HD2 adhoc wifi connection - NOT WLAN-Router! - HD2 General

Hi,
I've searched the forum but always found the wrong direction - how to use the mobile internet connection with a laptop. Answer of choice: "Use the WLAN-Router software on the HD2". That might work for others, but I need the opposite way.
I've got a Lenovo T500 with most recent WLAN drivers and the HD2 (OS 5.2.21869, Manila 2.5.19211619.0, ROM 1.66.407.1 (76641) GER) and I want to use the internet connection of my notebook (at work ;-)) with the phone.
So I thought I'd set up an adhoc wifi connection between those two.
But it doesn't work. Both devices see each other but none of them can connect. For the notebook I can set a static IP 192.168.1.xxx for the WLAN card, but how do I set this on the HD2. I've tried setting static IPs for all the network adapters listed under Settings -> Menu -> More -> Connections -> WLAN -> Advanced -> General -> network adapters -> network adapters ... (on my german OS: Einstellungen -> MenĂ¼ -> Mehr -> Verbindungen -> WAN -> Erweitert -> Netzwerkkarten -> Netzwerkkarten ...). But on the "Advanced" tab next to "General" I get "Status: Connected to network, MAX: ........, IP 0.0.0.0". When I tap the WiFi symbol in the top status bar, it says: "Wi-Fi: not connected ...".
I'm lost! Can anybody help please?

Hmmmm I would assume that the HD2 Wi Fi App emits an Ad-Hoc Wi Fi connection type....which is like a PC TO PC network connection right? Same happened to me, however in this case my PS3 didn't see my HD2 wifi network...so yes, it may not ever work..unless there's a hack someone develops

Thanks for the reply, but that's odd.
I have no problem connectiong to my WLAN router at home (infrastructure mode). DHCP works perfect on that.
But at work my only way would to ad-hoc connect to my notebook and use its LAN connection from there on.
It seems a bit dumb to offer an ad-hoc mode and then not support it properly - so I still hope for some more feedback.

So is the Connection to your laptop a wired connection?
If so you can either connect your phone to your laptop via a cable and WMDC, or if you want wireless you can right click on your wired connection and go to the properties, you should be able to share the connection with your wireless card. the PC will handle the DHCP and IP Allocation. but you need to create a Ad-hoc network for your wireless card.

all you need to do is turn the router on on the hd and connect to it e with windows, you need to set windows to be able to see adhoc networks though, should be in the advanced wifi settings.

No he's wanting to use the Laptops LAN connection if I'm reading it right instead of the phones data connection, ie Internet>Laptop>Phone if you turn on the wifi Router the internet connection will be coming from the phone not to the phone

On the PC right-click on your LAN connection, choose share, select the WLAN connection as the interface you want to share on. Create an ad-hoc network on the PC, then connect to it with the HD2.
Or use ActiveSync/WMDC via cable or bluetooth.

Aaaah Gotya, if that's the case, try Connectify on the laptop to create a WiFi hotspot, and let it deal with the DHCP'd client for you. Works fine for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!
I'll try them out and report back if any of it worked for me.

Sorry for digging out this thread but I have the same problem (I can connect to ad-hoc with my notebook but I don't have internet on HD2) and any solutions in web didn't help me. Sorry for bad english Please - any suggestions?

I was having problems with ad-hoc connection as well. The only thing that fixed it was to delete the settings for my other networks and then the ad-hoc started working. I don't know if this will help everyone, but it worked for me.

I can't delete settings of my other networks because I set static IP in connection with internet. Maybe I must try share internet via bluetooth. Where I can fin guide about it? (I've already tried to search on forum)

I can acces to internet via router connection, but not by ad-hoc. Someone had this kind of problem and solved it with some program or smth else?

check it out !
chech it out it might help u, but select "work" instead of "internet" and don't open network adapters...

exc.
oops... I can't paste link(because i'm new user), but search with google in the forum "how to access internet with laptop (vista) through wireless" and open the first link. I explained every thing there to set up adhoc connection with hd2...

internet access through ad hoc wifi connection?

hi, im not able to connect to the net with my wizard.
i dont have a wireless router so am connecting directly to my laptop, the ad hoc connection i have made works fine for file tranfers, but not for activesync or connecting to the web in either PIE or minimo.
i know activesync isnt possible but surely i should be able to use the broaband from my laptop?
any pointers would be greatly appreciated. software? settings?
its a t-mobile uk vario with qtek test rom.
also anyone know of a remote control utility, i use logmein but would like something a little more menu/macro based for control of media.
cheers
kevo
Try turning on Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on your laptop; that'll make your laptop act a bit more like a router, providing NAT services to the Wizard.
yeah i've tried that, and i've just tried bridging connections (dont really know much about that) but that hasnt worked either.
kevo
My configuration
Me too, I use ADHOC connection for my WLAN.
PC configuration:
ADSL connection shared
Adress IP:192.168.1.1 Mask:255.255.255.0
PocketPC configuration:
Adress IP:192.168.1.55 Mask:255.255.255.0 Gateway:192.168.1.1
DNS:80.10.246.2 for Wanadoo
Your problem is certainly the DNS.
You can put 192.168.1.1 too.
so it is possible? cool!.......but im still having problems.
i cant figure out how to enter these settings, not to sure where to put them,
iv tried puttin the DNS in the -> connections -> vpn
and -> network cards -> networks adapters -> SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter
sorry to be a pain, but could you point me to where to get each address and where to put them?
also is there anything particular you did to set up the adhoc network? i just used the Windows XP wizard and then ticket the AdHoc option after.
my laptop is conected to the router and the router is connected to aol adsl.
the ip address of my laptop is showing as a simple 10.0.0. number on the LAN but "Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.235.147" for the WLAN
none of my setup has a static ip address, could this be causing the problems?
thanks
kevo
It's more hazardous without static adress but it's can work.
My PC has directly access to the Internet with a ADSL modem.
It's here (network cards -> networks adapters -> SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter )
Apparently, it's ok for your PC and the Ad-Hoc mode.
Maybe, you should have your adress IP WLAN on the same network adress of your router.
I GOT IT WORKING!!!
I started again from scratch.
set a new WLAN. added new setup to the vario, added the DNS etc to the vario.
the problem i was having was the way i was sharing the internet connection, i was trying to shared the internet from the wireless to the lan rather than the internet from the lan to the wireless (if that makes sense to anyone!!!). i also ticked all the connection sharing services to allow them, just need to go through them and see which i dont need now.
thanks for the help guys
kevo
(its showing my transfer rate as 11Mbps, although i think iv done the G tweak and my laptop says its got a G card. what speeds should i be getting?)

Drop it. No way to do it. I've posted here just a few weeks ago, tried everything, with no luck. It simply isn't possible with the latest ActiveSync 4.1, and the older one 3.8 which has the wifi functionality, is not compatible with WM 5.0.
So forget about it. You can connect through wifi, but no synching...
Thank you very much but what is the benefith to connect through wifi?? i cant even send a file or connect to internet!!! At list give me a clue to conect Internet through WiFi & PC. but i think if we do the right Setting for IP in WiFi we would get connected some how....
Connecting through wifi gives you some good things... FOr one, I can stream all my mp3, and movie collection through wifi from PC to my prophet in real time... Yes, even movies work perfectly. So you don't have to keep your mem card full. And you can transfer files to/from PC with little problem.
To set it up, just set up a network on your pc, turn on wifi. Your prophet will discover it, and you can connect to it. Then you need a program like PocketLan, and you can set up a network folder in your prophet which lets you view all the folders you have placed on share on the PC. (so you have to place some folders on share).
I haven't tested sharing an internet connection, but it should not be a problem. I will test tomorrow or tuesday, and let you know.
Cheers.

Resco File Explorer will let you add "share drives" also. You can add directories or drives.
Upss...
It seems that sharing internet connection through wifi is NOT possible with WM5... They have just ruined everything with this stupid upgrade of activesync!
Anyone aware of a work arround so my PC internet connection works on my PPC connected to it with ad-hoc wifi?
as i said i think with IP configuration there might be a way to share it. or i think XDA fellow should program a Stack for this issue on activesyns4.x
Internet over Wi-Fi
you definitely need to do your research better
I have a wi-fi network at home and connect my Prophet to the internet without any problem, and so do thousands of other users.
If you have a wi-fi router, just set it to use the encryption supported by the Prophet. I found that using an authentication of "WPA-PSK" and encryption of TKIP works perfectly.
If you're setting up an ad-hoc network between a pc and the Prophet, you need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the PC with the internet connection and voila'
You do not need activesync over wifi to use internet on the Prophet, just use it as a normal pc on wi-fi network. However what they have not been able to do till now is enable Activesync over Wi-fi for synchronisation.
Perhaps you are right Acer, since I was not able to fully test it with your specs.
I have a company cable network LAN, and a wireless adapter on the laptop which is free. But unfortunatelly, I was not able to set up internet sharing of the LAN, since it goes over a Network Bridge. Anyone now how this could be enabled?
THanks for the info Acer, its helpful...

yes i am using XP home Edition and my laptop is Averatec 3200 series
Just go to properties on your dial up internet sharing and set share this connection. i thinks thats about it. i've not use it for a long time, but if I remember correctly that's about it. you have to share it with your WI-FI adapter of course.
Some WI-Fi card can configure this automacticly. Like several I seen. You can set it as a router, and you're good to go.
BUMP @ acer175 ..where are you dude??!!!
Hi lover. Sorry, I thought Munyuk81's response was enough.
Anyway, on Windows XP, open Network Connections, right-click on your dial-up/ADSL connection, selet Properties.
Open the Advanced tab, you should have an Internet Connection SHaring section. Enable "Allow other users to connect etc, etc...". Select the wireless network adapter if given the option. Click YES if asked to change the IP.
Next create a wi-fi network using the XP utlities or your card's utilities. Don't touch the IP address of the wi-fi card.
Next on your Prophet, enable Wi-Fi and it should discover the network by itself. If you set a key in the step above, it will ask you to enter it.
@acer175
Do you know how i can share my Lan internet which goes over a Network Bridge? WHen I removed the Lan from the Network Bridge, I could see the options for ICS, but there was no internet to share, as the connection was lost. Adding it back to the network bridge restores the internet connection, but removes the option for sharing it with the other (wifi) card...
Anyone?
i haven't tried it myself, but thinking logically, when you add a connection to a bridge, it loses its individual attributes. You have to check the properties of the bridge, and check if there are ICS options there, however I do not think that XP allows that, but you can try.
ALso see if this may be helpful:

PROBLEM: sharing folder with WiFi...

Hi guys!
I'm trying to use (first time 4 me!) WiFi connection from my laptop and my Jamin in this way:
Start from scratch (without connections...) and turn on both wifi.
Create a new connection for only 2 devices from my Jamin without any security (4 the moment).
Now I can see the new wifi network on my laptop...
I chose connect from my laptop and the connections estabilish.
Handshake to retrieve the ip address is oaky and now I've got the connection from my 2 devices (Jamin and laptop).
On laptop I can ping the ip address of my Jamin but now I don't know what can I do with this connection.
Is it possible to share some folder on laptop and/or on Jamin to copy/remove/move some files?
Is it possible to use the std modem connection of my laptop for browsing the web from Jamin?
Is it possible to sync with Activesync my Jamin?
How can I do it, guys?
You can do most of what you want:
First, make sure that if you selected (on the Jamin) that your network connects to 'Work' in Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Network Selection both lists read 'My work network' or 'My ISP' if you selected the 'connects to Internet'.
1) To browse, copy, move and delete files on you laptop just create standard windows shares. (right click folder or drive, select sharing)
To access the files from the Jamin select 'open path' in file explorer and type \\computer-name\\share-name. I recommend using the free Total Commander because built-in file explorer takes up to 3 times as long to transfer files (no idea why, it just hangs in the middle).
Unfortunately Windows Mobile does not support file sharing so this will not work viceversa (looking at Jamin files from laptop)
2) To serf the web through laptop internet connection you have to use 'internet connection sharing' (not a problem if you are using Win XP).
On the Jamin go to Settings->Connections->Network Card->Adapters
tap on your WiFi card in the list and enter your laptops IP as the gateway.
3) Sync is possible but tricky. I don't know the exact procedure but you need to set up a VPN (MS removed WiFi sync from AS 4+ for security reasons). The procedure is documented somewhere here, I just don't remember where exactly.
Great! Many thanks! ;-)
whoops...
Just another think....
What about hotspos?
I never search for a hotspot near me because I think I will not able to connect to a hotspot.
Can you exlain me the procedure to search and use hotspot? How can I see if the found hotspot is open or closed? Do you use some sw to connecti with WiFi?
I am not sure about your laptop, it depends on its WiFi card driver.
As for Jamin it is very simple: Turn on WiFi, it will automatically search for all available networks and display them stating if the network is open or secure. Then you just select a network you want and it will try to connect.
Also in settings->connections->Network cards you can see all the networks your device detected (even those that are not in the vicinity any more) when WiFi is on. Tap on a network to change its settings (like encryption type if any) or tap and hold for a menu.
If you don't mind wasting space on .NET CF 2 You can download a free app called Hitchhiker that helps auto-configure WiFi network connection.
Just remember: even if you found what looks like an open Hotspot it may be just an unsecured network that doesn't provide internet acces ot the network may block devices by MAC address, in this case it will show as open but you will not be able to connect.
Many thanks! ;-)
So, is it possible that I can connecto to a hotspot but I can't use it or if I see the hotspot connected that means that I can use it to surf the web?
After the connection is estabilished what I have to do or confiugre to surf the web using that connection?
Thanks a lot guy! You're helping me so mutch!
Whether you have internet access or not once you are connected depends on the network (what you think is a hotspot may be in fact someones home network that does not have internet access). If it is a public hotspot you don't have to do anything once you are connected except to open Internet Explorer.
Sorry 4 my stupid question but..
what is the difference between accesspoint and hotspot? :-(
I'm always thinking (WRONG) thet accesspoint is home LAN and hotspot is internet...
The definition thing is kind of tricky. When you say access point some people might just think of a device with an antenna that plugs in to your network to extend coverage and others might say it is the same as hotspot.
Hotspot is generally defined as a public access WiFi network.
All of that is semantics though. When you turn on a WiFi capable Pocket PC or laptop it detects everything with WiFi around it.
It can determine if the source is another computer (Ad-hoc network) or if it is a router (real network), what standard it is (g/b) and whether it is secured (requires key) or not. Also if the network broadcasts SSID (disabling it is another security measure) you may learn its name, although it may be set to default, which is usually the router model.
As far as I know there are two ways to learn what you are connected to:
1) Ask who ever is in charge of it.
2) Poke around, and see what you get.
One more thing: There is an app (not free) called PocketLAN. It shows you the network (on your Jamin) just like you would see it in Network Neighborhood on the PC, plus lets you ping other computers and stuff. You may want to check it out.
Thanks man!
Well! Yesterday I was able to manage shared folder of my laptop from Jamin with WiFi connection.
Thanks a lot!
Now I have another problem.... I clear all my "wifi networks" (?) from the tab visible in the screenshto.
I also clear all my wifi networks from laptop.
Tha problem is that I'd like to configure somethink on my laptop in order to automatically connect from my Jamin on it.
I'd like to turn on the wifi on Jamin and receive the notification that a connection can be estabilish to my laptop...
I tryed a lot but I can't do it!
Is it possible? The tab in attachment what rappresent? I have to confiugure somethink there?
I'm always thinking that wifi connection are visible simply turning on the wifi of any device...
Is there some guide for dummys? I don't want to annoing so mutch... :-(

What are you trying to do? What is the problem you are getting?
If you start from the beginning I might be able to help you better.
In any case once you open 'Network selection' you will see two combo boxes - "drop down" lists.
You need to select same thing in both - "My ISP" than make sure when you connect to a network you select "The internet".

using ping with this ip(169.254.72.236) from laptop it shows success. but can't share folders and transfer files. when i try to open the pah from the file explorer in ppc or laptop it says 'unable to find network that support this ip address' either by entering the name of computer or by entering ip address

WIFI Internet Connection

Hi guys,
I've got a netopia router (Irish "eircom" broadband) and while normal internet connections via laptop or PC (with USB Wifi dongle) work fine I just can't get my XDA Mini S to actually access the internet. I have managed to actually get it to connect via WIFI however when I launch internet explorer and click on a link it says it can't access using this connection.
"Can't connect with current connection settings. To change you connection settings, tap Settings".
Under connections I'm not sure what to select as I don't believe I need to setup a modem connection or VPN - am I wrong here??
It shows "connected" in the WIFI settings, indicating my SSID etc. Could someone advise me on what else I need to set. Basically I'm obtaining an IP address and my laptop etc work fine, just wondering what more I need to do to bash internet explorer into submission on the XDA. Is is just me or are Microsoft making this very hard on the normal user..

MAC number given
IP address given (so I guess DHCP is working fine)
Leap tab and Enroll tab - all settings blank.

Start --> settings --> system --. Network cards
SSID shows Connected
Under Network Adapters tab : My network card connects to the Internet.
Adapter NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver. (not sure what difference this makes????)
I temporarily disabled WEP for the purposes of simplifying things.
Simple yet very annoying problem:
Go to Settings->connections->connections->advanced->network selection and make sure both combos read 'My ISP'.
Then, when connecting to your WiFi network select 'This network connects to the internet' (as I understand you already have this set under 'network adapters' so it should be ok).
THANK YOU!

How to tether Dezire Z to Win7 laptop?

I have a laptop connected to hotel internet via ethernet cable (Samsung Q330). I'd like to tether my Desire Z to it to share the internet connection (via either wireless or USB).
When I connect the phone to the laptop via USB, and select Internet Passtrough mode, the phone cannot connect to the internet.
In the Network sharing settings on the laptop, ICS settings I've checked the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" box.
What else do I need to do to share the laptop's internet connection with the phone?
Get rid of all of that and install these (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ERN22YCO) drivers.
and enable tethering on your phone via settings>wireless and networks>tethering & portable hotspot

In principle that's what I'm trying to do, but it's the specifics of how to set up the connection in Windows 7 that I was struggling with. Could anyone offer specific advice on what settings are required?
Create an Ad-Hock. This would be pushing your labtop connection out of its WiFi so that your phone can hook up to it.
Open Network and Sharing Center > Setup a new connection or network > Setup a wireless ad hoc
Make the name and security... Bla Bla Bla
U can connect your phone to it now.
Next go back to Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings
Double Click on "Local Area Connections" (Your Ethernet Adapter Properties) > Sharing (Tab)
[Check] Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection
Think thats it. Been awhile and im providing this info off the top of my head.
Also if you say want to send your wireless net to your ethernet:
Skip the adhoc part and just go to Adapter settings, pick wireless and enable sharing.
