Skype / Sip / Voip App - Desire Themes and Apps

Anyone any advise on the best skype, voip, sip apps ??
Thanks

If you need to make skype-to-skype calls then Fring and Nimbuzz. If you just need to make paid calls, Skype Lite should do.
Best sip app is sipdroid.

what's sip?

It's one of VoIP protocols: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_Initiation_Protocol

I have to say that I used fring the other day to do a skype to skype call over wifi, and the quality was bad - delayed audio, crackling, general low audio quality. My partner has the skype client for iPhone, and her call quality is, to be honest, amazing. It sounds better than calling on mobiles (when calling over wifi).
I hope this is not common and I would love for someone to tell me if Nimbuzz has good call quality over wifi.

I had the same experience with fring over wifi. No point in even trying 3G.
Why don't you just go ahead and test nimbuzz yourself?

nimbuzz has better sound quality than Fring. Do not know about the comparison to iphone skype app.

What is this Skype Lite?
Is this the one for Verizon Wireless?
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/android/
But this one is useless to me because it cannot be used with WiFi ...
And it is only for Verizon
I just dont get this, why Skype does not make generic full native client for Android?
Google does not allow it?
Skype does not know how to code?
Patents?

I really can't believe we can't get an official skype app for android.......

I think most mobile networks do not want people making calls over Skype because it goes over VoIP the voice network - So your network would lose out on charging you.
However, I just found out you can install Skype Lite beta on the HTC Desire and it makes calls/IM's. If you look on google for "Android Freeware - Skype Lite Beta" you should find it.

Does it work via Wi-Fi?

The chat/skype>skype feature works via the 3g/data/WiFi however landline calls goes via your phone's voice network (charging your network minutes).

But then we would all be on the 3 network

I use Smartgroshen app, simple, good quality of voice and sync with your phone contacts. Get 0.5 euro at start.

I am also using Smartgroshen app for calling. Skype is OK, and Smartgroschen more than OK.:good::good::good:

• I use Smartgroshen app. • With Smartgroschen app, you can make cheap phone calls to all mobiles and landline in the world from your smartphones and tablet without sim card.

Skype for EXPERIA X2
In Russian firmware R3AA035 (last at this time)
not working IP telephonia: skype or sipnet, voice from the microphone blocked on hardware or drivers level.
Not working sound recording during a telephone conversation, too blocked at the hardware or driver level.
Do not operate a missed call indicators.
I find the time and will return to court for compensation, would recommend to everybody to do likewise.
It's a joke SE?
why do I pay for it?
Skype no more support Windows Mobile, you can use old version (worked on other phones WM)

I think Verizon Wireless has some sort of exclusivity on the Skype app.
http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-mobile/skype-mobile/android/
Skype exists, but right now, it's limited to Verizon in the US.
(Also, the program is called Fring. How many times can you misspell the word "Fring" in one thread??)
Fring or Fringe that is not the point.
As long it does not allow us to make skype calls i realy do not care how you spell it
Fring or Fringe cause it is useless to me.
Alright guys, i gues i can forget skype fo rnow.. but is there any other software like skype where i can buy credits and make voip call sover wifi and 3g???
http://www.truphone.com/applications/devices/android/ it seems it is what you are looking for... i think, you can find it in the market
i searched the market for voip apps and a i got quite a few
so you should look an see if there is any that is good for you
I always use Nimbuzz to make free calls via skype. Lite version of Skype does not give call function. It is just that other person has to login to skype, as I am not not using any credit....
Are u still using nimbuzz, last time i checked nimbizz didnt offered skype out calls on android.

Thanx alot bro but this is too expensive i have US and Canada for 2.99 mth unlimited.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
I think it was the other way around, it was Skype's decision to remove there service from Fring cuz thery're not profiting from them and Fring is gaining more recognition over the Android platform. I am a long time user of Skype and I pay $13.99 a month for the Unlimited World plan just to call my gf in Thailand. It is sad to know that they removed their service from Fring but this can also mean that they're developing an app of their own that could make VoIP calling over Android possible? Nonetheless, i'm still getting my White Rachael

Galaxy s and nimbuzz

Has anyone got nimbuzz working for the i9000? When I make a call to another person over skype they can hear me clearly but I can never hear the other person anyone else got this problem? I hope theres a fix out there cos its a shame that such a powerful device doesn't even have voip my friends old black and white nokia haas voice calling and he's slating my awesome phone lol how its that possible that an old beat up nokia can voice chat but I can't? What about the old skype.jar file? Can that work using j2me runner?
Please help!

install fringe
it works
it can do video calls too
and also does MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, AOL, SIP (whatever that is)
after installing fringe i removed Google Talk, MSN, and Yahoo chat from my phone, since that single app can do it all
But lemmie guess, with fringe, does it use the speaker only?
Because I use sipdroid, but since it uses the loudspeaker, there is lots of echo. On the i7500, they apparently used another kernel to fix these issues.
I can't use fring because its blocked in the uae if I could I'd run to use it lol could someone tell me why nimbuzz isn't working? That's my only option now cos talkonaut is ****e

Fring support seems to be working hard on the Galaxy S audio and video issue.
Is there no one who has used nimbuzz successfully here?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I recall it working fine the last time I had it installed. Don't have it anymore as I reflashed my phone and trying to cut down on apps I don't use.
people say they can hear me but i cant hear them i cant imagine what the problem is
Fring doesn't support Skype video calling anymore... what does it use for video calling? Just its own protocols?
Also, it's annoying because you cannot set the notifications in Fring - it's the same annoying vibration!

Fring doesnt support Skype anymore at all.. no? not just video calls..
Fring is working fine here, doesnt support skype anymore for now but evrybody have msn right?
Sipdroid supports video calls but I didnt try it yet so I dont know how it works.
If you are interested just in sip calling, I just found a very nice app
light and with a very good call quality and no configuration needed, just sip settings : mobileVOIP
Well you do need an account with a supported voip provider
I'll try this when I get home thanks although I need skype to work msn would still be good

I installed this apk but I can't use this skype to call my online contacts. Can you use this app to call your online skype friends from your X10?
It can't make calls...Check out Fring in the market, I know it used to let you make Skype calls, but I'm not sure if the app still works because of some legal issues with Skype.
Not Fring
Fring was cut off from access to Skype.
There are a few apps that talk to Skype IM (such as Meebo) but not voice.
In May Skype said that they would make an Android client for all phones to be released sometime this year (right now there is a limited version that only works with/over Verizon). But there hasn't been any update from Skype since then.
Nimbuzz lets you make Skype calls... and SkypeOut calls over 3G as well.

The reason no such thing exists for Android is because of Verizon Wireless buying exclusive rights for their Android phones only.
The official Skype application is probably one of the worst "official" Android apps out there. Also, there's no such thing as "free Skype calls". Thanks to Verizon, the official app uses your plan's minutes to make calls.

(full) Skype on Android

(full) Skype on Android, is it coming????
I found this from May 2010 (come on Skype it is about time, time to catch the market or we all move on...)
http://skattertech.com/2010/05/skype-mobile-coming-to-sprint-htc-evo-4g/
"Skype envisions a world where video plays a larger role in the way we communicate. The next generation innovation involving video calling will not be bound to the computer. We’re seeing a proliferation of video calling shared between all kinds of connected devices. It’s on computers (today 1/3 of all calls on Skype happen via video), televisions (Skype bringing video calls to living rooms via Panasonic, Samsung & LG partnership), and it will eventually be coming to mobile devices too. We’re betting big on video, and we intend to set the bar on mobile video calling, and it’s something we’re going to do this year.
We will be bringing a direct to consumer app to the Android marketplace later this year. This application will be available for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers. (i.e. similar to how we offer the iPhone app today)"
– Brianna Reynaud, Skype PR
Skype’s bold statement was clear on two things: they will be launching a mobile video calling service as well as a standard Android app this year.
Update 5/28/10 9:41AM: After a quick phone call from Skype’s PR team early this morning, it looks like they may have pulled the trigger a bit too soon with this comment. According to Reynaud, Skype will definitely be releasing a “direct-to-consumer” Android App this year, however the aren’t completely disclosing whether mobile video calling is an included feature.

Skype is available to users in (just about) any country, providing free video chat to both parties (for now at least)....simple enough until Google roles something more universal out.
A. People already have a large base of contacts on Skype.
B. Google voice isn't available outside to the majority of the worlds population, who just happen to live outside the USA.

I have Google Voice on my SGS, and I had to go through great lengths to get it, as I'm not from USA. That right there is your first reason for wanting Skype. Skype is global. Then, once I had everything installed, I noticed that Google Voice uses a callback system. This results in significant lag if you' re outside of USA. Also, Skype is both a chat, a voice, and a video call software, packaged nicely into one app. If you' re in USA, I understand why GV is more appealing to you, but everywhere else Skype makes more sense.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
exactly, i would LOVED to use Google Voice, but it only works if you are in the USA, if you are not in USA you get an error message.
Skype IS already available for Android, but it only works for the #3 network in UK, its locked to only work on #3 network SIM cards
if some one can maybe HACK that version of skype and ignore the check for #3 network, then we can all use it
Fring
You should use Fring. It is free! it can do video conferencing sms(chat) and make phone calls. I use it for a while now with some other people and it works FANTASTIC! I recommend testing fring first before going to pay for something that can be freely done.
nimbuzz is also a good option.

Can you make a post, or link to an article, regarding your set up and results of Google Voice (what lags and how much? How long did it take to set up? Do you have full functionality? Do you only use a tiny bit of it's full functionality due to competing services being better? etc.). I find Google Voice easy to download, but I never really tried to extract its functionality. Would you do it all over again? Please, the more information, in a "overseas review" like form, the better and the process used would be great!
Thanks in advance.

You can use GV outside the USA fairly easily by a combination of SipDroid and ipkall.com
i suppose using ip relay service would work, but that usually inherit a certain lag, definitely not something you want in a VoiceIP call.
even when browsing a website ifyou use IP relays it always gets delays

Because there are millions of android users outside US who don’t have access to google voice. Skype is sometimes even used synonymously with VOIP, there is a huge demand for it. That’s why so many people ask for it. Even businesses use it as their official telephony method for overseas calling.

Have you tried this yourself ?? SIP relaying introduces a huge delay. And the last time I tried SipDroid I had a terrible echoing problem as well.

Fring is not really an alternative to Skype, for one, it doesn’t support Skype, you can make voice calls for some other networks (gtalk, MSN) but the client has a huge delay and a terrible echo to the point where it is almost unusable. I have tried fring on different countries in Asia Pacific region with very good Wi-Fi and 3G connections, but results were almost same. Very rarely I could get a usable connection, so you cant rely on it. Video calls only work between fring clients, and there is no desktop version that supports video calling, this IMO severely limits usability. Besides, video calling is provided at reasonable rates in many countries in the asia pacific region, so there is not much of a need to use a VOIP client to make domestic video calls between cell phones. Same goes for Nimbuzz (perhaps the delay and echo is even worse). So neither of those clients is usable, at least on Galaxy S in some of the Asian Pacific countries.
Either Skype has become a puppet of Verizon, or they don’t care anymore, because they get enough money already mainly from PC clients and Verizon partnership.
Anyways, I have given up hope of using Skype on my mobile, now using a VOIP service that support call back (12voip.com). Their IDD rates are cheaper than Skype (even after paying for calls both ways : incoming to your phone and outgoing to other phone), voice quality is not too bad either.
Fring is not support in 2.2 for the time being... you can install but you cant make proper voice call... so dont even try to mention video call...
