htc legend already shipping - Hero CDMA General

so it seems some people are getting these phones early now if im correct this phone runs android 2.1 with sense. maybe someone who gets one of these can get us a dump for the devs.

I've had the whole ruu for a few weeks and ported it to work. It's basically the same as the 2 2.1 roms everyone is building from now. Other then fm radio that we already know won't work on our devices. The legend builds are also older builds then the Eris build I ported. The heroc build fresh released with the .29 kernel is actually newer then the Eris build by one day. And the most current build of 2.1 I've found. The only reasons I haven't released the legend build. Is for one we have newer builds and two it has issues with our speaker and Mic. The build is exactly the same as flipz heroc build. So were not gonna gain much from building off of if. It's also a gsm build that will need a lot of fixing to be as functional as the current newer builds. In my opinion its not worth the time to port something older then the current builds.

that was in the build also. lol ok fine ill fix audio and make a build it wont be tonight though. i gotta have some time. been working on this aosp multitouch issue. i dont use aosp but i want to know those who do dont have to suffer without a camera

let me ask you this, why put all the effort into this 2.1 port when the official update will be coming soon and then you will have to make another rom but fully functional already.
no offense, just seems like it's kinda pointless when we have the update coming this month.

if i wanted aosp i would of gotten anything besides a hero but the interface seemed so much nicer with sense it really was the whole decision for me with sense on this phone.

to me the biggest reason for continuing all these 2.1 roms. when the official comes out whenever its suppose to to me is that once the official actually does come out its alot easier to work with since the dev's are familiar with it

well just because we have a sprint 2.1 build doesnt mean we will get what all other buildsa have. we may not get friendstream and if thats the case then we will need new frameworks to support it. once sprint releases 2.1 doesnt make it the end of the road for porting other builds. one build may have some new function built into it. take espresso for example... its ui was totally different then any other. then we move on to other builds. some dont include certain htc apps. its almost like htc has a catalog with a gang load of options. the carrier or buyer may not wanna pay for a colorful ui they may only want it gray scale like eris is. or they may want all the colored icons like flipz's build and legend. every build is different. beleive this as soon as sprint gives us a 2.1 build. it will be extreamly simple to make an update.zip of it. no porting required at all. at this point i only want sprint to release because then that means we will get kernel source for .29. at that point if we already havent ported it ourselves(like last time) we can move on to bigger better things. but... as ive already seen were gonna need source for some of these new builds. our device is old and needs more space. so were gonna need to compile modules to squash the system down to a usable size and use other modules like ramswap and such to make up for or lack of hardware. were being outdated fast. android is finally developing into something to kick the other os's asses.
ps i do stuff to help everyone. whether i use their builds or not.

I am wondering about something concerning the new trackpad replacing the trackball in these new devices. How is this haedware switch going to affect recovery (if at all)? I mean will just "tapping" the trackpad work just as pushing the track button. Just something to think about.

well when u boot into recovery. it loads ur kernel and all of its drivers. im sure that it can be made aware of a trckpad if its not already.

I love the build of the device but after the hero I don't think ill settle for a inferior processor again especially after reading the reviews.

some people prefer aosp to sense. when i first bought the phone i liked sense but honestly after a few months i found that sense isnt worth the space its code takes up.

Which 2.XX Rom is the best so far? What are you using?

im currently running AOSP 1.6 rom with gbhil custom kernal with setcpu, I really wanna switch to a newer ROM im reading alot about.
1. flipz n toast 2.1 v1.8-7
2. darchstar Cyanogen (like) 2.0.1
3. darchstar AOSP 2.1
which seems to be the best ROM with the most features and close to everything working correctly?
What is everyone using?

Still using fresh 1.1 Rom, going to try darchstar's AOSP 2.1 today. I will post when finished and let you know how it goes.
i won't use any 2.1 rom until the official comes out.
Now that multi touch and open gl is out thanks to toast, the sense 2.1 build has everything but the camara , mms receive at least for me it isnt working, and vvm
But I like the cyogen like 2.0.1 build a lot
I'm having problems in all of 'em. I like the live wallpapers, market, and maps of the AOSP 2.1, but there are quite a few bugs of things working then not working, then crashing, then working a little.
The Sense 2.1 is kinda nice, but no paid apps in the market and no live wallpapers.
I like the browser in AOSP more than the sense browser.
I haven't tried the 2.0 yet.
I don't think any of 'em are ready for prime-time. They're need, but all have critical issues.
official 2.1 is coming out soon, so I don't see much motivation to go for a custom 2.1 ROM.
Using darchstar's 2.1 right now and it is really fast!! The camera not to big of a deal(not working), But other than that should really give it a test try!!

I agree with others, despite the massive amounts of work going into getting the kernels and roms working correctly, I will wait untill the official 2.1 as well...
wow either no one else here is trying Darchstar's 2.1 or 2.01 or im just lucky. I think his 2.1 is the best rom out, and I am including all the 1.5 and 1.6 roms in argument. Its my everyday rom, and I am a HEAVY user.
No camera = deal breaker for some.
no mms.. deal breaker.. But I use Sprint PIcture messaging website to get the missing pictures.. lol... and so I still use Darch's 2.1
the main purpose of the eclair i dev for is actually hopes of getting all hardware working in eclair with a .27 kernel. with that being said once sprint releases a 2.1 build for us we will be able to use a custom kernel in it. allowing for mods that extend beyond the build itself. the gsm hero devs know about this advantage as the .29 kernel they have runs slower then their .27 kernel in the builds. ive actually been passing my work on to lox as we fix things. trying to get them closer to a fully working 2.x build with .27 kernel under the hood also. all the 2.x builds will be buggy until we get atleast one official one to nab apps from and such. im thinking of the future right now. when sprint releases a rom and everyones pissed about source again. plus what we learn now will help us all later. i cant say one build is better then another. i guess its if u like sinse or aosp. or want this but not that. to me im just glad we are as far as we are. think about this... the dream guys dont even have opengl (as dream devs have come already looking to use our work) in their 2.x builds and the camera is half baked. also multitouch is a app hack. we have all but camera supported in a little .27 kernel and weve only had source for a few months. most said we wouldntve gotten this far in such little time. but we proved them all wrong.
I have been happy with every rom that I've found on this forum.
Gumbo 1.5c was the first I tried, and it was great. Some minor lag issues, but everything worked.
Now using toast + flips 2.1, and it's amazing. I miss my camera, but I'm not going to complain about it, because having multi touch and the consistency of how the phone runs is whats doing it for me. Thank god, I don't have to wait until Sprint releases one!
No offense to toast or anyone working on the 2.1 Sense ROM, but I tried it, and for me, it just didn't feel right. It was somehwat fast, but it did have moments of lag. Also, I didn't like all of the HTC stuff that came with it. I flashed darchstar's 2.1 AOSP, and WOW. It hit the spot. It's snappy because of the AOSP, and it has nothing "junky" in it. All I've done is flashed the HTC keyboard to it, and now it's wonderful Snappy, 2.1, AOSP, it's great. I don't really care about the live wallpapers, althought the Duck Hunt one was pretty nice.

Can we access picture mail from our phone browser and how do you know when you get a new message?
I'd like to throw it out there that after removing HtcCopyright.apk from darchstar's 2.1 AOSP, I've gotten rid of a lot, if not all, lag from the ROM. The speed also got ridiculously faster.

so whats next for our hero's?

are we waiting on the official 2.1 to be released to get more fully functioning roms?
do you guys see more apps and themes being made for our cdma heros in the near future?
id love one day to see as many options on the cdma versions as they have for gsm.
any thoughts or input on this guys? what would you like to see?
maybe even the possibility of porting webos or maybe even winmo to our phones? i don't see why not as winmo can port android. it's not on the top of my list but it would be cool to play with.
Dude. You start a lot of threads man lol. But yeah, Android 1.5 was made for GSM, and HTC had to do some crazy wackjob stuff to make it work for CDMA. Android 1.6 started including CDMA support, and Android will continue to support CDMA from 1.6 on out. So basically, once 2.1 comes out officially, I believe we will be in business. You should just chill out a little bit about the whole being bored and what's gonna happen stuff, and just enjoy your device. The HERO is a great phone, and it's only gonna get better!

yeah but i like to discuss, hence why we are on a forum.
Haha.. Yeah think it would be kinda cool to have WinMo on our phones, too; although I doubt I would use it for more than a day or two. Our Devs are seriously working hard getting the DEV-ROMs working and they're doing a ****ing great job. I can't wait to see what comes after the official update!!!
So... this might be a stupid question, but exactly what are we looking to see in the 2.1? I don't have any problems with my phone now, a little laggy and short battery life but I plan to get a new battery on payday. So, what is so great that people are actually talking about unrooting to go to the Official 2.1? I wouldn't unroot for anything they could possibly put in there. What if I'm at a friends and need internet and he doesn't have any? I gotta be able to tether. i can always use PDAnet, but its just not the same. And no longer being able to control the CPU, etc. And I love flashing all the new roms that come out and experimenting with the awesome stuff the Devs crank out, so really what is gonna be so awesome about 2.1?

Because when Sprint releases 2.1, then our devs will be able to take all the amazing-ness from 2.1 and combine it with the amazing-ness of having root access! Until then, we're just using hacks and leaks to get what we can get.

And we'll have the actual kernel instead of stuff with backported drivers.
well to me 2.1 was the holy grail until today.
The Dream rom has Flash 10.1, so its my new holy grail.
Oh, I agree totally that it will be awesome when the devs get their hands on all the 2.1 stuff, but what about the people talking about unrooting for the official upgrade? I guess what I'm really asking is...what amazing-ness? What are we waiting for? Will the phone make us breakfast in the morning and grab beer for us once we get 2.1? I'm in here every day like the rest, checking for updates on 2.1 status and waiting impatiently for the release, but again I ask..what am I waiting for? More speed? Less bloatware? Bug fixes? I'm just curious, I know that going from 1.29 to 1.56 fixed the massive lag when going from portrait to landscape and the original MMS issue, etc. But I really didn't notcie a diff in my phone after the upgrade. Seriously, what are we looking for in this new update?

Official .29 kernel or not. I bet once camera is backported most devs will use the modded .27 kernel to optimise their builds until .29 source is released. The main things we will get from the official release is the frameworks, a few and apks to allow for all of Sprints stuff to work. And I've almost managed that already but yeah other advantages of 2.1 are vwp, better frameworks, better opengl, better apps, UIs, and a better os all together. I know ill make sure the build is ready for all the root users on day one. If its not already leaked by then.
let's hope for a HERO200 leak then!
come on single unruly mischevious HTC employee....if you do this, then we promise we won't bother you like we did to get the source code..

Best way to get Hero on G1?

Hi, I'll soon be receiving my new G1, cant wait, but wondering what the best way to get Hero on it is. By that I mean, and from a purely objective point of view, which is one of the fastest/stable and fully operational Hero ports available? Alternatively, would it be better to get an older version of Android and theme it like Hero (the launcher). That way in theory it would be a fast stable system that looks like hero. What differences would there be if that was the case (in terms of functionality/features of the operating system etc) between these options?
Many thanks!
Well, I'm assuming you just want Sense as that's what Hero basically is. There are many Sense ROMs for the G1. You'll have to pick which one you like the best. All the reviews in the world can't account for your personal opinion. However, be aware that none have working bluetooth.

If I was you, which I was at one point, I would forget the sense roms since they are nice at first but eventually get really slow. Instead go with an eclair rom such as CaNNoN202 Complete Eclair this is what I have been using for the last month and it is still very snappy too date.

thank you! What are the main differences between 1.5 and 2.1 roms?
1.5 was the second version of Android called Cupcake then came Donut 1.6 which is the current version. 2.1 is somewhat new but 2.2 is the most current only available on certain phones such as the Nexus One. 2.1 has certain features not available on 1.6. If you are new to this you should read as much as you can because you can really damage your phone if you take a wrong step.
Once you get rooted next would be to install a custom rom. Donut roms are the most stable but some of these Eclair roms are very close. Check out theunlockr.com for a video tutorial on how to root and install a rom.

Bada's pointing you in a good direction. Just wanted to point out that any "hero theme" you get won't have all the Sense things that most Hero people like. Also, the launcher will just look Hero-ish. It won't have its functionality.

Thats great thanks for your help! I first purchased a G1 which was stuck on the G1 boot screen which i believed I could fix. Id never owned this phone before and so did alot of reading up while waiting for it to arrive to determine the reason it was bricked and a possible solution. As it happens it was a true brick, no access to bootloader, safe mode, recovery or fastboot. I thought i I could force commands to be sent using SDK via Windows but it would never be detected. The one good thing that came out of it, is I have a good knowledge of what to do and what not to do when rooting and upgrading so when my fully functioning one comes I will take all steps to avoid the same fate as the owner of the bricked phone!

Again, thanks for your input! I think my options so far would be to try out a few sense roms, some claim to be quite fast and a few reviews on youtube look promising. Really like the look of it, will have to give them a go to see if i like the feel of them!
Avoid DangerSPL. lbcoder, with the help from a few others I believe, have found way to 100% guarantee you DON'T brick, but you have to follow the instructions. I'm sure no other phone needs this, so I'm just -assuming- you're not fully read up on it. Please, this is the NUMBER ONE way bricks occur and is completely avoidable. You CAN recover a bricked phone through JTAG but it is difficult and offers new ways of completely destroying the phone from ANY future use.

New ROMS based on what??? We have HTC Sense ROMs for Eclair 2.1 and Froyo 2.2 and AOSP CM 6.1. What else are you looking?
Personally I hate visiting the other device forums because everybody and their brother has 'cooked' up another ROM (mostly just new themes or added favorite apps). IMO who has time to stiff through all the various ROMs and threads? I find it much easier to review 3 different ROM threads and try to help others than to try and go through 10 or 15 threads and seeing messages such as 'well this worked on this ROM but it doesn't on that ROM, why not?'
OK, I'll get off my soap box now...
I agree. Plenty of good variety in the ROMs we have.

There's nothing wrong with that actually. Sometimes it's a good thing because there are more people developing towards something greater. We have 1 or 2 guys doing all this work. There are some pretty badass ROMs for the more popular phones out there. If we had more people developing and cooking, we'd no doubt have something better than what we have even now.
Screw those giant phones.
But a little more ROMS would be cool, we just need more people with the Aria.
It's not a bad phone...hah.

Not too sure, as I have only had the Aria and used the two ROMS.
it's not a bad thing that we may only have 3 roms, but they are actually good quality roms, not just thrown together, and they are constantly being updated, but it would be kool if they had more help with them. Although i wish they had some people creating or porting themes, if i knew how i would, if anybody wanna help me learn, i wouldn't mind contributing by making themes for the aria, cause i kno i'm not the only one wishing they could have a theme to try out

+1 on themes
I recently rooted and installed CM6.1.0RC2, and only thing I'd say it's missing is Flash Lite compared to Sense. Wish there was a way to get Flash Lite on CM, sadly not possible. Still loving CM though. Might test Sense again when there's an official Froyo update from AT&T and attn1 has taken out all the bloatware.

Hopefully it's before Christmas.

Wait... why wait for the official ATT rom? It's going to be near identically the same as the Gratia ROM with 2.2 in it. You can go download it and flash it now.

Agreed. Waiting for the AT&T ROM to be released and then having someone remove the bloatware is pointless. What you will end up with is available now as Liberated FR07...
Sorry didn't mean the rom, meant the source kernel for attn1 to add and hopefully figure out why track wake isn't on plus all the other little things that's on his list that aren't in the current build.

Um trackball wake works. So does wifi tethering and overclocking. We also have flash working.
Check this post.

From what I understand it's using the froyo kernel from the legend now.

That's right folks- get your supercharged Froyo sense goodness now with the newer kernel source released by HTC for the HTC legend. Everything works as far as I know, except for the built in wifi hotspot app for which we have replaced with the working Wireless Tether app thanks to the work of shakerhero. Final thanks go to attn1 and jznomoney for their hard work on the CM kernel, ladios for bundling up the kernel, trackpad wake fix, and wireless tether in a single, proper package.

Just gotta flash it yourself. Been running it for a couple of days. Prior to that was using the CM6.1 kernel for OC and trackball wake.
kura808 looks like i've been missing some good reading
thanks for the links too.

So guess what, we aren't gonna get AOSP Gingerbread(says the 2.3 AOSP guy)

So the guy who's dumping the AOSP from the Nexus S said "There is no AOSP support any longer for ADP1 ("dream") and ADP2 ("sapphire")." You can read it yourself here http://groups.google.com/group/android-building/browse_thread/thread/298a46f6eaab8c39 I don't know if it's true so please tell me if it's not and please don't flame me if it's not. I guess I'm gonna get a G2 now. What do yall think?
Never say never lol, Someone will find a way
Heard the same awhile ago with Eclair and Froyo.

RAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEE
Just kidding
The Dream can barely handle FroYo, I don't know how well it would handle Gingerbread.
Does anyone actually have their G1 running quickly on a FroYo ROM? CM is pretty damn slow.

yes, CM itself can be set up right for once, then are the OTA roms who are with less things...so they run quite good and ofc the AOSP froyo roms.
What setup is needed for CM to be fast? I don't need any features, just speed. If there's a better FroYo ROM for that I'm open to switching.
Gingerbread on the Dream will happen...I have no doubt about that. The question is how well it'll run. If only the Dream had a little more RAM...
Come on man when have we "never" been able to get an update? Im gonna take a wild stab in the dark and say we will still be getting roms for at least another 2 years!

I don't know about that, because I'm pretty sure Honeycomb or whatever they decide to call Android 3.0 has a minimum requirement for 1GHz processor so the Hero, Sapphire and Dream might be out of luck, especially the Hero because they're still stuck with the 2.6.29 kernel. 3.0 might be possible but I doubt 2 yrs of new Android ROMs is plausible.
AOSP gingerbread running on my Dream..
So seems mostly a go.. will require some poking for a true release but not that bad.
If it's not officially supported in AOSP, does that mean we'll be without camera drivers?

check out the 2708 radio+kernels. By switching to the new radios released for the mytouch + kernel with support, you gain back an extra chunk of ram for os use. Definitely helps out froyo builds

camera (with the minimal poking to get it to compile) is working
No release because many bits of this are easy to fix
> wifi works
> camera works
> hw3d I think is working .. but lanuncher/3d gallery/keyboard are running a bit slow .. and we know the port to 2.2 of launcher/keyboard run fine
> bluetooth no-go but that is just because I'm using a sapphire firmware (easy to swap)
> gsensor no go.. I think this will be a relatively easy thing to correct. API change confused it.
Taking a break from testing while I make a repo to work from

Honeycomb (Android 3.0 or 2.4....who knows) will not require a 1Ghz CPU.
Still don't understand why you people want gingerbread so much. The time it takes to get something that was never intended to even be ran on the G1 was at least a year or so and that was only with eclair and froyo. We can't run a lot of things because of the lack of ram like jit. Everything lacks now, even the gpu.
Please stop with all this silly nonsense about Gingerbread threads and just be patient. I have little faith in the project, as most original devs have completely moved onto different devices which are easier. Not saying the new devs are bad, I'm just saying we lost a lot of veteran support on the G1.
Why not just use something fast on your G1 that won't fry it's sockets after 5 hours of use?

People just want to have the newest, and humans like pushing limits (in this case of the G1).

Not only that, look at ezterry's mt3g port of froyo. 2708 radio/kernel + mt3g = hot fastness. Loaded it on two G1s, the gf loves how much faster it is than the other froyo roms we've tried. Probably has to do with the fact ezterry's port is nearly completely stock (it is without the parts update).

Anyway I think 2.3 will be too much for the G1/MT3G to handle, it already struggles with 2.2 so 2.3 is over doing it. Battery will not be very good, as most phones with 2.2 now have 512+ ram as the standard. To get the best experience you'll need faster hw to support the effects,apps,etc...2.1 is the furthest i would go w/ a g1, but 1.6 is where the best perf is. I would go with a new phone if you wanna enjoy 2.3.
p.s. not trying to discourage anyone, just stating facts
