Week old nexus one, already dead pixels. - Nexus One General

Well I received my nexus one about a week ago and I absolutely love everything about it...
Unfortunately I've just noticed two dead pixels on the screen. One top left and the other bottom right. Both about an inch in from the screens edge.
I've seen a lot of posts of people complaining about clicking edges and dust under their screens but I'm pretty sure this is not dust. The specks look identical to each other and are tiny in size. They are mainly visible on light/white backgrounds.
Unfortunately I live far away from any of the Google supported countries so doing any kind of exchange is going to be really difficult :-(
Anyone seen similar issues? Any suggestions?

There's a coupla apps on the market to check for dead pixels.
All they do is flash up white, black, red, green, blue so you can see what pixel is stuck. It might be worth trying one of those just to make sure they are actually dead pixels.
If they were working before, they might just be stuck pixels, and alot of toggling between colours may unstick them.

But if it was a stuck pixel then you would see it lighting up on dark backgrounds but these are only noticeable on white or bright backgrounds.
BTW I have already tried the market apparently and no joy.
Has no one else been noticing these?

I had one stuck pixel that appeared a couple days after i got my phone
but i fixed it and it came back like 5 times.
But knock on wood its been 4 weeks and it hasn't come back.
Mine was weird it would only show on the lock screen and it was very random but once i swiped to unlocked it went away so it wasn't that bad.
If i were you I would return it especially were its two pixels and software isnt fixing it.

OLED have very deep blacks so its hard to tell if its stuck on black or if it is dead
...anyhow if you cant fix it you should return it.

Man returning it is a such a mission as it was bought in Singapore and I'm not even there any more...
I suppose I could find a way to send it back there and then from there back to the US.... heh. The problem is that I only received the handset about a week ago so if these kinds of problems have been reported since the launch whaat says the replacement wont have the exact same issue? Which would then be a massive waste of time and money ;(

Thats the problem i even set up an RMA to return mine but had a gut feeling i would regret it. So i canceled my RMA and prayed the pixel would eventually not stick anymore.
I didn't want to take a chance of getting a referb phone with other issues.

I feel your pain EVERY device that I get now days that has a LCD screen ALWAYS has at least one dead pixel. But to my surprise my Nexus One is 100% fine .

Dead/Bright pixels problem?

Hi guys.
I'm interested to know whether Hero sets from overseas are experiencing this problem. apparently, users who bought it in Singapore (where i live) have this problem, and it's pretty widespread.
just curious to see if the problem is limited to Singapore or it affects other territories as well
Hi. I have T-mobile G2 in UK and I also have dead Pixels. As Fact I know people have this problem and It's not rare. I didn't send it back cos I Can live with it but i know people who sent it few times and still have received with dead pixels. Sad but its true.
i got 1 tiny little bright one.
annoying at first but i forgot about it after a couple of days. theres more important things in life to worry about. besides, most bright pixels right themselves after a few days/months...
i'd live with one or two dead pixels myself, but people have reported up to 8 dead/bright pixels, so it's kinda worrying
I do have around 8-10 dead? pixels but you can't notice them. One of them is bright enough to notice on black backgrounds and menus, but you hardly notice the other ones.
It's kind of weird though, they all appeared after 1-2 days of usage.
I have 1 bright pixel after 2 weeks using. The shop don't change the device with one dead pixel. Sad. In Hungary/Europe.
2 bright spots here. they are really tiny tho and i only ever notice it while booting which is not that often. no dead/stuck pixels on my hero *yay*
stuck = bright
sounds like someone needs to create an app for Android, like the apps to fix bright pixels on normal computer monitors, where u select the region on the monitor where the bright pixel is and the app constanly flashes different colors...sometimes rectifies bright pixels after a couple of hours.
i believe some of the bright pixels might well be enclosed dust ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=554288
i have to say that i don't have ONE dead pixel on my screen. It's really great. My past device (xda orbit 2) also had another problem: dust gathering beneath the display. i don't have any issues with the build quality with my htc hero and i'm really picky too.
it's an unbranded german white HTC Hero.

If it was dust though, wouldn't we notice an increasing number of bright pixels as the days pass?

i haven't looked into this myself ... just quoting other people here.
the people in the other thread seem to have come to the conclusion it is dust enclosed in the assembly process. the seal around the displey seems to be quite good ... so no new specks of dust over time

Me too, I have 8 - 10 dead pixels but it hardly to notice them! you will notice them when boot the device.
Regards
i am not sure if mine is considered dead pixels but when the device boots up, the upper right side seems to be brighter than the rest of the screen (light shining out more from there)
however, once the device is booted up, it is no longer noticeable, maybe becoz the screen is not totally black. the only way thus far i can replicate this is to shutdown and boot it up.
does anyone have this issue?
Yeah, I also got the brighter screen in the upper part of it during boot, I think it is because of the backlight to the device so I don't think it's you really need to worry about.
But concerning the topic, I also experience dead/bright pixels during the boot up, around 3-4. I didn't even notice them during boot before I saw this thread and decided to take a closer look, not that a huge problem for me as i can only see them during the boot, and neither got I the patience to wait for it when it is at service.
first day with my hero from orange france and 1 dead black pixell !! RRRRRR
Use this soft to be able to see more pics dead: --> http://fr.androlib.com/android.application.vidyaworks-oxeye-qqn.aspx

Ugghh.. i think i have a stuck pixel!!

Its right at the bottom of the screen on top of the P in Phone on the HTC dock. Now i've heard that for a pixel to be stuck, it should be only one colour. But the weird thing with mine is that it appears to be a different colour depending on the angle i look at it from. It changes from green to red, and i think blue too. Is this stuck or dead, and anyone have tips to sort this?
Im kind of annoyed because my phone is only 4 days old. And i don't want to send it back because shipping could be costly and take weeks to months.
I have fixed stuck pixels in the past by pressing quite hard on the screen and "massaging" the spot. Be careful not to press to hard, but it can take quit a bit of pressure. There are several causes for stuck pixels, and this wont always work, but from what you have described, this probably will.
You may have to apply pressure slightly offset from the pixel.
Good luck!
I dont know how hard to press, im scared i could do some damage to it. The screen feels like glass so i dont think im reaching the pixel..
DO it when the screen os on, preferably with a white background. Press untill you see the colours go funny.
Its pretty sturdy dont worry too much about breaking it. I havnt actually done it with a DHD, but i have with an iPhone and a G1.
i wouldnt press on the glass lol, your risking breaking it then warranty wont be covered you might just have to either live with it, or send it back to handtec asap.
seems like you got a bad unit stuck pixel and sim gap cover, still surprising since mine is from same handtec batch as yours and its 100% perfect

No matter how hard i press, the colours dont go funny. I know what you mean by this, i have a stuck pixel on my laptop too and applying even a little pressure and the colours change because the screen isnt protected by glass, but by plastic. But doing this in the DHD is another story.
Do you have a Desire HD JamesBarnes? Could you try it yourself? Pressing on the glass until it flexes seems far too risky imo.

I think i'll live with it Im in no mood to send it back and have to wait even more.. i guess im cursed because all my gadgets get stuck pixels. My old psp, my laptop, and now my DHD.
I just tried it, and had the same result, no joy. I guess that means its well built though
See if you can find a stobe application, sometimes rapidly changing the colour can fix a stuck pixel too...
There are certain screen fixes you can run in the browser which flash the colours very fast which can unstick some pixels. I've used it before on a laptop. Just google for stuck pixel fix. Not sure if they will work with the refresh rate of a phone screen but its worth a try.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I downloaded an app called JScreenFix and let that run for 25 minutes. It changes the colours of all pixels rapidly. But still no luck.
They might not replace it if its only 1 singel pixel.
If it's anything like LCD's then they usually have a specific number of stuck/blown pixels before they accept it as faulty..
Usually around 5 - 8 pixels mark...

Correct, but it's up to the manufacturer. For example, if I remember correctly, HP requires 3+ pixels to replace.
for phones its usually a zero dead and / or stuck pixels. you will have to send htc an email asking about their dead stuck pixel policy

Sh***y Display & 5 exchanges...

Hi to all,
I would like to share my brief experience with Galaxy S2. After changing 4 phones when I saw defects on the screen of the 5th one I fed up and returned it for good.
The manufacturing quality of these displays are absolutely garbage on these phones. I own SGS and the screen is perfect. I expected the same thing with SGS2 especially if I pay 700 for a phone. when I came home and compared 2 phones I was disappointed.
Here is my experience with 5 phones. I live in Toronto so these phones purchased locally. First three of them from Best Buy, last 2 from Bell.
1.) Colors were fine but there was a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. A black dot. I exchanged the phone.
2.) In store I checked the phone for defects and couldn't find one (because of bright environment). I went to movie right after the purchase and realized in 2 min something was wrong with colors. When you dim the light, there was no grey. It was purple. keyboard was purple, gmail was purple. I exchanged it.
3.) Colors were so so. Still had a visible pink tint on it. and when you tilt the phone and view from different angles colors were changing, having a blue tint. If you view with 90 degrees it was pinkish again. (there is no such problem on my SGS)
addition to this, when in a dark room if you open a pure black picture the screen was showing some defects (dark black lines and spots on screen).
When you pull down the status bar, in low brightness there were some bands.
I returned the phone, got my refund and wanted to buy form somewhere else to see maybe its a batch problem.
4.) I went to another place. Got my phone. Screen had no defects but it was like someone pissed on it. It had a yellow tint. whole screen. colors were so pale. I actually kinda missed the pink tint. which was better and giving more vivid colors. I exchanged it the same day.
5.) It had a pink tint( which is ok since I got used to it). It had no banding when you pull down status bar and displays pure black very good.
BUTTTTT!!!! when you pull down status bar there was a half centimeter diameter white spot. And once you see it u never not see it. It was there in every pic (mostly grey colors)
I had enough and returned it. I wish I could find a good one like my SGS(which I didn't have such problems)
I tried 5!!!!! phones and none of them had a perfect display. Such a shame for a 700 dollar phone. I decided to wait and see if its gonna change in several months or not.
Maybe they shipped all the dodgy ones to Canada. I have a UK model (bought just over 2 months ago) and my screen is fine - no dead pixels, no purple or yellow tint...

Maybe they rushed the manufacturing for Canada. who knows. But one thing is obvious there are literally 2 different screens. I had been many stores. Many. And Checked maybe 30 display phones and from different stores and there are either Yellow tint screen or Pink tint screen.
Even if half of all the SGS2's have defective screens, the probability of you getting five in a row is 3%.
Yeah, maybe Toronto is receiving all the defective, returned ones. Or maybe you're just really unlucky. Or cursed.
Wow, that's a string of badluck. I've had mine for a couple of months now and have had no screen problems.

Yeah its probably because of my girlfriend. She never wanted me to get this phone since I am already in 3 year contract with bell owning SGS and had to purchase the phone with full price.
Also many first time buyers might not see those things. I have SGS at home and can compare. My sgs has a blue tint too but at least when you view from different angles colors don't change at all and not a single imperfection. And blue tint makes the whites brighter and less irritating than having a yellow white.

You should have kept number 4. Yellow tint was a software issue and KG2/KG3 fixes it.
I only had to exchange once due to 2 dead/stuck pixels on the bottom left. Haven't seen any of the other issues you mentioned.
Sorry about that my friend, Hope you get a good one soon.
My screen is fine, but i noticed something as you said. When seeing a full black color while using any screen test app. I see many lines like drawing if looked closely :

Exactly. However when I open the same test pattern in SGS and put side by side, my sgs is smooth ad butter. Nothing on it. Just pure color, no imperfections whatsoever.
I have a question to you. When you dim the light do your status bar and other button colors band whites (such as keyboard, swype keyboard) has a purplish tint? Is it normal or a defect?
When I opened keyboards those buttons appear purplish. In my sgs they are grey.
I'm in Vancouver and got mine a few days ago shipped from Bell. No problems here with screen colors or dead pixles. My son also dropped it on tile already and not a single scratch, thank god. Still waiting for my case from ebay.

Nothing else except that, and bro my phone is always having 0% brightness hehe.
and to be more precise those drawings on full black color looks like burns on old CRT tv when suddenly power cuts isn't it ? haha
Anyways, Colors are vivid and really better than my LED TV.
and no viewing angle problems.
Do i really need to worry about those drawing while on full black? though you see them only if you look closer or focus ur eyes for long
mine has a blue tint when viewing off angle
so is this not normal because my buddy's is the same

I dont know what is normal or not no one knows. But I am assuming if there is no color shifting when tiliting on my SGS this one shouldn't have it either.
I really wonder if people don't realize whether their screen is yellowish/purplish or their phones are just perfect.
As far as I see there is no natural color phone toronto by now. And belive me I am not exaggerating it. If you put those two phones side by side their color tint is completely different. What kinda manufacturing is this?
I can even say which stores in toronto have what colors.
If u wanna see purplish tint display phones:
-Future shop in dundas
-Bestbuy in dufferin mall
-Source in dufferin mall
-Bell in Eaton center (lower floor store)
Yellow tint display phones:
-Bell Eaton center second floor they had like 5-6 displays which were all yellow)
-virgin mobile in dufferin mall.
I don't even remember some stores. this doesn't mean if u buy from there u are gonna get the same color phone. Its totally random. These are the colors of display phones.
i dont understand man, i have mine for 2 months now in UK, screen is fine it is the best screen i have ever seen.

Apple has patented the concept of a display that completely works. If Samsung didn't have some sort of defect, Apple would file another lawsuit.

Yeah, gotta love the deadpan humor. Some members here are quite good at it.
I had a dead pixel when I ordered mine when it was released in UK about 2-3months ago. The dead pixel went away within 2 days of owning. Maybe your 1st device was your best 1 with a little more patience.
Theres no excuse to you having 5 devices with problems. I really think there might be quality control problems with the screen manufactors. But I do know this is probably a very small percentage since it doesnt seem widespread.
Wow man messed up. I bought mine from China and it's the best. Absolutely perfect no defects at all! Perfect just Perfect!
well I just got off the phone with Samsung and they told me that what I'm seeing is a defect
I don't know if I should exchange it for another one or just return it and stick with the Atrix

half of the screen has pink shading :(

As always, every samsung device I have owned except note 2 has screen issues. Im starting to hate this amoled tech. I had 3 s4's and everyone of them has this pink shade in some part of the screen. Now this note 3 has the same issue actually its worse. I think I need to get rid of this and buy a phone with lcd screen.
Anyone noticing the same issue or am I getting realy bad luck?

get your phone exchange or refunded asap!
it sound more like a defect than a feature.
LCD also has issues.
Mine had a cream tint over 2/3 of the screen, which was not to obvious until browsing certain forums, where you'd scroll a message up and it would noticeably change color.
I took mine back to the store for exchange, and despite showing them what looked obvious to my eyes, they just couldn't apparently see it... Luckily, they where kind enough to order a new one and exchange it anyway, so will see how the new one does on Tuesday.
Some people are blind to such things, my One X had the yellow spots, so sent that in, and the replacement was much better, to they point I could easily live with it.. My two nexus 7s are fine, and every other Samsung device in their store looked good enough that I'd be happy, so I feel justified in getting an exchange...
I sold mine and bought another, lost about 50$ . Newer one has yellow hue or tint in right bottom cornor in whites and grays. I deserve this I guess, I didnt learn my lesson.

Anybody having/had this weird display issue?

Hey all,
Yesterday morning woke up to my MZF's screen being all weird. Anything dark looks fine, but the white levels are very subdued and even seem to have a slight reddish tinge. And there's also these two black dots that wont go anywhere. Seem larger than just a dead pixel. This has been going on for a full day now; every once in a while it seems that the colors go back to normal, but the problems seems to always return.
Photos below show my MZF (right) next to my buddy's MZF (left). Both displays are at full brightness. Didn't purchase protection through Best Buy or Verizon, so I'm likely gonna have to deal with Motorola Customer Service. Yay.
Any one else seen this? Any ideas?

Tried those too, no luck. Have a new MZF on its way from Motorola, warranty is covering it.
I JUST sent my Moto Z Force in for nearly this same issue. I was cleaning the screen off and I had a black dot pop up and after about 3 hours of it showing up I had a bright yellow line running from the dot to the top of the screen. Warranty is covering mine as well.
I had the same problem with the color/contrast on my Moto Z Force, but without any black dots. Mine had the same blue tint/haze to the display. I did a factory reset with no luck. I am getting a warranty replacement today, but this morning the problem disappeared (6 days after the problem started). I think I'm still going to take the replacement.
I have a little different issue. Screen has 4 rows of multi colored small lines. Unreadable, yet the touch and buttons are still functioning, any ideas?
