opera memory problem - Touch HD General

good day
can someone tell me how to move the cahe folder of opera browser from the phone memory to the card memory i have an hd blackston wm 6.1
thanks

Hi there,
you can try the following (sourced from mobilitysite.com):
Move data and cache around to save memory
By default Opera installed a bunch of files and keeps cache in precious application data space (RAM). At least with the WM2003se version. By moving all of these files to a CF Card or SD memory stick you free up valuable RAM.
1) Edit the "Opera.ini" file located in "\Application Data\Opera"
2) Go to the "[User Prefs]" group
3) Change "Opera Directory=\Application Data\Opera" to a location that you would prefer such as "\cf card\opera"
4) Change "Help Directory=\Application Data\Opera\Help" to a location that you would prefer such as "\cf card\opera\help"
5) Move the following files and folders to the location that you specified above:
cach4 (folder)
help (folder)
imgcss (folder)
startpage (folder)
styles (folder)
chartables.bin
cookies4.dat
global.dat
opcacrt6.dat
opera.dir
oprand.dat
opssl6.dat
viger.dat
vlink4.dat
You are left with these files/folders in "\Application Data\Opera"
skin (folder)
opera6.adr
input.ini
opera.ini
english.lng

Try connecting via Activesync on your PC to locate the Opera.ini file, not through File Explorer, Resco Explorer, or Total Commander. If you still cannot find the file, on your PC, go to the Control Panel, Folder Options. In Folder Options on the View tab, under Hidden Files and folders, select the Show Hidden Files and Folders radio option, click OK.
1.Connect your phone to your computer, and connect to ActiveSync.
2.Open the ActiveSync window, then click the Explore Device button.
3.Navigate to \Application Data\Opera 9.x.
4.Find the opera.ini file (If you don't have file extensions enabled, it should just show as "opera".)
5.Copy the file to your desktop.
6.Open the file in a text editor, such as Notepad. Immediately do a File>Save as and rename the file to something other than opera.ini. This is your backup, just in case.
7.Now open the original opera.ini file. Scroll down to the [User Prefs] section and insert the following line: Cache Directory4=\Storage Card\operacache\. (Note: "operacache" can be renamed to anything you want.) Save and close the file.
8.Copy the new file back to your device, into the same \Application Data\Opera 9.x.
I'm not aware of any other ways to get around this.

Hi Abiis,
Yes. Unfortunately, this will affect the speed of your browser. I'm not saying you should try this, all I have done is posted a possible solution in reference to your query. I personally wouldn't recommend putting the cache on the storage card as this will result in slowing down the browser and possibly make it crash more often.
It is entirely up to you whether you try this but if you do not want a slow and laggy browser, then I would suggest you avoid doing this.
Good luck

Memory savings!!

UPX rules! This was mentioned off-handedly in a thread a day or so ago -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=51984 -- and it is simply amazing! It packs exe and dll files at about 1/3 the size, plus they run faster. More information here in Universal forum -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=49990&highlight=upx
Here is how I found it works.
1. Unzip the program on your desktop computer, someplace simple to find (like "c:\upx")
2. Copy the exe and dll files from your ppc over to your desktop into that same folder. (I backed up AND saved backup copies of the files before going on.)
3. Go to Run and type cmd to open a command window. Use cd to navigate to the folder ("cd .." until you get to root, then "cd upx" or whatever directory you used.)
4. type "upx some.exe --brute" and magically the file reduces size by about 2/3! Amazing! Same name as before but smaller.
5. Copy the new files back to your ppc, same folder as before.
NOTES:
1. You may have to stop a program before you can copy back (e.g., VoiceCommand) or disable if it's a Today plug-in (e.g., PocketBreeze).
2. Only do this with programs you installed. If you compact a program in ROM, you will save nothing.
That's it! I'm no uber-geek, so if I can do it, so can you. But I thought the step-by-step might be helpful to other mere mortals.
Looks cool, but I have 2 gigs storage space so I won't be running low anytime soon.

Agree... I only did this with programs that I installed into main memory.
I am glad someone noticed my previous post! lol
I have pretty much all my exe's on my main memory and storage card compressed - but use upx compress your_program.exe command as file will open faster than with the brute command.
I use it to speed my device up and save memory - try it definite speed increases esp on the large files.
A word of warning though backup all you storage card and programs on main memory occ an exe or dll compression results in the file not working so has to be replaced with the original. (this happens more frequently with the dll's and thats why i decided to leave the dll compression well alone for now)

Yeah, some people read all the way to the end of a thread.
Could you explain the exact syntax you use? Possibly:
upx --compress your_program.exe ?
Or what?
Yes ok if the program was called explorer.exe
From the command prompt: upx compress explorer.exe
simple as that 8)
LOVE THIS PROGRAM!!!! This thing works great! LuXx

In the ActiveSync on your PC, hit the Explore button with opens it into a File Explorer window. Then you can drill down to /Windows, copy the files, and paste them into the UPX folder. Don't forget to backup!
Also note improved syntax in previous post:
"upx compress program_name.exe"

Those are in ROM so this really won't help. Just works with apps you install.
I just used UPX on a whole load of programs and dll files and saved a whole chunk of space!
For users that have not given this a go yet, it is important to make a backup of the file you are about to compress! Even though they might compress successfully and still appear to run, you may encounter some oddities. For example, I just shrunk down the registry viewing/editing plugin for Resco Explorer and whilst I can still edit it etc I found that some of the dialog boxes are missing some caption text

How to save OPERA Cache, Temp filrs etc to SD Card?

Hi!
Can anyone tell me how to force Opera 8.6 to save all Cache, Temp files etc. on SD Card?
Thanks
Hi, explained by myself there...

RE
Let me guess
1) make a copy of opera.ini in "\Application Data\opera\opera.ini" to PC
2) Open and edit With pc WORD program
3) add "Cache Directory4=\Storage Card\(your location)" under [User Prefs]
4) Copy back the Edited opera.ini to PPC "\Application\Data\opera\opera.ini"
Taken from another forum. However, 1 problem. I could not find my opera.ini file

Is there a way to edit/modify a protected file in \Windows?

Hi
I'd like to edit the file Preconfig.txt in \Windows. This file is protected. Is there any way to make a file in \Windows writable?
Thank you
Jean-Yves
If I recall correctly, you can copy the file out of the windows directory to another directory and then paste it back over the top of the protected one and then you can edit it.
I may be wrong though, so sorry if I'm leading you up the garden path!
What Codenix said is true, if the file is inside the ROM.
If the file is 'protected' in terms of attributes, you can use Total Commander to disable the attribute first.
I tried removing the read-only/system attributes in Total Commander in some \Windows files on my x01ht, but every time the attributes are reseted back! How to avoid this?!?
yes i have the same problem with you~~
although i use active sync to copy the files to ppc \windows
it also block me and say protected
and i want to copy a new phcanOverbmp.dll replace the old one....
what should i do???
can some brother help~!!!
Some files are in use and cant be unprotected and written over in this manner.. the only way to do it when it fails like that is to cook your own rom... which we are still trying to do, but get closer every day
And for the phcanOverbmp.dll we have cabs in the upgrading forum for this.. read here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=287829
and why if i want to edit my start menu items from ASync it don't work?
The files are unprotected but from active sync explorer i can't delete/move it... with resco explorer there are no problems!..
Also.... it interrupt file transfers if i try to copy thumbs.db.. included in win folders :x

I had the same problem - ActiveSync seems to not have the necessary rights for these files. The methods described here solved the problem for me. Yes, the text behind the link talks about problems with registry access, but the reasons and solutions for both problems are the same.

That may or may not be the same problem. I would guess thumbs.db may just be in use (i.e., opened).

Relocating cache/history/cookies locations in PIE and Opera Mobile

My unit has been freezing up after some use. When that happens, my TenGO input method reverts back to the default tiny keyboard, which of course is unuseable in true VGA mode. I traced the problem to the fact that my browser had stored lots of files within the device and caused the memory availability to fall, depriving it from the programs.
I changed these browser files location to the SD card, and my TenGo input method right away came back by itself. The system also revert back to the normal quick speed.
None of these ideas originated from myself. There are many websites giving these tips.
Changing the IE brower cache, cookies, and history location:
---------------------------------------------------------
The IE working files are by default located at :
\windows\profiles\guest\temporory internet files
\windows\profiles\guest\Cookies
\windows\profiles\guest\history
First, use Files Explorer to create these directories at storage card:
\windows\profiles\guest\temporory internet files
\windows\profiles\guest\Cookies
\windows\profiles\guest\history
Then Use a registry edit tool,go to
\HKCU\Software\Microsfot\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and change the Cache,Cookies, and History value to \Storage Card\Windows\Profiles\Guest\Temporary Internet Files,..... etc
If you prefer not to edit the registry directly youself, you could alternatively, use SKtools (I use version 3.1.5) to do the following:
Start SKTool, then click Tuning
The first tab shows the current location of the above. Change it to the new locations: ie
Storage Card\windows\profiles\guest\temporory internet files
Storage Card\windows\profiles\guest\Cookies
Storage Card\windows\profiles\guest\history
Exit SKtools
Switch off the device for about 20 seconds before doing a reset. It is important that you do not do reset right away else the registry entry may not be effected. The switching off will cause the system to write out the new registry entries.
With that, its done for Internet Explorer.
Changing the Cache, cookies, and history location for Opera Mobile
----------------------------------------------------------------
Ensure Opera is not running before you begin.
First, create these directories using file explorer:
\Storage Card\Application Data\Opera
\Microdrive\My Documents
Then, copy Cache4, cacheOp Help imgcss skin strtpage style directories to \storage card\Application Data\Opera.
After the copying is verified to be accurate, clean the content in the above directories in the device, but leave the directory structure there (with empty content) just in case.
Then, transfer these files from device to storage card by cutting these file from device and pasting to storage card
-browser
-chartables
-cookies4
-global
-htm40_entities
-opcacrt6
-opera.dir
-operand
-opssl6
-vlink4
Leave these in device directory :
-brwoser
-de
-englihs
-html40.entities
-input
-ja
-nl
-opera.ini
-opera6.adr
-pl
-ru
-zh-cn
-zh-tw Note: I think this list of languages differ from country to country. Notice that I've replicated browser and html40.entities in both location because none of the websites I read mentioned them. I leave them at both location to ensure it will still work, but I'd later on tried removing them from one location at a time to establish where Opera would look for these files.
Make changes to Opera.ini file
----------------------------
Initially, I tried to use Note application to open Opera.ini, but found out that it can't seem to "see" the file. Same goes for Pocket Word. I could'nt find the solution from other website, so I decided to use the desktop notepad text editor to edit it.
a) Establish activesync, on PC, use explore button to copy from device\Application Data\Opera to say the desktop.
b) Use the desktop notepad to open the Opera.ini file, and make the following changes to these entries:
- Opera Directory=\Storage Card\Application Data\Opera
- Help Directory=\Storage Card\Application Data\Opera\Help
- Button Set=\Storage Card\Application Data\Opera\skin\windows_skin.zip
- Download Directory=\Microdrive\My Documents
- Home URL=\Storage Card\Application Data\Opera\startpage\home.html
c) Then save the document as Opera.ini, and make sure encoding is UTF-8
d) Copy back the edited Opera.ini from desktop to the Device's main memory. i.e \Application Data\Opera
Its done.
I'll continue to monitor the device performance over the next few weeks and see if the freezing still happens.

It does'nt work.
I tried to do what in "Leo Hints & Tips" for exp:
"1. Enable Hidden Default Games
Go to the Windows directory and copy bubblebreaker.exe and solitaire.exe to the games folder as shortcuts in Windows\Start Menu. Make sure to unhide system files to see the games listed."
I can't copy files as instructed (working with total commander) and if the files were copied I can't reach/see them.
I think you may have misunderstood the original instructions.
Open file manager (not total commander) and navigate to Windows folder.
Locate the file BubbleBreaker (it's 46K, not one of the others)
Highlight it and keep it pressed till you get the menu with "Copy" in it. Do Copy.
Scroll back to the top and go into "Start Menu\Programs\Games".
Do "Menu, Edit, Paste Shortcut".
As I'm a pedant, I renamed the shortcut, removing the "Shortcut to" prefix.
Then, when you go Start Menu & then Games, BubbleBreaker is in there.
Now I've just done that exactly as typed above, whilst describing it for you, so it should work for you.
Let us know if you still have a problem.

Don't know what to say mate - it's in my Windows folder. There's a bunch of files called eT9.Rhodium.xxxx and then eT9MyWords is after them (directly after eT9DeadKeys).
I take it you did unhide system files as previously suggested? (I'm not sure if you need to do that for the games suggestion).
I have a slide deferent question. I would like to delet exe file from thew windows folder but I can't because I can't select Delete, have anyone some advice?
delete exe file
it has been awhile since i have done this, also some files are impossible or almost impossible to delete.
if you have been trying to do it from ur phone, go instead, to your active sync/windows mobility center. click file mgt and browse contents of device, navigate to the exe u want to delete. i have done it before and it has worked on several ocassions. be careful on what u r deleting, you may want to do a google on it b/f u do it
if this does not do it, i got no clue hope this helps someone
