Sound quality in ear speaker - XPERIA X10 General

Hello,
I'm running a X10i since 2 days. I must say that I'm quite happy with it but I have difficulties with the sound of the ear speaker : as the volume is quite low, I have to increase the volume and when I increase the volume higher than 3/4 to full I hear a lot of cracking and popping.
Do you have the same problem ?
BR

On my phone to sound is quite good. I have to volume at max, and dont have any bad sounds, or unwanted noices.

is this while using the bluetooth headset?

Ive not tested it with the bluetooth set yet...
I seldom use that...
So, I think the sound in the phone itself is great.

How's the ringer volume, because I've heard random reports of it being pretty low.

Unfortunately, it is kind of low....
And i noticed when something blocks the speaker, like having it in the pocket, it becomes even lower...
And if in a somewhat noicy area.. Forget about hearing it..

this is currently one of my main gripes with the X10. The earpiece volume on my unit (firmware 1.6) is extremely low. At highest volume I get cracking and popping. If there is even a little background noise it becomes almost impossible to hear through the earpiece. It's getting to the point where the phone is almost unusable in many situations. Also the speaker volume is quite low as well. Miss many calls and notifications even at full volume.

I have just used the BT headset thus far. and the sound quality is good up until I attach them to the speakers.. Then they make a ****t up sound when I change song, or when it is no sound on at all. This does not happen when I connect them directly to the phone.

I’m having problems with the in-call volume on my X10I.
I called orange uk and was told that there have been many similar complaints with this handset on their network.
I was told them that it may be the deal breaker for me and told them i wished to return the handset.
The rep said that the reason the call volume was low was because i was using my old sim and not the one that was shipped with the upgrade.
Apparently there a certain profiles assigned to each sim for each respective handset???
The rep was confident that this would resolve my in call volume issues.
Anyone else aware of this?

Personally I have no problem with the soundquality. My problem is just low volume in the earpiece. Hopefully this can be turned up in updates or custom ROMs.

Earpiece volume is my main issue. However I am being told that it is down to my sim and not a software issue on the X10.
That doesn't sound right to me (excuse the pun) especailly as so many others are having this same fault.
That's irony for you, it works really well at everything else just not as a phone!

Hahaha, yeah well... I can't really say if that's true. I'm gonna try and get a new SIM since mine is like... Two-three years old. But I doubt that the SIM is causing problems like this.

I did get a new SIM with my upgrade, but as i didn't want to be without a phone for Two hrs whilst my services transferred to the new SIM, i just popped in my old one.
I will pop my new one in tonight and post my results.
I'm not confident though.

is it normal to hear own echo during a call?

That depends.. Is the person you are calling in the same room?
I've heard the odd few people mention this but I can't say that i've experienced this.
The volumes that low i probably wouldn't hear it anyway

Am on .16 and the volume/quality is ok if a little quiet, am mostly still getting used to switching back to pda phones from a candy bar phone, they are very different on your ear!

Now i'm on 1.0.14 and i thought upgrading to 1.0.16 may fix my issues but that update is not available for me (Orange UK).

I think SE said that the .16 update was for certain carriers and not for the phone itself. And since SE refuses to release change logs we'll probably never know.

Okay so I just changed my SIM card with the brand new one that comes with it, and there's no change in volume... Talking to the tech guy he claims that on some phones it actually did make a difference. Hard to say what they're told to say and what actually happens though.

Thats weird, im getting my X10 on tuesday, and I currently have a desire, and the sound volume in the earpiece isnt that high, and also the ring volume isnt that high, I was hoping for better from the X10 ;-(

Muffled sound on XDAII

Hi All,
I bought an XDAII about 2 weeks ago and am very please with it, however, when I make and receive calls, the sound seems to be very muffled. The people I call also comment that I sound very muffled too. Is there something wrong with it, or is this usual ? I was also wondering if a Radio Stack upgrade may cure this problem.
Here are my current versions etc.
ROM Version 1.03.00 USA
ROM Date 09/24/03
Radio Version 1.05.12
Protocol Version 1337.12
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Rob.
unfortunately it doesnt.
i know what you mean . . . but i upgraded my radio stack to 1.10 and it's still the same sound
i just hope it's just a setting of how the audio is decoded by the radio (sort of like the nokia setting you can turn on and off (at the expense of battery power) forgot what it's called.
cuz if it's not that, then it just means it's got a lousy speaker hehehe
hehe.. Thanks for the reply mate. At least I'm not the only one with a muffly speaker n mic
Ta,
Rob.
no prob
i think everybody has the same problem, only they just dont think it's a biggie (or aren't as picky as us) since the audio STILL is intelligible anyways
Has anyone else encountered a problem when either using the phone normally or through the speakerphone option, there is a slight rattling when the volume's set high?
This is quite annoying if common and is something other speakerphone phones seem to suffer from.

XDA2 not as good as it looks
Hi there
I have my XDA2 for 5 months and I´m in love with it, whenever one of my freinds mention its faults I get upset :?
But, we all know that the XDA2 is FAULTY big time, sofware not well developed yet, and yes, we think twice about buying software (same apply to hardware)
I have learn how to live with all this, still think that the XDA2 is a top tool for work and everyday life and I hope that other machines come to the market to compete, then we will get value for money
Bad Sound Quality
Hi,
I also bought a MDA II (T-Mobile Germany) some weeks ago. I really like it, but I also think that the sound quality is not the best. There are two effects that annoy me:
1. I can hear a high pitched beep in the speaker, always when the device is switched on (not only when talking on the phone but always if it is switched on). It is not very loud, but I can hear it clearly in quiet environment (my ears are still too good I think...).
2. The sound has to much "base" and to less "treble". Well, you can understand the person on the other end but this is definitly the worst sound quality I ever had on a phone.
This is the only thread I could find discussing this problem, leading me to the conclusion that either most phones are good and I got a bad one or most people don't bother if a very expensive phone sounds like a $5 toy...
Is there a chance to get a better sounding replacement phone or should I learn to be happy with it?
Regards,
Oli
Sounds Rubbish
Hi guys
i noticed the sound isn't as good as the XDA I when playing mP3's or MPG files on it.
does anyone know if there is anything that can be done to correct this ??
other than buying a set of speakers to go with it, doesn't seem much else ! ;(
any solution for this???????
I've got the same problem, however I've noticed that the sound is clear when I use the XDA 2 with my tomtom navigator the voice instructions are very clear, its strange + when I use the speaker phone the other party can hardly hear me.
sorry to tell you this, but i have got mine repaired and strange that they changed the motherboard to get rid of this problem, means it is a mother board problem not speaker or software.

The high pitched beep is caused by the poor filtering of the power electronics of the background lightning of the touchscreen. It is worse if the light is set to low. If you set it one or two notches higher, the beep sound will go away (or at least you won't hear it anymore).

problems with earpiece speaker

When listening to calls through the earpiece speaker the sound often sounds like it's blasting. Does anybody else have problems with the quality of the earpiece speaker? If it sounds good to a majority or you, then I will send it back to have it replaced, any responses would be appreciated.
CRACKLE
I have had 2 and they both crackle...I have been told that the earpiece speaker quality in these types of phones is not the best!!! So change for a another or put up with it. Mind you only need to keep the volume at minimum and you hear all calls as clearly as you should.
maybe its just o2
mines crap to
sending it back for replacement.
its supposed to be v good on this phone , why would they make it crap and everything else so good?
My 9100 has the same problem. I'm on my second 9100...the first one just died after a week for no reason. Now I'm on my second one and the earpiece speaker sounds like crap on full volume. (It wasn't the case on the first handset.) I work in a loud environment and I need a loud phone. (The spekerphone is absolutely useless too.)
I'm getting really annoyed with this device!!! For $700 I would at the very least expect it to work!!
Also, does anyone else going nuts over the lag when dialing from the touch screen? When you touch a number, it takes ages to show up on the screen...if at all. It was fine on my JAM.

any solution for low call volume issue?

heard the call volume is quite low compared to other phones.
i am mostly in noisy environment ...so it mite be a problem for me
any app to boost volume?
well i gotta admit.. the volume for this phone suckz! dont get me wrong.. the phone itself i love! headphone wise its pretty decent though!
I think at the moment we are stuck with it! im sure ive seen a volume booster about but we have to wait till the x10 is rooted!
Not sure if maybe a minor update from sony themselves can make a difference?
Low Volume Solution
I had the same issue.
i just palay a high pitch sound in my phone and all seems to work perfect.
ear peace volume increase a lot .
you can try
the notification sounds are weak as well. it's so low and i can't even hear it. i was at a friend's gathering - home party. had like 10 emails waiting for me and i didn't even hear it. had the phone in my front breast pocket as well!
i've got the same issues the sound in the headphones is lame compared to the nexus one or the magic for example.
Call volume is a real issue. I would encourage everyone to contact SE about it. If enough people complain they can boost the volume in a firmwire update.
Mod edit: not (yet) t&a related, moved to general
yes sony should incresase the in call volume it is very low if you are in traffic it becomes very hard to hear what other person is saying, sony plz solve this problem because X10 is first a phone then they should think about multimedia etc.

Bad mic on my vibrant? people cant understand me on the other line...

Anyone else have this problem? Everytime I call anyone they say I sound like a robot and they can barely understand me, its definitely the phone and wondering if this is a common issue or I just need to go replace my phone. Also being inside the 14 day return, can i just go in there and get another phone from tmobile or do i have to send it off?
i had a similar problem, i was on the phone with my gf the other night while in a car and she couldn't understand me because of all the noise, this may be because there is no second noise canceling mic. the funny thing is when i use to call on my g1 it wasn't a problem and that phone only has one mic, this is making me reconsider and go back to HTC
With all the phones getting noise canceling mics, I am starting to wonder if they really help alot....iPhone, Nexus, Droid X even has 2...
I saw some vid test of iPhone noise canceling and it didnt seem to work.....

Take the phone back and exchange it for a new handset. I have no problems at all. After reading this post, I even tested it out and called a few friends and asked them if they could hear me ok both on the phone and on speaker.
If you're talking about the HTC HD2, that's the worst OS ever. Windows? Seriously? Over Android?
Well, if it's any help:
My first Vibrant had a faulty headphone jack, that would short out at the slightest touch. I'm talking: 'brush-the-cable-or-jack-and-it-shorts' shorting out. It was completely unacceptable.
And that's what kind of worries me with the phone. It doesn't rattle or anything, and is solid in terms of plastic construction -- but it just feels cheap.
I guess we'll find out more in the coming weeks. Thanks for reporting that microphone issue. I'll be asking my friends to report on my voice quality to ensure that mine is working properly.
I have the exact same problem....this only after I rooted... what the heck is going on?
There's no automatic gain control. The mic input easily clips. Most other devices adjust the input to the noise floor where a loud voice easily walks over the background.
Any solujtion guys?
I don't have any solution, but I can't hear and they can't hear me when I'm driving in my car. Never was an issue with my G1 or MT3G. I've been using the headphone w/mic that came with the phone for when I'm driving. (to cheap to buy a bluetooth headset) I did cut one of the sides off of that so it's just for one ear now. (left the side with the mic obviously.)
As of about 2 weeks now, i have been getting this same complaint from a few people. They used the exact term "u sound like a robot or something" i have no clue what it may be and im past my 14days, thinking about just calling tmobile and complaining b/c its getting annoying.
$5 says one of you in this thread has your finger over the mic hole... just saying.
I noticed through the Bluetooth in my car which has always worked flawlessly my Vibrant comes through as having really muffled scratchy sounds at times. Full signal strength. I sound bad and the person talking sounds bad. This works flawlessly with my 5800, 3 iPhones, E65. All on the same routes I use every day.

I tried that and it didn't help. The microphone was saturated and clipping. The other party couldn't hear anything over the noise.
while driving I have been told that I sound like I am under water.
this was one of the reasons, I traded in mine for a new unit. waiting on a fix
this happens to me especially when i'm driving and i have the air on high. Im sure it doesn't help that i have a 3inch exhaust and a big turbo making noise either though
I have the same problem on my UK version (Galaxy S).
I have tinkered with the voice TX levels in one of the service menus but it made no difference. No matter how loud I speak into the mic it never gets louder at the other end! It's only just audible and it's driving my friends mad to the point where they can't be ar5ed to phone me!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks guys.
I just want to jump in here even though this is an old thread so i can log my complaint too - the voice quality of the mic microphone on this phone is really poor - i am under the 14 days return and i'm am really close close to returning both of them i bought... anybody come up with a fix? A replacement microphone with better quality would probly go a long way.
I've been getting complaints from the other side as well. Even when using the voice recorder it doesn't sound very clear. I've been using the headset a lot, but I don't think its any better w/o it. Oh and also, often I try to use voice search and it says i didn't say anything... I then plug unplug and then it works. Dunno whats going on.
Also, I put it to charge yesterday, and it wouldn't turn on - only the home keys were lighting up. So I pulled out the battery and it smelled burned. Still does 24 hours later.
But it seems to be working fine anyway.
How long does warranty replacement take if ur past 30 days?
Thanks!
The vibrant is pretty much unless for me for phone calls. I switched back to my nokia N900. i can not make phone call from in my car the people on the other line can not hear me at all. Even in quiet areas its still muffled/choppy. My finger is not over the mic hole. My nokia has no problems with this at all even in a very very loud car with the windows down going 60.

[Q] Phone call quality on headset

Does anyone actually use the phone as a phone? I'm finding that the echo cancel really limits the quality of the phone. I can hardly carry on a decent conversation in the car using the supplied headset.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Try this: connect the headset. Call your phone from another phone. Listen to both at the same time. You can clearly hear when you talk that the phone is suppressing noise.
What I find is that when I'm in the car, it actually seems to suppress the volume of the person on the other end! So, it can be very frustrating as I miss words that they say.
Combine this with AT&T's marvelous AGC (where if you don't talk, it cranks the volume so that when you do talk, it blows the person on the other end away!), and the total quality of the call is horrible.
I've been using cell phones for almost 20 years. This is the worst phone quality I've ever experience.
When I use the phone directly for calls, everything sounds clear and at a consistent volume with one exception, while waiting for the other party to answer, the call ringing tone goes up and down in volume.
I've paired 3 different bluetooth headsets to the phone and found that the volume in my headset goes up and down quite a bit. Usually it's the worst at the beginning of the call. Sometimes I can't hear the other person answer but then it levels out a bit and the volume fluctuations are less extreme. I've tried an old Sony Ericsson, a Jabra Extreme, and have settled on a Plantronics Voyager Pro+. The Voyager is about the best I've tried but still exhibits the volume fluctuations but not as bad. It also supports A2DP so I can listen to podcasts through the headset.
I use it with the Sync system in my ford f150 and have no problems at all. It works great. I dont use headsets so..........only my sync system
I thought it was just me. My Plantronics 925 does this as well. Calls from the phone are fine, but the headset volume cuts in and out. Is this a bad Bluetooth stack or other problem? I think I remember another phone (WM 6.5) that had to get hacked to fix this. I'm a little miffed on this. Did anyone at Samsung or ATT test the bluetooth on this phone before selling it?
I have had very good call quality whether using the "phone as a phone", the phones speaker phone, or a blue ant bluetooth headset. I have had poor call quality only when trying to call someone in very low signal area. That has only been once. Otherwise overall clarity and volume have not been an issue, actually phone volume on high is too loud for my ears!
adding to my earlier post. I exchanged my Focus due to an unrelated issue. Both handsets had the same fade out issue with the bluetooth headsets. I've experienced it on every call so I don't think it's signal related. I don't see any volume fluctuation at all when using the handset without the bluetooth headset. I've tried the same three bluetooth headsets on my wife's iPhone 3GS and all work fine. I've also streamed at least a couple of hours of podcasts from the Focus to my headset and the volume is perfectly level. Whatever the issue, it's only related to phone calls. Very frustrating.
I've experienced the same issues. I have an Aliph Jawbone Icon. Before I updated the firmware on it I could barely hear someone on the other end. With the new jawbone firmware I have the ability to control the volume in the headset and only when I have it turned all the way up does it work ok. I do, however, still have trouble when people are talking that when the first start and or finish talking what they say seems to get clipped. Further, the volume seems to fade in and out. Also, if I'm using the AT&T navigator software and have my headset attached it will give me directions through the headset, but the end of every direction gets chopped off. So, the avene or street part of a direction doesn't come through.
I've been following this issue in a few different forums. Today a moderator in the Microsoft Answers forum jumped in and said they were experiencing the same problem and they would escalate the issue.

Can't recommend this phone
I was so excited when I first got my Focus. I thought it was such a huge step forward for MS mobile and actually had some chance at being mainstream. Sure it lacked a few features but there was the hope that MS would update the phone quickly. After all, they seemed to have made such phenomenal progress in getting the phone to market, seemed like fixing a few things and adding a few features would be a no-brainer.
Well, here we are 3 months later (Apple released the first update for iPhone 1.0.1 only one month later) and lots of rumors but nothing substantial on the long-awaited update. We'll see cut/paste but it's not at all clear if they will address anything else.
Here in CA we have a law that says we can't talk on the phone unless it's hands free. For the first time since that law was imposed, I've been regularly breaking it. I can't use a handsfree headset. Even the wired one that comes with the phone is so damn inconvenient that by the time I get it going, the caller is long gone. So, seemingly MAJOR features like BT headsets appear to get no notice at all from MS. I've looked through all the threads and there's nothing from MS. They don't even acknowledge the problem.
Looking at the thread from mcraine, I don't see where MS is going to do anything about this. Also, don't see any indication that it's part of any forthcoming updates.
Too bad. I thought this MS had a chance with this phone but they are blowing it big time. Momentum is gone now. If we have to wait another 3 months to get the browser fixed then the phone is destined to be like the Palm Pre. Good phone but can't keep up with the 'big' boys. This horse jumped out of the gate and was looking really good for the first couple of strides but then completely fell down and they are trying to coax it to get up again.
same issue here as well. mine is only a month old. it is not as noticable when sync'd to the car, but still noticable. and as said before more at the beginning of the call. if there were not issues, it would not be M$
