Eris 2.1 Leak "Time Bomb"? - Droid Eris Android Development

So has anyone heard or can confirm any more of this rumor about there being a "Time bomb" in the leaked version of 2.1?? Or is this just someone's doomsday prediction?
Your thoughts?

My thoughts? You can't downgrade. Surely there could be a time bomb in place. I don't think there is a time bomb, but maybe HTC will make the official 2.1 one version lower so the bootloader doesn't pass the main version check. That's just why I stayed on 1.5.

Software Upgrade for ERIS wil be 2.0
03-07-2010 01:01 PM
I just talked with HTC today and they confirmed that the new upgrade for the ERIS will be the 2.0..... Not the 2.1 as has been hoped for. It will be offered any day now and can be downloaded off the HTC site or over the air.

Ok, I may have opened my mouth just long enough to change feet. I just got off the phone with HTC, and the young lady on the other end ASSURED ME that the Eris release of Android 2.0 would definitely be out by the end of this month. She also said it would subsequently be replaced by 2.1, but couldn't give a timeframe for when that would happen. So, in case you thought the wait was over...think again. Go figure. That 2.1 patch is looking better all the time.
This was posted on the verizon forums, the way it's going we may never get to 2.1, even though they say we will. Ohhh decisions decisions. LOL

If this is true there are going to be some very unhappy people on here that wont be able to wait until eris gets rooted.

Don't worry about a bug or virus if you D/Led the first couple of versions of the leaked 2.1 as for any other versions I can't confirm but you can run a MD5 check and there is a result in the 2.1 leak thread that it should match. For the last time we are not getting 2.0. (Well probably not the last but a guy can hope)

It's been WELL confirmed that all android devices are moving to 2.1, not 2.0.

Not saying I agree or even believe the posts, just thought it was interesting. It's not saying we won't get 2.1 at all, just delayed. Who knows

Yeah, I have to side with tdavis on this. Think about it: we currently have a release-key-signed, Verizon-branded 2.1 firmware that looks to be pretty close to completion. (Maybe not three-weeks-close, but pretty close!) At this stage, there are very few options that make any business sense involving 2.0. It would mean that the team spent valuable resources bringing the Eris up to an older firmware version, making the Eris the only device in HTC's lineup using 2.0. On top of that, we know that Sense-enabled builds of 2.1 exist on the Bravo, meaning that component of the software is 2.1-ready as well. Barring some kind of internal mismanagement or malfunction at HTC, we will be getting an official 2.1 build.

Apple lawsuit
Does anyone think the lawsuit against HTC will delay the official release of 2.1 or even the Nexus One to Verizon? If it goes to court, Apple could force them to hold the release until the software is "patched".

Most of your Customer Service/Tech Support agents in call centers would not know the difference between 2.0 and 2.1. The build numbers dont matter to most people, 2.0, 2.1... there isn't much perks that I can see right now from having 2.1 over 2.0 anyway...

Only if the injunction to stop distribution is successful (10% likelihood?), and even then, we won't see that for months if not years. I don't think it will have much bearing on the N1's march to Verizon.

Unfortunately I can confirm that this is in fact true. I was speaking with one of Verizon Wireless' main testers this past week and said person let it slip that the Eris update will indeed be Android 2.0. Unfortunately I can't give any more details as that friend of mine shut up very quickly after they let that one slip, although I can confirm the 2.0 update will be coming sometime within the month, or as they put it "The update is an extremely high priority that it be released in the very near future."
I got some droid confirmations with that statement, so I know that person isnt bullshitting anything, but at this time that's all I've got.

Technically 2.1 is 2.0 right?.. to the untrained eye.
Most people think of it as 2.1 is just an update to 2.0 when really it is more of its own thing than it is an extension of 2.0. So, I could see SOME KIND of confusion being made that it doesn't really matter to someone saying you're getting 2.0, 2.0.1, or 2.1.
I believe it would be much easier if they went the route of naming them against their API level in the SDK to avoid confusion.
In which case 2.1 would be Android 7 and everyone can go "oooh! Should I have Android 7 with my Windows 7 laptop and my 7 Mbps connection with 7 iced coffees in my BMW 7 Series!?!?!?"

They were 100% clear that the build would NOT be 2.1. My guess is that its a modified 2.0.1 build running sense (Which I certainly wouldnt complain about, it'd be easier to port to my droid =P)
Verizon Wireless was having serious problems with Vanilla 2.1 running on the Droid, to the point where they are having trouble finalizing a build in lab because the main testing build has so many problems. All of the issues the Droid got rid of came back in 2.1, GPS/Wifi/Auto-focus/etc. This probably translated over to the build the Eris was using, which is why 2.1 will be an eventuality for you guys, but it seems 2.0/2.0.1 is the near future.

Hey maybe it will be 2.0 or 2.0.1. Maybe we will be able to use M7 or some other exploit that has been patched when we get it.
It may be a step back but it could end up being a step forward also.

Indeed. Just figured I'd give you guys the FYI. The faster you guys get a rooted eris, the faster I have Sense fully working on my droid! =P

It doesnt really matter at this point I have 2.1!

No no... we all have "2.1"

exactly!!!

Yeah, but what happens if 2.0.1 gets rooted quickly and 2.1 gets pushed to the side? Then you're stuck with a phone you cant return to verizon without telling them you've voided your warranty and no root access that the community enjoys.

So.. this would really get us close to a custom Hero 2.X ROM?? (beacuse of drivers and chipset compatiblitiy)... right??
great
well this is great news as i left a moto droid for the eris however i really liked 2.0. The only thing i am a little worried about though is that os 1.6 can now run googles maps with the turn by turn navigation.... I hope they dont screw us over by just giving us 1.6 and not 2.0 or 2.1.... i guess we will have to wait and see

I agree, after reading the article again the same thought crossed my mind
I understand the worry about 1.6 but in all honesty, that would be stupid. The Eris came out AFTER the Hero and they have a 2.1 Hero rom in development for release. I don't see HTC being so foolish as to release 1.6 for Eris.
So, I spoke to a tech and they said there will be two updates in the upcoming months. One is scheduled for the 11 of this month(same day for a Droid update) and one is for the 22nd of January. He cold not really see what was planned for the 22nd update but he said the update on the 11th will see a few bug fixes. The few mentioned were the clock and weather widget taking up more battery that suppose to, something relating to google sync, a browser related on and a settings related one. Not sure how really accurate this is, but it sounds positive.
Maybe others can call vzw tech support and ask around
You either got a one in a million smart tech guy or he is completely lying to you. I hope the first description applies not the last as I own an Eris myself. We could try calling tech and telling them that we are having problems in the areas listed above and see what they say to either confirm or deny this. Personally mine is fine, although any battery conservation is great, I could wait until 2.x to come to me. I just really want one of these updates to have a hole that we can find so we can get root.
well he said that is what the comp records said for the updates...
I think the Eris wont get 2.x anytime soon. Too me it looks like Verizon wants 2.0 exclusive to the Droid. See how they point out
Currently, our developers have to work with the carriers to determine when and if a ROM upgrade will be available for any of their branded models.

Well I spoke to another tech support person today and they said it looks like the update on 22nd of January may be 2.x update for the Eris. I hope he is right. HTC tech support also told me the Eris will get a few updates in a coming months.

HTC Announces that they are still working on OS update for Hero+Sprint News

HTC on Twitter:
Believe it or not, I STILL can't say anything more about Eclair coming to Hero. Working as fast as we can, promise!
2:18 PM Dec 8th from CoTweet
Sprint Admin via Sprint Community:
We can't acknowledge an upgrade until HTC confirms one - and they're still being coy:
http://twitter.com/htc/status/6476826589
The process is:
Google -->> HTC -->> Sprint -->> You. Google is done, now HTC has to write the SenseUI overlay and test the CDMA radio. Then Sprint has to certify the update and schedule it for release.
It hasn't even gotten to Sprint? I was hoping to have a release before Christmas.
Still, this is great! Even though it hasn't yet gotten to Sprint, something in the works means we WILL be getting an update.
Excellent!
Of course we will be getting the update. We are looking at something close to the Jan 11th release date of the Eris 2.0 update.
Regardless of what Sprint does once the Eris gets it we will get it shortly after. It will be all over these forums without any need for Sprint to pull its thumb from their ass.

The whole reason they have a newer version (ex. 2.1) is to fix bugs, right?
The 1.x Android and 2.x Android development lines are VERY different. I don't think skipping 1.6 makes any difference at all. If we were going from 1.5 to 2.0 < notice the 0 there, you'd have more to worry about.
1.x Android didn't have built in support for CDMA that both Sprint and Verizon use, so HTC had to add that code into 1.5 and if they were migrating to 1.6 they'd likely have to adapt the code a bit again.
2.x, since it has the CDMA built in HTC will have to verify that it works properly, tweak the code possibly. Their biggest challenge is going to be the SenseUI add on along with trying not to repeat the problems with SenseUI and other app issues that hit us with the 1.5 release.

Not sure about Android 2.0, possibly later on in June.

Work for Sprint as well. 1.6 isn't gonna happen and 2.1 has no ETA communicated to the stores yet. Won't be installing it until its root safe.
I'm losing my patience with this phone and the company.
I'll be returning mine unless they fix the issues before the date I can return it.
Part of me feels that this is all just a ploy to stop people from returning the phone and that once they have the sales in the bag they will drop support (which they may have already done, for all I know)

I think you may have this backwards. Only the kernel has been released from HTC and it is available: http://developer.htc.com/ they won't release anything else most likely. The especially won't release SenseUI since it's not GPL. AFAIK only the Linux kernel is GPL and the rest of Android is Apache licensed which means they don't have to release modifications.
Happy to announce Android 2.0 is coming to Sprint’s Hero & Moment. Date TBD, but roughly 1H 2010

When/If there will be an official 2.2 for the Aria

I've seen lots of information flying around on Engadget and the like about HTC 2.2 updates forthcoming, but I have yet to see anything at all about the Aria.
Does anyone have any idea if HTC / AT&T intend to update the Aria to 2.2? Of course I know if they don't, we have some guys working hard on unofficial versions. Just would like to know if we'll get anything official...
HTC has stated they're working on it, and they "hope to have it done by christmas" but I wouldn't hold my breath for it to get thru HTC and AT&T for the Aria by then. Last I can remember, the HTC Wildfire was listed as getting the update and the Aria is very similar to said device. I also recall hearing that HTC said all the devices released past a certain point this year (Aria falls within this range) will be getting 2.2. I'm sure the Aria will get it, but again, I wouldn't hold my breath, CM6 will most likely be in full functioning order before official Froyo
Will definitely be trying out CM6 as soon as it gets in a little more working order! Definitely not holding my breath on HTC + AT&T...especially not the AT&T part of that equation.
Nothing official about the Aria, but HTC Evo is getting some official 2.2 Froyo loving tomorrow.
Maybe with that, we can hope for an earlier release for the Aria.
I wont hold my breath, the Motorola Back flip have been out for how long and its still on the launch firmware. ATT will take their sweet time when HTC releases it to them, best chance is that someone here gets their hand on is and bakes a 2.2 with HTC Sense rom for Aria users to flash with.

Considering how the Backflip went, this isn't surprising. Why could a company back a device that isn't doing much on it's own already?
Might be coming sooner than some of you expect. HTC seems to be getting serious about froyo

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/htc-will-ship-all-android-phones-in-china-with-froyo-on-board-f/
Granted we'll have to deal with att.
I think we will see one, but it will be a pain to install. The phone, for whatever reason, cannot accepted over-the-air (OTA) updates... there's no option in the settings to see if there is an update like most other android phones. HTC has said you will need to use HTC sync to upgrade. (Though I'm sure many of the people here at xda will have no problem loading the ROM via Sync or other ways, for regular users this could be a pain.)
Thought I'd share. I found this bit of info on the htc support forums in the aria section.
Posted by HeavenLee on 22 Jul 2010 2:12 PM
Whne there is an update for the Aria-it will have to be loaded from a PC to your device. The good news is that after the first update for the Aria, Firmware Over The Air will be implemented so that any subsequent updates will arrive to your device over the Air once their are released. Currently, there are no updates for the Aria OS-they are in the works.
So it is quite possible we may be getting froyo because she said it's "in the works." One of the other HTC forum moderators said it may take a while because it will be "tested and approved" by att and that we'll need to update it via sync.
So from what I understand, she said after the first update, there will be more updates released OTA. Froyo is gonna be a sync update so when she says any subsequent updates will arrive, does that mean she's hinting we'll be getting updates past froyo? Maybe we'll be able to get 3.0 ;P I mean what other updates will there be? lol
I'd LOVE to get 3.0, but I'll be happy with 2.2.
There is a post at Unwired review (can't post link until my account is verified.. not sure if there is a way to 'request' to be verified), but it's from Unwired Review. Just google "Android 3 Gingerbread."
But then there was an update to the post:
Update: I posted an update to this post, where I address Dan Morrill’s tweet, and do some corrections/clarifications regarding the upcoming Android update number issues, “minimum” specs – thay are actually only “recommended”, and the the split between high end Android 3 – low end Android 2.2 devices – it’s not an official Google policy, but it is happening nonetheless.

So could we get it? Yes. And I think with the speed htc is pushing out the updates, it's not a question for them of "do we update the aria," it's the same question for many of their phones, since so many htc android phones are similiar inside and out.
Froyo for the Aria is something I have been looking forward to for a while now, and seeing it any later than October would be a huge letdown.

For galaxy s phones.
With the recent update I figured it would happen. No point releasing an update only to release an even bigger one in a weeks time.
Im surprised no one has ported the leaked 2.2 rom for the galaxy S phones.
Apparently the UK is getting it at the end of this month...so it's pretty much a crapshoot.

Gingerbread coming today? It's still pinging

The big ol' unsourced, unconfirmed, who-knows-if-it's-true rumor of the past week or so has been that Android 2.3 -- Gingerbread -- will be announced/released/something today. It's just about lunchtime, and no sign of anything sweet yet -- though as you can see from the Google analytics above, it looks like it's still pinging around out there.
Will we see it today? Dunno. Will we see it tomorrow? Dunno. Are our fingers crossed? Absofrigginlutely.

oh well for that!! lol.
wouldve been nice if they at least gave us a teaser screenshot or a bit of information to hold us over.. dang..
I don't know why people always get so down on HTC so far they have been great with pushing updates. If an update is coming I don't think it will take 3 to 4 months. Some thought Froyo was going to take a long time too and we got it on a few weeks. If your going to speculate how about speculating that the cup is half full.
From watching all of the handset manufacturers out there HTC is by far and away the fastest to provide updates to their phones.
Samsung still doesn't have 2.2 and Motorola isn't that fast either.
Is there anywhere there is a guarantee that the EVO will be getting the next update?
