Dirrty Hero needs cleaning - Hero, G2 Touch General

I'm going to sell my white Hero soon, as I have preordered a Desire.
Problem is, the white color on the front has a hint of discoloration.
How should I go about to get it white again? I thought about using cotton and acetone, but maybe it's too strong?
I have attached a pic to illustrate. You can see the darker color against the white "search & back" button.

Is the following of any use? From the htc hero spec page:
Keep your phone dry to reduce the chances of dirt adhering to the finish. If the back of your phone gets dirty, remove the back cover in accordance with the instructions in the user manual and use a lightly dampened melamine foam eraser (aka. magic eraser) to remove any marks. After thoroughly drying the back cover, replace it on the phone.

I tried with the melamine foam eraser, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to do much... I have exactly the same issue with discolored plastic on my white Hero - it only affects the front of the phone, and not the teflon covered back cover.
If you look at the top of the phone, the contrast between the discolored front and the (still) white back cover is very visible.
What to do next (except for buying a Desire or N1)? Acetone might be too strong, but I'm just speculating on that. Maybe vinegar or a combination of vinegar and baking soda could do the trick?

I haven't tried yet. All I found in the house was my wife's nail polish remover, and that did nothing....but it smells nicer now

Why did you 'shop a stock image of a phone rather than just take a picture of your actual phone. Surely this would have been easier

Ive used one of these fabrics you use for clean your glasses. It removed all marks.

Change the full back and front cover? It really is easy.

One of them is a white hero and ones a grey one

Any idea where I might get a front cover? I did a quick search for it on ebay when I bought a new back cover, but couldn't find any
EDIT
I found whole housings on ebay, they go for £30-35
But one month delivery time from Hong Kong is a long time to wait...

Just to finish this, I never managed to get the white color back. I have used fairly strong stuff, but nothing happens. Kudos to HTC for using a strong plastic material though! I think many other phones would get disfigured if I gave them the same treatment.
So, I'll just try to sell it as is, when I get the Desire in a few days.

X1 Battery Cover - Material?

Afternoon guys n girls,
Just a quick question, can someone confirm the X1 battery cover is aluminium and not titanium etc.
Mine is scratched to hell and I wouldn't mind getting it re-anodised purple or blue providing it is alu.
Thanks
try using the wonders of physics!
go get a magnet and test it
Have tired that already, it's not magnetic so that rules out steel... just wasn't sure if titanium is magnetic or not.
google power ("titanium magnetic")
Doesn't really help though, some people said it is magnetic whilst others said it isn't... there is not a clearly defined answer.
I'd rather not try re-anodise it and get it burnt to **** and THEN find out it isn't alu.
it's definitively not titanium..... the fu.... chassis is build in cheapest plastic but the accu cover is build with titanium......häh
im pretty sure its alu. the whole phone is made of it, why spend more money ona titanium battery cover?
I don't know, I just recall Nokia using Titanium on some of the phones like the...8800?
Ah well, anodising here we come.
good luck
whatever this actualy does hehe but screens are appriciated
Well it's taken a battering so re-anodising it will put all the colour back, get rid of the horrible grey patches.

I was thinking the same. Silver ftw. But on the pics it seems pretty bad handled even for a black X1.
just the battery cover. the rest seems fine.
but i must admit ... the batter cover get scratchy so freckin easy. i just wear it in my pocket or sometimes laying it on my desk. yet i got scratches on it.
i think my silver x1a is made of stainless. i had a hard time drilling thru doing the battery cover reset mod. i was using small new drill bit to drill a pilot hole and it wasnt easy. took me about 5 to 10 minutes to drill thru.
it's aluminum... otherwise, they would have bragged about using titanium in their phones..
besides, the nokia 8800 carbon is made of carbon fiber and titanium and retails for around 1000-1200 bucks.

I don't know what drills you use, but with a common HSS drill it should not take longer than 20 seconds to drill through and make a fine champfer -carbide should do the trick in half of the time.

The rest of the phone is 100% fine, it's just that I always put it down on my desk / table and tend to slide it rather than picking it up and moving it so the back has taken a hammering.
Just spoken to my mate who does anodising and he said he'll beadblast it first then re-anodise it for me... mmmmm blue or purple, that is the question now.

I'd prefer purple with a black phone.
Blue would be better for the silver one.
yeah thats what i thought untill i started drilling.
alluminun for sure its not. i thought so too and was thinking i would make quick work out of drilling but it didnt work out that way.

I must confess to total amazement here - normally, I'm extremely good-mannered ... but:
IRON (Fe) is magnetic, together with it's 3+ oxides (Fe3O4 etc)
TITANIUM is a completely different element
I just can't believe it ...

Possible to paint the battery cover like the touch pro?

Is it possible to paint the battery cover using the method described here:

I want to change the battery cover from the gold, on my white G1, to white.

Pretty sweet if ya ask me, I think Ill be doing the orange/yellow this sunday. My back case is messed up anyways so Ill scrub it down and give it a shot.
that picture is the reason I wanted to try it. Let me know how it goes when you do it. I would do it to my G1, but I'm trying to sell this one in order to get a new one
any updates?
Seriously I want to see what the g1 looks like painted. Back in my Nextel hacking days, I use to paint my devices, I always did a pearl with a few clear coats. I have never tried a "flat" color, it looks good though. Someone paint your phone.
Taping off the cam window woulnd't be too hard, but i'd want to keep the "with google" and keeping the speaker holes open would be a pain.. Maybe stick 9 toothpicks through from the inside?... Someone try it damnit. Haha
According to the thread at ppcgeeks, they didn't even need to take off the camera window.
ill be doing this today most likely...if not, tomorrow for sure . ..

I don't think you can paint the front casing, since it's not as rough/grippy as the back cover.

....If you read the thread, the person didn't do anything to the camera window. They neither taped it off, nor took it off. Since it's really smooth, the dye has nothing to stick on.

True. I want to do this but i think it would look kind of weird to have a two tone like that..
I wanted to paint my battery cover white, but I'm not sure if walmart has white dye.
im still trying to find the white back i have...got a blue dye.....
i dont think you can do dye black backs...its already the darkest color possible..unless im wrong..but thats why i realized i cant use the black back i have now.
Oooops didn't read it, assumed it was paint. I apologize.
No updates?
Anybody attempt this? Or going to soon?

It has only recently started peeling but have had it since November.
The cover can be replaced but it is not that cheap from what I can find.
Same here, mine is half peeled now.. like paint flakes.. =/

No peeling on my 6mo old T9193. No pouch or any cover, either.
No problems with my battery cover. I did order a new one though, because I want to try to drill a small hole and slot in it to be able to soft reset my HD2 when necessary and take out the SD card without having to remove the battery cover

holy crap! that is hideous! good thing is that after it all wears down, you still have a brushed metal surface underneath.... now unless that begins to shed after the next few months....
here's mine. pictured with phone itself under terrible light.. but you can see..
damn how can i get one of these in Slovenia we don't have our ebay and shipment from US or UK costs more than actual price of cover :S
i'm even thinking of doing the chrome look on it but with real chrome, i know some people who can do that. But i'm not shure about aluminium..
any suggestions?
Christ!!!!
That's looks like someone rubbed their behind with it, then rubbed it in sand, dropped it in acid and is now well on it's way to be driven over by a truck!
Damn Son... that is bad. You really shoud give HTC a piece of your mind. That obviously looks like it might have been defective, unless you really took it to town.

These are quite expensive. I'm sure you can find much cheaper alternatives on eBay. Better yet, take it down to a car garage that does repainting. I'm sure they'll be willing to give you a show quality finish.
While I am installing IPG to my phone, side of my battery is peeling off Because I think the guard did not stick very well and I tear wear too many times.
You could always try and have a silver finish to your cover like ive done
I followed this tutorial:

Scraped some paint on the Evo ;)

I don't recommend doing this if you value your manufacturers warranty!
I also do not take credit for the idea, as I saw it on a post on another android forum (linked from the white evo with black battery cover thread in the evo accessory forum).
Either way, just wanted to post some decent quality pics of how well this can turn out. I actually took the pics with my dads evo

What I did was take the battery cover off, and mask over the holes of the phone (don't want any scraps getting into anything, this is a messy project).
Then take a sharp razor blade, and start scraping away at the paint. Don't try to cut into it, rather pull the blade along the edge of the phone.
Start at the bottom so you can get the hang of it (and its less noticeable if you mess up).
I took my time on this, took about 30-45 minutes but I got all the edges and corners perfect.
Be careful around the headphone jack, this was the hardest part for me.
Wow! Looks great

So this with a red back would make a limited edition red evo

Yep all the plastics on the phone are red. Just carefully drag a razor blade along the edges to get the paint off. Like I said, don't try to cut into it, it'll look like crap.
Wow, yes that looks awesome. Makes you wonder why they dont make a completely red evo if the plastic is already red.

It was originally supposed to be, but verizon had claims on the red theme with their incredible, then changed the incredible at the last minute and the evo was stuck with the black facelift. Or something along those lines, don't know the exact story but I had asked about it at my sprint training and thats what I was told

Ballsy man, a lot of phones have the screens glued. It's a stronger construction method and allows for the phone to be thinner.

Its a double sided sticker holding the lcd to the front housing. I've replaced mine and had to reuse it. It went ok but I stretched it and the glue weakened.
Also the soft keys are glued to the lcd so remember to unplug that ribbon.
