[OFFICIAL] HTC EVO 4G is Sprint's Android-powered knight in superphone armor.

We've been rumoring a WiMAX "HTC Supersonic" for a while now, and Sprint just dropped the hard news: the phone will be dubbed the HTC EVO 4G, will be released this Summer and it's easily the best specced phone we've ever witnessed. The hardware is of quite obvious HD2 descent, but with Android onboard and some nice aesthetic tweaks, the EVO 4G takes on a life of its own. The handset is centered around a 480 x 800 4.3-inch TFT LCD, with a Snapdragon QSD8650 1GHz processor under the hood (the CDMA version of the QSD8250 in the HD2 and Nexus One), and even a helpful 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM -- hello app storage! Even the battery is bigger than the HD2, and the camera is an 8 megapixel monstrosity with flash, that's capable of 720p video, and is augmented by a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for good measure. The phone features HDMI out (though you'll need an adapter for turning it into a TV-familiar HDMI plug), 802.11b/g WiFi, and an 8GB microSD card. There's that still-rare Android 2.1 underneath an updated version of HTC's Sense UI. But... despite all these wild features, what actually sets the EVO 4G apart is the fact that it's Sprint's first 4G phone. The handset runs a combo of EV-DO Rev. A and WiMAX, with calls still being made over CDMA and the EV-DO / WiMAX options for data. Interestingly, it sounds like concurrent data and voice use might be possible for the first time on CDMA carrier in this way (killing AT&T's well-advertised differentiator), though Sprint says that's still in the testing phase. One other new feature is the Sprint hotspot app, another MiFi-style connection sharing number, which is obviously aided greatly by the WiMAX on board and can support up to eight concurrent users. Vibrant or new "project emerald"?

I looked at the supposed two devices for project emerald slated to be released next month the specs are not anything that amazing... the vibrant more than holds it own. However the fact that the devices will be hspda+ or whatever it is called makes me want to return my vibrant amd wait. What do you all think?

The 'G2' (the replacement for the G1) is supposed to be a 'Google Experience' (run stock Android). That's supposedly launching September 9th. So, that's pretty neat. It's said to basically be a Nexus One with a sliding keyboard (the often rumored 'Nexus Two'). The Snapdragon core is rumored to be underclocked to 800MHz (in test hardware), but that would be silly to take to market at this point. The device is also supposed to have a front-facing camera.
I'm interested in such a device, as it will soon be the only stock Android device being sold in the US market (Droid is end-of-life and Nexus One isn't sold to consumers anymore). It will be nice to see frequent updates, and stock 3.0 when it comes out.
One would like to see some beefier specs on such a phone, but what can you do? HTC seems to be building every phone with the same Snapdragon core.
The second phone is basically an HTC Desire HD (4.3") with T-Mo's custom Sense rom ('Genius' button and so forth). I'm not too interested in that heavy customization of Android.
If I had to choose, I'd take the Vibrant with a fixed GPS and Compass. If the issues were never addressed, the G2 would probably be my next phone.

Samsungs hardware trumps anything htc is putting out anytime soon... and im a htc fanboy....
But if i had hspa around here getting 15-20 down, yeah kinda hard to say no to that...

What exactly is HSDPA +? My phone shows it as the network type already so why is everyone so excited about the two newest phones having it if my vibrant and I'm assuming other peoples does as well?

Knowing these phones were coming made keeping my Vibrant a tough decision. I figure if I really want one of these phones I'll just sell the Vibrant and buy one at full price. I'd prefer an HTC phone, but the 4.3 in. screen makes me wonder about the battery life. I think the 4 in. on the Vibrant is a pretty good compromise and I've been really happy with how long this thing holds a charge.

Your says hsdpa . High speed download package access. Wich is part of hspa . I'm wrong on these numbers but say hspa does 10mbps download a second.. hspa+ will give ya 21mbps...
So hspa+ is faster than our hspa... but I never Max out on hspa to even want +....

believe your's shows, same as mine, HSDPA which is theoretically good for up to 7.2 Mbps download speed - that's theoretical, actual download speed will be less
HSDPA+, iirc, is supposed to be good for theoretically 21 Mbps
i'm in a "moderate" coverage area (per Tmo's map legend) and i've seen as high as 5.6 Mbps, but am usually running 1.1 to 2.6 Mbps when i test at speedtest.net

The new technology is being tested by Canadian Bell and Rogers to double HSDPA+, the race is on, remember the days when the processor speed mattered so much you wanted to have a new one every month...

Hsdpa is theoretically able to go up to 21... but we just dont have a handset that can receive that much info... our phones get up to 7.2 same as any other 3g device...
It the same technology so we can use it just cant process that much data... my phone is already faster than comcast around here... and im just getting 3g flowover from 45 minutes away north and south...

I also figure that I could get Project Emerald by selling this phone and buy it off Ebay. Chances are you would not lose any money on that deal.

Confirmed: Bell releasing Motorola ATRIX March 17th

It’s now confirmed. Bell has released a statement indicating that the Motorola ATRIX is going to be available on March 17th. As for the price points: $169.95 on a 3-year (with a minimum $50 voice/data plan) or for $599.95 on no-contract. Bell will also sell the Lapdock and the HD Multimedia Dock but no word on those prices were announced.
Specs of this Android have it coming with OS 2.2 with Motoblur, 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 Dual-Core processor, 1GB RAM and 1930 mAh battery, Flash Player 10.1, 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash and 720p HD video recording, VGA front-facing camera, holds up to 48GB with a microSD card (16GB internal and optional 32GB), WiFi.

You obviously don't know Canadian cell phone carriers. Bell removed FFC's from some Samsung phones. Did you notice... 3 year contract. AT&T ... 2 year.
Think AT&T is bad... at least you have real choice in the states.

As an american living in canada the US has far better cell phone service, I just wish motorola made a version that worked on wind because that's what I use... 40/mo for unlimited voice/texts/data is too hard to beat =)
Still, it's nice to see they're releasing it so soon after the US release, usually canada has to wait MONTHS for a phone to hit their side of the border.

They are great. If you live in a metropolitan area. I'm juuust outside Oshawa, the Wind Zone ends 3 blocks from my house. Not good if I'm getting say groceries and need to call home to see if my wife needs something.
Or travelling. As much as I hate Rogers, my data usage in the states comes off my monthly balance

1) So, can I purchase an unlock code for it?
2) Also, what GSM/3G bands will it support?
3) Finally, no 4G??

Pretty sure you can get an unlock code for any phone out there... just a matter of price. In Toronto you can just go to pacific mall and a ton of places can get it for 10 bucks or so. There's some online sites that work too but it's a bit riskier.
It'll most likely be the same exact phone that AT&T has in terms of hardware since Bell/Rogers/Telus all use the same 3G frequencies now.
And for 4G... does any carrier in canada even have 4G yet?

Guess you've fallen for their marketing ploy... quite sure bell isn't even 3.5G. Yet they label anything faster (theoretically) than 3mbps as 4G when traditional 3G maxes out at 7.2mbps.

Well, getting an unlocked, rooted Atrix 4G from the US will cost me CAD $650 ... while getting it locked from Bell would cost me CAD $600.... I'm not sure if $50 is worth worrying about unlockability and rooting...

It's like how AT&T is doing it, calling their HSPA+ 4G.
I was wondering about rooting the Atrix. The AT&T version is already rooted, would the same rooting method work for the Bell version? Would this only work if they have the exact same firmware for 2.2? I remember when I manually install updates for my Nexus One, I had to wait for the AT&T update to come out since the firmware was different than the TMo version. This was before the versions were merged. So I'm wondering if this is the case? Or does this have no relevance?

IT IS MISSING the 2100 frequency band...aka...T-Mobile 3G/4G WILL NOT WORK. This phone is not a T-mobile-banded device. At best it is the international version...maybe AT&T's one as second best but not T-Mobile's. Sadly I don't think we're getting this awesomeness for some time still. Sucks.

You are mistaken. The FCC does not need / can't test the 2100 Mhz band as those frequencies are used for the downlink i.e. the tower is emitting and the phone is only receiving. The phone emits RF energy on the 1700 band since this frequency band is used for the uplink in the AWS-1 spec. The FCC is checking to make sure the RF emissions from the phone conform to regulations so they test 1700Mhz and don't care about 2100Mhz as far as the phone is concerned. mmmkay? This is not a phone spec-sheet, it is simply the FCC test results.
The phone shown on that FCC summary WILL MOST DEFINITELY support full t-mo 3G and ATT's as well. It's similar to many of the recent Nokia phones in that respect.

Wow hats off to you because I totally forgot about that. FCC really can't/doesn't need to test downlinks. Yay for new T-Mobile nexus then haha?

this is how I was before the Galaxy s came out, I'm excited about something again! LoL

One thing has me worried about the Nexus Prime, the size!
It is nearly 4.7 inches. Maybe possible to still keep the phone small since the buttons are built into the OS/screen, untill I saw the leaked videous. If the phone in the leaked videos is really the next Nexus, it is HUGE and has a bunch of wasted Bezel space at the bottom. Size alone is a huge factor, I can't carry around a huge phone.

Look at the dimensions from the FCC.
124 by 68mm.
For comparison the vibrant is 122 by 64mm.
The nexus IS BARELY bigger than the Vibrant. I'd say the size is perfect. The lack of those physical buttons apparently really makes a difference.

Thanks, I guess that huge black area of the bezel on the bottom on the videos is misleading if those dimensions you stated are accurate.
Gosh I want this phone, release it already! It better come to T-Mobile and not months from now! How much do you think it will cost at full retail without a contract? I hope not more than 500.
On a side note, if it uses the same PowerVR SGX540 as our Vibrant, that goes to show that our Vibrant still has a lot of power, at least in the GPU area. Nexus should have used a better GPU, but it's ok!

Does it really matter? can you see the difference?
It is a phone camera, don't expect real 8MP from an 8 MP phone camera. I mean even those compact cameras sensors are very small (little finger nail-size) and you can't compare their pictures quality with the ones from SLRs.
To me, 3MP is enough, more than that is a waste of storage space for a photo that is taken by a camera phone. My previous Vibrant camera had always been set to 4MP (Wide mode).

That's coming from BGR's old rumors... Newer rumors say otherwise. Either way I don't see why people get their panties in a knot without any official word. Anyone could, potentially, release rumors of whatever they wanted.

Yeah it seemed weird, but it was dated OCT 8...didn't make much sense seeing as the Amaze has -the better ones- those specs and that phone is days away from launch...
And no I cannot tell the difference between 5-8MP couldn't care less...point is android phones come out with the newest hardware..always...so it seemed strange to have a camera that uses 2 year old technology is all...

Verizon version is supposed to have lower specifications than GSM version.

I might have not stated it too clearly but I found an article talking about how other articles are just digging up the rumors from the BGR article from forever ago.
Maybe that article was just optimistic and thinks the other ones were wrong, maybe it was right and the other ones were wrong. I am waiting until the phone is announced and Google (or the manufacturer) tells me what the specs are. I have no requirement to decide right now what I want to buy.

i'm pretty stoked, i thought about the Hercules, then was like hell i'll grab a gsm version of the sgsII HD then bam find out the Nexus Prime is a Boosted version of the SgsII HD, with stock android 4.0... can't beat that, straight ota updates from google, no twiddling my thumbs hoping my phone gets updates before my TV does. actually now that i think about it my samsung TV has gotten more Network updates then my Vibrant lol.
also who needs a 8 MP camera? anyone here gonna print out Billboards? that resolution seems silly. 5mp with a better lens and hardware is more then acceptable for a phone. you want to do true to life digital photography for business get Nikon, Sony, etc. Digital SLR.

last i checked it was a dual mode phone, capable of both CDMA/LTE and GSM/HSPA very similar to the Verizon Droid bionic, sim slot for travel and cdma here on VZ's networks
also as far as specs and Rumor's go i find GSMarena/Phonescoop to be the best two sites for updates and near accurate information.

I'd heard that Galaxy Nexus 2 rumor/leak was fake (it included a microSD card, and very little modification from the current GNex)...and I'm not really willing to wait 6+ months with my OGEpic

Why not? Is their something your epic can't do that these new phones can? Or are you one of the ones who needs the latest and greatest? Not that that is a bad thing, just curious as to why you're so anxious to get rid of a device that still functions perfectly even with the latest android version...

And as much as I would have liked them to make a CDMA/LTE model, Sprint and Verizon kind of were deserving of getting shafted due to how they handle things with manufacturers on their carrier. Removing their power in a not so literal way.

Nah, my epic is slowly falling apart (screen cracks, needs a new battery, among other things), and I don't have any need for a physical keyboard, meaning I don't need a phone this big.
And it's not really latest and greatest 2+ years after I got the device. Technology has moved further, and it'd be nice to have all the "comforts" of the phones of late 2012 - great, fast cameras, fast processor speeds, NFC, etc.
Again, I'm not anxious, I've had my upgrade available since July of this year, just wanting a good device worthy of an upgrade from the Epic, available on Sprint, which doesn't seem to be coming out any time soon.

I'm considering the N4. Sprint's service has been so "meh!" in my area for the last 6 years, that switching to Tmobile or a MVNO seems to be a nice idea. Here is an article that gives some insight as to why no LTE radio.

While I know that everyone has a different experience with their network, a side by side of LTE and HSPA+ shows that for the majority of users, HSPA+ will be perfectly fine (although most people considering a Nexus phone are probably power users), but the T-Mobile HSPA+ here in Denver beats the crap out of my WiMax network. My nephew has the Galaxy S 4G (not the S II) and it consistently gets speeds 25-30% faster than my average WiMax speeds. With the Nexus 4 it bears mentioning the added processing speed of the faster processor and additional RAM. I think overall Google may have made the right choice excluding LTE as it keeps the cost of an unlocked phone down. Has anyone seen what the iPhone 5 goes for? Or the SGS III? That they are producing this for 50% or less of other premium phones cost is amazing. Also, the Nexus 4 is SEXY

So a follow up on this, my friend on T-Mo with his SGS III just ran 6 speed tests for me of the HSPA+ network and his average DL in Denver was 21.73 Mbps and average UL was 2.36
Not as strong an upload as LTE, but the DL is about 5 times my average with WiMax and UL is pretty comparable.

LTE is a must feature, IMO. I like the fact that Google is sticking it to CDMA carriers, but it is a Pyrric victory. Nexus 4 sales will likely be sluggish, its specs notwithstanding. As for me, I no longer have any patience with Sprint (and its NetworkVision promises), and Epic, for all the wonderful dev effort, just isn't meant to run JB very well and now feels very dated when it comes to processing power and RAM. Going to get a VZW S3 in a few weeks.

There is now Sprint LTE in my area so I am rather anxious to upgrade. It is really too bad that the Nexus 4 is not going to be on Sprint and the Optimus G has less than stellar battery life and no removable battery/sd card, I guess even if the Nexus 4 was on Sprint it'd have the same downfalls.
If the SIII had the internals of the Note 2 (including the non-pentile screen), it'd be perfect.

N4 16GB ($350) + T-Mobile plan ($30 no contract) = FTW
Cannot resist that deal even with my Epic + SERO plan ($60)
Done with all this 4G/WiMax/LTE hype when in reality I hardly even use those speeds given the current coverage limitations.
