Essential things I must do to my HD2 - HD2 General

Apologies for starting this, and I'm sure that after several days of reading through thousands of pages of forum I might find the info.
However, I need the basic very important stuff ASAP so I can get on with life whilst trawling the forum.
My HD2 arrived yesterday morning, and I'm already discovering patches and stuff;
What do I NEED to do asap so that my phone will work nicely while I get used to it? - and then I can hack it to death at my leisure
One thing I haven't found yet, is how to turn on receipts for SMS - I know where the setting was on my old phone but can't find it here.
My last phone was TyTN II (the older one that doesn't tilt, no gps) - I am really really missing my keyboard, but I'll get use to it.

Easy question to answer. Essential reading first off is to find and read the "Hints & Tips" thread on here. Once done also read the "Don't start a new thread" one to give you some good info.
Also you will need to use this tool a lot...http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=+site:http://forum.xda-developers.com&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all when searching the forums.
This should get you started. Remember virtually everything you may think of has almost certainly been mentioned on here so PLEASE search first.
Finally, please don't take this the wrong way, but please read the manual that is on the SD card. You would be amazed how many questions come up on here where the answers are to be found in the manual.
Good luck.

Better Organized Wizard Wiki

I have been working on a new version of the Wizard wiki for most of the day. I think the old one is badly organized and hard to navigate. However, I kept most of the same information. The links at the bottom were on the original wiki also, except they link to forum topics; I think that they are important enough to be turned into their own wiki pages. I don't mind doing this but I want to get some feedback from the community first... Reply and tell me if you think I am wasting my time, if you think I am doing a good job, what should be added/removed, what should be changed, etc. etc.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wizard_New
(If it becomes good enough I hope to make it the main Wizard wiki page...as I said, I find the current one hard to navigate.)
Hi,
as you have propably noticed there's couple discussions going on about the forum and some "experts" leaving it etc..
Good structure is very important for wiki and also for forums. So I think you've done a good job there...especially I like the idea to turn certain stuff to their own pages, links to the forum threads are just too messy.
I just finished transferring "How to determine if you have a G3 or G4 Wizard" and "How to SIM unlock and SuperCID unlock a G3 Wizard" into wiki format. Could (a few) people please proofread and triple-check these for me, I don't want anyone to ruin their device because of a misprint or a confusing sentence.
I would suggest you taking the hermes wiki as template for your structure / organization:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
Well done Lee1733.
I have often thought the wiki was out of date and in need of some tidying up. The search facility on these boards is becoming unusable due to thread hijacking and repated posts. I pity new users who have to wade through pages of threads to find a simple answer. A good tip is to use google to search xda-developers as it does a better job of sorting the wheat from the chaff. Perhaps a link to google this site as well as the default search should be put in the header of each page.
The wiki is the best place for FAQs but it is down to all of us to keep it upto date.
I just finished adding/editing the "How to Change the Wizard's Splash Screens" and "How to 'Cook' an Extended Rom" pages. I basically copied this straight from http://www.molski.biz (and gave him credit at the bottom) so they should be correct. The only changes I made were some minor Wiki formatting changes.

hello

hello everyone,
i recently purchased used att 8525. and i don't know anything about it. i had blackberries before and every single one of my blackberry has been broken. so i switched to window based pda's. And i have lot of questions for you guys
1. since my phone was used. it didn't come with any instruction or install software for my computer.....anyone know where i can find these?
i don't plan on hacking crazy on this phone. but planning on getting some gps software and games. Also maybe some better/enhanced operating system......can someone direct me to a thread or url?
And lastly, i really don't know where to start from as far as learning the phone and etc. Is there any thread where i can learn more about the phone?
thanks whole lot!
-jae
I'm relatively new to the Hermes 8525 board myself.
The first place you should look is at the Hermes Wiki page - lots of general info to get you going - and then detailed as you require, for either minor upgrading - or flashing, upgrading, etc.
Here is the link for the wiki page
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
If your phone did not come with any manuals, etc - you should search for the user manual - it is available all over the net, and available for download in PDF fromat.
Search is your friend - there are lots of very helpful people on these boards, and the majority of them have been where you are. But, you need to search the boards - read the "STICKY" posts at the top of each board.
Another member on this board also directed me towards this site - which answered the majority of my noobie 8525 questions.
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php
Read as much as you can - there is lots of info.
Good luck and welcome

Very Difficult to find useful information

First off- this is a great site with valuable information for all matters HTC. It has been a resource that has helped me get more use out of my HTC products.
I have a Universal, Dash, Athena, Startrec, and Wing.
Lately I have been trying to get some useful information for the Athena and no amount of searching, reading Wiki ing can answer my questions or even help me get a baseline understanding of things with the Athena.
It is quite frustrating- I would want to straightforwardly ask a question in a new thread, but it seems that the more experienced people on this board jump to the conclusion that a question is the result of not searching or not reading. I can tell you that I spend hours a day searching for things on this site and often times find irrelevant search results or endless threads with needle in haystack like answers that only partially answer questions. Is there anyway to organize this space better so that questions can be answered more efficiently?
The wiki is not useful for the most part- it has less info than some threads- links are old or irrelevant and searching is plain useless.
Great site everybody but darn frustrating for finding info- Any one else having this issue?
RT
Probably not...
What info are you after and I'm sure someone will be able to help - then maybe you can update the Wiki yourself if you think it needs it!
I want upgrade the radio, but I am not sure if the phone needs to be CID, its the HTC model w/o front facing camera. If it does need to be CID, not sure how to do it properly. There are tons of posts of people who have bricked their units using methods that would use to CID. So I am sorta scared to try anything- every method I see suggested is followed by another thread of someone for whom the process went badly. Also I cannot get a reliable place to download a radio and which radio is the best or useable with a later rom? I read that some radios don't work with some roms and there threads of people tried to upgrade ROMs but found that they had radio problems, WIFI, bluetooth and GSM issues. Is there a better radio to use than others? Is their a reliable place to get the requisite radio version?
What ROM version makes sense. The current ROM on my Athena is awful- the worst ever. I downloaded AP4 and right before I geared up to use it, I read a ton of posts which say is does not work with WIFI- WTF? Is there a version of it that does work with WIFI? Is there another version of the ROM that is stable and downloadable? Also I have seen mentions of various types of ROMs, but no real explanation of what these ROMs are and where to get them.
Mind you I have done tons of stuff with my universal, dash, wing, MDA and have had an easier time finding info, links and resources.
Anyway- I just cannot seem to find coherent info here. If I do find coherent info, I would more than happy to help out with the WIKI or some sort of wiki that clearly outlines key info such as
1. Here are the various Rom options and what they do
2. Here are the various Radio options and what they do
3. Here is a coherent, un confusing guide to CID that won't brick your machine
4. Here is a link that works and clearly states which software versions are available for download
5.Here are idiot proof instructions on how do to perform key functions of upgrading.
Before everyone flames this remember I have seen the various posts and threads that talk about these things, but they are usually followed by tons of people who have had problems with ROM, Links, Bricks and other issues. In addition a lot of the information is plain confusing.
So if anyone out there has clear links or pointers let me/us know I will volunteer to compile it because right now I am about ready to toss my crippled Athena out the window.

I'm not sure that I understand exactly what you mean, but from my experience with XDA communities, the Athena has a relatively non "newbie friendly" approach. I don't mean to insult anybody of-course, but the switch from the Wizard community to the Athena one was hard, and I feel like people here save too much info for themselves and don't like to share or help new people. I must say, I don't mean to insult anybody or criticize, I'm merely expressing my feelings from my one month around here.
Unlock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315831
Radio - latest 1.57 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=372904
AP4 works fine with Wifi unless you screw up badly - then it CAN be fixed.
Simple, unlock, flash radio 1.57 or leave at 1.5 if you are happy with it, if you have an earlier version it's best to upgrade, then flash AP4.0
I will give it a try
Thank you for all the responses in short time. I have seen these threads and read the aftermath, but I will try them anyway and hope for the best.
Thanks again for the replies.

OK- none of the files I was pointed to seem to work. I get tons of error when I try to open them. Is there a place that provides instructions on getting the process to work properly?

What problems are you having? Can you download AthenaUnlocker.zip (ie click on the
Click here to download! link in the first link) If so, can you unzip it? What errors are you getting?

After about a week reading, I have not been able to find the procedure of flashing the radio of this device. "flashes the same way as the ROM" is as close as I have been to the info. I have a device that shows no radio installed, the olipro tool never advances past 0% and gives an error, after which the phone is stuck in bootloader mode and has to be reflashed with a non radio containing ROM in order to get it to boot again. Radio containing ROM's like Black Touch get stuck at 85%, with the same chore of reflashing a non radio ROM afterwards. I downloaded radio 1:58, but the download only has the actual radio file, no flashing utility. Copying the utility from a ROM file does not work either. Someone else in the same situation has a thread for help. He tried flashing from the SD card, but no dice. His thread is not receiving any useful posts from any of the gurus. The "excellent" video that is pointed out in the olipro unlocker thread is mute, so you have to peel your eyes to see through the low quality picture and still can't read the dialogs shown on screen. Those that ask questions are called idiot or lazy and after reading these posts, the searching for info turns into a graceless process. If the chiefs managing this section of the site care about it being useful, a concise, informative, black and white type sticky thread, read only, closed to responses would be a good idea. Maybe inserting the flashing procedures for unlocking, ROM and Radio flashing into the Athena Wiki would also help. This way newbies and others can come and read the basic procedures without having to filter through the vast amount of threads that only lead to more confusion. I wish I knew more about the procedures, I would beef up that wiki, but I'm afraid I can do more damage than good with my limited knowledge.
completly agree
i have read every page on the advantage x7500,being such an old phone you would thin the genius,s on here could sort it out in seconds, but all they do is insult you.i tried to update from windows 6 on radio 1.20 to michys radio 6.5
it got to 94 percent then crashed, now when i boot up i just get a black and white screen, which then turns white,if it try to reinstall advantage 6.0 the phone reets after 2 or 3 percent..will anyboby help by giving simple term advice to unbrick it? NO.will they provide links to there advice no.THEY JUST INSULT YOU AND SAY ITS IN ONE OF THE THREADS.well im a computer tech and if anybody wants there pc or laptop fixing.guess what i will return the favour with computer speak,THAT YOU CANT UNDERSTAND

just got my new xperia... wat should i do

hey guys, i got a new xperia last night. Now i know there are many tweaks out there... wat are the best or main ones to improve ANYTHING on the phone, please share.
You're new here, so the first thing you should do is READ...and do it lots.
Take things one step at a time - you've just got your new device, so play with it as it is first. Learn it's features and quirks, discover things that bug YOU, then start investigating ways of fixing them.
There's no point spending time fixing things that bug other people, you need to figure out what YOU want.
My own personal conclusion about WM6 devices is generally that if it isn't broke, don't fix it. If you're happy with something then leave it be. Just because others have different expectations doesn't mean you should too.
If I were you I would start reading the wiki

Piece of cake: Read here in the forums, especialy the sticky threads up in the front list, then READ a little more and keep reading
You'll find lots of interesting stuff for the xperia, which ROM is better or which app should I install? well... you will have to read, search and find for yourself the apps/ROMs that fit your requirements and needs
BTW: welcome to the developers forum
If you want to mess around with different programs I would recommend you get some sort of backup program for your contacts, messages and so on. Something like PIM Backup or Spb Backup. Why am I saying this; You are surely gonna f*** up your device a couple of times in the beginning and then would need to hard reset.
Hard reset = Reset to firmware default (Like it was when you bought it if you haven't flashed anything) deleting any configuration settings and installed programs etc.
Soft reset = Rebooting (Like restarting your computer's operating system).
Don't do anything with your phone unless you are sure what you are doing. Read up on anything if you are the smallest bit in doubt!
Try to use the search function in the forum as there is a big possibility someone has asked the same question before.
Good luck.
Welcome to the greatest forum on the internetz . I can only tell you what i did. Hope that helps.
1 - Go to google and type xperia. Find some good forums about it. (seems you already got that one in the bag).
2 - Read some info about your device. What is an ARM processor, what is windows mobile, what kind of games can you play, the resolution of the device +'s and -'s. Start with the small things, before you jump to ROMs, flashing etc.
3 - Read the sticky topics in this forum.
4 - After you have done some reading decide what you want and search the forum for info about programs or games you might like. Almost all the problems you encounter or questions you might have, have been discussed in the past.
5 - Customize your x1 .
6 - And if i may quote maedox - "Don't do anything with your phone unless you are sure what you are doing. Read up on anything if you are the smallest bit in doubt!"
That's what i did. I had to hard reset it a few times but now i got my fair share of experimenting and i have customized it to my tastes. The looks, the games, the programs .

phone says can find image file for new rom whats the problem

everytime i try to install (volume down button + power button) it says "No image found". It really frustrates the living sh*t out of me! i completed everything untill the last step:
* Uncompress the .rar file to get the .image file.
* Rename the .image file to Kovsimg.nbh
* Copy the Kovsimg.nbh file to the top of the SD card.
* Remove the battery for 5 secs (guarantees the phone is turned off).
* Hold down the volume down button, then hold down the power button at the same time.
* After 2-3 secs you'll see the reg/green/blue stripes, then it will go to a light grey background saying "Loading".
after that it says No image found!
someone able to help me?
ive tried the search but i couldnt find anythink useful
Could you just keep all this waffle to one thread, its getting pretty ridiculous seeing yet another OMG I cant figure out which ROM, why ROM, how ROM, what ROM thread from your good self, why not just put all your questions in one thread... please...
I agree.
And please: go to the XPERIA ROM DEVELOPMENT subforum and read the sticky posts since this has been asked (and answered...) before !!
Ah the witty reply of the witless, thank your for your kindly worded message, those gentle words of wisdom surely touched my heart... but if you searched just a little and used some of that towering intellect so evident in your wonderful message you might have found what you seek... the reason no one replies to you or hand feeds you your answer is because with just a little bit of searching (and after being told several times to search) you would have found your answer... well done their chap... take care and good luck with your x1, when you brick it I guess that will be everyone elses fault for not doing your work for you... Watch out Gtrab, vitriol abounds...
You know, normally i wouldn't even respond to this but since you all got the urge to reply to EVERY thread or reply with the same smartass beloni, i've chosen to give my opinion.
You know how difficult it is for a first time WM or smartphone user to learn stuff about it? 90% of this forums users are experienced persons and all expect from others that they too are well experienced with WM/X1. EVEN THE BLOODY TUTORIALS HAVE TUTORIALS, and every thread is connected to 10 other threads about RUU, scripts and other stuff.
Not to mention the hundreds of abbreviations that one has to try and learn BY CHANCE (because somebody in the thread chooses to spell out the whole word instead of the abbreviation, god bless those persons).
So i've been trying to update to the new firmware aswel, but i have the same "no image file!" problem. Have you ever tried to search with the key words "no image file" or something like that? it filters out the word NO so all that remains in the search is image file, and guess what... every thread has atleast 10 matches with "image file".
So i've gone through all of the stickies and a couple of other threads and found some other users with the same problem. Now i face the next problem, 10 people ask about the same question and the answer is never clear.
I've found a couple of answers, and tried all of them but they wouldn't work, and now because of people like you (especially you Gtrab) i'm reticent to ask further questions because you people have the need to keep talking down to others. That's all i wanted to say.
So if you've read all the way up to here, i thank you for listening; you're a good person
Same thing happened with my microsd card. Have you tried a fresh format, with nothing else on the card? I ended up flashing the old fashion way, with RUU.

There's no other way... unless you post your PC brad, USB port specs, installed apps, kind of firewall and antivirus, your ROM, xperia model... oh so many vairable to list... This is TRIAL AND ERROR, there's no "easy way to the rainbow" Dorothy: This ain't no "home cooked biscuits", we're talking 'bout a expenive piece of hardware that can get bricked if you don't learn the appropriate basic knowledge first
Hence, It's IMPOSSIBLE to wite a fail-proof "UNIVERSAL TUTORIAL"
I posted a FULL scientific test about SD cards in the ROM DEVELOPMENT subforum, I had to test a dozen cards with a dozen formatting settings under Win XP and Vista until I finally found the right way to do it, and then I went and POSTED my results and SHARED with the community in the appropriate threads
Nobody told me what to do, I had to read and read and read again and still keep reading
This is mainly in response to Nyans post...
Firstly I dont often post sarcastic or admonishing posts but this chap really takes the cake by posting several threads with the same or similar issues that are very easily found through simple searching...
I do know how difficult it is for a first time user and whats more a relatively technologically illiterate user (thats me)... I have literally spent days searching for the information, trying out what I have found and then re-searching to solve problems or re do something I didnt get right or understand the first time... I am probably in the bottom 2% of the 10% that you claim is the non expert here (although IMHO I would say the percentage of experts is much lower)...
As for the search process it can be a pain, but if you use the google search and use terms like x1 or xperia on the end of what it is you look for it often leads you to the right place...
If all the answers you have found and tried do not work then try pming someone who seems like they know what they are about... I have done that on several occasions and they have all replied with useful and helpful answers usually pointing me in the right direction...
I also feel you are being harsh re your comment about "talking down to people"... too often people jump this board and ask without first reading, even on threads where the answer is a few posts above theirs... so more often than not I feel the odd "RTFM" is warranted... if like me you are technically challenged then my advice is read a bit, then read some more, then play with your phone, read some more and then read again to figure out what it is you read...
Finally re my post above that comments on the witty reply of the witless... I posted that after I had a very abusive email from the OP of this thread... so I felt that the reply was warranted there also... I hope you work out all the foibles of this phone, and good luck working out all the info, it can be daunting I know but it is worth it in the end...
