Windows fanboy has committed a crime - HD2 General

Right I want to be honest here and admit to my crime. I have been the biggest winmo fan for as many years as I can remember. In fact since the Compaq Ipaq first product. Prior to that I was a dedicated Psion fan from the Psion Organiser 2 so I have been round the block a bit. I have also owned probably more than 100 devices! I have always purchased the next best device on the first day you could get it paying over the odds. I think you get the picture.
Now people in my office are Mac fans and I have listened to them bleating on about their IPhones and have spent my life making fun of their choice of toy smartphones. At first it was easy with all the silly faults the IPhone clearly had. Crap camera, No cut and paste, No MMS, No video, No Exchange email
Recently my wife has gone over the the dark side against my advice. I have spent years telling her just how crap the IPhone is because I love(d) winmo but.............
After days of playing with my wifes IPhone 3gs I realised just how wrong I possibly was. Yes there was faults still with the OS but frankly they were much less than I thought. I started comparing it to my clunky, totally unreliable, buggy and frankly pathetically over responsive screen of my Touch HD2 and had to decide to buy myself and IPhone an give it a try (I mean I could always go back couldnt I) so.........
I went out and purchased an IPhone 3gs last week and I am sorry to say that it is simply head shoulders, body and tail better than any windows device I have ever tried.
I have spent the last week chuckling to myself about how stupid and ignorant I have been and how lucky I am to have made the move. The IPhone is awesome. Its operating system is unflappable and never crashes or falters or slows down.
The apps (and there is a ridiculously massive choice) just work flawlessly. Some of the things I thought were faults are not so bad (background apps not working) and although it would be nice if it had a camera as good as the HD2 (it doesn't), I wouldnt sell my Iphone for any windows device. In fact I cannot believe anyone wouldnt feel exactly the same if they tried one.
I know its a cop out having enjoyed installing new roms etc for years but seriously I urge every one of you to try one. You may feel just like me if you do. It would take something special to get me back to windows mobile and HTC should be ashamed of themselves for releasing the HD2 with so many bugs. Having had so many HTC devices I feel a little betrayed that they didnt get this one right and it made me switch to the DARK SIDE!!!
For me I doubt there is ever any going back now. I am writing this just so other can experience the pure OS and hardware pleasure that is the IPhone.

I have had iPhone 3g and still own a 3gs along with a blackstone and a leo.
You are right about the fast & stable system of the iphone os & its hard to decide to leave the iphone once you fell in love with it (Thats why i still have the 3gs, cant decide )
The problem lies within the operating system and not the device. Its the Microsoft windows which is the culprit and not the htc device. Have you ever used a mac. It is way more faster, stable & safe than the Windows PC even mac having lower specs as compared to windows pc.
HD2 has great specs but the same damn system running behind it.
I wonder if there is a way to run iphone os on htc hd2 ?????
I've read somewhere on the net that people had tried to run mac os on windows pc with success. Have my fingers crossed.
Best of luck with your 3gs

Hm...i have to wonder if you seriously played / configured / flashed your HD2 or if you just judge by the stock rom experience?
With an up to date 6.5.3 rom, i don't see any problems with the HD2. You praise the iphone OS, yet compared to WM, there is hardly any accessible OS. The iPhone is a grid of shortcuts that each launch a program. Nothing else to do there, nothing much to tweak, to setup. It's perfect for your wife i am sure, but you as a former WM user,... are you sure you will not get bored? The greatest pleasure of my HD2 is flashing new roms and trying new tweaks, hacks and themes. I can personalize it more than any iPhone user could personalize their iPhone! That's what makes it great. In terms of performance, again, an up to date WM6.5.3 rom does neither lag nor run slow in any way. On top of that you have a screen with a vastly higher resolution. I would not want to downgrade from WVGA any longer.
Bottom line: Yes the iPhone has lots of apps, no they are not all useful, and yes you can do similar things on WM. It just requires more knowledge and work, which us XDA users do have, i think!

i have both the 3gs and HD2 .. both are great but the 3gs has the EDGE-
/T

Yes I agree but the hardware is some part of the problem. I had a HTC Touch Pro2 previous the the HD2 and could type perfectly on the screen without using the hardware keyboard. Switching to the Touch HD2 I expected it to be great with the new capacitive screen but it wasnt. Despite various patches and having the knowledge to be able to try various roms I still couldnt get it to type reliably at a decent speed. It was just rubbish. That was the same Winmo version I had on my Touch Pro2!
I agree the form factor on a HD2 is great but spoiled by some dodgy hardware and s**te software in hindsight. The Iphone OS is great and it makes me wonder if I have been as wrong about Macs as I have about Iphones. I am going to have a play on the Mac in our office now!

Yes in fact I tried about 5 different roms. I did also try ones with 6.5.3 but they were no better. I also tried two different HD2's as I purchased a second on a contract for my wife then sold it and purchased her the Iphone.
I know what you mean about getting bored and I also agree about the grid. Its a shame you cant organise it better but they are tiny faults I feel to the incredible ownership experience. Its early days having it only a week but my HD2 was driving me mad at this point. I found myself verbally complimenting the Iphone while I was out in the garden listing to music today. I know I must be going a bit mad but I am deleriously delighted about the Iphone so far.

did steve jobs need to create 4 screen names to say the same thing?

Yawn. Good for you. Whatever.
So how is this a general HD2 thread? Please let this drivel die now, rather than later when it turns into a slanging match, because that is clearly what the OP intends.
Have fun kids.

and in fact I have to say that when my iphone arrived I was still very unsure if I had done the right thing but once you play with one for a few days its then you realise. There are little things everywhere that make you smile. Type a url that is longer than the box and the font reduces to fit it on screen, try selecting something and the magnifying glass pops up to make it easy etc etc. The list goes on and on and I expect that Apple will keep adding to rom's. Microsoft have done next to nothing with theirs in ten years!

I was only trying to let others know my experience. I have been a member on here for years and contributing so this is no flash in the pan posting. Anyway think what you like. I have been totally honest but you can lead a horse to water but not make it drink!

Well, let's be perfectly honest here : there is not a single Windows Mobile device on the market that can match and the general responsiveness, consistency and easy of use of an iPhone 3GS. Nor the consistent UI experience or simplicity - sure, Windows Mobile may have more options and abilities to tweak and mess with, but to dismiss the iPhone would be a stupid thing to do.
It's got very nice hardware, with and extremely well written OS underneath - it lakcs things yes, but what it does have, it usually out performs that of Windows Mobile, avaliable on the market today, and for many people iPhone 3GS would be a much better choice than any Windows Mobile phone, there's no getting around that whether you like it or not. As much as I dislike the saying, "it just works". It's something that you can apply far more easily to an iPhone than a WinMo device.
Still though, it's not fore everyone, and I'm quite happy to have a device with an inconsistent UI, spats of Lag and random freezes, as long as it does it's job as a phone. Am I satisfied with my HTC HD2? Not really. Would I be more satisfied with the experience of an iPhone. Probably. Would I buy one? Hell no

I know it's a difficult one but then typing my reply and watching the screen scroll around while I type is just class.
I felt exactly the same for a while. I am not totally trying to put down the HD2. I have spent weeks telling everyone in my office that it was an IPhone but without all the faults but I was wrong. Actually it's like an Iphone but with a really poor os. The screen isn't as good on the iPhone but it just used more cleverly. The lack of background apps is just stupid on the iPhone but mostly its just great.

Just out of interest I also purchased a motorola milestone (droid) expecting android to be good but frankly it was truly awful. Windows mobile was a breath of fresh air after using that horror for a single day!

Closing this as relevant points now made.

Are you happy with your X1 ?

Hey everyone,
I own the X1 for quite some time now and I have to say that I am generally very unhappy with my X1. There is no hardware defect but I really hate Windows Mobile and the way the buttons are placed on the X1.
I find it very uncomfortable to place calls because the navigation is very laggy and unresponsive. If I compare it with the Iphone, the whole concept of the X1 is a joke.
I consider buying the X1 a pricy mistake
iPhone = Phone that can use PDA function.
Windows Mobile = PocketPC that can use Phone function.
So... what is your focus.... u choose....
I myself [[[extremely dont like what iPhone is]]] eventhough iPhone is fast and very responsive as you said, it is not for me.
I like something that I can play with and use it in the way I want. Unlike iPhone, "use it the way Apple want". [these are just my personal openion]
In my family it is 3:1, WM still the winner here ^^, my brother love his iPhone and it suit him.
I suggest you sell your X1 and buy a new iPhone, u'll be a lot more happy.
the x1 is a sexy piece of hardware and i love it however the winmo is a joke and whoever thought of using winmo should be sacked.
its so hard to use and everything requires effort. my w960 was superb, quick and easy.
surely se expertise could have created there own ui and made this device just awesome.
i voted for "not happy but theres worse". like i said before the hardware is just perfection but the software just destroys it.
Don't get my wrong people. I am not one of those Idiots that go purchase a WM device and then ***** that it's not what they expected it to be. I know all about WM and I have had 3 different ones in the past.
What I love about windows mobile is the functionality and complexity. You have a lot of software variety and functionality. Also there is lot's of very advanced programms you can find for WM that Iphone could not even run. But when I see the implementation of some of the software that is on the Iphone is get a bit jealous and frustrated. It all looks slick and works very fast. I was hoping that at one point we could run Android on our X1 but It looks like we are lightyears away from that.
There are just SOOO many irregularities in Windows Mobile. It's very unstable and chokes too often
I like my X1 (love it)
There is absolutley things that can be improved.
A new update is comming in a few weeks, X1 support told me today.
Haha it is Micros0ft... so that mean Macrorough.
I agree with u that WM is million years behind iPhone in term of speed and stability.
It is a trade off, iPhone run only 1 user task at a time and has very limited access to system components. The hardware and software are specific made. While WM are more open, user can run multitask, access to every bits of system component and customize it anyway they want(except to make it fast and stable ).
For me, I envy iPhone speed but I see no point why I have to slide between screens while I can do everything in just one small WM screen, why I have to swipe my finger to move to next picture while I can just press one button(imagine hundreds of picture and you will get finger muscles), why I have to use my whole thumb instead of my finger nail tip..... so many why why why ....... haha
Anyway iPhone is a great piece of hardware.
I'm happy with it right now, though I was hoping to get already some official firmware update and more panels but no news from SE :/
are they waiting for WM6.5?
Best phone that I have ever owned. Love it. No problems whit winmo.
More stable it feels to compare my old N73 what was slow and crashing 24/7.
I even think this is easier to use. Qwerty is awesome, screen etc.
There is just lots of things that I love in this phone.
Only thing what I miss is g-sensor, but not so big deal.
Seriously guys, I despise everything apple stands for. Sometimes eventough there might be hard evidence that apple has actually done something well. I still will refuse to every lower myself to the ranks of the fashion based air-headed society and submit to those wannabe stylish pricks. OHHH It's white ITS APPLE ITS NICE. Give me a break.
It's just that I can't stand the ignorance that some apple users live in.
And then when I try to show off with my experia and prove that it is actually better than the Iphone it get's stuck in a million ways and just totally puts me to shame :|
its okay but i dont think it was worth 800 bucks.
iPhone cant event copy a line of text from one application to another.
To compare what is better, u need to compare the same thing and to the same user group.
To compare a phone, iPhone sure better. To compare a PDA the picture is opposite.
I dont think it is a good idea trying to beat iPhone with Xperia or any other WM. not that iPhone is unbeatable but it is depend on people point of view.
Those who love iPhone, they like it that way. For them Xperia will never beat iPhone, no need to try.
I also dont c y u should b ashame. Try comparing a shortgun with a rifle which one is better? which one should be ashame? While the iPhone may like a rifle, fast and stable, WM is like a shortgun, more coverage and versatile but somehow unpredictable. They both have their own pro and con.
Just use what you want -> everyone happy.
800 bucks is way overprice for this piece. Quality and performance wise
I love the phone not too big not too small, it took me awhile to get used to the keyboard after my Hermes, but after that I have no issues with the phone what so ever.
But I love tinkering and changing things thats what makes Windows mobile so good.
It's my first WM.
However it's like my 5th smartphone from SonyEricsson.
And I must also say I love it.
Yes WM has it's glitches and little lags.
Some problems too.
However with FlashLite it's a beast,
browsing, email - very well done.
Actually also very fast in apps.
I don't really tweak it, but some small improvements make it my best smartphone.
Just today compared it's screen to iPhone - first time saw pixels in iPhone's screen! X1 looks like painted......

Every smartphones are overpriced.
Said u can buy a laptop at $200-300, just compare the matherial used.
Most highend phones are consider as lifestyle product which mean they can set unresonable price and customers like us will still buy it.
Look at those brandname women accessories, u sure noticed that they sell the brand not the product, matherial cost compare to price is a big gap. same here.

That depends on what you want to do. Does the Iphone have an RDP client by now? The on screen keyboard is best for people with tiny fingers and the screen resolution is too low for what I want to do. Why couldn't they make the iphone so it could be operated with a pen AND your fingers???
I need a business phone and the iphone is a best a cool looking toy.
I am extremely satisfied with my X1 as it is the best WM device I ever used after using HTC Diamond and Touch Pro.
I will never get a HTC ever in future.
I have used the iPhone and the Xperia, both.
I would agree that the iPhone is fast, sleek and stable, there are lots of frustrations that I had to bear! Firstly, Apple's copyright policies get to the nerves. Then comes the blue tooth fiasco. Then the SMS forwarding head-ache.
Then is the file-sharing nuisance. V-cards are never received. Audio-jack is made ONLY for the iPhone headset. You need to purchase another wire to connect your iPhone to your car audio. Although the battery is good, if there is any problem with the battery, its a big problem!! You can run only one program at a time. Deleting one call/sms is not possible without the extra softwares!
No video recording, if no extra software!
Xperia on the other hand is slow. However, if you soft-reset your device everyday, it works fine without any hang-ups. Multi-tasking is possible. Battery life is pretty good. Sound output is fantastic. Screen resoulution is a dream. Camera is a little shady, but still better when compared to the iPhone. I am thoroughly happy with my X1. I feel the price is pretty right too. Least that the phone becomes a commodity seen in everyone's hand! I'd prefer my phone to be exclusive and not a grocery item!
Its worth the money I put in !! Although I'm not entirely happy with the WinMo, thinking about the iPhone makes me love my x1 even more!
I remember having a Sony Clie' PDA in one pocket and an Ericsson GF768 cellphone in the other, once apon a time.
This is my first smartphone so there's no ground for me to compare it to any of these other units, but this little x1 is a beast in my opinion. All this hardware packed into this fairly compact chassis makes it one hell of a powerful unit. I get all the use of it that I possibly can.
Needless to say, I'm very happy with it.
So what? There are a couple bugs here, a few there. All machines dealing with these high-end technologies are bound to have software problems. I can happily deal with it.
Absolutely satesfied. I love my X1
I also have I Touch HD.
But I love my Xperia more!

If you do want a phone with 3G glitches, faulty software and occasional freezes / reboots then be sure to buy the iPhone. Ask my wife about her wonderful iPhone
Seriously though, just about every modern phone has some flaws and requires a restart every now and again ... its progress
iPhone simple and capable with loads of apps and support, sort of a "Tomy - My First Phone"
Android edgy and capable with loads of apps but not as many as iphone (most companies will release to the iPhone first due to the huge base of customers who will buy).
If you are happy having a simple interface with no options of customisation and are happy never being able to do anything your own way or take shortcuts then the iPhone is for you.
If you are happy to do a bit of tinkering and customise your phone then the Android is for you.
Both are amazing phones and look good and are easy to use. Specs wise Nexus one wins hands down.
If you love google and use Gmail, contacts, etc. And if you dont like iTunes and stuff then Nexus One is definetly the way to go.
But if you like all the crazy apps thats out on the iphone seems quite good for that, however Nexus One has got some really good apps aswell! A lot of people say iPhone is still easier to use. But I would say nexus one is just as easy and highly customizable which is cool.
All comes down to personal preference...
iPhone is obviously more stable seeing as OS 4 is going to come out whereas Android is 2.1, iPhone has less bugs and stuff im guessing..But Nexus one should be no trouble as your everyday phone and internet device!
I always fund iPhone really boring, with out jailbreak there isn't much in it.
Lots of apps and what else? I never had able to figur it out . If you coming from windos mobile i think you should get Nexus. You would love it.
I've been using WM since 1997 (PPC).
I've got my Nexus One yeasterday its my first Android device, i like it.
as far i saw iphone is mostly problem free and i want a phone with causes a little problems a possible but i have been with xda for more than 1 year and have gotten into the habit of customising so a phone with a little change in interface would be nice. the quality of the apps u get in the iphone is extremely good, u always get a nice colour full, smooth and simple interface. i personaly dont know about android apps but my experience of windows mobile apps is that they are ****. they come with 1980 style buttons and some times they don't even fit on ur screen cos thy were build with the developers looking at a different phone and the apps are expensive. so you see i don't want to go through that again.
I'm not sure there is anything such as the perfect phone since everyone has some different interpretation of what that is. I just received my Nexus One yesterday and I'm switching from the iphone, although I have extensive experience with winmo, palm and symbian. A few observations:
Build Quality: this is the best built phone I've seen in a long time. It has the exceptionally solid feel of the iphone, but still gives you the removable battery feature and expandable storage. In addition, it just feels great in the hand, nicely rounded with great build materials. Just overall top notch build and feel.
Software: I spent yesterday evening looking at the applications on my iphone and trying to find comparable ones on Android. I was successful for about 90% of what I use. The applications may look a little different, but the functionality is essentially the same and I haven't had any issues so far. There are a couple that I couldn't yet replace like the kindle app, cnn and the NY times, but I expect they'll be there eventually. A few others like ewallet have equivalent products on android such as splashid.
Useability: The iphone is dead simply which is both a strength and a weakness. I've always found it to be a little too easy and the lack of customization was frustrating as well as the lack of multitasking. I've always found the multitasking issue rather humorous since so much of the tech industry used to point this out as a weakness in the palm os and now the iphone has the same weakness years later and it's not an issue for the writers...go figure. The N1 is not quite as simple as the iphone and you'll probably spend a little more time getting used to it and setup the way you want, but you'll end up with a phone that meets your personal needs as opposed to someone else's view of your needs.
Overall I'm finding it to be a top notch phone that I expect will only get better as the OS continues to evolve. Google seems to be on a pretty regular update cycle and it continues to evolve. As the os attracts more users the applications will continue to grow as well.
One final word. I wouldn't equate the winmo htc experience with what you'll have with an android htc device. Winmo definitely contributes to issues with some of the htc phones. This device is in a whole different league.
here is few questions if you guys could answer it would be really helpful
does it freeze or have problems when running multiple apps?
do the apps have nice interface and are thy smooth?
does it lag alot?
and i herd mutitouch is coming to the google phone does anyone know when?
does it freeze or have problems when running multiple apps? - Nope for me its been pretty smooth, no stuttering at all, Apps open very quickly.
do the apps have nice interface and are thy smooth? - yes most do, there are one or two that do not scale well to the larger screen, these will be fixed with updates, just waiting on the devs to resolve.
does it lag alot? - no lag for me what so ever.
and i herd mutitouch is coming to the google phone does anyone know when?
- no one knows, its been demo'd on the European version of the Nexus One. However you can have multitouch browsing using either a custom ROM (soon to be released) or the Dolphin Browser (free download from the market place).
I know exactly what you're going through with your WinMo and HTC. I had multiple problems with the two just barely working at all. Android is so different but so much easier to find things in. I've played with iPhones and yeah they're fun for a bit but I have a friend with one that has had it for a couple months and is already starting to get bored with it. He says he's jealous of my Android and how much more I can do with it. It always looks different each time he looks at it.
I can tell youre trying to compare the Nexus One to your diamond because Ive used that phone and know what youre talking about with the lag and freezing and theres simply no comparison between the N1 and diamond, if you do get it you will be simply amazed.
I own a nexus, g1, iPhone 2g, and a touch pro 2. I can easily say in terms of speed, battery life, and overall enjoyment, the nexus is easily king. The keyboard is on par with the iPhone as far as usibility, which I could never say about the g1's onscreen. You can still sync your iTunes library with the correct software, it's the best mobile web browsing experiance I've had to date.
Simply put, nexus one ftw!
i think il wait to see how the muti touch on the nexus one turns out. thanks for all ur help!!!
bigger screen, higher resolution, brighter, prettier, easier to unlock and root... none of this cat and mouse crap with apple and the dev team...
I'm sure there are other things to compare..
oh yeah!!! the N! has bluetooth stereo stream and the iphone doesnt...
but, apple is gonna announce a new iphone this feb... so... up to you if you want to wait or not.
The N1 has a 1 Ghz proc, vs iPhone's 600 Mhz,
an 800x480 screen vs iphone's 480x320 (There are as many pixels shoved in the short side of the N1's screen as there are on the entire tall side of the iphone's screen, it's been widely cited as the best looking screen right now, with bright whites and colors and blacks like velvet. It can play full 720p HD video in this resolution.),
512 mb RAM vs. the iPhone's 256 mb, though of course you probably don't need it on the iPhone as you can't even run more than one app at a time (clearly, the iPhone is not a computer)
However, the nexus one doesn't have as many apps. The apps it does have are incredible, though, and you can emulate SNES, download torrents, Remote-desktop to your PC from anywhere with 3G/wifi, run a wireless tether without much trouble. Generally, the kind of stuff Apple would never let you get away with. While Apple has some cooler games, their utilities simply don't stack up.
I know EAXCTLY what you're talking about in terms of HTC and WinMo. I just upgraded from the HTC Touch to the Nexus One. There simply is no comparison, Android is an entirely different animal than WinMo.
As for iPhone vs the N1, the N1 beats it by far in terms of raw specs. In terms of OS vs OS the difference is that with the iPhone you're forced to play in Apple's little sandbox. Highly regulated app store, no "real" customization to speak of. This has the benefit of being an extremely stable and polished OS but if you're used to making things "your own" like I am, it's just not fun.
This is the first Android phone I've had, been using it for almost a week now and I will never look back. I LOVE it. Some of the apps aren't quite as good as they are on the iPhone in no small part due to the nature of Android itself. Developers have to worry about supporting multiple phone specifications and networks. It's very comparable to the Mac vs PC argument. PCs require a bit more maintenance and attention while giving you TONS of options while Macs give you stability and TONS of polish with a bit more limited options.
*Edit*
You mentioned multi-touch, the phone fully supports it at the hardware level. The only "problem" is that it's not supported natively in Google's own apps (everyone assumes this has to do with some legal concern of Google's). Developers can use the API in their apps to fully take advantage of this support and many already do. I use the Dolphin Browser over the one that comes pre-loaded and the multi-touch in it is FANTASTIC. Best part is that unlike the iPhone it auto re-scales things for you to keep them readable.
I hoping to get multi touch as soon as N1 Euro out via custom roms.
Nexus could be superior all around if our apps would mature a bit more. Yes we're growing in apps, but they lack polish. You can look at many of our apps and go "Yeah thats clearly made by an engineer". They work great, but one reason the IPhone sells is because it is pure sexy in just about all forms.
The iPhone and the Nexus One are two different beasts, multi touch is something you dont use that often as you think when you are on the iPhone. When I had the iPhone(1st gen) multi touch was on, the kb, the browser, the photo viewer, and later on gimmicky apps that just came out.
I think of the iPhone more like a PS3 whereas android phones are more like a computer
iphone or android?
its how tech savy you are, ad how much you want to learn ot use something.
the iphone is simple. you hit a button, it responds instantely and it does exactly what it said it was going to do.
andriod is more advanced. alot more ways to customize it but it comes with a learning curve. this curve isnt as bad as the winmo one but it does exsist.
so it comes down to power vs simplicity. id go for power

I LOVE my HD2 (I know, for a change eh!?)

Well seem as there are endless threads with people moaning how much they dislike the HD2 I thought it was time to have one for people that are actually happy with it, because in fairness it’s by far the best phone I’ve ever purchased.
I’ve owned an iPhone and yes there are things that I miss like the great 3D games and apps in the App store, an integrated music store and most of all the genius playlist feature in the music player. All this is just software features though, and by the sounds of it WM7 will integrate them.
You think how much revenue Apple make through the iTunes music and App store you really think Microsoft are going to miss out on that opportunity? (Well okay there is the Marketplace but let’s face it, it was slapped together in 5 mins and that’s how it looks!)
Rumours of Zune integration have been mentioned several times and what a perfect way to introduce Zune into the European market. (You noticed how it’s been integrated on the Xbox in the past few months...)
Just a bit if patience is all that’s required. Have a feeling WM7 will cover all Windows Mobiles short comings.
However enough of what missing – now the good bit - the hardware kicks ass!
The screens amazing (My iPhone screen looks so tiny and low res when I use it now) and I love how responsive it is... everything’s instant and smooth. The phone looks amazing, love the brushed metal back and that slightly rubbery feeling black plastic, it feels expensive and looks great.
SenseUI is a joy to use. The weather background is a really nice touch and actually useful. More so I love how it uses the GPS and always knows where you are! Music player is good, love the cover flow art (yes they blatantly nicked that idea but least it looks great and works just as well)...
Internet is by far the best on a mobile. The large screen really shines through; it’s not far off a desktop experience and very useable.
Mine also came with CoPilot installed which I purchased (£27 with European map – bargain!) which works brilliantly... as good as a proper sat nav.
Lots of little things finish it off, the screen doesn’t just come on, it smoothly brightens... if someone calls me who isn’t in my phone book it asks me after if I’d like to save that number for future use... the ringer quietens when I pick the phone up... the list goes on...
I’ve had it 3 months and still love it as much as day one.
Okay it has frozen up on me a few times (It runs Windows, I mean come on a version of Windows that didn’t crash? Well that wouldn’t be right would it?) Since the firmware upgrade it’s actually been very stable (so far). Do still get the odd freeze when sliding to unlock which can be annoying. Nothings perfect and it can all be solved with software updates. (Oh and the battery lasts one day, I know, but some of us sleep at night and therefore find time to charge it!)
Anyway that was an essay but thought it was time that maybe we focused on all the great things for a change. Makes you wonder if people dislike it so much they don’t just exchange it? Most networks give you 14 days to swap (Well Vodafone did, I'm sure others do). Its funny how iPhones short comings always seem to get ignored isn’t it? It was launched in 2007 and software wise it was groundbreaking but its 2010 and little has changed... the HD2 makes it look, well... very 2000 and late
Glad to hear this against the backdrop of all the whining and distraught posts
"HTC SCREWED US!" lol.
+1, like this love my hd2 too
+1 love my HD2 really sweet and getting better by the day.
+1 love my HD2
I actually love my wife...
but HD2, I like quite well, too.
Lol... my girl friend has been complaining about me ignoring her and spend most of my free time on my HD2. (she asked me to hug the HD2 to bed! ) but that had changed though..
Love my girl friend first.
then the HD2..
+1 me too, absolutely love this beautiful beast of a phone, especially with the new 1.66 rom its amazing!
Agree
Agree with everything you say, i"ve had many mobiles and PDAs over the years including the iPhone 3Gs but nothing comes close to the HD2 at the moment, Fantastic Screen, Powerful Processor and very Fast and Responsive. Has everything i need. but more Apps will be great.
I had an HTC Diamond before I got my HD2. Its such a big step up.
Loving the GPS Never owned a GPS device before, and it sure is handy.
I love GOD, my wife, my family and I love my HD2!!!! Its "Fantabulous"... the best thing since sliced bread. )
I have to agree with all of the above.
I am somehow new to the smartphone mobile world ... had owned a N73 (nokia was my first love), an HTC Diamond (beautiful phone, also very customizable) continued with an Iphone 3g (very good for a while by my history with the Diamond made me miss it's overall liberty of choice and flexibility. The HD2 brought together all the things I loved about the previous phones; N73 camera (good camera for it's time, same with the hd now), Iphone's capacitive screen (we must admit, they started it) and the Diamond's screen quality, high resolution suitable for the screen size, the customization level (i must thanks MS and XDA).. and more, great hardware (with nice surprises, see the RAM discoveries).
Conclusion: I love this phone with all of its occasional lock-downs
+1.....Fantastic phone and more....Sure there's bugs.....but since the introduction there already have been some new Official ROM updates from HTC, so I guess that they are indeed listening to the people roaming around this place, and I'm sure that more Official ROM Updates will follow the next couple of months, which make it possible for the wonderfull cooks at XDA to perform their magic
I for one, will not be changing to another Mobile device for a long time !!!
I loved it with 148 and love it even more with 166, smooooth
I love my HD2 also.
Before I had a Qtec 2020i with 2003SE. Now the HD2
WinMobile is good and give you still some freedom. Freedom is something that you cant find by Apple. What I like most is the sync with a pc. The agenda and contacts works fine.
Together with a program Pocket Controller Pro, I can remotely type sms and other stuff. It is true that in some cases you need to search for a solution and it is not simple for some of us. But finding the solution give you even a greater satisfaction. The HD2 is not cheap but you get a lot for your money.
I agree too, Best phone i have ever had, definatly gets better every day, customised perfect for my needs, Excellent !
Can I just add to this:
I love God, my wife, my cat and the HD2.
In terms of instant gratification, however, I prefer the HD2. Mind you, the cat comes close.
rjstep3
Upgraded from an LG Secret myself, hell of an upgrade.
+ 1 Happy HD2 owner

...a bit harsh on the wife Sir, I shall pray for your soul.

Lets face it: HD2 (and XDA!) is f*in amazing!

I've noticed a couple times scrolling through the forums that an outsider interested in buying the phone might be turned away if they read through here. Of course, odds are they wouldn't come to XDA in the first place, but still the complaints - though in the minority - are most obvious.
Tired of all the hater threads? Love your HD2 as much as I do? Enjoy the looks of envy from 3GS users? This is our thread
Besides, the best unexpected side benefit of the HD2: plentiful opportunities for "that's what she said."
Wow... the counter part entitled "Lets face it: HD2 (and XDA!) is f*in amazing!". Things are getting interesting.
The best thing I love about HD2 is screen, CPU, WiFi router and Remote Desktop Mobile (my personal favourite). Perhaps a couple of other "diamonds sparkling behind the rock". You need to dig to get the diamonds....lol...
I received envy, but not necessarily quite the type I thought...!
I was at the shops waiting for my GF, playing with my HD2. A little boy probably around 10yo was with his mum sitting next to me spotted me playing games.
Boy: "Look there mum!! See!! EVERYONE has an iPhone!!"
Surprisingly, I was actually slightly offended that someone would mistake the HD2 as an Apple product...but he was only a kid so I kept quiet and just continued playing...hehe.
Love it all, screen crisp and clear, fast fast fast processor and navigates really easily and well, surprising ease of use input methods, that fact that while its big it doesnt feel too big when using it as a phone, how clear and loud the speakers are, plays movies really well and so much better than I expected, really easy to use and individualise... so much more that I'm afraid if I keep typing it will look like I am gushing...
I sold My iPhone 3gs to buy this.................. best thing I have done

oh yeah... it's a decent phone too...
im lovin my hd2 tbh. my last phone was an omnia and over at modaco there is a great rom scene, i havent even tried a custom rom on the hd2 yet, so i havent scratched the surface on what this amazin piece of kit can offer! the best thing about wm is defo the customization.
the screen on this device is something else, web browsing is amazing (im writin this on hd2 now).
xda is brilliant, this forum is so active, lots going on!!

Finally a thread that makes sense
I love the screen, the wifi speed, the speed in the menus, the video playback (streaming with coreplayer of course), the pinch to zoom, the hardware, sense 2.5, the screen resolution and again that screen... so beautiful
moved from xperia x1, the processor is twice fast and so the screen!
still at stock Rom until my spare battery arrive best phone in winmo era!
buy another iptouch if you want to play fancy game, affordable compared to awesome HD2
At work yesterday I showed a mate who has an iPhone, side by side the HD2 just looks SOOOO much nicer
Htc hd2 ftw
I hope i'll be able to write a line or two in this thread next week
I love the HD2, the wonderful screen estate, the speed and all the wonderful mods. XDA-developers is the one reason I stayed with HTC phones and not gone for others. All the help and wonderful tweaks and modifications just make the phone unique to us and we feel so free to do as we like without being restricted.
Best time was when a iPhone 3gs owner got envious of my HD2 XD
And as many o got offended when some ppl have misstaken it for a iPhone >.<
HD2 looks way better than a iPhone, faster too ^^.
Just a quick one from a very loyal windows phone user who went to iPhone 3GS and then played with a HD2...
There are MANY reasons to go back to windows/HTC and given that I have been using the 3GS for around 6 months now, it's quite a big thing to say.
There are also many reasons to stay with the iPhone.
To be honest, the functionality and hardware...the HD2 wins hands down and not a single person can say otherwise.
Software-wise - I have to admit, the same BUT, when I went back to the iPhone, I couldnt help noticing the simplicity of it all which sometimes made it a bit better to use.
There were also a few niggles that the iPhone seemed to not have
Other: The appstore.
This is where the iPhone won over the market place.
The apps are cheap, there are plenty of them around and some of the very few games that I always have to have on a phone (need for speed/asphalt) were a lot better on the iPhone.
Why am I going back to the iPhone?
Only one reason after all that testing... logmein!
I heavily use logmein for home/work and this is something that is too flakey on the HD2.
iPhone has an app, its all done via the app. Related to this, the web side of things work very well on the iphone where zooming in still fits the page to the screen.
Niggles:
Main one is that the Audi and the HD2 don't like each other in that the contacts are only syncing up to the letter N
Second was emails i found easier on the iphone (don't shout!)
I love the idea of how it displays on the HD2 but hate the idea that to delete, I have to go into another screen or whatever. This is going back to Simplicity that you have 4 icons, one to reply, one to delete, and whatever the others do ON the email in question. Same goes for multiselect...going to a menu, select, select several is 3 screens to many and the iPhone slide>delete individually is still "simpler"
having said all of this, if I had never touched the iPhone, I would not have realised any of the above and gone for the HD2
But the way I work is to take the HD2, not use the 3GS, and see if I need to use the 3GS for anything...if not, the HD2 is a winner.
And in this case, it did win had it not been for the bluetooth and logmein.
End of the day, it's all personal preference and I know for a fact I'll go back to HTC/WinMo once I get what I want on it
Right now, I just dont know what to do and still have both devices in my pocket

Why Did You Chose the HD2?

I got my HD2 about 6 months ago and love it. There are many small reasons why I chose it over others:
1. I use Hotmail, MSN Messenger, Media Player, etc so Windows Mobile would suit me without having to open any new accounts.
2. The hardware. It was (and still is) one of the most powerful phones in terms of hardware.
3. Physical Buttons. I tried using my Dad's Touch HD and got really annoyed when using the 4 buttons on the bottom because there was no instant feedback as to whether it had recognised that you'd pressed it. There was a slight vibration but it's not the same as the 'click' of an actual button. Also, if the phone is on a go slow then the vibrate confirmation wouldn't kick in for a few seconds meaning that you'd think it didn't register, and then pressing it multiple times.
4. Big screen. I would have loved a physical keyboard, but I realise that to have one, it would mean extra bulk. I liked the bigger screen because it means that the keys on the keyboard aren't too small. The keyboard on my ipod touch can feel fiddly sometimes and feels a bit small for everyday use.
5. This site. I don't know how well WinMo would do without all of the XDA Devs but they really do add a lot more functionality. My hat goes off to all of you!
I would add Android as well to the list but it was only a pipe dream when I first got my phone and wasn't a deciding factor.
I was just wondering what the reason you all had for choosing the HD2 over other phones? It'll be interesting to see what you all have to say
Mostly due to the fact that is probably the last GREAT WinMo phone before WP7 comes on the scene and kills off the most customisable mobile OS left.
It's a phone, it's a music player, it's a satnav, it's cheaper and it has a better screen than an iphone.
Mostly due to the big screen and the hardware of it, I wasn't too bothered atleast about the apps since I already have an ipod touch so I normally carry that around so I get the best of both worlds especially cause I can share the itnernet from my phone to my ipod.
But mostly it was the big screen, really makes surfing the web the easiest of all phones I find
..
i was between Desire and HD2. I like android more, but crappy touchscreen(as seen on google) made me turn to hd2.
not sorry for one moment about that choice
1. I'm comfortable with WinMo
2. My work has an app that needs WinMo. In recent months I found that I won't be needing to run that app, however.
3. It's customizable. iPhone still seems like a smartphone for dummies.
4. I guess this is part of #3, I want to have my information in front of me, now and on a big screen. On one customized screen, I know the weather, time, email count, messages, and most importantly, upcoming events. With iPhone, I'd have to go into apps looking for the information. It's what-to-do (WinMo) vs what-can-I-do (iPhone).
5. Form factor. At first I thought the screen might be too big. Now I won't get a phone with anything smaller. It's thin too. When I first got it, I felt like I was holding a picture frame to my head.
6. At the time it wasn't a factor, but dual boot to Android is fantastic. I'm actually running Android all the time. There's not much missing from mattc froyo build.
I had faith that the guys from xda would force android on to the hd2. The a number one reason why no other phone matters is cause of the screen size. atleast on t-mobile.
soon as i saw the wiper on the weather i had to have one, lol, hated it for a fair while.....after getting brave, cant stop playing with it, now love it!!!
The flashlight...
The big screen and the hardware. I also took a calculated risk that it would be updated to 7 series. DOH!
RReckless
I bought it because....
.....actually i owned an iphone 3gs for 2 days but then it got stuck and couldnt turn on..
So i sended it back to apple store and i was waiting till they fix it, but it took them so long so i bought the leo while waiting for the iphone 2 b repaird...
i remember it was monday when i bought my leo, and as soon i had the box in my hands they called back from apple store and said - sorry we cant repair your iphone so you get a NEW one
But then i kept my leo and sold the iphone, and i havent regret at all!!!!
i HATE iphones (anything with that stupid piece of fruit on it actually!) and this is pretty much as opposite to an iphone as it gets; its ot a good screen, a good camera with a flash, it can be tweaked/hacked/modified and its using fast, new hardware. i had a nokia n95 before this, and the screen was huge in comparison-and so thin! ive dipped in and out of windows mobile so had some expeience with it. i used pocket pc 2002, windows mobile 5 (t-mobile mda vario 3) which is when i first used xda to get wm6 onto it. since then i couldnt find a pda that did everything i wanted. now my hd2 has replaced my camera, my mp3 player, my usb flash drive, and is now my main device for news/weather and social networking. the big screen makes things so easy, and despite the heavily biased reviews that all seem to say something along the lines of 'well its not an iphone so its rubbish', im very very happy with it. only thing i sacrificed was battery life, as my n95 could probably go a day on heavy use, whereas the hd2 will be dead early evening time. ive also developed paranoia about scratching/cracking the lovely big screen on it
i was gonna get a desire but (imho) its butt ugly i really liked the look of the hd2 but wasnt too sure about winmo however when i saw the development going on in the forums i decided to get a hd2 and havent looked back
In the Poll I chose 'Other' because ALL of the other options applied to me....
Why I chose the HD2....
1. 1Ghz CPU
I remember the first widely available 1Ghz DESKTOP Processors. I remember being in awe of the GIGAHERTZ trophy everyone wanted. I remember being amazed at the fact that a home computer could have a ~1000Mhz CPU.
I remember a similar feeling when I heard about the HD2
2. My last phone was a Touch Pro2 and in the short time I had it I actually grew to love Windows mobile Probably because it was my first ever smartphone (previously a samsung jet owner).
I decided the TP2s successor should have WinMo too! .
The HD2 was the obvious choice.
The thought of having a free upgrade to Windows phone7 swung the decission even further in the hd2s favour.
3. THE SCREEN = BIG. Not amoled like the jet etc. but BIG, with good resolution, decent coulours and brightness.
4. After dabbling with android on the TP2 very briefly, I did some research and found that Android on the HD2 was probably coming withing 6 months. Case closed.... this was the deciding factor for me (coupled with the fact that I liked winmo too).
5. ANDROID! (mentioned above, but its worth mentioning twice )
Signed,
One very happy HD2 Dual-booter
I bought my HD2 about a month ago now. I bought it because of the hardware inside it. I kinda enjoy the fact that its almost as powerful as my wifes laptop!
Having been a fan of HTC for many many years, its nice to know that my phone is 4 times better than the Iphones and cost me half as much!
Ive been using wm6.5 ozrom with no problems (except not being able to connect to the internet sometimes, i believe this is more the chinese network rather than the phone!)
Pleased as punch with it and kudos to HTC showing yet again, that they rock!
I bought it because of the screen & processor(and because thanks to Radio Shack's kickass trade-in program, I was able to get it for EIGHT DOLLARS!), but the biggest reason was because the HD2 is probably the last great, REAL WinMo phone we'll see before Win7(AKA Buzz Killington) comes out & ends an era. The death of WM is gonna be a really hard pill to swallow, nigh on impossible actually, but having the last real WM phone might soften the blow a bit.
I really hope that communities like this one keep WM alive for as long as possible.
Viva LA WM!!!
WM will never die!!!!
The manufacturers may stop making devices but the community will never die!!!
Long live WM!!
just 3reason. i choose hd2 because of fast gps reciver phone, support garmin software and big screen.
I moved to Leo because my Rhodium was too slow and I took the hardest desicion of leaving real keyboard device for Leo, I am very satisfied with the performance and now more fun having Android too!
But still miss a real keyboard...
Well said!!!:
