is still workin its useful until something else catches my eyes.. but nothin haven't yet and there so much u can do with the g1.

I'm not going to answer certain inane rantings (see above), I only feel the need to say the following.
Look at the forum for the HTC wizard. It has seen very little traffic since 2008. On the other hand, I would advise people to keep their wizards rather than buy a newer phone, because of what we do here on XDA. It's making the software do incredible things that makes hacking what it is. It's what makes open source glorious. Personally, continually buying new things just because the hardware is better only supports the standard microsoft/apple/ibm/everyotherestablishedcompany method of releasing new hardware with primitive software implementations. Just look at what we've done with the dream so far:
Apps to SD
Media to SD
Root Access
Full CPU Scaling
VPN Access
Themes
Scripts
Volume Hacks
Faster Charge Times
Better WIFI and Bluetooth system integration....
the list goes on. And as long as the Dream remains the easiest android phone to root, it's going to keep extending.
I'll start by saying I really DO like this phone and don't wish to return it. I am coming from a BB 8320 which I also was a big fan of. This being my first wm/htc phone I have no idea how these two companies support their platforms. The phone obviously has some pretty bad lag/freezing issues as well as some weird glitches where the screen will shift and be half black. Now since its a brand new device in the market I'm totally willing to work with that as most new technology has some kinks to be worked out. I have even been looking into flashing a custom rom as I hear this will help. All this being considered I was hoping you all could perhaps tell me what to expect as far as a possible fix. Do you think this is something htc is working on fixing, or do you think I'm out of luck and should just get used to it? My phone is fully stock and has no additional progs/tweaks on it. I remember when I first got my BB that it had some problems with locking up while web browsing and eventually this was addressed and fixed by an update from BB, do you see a similar thing happening here? To be completely honest I have never relied on the actually manufacturer to fix my problems... because even as you said that they eventually do... how long did you wait to do so.
I own a blackberry, windows phones galore (mostly HTC)... and both I have learned to fix on my own / use the forums to fix my problems. Blackberry 9700 for example.. greatest blackberry alive.. yes... but people hate the phone unless i fix /tweak it like i have mine because the OS the came in the phone with TMO sucked... but uploaded a unofficial rom and all better...
back to windows since thats the topic... every windows phone i have had has lasted longer than it normally would have (i based this on my patience with lag, lack of memory, and frequent crashing over time) because I learned how to flash "cooked" roms on to the phone.
These developers don't make the perfect rom... no one every will.. because not even the manufacturers can and they know the phone not only software wise but hardware better than any of us... BUT:
These developers make the best rom you will ever use compared to an "official" rom.
Will it fix your issue.. no idea... i get half a black screen some times on my cooked roms.. but it has happen once in a week... i will wait to see if it keeps it up. But the speed is better, the cooked in applications are better, and the support if there ARE problems is 10 folds over manufacturer support.
All my opinions are based on NRG's rom, using Mar 30th with cookie home tab (which once u use cookie home tab, you won't look back to stock home tab lol) He made my Touch Pro2 a better experience so I trust him with my HD2

But................
Here I am 2 weeks later, I'm on my 2nd HD2 (the 1st one wouldn't hold a data connection, so the tech told me to return it) and this one seems more buggy than the 1st one I had.
I want to say I know absolutely ZERO about flashing and ROMs, but I really shouldn't have to for the machine to simply work out of the box.
I again say with a heavy heart I am on my way to the Tmobile store to return it. I love the phone, just wish it would have worked properly out of the box.
Going back to my HTC TP2....maybe one day I will try the HD2 again after all the bugs are worked out.
this is not the kind of post i wanted to read about this phone. has anyone else had this kind of trouble with this handset?

Sorry to hear that.
Windows Mobile has never been known as an OS that works perfectly out of the box. This is accentuated further by all the resource hogging crap t-mobile loads on the phone before it ends up in your hands. Flashing the ROM certainly helps things run smoother IMO.
I don't think flashing ROMS is too difficult....no harder than updating the official firmware on my iPhone....Its really just a matter of downloading a few files, syncing up your phone, and running a piece of software. Done.
Jailbreaking an iPhone.....now that is a tough job.

ahh! ok,
I Have had mine a week and the device,especialy loading web pages is sooo slow. My orbit2 is much faster and user friendly. I am even considering switching back to it. So much for snapdragon.

...I on the other hand am loving my TmoUS HD2. I got mine 9:00am on release day as well and have had zero problems that were not easily fixed.
(The 2nd or 3rd day...I wcould not access the internet....although I did have data...wierd, but that was fixed simply by changing the APN)
My phone is crazy quick (stock ROM and radio / cookies home tab / and a few other simple mods) and I have yet to have a single crash (my rooted android phones...G1, MT3G, and my N1 crash all the flippin time...yet they bash winmo for this).
anyhow...again im sorry...just wish you would give it a bit more time (though I understand that you probably want to make it within the 14 day return period

I use the stock rom on the HD2 and I still haven't encountered a single problem...
If you don't understand how the phone functions then you will have problems because of your own mistakes... learn about the phone before you buy it...
Unlike the iPhone.. this is not a toy for kids to play with .. you have to know what the heck you are running on the phone and what applications are open .. anyways I don't want to make this a tutorial post...

Sorry to hear. I've had mine since release day and loving every minute of it. I have had none of the major issues that people have complained about. Even so, I flashed my ROM to Kumar's Premium 1.5 and it runs even better on it.
The ONLY thing that I know was an issue for me was the HTC/Sense messaging app. If I happen to open that to read or write a message, my phone would start lagging and eventually, freeze up. But if I stayed out of it, the phone ran like a champ. So, I've simply disabled the HTC/Sense messaging and use the Windows text messaging app instead, and so far, so good.
I'm waiting for Kumar to come out with his Titanium ROM so I can try the device without HTC/Sense at all and maybe even try out the SPB Mobile Shell on it. This phone has a TON of potential, but alas, you do have to want to tinker with it to get it to sing the song you want it to sing.
This is one of the reasons I love the HD2 with WinMo. I'm not locked into how the manfacturer or carrier wants the phone to work or look like. There are great chefs here who have really good ideas on how to make a WinMo device run.
In any case, the phone is definitely not for everyone.
Yeah, I gotta say though even out of the box to a total winmo noob this stock rom is very solid. I haven't even bothered to flash yet, just did some registry tweaks that sped up sense a bit, really no problems crashing/freezing and that is with 9k contacts and many games added. A LOT probably comes down to tmo service if changing carriers to get the phone for some people. In my area, though, tmo is slightly better than att and cheaper.

I have had my HD2 for about a week now and everyday I LOVE IT MORE! Seriously I was coming from a Wing so I guess I had a little experience with winmo phones. I am using it straight out of the box with a few games added. A lot of music and a few movies. Only thing I have done to it was cookies home tab + editor and a reset app. Best phone I have ever seen thus far! Obviously there are things that you need to get used to...but for me its worth the effort!

No offense bro, but dont talk to me like Im a child. This has nothing to do with me trying to "play games with a toy" (even though TMoUSA does market the thing as "entertainment on the go"). When the damn thing doesn't come out of sleep mode without pushing the button 30 times, there is a problem, when I have to slide to unlock back and forth, back and forth for long periods of time before it will unlock, there is a problem, when the HTC Sense refuses to load mins after restarting, there is a problem. I am very aware of of what is open and how to close them (on a mind numbing constant basis mind you). I don't see how you can arrogantly assume this is all in human error and not the machine's. Please explain to me how I am supposed to be "aware" of what I'm doing, when the damn thing barely turns on?
I came on here to express that I was upset that I was forced to return the phone, not to be talked to like I was an idiot...I apologize that we all cant be so high in your IQ group that we actually need something we pay a lot of money for to work properly (without having to worry about putting it in direct sunlight and feeding it after midnight)
I am ecstatic for you that you have not experienced any problems with your device, I wish I was that lucky. All I am saying, is that I wanted to love the phone...but... it simply wouldn't work (TWICE). I did not install any 3rd party apps, I did not alter anything in any way, I always killed the tasks almost immediately after finishing with them (the proper way with the task manager).

I can't stand people like np231. I had to return mine also, the phone lags and going to MUSIC caused it to freeze, scrolling through the album arts is not as smooth as on the iPhone. This is supposedly the 'entaintainment' device that Tmo claims and it can't do the simple things right.
I returned mine also. I bought it on day 1 and used it for almost 2 weeks. The biggest factors for me were the lack of a physical keyboard, terrible battery life and the total abandonment of 6.5 by MS and developers. I also hated the capacitance screen. I went back to my TMO TP2. While at the store I used my upgrade and bought my daughter a Cliq XT.
The HD2 has a beautiful screen but the screen was not big enough for me to type with reasonable speed and accuracy compared to the TP2 keyboard. It was also very susceptible to pocket dialing. When HTC comes out with an android with a decent keyboard I will probably try that.

sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your phone. i was considering one but i would like to us at&t. t-mobile is cheaper than the telstra and tempting to buy. i have a sony xperia x1a on a at&t prepaid and it works great and i think they have the best prepaid, data plan. i rarely ever get any calls and so this is my be solution for me.

I had a lot of the same problems you are experiencing. Thanks to the brains in these forums I have pimped the heck out of my HD2 and my release day excitement has returned. If you want to know how to flash the rom / hack the phone, drop me a line. I can give you the straight forward dumbed down version. I may even write a noob's FAQ that's a little less intimidating than the jumbly ones in here. It's really much easier than it seems. All the posts in these forums can tend to be a bit overwhelming. I am a former iPhone 3g user. I learned how to unlock and jailbreak my phone. That was a chore!! This is much easier. Its no different than owning a Windows PC. Out of the box there is a bunch of crap the company pre-installs on your computer. You just have to learn how to tweak a bit. Don't be intimidated by the brains in here. They are really quite helpful. Now, If we can just figure out how to get Adobe Flash 10 to work on our phones. That would be sweet.

too bad you had such issues. the Hardware on this phone does make it the best on the market. while it's true that things should work perfectly out of the box, life isn't always as it should be.
it's understandable to be frustrated when you pay this amount of $$$ for a phone, but with some research & time you can completely customize this phone like none other.

that's exactly the only problem that I had with my bro's Tmobile HD2. The touch screen keyboard is even worst than the iPhone because of my small fingers and hands. Even worst, the battery is so small, and the OS needs to be developed more than what it is now.
All of this agreed aside from the capacitive screen.
P.S. I think the keyboard sucks not because the screen is small but because you don't have a good physical keyboard like the Touch Pro2.
I tride my friends iphone. The keyboard works just as good as his. It is different for the layout, so maybe that is why you dont like it.
And for those that blame WM for everything. It ain't because of that. If it was, I would have all the issues he has and I don't. Most of the problems I have is either something I didn't know about the new software, or something I added.
Battery life is on par with phones like this. Another friend ownes a Android One. Battery last about a day or so. My old Touch Pro lasted just as long.

i have been reading some on here about the "lag" with the HTC HD2. is this true? all the reviews i read say nothing about it. and i do not like a laggy phone. and disabling Sense makes no "sense" to me...
also, is there alot of customizations that can be done? how about updates? are they common like on a blackberry? will win7 mobile be able to be run on this? hows the battery life compared to the iphone? (that is why i dont have an iphone any more, i cant stand the battery life)

I jummped the Blackberry ship for the HD2 last week.
I wont be able to answer ALL your questions 100%, but I will be able to help.
Lag, If you use your task manager and close the unused programs, then you *shouldnt* have any lag. I am still using the stock phone settings from T-Mo. and I am not seeing any lag at all just by closing the app/programs this way.
Customizing, The phone is still new, and the devs here are working hard to push out new stuff all the time. But the phone is VERY customisable. If your comfy working with DLL and CAB files you can change the layout/colors/buttons/exctra of the dif screanes and apps.
WP7, As of right now.. No. But the devs here are working on it, as well as the Droid os.
While Blackberry has updates offten, it still upto the provider to push em out to the end users, and T-Mo, is the worst at doing so. But you can get all the updates/mods/apps from the devs here.
Batterie life can be awesome, or it can be the bane of your phone. lol. If you keep task manager clean, the batterie will last for wat feels like for ever. I ran both of the Transformer movies from start to credits, played on the internet a bit, and made a few calls, and still had a lot of bat strength left. but if you run a lot of apps in the back ground, and dont keep your task manager clean, you will charge your phone 2x a days.
Over all im loving this phone. I have a ton to learn about it still, but it is a great phone.

I have to say with my blackberry experience with the one I carry around for work, a Nextel 8350i. being the network admin for the company I work for, and I also work with the BES server software. they can get pretty laggy as well at times. especially when there is alot of background data transfer going on to the BES server.
In the end i prefer my HD2 to blackberry. I consider the BB a good platform for someone who wants something that just works, and arent very technically minded like the people I work with. I can already imagine the issues Id run into trying to introduce the WinMo platform there.
WinMo is good for technical users that like to tweak and customize and can live with or work around the occasional bug, and are able to figure things out for themselves or with the help of a support forum like this
I would never recommend WinMo for someone that requires hand holding with anything technical/computer related. it just becomes too much of a hassle and waste of time for me having to support them.

IF you successfully install HSPL, the chances of really "bricking" your HD2 are pretty low. The worst thing you can do "brick" a TMOUS HD2 is to flash an incompatible Radio (one with ...51... in the identifier string). As long as you stay with T-Mobile compatible Radios/ROMs, you should be fine.

Yeah, it has threaded sms messages. And there are almost always ways to recover your phone from bricking it, unless you flash the wrong radio, like he said in the post above. Just don't flash ones with .51 in them and your fine. Odds are you won't even need to flash your radio, so it's nothing to worry about. Good luck with your new HD2. Its the most versatile, powerful phone when you learn to use it well.
Yeah, I was a fellow BlackBerry user. I've had 2 in past... and my most recent device was the BlackBerry 9700.
I certainly miss the days where I'd manage to squeeze 70 hours out of a single charge cycle.
But nevertheless, I am absolutely in love with the HD2. Plus, I've owned countless HTC products, and I'm always left satisfied and smiling...

I just upgraded from a Blackberry curve, and from an IT professional's standpoint, I love this phone. The ability to tinker, the software community here, multimedia capabilities, and the tools built in (wifi access point, slacker, etc.) are a welcome breath of fresh air to having a smart phone.

For this to be a smooth transition you must realize this is a completely different experience. There will not be a lot, if any, official updates. What there will be is unofficial/leaked updates that are implemented in custom (cooked) roms. Some of these will be leaked from Microsoft and some will be released from HTC but TMobile USA will most likely not leak any. Don't panic though, because this is why we love XDA Devs so much.
You will need to read MSkips tutorial on flashing HardSPL. HSPL will allow you to flash these custom roms and a few other things. These custom roms will often be cutting edge so read which ones you really want because some will simply be going for speed, others looks and others stability. There are some great cooks around here who actually combine all three.
I write this because you are already panicking on a lack of updates. That's just not how it works here so you have to let it go. You don't find the same OS version on every model like in BlackBerry or Iphone over here. Older models are having roms cooked for them that include what only the new ones have out the box because many of the older phones here don't have the memory or are simply out of the loop for the carrier and HTC. My 8525 was like that. I'm just explaining so you understand the landscape better.
The best way to succeed here is to search and ask questions once you can't find the answers. Most of the stuff you have questions about has been asked and answered before (most but not all). Make sure to read in this forum and the other HD2 forum because the phones aren't that different. If you have a question or concern about a specific program or rom make sure you ask the question in that thread and not create a new thread.

Great info....i really enjoyed your post...I cant wait to strart learning more and more about this phone. I really lucked out. My local walmart had only 1 left, and i had a gift card so i got it at a good price. I have had the iphone and this is so much better....i cant wait to start to customize it...

I really don't know what to say about this. Did I talk with him about buying his phone yes, did we talk back and fourth all day about it? yes. Isn't that what craigslist is all about? bartering, making deals etc? it was at the last moment when i found out a local walmart had one HD2 left at the same price he was selling it at, and i had a gift card so it was even cheaper, and it was 5 min from my house (for returns etc) so that is why i backed out. I am in no way a "scammer" because of this. sorry, im not.
I apologized multiple times, and he wont accept, so there is no more that I can do. I even tried a few contacts to see if they would buy it from him. I cant do any more...
on a positive, Jain75 was Very good with communication, and answered all my questions i had about the sale. he did take multiple pictures for me like i had asked. I had asked for all of that, because i was sending someone 450 dollars whom i did not know, so i wanted all the proof that the phone was legit that i could get. and he did give that all to me.
again, i feel really bad, but what else can i do? i have had MANY MANY people say "yeah ill buy that, let me get back to you" and i never hear back. at least i told him the truth,....
I just recently came over from a blackberry storm 2 to hd2 April 1. Let me say that the HD2 is a totally different experience from blackberry. I loved how the blackberry managed my business OTOH it sucked for pleasure. With the HD2 you get both business and pleasure.
HTC blows blackberry out of the water to me, at least this hd2 does. By that I mean large screen, plenty of themes, apps, etc. Not the same old tired interface as blackberry. It has NO LAG WHATSOEVER. This phone has all my needs met and more.
Only thing about windows is you have to find roms,apps, etc instead of it being in a central location.
I will be using this phone for awhile, t-mobile is crappy in my area so I unlocked to at&t.
I carry a BB Tour and a HD2 right now.
The only two things I like about the BB over the HD2 are the battery life of the BB and the keyboard. I HATE the HD2 on screen keyboard. Even swipe blows.
But if you are anything like me, it's all about the Apps (quality Apps, that is). The HD2 is my media phone, hands down (better than my iPhone). The BB is the work horse and back up music player.

I hate the onscreen keyboard too lol. I have been trying to find another input keyboard that somewhat resembles blackberry.
Actually this HD2 can do it all. Give it a try. I use it for my business and media. I plug my phone up to my car everyday for media and it charges it as well.
Like a lot of people on the forum, their HD2 has caused them a lot of headaches and problems. After waiting patiently from the Euro launch of this phone, my anticipation for this phone was at all time high, more so when I got my 2G iPhone. After I got it, lots of problems like phone slowdown, lag, freezing, SMS/Message App slowdown, lag and freezing. Weather tab freezing, Music player slowdown or skipping (.mp3 skip? What? lol). Data stop working, disconnecting or won't auto connect. Camera lag or slowdown, Email problems, delete email but they come back, or can't send emails. Sleep/Lock of death, phone won't wake up. Phone resets it's self on it's own and I can go on, lol.
I've done everything people have told me do here. I've kill all task, soft reset, hard reset 5x, taken the battery out, taken the memory card out etc. The only thing I haven't done (and will not do) is flash my ROM. The one thing I notice is, if I run "Today" instead of "Sense UI" the phone works fine, so that means Sense UI is buggy. I've contacted T-mobile and HTC, most recently HTC, I've talk to three different people and finally we are getting somewhere.

There are many factors that go into finalizing an update between T-Mobile and HTC, so it may feel like it is taking a while. Members, please, contact HTC by using this link HTC Customer Service, fill out the quick information and send it, and PRESS THE ISSUE that your phone is having terrible problems. I have link them to this forum and they are READING the threads here but it's more apparent if you keep contacting them, get the message out so they can get an update out ASAP.
are we really having this much trouble with our phones? I mean I understand that sense ui is laggy at times.. but if I remember to kill all my running tasks, its not that bad..
I have had a big problem with 3g connectivity but im not tech in a 3g area... but I go from h to 3g to g in the same spots my g1 has 3g.. I called and told tmo..
I mean granted this isn't a rooted android device but this is a good wm phone.. nearly everything I expected...

Why not?
There are roms that are nearly identical to stock, with just bug-fixes--which seems exactly like what you want.
That's overkill. If I had to do all of that to my phone. I would have gotten rid of it already. The only real problem I had was my phone would not stay on 3G and my wifes phone is always on it.
I'm getting a replacement though.

It voids your warranty and if you for some odd reason when you wake up some day within the next year and your phone doesn't turn on, and you send it back for a new one, and they find that you have a custom ROM on it, you'll have to pay full price for a new one. It's simply not worth it in my eyes to put on a custom ROM that voids the warranty of a 550 dollar phone to see Sense UI move a little bit smoother.

The only real problems I have with tmobile is their bad coverage areas and even though they have bad coverage areas, their coverage areas are exaggerated. It says I should have web coverage in my area, but when I try to place an order for a plan they tell me that cant do it because there is no service in my area. That and I could only half hear the person on the phone because I could hear a bunch of idiots in the back ground not doing their jobs and some god awful singing. And I have to order a new sim card because they said that my sim number must have been an accidentaly reissued number because its already in use.

I don't know why anyone who's apprehensive to flashing ROMS is even here.
No offense, but this whole forum is built around flashing ROMS. It's one thing if you don't want to go that route, but getting on your high-horse and telling people its a bad idea to flash roms because it voids your warranty is a little much.
Most of the people here understand the risks involved with flashing roms, and anyone who really knows what they're doing knows that the risk is minimal, and that except for extreme cases (and stupidity), a phone can be brought back to stock if needed. Unless you flashed the wrong rom and bricked your device, the only reason you wouldn't be able to bring it back to stock is hardware malfunction due to physical damange...and in most cases, those aren't covered by warranty.
Most people here also know the benefits of flashing ROMS and modifying the UI to make it work, and aren't holding their breaths for a fix from HTC or T-Mobile. Most people here bought the HD2 expecting the stock ROM to suck, and knew that the only way to get it working at the level of their expectations is to flash a custom ROM. If waiting for a fix from HTC or T-Mobile is the route you want to go, then hit up the t-mobile forum, because honestly, the problems a lot of you are facing on the stock ROM, don't exist on custom ROMS. The chefs here will always be 5 steps ahead of T-Mobile and HTC.
It's not just about sense running smoother....its correcting innate problems in WM6.5 and sense that can make the device a pain in the ass to use. Its about making the OS and UI more accessible, capable, and above all, less prone to crashes and more stable!

If you are looking to mod your device within the so-called "safe" limits that HTC and T-Mobile force upon you, maybe you would be better off hanging out over at freewareppc, instead of a modding forum.

I can tell you that I had many of those problems and after flashing a custom rom, I've fixed my HD2 almost to perfection, not only the way it looks but stability. Only problem I keep having is 3G connection problems, and by the looks of it, its not the device anymore, seems more like T-mobile's service.
I agree with both perspectives.
I flashed my phone the second day I had it. I'm new to WinMo and was a little nervous, but now I flash weekly (would be daily, but I don't want to become an addict... ) Flashing is night and day from stock and I would never go back (unless it was warranty related).
That being said, I agree with compaining to HTC and T-MO. If there are enough people complaining, then more work will be done to fix those problem, which will lead to better/more frequent updates for the chefs to work with. That way, it's win win. I love HTC devices, they are the best, but when I accidentally dial someone, and it takes me 10 seconds to get to where I can hang up because of lag on a device that technically qualifies to run Windows XP.... That seems unacceptable to me.

In a perfect world, a company like HTC would hear their customer's cries and devote all of their resources and attention to releasing regular updates. In the real world, HTC has released 4 phones after the HD2, and lined-up several others...they aren't interested in developing for the HD2 anymore. People have been complaining to HTC about the HD2 since it was released in Europe back in November....and they still haven't really addressed most of the concerns.
Most of the 'problems' people complain about are innate characteristics of windows mobile....You see people complaing because their phones lag or crash because they don't manage task manager, but that's an innate characteristic of a multi-tasking OS! On the other side of the fence, you have MS getting bashed for getting rid of multi-tasking in WP7...you have people bashing the iPhone for years over its lack of multi-tasking....and when they come up with a quasi-multi tasking solution, they get bashed for it not being 'true' multi-tasking!

Ha! It's so true My wife has a myTouch and she complained that the battery life on it sucked and I said that all smartphones get worse battery life than the dumbphones she was use to. Well, one night she said that she understood that batterlife was worse on smartphones, but having to recharge your phone 2-3 times a day was getting rediculous along with the horrible unresponsiveness. Finally I took a look to see what was up, and I guess I must have forgotten to explain "task management" with her, as she had every application on the phone open and running at the same time! Poor phone took a pretty decent beating the first couple of weeks she had it
But back on topic, if HTC releases an update to its Sense UI for WinMo, it should benefit all users of Sense UI (WinMo) reguardless of what phone it's running on. So even if there are newer models, updates should work on older models. That's at least what happened with my Pioneer Navigation system. There were lots of complains about things not working (even a few posts like this on a forum) and that summer they released a newer model that used the same software so our models got the upgrade too. I'm not saying it was a "Windows 7 moment" but I do like to think that our nagging helped.
I'm all for complaining to companies if it means that they produce better quality products. If we just sit around and accept it, then QoS will go down. There must be some formula where the cost of developement is compared to the cost of responding to complaints. When complaints go up, the other adjusts itself accordingly to maximize profit. Lower complains, less developement until complaints go back up! That kind of thing.
Just my 2 cents. But over all, I'm quite happy with kumar's work. If I were still on stock, I'd be upset too.
This is what pisses me off about the whole issue... we ALL know what this site is about. Regardless, NO ONE should HAVE to flash a damn rom to get a phone to function like it should out of the box...especially when you have people that are spending $400+ for it. That's just plain pathetic, bs and I just couldnt go for it which was why I simply returned mine and got my money back. Flashing is cool, but not everyone comes here for new roms... some people come for software, tweaks or to figure out how to do other things.
Telling someone that they SHOULD just flash a rom and deal with it.. even though roms are nice lets just be real, almost every single one of them has SOME kind of bugs with it. That's one of the main reason I stopped doing the flash dance and chose to stick with the stock rom to begin with. But when you buy the phone and it already has bugs, YES people have the right to complain about it and want the issue resolved. That's about as dumb as buying a Mercedes with a blown header and saying.. well you should just put aftermarket headers on it anyways. Should the car just WORK when you buy it? And if it doesnt work.. you take it back and get it serviced or another car.

Ha! It's so true My wife has a myTouch and she complained that the battery life on it sucked and I said that all smartphones get worse battery life than the dumbphones she was use to. Well, one night she said that she understood that batterlife was worse on smartphones, but having to recharge your phone 2-3 times a day was getting rediculous along with the horrible unresponsiveness. Finally I took a look to see what was up, and I guess I must have forgotten to explain "task management" with her, as she had every application on the phone open and running at the same time! Poor phone took a pretty decent beating the first couple of weeks she had it
But back on topic, if HTC releases an update to its Sense UI for WinMo, it should benefit all users of Sense UI (WinMo) reguardless of what phone it's running on. So even if there are newer models, updates should work on older models. That's at least what happened with my Pioneer Navigation system. There were lots of complains about things not working (even a few posts like this on a forum) and that summer they released a newer model that used the same software so our models got the upgrade too. I'm not saying it was a "Windows 7 moment" but I do like to think that our nagging helped.
I'm all for complaining to companies if it means that they produce better quality products. If we just sit around and accept it, then QoS will go down. There must be some formula where the cost of developement is compared to the cost of responding to complaints. When complaints go up, the other adjusts itself accordingly to maximize profit. Lower complains, less developement until complaints go back up! That kind of thing.
Just my 2 cents. But over all, I'm quite happy with kumar's work. If I were still on stock, I'd be upset too.

That would probably be true if HTC were releasing more windows mobile based phones and updating sense for new models, but windows mobile is at the literal end of its product life cycle, and development has come to a hault. We've already seen sense updates for Android, but most of those probably won't make it to windows mobile.
Unless it becomes a public relations nightmare for HTC, I don't see them springing to the service of HD2 users....cost is the biggest reason. They've already sold us an HD2, and they've moved onto releasing several models to replace the HD2. Continuing to develop for it will do nothing to generate more revenue for them. HTC's market-share is growing significantly by constantly pushing the hardware bar higher every few months.
I dont think these people who flash roms understand that, a phone shouldnt have so many ****in issues. It should work properly, and their is no word on whether or not T-mobile/HTC are working on an update..This completely B.S for a phone to have so many issues..I've had a dash,iphone, BB 97000 no problems..

I've done everything people have told me do here. I've kill all task, soft reset, hard reset 5x, taken the battery out, taken the memory card out etc. The only thing I haven't done (and will not do) is flash my ROM. The one thing I notice is, if I run "Today" instead of "Sense UI" the phone works fine, so that means Sense UI is buggy. I've contacted T-mobile and HTC, most recently HTC, I've talk to three different people and finally we are getting somewhere.
If your device has so much problems im sure it's a faulty one why not replace it under warranty??
Mine working perfectly out of box (i wonder where's the lagging was) i dont flash my rom, if it aint broken why fix it? i just do some tweaks that's all

because i dont want a refurbished phone. I seriously think i'm done with HTC and anything they add to a phone. I will never buy a phone with Sense U.I on android only ones that dont have it. Also why cant they keep us posted on an update. Its kind of B.S that they release a phone but stop making updates or wont make any because Windows Mobile is dead.. Thats like M.S not updating XP or Vista anymore because Windows 7 is out. People bought this phone a month ago so its ****in new in the U.S and their should be updates being handed out..If not HTC i hope they fail as a company and prob will in the future. Creative destruction new companies come and old ones die just like Palm.
