should i buy HD2? - HD2 General

I really want a new phone. And hd2 seems to be a great one! I just have a few conserns.
Today I have the TyTN II. Yeah, with the non-existing video drivers. Ive been doing some research and it seems to me like the LEO have some similar problems. I dont want to fall into that trap again, spending money on a phone that doesnt work the way its supposed to.
Also, Windows Phone 7 is around the corner. Is LEO worth delaying a potential wp7 phone, or should i wait to wp7 is out?
Please someone, help me out here. I really dont know what to do.

bumping this, I really need an answer FAST!!

hey there... relax!!! hd2 is a great phone, if you like windows mobile in general... the lack of drivers won't make it slow... having said that, there are some drivers available at the moment, but the cpu is fast enough you won't notice any serious slowness even without using them... wp7 is a different scenario... more or less a different system, with only a few similarities with current windows mobile... it's your call to decide whether you want to wait for wp7, which will take about a year until we get a decent phone... and allways you can be a bit cheeky and see what others report about wp7, after they got it, and then decide if it suits you!!
take care

hello!
If you gonna wait for WM7 you'll wait for 1 year exactly. Phones with WM7 will be out in the end of the year...with about 50 apliccation and games...
I will pass on WM7 in autumn...2011...because than will be at least 5000 apps

Think of the leo's snapdragon cpu as an humvee, it can go past almost anything without stopping Unlike Tytn II, you won't notice the lack of graphic drivers on this one.

Htc has stated this week that they would make a WP7S handset by the end of the year. You gotta consider that wp7s is a totally new and different OS (not just the ui but kernel too) and some cons about it have already began surfacing on the net (no multitasking, no copy/paste, closed system apps management ecc). There is no single and simple answer to your question. It's really up you whether to keep using a stable, open and customizable system such as win 6.5.x or jump on the wp7s bandwagon and accept therefore its limitations. One thing's for sure though: by the time Wp7s hits the market, htc will have released devices way more powerful than the HD2..

It's really hard to give an advice.
I bought the HD2, now sometimes I'm happy, sometimes I'm very disappointed.
So there is no clear Yes or No.
My first phone from HTC was the OrbitI. With this phone I was happy
from the first day I got it. Since 2 ½ years the Orbit works great without
any problem.
Now I have to spend really much time to get the HD2 working correct.
If I had known this before, I would have waited 1 year.

man this is a very important question i'm too having problems should i buy the hd2 or wait till second year i really don't know what to do

I you have time, money and patience, buy it

if your concerns are wp7s, just wait a while and see how this works out: http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2381

What are the downsides? Would you buy it if you knew?

class action against HTC/Microsoft?

What do you guys think of getting involved in a class action against HTC/Microsoft if HD2 is not allowed WP7? Now that WP7 is announced, many software companies are going to stop (or already stopped) developing for WinMo 6.5 and we are left outside with an already bricked 2 month old device (it's not even out for USA). I don't like paying $1.000 (yes it is that expensive where I live) for a device which will be outdated in 2 months. HTC and Microsoft should be more loyal to their customers than that. What do you all think?
HTC and Microsoft never promised a WP7S upgrade.
If you're thinking about raising a class action for something that wasn't in the contract of sale, you are, as we say in Scotland, an eejit (idiot).
Sell your HD2 now and be phone-less for 6 months, then buy a Wp7s capable phone. Or at the very least wait for an official announcement on whether it will be upgradable or not.
they never promised an upgrade, but they never said that we won't be able to use WP7 apps as well. Even when you buy a desktop PC with Windows, you're given the option of free upgrade when the new OS is imminent, else no one would buy. And that's when you can still perfectly use all the new applications on your old OS. Don't you feel kinda being cheated, is it only me??
bricked device? it still works doesn't it? you've got a year or so before 7 really hits the mass market, that doesn't stop your phone from working NOW.
do you look at cars the same way? I got my Renault Laguna, it's made in 2001 but I'm not moaning because they don't let me upgrade to the nice shiny 2010 model engine just because i have an older version.
I don't get the complaining about being able to have 7 on their phone when clearly it doesn't have the hardware (4 point multi touch, 3 buttons etc) that windows 7 needs.
I'm sure MS or HTC will take the OS as far as they feel like before 7 rolls out and I would not doubt that some of the clever code monkeys here on XDA will be able to cook up a fantastic 7 ROM that will work in some way on our currently working and rather impressive HD2's
why are people complaining about not having win7 available on the device when it is out in about 7 months time? Did you buy the HD2 SOLELY on the basis it would have this upgrade in OS? Did HTC promise you that it was going to upgraded to win7 when it came out?

WP7 is not new version of WM6.5. Call it Zune Phone and it all becomes clear.
And even if free upgrade is offered sometimes with desktop computers, it clearly is stated as a part of the contract. Here it was not. If you don't like it, you should have not bought it.
I had thought of hanging on to my Touch Pro until WP7 came out. I ended up getting the HD2 and I've never had so much fun with a phone.
We are spoiled rotten in this community. I can get my device to do anything I want it to do and a few things I hadn't even thought of thanks to the hard work, generosity and smarts of the good people who contribute to these forums.
Come on! We don't even know if we will like WP7 yet! Enjoy the amazing device you have. Modify it, flash it, load a thousand apps on it if you like.
By the time WP7 is stable, usable and has a load of good apps, we'll probably be good and ready for an upgrade.
If the HD2 does everything you need in a phone what does it matter if it will run 7 or not? Especially if HTC never promised it would.
If its just for epeen status you're gonna look like gypsy joe anyway come the time trying to run a new OS on an old phone. Either way I am sure some bright spark on XDA will make 7 run on the HD2.
Also remember that WP7 is brand new OS with no applications at all. It will take at least a year till it will start to be usable for basic operation. We don't know how hard it will be to adapt actual applications. It might be minor modifications, it might be totally impossible, and everything would have to be done from the scratch.
Yes .. we all want new better WM .. but WP7 is just not that.
How many more threads are we going to get on the same subject.
WM6.5.5 is NOT being withdrawn and will continue to support the business users. From what i've seen of wm7, its "pants" and not suitable for business use, but thats my opinion.
I find it difficult to beleive that so many of you purchased the phone based on the pretence that it would be upgraded to WM7. At the end of the day, you will get it anyway - albeit not from HTC but from XDA.

you are right but most applications developers stoped developing for wm6.5 and starts to develope for the upcoming wp7 series so it is wm6.5 end (but not in an official way)
reasons why this bull
1 in the box which my htc hd2 was piece of paper saying that this phone would get a upgrade to wm7
2 there footage of wm7 on the htc hd2
3 the fact that ms always denie all rumours about all their products
4 no device has 4 point mutil touch if was the case this would be a big deal for microsoft as apple owns the patents for true mutil touch screens
5 windows specs change all the time and this is true for all software
6 the htc hd2 pro is coming out and professionals would want wm7
a piece of paper may say they will do 7 but maybe the rules changed and they discovered in the full release version they can't run wm7
i'm sure the initial idea was great but reality has deemed the hd2 not suitable for wm7
would a pro want an OS that's not allowing backward compatibility of their "pro" apps? no so maybe they'll stick with 6.5xxxx
have you actually tried wm7 yet? all this fuss and it might turn out to be rubbish then i guess you'll bring another class action against MS to say you want 6.5 back
whether it be Apple/MS/HTC they can't please everyone but to rant about it BEFORE the OS is out is pretty pointless. think logically rather than throw toys from pram please
I think WP7 will be business oriented. Only think they can do better then the others would be exchange synchronization. Otherwise I see no reason why would anybody buy it. And before new apps are done for it, iPhone will have new version, Android will be at 3.0 and another players may show up.

Sorry guys, I couldn't help it
this forum gets dumber by the day.
I'll Stick with 6.5!
Why does anyone want WP7 anyway? My phone works just the way I want it (now, after a few problems initially), it is fast, looks great and makes most other phones look like they were just dug up in an episode of Time Team!
I have just about every app I could want, running beautifully and doing pretty much everything I could ever need. If I was offered WP7 today I would say no! An untried OS with no software support for at least another 6 months (after release) and we don't know how customizable or flexible it will be... I'd be mad to jump ship from 6.5!
When I know what the new OS actually is, when I know I can get all the software I require and that I can make the phone the way I want it and that the OS is something I actually like THEN... I'll have a new device that will have even more bells and whistles and this won't be an issue...

painful but true wm6.5 is a piece of sh*t & and being the os of hd2 is a big waste of its power & (hd2+wm6.5 ) is a big waste of money
i agree. Almost did the same mistake. I would advise you to get a phone with android OS. Sorry mate!!!

You guys shouldn't get an HD2 at the first place! Windows Mobile is for users that know what they are doing and like to optimize and customize the OS.
If you like the iPhone just get one! Please don't start discussions here that lead to nowhere!
What do you expect to hear from the community here?
I had 2 iPhones, one Palm Pre and many many Windows Mobile devices. I am an IT Pro and I know my way as regards to mobile OSes...
Having said that, I love my HD2 and I find it a great phone for everybody that wants to have a great communications device, watch movies, play music and do all kinds of stuff but games!
If you are looking a device that "just works", then Steve Jobs is waiting for you and your money...

HD2 is a brillant phone ... if u know how to use it well.
ive also had a iphone, palm pre... i total agree with petvas post
In my opinion I think that the HD2 is an amazing phone with so much potential. I have spent countless hours trying different ROMs and RADIOs and tweaking everything. Right now I am on Energy with the GTX Theme and I am LOVING it.
The one deal breaker for me though is that my phone has the Internet Dropout problem which many people around the forum have. If it wasn't for this I would love my phone to bits. But right now it's completely unusable.
T-Mobile stock ROM is a living nightmare, ridden with bugs, and unfortunately the average user would not know about HSPLing their device just to get a working phone.
Because I am completely unable to use the Internet on my phone without having to re-connect every 2 minutes, I am getting the HTC Desire, absolutely free! This is because I have reported this to T-Mobile and have tried everything to resolve it but it just doesn't work. I am just waiting for T-Mobile to get stock of the Desire and it will then be sent to me within 2 days. Hope this helps!
The complainers just fail at life and don't know how to follow simple flashing instructions. Maybe next time you guys will research how use phone and how to perform the hacks before you sink your money into it. WM is for people that near limitless access to their phone and OS.
ok listen, ive had various wm phones over the years and i consider myself a pro since ive had considerable time with wm. the problem i have is that it looks like no matter the hardware wm just wont play nice and it cannot be this way. Im tired of people saying that wm is for people that know what there are doing however if their phone were running tip top they never share the secret. why should i need a billion different cabs to speed this thing up when it supposedly has the top of theline processor. why the frequent lockups, why do i have to run cleanram every other minute. i never had these problems so fequently on prior versions of wm. also everybody says "i had an iphone". i had a 3g and that was a piece of **** too, the 3gs is the only one that counts in my book.... so unless you had a 3gs i dont wanna hear it. my hd2 should be wiping my 3gs all over the floor and its so not.

I'm not one of the ones complaining about the HD2 as I even posted above how much I enjoy it.
But I am getting tired of everyone using << it's only for smart people >> as an excuse for a phone that doesn't work out of the box.
At the end of the day, no matter what you do to your phone, the speed and stability come down to the hardware and the OS. The hardware of the device is brilliant but WM simply can not take advantage of it.
I'm sure you're extremely clever and that you can tweak the OS inside out. However my argument is that you SHOULDN'T have to tweak and modify everything simply to get a phone to work.
Let's face it, the joys of the HD2 are ROM flashing, the big screen, and that's about it.
Am I the only once that sees something wrong with an iPhone 3GS being able to work flawlessly all the time, no bugs, no errors, no lockups, very fast response with a 600MHz processor while my HD2 with 1GHz can't load 50 texts in less than 10 seconds? The hardware is definitely not to blame, so Windows Mobile fans, what is?
I agree with everything OP said, but thank goodness I have my iPhone still, jailbroke on Tmobile so whenever the HD2 fustrates me I take out my sim and drop it in my iPhone. My main problems are lag, slowdown, lock ups, resets etc. This is a brillant phone but I can't help to think HTC rushed this and Microsoft isn't gonna do anything else with 6.5 because 7 is around the corner :/

Hyperbole! EVERY corner? Does it not make calls properly?

You've just had a bad experience. Everything works perfectly for me and I would class myself as a heavy user of most apps.

WM6.5 is like a woman. You have to know what to do with it, and when you do...damn it's good. iPhone OS is like one of these internet women, can be pretty but won't satisfy you in the long run.
I came from a phone that worked 99.9% of the time to a phone that i have to mod and then have to reboot 3 times a day to work 60% of the time if im lucky.
When I had a iPhone 3G I had wifi connection issues, blank screens and ended jailbreaking it so that I could have any reasonable degree of control over the device. With the HD2, I have none of the above (or the ones you talk about for that matter). Youtube is instantaneous for me on either Wifi or 3G. I ended up flashing mine so that I could have WM6.5.X with the larger buttons at the bottom of the screen.
i click on youtube.... takes forever even on wifi. i daytrade and there is not one single winmo app that can compare to the iphone app that i have for stocks....and looked for days. i use opera mobile and this ***** locks up. i use skyfire and it wont play the videos (why the **** not)that i need especially law and order. my suppose non flash iphone can play them.. sorry for any misspelling(its the keyboard)i have to battle with. now if i only can remember where i left it......my iphone that is.

As someone said before, iPhone is for people who like simplicity and WM for people who like functionality. For me, if I wanted simplicity I would buy a Nokia 3310 not a phone that sells itself on apps (or lining S.Jobs pockets).
i've read bout all the problems the hd2 had when many ppl first bought it right after release. but honestly right now, my hd2 barely has any problems. it doesnt hang on me n i can multi task n everythin pretty smoothly, im using Dutty's ROM and it works great. nice n fast, and still stable.

You are completely right.
And for the proof is - I use an HD2 with official ROM, with a few apps to make the interface have some more of the calendar on the home page.
I just used the settings interface to personalize it's behavior to my liking.
(The only thing that might be considered as "Tweak" thet I did - was some registry settings for power save)
So - the bottom line is -
The HD2 works just fine OutOfTheBox.

Are you calling us liars? Like we like to complain about a phone we payed over $400 for? Just because you haven't experienced problems doesn't mean the phone ****s diamonds. Obviously you are the minority because day after day there are new threads with numerous complaints about the phones issues.

I came from an iPhone 3Gs and have been pleasantly surprised....Is the hardware better than the iPhone 3Gs, yes. Is the OS tied as tightly to the hardware, no. Could it be, I guess we will see with Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft's requirement and enforcement of a standard reference platform on the manufacturer's. In the interim, I have C00kie's and BsB installed with no further mods. Is it perfect? For me, it's good. I may flash to another ROM for kicks sometime in the future but why fix what isn't broken? I can do every thing on this TMO HTC HD2 that I could do on my iPhone 3Gs and to top it of TMO's coverage, in my area is pretty good.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with the ability to mod when I want. Others may want their phone to work like a 'fridge...and there's a phone for that.

I have had my HD2 since it first came out in November, it can take time to actually put how bad the phone is into perspective.
There is no denying that Windows Mobile 6.5 is riddled with bugs, and from what i've heard (officially) support for 6.5 has gone down the drain because of WP7 development. This OS will not be available officially for the HD2 because the device does not meet the standards of the OS (three physical buttons).
Sure WP7 could get ported to the HD2 which people can hack and mess about with, and if this is in fact the case, I am left here repeating: IT DOES NOT WORK OUT OF THE BOX!!
iphone user please go back to your toy and stop complaining

I've had 33 different phones ranging from the basic ones to WM, Linux and iphone. The Iphone lasted a day with me. I'm glad you have so much fun spending all day changing ROMs and tweaking your phone, if it's so amazing then why are you tweaking it?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, tell us these super tweaks you have applied which make your phone so amazing.
If not, then shut up, and move on, because this forum is meant to be a sharing community where people help each other.
So I recommend YOU leave this forum all together and go find one where everyone brags about how smart they are because that's all you're doing here.
It worked fine without the tweaks...

Have I discovered every nuance, issue and idiosyncrasy about the HD2/Windows Mobile 6.5 combination? No. Maybe I am just not as demanding. I applied C00kies and BsB to practice tweaking. It took me a week to realize I like to tweak, so I applied them. It was not a necessity. The phone worked Out of the box for me. This is no different than jailbreaking on an iPhone or tweaking an Android OS device.
If it doesn't work for you then so be it, move on to another phone that is less challenging for you. Say what you will but the device worked fine for MY needs out of box, period.

No Mobile 7 upgrade!!!!

So, I just got off the phone with TMob support and found out that my new phone will NOT qualify for Windows Mobile 7 later this year. Needless to say I am pretty upset about this, but I am torn because I LOVE this phone...I do have the option to return the phone for a full refund.
Should I dump it and wait for Sprints Version with Android or roll the dice and mod the hell out of it???
I can't stand Windows 6.5, but fear hosing my phone with heavy mods...
I was thinking of getting the HTC EVO/Supersonic as well but its a non GSM phone
i am sure it will get ported to this device.

I was thinking the same thing (porting android) since the devices are almost identical aside from the 8 megapixel camera, hardware buttons and physical size. Oh yea and sim card vs no sim card

Its already been ported to the HD2. I'm not sure why people want WP7 it sucks compared to 6.5.X. WP7 is so locked down with no multitasking, copy n paste, and restricted install on apps. Granted something like side loaded apps will be taken care of with cooked roms but no multitasking or copy n paste is big problem for me.
I'm sorry but all I want to say is SRSLY? I hope you didn't really just find out about this, this has been all over tech blogs, here and tmonews for months, even before the HD2 was released, just give it time and it will be ported.

Yup, he's right. More than likely it will be ported sooner or later. Same goes for Android on HD2. Dunno when though. Still don't let it stop you from enjoying the HD2.
Well the joke is on me for sure...Thanks for all the comments and I will have to make the decision to join the fun and make this phone really rock or wait for the next generation...I am please with Tmob and their understanding to let me out of my contact with a full refund...good customer services for sure

If you can't stand WinMo6.5, you should consider returning it. Their won't be fully-functional ports of either WinPhone 7 or Android until at least the end of the year, maybe longer(probably). This is a WinMo6.5 phone... why did you get it in the first place if you can stand WinMo? If you want an Android phone, get an Android phone. If you want WinPhone 7, wait for a WinPhone 7 phone.
Has no one seen this video? The HD2 has already had WP7 ported to it. Everything is working except the video drivers are beta so it runs kinda slow.

It hasn't been released, and it's debated whether it's real or not. And it was never stated that everything was working, plus without good video drivers, it won't be very useful.
From what I have heard and seen...6.5 > 7
Besides...7 will not be out till probably Q4 and thats not to say that TmoUs will have a Winmo 7 device at launch.
TmoUS now gives full handset discounts after 1 year, and I myself have 4 lines on my account...2 of which are still available for a full upgrade after I upgraded my line to get the HD2...so I dont think there is much to worry about here.
Besides...I have no doubt is the abilities of the XDA cooks
I say keep it! the Hd2 has a bright future with the ppl of Xda on top of it.
Stick it out man.. its gonna have wp7 and android later on for sure.. i have no doubt.
Mod it dude.. you can get it just how you want almost. theres is many roms and mods and theres no limit.
I say keep your phone because it's a great machine and 6.5 can be good. As far as android and WP7S go it could be a long wait. Android is in progress but there is a lot of work to do.
On the Windows Phone 7 Series side I wish people would stop promising that XDA will port it over for this phone. We don't know. There is a video of some reliable people claiming they have it partly working but until we have something we can install it is all rumor.

It was widely known that the HD2 wouldn't get a WP7 update weeks before it ever came to t-mobile (why do you think they're selling it so cheaply?)
That being said, there's a good chance that an unofficial WP7 and/or Android port will come to the HD2 in the future. The biggest question is how long it will take for this to finally happen...and if by the time it does, you would have moved onto a new device or not.
Supposedly WP7 has already been ported to the HD2, but there isn't any solid confirmation that its real. On the other hand, there isn't any solid confirmation that its fake either.
If you don't like Windows Mobile, then I would return the device to t-mobile, rather than going through the mind f*ck of waiting for a port to come. I don't know why anyone bought the HD2 without being absolutely sure they could stand Windows Mobile. I don't know why anyone would buy a device on the *chance* that it would be upgradable to a new OS.
WP7 will not be perfect
I agree with many ppl here that WP7 will be less functional than 6.5 mainly because of its interface.. I know that having tiles for every single app and scrolling vertically in order to find the app at the bottom would not be nice...
However, putting all the negatives of WP7 aside, the only reason I would want it running on my HD2 is mainly for the apps... lets face it, Microsoft is going to go crazy on new applications and all the developers are gonna support WP7 once it comes out... so all I want is application support as HD2 has all the hardware required to run the apps for WP7...
Love the HD2 and WM6.5, just want more and better looking apps... there are many good ones out but I would love it if I had the option to pick between similar apps...
I'm a software developer and let me tell you, working on applications for the .net 3.5 CF is horrible. For me, WP7's support for both silverlight and XNA is probably the biggest draw for me. Plus the XBOX Live integration will be killer. I saw a demo of the same application running on the phone and on the xbox and the dev said that 90% of the code stayed thed same. That is a HUGE win.
I think that the quality, look and feel, availability, and discoverability of apps is the the main reason for WP7.
WM 6.5 is a computer, and I use it like a computer. I had an iPhone before my HD2 and even though it was limited, slower, smaller, locked, etc the fact that I could search for an app and find exactly what I was looking for in seconds ON THE PHONE and have it work and consistantly look good is what I miss most. That is what WP7 is bringing to the table, and if numbers are any indication, that's what people want. Just look at market share trends.
Dream setup: Dual boot WPClassic and WP7.

Wait, you just found this out YESTERDAY?!?!? Wow. How was life under that rock? Fear not. While it might not be an "official" update, there is promising video out there that shows WM7 running on the HD2.
My questions is why in the blue blazes anyone would want that iPhone clone is beyond me.
My second question is if you can't stand 6.5 why did you get the HD2? If you can't stand it, take that sucker back.

More Likely To Happen First....WP7 or Android?

I'm sorry HD2 lovers but although Windows OS is pretty custimizable its CLEARLY a VERY OLD OS that I just cant get that into. So my question is this and your answers really depend on whether I decide to keep the phone or not. What is more Likely to happen first
-Fully Working WP7
-Semi Working Android(ie: broken wifi, bluetooth, camera etc...)
Hum! its hard to say... But I am sure that when either of those come out, its going to be a P.O.S.
I wouldn't keep my hopes up on either, but im thinking WP7 might be the easier port.
If you really don't like WM6.5, return it and get an android device. By the time WP7 is out there will likely be much better hardware out with it officially installed.
Qualcomm has dual core and 1.5ghz snapdragons in the pipeline for later this year, im sure there will be many WP7 phones with them.
On the other hand if you're a WM fan like myself, stick with the HD2 because its probably the best hardware that WM will ever be officially released on.
It would be interesting to see HTC do an official android release for the HD2. There are no licensing issues why they couldn't, just have to spend some time to do it, or at least give the enthusiast community the needed drivers and other know how to get it working so we're not reinventing the wheel. you know they've probably already got it working in shop.

WP7 port was done a couple of months ago. Android may take a loooong time or it may not even happen if we get a flurry of hi end devices running android on all 4 major carriers.

Last I head that "port" was a scam, it was someone using the remote desktop client in WM6.5 to connect to a remote emulator running WP7

This is the 3rd time i'e seen this exact same question posted. Either one will be at least 6 months-1 year away.... maybe more.... so if you don't like WinMo, I suggest getting a different phone. Personally, I think WinMo is the best OS out there for mobile devices and I am glad to have what will probably be the best WinMo phone of all time since there won't be many more winmo phones made.
My bad. You guys are right. I saw the news for the port but didn't follow up about it being fake.
I still think WP7 will be ported first.
With all the Android Superphones coming out (EVO [sprint], Droid X, Incredible [verizon], Galaxy S [t-mobile], Captivate [ATT]), its easier to buy a new device than use a ported ROM on the HD2.
I think we're more likely to see a windows 7 Shell similiar to how HTC Sense is on the HD2 before any fully working windows phone 7 ports are done. Although the hardware on the HD2 is pretty much as impressive as anything available now the fact is that, just as with computer parts it will be considered "not fast enough" when windows 7 phones are actually released.
I'm 26 years old and had my first pc in 1994. it was a packard bell and ran at 600 Mhz with 128MB or ram and a 40 GB HD. My HD2 is faster than my first pc ever was and it is about 20x smaller. Anyone else think about these sort of things and really marvel at the pace technology is moving?
The wife and I were in the food store the other day waiting in line behind some lady paying for groceries with a check. My wife was *****ing to me that people are crazy that still carry around paper checkbooks. I told her that when we're older and probably holding up a line with our surgically implanted RFID chips to pay for groceries, some youngsters will be complaining about us not using retinal scans so we can be done quicker..LOL.

[Q] Should I buy a HD2?

Hello! I've currently got an HTC Desire and I'm not that happy with Android. I'm tired of the laggy, inconsistant and boring UI of both Sense and stock Android. I've had an iPod Touch and I've got an iPad and I'm a big fan of iOS, but I want to try something new.
I've been reading about WP7 a lot and it looks very interesting, I've also tried different WP7 phones in stores and I fell in love with the smoothness and consistant Metro UI.
The phone that I'm thinking of at the moment is the HD2, I think that it would be a good choice for me because it is able to run a various number of platforms (I like modding my phone and trying new stuff). So I've got a few questions about the phone:
The phone is almost 2 years old, is it hardware good enough to meet todays and tomorrow's requirements?
How is the screen of the HD2 compared to the Desire's (WVGA, 3,7", AMOLED)? Does multi-touch gestures work well? Is it dual-touch or does it support more than two fingers?
Is Spotify available for WP7 yet?
Are any key features missing in the WP7 port for HD2 (such as camera, headphone jack or WiFi not working?)?
What other platforms than Android, WM 6.5 and WP7 does the HD2 run? I saw that there are sections for Ubuntu and MeeGo here at XDA, are those platforms stable enough for daily use? How well does Android run?
Should I buy a used one or a new one?
How is the battery life?
What are your opinions? Would you buy a HD2 today? Opinions and recommendations about other phones are welcome as well!
Thanks in advance
1. I'd say yes. It might get a little more outdated when two core or even quad core processors roll out. One the other hand, there is no operating system that could use more power than HD2 has.
2. Screen is the weakest part of HD2, AMOLED technology is a lot better in terms of picture quality as well as power saving. I'd say it is just OK.
3. No idea.
4. No idea.
5. HD2 can currently run WM6.5, WP7 and Android - all stable and all working. Meego and Ubuntu are rather proof of concepts and not useful for daily use.
6. Now this is up to you. If you're short of money, go for used one. If you can afford a new one, get a new one.
7. Depends how much you use the phone, what operating system you're running etc. I managed to get about 4 days of standby(stock battery!) on Android with automatic internet connection and mail syncing every 30 minutes and 3G off. I consider it pretty good for a smartphone.
However, the most important thing about this phone is the number of supporters here at XDA. There are hundreds of ROMs to choose from, you can try a new one every day And well, I do not think there are many phones that can multiboot two systems(there are some that can handle different systems, but each change requires reflash).
I am a person who can afford any phone any time. If someone told me that there is a HD2 with amoled screen, quad core cpu and 4 gigs of ram and (it still can multiboot) for $2000, I'd buy it right away. Back to reality - in my opinion there is no better phone out there.
Well, it's hardware is now pretty old compared to most of the phones out there. But it still works I haven't seen any place where I'd be like oh crap I wish I had another phone this is just too slow.. Never.
Screen = Big Let Down. You won't be all that happy with the screen rest assured
Multi-touch works well but not so well in WP7. I believe it is dual touch.
Spotify is available on WP7 last I checked it will take you a spotify wp7 google search.
Meego, Ubuntu not for daily use development has as far as I remember become extremely slow.
Key feature missing in WP7 for HD2 is camera gives green tint when used with flash. And imo camera quality is never as good with android or wp7 than with WM6.5 for hd2.
Take a used one from craigslist. Should be good enough.
Battery life not as good due to the aforementioned screen and 1250 mAh battery.
But, I still personally love my HD2 and won't part with it till the development from this community stops and I honestly believe WP7 would surely work perfect on the HD2 in the near future. Peace
Thanks for the responses! The only thing that makes me doubt atm is the screen.. Really love the blacks on the Desire's AMOLED display, but I guess that I'll get used to the HD2's display.
Anyone done the jump from AMOLED/S-LCD/S-AMOLED to LCD?
Kinda.. My bro has a Galaxy S another has a S2 a friend has Sensation.. So seen many pretty nice screens must admit my hd2 looks pretty sad in front of those displays.. But, when I show them Android CM7, Sense, WP7 and all.. They all say please tell us how to do it
Go get an hd2 it will be the best thing that ever happened to you cell phone wise
I won't make another topic for the same question, so I just reply to this one. I hope it won't call as digging up...
After XDA threads answering 90% of my questions, I still have one:
I will be able to afford an HD2 in March-April 2012. That said, I don't want to end up thinking "Gosh, why did I buy it?" after 3-4 months; is this phone still able to survive another year of support here, at XDA? I don't have enough cash to buy another $400 phone after half a year, so it is quite important.
Thanks in advance.

to be honest, it is a guess at this time. i mean in 6 months from now, there might be some new amazing things on the market. i would just come back and check in 5 months or so. and nicely done, not starting a new thread!
If i were u i wont even think of getting this phone.
Ya in 6 months from not there will be more new stuff out there. So talking of the current market i think compared to other newer phones the HD2 is really good. 4.3 inch display, capability to rum multiple OS's. And it's blazing fast in wp7 and android
BUT...
Just google the number of HD2 users suffering with the same fault it has. I'm a victim of the same and i feel like dashing this crap on the floor. I'm sick and tired of this. Even after performing a mtty still it restarts.
So..
Either u have to be really like others to get a good phone without any faults or you too will be suffering like the rest of the HD2 owners. WHY TAKING THAT CHANCE? IF I WERE YOU I WOULD NOT EVEN IF IT CAN RUN 1000 OS's..
I am really happy with my HD2 & it has been faultless for me on my personal setup WM6.5.x, but if you are likely to be going Android you are better looking at newer devices that are native Android.
Most hardware failures & bugs are on those users running Multi OSs or Nand Droid/W7 .

Those of you suffering WP7 restarts/freeze etc, get yourselves a new SD Card. There's plenty of data on this in the WP7 forum.
Thanks for answering, it really means a lot to me.
Ok, time to explain my history (which is a long and complicated one):
I am 15 years old, so I just have to rely on my parents' money. I got my first mobile when I was... 9? Something like that. I remember, how everyone in the school was excited by color screens! And l was proud of having a camera, even though the quality of the photos was pretty bad. But, hey, it was a camera! In the mobile!
In 2007 I got my first "smartphone". It was Nokia 6120 classic with Symbian. But I was scared about losing the warranty, so I didn't do much with it (that is, I didn't "hack" the Symbian, which is still nothing compared to modding Android). Still, I was happy with it for 2 years.
But then comes 2009 and "touchscreen time". God, how the prices of those phones dropped then! I bought a Samsung Corby. Yeah, it was a downgrade from Symbian, but at least I was able to get used to the touchscreen. I sold it in March 2011 for an acceptable price.
And here comes the "smartphone age". I bought my Galaxy Spica in July 2011. I know, probably You haven't heard of this phone, but in Poland and Russia it is quite popular. I bought it simply because of the mods - right now it is considered "The slowest phone ever" on some Polish Android forum, but, guess what? I am happy with it. It is running CM6 right now and is currently lying on my left, charging happily.
If I'm happy - why should I replace it? Well, first of all, the battery got klilled. One day I can go through 8 lessons and the phone will still be at 100%, and next day, without even touching it - bam, drops to 52%. I know, replace the battery and so on, and so on. But it really sometimes makes me mad when I have to do a "battery reset" for the third time, because it won't unlock...
I remember how I was scared before the first root of my Spica... And it went great, start to finish! Everything goes great when You follow the guides, that's what I learned in the past few months. No phone can be compared to HD2 when it comes to modding (at least IMHO), and it gives you the "WOW" factor among your friends, hehe! Nothing better then coming to a group of people showing off their 199$ Android phone and showing them the HD2's dual-boot!
What really made me excited about the HD2 is not only a modders paradise it offers, but also the wonderful support here. Heck, the HD2 Android board has more posts than most other phones section added up! And more, and more posts are coming up everyday. I would really like to have, like, 4 smartphones in my house - Android, iPhone, WP7 and probably another Android... But I just don't have the money for it. (*blames his country for its poor wages*) I do not demand every new version of Android or WP7 being ported to HD2 (because it's just too much), but I'd be happy with, let's say, one-two next major versions of Android and the next major version of WP7.
In one sentence: I definitely enjoy modding everything, I love the big choice of ROMs available here and I just hope the development doesn't stop on Mango and Gingerbread - if it's so: HD2, here I come!
If You really read the whole story (written in a very poor English - sorry, I'm a native Polish speaker), then congrats, and I hope You will be able to answer my question: Will HD2 as a multi-OS phone satisfy my needs, which are not connected to display or dual-core, but tot the software only? And sorry for the chaotic post, I shouldn't have replied in the midnight. ^^
Get one. I broke mine and am currently looking for another HD2. I could go get the new GSII but I don't really want it.

It is a great phone & if the price is right then still a trenendous bit of kit.
The flip side : if you are not likely to want WM6.5.x or multi-boot & are paying high end price then it is not the best option.

My mum says it is quite expensive, but, hey! Many phones nowadays have similar, if not worse, specs, but they are being sold with a higher price tag, simply because "they're new".
And I do want the multi-boot and I do want to play with OSes. Actually it's my #1 reason. ^^
