Google Maps Update 3.4.0 Force Closes - False Alarm! Fixed - Touch CDMA General

So I updated my Google Maps to version 3.4.0. Now everytime I try to open Maps, it force closes instantly.
Has anyone else updated and have this problem / not have this problem?

Trudging to my doom as I speak...

Just installed 3.4 and it works for me.
I'm running msmissions 2.1.0 build with dzo's 2/04/10 nbh file.

I'm not sure if this is related but GPS Status tool goes to a black screen when I launch it now.

Works fine for me, though I'm getting some odd functionality in Myn's build that I'm using.

Updated as well from Myn's latest build on NAND and got a F/C as well. Earlier version worked fine on the same ROM, so it's certainly the upgrade.

Two different results from Myn's ROM and I'm using Plemen's ROM so I really don't think it's build specific.
Also of note: I read a review just before I updated of someone saying "Does not work, package certificate not signed". I'm going to assume it was a branded Android device, our numbers aren't that huge yet (I would guess)..........soo it would seem that hopefully it's not due to our custom Android config.
My sadistic OCD drive to update forced me to do it despite my better judgement of the review I noticed. OOPS just realized all of our builds don't include Google Maps because of issues with Nav. No maps until Google fixes it now ... ruh roh!

Try turning off GPS in your phone settings.
The first time I updated, I started it and got a phone reboot.
Then I turned GPS off, loaded up Maps, and it loaded fine. Turned GPS on, tried GPS Test, worked fine.
Then I loaded up Maps w/ GPS, worked fine, got a position. So then I figured maybe it's something with GPS initialization. I rebooted my phone and tried again. Maps loaded, but now GPS won't initialize in either GPS Test or Maps. Maps does load.
I think either:
1. Either the new Maps doesn't like something with the way our GPS initializes (seems unlikely as other builds work)
2. Myn has something messed up in his build.
2 is far more likely. Something seems to be hosed in Myn's build. Right now when I boot up my phone, GPS turns on with no applications running.....
GPS works, it just never turns off.

Here's the changelog for 3.4.0..
Starred items synchronized with maps.google.com - access your favorite places from your phone or computer
Search suggestions from your personal maps.google.com history - makes it easy to search for places you've searched for before
Night mode in Google Maps Navigation - automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving
Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone's Browser, Gallery and Maps applications
Something that confuses me is at every website they describe Google Maps as updating the phone with multitouch... I hope this doesn't cause issues for those of us still with resistive screens (Vogue)

I'm sure they put a check somewhere to indicate if the phone supports multi-touch. Not all do.

I am at work and can't confirm but I believe this is not build specific.
According to berardi's post, He is running Plenum's build and is also having the same issue .
Anyone got a logcat of the force close?
Code:
adb logcat

i would also think that because the tattoo is 1.6(supports navigation) and has a resistive QVGA screen.

Hrm.
I am having issues with the Market today.
I tried two separate test accounts in between system wipes and I can't download a thing.
Anyone else having similar issues?
Edit: Apparently I am not alone:

Yes..... says starting download and then it never starts! Ahhhh whack a mole for devs lol

With the Market now back I downloaded the new Google maps on both the SQSH and NoMoRootFS version of Warm Donut and both worked flawlessly.
No force closes, no loss of GPS signal.
For reference these were both fresh systems with no Google maps loaded previously. [email protected] Warm Donut rls 2.
Perhaps (I am guessing) the market outage had something todo with this? Perhaps there are google web services hosted on the Market servers that the Maps application interacts with?
Try your maps again. If it does fail, uninstall and redownload.

Market back up for me too... redownloaded, even tried jnadke's method of turning off gps, opening up, but still nothing just a force close. I guess I will try reinstalling again tomorrow. Not sure what else to try but I need my maps!

I was able to update Maps, no problem!
You won't believe this, but it worked for me. I am running Myn's Warm Donut, the original release. I am booting from Haret, on ext2 partitions. (Fat32, ext2, ext2) I read all the posts, and decided to update Google Maps anyway. I figured if it didn't work, I was going to upgrade to Myn's Donut release 2. And, it works on the original release. Also, I was able to download The Weather Channel from the Market just before I did the update. I am running at 320 x 480, lcd=160. I wonder if the problem might have anything to do with the new NoMoRootfs builds? I did have my gps turned on when I downloaded the update. After installing, I clicked on "My Location," and it zoomed right in to my actual location, accurate to 4 meters. Sometime this weekend, I'm planning on sorting through my microSDs, backing them up and formatting a couple of them. Then I'll load Myn's release 2 on one and one of the other builds on a different card. I might even get brave enough to unlock my Touch and do a NAND install. (I wish I could do that from LINUX or totally from my SD card...) I'll let you know what happens with the Market.

Ok this is really weird, I installed Myn's build, ran Google Maps and it worked fine, then I played with another build. Google Maps didn't work. I then reinstalled Myn's build and once again it doesn't work...

copilot code cannot be loaded by the system (???)

Hi,
I have a strange problem I was using copilot and it was working good. After upgrading to 1.6 firmware I decided to format android and clean it from some apps.
I installed again copilot and it went well, but when I load it it says
"copilot code cannot be loaded by the system" and it doesn't load anymore.
It is very strange to me.
Any idea?

1.6 broke Copilot. You'll have to wait for copilot to come up with a fix for it.
Yeah same happened to me, 1.6 broke it :-(
Works fine here....
Are you using the latest version of copilot?
Legit version that you bought from market?
copilot works here on cyanogens latest. or at least, it's a laggy, slow, almost-as-good-as-a-standalone-gps app. i aquired mine from alternative sources, and realized it wasn't anywhere near a regular standalone gps unit. since then i've dumped it. nice interface and all, but just too much lag.
google maps is decent enough for me on the road. i mean, i can make a block if i miss a turn or whatever.
Laggy? You just gotta wait a minute after it starts up in order for the system to stabilize. Copilot is *big*, so the CPU goes nuts on initial startup when other processes get blown out of memory and such.
As for standalone GPS's.... well, my GF's tomtom wanted to send us on a retarded route, so I started up copilot and it took a beeline straight to the objective. If you ask me, its WAY WAY better.
And google maps for navigation? About as horrible as it gets. Miss a turn and you're screwed. Copilot reroutes automatically as needed. Copilot also reroutes around bad stuff (like traffic jams). Learn how to use it and its great.

Nope I have CoPilot_v8.0.0.327-kfc2.0 version.

anyone got a fix for this ? One of the main reasons I went for the HERO is to have a GPS SatVan unit with it... Can anyone suggest a good free alternative ? I find the font in Google Maps too small to make it a vaible option.

The latest version of copilot works fine with all versions of android up to and including 2.1.
I am a paid customer of copilot. for that reason i can say these things. their customer support sucks.
i purchased copilot while using a CM rom in sept 09. everytime i updated my version, i would have to re-download from the market. no biggie. same thing with docs to go, my backup, and other paid apps. i understand their concerns of pirated software. well, one day i decided to try some of the other roms as well as try danger spl, etc. i installed dwang. not a bad rom. i tried to re-download my copilot app... and my troubles began.
it would fail on download each time. never even loading 1% of the app. went back to cyan. still no good. i then went through each and every version released since sept. 09 to see if that would help. nope. i even unrooted my phone! still no good. during this time i searched every FAQ on copilots mother company's site. the one relevant answer i found was that you are supposed to unregister your software before moving to another phone. i guess the other rom registered with their system as another phone. well after a complete wipe, reformatting my sdcard, new rom, etc., i couldnot unregister the program. i tried for a month solid trading respectfull comments with their support guy. respectfull until he treated me like an idiot and made a few snide remarks. anyway... i finally accepted the fact that they were in no way going to give me a copy of the apk. so, i tried a copy from a site i found. i followed the instructions they had on the site, except were they said use some pirate license, etc., i used my authentic information. a short time later, i had my program back.
so, the moral of this story is this: if your legit and need support, you will get half @$$ed support from them. if you are legit, follow the instructions provided on some of the pirate sites WITH YOUR AUTHENTIC INFORMATION and you can get your stuff back up and running. had the jerk support guy just sent me the apk after confirming that i was a paid customer, and told me how to install it, i would have had mine up and running a month earlier.
i have had better support with 1 and 2 dollar app developers than these guys. pathetic.
oh, a big kicker. i sent the guy screenshots of me trying to download the software. he had the audacity to tell me my problems were caused by me using a non oem rom and that google doesnt allow that. what a putz. after i informed him of the fact i had been on the same non oem rom when i purchased the app, the theory of open source, and the fact that my rom was developed with the same sdk that they used to develop their program, and that google fully supports developers, he never responded to me. i then informed him of the fact that i reactivated my legit program using pirates instructions.
no wonder why their ranking in the market place is going down drasticly.

i know this story time and time again, these companies/music/film/tomtom paid for it never worked. industry etc etc create these these situations then try and use screwy laws to persecute people. its not new and it is a reflection of how weak we are as a society. imo

Blah blah blah.... copilot works fine and this is NOT a copilot/alk support issue that you are talking about... it is an ANDROID MARKET issue.
Changing the ROM does NOT require you to unregister the program. It registers against your phone's IMEI, which is constant REGARDLESS of SPL/Radio/ROM/whatever.
There was one version that had some registration problems back a couple of versions, I think they revamped the registration procedure and broke it -- it was replaced fairly quickly. The latest one works again and is actually fully compatible with 2.2.
And FYI: Asking them nicely *does* yield a copy of certain older versions. They don't keep around copies of every version known -- just the "major stable" versions, like 606.

Google Maps Navigation

Starting two updates ago when I use maps it works great but if I choose navigate it works (I get everything except the map it self is black)
I am running Fresh2.0d
any ideas?
I had the same problem awhile back and I ended up having to do a wipe/reflash. Works great now.
I have the same problem, two or three updates ago everything was fine, now in nav it is just a black screen and it often crashes.

exactly the same with me
Had the same issue, tried everything, then I flashed, damage 2.8.1 and it works again

This is caused by the workaround done to our OpenGL to get the LWP working. The workaround breaks google street view so the navigation will not work correctly. Fresh put up an "undo" file that you can flash to revert back to the stock Hero OpenGL here: http://link.geekfor.me/openglundo . Unfortunately that "undo" will make it so that most LWP don't work, so you have to choose whether you want to be able to use LWP or google navigation.

Does the Zillow app in marketplace work for your HD2?

I get an error right after the splash screen. The details report some kind of GPS script error.? Any ideas? I'm using the TMous stock rom and also the newest Bing.. Thanks
It's working on my tmous hd2. There's no exit or quit, so you have to force close the app.

I've tried a bunch of times...? which version of bing do you have? Or does it use googlemaps? It crashes right away after the splash for me with a page of GPS script errors??? HMM...
LOL, now this will drive me crazy.... don't really need the app, but it's annoying when I can't get something to work right..lol thanks
It says Bing maps on the about info. I don't think it uses the Bing apps though. I'm using Bing 5.1.2010.
It kind of works...it cant track my location via gps constantly, it will do it one time and put a nice blue dot on map, then when I move and ask it to find me, it'll center map on my location, but won't show blue button. It is also buggy and I've had time where buttons don't respond, it has frozen my phone other times, and I"ve had to home button, task manager close it at other times. Anyone got a constant gps fix when you use it?
Edit *Also had a ton of GPS errors, can't find your location, etc*
Works fine for me.
Man this is weird, it works on my son's HD2 also and our phone's are almost identical? I even tried uninstalling w/sktools to make sure the registry was clean. Oh well. I'll probably flash a new rom this weekend anyhow, this is the longest I've ever ran a stock rom anyways..

Google Earth: 2.1 ROMS (Syndicate/Epic Experience/Baked Snack, etc)

Hi,
I'm at the end of my patience here. I've had all 3 of these roms installed, and they all work great, except that google earth NEVER shows up in the market. I found a google_earth.apk, and Installed it from ES File Manager, and it works except when I try to clear the cache, or change any of the layers. And on the first attempt it crashes but 2nd or more, it will work if no settings are changed. I've already tried to fix permissions in clockwork but to no avail. Any suggestions?
From what I've read by searching Google, I think Google actually removed this from the market for some reason.
EDIT: Either that or they've changed it to 2.2 and above only. Haven't used 2.2 yet so I'm not sure if its there or not.
well then I guess I should be happy with what works??? lol! But if anyone wants the file, here it is. See what you can do with it.

I'm on the 2.2 Beta and its in the market for me. so if you really can't locate it in the market then i would assume you are right in that its only for froyo now. in which case you can probably install an earlier version of google earth and run it without any problems. i'lll see if i can find one in one of my old backups somewhere if you would like.
I would really appreciate that!

I doubt that would work, since you have to connect to google servers to run the program and they force you to use the most current version.
Worst case scenario you will get it when the official 2.2 is out, won't be long.
randomly now it works without any problems. strange.
Probably put it 2.2 only for the size. I still have ir installed on 2.1 and it works fine, I can pull the apk later and pay it If anyone wants it.

Sygic maps 10

Hey folks,
I've been trying to install Sygic Mobile 10 with India Maps on it, even after following all the steps properly, I still am not able to get the app running on my phone. Please help me!
Although you can select wildfire on the sygic website( which says that it is very much compatible on wildfire handset) ; whenever i run that application it exits without showing any error.
running 2.2.1 froyo

Dont double post; edit the first post if you want to correct something or be patient till someone who feels capable of replying your question replies..
i had the same problem with some versions, others worked better. but i should point out they were all "flower powered"
i think the one that woked the best for me on stock 2.2.1 was 10.8.16, but even this one crashed when cruising the map. i now have cm7 and 10.8.24, and it works perfect.
i've downloaded sygic 10 8.14 on stock 2.2.1 froyo wildfire. it crashes intermitently while cruising through maps or menu items or state/city listing.
seems like memory handling issues. need find 8.16 version to install along with maps 4.1 ...
does anyone know i can download ?
for CM7 i have to wait till someone come up with HBOOT rooting of 1x solution
the more i use sygic, the more dodgy it seems. the program can be very sensitive about exactly the right version of maps, pois etc. if it doesn't like them, it crashes with no info whatsoever...
If you are using a legal version, mail Sygic.
