bluetooth dun tether? - Hero CDMA General

is there an app out there availble that uses dun to tether instead of pan please let me kno it would be greatly appreiciated

PDAnet has the ability to make DUN happen but it says only on 2.0+.
I'd like it too for my TOMTOM's live traffic.

yea would pdanet possibly work on one of the 2.0 plus roms or i bluetooth still not really full working yet

Tether 2 phones together?

I know this seems almost pointless...But I have both the Diamond 2 on att, with an unlimited data plan, and the Droid Eris through a pre paid. I want to know if it is possible to use the "Wi-Fi Router" on the Diamond 2 to share internet with my Droid Eris?
Ive tried a few times, and I think it might have to do with the Diamond2 showing ps as IBSS ad hoc connection.
Is there another way? or is it even possible to begin with?
The reason is just so that if I run out of data on the prepaid, I can connect to the Diamond2 if i really need to if im not near a wifi spot.
I dunno if this helps but I tethered my xperia to my blackberry by using the blackberry as a "bluetooth modem". I'm not sure if theres such a setting in android (probably)
Take a look, see if it can be done without wifi
thanks, but im trying to connect through my Diamond 2 and unfortunately android doesnt ask me what services I want to use when they are paired.
Android does not connect to ad-hoc connections out of the box. You need to root your Eris. But as far as I can tell, no one has figured out to root it yet.
I'm trying the same thing...
But my setup is attempting to use internet sharing or the WMWiFi application to share internet to the bluetooth of a Samsung Propel Pro to the bluetooth of an older Samsung Blackjack with no sim card. Just to get the older BJ to see the internet, but I can't see to get Bluetooth PAN working on the setup.
Is this possible to do? What am I missing?
anyone got an idea. this would be a cool trick to do. Cheapest VOIP Cheapest VOIP calls
i know that if u can put both connection to ur pc from wifi with both or to wifi with on and usb with the other. in network connections u can "bridge" the connection

Tethering

I have a G2 with Tmobile and use a lot of data on it. A tab would be much better and I'd like to pick up the wifi version of the Xoom. Now seeing as Verizon has tiered pricing for their mobile broadband/tablet data plans I'd be much better off tethering my G2 to the Xoom, but which methods would work? I tried using Barnacle as an experiment but with a bit of reading found out that devices that aren't ad-hoc wouldn't connect (my PSP and CR-48 notebook wouldn't work, and reading the wiki the PS3 doesn't either) which leaves USB tethering. I know you have to install additional software with PDAnet tethering, so would USB tethering be possible android to android?
The Wireless Tether app works fine between my rooted Droid X and my CR-48, so I imagine it would work with a Xoom as well.
It should work with Wireless Tether. I'm hoping for that, if not, bluetooth tethering should work. And if that doesn't work, I'll have to use Connectify on my laptop to create a wifi hotspot of my tethered data connection from my little Eris! Hopefully, that won't be the case though, it'd be burden when not at home.
Yea.. simply just download the Wifi-Tether app. It works with everything, if you're rooted of course.
Or just use 2.2's built in tethering ability. Works just as good ~.~
Thanks, for some reason I forgot about the built in tether/hotspot, I think because when I bought my G2 the rep tried to sell me tethering for $15 a month or something. The wifi tether and barnacle tether apps don't work but the built in one does.

[Q] No DUN no ADHOC rant.....Honeycomb 3.1?

So all of our phones with Wifi hotspot features create an ADHOC connection which Honeycomb does not support. Same goes with Bluetooth, no DUN. Google what the hell? Ya ya,carriers this and carriers that but what about people paying for hotspot features on the phone. I have customers that I need to setup to pair with the TF but it seems nothing will work without rooting and that can be phone specific. So the TF is great as long as you are close to a WIFI connection is supports?
If I'm missing something someone please fill me in.

Are you rooted?
Are you simply pairing or using another app on your phone?
Can you run through your connection steps?
Thanks,

But why would they do this knowing what the phones support?

I am using the hotspot feature on my Evo, and I've been tethering to it at work since the day I got my Transformer. I'm not doing anything special, just turning on the hotspot and letting the TF connect. Now, my Evo is rooted with a ROM that "unlocks" the hotspot functionality so I'm not paying extra, and I'm not using the Wireless Tether app, but it's the same concept.

The hotspot feature on your ROM is supporting a true wifi connection and not peer to peer adhoc. I can't always root customers phones.
~DC
I may be misunderstanding how it works, but this isn't a wireless tether baked into the ROM, it's the built-in Sprint hotspot feature that I'm using, just unlocked so I don't have to pay extra. If someone was paying for the hotspot feature on Sprint, they wouldn't need root, but maybe this is only the case with Sprint's implementation.
i was able to do both wifi and bluetooth tethering. took me a while to figure out, (since i've never done it before, less due to the difficulty of doing it)
assuming the phone supports Bluetooth tethering, it should always work.
I have a DroidX and I can tether using the built in stock Hotspot feature or with Bluetooth. However, I can't tether using an ad hoc connection because I get an error stating that the device doesn't support ad hoc connections...
So, it is definitely device specific and it will be something the carriers remove as many report being able to do so with root (my device is rooted and I can't connect via ad hoc - although, I haven't d/l or tried out the pdaNet app).
I will also add that the bluetooth tethering has worked MUCH better than the wifi - easier/faster to connect, runs pretty fast, and my phone doesn't overheat as much....
Works fine with my evo. The Evo has proper infrastructure wifi hotspot.
Maybe the users need to update their phones?
I went into a store to try a tf and there was no internet so I turned on my WiFi hotspot on my sgsII and it worked perfectly fine, not sure if that's the same as you're asking but that works.

a lot of clarification
Hi all,
I need your help, understanding ... well everything about wifi/TF/WM6.5/adhoc and whatever the other connection is?
I don't think of myself as a noob, but to be honest I'm lost with the wifi on the TF. So here it goes: I have TF and HD2. Under WM6.5 I can't get the TF to see the shared internet through the "wifi router" application on the phone. But then I run a custom Desire HD ROM and this one (can't remember the application) shares and gives access to the TF?!?!
First off, which is which? Which is adhoc and which is infrastructure? And what is the difference (sorry i did look on the internet, but that got me confused even more because I could not see any difference). Are you saying that a standard (not rooted Android) will have the same problem? I was thinking of switching to an android phone so that I can get the easy sharing option, but if I have to root a brand new phone????
Any help will be appreciated,
rio
Easy way to tether off a rooted phone.
Install one of the older versions of wireless tether that supports bluetooth.
Turn on the bluetooth DUN on wireless tether.
Hit ok when it asks to turn on Bluetooth and make discoverable.
On the transformer go to settings-wireless-bluetooth
Scan for your device and pair.
Once paired you should see a little wrench next to your device, click on it
Under Profiles, it should show tethering with a checkbox. Click this and in a few seconds Wireless tether should buzz its connected and off you go.
I've been able to tether my transformer like this since out of the box.
Edit - BTW I've tried this with PDAnet and other non rooted tehtering programs, and I couldn't get it to work with those options. Just FYI
the difference between ad-hoc and infrastructure is the way devices communicate.
infrastructure is kinda like the way we send messages via the post office. we send it to a central place, then it figures out how to deliver the message. this is how true routers operate
ad-hoc is peer-to-peer. imagine passing notes back in elementary school.
( Do you like me [yes] [no] )
some phones comes with a tethering app without having to root, but this typically requires you to pay extra fee to your carrier ($30 for sprint)
if you don't want to pay that, then you have to root your phone to either get a rom that already supports infrastructure mode, or download an app that does. [ ie Wifi Tether ]
people googling "honeycomb dun" would be incredibly misinformed by this thread.

You are right. I put Honeycomb 3.1 in the title but forgot to mention in the OP if anyone heard that 3.1 would have support for DUN or Ad Hoc.
Sorry for any confusion I might have caused

No BT tethering?

I am having no luck tethering between my iPhone with G 10.1 over Bluetooth. I am using the stock iOS tethering function. It connected and I got the blue icon on my GT, but when I access the internet, it says no connection (see attached).
Android never supported BT tethering. What do you expect? You need wi-fi tethering but again, most iPhone tethering apps (if you jailbreak) only support ad-hoc network and Android does not support ad-hoc networking.
On the other hand, if you *upgrade* your iPhone to a new Android phone and root the phone (if you get a carrier phone. Otherwise, you don't need to root the phone), you will be able to use the native Android wi-fi AP feature that your tab can easily connects to.
I have a DROID X and tether it through bluetooth just fine to my Galaxy Tab. Neither device is rooted running the latest OTA updates. I believe the functionality is from Gingerbread.

I stand corrected. I seems to work with various Moto Droid phones. But a few posts I saw mentioned it didn't work for iPhones.
Yep, when I had my Droid X I used BT tethering. I recently switched to a Thunderbolt and BT tethering no longer works, so I now use wifi, which is a perfectly fine alternative for me.
both bluetooth and wifi tether work with the iphone, all you need to do is replace the wpa file on the galaxy tab. Ill post the link when i find it, itson the developers part.
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123638
Fallow the instructions, i use both bt n wifi

I am already tethering over wifi out of the box, between GT and iPhone. It's just BT that I am having trouble with, and I wanted BT because it is better on battery consumption.
Are you sure I need to mod the wpa file for BT? They seemed to be only talking about wifi adhoc in the thread, and didn't mention BT. Once again, I am able to tether and connect, just no data going through. As for support from Android, I was already able to tether over BT and wifi between iPhone and Asus transformer. Just the GT that I'm having problem.
I am not rooted, and so can't just try the file to see easily.
That file just added ad-hoc wi-fi support to OS. Doubt it has anything to do with BT tethering at all.
In order for BT tethering to work, you will need BT PAN protocol support in the GT. I tried myself with my Samsung Captivate running 2.3 Gingerbread and there is no PAN support at all on my phone. Not sure if there is PAN support on the TAB (it needs to be supported on both side). Given that they both are Samsung devices, I suspect Samsung didn't implement PAN protocol in either side.
To check if you have PAN, when you pair your tab to your iphone, on your tab go to settings->BT settings->your iPhone icon and tap the settings icon next to it. Did you see PAN service listed there? If not, you can't tether via BT.

When I went into setting of my GT, I see that my iphone is connected, and I can select tether. I will show that it is tethered, and a blue icon showed up as in my screen shot. Again, everything looked like its working, but no internet.
Its silly that a Droid can tether over bt and my galaxy s2 can't. Come on samsung...

I sold my Captivate in anticipating of a new phone from AT&T and dusted off my old BlackJack 2 WM6.1 phone. Enabled tethering on it and connected to my GT 10.1 via BT. Everything works out great. No problem. You will see two icons: one BT icon and one big blue BT icon once tethering is successful.
So, your problem is on your iphone side. Not GT side.

I see the two icons you described too, but GT not receiving any data. iPhone tethered with my Asus Transformer over bluetooth without problem though.
I don't know what to say. It has no problem with my 3-yead old and really slow Windows Mobile phone. My GT is now my temporary smart phone (using my Bj2 as data connection) until I AT&T gets its act together and release the Galaxy S2

Easy tether to a transformer?

No, I don't think so. I had one app which had to be installed on phone and tab and was able to tether over bluetooth but it was very very unstable and never worked longer than 10 seconds.
Here is my setup:
SGS (i9000) with darkyrom and build in wifi tether + tasker app for automatically switch on and off wifi tether when a specific bluetooth device is connected.
I use my tab in the car and when i start it, the bluetooth connection from phone to the hands-free is established and wifi tethering enabled with tasker automatically. this takes less power and has the full internet speed. works great for me!

You can tether over bluetooth (The instructions are around here somewhere)
I use PDA Net connected over bluetooth to my Droid Incredible. I have the paid for version, but the free version should work too. Paid version lets you get into https sites and VPN's. I don't use a lot now since through work I have a MiFi from AT&T, but sometimes I get into GSM deadspots where my CDMA (Verizon) phone works just fine.
You can also use Wireless tether which is free :
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
OR
https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether
Support bluetooth and Wifi. Works great !
PDAnet for tablet works if all you do is use browser
