A quick question about build quality. - Nexus One General

Ok, so I got my N1 last week, and I absolutely love it. Two problems, though. The bottom half of the back of the case is loose enough to fit a fingernail in, far enough to always be feelable but not seen, and the other is that the top right of my screen makes a sound not dissimilar to cellophane being scrunched some of the time.
The problems are barely there, the crunch can only be heard at medium high pressure from less than 6 inches away, but do you all thank that these can escalate enough that I would regret not going for the new replacement route within the 15 days?

Sounds like you may have gotten a bad one, mine is rock solid.

about that sound your screen is making; could be something to do with the adhesive. People blow dry it with hot air and then press for 5 min.

I decided that since I have the disapearing signal far worse than most people here (-75dBm to -110dBm/completely lost signal in 10 seconds...) I called them up and they're allowing replacement. Hopefully it goes without a hitch...

adhesive loosening on HD2?

--
thats how mine is but in the bottom. not a big deal but i did feel it
several people reported the same thing before. screen not flush all the way around. there's no adhesive, the screen slides out of the outer sleeve if you remove the screws in back.
Oh...
--
mine does it on the bottom.
it feels like there is a slight gap in between the bottom bezel and the screen.
It's not a problem at all, but it sure is annoying at times.
On the left side of my HD2 the screen is easier to push in at the top and bottom, but it takes a lot of pressure to make it "squeak".
If I had a cosmetic issue, you can bet I would be on a waiting list to get a replacement. The looks on these phones are nearly as important as the performance, IMHO.
oh i deff agree, @op, if you only just got it id be trying to take it back.
Same on mine at the bottom - just barely - if you slightly press between the usb and headphone jack you hear a slight (guess it sounds like) a click and you feel it slightly move. When the usb jack is plugged in it stops Some play and I don't think its worth returning - also don't think it will get worse. Case materials should have been a little more rigid. Think if you get a hard shell case or aluminum skin - when they become available you won't notice it. Talking to other guys with the HTC branded Euro version their build quality is a bit better. Think its pretty much the same with all HTC stuff - their branded models (TYTN TYTN II etc.) were build better than the AT&T versions - they also cost a lot more because they aren't subsidized.
Personally feel the HD2 of all the MS phones with the exception of the HTC TYTN I is the most solid. The Fuze which I just got rid of was probably the worst. The case was ok but the front keypad was pure junk - out of the box the thing felt like it was going to break and it never sat "square" in its opening. The USB ports on all of them were really weak and were super loose out of the box. The slide out keyboards always loosened up and had too much play.

For me, the Touch Pro 2 has top honors when it comes to "feeling" solid. My sister dropped it the other day and cracked the bevel, with a large triangle missing near the volume rocker and three other cracks on the bottom, top and opposite side.
I am encouraging her to return it and claim the insurance, but since there is no change in the quality of the phone's operation, she wants to keep it.
Again, for me, the TP2 seems more solid than the HD2, but the HD2 is very well-built compared to other phones. I am so paranoid about even putting my phone down on a hard surface, due to the sharp edges of the camera mount and the light metal case.
I will be installing my new invisibleSHEILD as soon as sirphunkee and I can make the time to meet somewhere clean (I have a 2yo at home ). I imagine my paranoia will drop a bit then...
I dropped my phone while working out at the gym.
I was on the treadmill, and dropped the phone from my hand to the treadmill belt, then it flew out (i was running pretty fast at speed 7) and ended up hitting the wall behind me. Well, I freaked out and ran over to check on the phone.
Even though I had NO protection, the phone was perfectly fine. Only a tiny scratch that's barely visible on the top left bezel, and everything was fine.
I really was surprised at the sturdiness of the phone.

My TP2 fell out of my hand in a parking lot, the thing didn't hit hard, but it left a small scratch on the screen (it was visible, but wasn't too obvious) and then some nicks at the corners of the device. It did look used. I returned it to T-Mo (I was still within 14-day remorse period) and used the money I got back to get an HD2 instead (for some reason I didn't qualify for either the full or the 11 month upgrade price, only 50 bucks discount... now that I think about it, I should have gotten it at full price, also, the day after it arrived (ordered online) T-Mo came out with the 2 for 1 smartphone, but alas, a new line was needed and I had no use for it).
I've dropped my HD2 at least 4 times since and there's not a nick on it. I figure the glass screen helps (as opposed to the TP2's plastic), even if it's a finger print magnet. I also have no problems with the screen or bezel being uneven, even after dropping it, nor have I had any single of the problems people complain about, so, go figure, I got the perfect production HD2.
Whew.... OK. Soooo glad to hear this isnt only my device. Mines is on the bottom. I also dont see it getting any worst and its so minor right now its probably not worth the hassle of returning. I tend to keep the gel case on it anyway..

I had an issue with mine creaking, on the bottom. Mainly when I was pressing the start key, or back. Got a replacement and it seems better. For a phone seriously delayed I don't get how the quality is so terrible.

Was it the camera lens or the casing around the camera?
After watching the tear-down video I could see how the camera casing could be improperly installed and loosen after a bit of handling, but I thought the lens was pretty solid...

I disagree. Not sure if I got lucky or not, but my phone is in perfect condition despite being a month old and spending most of that time in my back pocket.
I've sat on it countless times, dropped it from my hand to the floor twice and dropped it from the car holder to the console in my vehicle so many times I can't count.
The only problem I have is with the SMS freeze, and I've solved 90% of that by keeping my inbox clean. If I have the money for a class 6 microSD card, I'd bet on having solved the other 10% of my problems.
Since upgrading my radio, I don't have any problems with dropped calls, missing texts, loss of 3G or any of the other popular issues that seem to be plaguing the new owners.
Since bad news always travels faster and wider than good news, one simply can't infer from the issues being discussed here that they are the norm. I would suspect a very small percentage of the HD2 owners frequent the forums here, and of those another small percentage are having hardware issues.
I've been through a few of these new phone releases here in the past and from my experience I would say that this is pretty normal for the first few months of a phone's release. In another month or so there will be a firmware upgrade to fix the freezing and icon switching, then a lot of the issues will switch from hardware to software. Soon after that, I expect everyone will be clamoring for the release of a Windows Phone 7 ROM, followed a few months later by a newer, faster phone that everyone will be switching to. A cycle, vicious but almost predictable.

Should I replace my Epic

I'm about 2 weeks in with my Epic. I love the phone, so I'm not going to get rid of it. I am having some issues and I wanted to ask you guys before I go back and get a replacement.
My top complaints:
1. Slider wobble. I'm pretty good about opening and closing the keyboard with two hands, so I'm not sure why it's wobbling. The left side is ok, but the right side (if help in portrait with the keyboard closed) wobbles a bit.
2. Dust in crevices. Not under the screen (yet?) But in the entire border of the screen, between it and the bevel. Not terrible but will it get worse?
3. Tinny earpiece. It rattles a bit on the high volumes. The speakerphone actually sounds better.
4. Charge time. If I'm using the phone and I'm connected to USB, I don't think it charges at all.
Most epics will have slight wobble. If it is severe wobble then get it replaced.
The phone wont charge on usb bc when we use it it uses more power than it takes in so that's why.
Dust in crevices can be easly cleaned can't it? idk why it ned to be replaced for that problem
Sent from my Epic 4G
I exchanged my first Epic because of a buzzing/rattling speaker at high volumes. Maybe test out another one before knowing for sure it is a defect (not just preference).
You have 30 days to get a perfect phone, so use that. The speaker alone would justify the return.
It took me a few returns before a got a perfect one. I wouldn't keep a phone with flaws. Return it and get one thats perfect.
Just a note, funny thing is, my perfect phone came in a form of a remanufactured phone from sprint using TEP
I replaced it this morning. Both the wobble and the earpiece are better!
Return it for a new 1. I went through about 5 Epics before coming across 1 with the best build quality. Keep in mind that I babied my first phones and they all eventually started to have a severe wobble when opened, and a vertical wobble (up down) when closed. These phones will wobble slightly when closed (screen will be a little loose from the keyboard) by design. With that said I've had this phone for about 3 months, don't baby it at all (but I do take care of it) and it's just as sturdy like the day I got it, no wobble at all. I wouldn't recommend a case since those might actually lend a hand in creating a noticeable wobble. If you're still under the 30 return policy... use it, it's your phone, your money, get the most out of your purchase

Important: Squeaky Z1 Compacts

Hello,
I've been struggling with a squeaky / creaky chassi or backplate for a while now. I've been replacing this device 2 times already, and I've been having the issue on all of the devices and I feel like there is some serious construction flaw as all of these devices are of different batches and manufacturing dates.
The squeaky noise occurs when pressing at the top left corner around the edges, and when pressign at the lower right corner. The issue occurs mostly where the h/w buttons are located, and around the MicroUSB port.
I would like to know if anyone else is having these kinds of issues as it's very annoying and I'm quite sure that the device ain't waterproof at this state.
No squeaky sounds on my phone in places you've mentioned. I remember I've once pressed the phone in some way and I heard the squeaky sound but it was one time and I can't repeat this behavior. In today life there is no problem - it's the most solid phone I've ever had.
Devstaff is annoyed because he does press it all the time and hear it.
Try stop doing that Devstaff and you won't notice it. All phones have that somewhere if you press it really hard.
Or Xperia z Compact isen't a phone with high build quality.
So you're saying if you squeeze it by force and it makes some noise it's a construction flaw? Anyway I don't notice anything, however I also don't often randomly press on my phone. So even if my phone had this 'flaw' you're describing I wouldn't care.
My device is definitely waterproof.

I have this. But only in the middle of left side of the phone. i dont have to press it that hard to get it. I think the 3M tape that hold the screen is not that good.
its annoyying because that is one of the resons that i wont put my phone in water. I dont know if its sealed when its making squeezy sound, and im sure we not the only ones.
i have this on the bottom of the screen
Mine is perfect. I don't have any of those issues.
@devstaff
I am sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with all 3 units you have owned.
Maybe it is a better idea to get a poll running at the top of the first page, so that you can see the general picture more easily.
I have lime UK, probably first batch of production since I bought it on launch (even though bought in uk, fw says otherwise, but still..).
I can report no problem on my Z1C. Holding or pushing won' make any noises. Waterproof confirmed last week, because now hot enough to go to the pool.
As a test, I was squeezing it hard (hard enough for my 1.5 yrs old daughter to cry if I was to do the same on her arm). I can hear something VERY small, like a tacky sound, as if double-sided tape was being pressed down, but you would need to be in a silent room at night to hear it.
Yesterday I pulled my case off pressing the upper right corner of the phone. I noticed that when the screen is on and i press there, that the corner of the screen begins to deform like when you press on a monitor screen. My z1c makes some squeaky noices too when you press on the corners
mine squeaks but is waterproof
I've had my z1 compact just under 2 months. I submerged it in ice water for about 5 seconds to show off to friends about a week after purchase.
I've replaced my plastic back cover with the glass one from the japanese s02-f. Haven't submerged it since but it's had the pressure of a shower head running warm/hot water on it for a few seconds and no problems.
I've never noticed the squeak before I deliberately checked for it. I've applied pressure in alternate corners before to see the amount of flex and there has always been some. I still consider this a premium built device (apart from the plastic back). Personally I don't think that squeak is an indication of a faulty unit. I'm surprised you were able to exchange it twice for that.
Same problems...

The issue seem's to be related to the small plastic frame, as if I look closely in the microusb jack it moves when I presses down on it.
No sounds coming from my phone.. solid device.
Mine squeaks if it's warm (battery temp 35c+), as that's roughly the temp the adhesive that holds the back on start to 'melt'
Initially my phone was solid but yesterday when I pressed the phones back i also faced this issue.. I think this issue is common after 1 or 2 months moderate usage..

no such sounds as of now on my phone its only under a month old though
Ok, this phone is really slightly disappointing for me. One month of usage and I have these sounds by merely holding it sometimes. Maybe choosing it over z3c due to design was a bad idea

I would say Yes, Z3C is a much better phone and I'm extremely glad that the store granted me a Z3C as replacement.
Hello!
Same thing with mine Z1C. After a month it started. I tried it in water and it's ok but that sound makes it less valuable. Some cheap chineese phones have better build quality than Z1C which is still expensive.
hi. i've had my z1 compact for almost a year now and i've had squeaky sounds since day 1. i can vouch for it's "waterproofness" though. i never had a problem after submerging it to water(pool, sea, river, lake, sink, etc). so i'm confident my device is waterproof. using magnetic dock to charge sure helped keep it that way. it's a tad bit on the expensive side but hey, i can still take shots underwater and make phone calls in rain.
one issue though, i still have flash bleed since i haven't replaced my back cover yet. and the getto ink mod looks bad so i keep flash off for now.

Just Got Phone, Scratch on Screen Within 10 mins

Phone just arrived about 15 minutes ago, very excited. I booted it up, unlocked the bootloader and it's been sitting at my desk waiting for someone to create TWRP for it. I was showing someone else at work and realized there was a scratch on the screen already. Hasn't been in a pocket or anything just laying on my desk. I really hope this isn't a bad sign about the quality of glass. Anywho, the device is insanely fast and very nice. Love the blue color, first phone I may continue to use for longer than 6 months.
I had two imperfections in the bezel around my pixel. I am having an advanced replacement shipped to me. So far, the phone doesn't really excite me, build quality wise.
Also, has anybody else have horrible WiFi signal with the pixel? I can't even connect to my WiFi network and I'm about 15 feet away from the router with no walls in between us. My nexus 6p has full signal and can connect to 5ghz signal when my pixel doesn't even pick up the 5ghz.
Hopefully this one is defective, or I will be returning the phone for good.

Apparently there's an update coming up to improve wifi reception. Might have been only for Verizon devices, I'm not sure.
I have had no problems with connecting to home or work Wi-Fi. I work in a hospital where I'll drop Wi-Fi between each floor, I have had no problem connecting quicky after getting to each floor. You have a defective device, although I did get the update from Verizon that the above poster mentioned.

Aside from the super large chin, I love the build quality. I think the fingerprint reader is slightly too high for me though, which if the chin wasn't as big would make up the difference. I haven't had enough chance to test WiFi reliability.
Mine was just delivered at home, I am still at work! How slippery is it to hold naked? I hated how my recent Note 7 and the sammys before then were all super slippery and hard to hold without a case on.

Its pretty slippery on the metal part. The glass kind of gives a little grip, but I think I'm gonna have to buy a case. Its very similar to my nexus 6p in terms of grip.

Mine arrived with scratches on back of the phone.
After contacting Google about it I was told someone within 24h will email me and I should reply with pictures.
Can't say I'm satisfied with response especially for such high priced phone.

Same thing happened to me. I just had them email while I was still on the phone with them and I emailed the pics back to them. Now they are having issues with their system generating a code to buy a new one. Still waiting for a response from them, but my replacement was approved.

Mine arrived today and due to a few people talking of scratches and imperfections I closely examined mine and found a small ding on the bottom bezel. The plastic wrap that the phone is encased in had a small tear/ding in same spot so it was bumped hard or dropped. Yes the ding very small but I just gave them $720 and don't want it there. Gonna call and see what they will do.
Meanwhile kinda liking my Axon 7
This crap is frustrating. My Pixel comes Tuesday and I intend to install the Skinomi full coverage screen protector immediately after pulling the phone from the packaging, just like I did with my Nexus 6P and OnePlus 3. But now it sounds like I'll have to inspect the rest of the phone first to make sure there aren't any noticeable imperfections on the sides and back. I already know the back glass is probably going to get all scratched up, which is going to be annoying. I think with this phone I'm going to have to care significantly less about it getting scratched up.

Spring contact not touching metal back

Hey, quick question. Is anyone else's spring terminal in the bottom-right-most corner too low to make contact with the back? Mine is and my gps seems a little inaccurate compared with other phones ive had in the past. Just wondering if this could be it.
There's lot of them. Bend then slightly up with a plastic knife something. Took my galaxy note 4 apart and did same thing to all the contacts. Got improved reception and GPS working again.
Yeah, I probed a little with a little pick tool but they're so small I need something even tinier like a sewing needle. And it looks like ill have better luck if I remove the back shell as there isnt much room to get at it as is. It is so low I wondered if it was intentional. Hence the reason I asked on here. When I look across the edge of the phone I can see the others peek above the plastic but this one shows nothing. Hope that makes sense, it is an awkward visual to describe.
I'm disappointed that I even have to consider opening my brand new expensive phone. But I also
dont want to fork over $20 to Tmobile to swap it. I've owned the G2 and the G5 before this and both of them had faults requiring replacement as well.
Mine is too, leave it
Hmm...strange. I just tested mine without my case or the battery cover, and my GPS locked on faster and better than it ever has since getting this phone. Seeing how recessed that connector is, I'd have to say it was intentional, though I'm not sure why it was made that way since there is a contact pad on the battery cover in that spot. I'm going to have to agree with wing_addict_usa, and say leave it as it is.
My gps sucks with just a simple plastic case on the phone. It goes bonkers. I swear it's the gyro/compass thing in the phone.
Did you calibrate it? And I didn't lay it on the camera lens. Just a flat surface with camera lens hanging off the edge.
Thanks for the replies, glad to know my spring comtact is normal. At least I can look elsewhere for the cause.
I've done the figure 8 calibration while in Google maps with no change. Using the "GPS Test" app it was struggling to stay under 35ft of accuracy.
The problem seems to be a little inconsistent though. After posting I was able to eventually get between 15 and 20 feet of accuracy. I wonder if it is emf noise while data polling or noise while charging that could be interfering with the reception of gps signal.
The poor reception occurred with my phone on a magnetic holder attached to my windshield driving on interstate highway. Other phones of mine normally get pretty good signal in that situation.
Ill keep an eye on it and post any new findings but for now I'm kinda stumped. GPS worked fine up until the day of my posting.
To be honest, I completely forgot about calibrating the GPS. It has been so long since I've had to do it since my last few phones had great GPS radios, and were accurate out of the box. I calibrated mine last night after having to look up how to do it again, and it seemed better this morning. Still not as accurate as the M8 I upgraded from, but now it's not all over the place like it was.
How do you calibrate it?
Just an update to my situation. I seem to be getting better reception now but not as good as my alcatel idol 3 5.5" . I can get down to 15ft of accuracy on the v20 and 10 ft accuracy on Idol 3 in same location.
Btw, The GPS antenna is located in the top plastic piece which has metal tabs that make contact with more of those metal springs. I removed mine and put it back on to see if I could get a better connection. It seemed pretty snug though and not much chance for a weak connection.
I'm not totally convinced that was the issue but I'm happy for now as the navigation seems to be more reliable.
Oh and the calibration is not the gps but the gyros so that the maps orientate correctly to the position your phone is in. Its done by moving the phone in a figure 8 pattern. There is also a leveling calibration in the menu somewhere that has you set the phone on known level surface and then press calibrate to zero the level to the phones position.
The figure 8 is the one I was referring to though and now that I think of it, not much use for GPS reception.
