Quite simply, I've wanted to play my downloaded itunes TV shows, which are in .m4v format. Searched high and low. I'm not a developer, just a savvy end user, but I was surprised at how few offerings exist for multi-format video players on Android.
Here's what I've found so far. What am I missing?
1. BluMedialab.com 's Media Player v 1.6 - costs approx $3.50 USD - claims to play .m4v files. I bought it, it doesn't. Uninstalled and got refund.
The player that plays more media on your DROID then other apps: from your SD Card or streaming from web.
SD card: WMA, MP3, MP4, M4V, (small!) WMV, MID, 3GP (some)
Streaming: WMV, M4V, MP4 (also non-progeressive!)
Has a built-in SDcard browser, video RSS reader and webbrowser with Google search.

They say their new TRIAL version is more advanced... So why they continue to sell any version at all is beyond me. But they do. This should be highly discouraged in my view. The moment it's clear an app doesn't perform as advertised, to sell it in the store is morally wrong, and I think such app developers should be economically punished by horrible reviews, and hammered with email til they take down their pay versions. It's ridiculous.

The comments from the Core Codec site explain why multi-format video players are not prevalent yet for Android. I have to say, really? After a whole year, and Google can't enrich their OS to play videos properly?

My i760 came with a small wav player that will pop up in Total Commander (or any file explorer) and play the file. I hear there are some "search" options available if I'm not mistaken HINT! HINT!
It is encoded with the latest WMV9 codec, you won't be able to play this on anything but Windows Media Player 10 or later.... NO PPC player will play it without conversion.... not even CorePlayer (it only supports upto WMV8)
If you really must get it playing on PPC go get a video converter and put it into a useful format like mpg or h264.

Which device you r using?
if it works on pc windows media player, have u tried using windows movie maker/ windows media encoder to transfer to your phone, works for me

I didn't mean for the file size to increase so much, but I wasn't sure what sort of codecs a PPC could handle. I tried a newer Xvid codec at first, and it didn't work. So I reverted to a PPC-specfic AVI container with a generic MPEG4 codec. Hopefully you have 5MB of free space somewhere.

I know it's a ridiculous navigation process, but that's what they make you do. In exchange, you get a free program that does a decent job with converting files. Just toy with it. Test it on some small video files and see what looks best for you.

.flv files use different codecs. You can check for yourself by opening the .flv file with Media Player Classic on your PC and check the file properties. They use FLV1 (Flash Video 1) or FLV4. FLV1 uses the Sorenson codec. FLV4 uses the ON2VP6 codec.
TCPMP and CorePlayer support FLV1. (Youtube uses FLV1).
For FLV4 you need Adobe's Flash Lite 3, which is still in beta release and only works with Opera 9.5. Unfortunately, there is no Opera 9.5 build for WM standard. Until Opera 9.5 is released for WM standard, you will need to convert the FLV4 files to a different format.

If you download double twist to your computer, it will automatically format the video format to watch on your phone. Its super simple.
They need to be in mp4 format.

divx is a avi which is not supported. I think there maybe a app that plays them but im not sure that its stable. Covert them to mp4.
I believe Meridian Noble plays AVI, not sure about DivX encoding.
It has to be encoded as mp4 and not divx or xvid. There is no codec in android currently to read a divx or xvid file.

Video support in Android just plain sucks in general imo.
i think yxflash supports divx, not sure how well it plays though and you have to pay for it

Not necessarily any developers fault (not that you where blaming one) but its difficult to make an Android app run native code which is needed for decoding. The JVM from what I understand cannot handle that kind of work so it is passed on thru Native Code. Not impossible, just difficult.
Something to clarify: The difference between audio/video format and file container.
MKV, AVI, MP4, 3GP .. these are all containers. This DOES NOT specify the video or audio format.
I believe the best core supported media format is h.264 AVC video with AAC audio in the MP4 file container. You might be able to use different file containers or audio/video formats so you will just have to experiment.
I have not tried doubleTwist for video encoding yet, but you can find A LOT of info on video encoding over at the doom9.org forums. MediaCoder is also an excellent freeware application which has some device specific versions.

.mp4 format is the proper format I do believe.

Thanks for the replies. I'm very surprised how few reviewers, or even end customers care or seem to be aware about hardware video support. Tegra 2 single-handedly killed my interest in every current gen Android tablet; if I wanted to transcode my hundreds of movies I'd buy an 'i' device!
I agree Mobo player is best of i've used but when i use it with bluetooth stereo the video just plays in fast forward mode and there is no sound in the earphones, same with summer player a.k.a best vidoe player pro. Any body else faced the sam e issue ?
what about Hardware acceleration on ICS?
Is the mobo player still recommended? Or is there something new?
I use MX Player, but I haven't tried a 720p mkv yet. I have a feeling its performance is similar to Mobo Player's.

When MS gave away Media Center for free I did not get it because I do not use media center. Today I have a need to use Movie maker and found that Movie Maker cannot read mpeg2 file unless I install Media Center, however Media Center is no longer free. Is there another option that can allow Movie Maker to read mpeg2 without costing money and safe (virus free)?

Yes, K-Lite allows playback of mpeg2, but Movie Maker still cannot open mpeg2.

I would stay away from any codec pack, incl the popular ones like K-Lite or whatever. The preferred filter set at the moment is LAV Filters (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156191) which uses libavformat (from ffmpeg). It's been out for over two years, and is still under active development.
Secondly, use http://codecguide.com/windows7_preferred_filter_tweaker.htm (also works for Win8) to remove extraneous codecs (say, from codec packs), and to prioritize desired codecs.
Lastly, suggest moving away from the built-in bundleware you get with Windows. The codecs may be there, but the software may be hardwired to work only with other MS stuff. For free stuff, a good place to start is here,

Shark007 has switched to LAV Filters. The author, nevcairiel, is actively engaged in LAVF's thread on Doom9 (last post of today). That's the best place for support, since he's the dev. One caveat is that Doom9 is fairly hardcore, and noobs who don't search before asking questions aren't treated kindly. In that, it's probably better to use a "downstream" support source like Shark007.
This isn't a slight against Shark. He's been a respected member of Doom9 for a long time. I was using his custom matrices for DivX and XviD way back when.

Yea, he has his own support forum on his website, and has spent a long time working with me to overcome various issues.
I installed K-Lite, it uses lav, but still no mpeg2 decoding in movie maker.
Starting with Vista, MS' intention is to gradually replace DirectShow with Media Foundation. While LAVF supports some of MF's elements (DVXA 2, EVR), it doesn't currently support MF, although the dev said that was on the list of to-dos. It's likely that Movie Maker, being a built-in Win app, uses MF instead of DirectShow. The other possibility is that it's hardwired to WMC, as already said.

Codec problems can be troubleshoot with GraphStudio or GraphStudio Next (2nd being an updated fork of 1st). Google for these. These are technical tools, and there is no support for them.

In any case, the end solution probably remains the same: Ditch Movie Maker, or cough up the $10 for WMC.
