Just upgraded from HTC Magic to ATT Nexus One - Nexus One General

Ordered it yesterday, came this morning (free overnight on the nexus in the US )!! First thing i said when I opened the box was WOW. This phone is so thin and sexy, it makes my magic look obese. I plugged in the charger and waited ~ 1 hour for the battery indicator to pop up green as was recommended by the instructions in the box.
Popped in my SIM, and within minutes was up and running. So much faster than the magic, everything is flawlessly smooth and quick.
3g coverage is super strong for me (Los Angeles beach cities here [redondo, hermosa, manhattan] ) and have not had any issues with it dropping to edge, or anything of the sort in the last 5-6 hours of use. I've seen the bars drop from full to 2 or 3, to back up, but hey thats cell reception for us, isnt it? Call quality is perfect, etc etc.
Just wanted to say hello to everyone, gonna wait a few days to make sure everything is working properly, then ill root it. So happy to have gotten the nexus, and I damn well better be after dropping 580 bucks.

I actually did the same thing this past Thursday. I had my Magic for about a year and in the last 2 months I owned it, I flashed it to the Nexus One ROM which only made me want an N1 even more. There is no comparison between the 2 phones really!

I finnaly upgraded from a G1 on early Saturday, I'm assuming the phones coming Tuesday (sadly).. can't wait though ^.^

Share your experience of N1 - Was it worth it?

Were you happy with all the features of the N1?
Which country and what network are you using it on?
Do you feel that you wished you had waited a little longer for the, say, iPhone 4g?
I am still awaiting delivery - and so just wondering if this is a phone which will be worth keeping for years - or should I just give it to my dad and wait for the next Iphone or other phones yet to come out (didn't help with some of the features not being enabled in the UK ), though something tells me when I see it, I will want to use it ^^.
Without a doubt, completely and totally worth it. I've had a G1 for the past year, rooted and running Cyanogen's ROMs for most of that time, and this is a huge step up.
I'm one of the lucky ones, I suppose, as I have none of the touchscreen or 3g issues that have been reported. The only problem I have so far is that it SEEMS as if the stock music player stops playing when you turn the screen off unless you use the stock headphones. Not so swift...and I don't see options to change this.
I'm on T-Mobile in the US.
Nexus One FTW!!
Excellent phone after some tweaks.
cyanogen 5 beta 2 rom (JIT disabled as seemed a bit buggy).
corgal and motocal along with android agenda widget to get fully integrated exchanged sync with calendar and company directory.
klaxon alarm clock
home++
digital clock widget (very clean)
spotify (great music program if supported in your country)
n1 torch (strobe is just brilliant)
ICE on lock screen to display emergency contact stuff
rings extended to fully customize all rings and notifications
locale (this **** is genious!)
running great on telia 3g in sweden. Im guessing its around 2-3 years before they have full 4g support in sweden (only central stockholm at present) so 3g is fine for now.
My life has been all unicorns and rainbows wince I bought the nexus one.
Haha good stuff. Just got an e-mail 5 minutes ago stating my Nexus One has shipped, so, fingers crossed - Friday I have it !
Couldnt love mine more
It's a work of Art, Innovative, and an Awesome device to start out 2010 with!!
As someone coming from Symbian and WM, this phone has met all of my expectations and more. It's fast, has some really great applications like Dolphin and Layar, and is just fun to use. Definitely not the perfect phone, but the best one I've used thus far. (In fact I'm posting from money right now.)
However, I'm on ATT so no 3G for me, but I'm around wifi almost constantly so that mitigates this most of the time.
The ladies get wet when I show them the Dildroid app. The 3.7 AMOLED screen makes a BIG difference over the G1 and myTouch. My life has changed ever since I got the N1 I get laid all the time now. My only regret the fact that I didn't use a condom that one time and got chlamydia.
sure
its worth it. from iphone to nexus. i do kinda miss my apps and how i get them precracked and free for my iphone.
but then again, tmo's 3g is all im after(iphone 3g dont get 3g on tmo). i got the nexus unlocked for 529$ + tax. so i dont need to pay 25$extra every month for the data plan for another two years.. 25$ times 24 months is 600$ <----makes the nexus virtually free
well worth it!
i do have the grandfathered 5.99tzones and it works! 3g all day!

And to the OP's question, yes.
i would have sex with this phone if i could
that should sum up my experience
I am with everyone else - purchased unlocked and switched to T-Mobile....so far this phone is outstanding. Android as an OS has impressed me thus far (outside of the corporate calendar oversight) and the build quality of the phone is quite good compared to some of the phones HTC has been pumping out in the last few years.
Love it even though my phone will arrive tomorrow at my office
I did play with my friends before I made the purchase but what can I say I'm a huge HTC fan and this one is by far the best phone in my eyes
@7Wonders: What did you search for, or where did you find ICE for the lock screen?
yes it was worth it.
it is the best phone i'Ve ever had. The speed, the screen, the feel and cyanogen is what i love!
im in germany on o2
It's very good, far and away the best mobile I've ever owned.
However, it's not perfect; the screen seems to lose calibration randomly, the battery life can be great one day, and rubbish the next, and it has the stupid HTC thing of the volume buttons still working when the device is locked!
There are more little quirks, but they're more issues with Android I guess (crappy media support - I shouldn't have to convert my divx/avi/mkv files if I want to play them on the N1), but all in all I'm quite a hard person to please, gadget wise, and overall I'm very happy with it.

To answer the OP. I'm very happy with mine. Far better for my needs than the Nokia N900 or iPhone 3GS or any Blackberry.
A joy to use every day.

They don't come that quick do they? I ordered mine yesterday morning and get the shipped e-mail about 11pm, but it only left Cincinnati this morning (I don't know where it heads next...) I'm not expecting it until next week now.

best buy sucks COULDNT GET MY EVO

went to pick my preordered evo but they told me their systems r not functioning because sprint and bestbuy were activating too many lines at the same time.what a luck huh...... and im working full time this weekend so no chance to drop by bestbuy.jsut my day.F$%@#$KKKKK!!!
dude why dint you get it at radio shack? i woke up at 6 am i got it for 150 because i preordered it with 50$ and got a 20 dolar gift card and 10% on accesories and had no problem at all to activated....
same thing is happening at the shack only the early ppl got it.. i tried to get mine at 9 and they couldnt do it...
yea i should've preordered at the shack but too bad for me.so pissed off that im thinking of to wait for the HTC SCORPION
Same thing here....11 AM appt. BB Maize Rd - Wichita......systems are down. 2-2.5 hr wait for activation...started at 9AM. About the time Cali opened. They are going to hold my phone until I can get there after work. Felt retarded leaving work to go get a phone as it was. Oh well.
My Best Buy called in to Sprint and activated over the phone - took about 15 minutes.

i did the EXACT same thing! except me, my dad and my brothers rolled up to the RS expecting to wait, there was NOBODY there.(except employees) in the time it took us to activate 5 lines, not one person came into the store. i'm very disappointed dallas!!
they had to try a couple times with mine but after the system going down for 10min twice in the middle it took almost an hour for me to get everything done. But I also had picked the lowest sales volume store in the area they only had 13 preorders spread through the whole day. They had time to wait on me.
that is a bummer. i was the first to get my preorder at RS. but as soon as the second guy was let it to do his. the system started to slow down. RS uses "snap" for sprint activation and to my understanding so does BB. if thats the case, could be a long day for ppl because when "snap" slows down, it REALLY slows down...
Why not take the phone unactivated and do it on your own time via Sprints site? Are they not allowing that?
No they have to activate in store, part of the deal with sprint.
We ran 7 of our 8 EVO sales fine in SNAP, though it was beginning to take ~5-10 minutes to load each page. Only one customer (of course mine) ran into so many problems that it took 3 hours to complete... I felt so bad
NOTE TO EVERYONE: If you're trying to upgrade a line that has a Data or SMS block on it, CALL SPRINT AND HAVE THEM REMOVE IT FIRST. It's more hassle than it's worth to handle it in store
Yeah took me about an hour. Took the first dude who came in about an hour. System was sloooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.....but the phone is beautiful...
Currently having activations issues in Northern CA RS store.. Spent an hour in the store and they are still bogged down.. Hoping to snag the phone at lunch.
Good that I took an appointment for 7.30pm today. Hopefully we should be good by that time.

Yeah I went there at 9 but I think I was more dedicated than you. After 3 hours and 2 breaks (walking around the mall for food) I walked out with my baby at 12:30.
Great day.
My girlfriend went and got mine took 30 minutes and this was at 10am eastern time. By the way, this was at Radio Shack
(Now I am a cool kid with the sent from evo at the bottom )

I was the first one in my BB and had to port my number..it took over an hour to do everything and the people after me couldnt do anything.
bad thing is i cant make any outgoing calls or send any outgoing txt msgs..i can only receive calls and txts..
they told me it would be a few hours..its been over 4 hours and still wont work
so its half way working i guess..
walked in the store at 8, out the door at 820 with my phone.
of course, i was a new line. only weird thing about mine was porting my number from tmo.
i miss the colors on my nexus one. wish the evo's screen was amoled. but, i do like the size, i have to admit.

Dude imagine goig from the nexus to palm pre, and then to evo wow such a difference in the 3

Thoughts? Evo or Epic.

So I know you have all heard the Evo vs Epic story, but i'm in a bit deeper than most. I purchased the phone outright, but to try and save a few pennies on it I had sold back my Pre and Hero to Sprint. That being said I have no backup phone so I have 30 days to decide what to go with. According to the coverage maps my place of work and house both say I am in good coverage, however that is not the case. When I first got the phone I was getting zero reception in my room and spotty coverage throughout the rest of my house. At work my phone is constantly beeping in my pocket telling me that I am dropping my signal. This is the part where I am confused..over the past week and half of using the phone it almost seems that the phone seems to be holding a better signal? Over the past 3 or 4 days my signal within my house a bit stronger and when I first enter my room to go to bed at night I have a signal but it eventually drops out completely. Am I delirious or is this possible? Mind you I had no issues with my Hero, Touch Pro, or Pre in these same places. I work along side a few people who have Evo's and I have been running tests and they are pulling a much stronger signal than me. Basically I have till the end of the month to make a decision..first and foremost I need a phone that works, but I waited for the Epic because, in my opinion, it is superior to the Evo. Is it possible that with future updates that signal/reception could improve? Any other comments/opinions? Thanks.
As an old Evo owner I can tell you that the Evo has received about 3 or 4 radio updates since release. Its initial service was about the same as the Epic's currently.
As for updates (radio aside), they should come, most likely with Froyo as why rush to fix a bunch of stuff in 2.1 when 2.2 should literally be a few weeks off.
The development community is far less potent with the epic for obvious reasons. We absolutely need a custom recovery for rom development and until that happens you won't see anything as we just don't have an easy way to flash to the device. Unfortunately that is beyond my capabilities right now so hopefully with Verizon launching their version we will get some love as the two devices are more similar than the GSM counterparts.
On the one side the Epic needs custom roms far less than the evo. It however needs some updates from Samsung and Sprint. Double edge sword I guess.

Wrong Note Received!!!

After drooling over the Note via virtually by watching a ton of youtube videos as well as reading up on everything about it I could find, I finally was ready to buy it (after had borrowing the money to get it). I knew I wanted the GT-N7000 version over the US AT&T model, mainly because of the better processor and I really like that Video Maker app, as well as a bunch of other things. I ordered my International Note through Amazon, with Prime Shipping! I placed the order for it last Wednesday afternoon, but it was not scheduled to arrive until Today, Monday. Woke up early, just to make sure I was handed the package and it wasn't thrown to my front door, ... I immediately felt something was wrong when I saw the box. It was in a longer than needed rectangular box, with both sides pushed in, to where you could actually reach in and pull the phone out of the box.
When I opened the box, too look at what was in there, first thing I noticed was that the phone box was not plastic wrapped, second thing, the AT&T logo on the box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wasn't really upset as I should of been, but the feeling of waiting over the weekend for Monday to come started back up again, as I knew I was going to have to return this phone, and wait for it to go through the process of mailing it back, waiting for the refund to go through, then reordering it from someone else, and waiting for it to arrive again.
The dealer I bought it from was MasterDeals Inc on Amazon. I will definitely not be buying anything from them in the future.
What a huge letdown this was, after having that NOTE FEVER for several weeks, then for it to end this way was a big disappointment. I hope the next one that gets shipped to me is the correct model.
I got to hold it for but a brief instance, my baby and I will meet again soon.
Sorry to hear that, it should all get sorted out as the product you purchased was a N-7000 and not the ATT Note.
Man that really sucks I am planning on ordering another note from amazon for my wife and I want to make sure that doesn't happen to me. I just noticed the reseller who is selling through Amazon that I was planning on buying through has two different pictures one for att and one for international ill have to be careful. Good luck on your return I hope they get you all sorted quickly it really is an amazing device.

When ordering online they don't specify which version it is? I'm sorry to hear that ... regardless, I'm sure it'll get straightened out.
UPDATE: 4/6/12
After what happened, which I posted above, I am glad to say I am now a VERY HAPPY GT-N7000 Note owner.
How it happened.
After opening the package which I had received on Monday 4/2/12, I immediately packaged it back up and sent it back, due to the fact that the seller had sent me the AT&T model, which I did not order.
Amazon's customer service emailed me the pre-paid UPS postage to include on the box, and I went to the nearest UPS drop off location and sent it. This was about 3:45 pm.
On Wednesday, at 12:00 PM, I had received a email from Amazon saying they had received the return, and were processing it and would email me back once the refund was submitted. That evening around 6:00 pm, I had received the email saying the amount I spent on the phone, $609.99, was being refunded back to the card I had used for the purchase. That was good enough for me.
3 Hours later or so, I reordered the Note from Yapper Wireless on Amazon. This was after receiving response emails from them that they were in fact selling the GT-N7000 model, so I placed the order around 9:00 pm that night.
Since I am a Amazon Prime member, I only had to pay $3.99 to have my order sent via 1 day shipping, which I did, as I wanted it before the weekend.
Thankfully, it did arrive this morning, Friday, at 11:00 am. Keeping my fingers crossed, I opened the box, and immediately seen that it was in fact the GT-N7000 WHITE model.
The phone box was not plastic wrapped, and after looking in the box, I noticed why, the seller took out the international plug adapter, and replaced it with the US Samsung one, which I was happy about.
Next I installed a screen protector, which I am not sure I will keep on, then installed my 32GB Samsung Class 10 Micro SD card, and installed my Straight Talk sim card. Followed the instructions on the Straight Talk website, activated the sim, picked the $45 a month Unlimited plan, and entered the APN settings that can be found on this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487293 Thanks to Hirudin for posting it.
I first tried a call, Worked.
Text message, Worked.
Took a pic and sent it (MMS), Worked.
Again, I was VERY HAPPY! It's feels good to have unlimited minutes again, after being SO limited as I was with my 300 minutes a month $35 Virgin Mobile plan.
Next step, downloaded Speed Test to test the network.
Turned off WiFi (of course), Began Test.
I noticed in the status bar, It was going from 3G to H+, but then stayed on H+, this test was taking inside my house.
Results:
3.1 MBPS Down
1.2 MBPS Up
I am located in Fremont, CA .. the Bay Area.
I again, VERY HAPPY with these speeds, I would be lucky to get 100 KBPS Down with Virgin Mobile, which of course runs off of Sprints network.
I then went to the Google Play store on my computer, signed in with the email associated with my phone, and went to Devices under account settings, I was once again VERY HAPPY to see that it shows my carrier as AT&T!
The phone is on the charger now, I haven't really got into it yet, but I can say that this is definitely the BEST phone I have ever owned, and yes I did once own and use the iPhone 4. I am so excited to FINALLY have my very own Note, and I can't wait to start using it and customizing it to my liking. I look forward to May 22, when Samsung announces the S III, and hopefully whatever specs this new phones has, hardware wise, will make it into the Note 2. Quad Core/2GB Ram/12-16 Megapixel Camera/etc. I just hope the Note 2 at least keeps the same size screen, if not go slightly bigger!
Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to share my experience with everyone, and yes, the Note/Straight Talk combination works flawlessly! Highly recommended if you don't like spending $100+ on your phone bill.
Long Live the Note/Hail to the King Baby!
Gotta love those happy endings.
And don't worry about the phone being on 3G, mine does the same. It switches to H+ when it starts pulling data, and goes back to 3G when it's finished; i think it's a power saving measure.
Wow from disaster to awesome, all sorted within the week. Sounds like you and amazon worked really fast to fix the problem. Congrats on getting the right note and I could almost feel your optimism while reading through lol!
Too many times ppl get hung up on bad mouthing a company due to a problem and take ages to get it fixed. You on the other hand named and shamed vowing never to buy from again (same thing I would do) and then got on with getting your phone
There really is no going back to a smaller device for ppl who use their phone other than calls. Loved my Dell Streak for year and a half and now I love my note. 5" is the future.
Enjoy your device buddy wd.

Yeah, I am glad it all worked out in the end. I know what you mean about not going back to a smaller device, I don't think I could do it, or at least I know I wouldn't want to.
Actually it bounces back from H+ to 3G as soon as your phone is idle for a couple of seconds or your throughput is below a certain threshold. This is controlled by the network and not your phone. The wireless medium is shared between many users, this is done to free up the limited resources for the users actually needing H+ and throw back everyone who doesn't need it to 3G.

Prospective Buyer Questions

Hey guys I had a few questions hoping you can help me with.
Right Now i have a Galaxy Nexus with VZ and im sitting on an upgrade, looking to purchase the VZW Note 3 as the successor to my G-Nex.
1) Does anyone know of any deals happening on them currently? So far the best price ive found on upgrade was $249.99 (Amazon) - If there are going to be some Black Friday deals going on where I can get it cheaper (maybe 199.95?) Then Ill wait the extra few weeks, but if people think its pretty set in stone right now, then ill just go ahead and order it
2) Is the VZW Note 3 a Global Phone? Im planning a trip to Europe this summer and curious if my phone will work there.. I probably need to get an international SIM card or something from VZW for it to work right?
3) How is the Signal Quality? My G-Nexus Signal SUCKS, my GFs HTC Phone blows mine out of the water when it comes to signal strength and overall general reception, just curious if the Note 3 has better Radios then previous Samsung Phones.,. I thought the general consensus is the Samsung Phones have the worst reception, Moto Phones have the best, and HTC falls in the middle between the two
4) I consider myself a power user ---> moderate / heavy usage. I know all the reviews say Battery life is great but whats the real world expectation with these? Will i get a full day of use out of it or will I be charging it at 8 aclock at night? I know the battery on my G-Nex was so bad that I always kept half the stuff turned off, brightness to a minimum and even put a plain black background on my phone to conserve energy and still dont get a full day out of it
5) What do you NOT like about the phone? That you may not of known coming into it
Thanks Guys! Oh and BTW have they officially said the N3 will be getting 4.4 or any timeframes for that release??

Well first off wrong section....
But now going into what you asked:
1. I have heard rummors that Best Buy and Radio Shack will be having specials for black friday...not sure of the price but it might be a good idea to research it.
2. Yes the Note3 is a global phone...and can used since it works with a sim card...btw i believe that all Verizon LTE phones are unlocked.
3. The Signal quality i think atleast on my device very good...then again i live in a big city...Miami.
4. The Note3 has a 3200 milli amp battery, which is considerable bigger then the GNex. That said im a heavy user always on the phone doing something i get about 15hrs, so yes the battery should last for you.
5. Most of the annoying things on the phone have been fixed by our Great Developers.
As for the Note3 getting the 4.4 KitKat update that would be a yes but as of now there is no set date....on a side note it would be really funny to see that Verizons Flag Ship Samsung device not getting 4.4. And if that is the case dont worry we usually get those too..
Welcome to the Best Place for Android Dev...!!!!!
I had a Galaxy Nexus and the biggest complaint was battery life. I had 3 batteries I carried daily.
This phone has worlds better battery life but the mod community is growing it is nowhere near the GNex.
Yeah im running 4.4 on my G-Nex right now, I love the features but its buggy and even on older roms like 4.3.1 and all that the battery life is horrendous - If i take it off the charget at 8 AM i have it plugged in at 6 that night or its dead and thats not even using it like crazy
Also the only deals I see (including Radio Shack) are for new line activations, nothing for regular line upgrades
I made the mistake of getting an 16gig iPhone 5S on launch day but just traded a guy on Craigslist for a like new Note 3 with spigen neo case. Verizon even allowed me to add total insurance coverage which shocked me being that its a Craigslist phone.
But the best deal in my opinion was the 30% verizon coupon that was active for a few days after release. Some people got the phone for $100 when they selected in store pickup. I'm sitting there ready to throw the 5S against the wall because I was so upset.

I upgraded from a galaxy Nexus so hopefully I can help you out.
1 radio shack is supposed to have some good black Friday deals plus they will give you money for devices.
2. The note 3 is a global phone. I have an att note 2 and my sim will work with data included just by adjusting the proper apn settings.
3. The note 3 must have the same antennas as the Nexus because it's just as bad as my Nexus. I'm a bus driver so I travel a lot. I have a Motorola bionic which sees 4g often but the note 3 will be in 3g it's very frustrating. And in big cities Verizon is horrible because they have more users being the largest wireless provider and all.
4. This phones battery is amazing. The standby time is even better it won't budge.
5. I just hate the fact that the antennas suck. They really do.

Best thing to do is go ahead and purchase one and play around with it for 14 days. Battery life will vary, every person uses their phone differently. Also signal will vary depending upon your location. Some people say signal/speed is better, some say worse. Black Friday is around the corner and you can probably get the price matched if the price does go down. Now, go ahead and grab one and enjoy all this Note 3 goodness!

Whaaaaat? I upgraded from a Galaxy Nexus too, and it was never able to hold an LTE signal throughout my house. It would intermittently connect to LTE if I was next to a window on one side of my house, but that was it. Other places in my house it would drop to 3G signal that it could barely hold on to.
My new Note 3 holds an LTE signal throughout my house and still has great call quality while I hold the phone inside my clothes dryer (yes that's the worst signal spot in my house and I like to test phones by calling my landline while the phone is in the dryer.)
I think you must have a bad one because the radio in the Note 3 is miles ahead of anything else I've ever used.

As I stated I travel a lot. Do I think it's a better phone than the Nexus absolutely. But it doesn't hold a candle to the bionic's signal and that's a 2 to 3 year old phone. I constantly see the bionic holding a strong signal and the note 3 is on 3g. My Nexus was the same way.

Hmm I guess I should try a bionic then just for kicks, lol.
But yeah it is true that moto is known for great radios so I can't really argue.

Just don't think I'll be going Samsung again. Antennas should be the most important thing id think.

I don't know why people are complaining about antennas. Coming from the Gnex, the antennas on this baby are above and beyond. Bsmith you likely have a defective radio in your N3, or simply a subpar radio. Logically it would have to be that because everyone that owns a N3 isn't complaining about reception (myself included).
To the OP - getting this phone is a no brainer, coming from ANY phone. I've never in my life experienced battery life/screen on time like this (I've gotten 8+ hours screen on time on a single charge). It also flies in every way, and you just can't go wrong with 3GB of RAM and the multitude of multitasking options at your fingertips. Multitasking is very important to me, and there's no other phone that can do it like this. For years I've felt the devices and software I've had just didn't get it quite right. Finally they have. Multi-window and pen window are ingenious, and they work without a single hiccup or stutter. This thing is a monster.
And if I went into every useful setting and tweak on the STOCK rom (out of the box), I could go on for hours. Add to all that the s-pen with all its features (I'm an artist so I'm in love with it), and the N3 is the champion among champions.
I will literally never get another brand/model. When the N4 comes out, I'll be the first in line. I've never been this impressed with a mobile device.
