Web Browser experience - Nexus One General

Does a modern html5 site like this http://sammystodos.brandonaaron.net
works on Nexus One or Desire?
It seems that the browser doesn't support standards as much as safari on iPhone..

Chrome is by far the best browser on the market, followed by Opera.
Eventually they will merge everything that desktop's Chrome can do into Android..
But so far - yes, that website works fine, except for editing the fields that you added. I assume that can easily be fixed by tweaking the site itself.

I can confirm that its working on the nexus one with to stock browser.

Which "Chrome" browser are you speaking of? I see a couple that say they only replace the logo, but none claiming to be anything different than the stock browser.

Sorry can u post a screenshot because I tried it in an emulator and I just see the background

No problem

Can you actually type?
I tried it on the Desire browser and it looks exactly like yours, but I cannot type. Holding the Menu button to bring up the keyboard doesn't work either.
Checking the checkboxes and using the trash can icon to delete items do work.

Google Chrome browser. I understand that Android is running a simplified version of Chrome on the PDAs.

So the stock Android browser?

The Android browser isn't Chrome. They're both WebKit based though.

Yeah I know.. but I betcha they use a lot of the same code.
Why rewrite the whole thing of they're both based on WebKit and Chrome obviously has awesome code.

I think the N900 might have the best mobile browser, my brother has one and it's pretty slick.

How is it better?

It's Fennec, which can do everything Firefox can do, including making use of the desktop addons, and it supports Flash 9.4

This will be an ongoing problem with HTML5.
"how does it look on this browser ??"
This is what people dont get about Flash. You have complete control over how everything looks. You dont have that control in HTML , everything is still browser dependent.
Not saying this cant be ironed out..but the impression that a <video> tag is going to solve HTMLs shortcomings is silly. As it stands the browsers are already divided over codec support.

Hi guys, i wanna take advantage of this thread to now more real-life web browsing issues.
How well works this sites on the N1 or HTC Desire browser? (without adding any ad-hoc apps)
- www.facebook.com (does the chat work?)
- www.youtube.com/html5 (how well run the html5 video)
Can u compare them to a normal web browser or iphone?

[Q]Any chance to get browser in desktop mode?

Hi just like title says.
Debug mode doesnt work
I installed Dolphin HD. You can find a "desktop"-mode in it's settings.
Dont want to mess my device, dont want a workaround ;-) so I'll stay at stock browser ... this one must do it somehow
what exactly is this desktop mode? Do you mean fullscreen? If so, webkit wont hide the taskbar, youll need a third party browser like dolphin or firefox.

the mode I nean is that the browser is not recognised as a mobile device but as a desktop pc, some sites redirekt you to mobile version and features are not available e.g. google calander
On my HTC, just click the menu button in the browser, then "More", then "Settings" and there you should see "Mobile view", just untick it.
Webkit will not allow you to choose user agent. Get dolphin he from the market, it does.

Mmm I don't think you know what you're talking about.
Dolphin is using Webkit, it's just the appearance that has been changed.
And you can do it with the stock browser just the way I explained it a few post above.
Oh please.
Why don't you try doing exactly as you've recommended above little buddy, starting with more, then settings, then whatever.
what he is saying is true, i have that option on my htc but not my galaxy.

The Samsung stock browser does not offer the ability to change user agent. Samsung have stripped that setting from the browser (along with quite a number of other ones littered throughout the OS). Samsung's iteration and Dolphin are both based on webkit.
Use Firefox (behaves a bit randomly though, some pages display mobile view while others don't) or Dolphin HD with Desktop Toggles AddOn as a work around until we get some custom ROMs for this thing.
Like said above no setting like this in menu, not even with debug mode. Personaly I think the whole device is on every edge a bit buggy, translation faults and some senceless functions, or some wich are not thought to the next level. Like allshare, nice but not really functional no option to set more files at once in playlist, or mydocs, no option zo rename.
I also miss that function . On my N1 I can go into the menu and change so the browser does not present itself as a mobile device. On the big screen tab I would mostly like to view webpages as a real browser and not a mobile browser.
When You log on to a newspaper they all end up as mobile pages and You only get the stupid headlines and not the stuff You actually browsed to get.
Tried to download COD yesterday but could not do it as the browser went into mobile mode and presented itself as P1000 which stopped me from even trying to install it.
I search a little bit around without success, about:debug enable some features but seems there is not a chance to enable it.
Seems it happen also with Galaxy S with froyo installed, differently than HTC Desire that has the default the user agent selectable by default (I think is an HTC chose).
Anyway not just Dolphin HD allows to change it also Skyfire, but I agree that would be nice to have it on the default browser...(that seems to be faster then the Dolphin)
For me xScope 6 is the fastest (and featurewise imo the best as well) on the Tab.
With yesterdays release of Dolphin HD 4.0 we now have the finest mobile browser on the tab. All the bugs that used to tick me off are gone and fullscreen is silky smooth.

stock browser-FINALLY FOUND A WAY TO CHANGE USERAGENT!!

so far i have tested this on two different froyo build browsers and they both work
in the address bar type about:useragent theres a couple different things you can change it to

And what (if any) differences there are between this and the stock Samsung FroYo browser?
Also, I believe Hulu enforces viewing policy based on information it receives from Flash itself, not based on the browser user agent. Hence, different browsers/UAs shouldn't matter.
I can confirm that the "about:useragent" trick works on Cognition Beta 2.2 v9. Only problem is it doesn't persist if the browser is restarted. Still very useful though.

The awesomeness that is Opera Mobile

I have been struggling with the slow default browser for a while now... generally laggy, but particulary dismal on these forums and on Slash dot. I'm sure you all know how it goes. Had to resort to Firefox for many things, but that has its own problems, like not very tablety UI.
Well, today I found Opera (note: Mobile, NOT Mini - both are in Market). Where the hell were those guys before? It's blazing fast - yes, even on XDA forums - yet still full featured, and with UI that looks and feels very nice on Xoom - address bar always on, and tabs are one tap away. Bonus points for default black theme which meshes nicely with Honeycomb. The only downsid so far is no Flash - it mentions support in settings, and shows the "tap to play" icon, but doesn't load plugin on tap. I guess not updated for 10.2 yet...
If you hate default browser, definitely give this a try. Oh, and don't forget to check opera:config - lots of interesting settings there, like font/color overrides.
Dolphin HD?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Dolphin uses same engine as stock browser, and seems to be slow on the same websites. Firefox and Opera are not because they have their own engines.
I do like Opera mobile browser myself. I use it on my OG Droid all the time. It's a good solid speedy browser. But then again I also like xScope and their web browser. It works very well on the Xoom, and you can also change the user agent. It has a file browser built into it which might be good for some who don't already have a basic file browser. Should give it a go sometime. It is probably the fastest of them all, I've had it since launch. I have xScope Pro and prefer it over any of the Opera browsers any day. But they both are excellent choices. It's all preference based. Right now I am mainly using Dolphin HD on my Xoom until xScope gets flash 10.2 working correctly. Dolphin is a pretty awesome browser.
I'm stuck between xScope and Dolphin for my default browser. I can't choose. xD

Well if u go to opera:config ---- user prefs ---- Custom user-agent you should see a blank window, insert your the user-agent string in that field. I've tested this with the ipad and chrome strings now i'm using the firefox string
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; ru; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/4.0 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Yeah I tried out Firefox and couldn't believe how much faster it opened some sites compared to the Honey browser. I did get a lot of crashes though. I will have to try Opera now. Thanks!
I actually tried Opera Mobile again and their new update for tablets. Not bad, it's getting better. It certainly might have the potential to maybe be the top web browser if they keep updating it for the newest devices and adding new features. I'm keeping an eye on it and look forward to updates.
On a side note.. on the desktop I always preferred Firefox over Opera because of all the add-ons and customizations, like adblock plus. And Firefox was always a speed demon. They are trying to bring that full desktop experience to us Android users, add-ons and all! I'd watch out for Firefox as well even though the browser is still in the early beta stage. Once perfected it will dominate for sure, but it has a long way to go in terms of development. Gotta love the fox!
This string works great.
Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.0; U; de) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.00
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!
The smoothness of opera's scrolling has always been the selling point for me. Tried all the rest and havent been satisfied. Now that I dont get the annoying mobile versions of sites im all settled..

It looks like I was actually using the updated version. Unfortunately, I found its release notes, and they say that Flash does not work on Xoom specifically.
Speaking of speed, one thing I found interesting about this Opera release is that they somehow made it silky smooth panning and zooming without either the Safari-style "checkerboard" nor bitmap scaling - honest vector rendering only. What's interesting is that desktop Opera isn't half as good at that (partly why I switched to Chrome on desktop some time ago). Mobile getting all the love?
After using it for a while, one thing it's not is very stable (well, not any more so than Firefox beta). But between them two and the stock browser, you can always find one that doesn't FC on any particular website
I love Opera Mini but am I the only one that can't get flash to work with it? I also don't know why it isn't picking up my bookmarks that I used with my stock browser.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Once they did Flash this will be my daily browser. just smooth as butter.
i just installed Opera on the Xoom.. works great, fast, but 2 things
it says there is Flash, but it does not work, on demand or just auto, nothing, just blank screen
2. no option to set "desktop" always goes mobile.
i could be missing something, please help

[Request] Hcomb Browser Fix

The main app any tablet user uses is the Browser I'd assume and unfortunately its the weak spot on Honeycomb.
Viewing most desktop sites is very unbearable (try facebook, XDA, Google Plus) as the page lags, and text input is very difficult as well (huge lag)
Do any devs have any idea how to improve the speed on this stock browser in custom roms or so, I remember a kernel on the Xoom fixed things
This link has more info:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17353
If we could get a fix for this I could finally love my tab.
There is a lot less lag on the bonsai rom, but it's not completely gone. Ultimately google will have to be the to fix it.
theyve never mentioned it /acknowledged it
thats the worrying part
Ya know what actually, as,much as i dont like the look of the browser, opera mobile is the best functioning browser ive ever used. There is no browser lag, it render eveything exactly the way my desktop does. Im very suprised that google cannot mirror whatever opera mobile has done.
Ill give you an example of where opera finally got it right...
Try and do a search on xdas site and see what happens. It opens the text box for a second and then it drops the keyboard. Its never works and it is so annoying.
Now try it on opera mobile. Oh my god, it works!
It doesnt work on dolphin, firefox or any other browser ive tried. Opera mobile it works. Can a super sharp coder figure out a way to take whatever opera has in it and put it in the stock HC browser??
it`strange becouse in some forums is all ok, in other the text is very very slow :-(

I tried Opera and everything works great except two things. the first is that often times you will enter text in a text box, and then when you minimize the keyboard to click the submit button, it removes everything you just typed! I had this happen to me about 5 times and then I gave up and uninstalled it. The other issue is mainly a preference, but the tabs suck! Give me real tabs like the stock browser. opera and Firefox have a horrible tab implementation on Android.

even when I've manually set the useragent to a desktop browser, I still get kicked to the mobile versions of some sites. And sites like...google search, which should know better!
I've tested a bunch of browsers at this point and none of them are perfect. I think dolphin comes closest, but it definitely has little things that are annoying (such as it being way to easy to close the wrong tab)

Unfortunately, you will have to do this after each reboot of the device. This has been an issue from the earliest versions of Android and Google seem to be incapable of finding a solution to what on the face of it seems to be a relatively simple problem.

Dolphin Pad seems to be a bit better about remembering this...although some sites still insist on loading the mobile versions, at least it seems to remember the setting once it's set. It's a good browser anyway, I keep going back and forth between the normal browser and it, can't decide which one I like better. Both are good.

What are you talking about? I set defalt browser to desktop a month ago and it still shows as desktop.
That's not the same thing - that just renders in desktop mode. Sites can (and some still) redirect you to an m. version. The difference being major HTML/CSS /JS(Q) etc. Optimization for mobile browsing is still a concern for a lot of Web developers.
You can set to render Desktop but the sites that check mostly doesn't care what you have it set at. If you don't meet its criteria for a Desktop browser they will redirect you to a m. version (IF they have that functionality in place - not all sites do)
EDIT***
I'd also like to add that the the UserAgent setting not being permanent is in all likelihood a Honeycomb bug. Nobody can get it to stick using the stock browser however it works flawlessly on 2.x OS versions.
I just went into the browser settings, under advanced, changed to desktop and I don't get the mobile sites anymore.
