leak 2.1, anyway to remove bootloader? - Droid Eris Android Development

sitting here thinking, is there anyway to remove the bootloader and the leaked 2.1 os? then possibly putting 1.5 back on?

Not without serious risk... removing things and "putting them back" rarely is this simple. For it to work that way and nothing else go wrong would be a miracle.
Thanks for your input however!

possible....mayyyybe, probably....not likely
me and a couple of the other devs are going to try something later today when i get my replacement phone. no promises though like everything else we have tried it probably wont work

If you need to test something that may be risky, I am willing to donate a phone or two to be possible paperweights. Just PM me.

sitting here thinking again.......would it be possible to load a different rom file intended for a different phone? ie: sprint's hero, g1. and then downgrade to 1.5?
just trying to think of something that could help out.

I think she bricked?

I was attempting to flash 2.x using behnaam and lox's rom.

Phone is rooted using adb.
I used unlockr's guide to flash a custom recovery image onto my CDMA hero and that worked fine, here is the guide I followed:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/
I first moved the radio recommended for the rom by the dev to root on the sd and renamed it update.zip. After, I used the recovery image to wipe, then apply update.zip from sdcard. It seemed to flash fine, as it said please select reboot to complete, which I did, and it completed and rebooted the phone.
Once rebooted it gave me the android installing software image without anything else for a while, then turned off. I cannot seem to awaken my phone with any combo of keys or by plugging it into its use cable. The charging led doesn't even light up anymore.
Well I seem at the moment to be SOL, unless someone can come by and throw me a bone. I really am at a loss as to what I did wrong, as I have always read to do radio first. Not to mention as I watched it install radio it said it was installing radio.
Thanks for the help everyone.
You attempted to flash a GSM ROM to your CDMA phone, this is why your phone is bricked. I'm not sure if its possible to recover, people with more experience than I have can help you there. The problem was flashing a GSM ROM to CDMA. You are not the first to have done it, we all mess up from time to time.
Uuuh Umm...that software was for the GSM hero's NOT THE CDMA Hero.............bless your heart.
Ah **** I thought it was CDMA, guess it was a bad idea jumping into roms while still a noob.
Yea I only got the radio installed, not the rom, although that probably doesn't make a difference.
I don't think the phone can be recovered once you attempt to flash the Radio, but I could be wrong.
Hmm well if worst comes to worst I'm going with what I read on another thread and saying that I was installing the update that it found when I went to phone details and halfway through the update the phone just turned off and won't turn on anymore.
According to the other thread once it is bricked beyond belief and you play stupid they can't prove you wrong.
Best case scenario they replace it, and I won't feel bad seeing as it was a defective phone that is allowing dust to enter under the screen. But that who ordeal is an entirely different rant...lol

Yea, you're right. Flashing a GSM rom on the CDMA won't really break much. It's flashing the radio that bricked it.

Yep RUU brought back Error 170 cannot connect to phone.
Maybe the sprint repair stores will not be so asshole-esque this time around.
I'm hopeful though, as I have read a few posts about them exchanging it for a new one. Which after a bunch of calls I had hoped to have happen due to the dust thing, but oh well.
Maybe I will get lucky and my brick will actually turn out to be a phoenix in disguise.
unfortunately, flashing the GSM radio on pretty much destroys the phone.
i think its got something to do with the voltage and electricity used by the GSM radios. probably higher than what the CDMA radios use, so you didn't really brick your phone, you 'fried' it in a sense.
sorry bout that... but if you have the equipment protection plan you can probably get it replaced real easily, since the sprint people probably won't really understand what's wrong.
again I am reminded why I dont screw with radios

Once you do get it replaced and you want to put a custom ROM on it, look at the first page of this forum and you'll find sticky threads regarding four different ROMs you can put on your phone (two production release and two experimental betas).
I would suggest either MoDaCo's rom or Fresh rom. I use Fresh in mine and had no problems (although I have used MoDaCo's before and also had no issues).
Also, if you want to root the phone, there are also sticky threads that will tell you how to root your phone from Windows, Mac and Ubuntu.
Good luck.
Yep thanks everyone.
Yea I figured once no buttons would do anything and the leds wouldn't even light up for charging that it was pretty much fried. Definitely got that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I definitely should have come into this section specific to my phone and read this info instead of just doing tons of searches and getting mixed up.
Although I'm hesitant on flashing to a replacement phone if I get one, I think I will but this time make a post just to verify without a doubt. I'm sure many wouldn't mind a simple post asking if this will blow up my phone or not, lol.
Once again thought, thanks for the help. Especially to a noob that made a real noob mistake lol.
Edit: All is well, I contacted sprint chat and they confirmed I will be receiving a brand new phone when I arrive at a sprint store, and with the chat log sent to my email and printed out the repair stores cannot pull any of their gimmicks on me, they are getting a command from sprint HQ after all. This is nice, I kill my phone and I get a brand new one without dust, and this time the invisible shield goes on asap.

while the attempted flash was boneheaded , this (what I quoted) was very smart. I've had them try to reverse the decision and noted on my account in the past. All ended well, but a hard copy of the convo between me and Corporate would have been nice to have.
props for a good idea.
if you don't want trouble with rooting and flashing new ROMs to your phone, try flipz's pre-kitchen. just to try it, i RUU'd my phone and re-rooted it through that app, and its simply amazing. you just sit back and watch, don't even have to do anything.
Ok so its pretty funny but whoever it was who says that once you flash for the first time its addictive, I do have to agree. I will be getting my phone tomorrow because they had to replace it and I will be flashing, although this time I will play it safe and triple check before I get click happy...lol
So what are the danger zones in flashing, like what can brick or kill your phone? I know playing with radios can kill it if the wrong one is flashed, and I know powering off or interrupting a flash will kill/brick, but what else.
I know people said firmware alone usually will not brick you.

With the CDMA Hero, you do not have to flash the Radio. So if your attempting to flash the Radio, you're doing it wrong.

Well if the custom recovery is installed (RA-heroc), if the phone looses power while flashing the firmware, you are usually still safe, because you (usually) still boot into the recovery without issues.
Like I already said, if you want I can walk you thru the entire process thru an IM client, Steam, or Skype.
Oh ok thanks, I'm actually headed up to PA for a little trip but definitely will hit you up on that offer when I get back.

You can't guarantee anything. I know this because you don't even know how the process works.
1st Step: Samsung completes update to be released.
2nd Step: T-Mobile checks it out, makes changes.
3rd Step: Over the air update.
Also check it out, if it goes on that website, it will be here, and you can flash it yourself.

It's so easy to flash? Eh whatever.
T-Mobile has probably already been working with Samsung, so that shouldn't take much time at all. For T-Mobile to roll out the updates (to everyone) will take probably around a week or so. (I don't know why they would delay unless they need to make changes.) Like say they start Monday, some people will receive Monday, Tuesday, etc, until everyone has it.
And yea, I'm not sure if samsungfirmwares.com is an "official" site. In fact I'm pretty sure it isn't. However, a stock rom for 2.1 wandered it's way onto their before, and I mean, the rom before t-mobile even put their hands on it. So who knows.
I say to everyone. Hope for this to be real, BUT! don't expect it.

flameinthefire is just upset because he's been having a lot of problems with his Vibrant with battery and all that since he has made so many threads about his problems in the General forum.
Even if there is a OTA, you can manually push that update without waiting for the OTA as long as someone has the link for it. Just put it onto the root of your sdcard, rename to update.zip then boot into recovery and Reinstall Packages. Good to hear about this though, I'll stick to my idea by saying "I'll believe it when I see it" so I won't be disappointed if this is false. I'm hoping that it is true, but we all hoped the same about CM6 when that thread was made back in July because Gunnerman decided to post a thread about it to get people anticipated for it. (Not blaming anyone but it causes a panic in the community)

It is not even close to being an official site.
Samsung would never purchase such a domain name to use, and even use WordPress on top of that especially with a free, ugly theme.
I already knew this begin with weeks ago when this site started getting mentioned on here, but if this site were official. I would think that there would of been more 2.2 news and release dates to come with those news too. Like I said, if it were to have been official. Which I am not saying it ever would of been with such a domain name, and using WordPress.
One more thing to note, Samsung would also never create a site at Google Blogspot/Blogger. They seem to have actually hosting somewhere else now though (they did not weeks ago).

Touch screen issue

Around yesterday, after I got off work, I noticed my touch screen was acting a bit abnormally. The whole right side of my screen stopped working, everything in the column directly above the search button (even the search button itself) doesn't work.
I made a quick video with my webcam showing a touch tester app. My hands got in the way for part of it, but hopefully it's enough to show the problem I'm having.
To anyone who sees it, what do you think? easy fix? need a replacement? has anyone had this issue with their shift, or any other phone in the past? I'm hoping it's as simple as something coming loose on the inside, or the touch screen needing a recalibration.
I plan on stopping by the Sprint store today after I get off work today. Hopefully they play nice with the fact that I'm running CM7, though they shouldn't pay any attention to that.
Well from the Video it seems as though it might be a hardware issue. But I've been wrong before. I would try flashing a different Rom to see if the issue persits. As for the taking it into a Sprint store while running CM7, I wouldn't. Not unless you know the people very well. They might try and blame the issue on you rooting the phone. And or flashing a cstom Rom. You can try and recalibrate the screen by going into Menu-Settings

It resets your phone to factory lock, all locked and everything. And the gingerbread update has been cracked. Just gotta downgrade to 2.2 and then s-off and flash a 2.3 ROM. Even the stock rooted 2.3 if you want.
Well, they determined the phone had moisture inside of it, so I'm out of a fix from them. There's bound to be moisture, living in Washington and all. >_>
I can't justify paying $100 to replace a phone that's almost a year old, I'd rather hold out for something newer, ...if only Sprint would get a phone at Droid 3 quality!
I guess I could take a look at the problem myself.
Goi back and argue with them. You've got nothing to loose, unless you really did drop it in water. They tried to pull the same crap on someone I know with an EVO4G. We just say there and said prove it. After about an 20 minutes of arguing back and forth they finally said "replace it this time without charge" . But just to be clear his screen was defective. He hadn't dropped it in water or anything. I say go back and argue eith them. Or even try a couple of differnet stores.
I agree with the above poster
"Moisture" is just a bs excuse. Don't let them push you around. I was having touch screen issues too, and I took it to the Sprint Store. They ended up "giving me" a refurbished Shift for $35.

Suggestions?

Ok guys, I got my hands on an OTA and I'm gonna try to pick it apart tonight when I get home from work. Here's what I'm asking:
1. What do you want in it? I plan on modding it and trying to force it onto mine to test it, so I wanna know what you guys want.
2. What do you want removed? I know there is some bloat, Do you still want it or do you want me to make 2, 1 with and 1 without?
3. What do you want as standard? Pdf reader, file manager, custom browser, etc.
The sooner you guys tell me the more work I'll put into it.
I'll try to have a beta posted by the middle of next month, it may take longer as I'm no expert in coding even though windows is a hell of a lot easier.

The registry will already be changed for interop. Thats a standard.
I dunno if that's in your possibility but the camera performance in pictures is awfully horrible. It's been addressed that's a software problem, can it be fixed?

I've seen this posted. One thing many don't say cause they don't wanna get hopes up is everything can be fixed. It just takes some time.

I take that for a maybe. If you manage to do what your trying to do consider making a "Donate" button. Be careful anyway others have bricked their devices with no-access to the bootloader (so no turning back).

Means eventually, over time yes its achievable. At this very moment, no, but in the future yes it can be fixed.
Until access to the bootloader can be obtained without consequence, I'm leaving it as is.
I guess getting it unlocked is the biggest thing. Once we can put WP7 Root Tools in we can use the SDK to deploy whatever XAP's we want. Won't need a registry editor since it (WP7 RT) already has one and a file browser. Good luck, we're all counting on you.
A working compass driver.
Ok, so yeah... my phone is now a paperweight. Can't turn it on, can't connect to my pc, cant do anything. A tad bit pissed now. The only thing that kinda makes me not care is that it was free but on the downside in my drunken stupor I broke my computer... So yeah. Really mad at that fact. So, I'm sitting at work bored out of my mind... Gotta find a replacement phone quickly. So I guess I'm out... Sorry Guys. Glad I messed up my phone and not someone elses.
