TOTAL NOOB, Sorry in advance but im lost. - Android Software Development

Where to begin learning about developing... im really interested but all i can find is like how to use stuff ppl have already done... like how-to's on boot animations or seriously over my head stuff like how metamorph works. i need to find some relevant info on the android system and how it works and what i apk vs adb vs xml is. can anyone be of assistance? pls.

I'd also be interested.

Come on man it says on the forum no noobs. I'm trying not to be a **** but all of your questions could be answered with 10 minutes of searching on google.

I am also interested in trying to know a little more about this so that I can help people instead of always being the one that needs help.

dude ur totally not a ****. i was just not thinkin. developer.android.com has soooo much good stuff to start. ty tho.

I'm a little confused as to what you want to know.
But actually I would check out http://developer.android.com/ and read through their Guide and learn about Android first, and then watch some of their Videos. After that, you could read through some of the tutorials on XDA regarding Android and just Google some of the terms used, such as SPL, Fastboot, ADB, Root, etc. You're right, most guides on here tell you how to do something and not particularly what it all means. So unfortunately, a lot of it, you will have to search for.

haha, you joined this forum this month, and you think you can undestand it all?
I have been here a little while..I still get surprised with what I can find on this forum.
If I want to learn something new, I spend a great deal of hours trying to find something I can use, and when I find something, I spend alot of time reading up on it, searching even more in the same topic.
All in all. The wiki is not perfect, the forum is not perfect, but in my oppinion, its dam close. I know a bunch of paysites that provides alot less info then you find here.
We are a bunch of ppl who love what we are doing, but demanding more and more and more is not the way to do it.
And the funny thing here is: Imagine if you got all the answers, and are happy with it
Imagine then...In a few days, another guy ask the same question, ofcourse you help him....and then, in a few days, another thread is started with similar questions. and so on...
Then you start thinking; hmmm, maybe we should make a sticky with this info, so that the noobs dont ask so many times, I will make it easy for them.
So there..you got a sticky with the topic, and alot of good answers (now you have become a more experienced user, uyou are getting good with the terms used here, you know what stuff means, like in.ex RUU, ROM, Hard-SPL etc..)
And again, you are happy to help ppl out, you start using the language used on this forum, you use the knowlege you have mastered in some degree.
And your sticky is full of wisdom and knowlege.
But...after 50 guys have asked the same question (in many diffrent ways, nice, begging, cursing, hateful and so on) you start thinking:
Dam, will those huys never learn to read? Hell, I have given them everything I know, the best way I can.
You are starting to become lazy with posting in your sticky, cause you have done so before, so many times...even on pm (private messages) ppl are asking for personal guidence, and they need it now (and your girlfriend is waiting in the bedroom, or dinner is ready, or you need to go to work, or you have damn much stuff you need to fix with the latest w/e, and are quite finished with that old ****, cause you have moved way past that stage long time ago )
And suddenly you find yourself writing something like I am writing now...

OK. we will change ALL...we will make it like in other forums...a "How 2 post" so that EVERY post looks the same...so that noob can follow...
BUT YOU check ALL NEW post if they are posted the right way.
hahahahahahaahaha
NO man. IF you cannnot follow the instructions in the threads...DO NOT FLASH!!!
I spent 1 year ONLY READING before flashing my first rom!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO donĀ“t come here with 5 posts and tell us how to do our job
Well i dont wish to be this forum like any other "plx crack this phorumzz", i think its just as it should be.
besides, when i started flashing my htc devices, it took me 10 mins to find xda-dev's, and another 30 min to figure out what buttons to press to get the stuff i wanted to have.
so dont tell us its too difficult - if youre not smart enough its not our concern.
use google for other forums if youre not pleased with the offers in here.

[Q] Creating a build?

I know posting this might incite some flaming, but all I'm looking for is an answer.
I've done a quick search and turned up no results on how to create your own build. I used the program that was made, but that has turned up a lot of errors for me, and I would prefer to learn how to make one from scratch.
Writing a full guide would be time consuming, but if someone could at least post a few links of where to look; I would be very appreciative.
Sorry if this has been posted somewhere before but doing a search turned up no results for me.
Thanks in advance.

This is about developing an android build, this is the best place to put the question. Better here than in general. I'd rather put in the extra work and try to create a new build and try to contribute to the community, try and do my part

Frustrated Noob

Ive never been this frustrated in trying to find how to guides before. Damn it Im just trying to figure out how to install MIUI on my bell sgs2 stock ugkg2 2.3.3 phone. Do I need to update my firmware first and if so with which one since there isnt a bell sgs2 update yet and once i download this firmaware, how the heck to I extract it since they have a password and samsung-firmwares.com does not work for password. /end rant
First you need a rooted kernel which you have to flash with odin. Either cf-root or hellcats or nimph kernel. The first thing after using are rooted is to BACKUP YOUR EFS FOLDER! Then boot into cwm and install MIUI zip from there.
There is a QA thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238494
For guide on how to flash the kernel have a look in cf-root kernel thread. For easy efs backup use hellcats application or manually do it, with the instructions in the relevant thread.

Great thanks for the reply but how do I extract KG6 2.3.4 firmware? All the firmware Ive downloaded through Samfirmware.com so far has asked for a freaken password!?!?! and I dont have the slightest clue on where to find this password. Ive tried samsung-firmwares.com without any luck..../frustrated tweeker

That's because, as you said, you are a bloody noob. If you would have spent more than 20 seconds looking, you would have either find the password (even with google, the first result has it), either the thread explaining how to install it.
These forums have thousands (guessing) of members, imagine if everyone were an idiot like you, and posting **** like this, they would have to close it down.
password is: samfirmware.com
MIUI install instructions are here

Unfortunately its true driven mainly by users who wont search and fail to read instructions and want it all handed to them on a plate with repetitions of the same questions day after day .
I see no way around this problem as FAQS etc and rules are not read so the genuine user who asks a question as you did gets treated as if they could not be bothered to search read etc .It is partly due to the number of twelve year olds with Smartphones .

The problem Im having is first Im clueless in regards to android phones and 2nd lots of the information Ive been able to find in regards to rooting/upgrading firmware/updating roms are conflicting so that makes me insecure (I dont wanna brick my phone) 3rd I havnt been able to find...so far...explicit information that enables me to download and extract firmware with password for my bell ugkg2 SGS2.
Looks like Im gonna stick with stock till I can find a guide that goes through all the loops that a canadian bell user like me has to go through to upgrade firmware to 2.3.4 and upgrade to the latest MIUI.....

Bro, if you want MIUI you have to do TWO simple simple things from your stock bell state
go look for cfroot kernel thread (ill try to find it and link it for you) use the ones for kG2 firmware, this will root your phone and install CWM (the recovery needed to flash custom roms) this will root your phone on the bell firmware no stock required!
once this is done, download the latest miui zip, put on phone sd. boot into recovery and flash that mofo
You actually dont need stock/ kg6 at all to flash custom roms, but it is nice to learn how to use it for the sake of going back to stock!
I'm not changing my mind. They can take all noobs under their wings, but when I see incompetent idiots like you, I can't control myself. The password is on the same download page you got the file from, and I've already told you. You're here because you're bored, and you want attention, and you spent less than one minute searching for your answer. I know I am aggressive sometimes, but I do help people who put in some effort for something they want. I am also a beginner, so I'm not patronizing you, but what you failed to achieve has nothing to do with android at all. Now stop being a moron and creating a drama.

I sort of have to agree with you minus the aggressive attitude. If you can't answer normally then simply don't answer. You're not only making yourself look like a F*cking idiot to about everyone that reads on these forums, but you are also making the community look bad and there are quite a few wonderful people on these boards.
On a side note, I am a newbie to when it comes to android systems (btw there is a difference between a Noob and Newbie, to bad most people don't remember that) but I did manage to root my phone and figure out how to install stock roms and other roms, within 15 minutes of searching. There are plenty of guides here on XDA telling you what flashing is, what roms are, what kernals are, what odin is for, what root system to use (CF-Root) etc.
Its not that hard, so i do agree with you on that.

Newbie: Someone new to something, just starting out, learning.
Noob: Someone whos been around for a while and just wont learn, someone who needs spoon feeding, someone who doesnt want to help themselves.
We are all Newbies at some point, some get better, others turn into noobs.

And yes, I do know the difference between "noob" and "newbie", and I give him credit for correctly categorizing himself in the "noob" group in his thread's title. There should be CLEAR instructions in the OP of the Blackrose thread. This **** is ridiculous.
What do I need? Do I need the Android SDK? If I do, can I install it on a seperate drive? I don't need ****e clogging up my SSD. No one has stated I need the SDK, hence why I haven't bothered with it. If it is needed, then my point about none of it being CLEAR is reinforced.
Been trying to figure this **** out for hours. Seen countless numbers of posts with people trying to give instructions. I try these things to find that I have missed something because I can't complete a step or some other problem.
And did I mention how helpful the installation video was in the OP? Really good stuff, that.
Any actual help will be appreciated. Gonna jump off the nearest cliff if someone suggests to read through the thread again. Which seems to be the only thing that people like to tell others in these "help" threads.
Cheers.

No, you do not need the SDK installed. You do need the drivers for your device installed though, both for fastboot and normal mode.

Hours? When I got my first smartphone many years ago, I spend months lurking around this site trying to take in as much knowledge as I could before even attempting to flash anything. I wanted to make sure that I understood everything I was doing before doing it -- I did not want to blindly follow someone's step by step.

This is much more helpful. My apologies.
If I were the one creating these sorts of things for others (and myself,) I'd very much like it to be as simple as possible for the end-user. I'd like as much support as possible and I would be isolating the majority by making it more difficult than it could be. I shouldn't need a developer's knowledge to be able to take advantage of a developer's work.
I'm sure I just missed something simple. It wasn't the drivers. After I installed them and tried the Blackrose exe again, it stops at "waiting for device." Read through some of the thread, not understanding half of it, as you would expect, and didn't come across anything that could have helped me with my problem.
Any ideas?

I think what you posted above is where the problem is. People here are not creating things here for others. They are developing something, and sharing it with others.
And I guess, you didn't read the comment in the link in my previous post. Otherwise, it probably would have been more clear.
I'm not trying to insult. On the contrary, I am trying to help you figure it out, not have someone figure it out for you, in the spirit of xda-developers, not xda-support-desk.

lol, seriously?
There are 956 posts in the Blackrose thread alone. Expecting someone to read EVERY single post and absorb all of that information at one time is a bit proposterous. I'd bet it'd take a good 3-4 hours to just read that single thread.
I'm not saying we should spoon feed the newbs (especially the ones who can't follow simple instructions, like not posting a question in a forum with a big sticky at the top that explicitly says "WARNING - DO *NOT* POST QUESTIONS IN THIS FORUM - only tips/info/etc."), but at what point do we say... hey, this is how you do it, these 900 posts don't matter, or are outdated, or are duplicate questions...

I WAS being serious. Maybe it's just me, but I like learning, and I like helping those who like to learn. And don't tell me it's because people don't have time to read them...I work 60-70 hours a week, take post-graduate classes, raise 3 kids (which includes going to soccer games, homework, skating and dance lessons), and I still have time to read some threads, write up some guides, and help others.
If I want to flash something, I read the entire thread, so I learn from others' mistakes. When I had my Nexus One and I wanted Blackrose, I read every post in that Blackrose thread, up until I replaced the N1. I guess I have a hard time understanding someone who doesn't, and then complains that the guides should be better, and saying "this $%!& is ridiculous".
One of the things people need to develop skills for, if they're doing anything technical, is SEARCH. It helps a lot to filter out the crap, because it's indeed impossible or at least unreal to read threads of 300+ replies. But searching helps. Noobs should start working on their google-fu.
I agree that Blackrose thread isn't the simplest around. But just think - it's not more and not less, but bootloader replacement! The very thing that noobs SHOULD NOT TOUCH until they understand what they're doing.
So, the first response should be - if you don't understand how to do something, STAY AWAY UNTIL YOU DO. And indeed, go vent somewhere else. This isn't a forum for pleasing users.

So let me get this straight: You are looking for help (despite not having read the Blackrose thread), I give you two suggestions (check you driver install and flash the modified hboot manually, both are in the Blackrose thread), and you are still flippant and not happy?

There's a reason Google and the forum search function exist. Find them yourself. If you ever plan on coming on these forums in the future, the simple advice of searching will help you A LOT.

just a point of interest...the search function has been down for the past few days. certainly was when you wrote this post and continues to be unavailable at the time of my post now.
I'm certain it worked 2 days ago, as I only noticed it was down yesterday and I use it all the time, and as of now I'm able to make a search. Plus, Google is always available. The post might have sounded harsh but it's genuinely the best general advice you could possibly give. If you have a problem, chances are that the solution is out there, and it's unlikely that you're the only one with it. Guides though are stupidly easy to come by, so there's no point someone rewriting a guide if it's already out there. Plus, doing it yourself genuinely gives a feeling of accomplishment

You are *certainly* incorrect. The search function was down when you posted that "advice" and you failing to notice it changes nothing about the fact that it wasn't working when you chastised someone to use it.
If one doesn't know the correct terms to search for, or the English language well enough to search with, then telling someone to use google (do you honestly think that people don't know how to search or that google exists? clearly you telling them to "google" is not new information) is going to be useless "advice".
Being harsh or rude without any additional assistance is neither helpful nor desirable behavior. If you want to be helpful, post the appropriate links and *then* suggest the user to the search function.
Regardless, I'm not going to debate this.

Hmm, I'm now not so sure whether I was right about the search function being down since you seem so convinced that it wasn't, but searching is by far the best thing he can do and you know it. I really CBA to argue this now, but you'd be absolutely amazed at the number of people who don't search before posting. Just see how many people ask the questions 'how do I flash Android to my HD2' or 'what is the best ROM' without looking at the popup suggestions or googling it first. About your last point about being helpful etc., telling someone to search is helpful in its own right. It will save them a lot of trouble, time and getting flamed in the future.
