Att Nexus One ATT and T-mobile speed test. - Nexus One General

Lets keep this thread clean, pics or info only about the differences between the t-mobile n1 and the ATT n1. Hopefully this thread will help out people to see the difference between the n1 for both services. Reception wise. And to compare how are signal strength between the two phone.
I just received the tmo version, and just ordered this after the ATT version (since im still an att customer) and will return the tmo version as soon as i get the att one (should be by friday). And cancel my new tmo account.
So tonight ill post up tmobile speeds and as soon as i get ATT n1 ill post that up as well. Anybody else willing to add in please do so!
So lets start this:
Area: Southern California
T-mobile nexus one stock rom 2.1update1
Baseband: 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2
Build number ERE27
Signal 2 bars on 3g (best spot in my house, ill upload ones tested outside of the house)

}

Thats horrible... I get 1800 kbps download and 640upload in portland OR.... ill post later.....tmobile... good thing ya getting your att one....

i get great download speeds but much slower upload speeds. my most recent test was 4.39 Mbs d/l & .33 Mbs u/l. see pics in this thread. i'm using T-Mo N1, MoDaCo Desire ROM-Alpha 12 w/ERE27 Radio and 3G access in Dallas.

yes it is HORRIBLE!!! thats why im glad i didnt cancel my att account and that att n1's are now available and that i have time to return the phone / close my tmo account with out a huge chunk out of my wallet.
i guess its meant to be?!?! lol
Anyways, back to the thread, keep em coming, and hopefully if people around your area decided to get the n1, can be assured that they wont be dissatisfied with the service. Or at least have a little in deciding which carrier branding to get.

Ok reposting tests.
Area: Southern California
T-mobile nexus one stock rom 2.1update1
Baseband: 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2
Build number ERE27
Signal 2 bars on 3g
(best spot in my house, ill upload ones tested outside of the house)
2nd test
(i couldnt wait for the ATT version to arrive, so i popped the ATT SIM card on the tmobile n1)
Everything the same even the spot where i tested it from.
Signal: EDGE full bars
As you can see this is just sad for my case. ATTs EDGE beats out T-mobiles 3g (2 bars). So im guessing the ATT n1 will the choice of phone for me.
Friday is the delivery date of the phone, will post the results by then.

Why is T-mobile's upload so much faster than the download? Is that normal?

I was wondering that too.....my best upload was 1230 kbps while my best dl is 800 kbps. separate times but both with full bars on 3g.
But tmobile will be cancelled on friday . so i didnt bother calling them and asking them why is that.

the tmo band n1 one on the att network was getting .20, so very big difference. was good for light web browsing and email, thats about it.
oh those are in mbps

Well this would only be useful for someone that lives in the same area as you. All carriers reception varies widely depending on where you're located. For instance, here is what I'm getting on T-Mobile and why I won't be changing carriers anytime soon:

AT&T N1 in Rancho Cordova, CA
793 download and 800 upload on speedtest.
I had AT&T on TMo N! but only had edge of course so can't compare.

Atlanta, GA
Sitting in my home office, brick house, full bars.
Test 1
Download: 2618kbps
Upload: 1316kbps
Test 2
Download: 3349kbps
Upload: 1210kbps
Damn, this thing is fast. Maps is essentially instantaneous in updating the page.

Here's what I got on my AT&T N1. The bottom result is of course on Wifi. The rest are on 3G.
The results are in Mbps.

Thats true, but thats why i wanted more people to share their results and please include your area. So the more people we have sharing the more area we get covered. And hopefully whoever is browsing here will most likely be in an area that someone had already posted.
**And to everyone, sorry to be a pain, but could you please include area, how strong is the signal and either 3g or EDGE, which version of the phone (att/tmo) and which carrier you are using. That way speedtests, pictures, and info are all in one post! thanks!**

2900 kbps down and 957 kbps up on ATT in Columbus, OH
That's using speedtest.net app.
I was getting over 3000 down lastnight. ATT is awesome. I dunno why people give it such a bad wrap...

All depends on where you are but I believe AT&T generally has more backhaul to their towers than T-Mobile.
Unless they're experiencing congestion, then AT&T is often faster. But in major cities like NYC, AT&T does sometimes have congestion problems.
In some areas, you'll see extraodinarinly fast speeds on T-Mobile (5-6mbps in Philadelphia and parts of New York). Over the next several months T-Mobile is increasing backhaul to their towers so you'll see speeds like this all over their network soon enough.
That's really the bottom line here...and if they have good coverage in your area my preference would be to T-Mobile, having used both networks.

I am in the 626 so-cal area and I typically get around 800/600 through T-Mobile. My friends on att get similar numbers on their iPhones.

Tests from NYC and Northern NJ on T-Mobile:

T-Mobile 3G - Kansas City, KS
Down: 1479 kbps
up : 223 kbps
http://twitpic.com/18enyi

I'm getting 1580 down and 1740 up in Denver, CO using AT&T N1, 3G, full bars.

And your phone isn't even HSPA+ compatible, just 7.2.
I get about the same here. The HSPA+ stuff is supposed to be a bit faster.

They are "HSPA 7.2" compatible (which has already been available for a few months). They are not HSPA+ compatible (which is what's just now being rolled out in NY and other markets gradually).
However, as many users in NY are seeing, the HSPA+ turnup adds backend capability that ends up helping out the current HSPA 7.2 users reach the full potential of their connections too.

You won't see the "H" icon if you just have the stock icons on your taskbar up top...you'll need to install a custom set of taskbar icons before it will appear for you.

word. yes that's a good question...
I'm gonna see if the euro HD2 displays the stock "H" icon...if so then it should be easy to track down where it gets called up and recreate that in the US model.
Most people DON'T see anything CLOSE to 5.79Mb/s down.
The "H" icon in custom ROMs comes up erroneously. (Search, that's in plenty of old discussions in the ROM forum. I see the H daily although it's not here in Chattanooga, TN.) You can't count on the "H" in custom ROMs and you wont' see an "H" in the stock ROM. Speed testing is the only method of really knowing.
The only reliable test is tethering to a laptop or using it as a WiFi router to a laptop and doing a speed test from the laptop. Then you'll know how much your HD2 is pulling in your area, but trying to test on the HD2 its self won't give reliable numbers.
We can only get 7.2 from what I've read, but people in areas with HSPA+ are getting way closer to that 7.2 than people in any other areas. I'm seeing about 1.6Mb/s down. I'm excited about HSPA+ rollout, it gets us in good competition with Sprint 4G speeds. And reports are that the EVO is only showing the low end of those Sprint 4G speeds. So with HSPA+ we may very well be doing better than the EVO on Sprint 4G!

Thanks for the info Darnell, I didn't know the custom icon sets were displaying it incorrectly. What's funny is that some sets even show me a "3G+" icon on rare occasion.
I have to agree that a hard-wired test using a laptop is the best way to show how much you can shove down your phone's pipe. I find though that testing from the phone may give a more accurate indication of what your real-world effective speed will be in on-board apps.
I do feel confident too that once more of us are enjoying what these network upgrades can provide on our HD2's, we'll actually enjoy getting asked "Hey, is that an EVO??"
"No. This is faster"
just for the record 7.2 is not all we can get.
as sir has been advising me on the other thread similar to this one.
i have gotten 8.5mbps using hd2 in nyc,ny so either the hd2 is capable of hspa+ or theres isnt cap or block at 7.2
i must say great news ither way. im coming from sprint w touch pro, to a hd2 and do not regret leaving even with Evo coming one bit. T mobile has suprised me with there upgrade over previous years.
edit* i just did this one more time after posting, tethered to mac book pro and got this on a 7mb test.

Actually the phones displaying H on a custom rom is 100% right, the network is all HSPA regardless of speed right now.
9000Kbps is impossible with a device only capable of maybe 7400Kbps, max. You need to use a different method because mobilespeedtest.com is not accurate. Use speedtest.net

And on top of Sprint's so-called 4G network. They rely on Clear and their WiMax Network. Without Clear, Sprint's 4G network would be non-existent.
This is what i am getting with my phone tetherd with usb on my desktop. I am in brooklyn, ny. and i am happy as hell
Just for comparison this is what i get from my home cable connection.
a few years ago 10/1 was my home connection, now i get that on my phone. sprint 4g, WHAT? they should have just gone EvDo Rev B cheaper and faster than there so called 4g
man...
i cant wait to get my hd2 rockin..
these speeds got me feelin goooood...
Here, south of Indianapolis, got 250-310 data transfer yesterday with the Wi-fi
router option and Firefox browser. After being with 70-110 max I was really
amazed. This was indoors and with an average 2-3 bars H signal strength.
Can't wait for further improvements.
Maybe the HD2 has 10Mbps HSPA? That would explain the speed. The specs say otherwise but..
300Kb/s is good.. real good. Especailly when you consider that this network is being utilized by everyone with a 3G phone/smartphone. Sprint "4G" shows off really fast speed but when people actually start to get on the network it's far less impressive.. 3Mbps before the HTC Evo puts it's HD streaming load on the network.

My Little PRL Project

So with all of the PRLs floating aroundhere, especially lately, I wanted to do a bit of a project and see which one would be best for me. Here are my findings so far:
Test 1:
PRL: 60664
Download: 121.7kB/s
Upload: 83.2kB/s
Ping: 290ms
Test 2:
PRL: 01337
Download: 4kB/s
Upload: 20.2kB/s
Ping: +999ms
Test 3:
PRL: 31337
Download: 14.9kB/s
Upload: 20.9kB/s
Ping: +999ms
Test 4:
PRL: 60664 (again)
Download: 150kB/s
Upload: 87.3kB/s
Ping: 185ms
Test 5:
PRL: 60663
Download: 139.3kB/s
Upload: 73.2kB/s
Ping: 303ms
More results to come.
Info: My location is 90 miles North of Columbus, Ohio in a rural area. Sprint coverage is great here, but the internet ping time leaves something to be desired, so I am doing this project due to that.
Note: If you live within a few miles of me, then you should base your PRL choice off my data. Someone from Cali or Florida may have impressive results from PRL 01337, but that one was the absolute worst for me. Let this test be a guide for you to realize different PRLs give you different speeds.
These are my findings, and I do not believe ROM plays a factor. I also don't personally think PRI plays a factor here, since I am playing with PRL only. Radios can play a factor, and I have yet to find me a good one. Sick of the 5+ minute boot times with Fresh, reverting back to a clean install orf RegawMOD 2.1t.
Here in Austin, TX.
I actually get the best speed from Sprint's 60665 PRL. I tired VZW 01337, 31337 and 40064 and the best was Sprint. Go figure.
So Big Red obviously has more towers than Sprint, but I swear Sprints speeds are faster than VZWs. I used to tether on my BB Storm - and tether legitamatly for 29 extra a month - And only got maximum of 600kb down and 70 up. Not to mention when I was up in Canada they wouldn't let me use data at all! And Rogers and Verizon are like the same freakin company, you figure they would have a deal of some kind, but nope 1x the entire week I was there. Thought I was going to have EVDO withdraws.
01337 and 31337? hehe someone at VZ is a dork.
Project on hold due to not being able access ##775# with RegawMOD2.1t
OP updated with a new test
I'm in central kansas where alltel, now verizon, has always dominated the market. I tried both 01337 and 31337 prl's and found the original 606xx work better.

So will those Verizon PRL's give me Verizon coverage then? Where I live, Sprint has the weakest signal out of Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Yes, you would connect to VZW towers. and *2 would go to VZW Customer Service.
This is possible without crazy roaming charges is that before Alltel was consumed by VZW, they had an agreement with Sprint about sharing tower coverage or something.

The truth about WIMAX/clear?

Im letting you know ahead of time that this is a random rant. So I have been wondering what's the real deal holyfield with sprints so called wimax. I read somewhere that wimax really isn't TRUE 4g as it doesn't even max out at true 4g speeds. The most I've hit was about 5mbps. So is it really even 4g? And tmobile hspa + network is that faster that our wimax? My sister comes to my apt in my 4g area and her g2 gets about 6 mbps with her hspa. Why does it seem like gsm has way better data. We all know sprints 3g isn't really 3g its piss poor. If this LTE is supposed to beat out wimax why did sprint roll with it over LTE. I'm thinking sprint wanted to get a **** ton of subscribers so they just went with wimax cause it would roll out way before LTE but I definitely don't think wimax/clear is true 4g. I also heard the clear ceo jumped ship or something lol. If the national standard is supposedly going LTE what would sprint/clear do, will they adopt new technologied in their phones and leave wimax phones out to dry? So the real 4g is LTE and wimax just seems like it should be labeled pre4g, cause I hear LTE will be able to get 10mbps down and 3-5mbps up. That's stronger than most peoples internet eh? I am kind of pissed for paying an extra 10 bucks for 5mbps in a strong area and in my area my 4g hits only about 2. Is sprint going to be the only provider using wimax? The moral of this pointless rant is just to get my knowledge and others about the future/truth of wimax. I just want to understand how this service compares to this new LTE and tmobiles and atts new 4g network. It would be nice just to come in and drop comments on any question asked in this post instead of flame me, or post non sense.
A small search woudl have answered all questions....
First, nobody has a "true" 4G network as no 4G network reaches 100mbps yet. Another thing, Sprint is working on a WiMax/LTE hybrid network, or so it goes. Speed depends where you live. I hit 10mbps easily here in Orlando, some people can't hit above 1. Some goes for ANY network on earth.

Nah I'm pretty happy with my evo I got it late, xmas to be exact but hands down best phone I've ever owned. Just disappointed with sprints 3g because you would expect it to perform but it doesn't. Way to rub in your 12mbps against my 2 lol
I got almost 12 as you can see in my signature.
I hit 9-10 all the time in Houston. Hell I get 1-2 on 3g. And you can bet Verizon will charge for lte.
funny you should mention that gsm is always faster than sprint cdma. i was in denton tx last night for an interview and compared my evo on 3g(running gingerbread with no wimax) and i got 1566 kb down compared to his 447 kb down. denton is a college town but not exactly small. i usually get 2-5 mbps down on 4g but havent tested it lately as i am doin the gb thing
I don't mind... if Sprint goes under because of this failed investment, we'll be able to jump ship without ETFs anyways... no worries. ;P
i get 2-3 on 4g in orlando area it sucks my 3g is 1 m

maybe because there's not alot of people connected to these antennas
You guys all seem to be getting pretty good speeds. Me on the other hand I rely on 3g I might get 1 mbps on a good day and I'm happy.
The server you use on speedtest makes a huge difference as well, try to use one that has an internet backbone near it like Atlanta, DC or Chicago for the east coast. I get maybe 2 or 3mbps on speedtest with a server that is not 30 miles from here yet I get 8mbps on another that is almost 1000 miles away.
WiMAX and LTE are still considered pre-4G atm but it's an actual 4G network, all we need is a firmware update to have true 4G. at&t & t-mo on the other hand will Never have real 4G with HSPA+. btw, I get 8mbps in Orlando and on the east coast near there all the time using the atlanta and harold, ky servers, actual speeds during use vary though.

Straight Talk Quality

This is more of a question about user experience. I have had some people tell me that it is a great service alternative for anyone using an unlocked cell phone, like the gsm gnex, but I have also heard a few horror stories.
One would be a friend got double charged for one month, was refused a refund, and had terrible signal quality anywhere he went. (he used an att compatible sim and he was living in the northern area of florida.)
Any one out there have similar experience in poor customer service and signal ability/quality? My plan is to cut off my contract, buy a gsm nexus and go forward with straight talk.
I was on AT&T Straight Talk and hated it. The signal was poor and data speeds are slow. If you use even a little bit of data, Straight Talk will throttle you. The max speed I would get at times is 2mbps and sometimes even as low as 800 kbps, which is ridiculous considering it's supposed to be 4G. Thus, I immediately switch out and back to T-mobile.
I've heard that T-mobile Straight Talk is much better, that people got speeds of up to 8-10 mbps, much better than AT&T's anyways >.>

I've heard stuff like that but my usage on data per month is <1.5gb if that. I mainly use it for browsing, facebook, and app downloads. Now in my area I only have the option to get the AT&T sim package. I'm planning on buying a GSM GNex and trying it out for a month. The worst that could happen is that I have an att compatible 3G+ phone and I can turn around and sell that easy if I stick with verizon.
I guess what I worry most about is call quality, signal strength, and the ability to quick access my favorite websites. If I can get that reliably from straight talk I'll switch. Does anyone think those are too high of requirements?

What about T-Mobile? The $30 plan does pretty good and it's only 10 cents a minute after the first 100.

I don't have T-mobile in my area. No signal coverage really at all. All that I could possibly get is 2g (edge) at best.

I had the AT&T sim and you're right on both counts. With the AT&T sim I could barely get 800 kbps. I switched to the T-Mo sim and I've never been below 1700 kbps. BTW, it's not 4G, it's HSPA (3.5G).

That makes me sad. Do you know of any other gsm att 3g alternatives? I am sick of paying $130 a month for 2 lines.
It really depends on where you are. Here's mine from NYC with the AT&T SIM. Also I chose the AT&T SIM because most international phones use AT&T frequencies and also because here in NYC T-Mobile only gets EDGE in a lot of places, including my campus. I work near Radio City Hall/Central Park West and yes data speeds suffer, all the way down to 300-600 kbps, but that's forgivable given the amount of people on the network. My entire building uses AT&T. But again, it depends where YOU live. AT&T tends to have better coverage in most places (they're like Verizon but GSM), while T-Mobile has faster speeds but far less coverage:

Me -- unlocked galaxy nexus on the 30 dollar t-mobile plan, my speeds in my town at work are great.. at my house in the sticks no signal in my house, but cant complain, bout the price,,
wife ( iphone 4 ) oldest daughter ( atrix 4g ) both on straight talk.. and both rock but att coverage is perfect down here so that makes sense,,
Its all bout location,,, but its better than paying out the rear on post paid contracts lol

10 Mbps HSPA with AT&T on Atrix 4G

For the first time today I have experienced close to 10 Mbps download with AT&T for cellular download. This is pretty amazing. It tells me that:
- Additional T1 back haul are being added to increase bandwidth capacity
OR
- T3 back haul is being implemented for lte footprimt
The good news is that those of us with HSPA devices get increased bandwidth.
These test were conducted today at 4:30 pm, outdoors near West Farms Mall, West Hartford, CT USA on AT&T on the Motorola Atrix running epinter's. CM10.

HSPA:10 = HSPA Cat 10 = up to 14.4 Mbps

As my town just finally gets 3G, a slow 2mbps 3G.
That's very impressive! I'm in Australia with what is supposed to be the best mobile network and I get 1.5Mbps on the Atrix using epinter 4.1.1

Awesome. Probably all the sheep moving to their new LTE pastures, freeing up HSPA for other devices.
Sadly still 3.5 down, 1 up for me.

No lte here yet. Possibly building bandwidth for the launch or just for what will always be higher data usage as time goes by. What I do know is that At&t lte is based on full t3 to the tower (45 Mbps).

I have had the same experience in Seattle. Portland is also pretty slow.
I enjoy a rare 5Mbps download speed twice a year. Every other day of the year I never pull out more than 300kbps. It's ****ing terrible. Everyone else's phone makes mine look terrible. And I have AT&T's faux 4g here. And I live in a capital city of 300000 people!
I'm in Chicago, and I'm averaging 3-6mb on BOTH my Atrix and SGSII. I doubt that I'll see 10 anytime soon here, oh well...

I'm in Phoenix here. Recently at my office my speeds dropped to about 1.5mbps down and 1.0mbps up. It's now back up. Yesterday was 5.3mbps and 1.1mbps up and today it's at 6.3mbps down and 1.25mbps up.
I think the slight dip was due to my work being on the edge of the Phoenix LTE zone and they are supposedly pushing it past the line. I live in the heart of Phoenix though and didn't see the change (Home I get a steady 3.0mbps and the old stand by of 1mbps up)
