My HD2 was developing an issue with it's screen, white patches were appearing. So I sent it off to O2 to be repaired, and while the problem has been fixed, it's been returned with a non-glass screen with no diamond shaped etching on it like I had on the original.
Anyone else had this?

If you look closely on the HD2, the screen has fine diagonal lines etched on the glass which cross making what appears to be diamond shapes on the screen. The screen on mine isn't glass now, it's plastic and those fine lines aren't there. I was just wondering if anyone else had had a repair and had the same thing happen.
It is still mutlitouch. I'm just trying to decide if I should complain.

Are there any other notable differences? Is it more easily scratched, less transparent, more reflective, etc.?
If so, then yes, you should definitely complain.
as plastic is alot more prone to scratches, i would complain...

I understand this must be really annoying for you, but tbh I find it really interesting.
Is your new screen still capacitive? Does a normal stylus or other object still work on it? (ie. is it still resistive?)
I never realised you could get multitouch plastic screens....
i would definitely file a complain. you bought your hd2 with a glass screen and its weird that its plastic. yes there are diamond shaped etchings in the glass screen.
so all capacitive screens should be glass covered? hmm... interesting.

I had mine repaired and yes, the lines seem to be gone. I think this has to do with the improved hardware and not because its plastic.
f*ck that. complain, you bought the hd2 and you want it back the same way you bought it.

That's good to know, maybe I'm wrong about it being plastic although it doesn't feel the same. Is your's definitely still glass?
Why not post some pics here ? Wanna see it. Best would be to do the pics in various angles to a light source to see what consistency it has ............
I noticed the diamond etchings on my HD2 straight out of the box brand new, still glass though.

All capacitivie screens are made of glass - or else the technology wouldn't work since its basically a grid with electric current covering the screen, and this grid you disturb with your fingers. Plastic is NOT leading electricity so it would not work. And btw, the Samsung F480 has a Resistive touchscreen.
That's not strictly true. Neither glass nor plastic conduct electricity - but both act as a dielectric for electrostatic fields. A capacitive touch screen can theoretically work with either plastic or glass (or even air), because capacitive touch doesn't actually require that you touch the screen.

I was wondering if there was any place I could get a replacement screen cover, but not the entire screen (which looks to run ~$70). It seems like there is a piece of plastic over the screen itself and I was wondering if there is a way to replace JUST that piece of plastic.

I thought the screen was one unit. I haven't heard of a cover over the screen besides the one that comes on the phone from the factory, which I removed before using the phone. I've had my tilt for about 6 months or longer and dont have any scratches on the screen, well some tiny light ones but then again the phone gets a ride in my pocket alone without anything in there to damage it.

I guess the question is - if your screen is scratched - which piece is actually the top most? I assume it is the digitizer/touch screen layer.

Yeah, thats how most touch screens are setup if not all. They're just the touch sensor matrix which is clear infront of the LCD panel.
i got a screen cover with my tytn 2 which im sure are very cheap to pick up less then $1 but i mainly have a problem with dust getting under the side of my screen im sure you all know where i mean
im sure a screen protector costs less than £1 i got one through with my phone but i couldnt put in on without bubbles so i left it and i have noticed i have scratches on my screen being left alone aside my wallet in the pocket of my jeans. but im sure a good polish with dvd cleaner or even brasso (works wonders on psp screens) could clean up those scratches... i recommend dvd cleaner cause brasso would make a mess and also get down the sides of the screen like random crap does anyway... i found a part of a leaf there a few times you would have thought such a big opening would have been sealed my htc?
Having replaced my LCD, I can tell you that the plastic screen is indeed part of the LCD, and is not a removable component.
I have it my hand right now, and it seems there's no way to break apart the lcd into its components (lcd, digitizer, and plastic).
If you're determined to fix it, you'd have to buy a new screen.
if we speaking about the thin film, i recommend you either buy original htc or 3m product the size is 2.8"
the dvd cleaner is great idea to clean as one of the boys suggested
buy an anti-glare - so u can use it outdoor natural light conditions
get a rough texture if u use the stylus for handwriting

The onlu thing about the iphone is it's touch screen of hard glass coated with stuff to make it touch sensitive.
This looks to be hard glass too but it's very hard to see on video is there anybody who knows if it's hard glass or the same kind of touch screen as the Touch pro has...

Well the French chick in the video decribed the HD as having a better touchscreen than the diamond and it bieng almost as good as the Iphones. Although the Iphones touch screen is capacitive.
The Hd's touch screen is still pressure sensitive.
The HD's touch screen will be the same as the Diamond and Touch Pro. As the guy in the video was saying it was sensitive, he scrolled along the bottom of TF3D and it stopped going with his finger and treated it as a tap later down the line of icons. No touch screen can compare to a capacitive screen, the iPhone and G1 will always be more sensitive.

Well, "scratch" and "break" are relative, IMO. The iPhone's glass screen may have a more durable feel under normal finger usage but can shatter more easily when dropped, whereas plastics might feel cheaper but have a bit more give for better durability under sudden shock.
Resistance to scratches will depend wholly on the type of scratch abuse and choice of screen protector.
As far as the glass+capacitive coating (on the iPhone) goes, let me say that resistive touchscreens are also susceptible to damage, namely the "oil patch" where the touch-sensitive layer is subject to too much pressure and "breaks" (not immediately, but over time it loses its accuracy/sensitivity) and discoloration similar to an oil patch appears. This has happened to me on my Touch Pro, and others on their Diamonds, and I suspect it might happen on the HD as well (since it is also a flush-mounted touch-resistive display).
The capacitance screen of the iPhone also means it cannot be used with anything other than a finger, i.e. no stylus. This means that every interface has to be sized accordingly for finger user rather than being able to be smaller and more detailed for stylus use.
It's true that in the french video the menu scroller does not keep up with his finger. However, he is brushing the menu very lightly in order to demonstrate that the pressure threshold is much lower. No, it does not equal a capacitive screen, but he does specifically state that it is different to that of the diamond in terms of sensitivity. The diamond requires a lot of pressure, and you don't need a capacitive screen just to have it respond to much less pressure.

I wonder whether it would be possible for a capacitance screen to work with WinMo? I am massively jealous of the easy usability of my friend's iPhone, but at the end of the day, I use winmo programs. Capacitance screens feels like a superior technology - it just works better with your fingers

I disagree about the superior technology. As was said earlier in this thread you can't use a stylus witha captive screen or gloved fingers come to think about it. What about a combination of the 2, that would be superior tech.
I can tell you that the screen is really great. better than i thought.
It is still a resitive screen, but it feels like glass, especially after you put the screen protector which comes with the device on the screen. an as far as it goes, i think its very scratch resistent, even against fingernails and so.
It doesn't even feel like you are pressign the screen, its much more like the iphone glass display and comes very close to it.

Sorry, but it is a common misconception that capacitive touch screens cannot work with stlylii. (largely attributed to iphone not requiring or shipping with a stylus)

Ok Ok. You can use a stylus with a capacitive screen but it has to be charged i.e produce electrons. On HTC devices you can use anything thats at hand.
Like i said before i like the feeling of a capacitive screen but it does lack in key areas. A combination of the 2 screens would be the future, but i'm sure there are technical limitations to such a project.

I wear leather gloves when it is cold and I am happy that I would not need to take them off to use my phone and freeze my fingers when outside. I have seen iphone users wearing gloves taking them off to use the phone. I guess another perk to using pressure sensitive screen - warmer hands
seeing no body answered OP's question, but all came at a very close tangent, i'll take a stab at it.
HD's screen is not glass, it cannot be glass like iphone because HD requires it screen to "bend" and "depress" a little at the specific spot so the second layer can sense the pressure. the first//top layer is only a screen, touch/pressure panel is beneath that.

I didn't test ist without the screen protector (but the one which is in the package is very good and invisible, as the edges are perfectly cut.)
With the Screen protector of the packages, it seems very scratch resistant and fells like the glass iphone screen
did the screen protector go on easy or do you have the bubbling problem?, this is the main reason i dont bother with screen protectors.

Don't know where you saw that. In the video you can clearly see that there is NOT that prototype print, but instead the little one on the bottom of the battery cover (probably saying "with HTC Sense"). Look at the video beginning when they take out the device, and at 2:43 when they take off the plastic cover from the back =)

...once again, it would decrease the brightness.
it wouldn't impact the finger contact too much. capacitive screens 'project' a field above the glass (which is why they are used in industrial apps where you can have a touchscreen monitor with inch thick glass on it)
and in some cases the screen protector can cut down on glare and help the screen's viewability in strong daylight

I also agree with Iso because wen guys you see HTC sell this kind of High end device in that kind of very simple box no HTC logo with this device with a huge demand and also no user manual,no software CD,ect.just think this is the first windows phone with capacitive screen,using HTC sense and 1 GHZ.
Just got the phone, and the screen is a finger print magnet, when fingers are a little moist, it's difficult to move around the screen, AND I was beginning to get hairline scratches-I panicked to the T-Mobile store and purchased (16 bucks) 2 screen protectors and boy what a difference. The protector has a bit of a matte finish, gives the screen a bit of a grainy look to it. But in no way affect the screen sensitivity. In fact, it makes it easier to glide accross the screen, no finger smudges, and best of all-no worries about scratching the screen!

I just carry mine in the leather pouch it came with.
You get used to removing it after a week..
I don't have a screen protector on mine, just the silicone case it came with. Been putting it in my pocket for 2 months now, no scratch, still mint condition.

I have a silicone case on it and no screen protector. I purchased the phone the first day it came out and the guy who was ringing me up told me that the screen is made to be scratch resistant. That's why mines never got scratched along with the guy above me. I still was like should I buy a screen protector to be safe? He said, when he orders his, he's not putting one on. SO I was like okay. lol and it's still all fine and well.
I've got a cheapo screen protector from HK (good ol' fleabay) as it cuts out reflections a lot.
Is it possible that there's a manufacturing defect in some of the glass over the screens?
I've seen many videos of people taking keys, scissors and other various sharp instruments to their screens and having them show no damage - yet my screen which has been babied since day 1 (literally, in the case except for when in use, never put in pocket with keys, screen protector installed within a couple weeks of purchase, never dropped) seems to have many surface scratches in it.
I realize it would be exceptionally difficult to prove that I haven't somehow abused the screen, but is there any chance that I have a shot of getting a new phone with a warranty claim?
I'd appreciate any advice, or similar issues people are seeing.

Yes, they only show if the screen is off and generally at an ideal angle. Is the thought that it's dust as opposed to scratches?
thats just the touch screen input and such if the lines run diagonally, and if you see dots those are also part of the touch screen. I thought that also when I held it up in the light the first time

Word... if you're seeing a cross-hatch pattern of lines, that's just the touchscreen.
Somehow i have managed to get a scratch of prob 8mm tall x 1mm wide x 1mm
deep. is the front protected by something or is that the screen?
its hasnt gone all the way through what ever it is. but i can tell its scratched due to
the light when moving the phone about.
Anyway to fix this ie a new front?

I doubt it. It's hardened glass. It must have been something heavy or very sharp. The only fix i know of is a new glass cover or may be a very good screen protector
My N1 got a bunch of hairline scratches from my the old ladies earring, I put a name brand name screen protector on it and they're not visible anymore. So that is an option for you if it really bothers you that much, my N1's scratches drove me nuts because they were right at the top.
I have a scratch on my screen too...It was bothering me at first, but quickly forgot about it.

I agree and would try a screen protector. I found a Fellowes generic protector was best at hiding a big scratch on an old iPAQ I have. The screen on that is quite different but I don't see why it wouldn't work on the HD2.

I, too, have a nice scratch in the screen. Can't remember what happened, or what would have caused it. When I realized it was there I immediately shopped for screen protectors, and used member reccomendations from XDA forums. I purchased a recommended protector based on those recommendations and some further research elsewhere online. My results? DO NOT purchase the HD2 product from Gadget Shieldz dot com. It will somehow magnify the resolution refresh and create a rainbow pattern on the nice, hi-rez screen. Aarrgh! Does someone have a better product suggestion??

The only thing is that the HD2 protector doesn't protect the bottom part below the buttons. Wasn't an issue for me but if you want all over protection go with BestSkinsEver.

anyone tried the ZAGG Invisible Shield? It looks nice on the ads but i'd like to listen from a owner...
I have used the Zagg shield for about 3 months then happily removed it from my HD2, After a while the protector started to get an 'orange peel' effect to it and as a whole it was very reflective. I also didnt like the tactile feel to it, it felt quite rubbery and so when draging your finger across the screen sometimes it would feel choppy in a sense.
I am now using the wrapsol HD2 protector (am currently writing a full review for it so check back soon) but just quickly i love it and alreayd am more than happy with it i dont even know it is on the phone it feels like glass to the touch.
