Isthere a utility to change file associations?
In particular, how can I get clicking a .url extension to open Opera 8.5 inplace of PIE?
Use Resci File Explorer....
Or gsfinder.
Or the registry - CLSID section.
V
Tillanosoft Pocket Tweak can allocate file extensions,
It is a small program and freeware, enables you to edit registry etc with file extension allocation as well.

File association
Hi,

Please specify the full path (HK......\...).
My problem is to show the file extensions, by now my JJ only show the file name with a (useless) icon on the left.
Is there a registry (CLSID or some other) to activate the extensions, without installing a third-party software (Resco explorer, etc.)
Thank you.

Not sure about the earlier roms, but in the latest rom (Ivan...etc), you can click the file and select properties. Under properties, you can select "Associate" to link your file to specific programs.
Hi folks,
I currently have a problem with file explorer. I opened the windows folder and now I am stuck with the time icon, I wait...and I wait... and nothing happens it freezes the phone. After a soft reset and then going back into file explorer it goes back to the folder I last looked at which is the windows folder and freezes again.. so basically I can't use file explorer anymore? Any suggestions?
Steve
Is it locking up? or does it just need more time to load and display all the contents of \windows. Can you minimize file explorer by pressing the hang up key and work on something else, then go back later to file explorer. Are you able to change directories now?
Are you using a shortcut to launch file explorer
I always use Total commander for file management and \windows does take a while to load. It too tries to open the last used directory but if the folder is not available, eg network share, it defaults to the root directory after a warning. Not the answer to your problem, I know, but Total Commander is free and it is much better featured than the standard file explorer.

Try this on a Registry Editor:
HKLM - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer - LastLocation - 0 (zero)
Soft Reset then try to launch File Explorer again.

Thanks folks, got it working. I needed to change the registery values. The phone was freezing up and even after 10 minutes was still not showing the contents of the windows folder.
Da_mayhem just fyi I edited the localpath folder from '/windows' to '/' this seemed to solve the problem. The lastlocation value was already set to 0 for some reason?
Thanks for your help guys...

I seem to have the same Problem with my HTC Touch (non-branded, German Version). However I do not have the aforementioned registry values. There is no "file explorer" unter HKLM - Software - Microsoft.
Any Ideas on how to get my file explorer running again?
In the meantime I'm using TotalCommander, however TC doesn't support sending files via Bluetooth, or at least not that I know of. I can only send via Infrared, or am I missing something?
What is REGISTRY EDITOR? Please help me that! I m having the same problem on my XDA ORBIT ii

I tried this, but didn't have a "File Explorer" entry. So I created one and the LastLocation value as noted, but it still opens in the Windows folder and locks up. Any clues?

I know this is an old post...but after extensive searching and frustration...S.V.I fixed my issue. I just wanted to say thanks to S.V.I
I couldn't find file explorer and it was freezing...like S.V.I pointed out- it is HKCU and not HKLM.
I had done 2 hard resets...and removing "windows" from the path fixed it.
Thanks to all that posted solutions here on this great site!
Update:
Spoke to soon...I can't enter my Windows folder at all using file explorer- I could earlier. I can enter anywhere else...just not my Window folder...I can with Resco explorer. I have to apply S.V.I suggestion to stop it from freezing...but magically-"\windows" keeps re-appearing in my registry.
Update:
Found another solution that actually worked for me!
open File Explorer
Click on Menu>Sort> change it to Name
I think i know the solution
i too have experienced the same problem like this. but then this is what i do. and it's surprisingly works.
1) soft reset your phone
2) click on file explorer again
3) the loading symbol will always appear, but for now just let it be.
4) close the file explorer by tapping 'hang up' key/button. this will supposedly bring you back to home screen
5) wait for half an hour or longer
6) open file explorer
7) the windows folder loaded successfully
Typos
Ayobi's solution worked.
I have a HTC Diamond 2 WM6.5. File explorer froze as I sorted the files in the Windows folder. Exactly followed Ayobi's suggestion. Got out of the mess.
I won't visit Windows folder again!!!
Thanks Ayobi and others for their suggestions.
Jay.

This definitely worked - on a related note you can go into Registry Editor (HKCU - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer) and change the SortOrder value to anything but 2 (apparently 2 is for Type). Soft reset and reload the program, and it should load a lot faster.

I had same problem, because I tried to sort Windows folder by file Type. Oops.
I know it's an old post, but here's my two cents (because this thread guided me to a slightly modified resolution.)
My resolution on Tilt2 TP2 WinMo 6.5 was found here:
HKCU - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer - LastLocation - 0 (zero)
HKCU - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer - LastPath - \ (slash)
HKCU - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer - SortOrder - 1
That did the trick for me. Was able to open File Explorer. Strangely, it took me to the Windows folder again; but didn't hang this time. Maybe because I skipped soft reset (so maybe registry change may not have taken effect entirely?)
If anyone is interested in changing the left soft key on the Today page, the registry key is as follows:
KEY: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Today/Keys/112
String Value: Default -> Name to Display
String Value: Open -> "Path to exe"
For example, I changed Calendar to "Comm Manager" as follows:
Value: Default set to Comm Mgr
Value: Open set to "\Windows\CommManagerLink.exe"
No need to restart phone.
hey, how about the weather icon ? i got no use for it...can that also be remapped ? and which registry editor do you recommend ?..thank you
How about adding the New SMS function
I'v downloaded the "New SMS.lnk" file and had a look at the text in it which is as follows:
49#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS" -to ""-body""
Can this be used? I haven't managed so far
Thanks,

Yup, just do not use the 49#.
Can't get it to work.
Name changes fine but application is always Calendar that opens.
On a soft-reset it reverts back to Calendar as per default.
Would you mind checking that it works on your device please?
thanks,
use "softkey aplet" it can change both soft key to any application installed in your device.
Copy softkey.apl into Windows folder an you will find program icon in the setting page. Start-setting-system-soft key
I use this file since WM5 and really not remember who is create this great applet but BIG thanks to them.
and a BIG thanks to you too...works fine
Add that one to my list of indispensibles
I can't fin the windows directory when i'm browsing with windows vista (even by showing hidden files and folders) :/
So i put it into my memory card and tried to move it directly by my Touch but it's like the .CPL file is hidden too.
Any help ? (i'm sorry i'm a rookie at this).
Just tried it on mine with XP
The Show hidden files/folders works fine here.
Maybe Vista?
Can anyone else using vista confirm?
Failing that, copy it to you My Documents folder, then hold your cursor on the screen underneath the last file. You'll get an option to "Show all files"
Can you delete Softkey Applet after you apply the changes?
Thanks, actually i forgot to show systems files into my Touch, i could install it and it worked Great little program !
this is freak'n great thanks!!!

where u got the new sms?
Here are the files
Unzip the NewSMS file and save the .lnk file in your \Windows\Start menu\programs directory
Now install the Soft key Applet .cab and point one of your soft keys to the NewSMS program (I found there were two. One works, one doesn't)
Done

The \Windows folder on your Touch is a system folder, and Vista doesnt display them. Go to folder options, and check the "Show system files" option. No open your Touch on Vista, go to \ and there you go \Windows

erm... how to get to \Windows\Start menu\programs directory? but before save the .ink file, do i need to install any program to support this newsms?
No new prog required to support it lunarken
It's a shortcut to open the sms prog and start with a new, blank message.
If you can't find your Windows folder on the Touch, hold your stylus below the last file in File Explorer and select "Show all files".
If you're running Vista, you apparently ned to make sure you have "Show System files" selected.
It only needs to go in the Windows/Start Menu/Programs folder so that the Soft Key Applet can find it.
Hi All
I'm sure someone will be able to tell me what I am doing wrong
I have loaded Mortscript on to my E650 and have copied a script from this site and saved it as wireless.mscr
When I run the file from Windows explorer - it opens the file in Word on my E650 and does nothing.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks
Uninstall Mortscript and then reinstall it. I guess it's a matter of file association in the registry.
mortscript
Thanks....have tried that and it still does not work.
Any other ideas?
You must run once the mortscript's executable to create the associations with the mscr files.

yep, ran the yellow file that was located in the \program files\mortscript folder. It gave me a message to say the file associations has been made yet the docs still open in Word !!

Try deleting the key at HKCR\.mscr...then opening mortscript.exe Then try to open your script. It deletes the file assc.

Yes this is a registry key. You will need a registry editor Total commander has a free one. Then just navigate to HKey_Classes_Root(hkcr) and locate the folder .mscr open it and delete the key in there..
In order to locate and edit the registry in total commander tap the / in the top right corner of the screen right next to the .. Then double tap on the \\ then double tap on Registry then HKCR then .mscr and delete the key labeled default ,or you could just double tap on it and then in the box provided type MortScript
key
Thanks,
have done as suggested, removed the keys, have removed and reloaded Mortscript. Rebooted phone....and they still open with Word Mobile !!!
Jeez - can it be so hard !!!
When you open that key what does it say.... when you open word go to menu and options and in display....click on word files, i dont think that will work but its worth a try

My word seems to be an editor only - as dont have any options to select.

hi
Am getting somewhere now...turns out the file was named wireless.mscr.txt so have edited it to reflect the proper extension. Will try again now
Thanks again
well that makes a lot more sense...since the actual ext that you are opening is a txt. just drop the .txt
It's probably far more simple: You script has the wrong extension. It must be .mscr, not .psw, .doc or .txt. The default Explorer hides the extension, so your file's pobably named "somescript.mscr.psw" (or *.doc) but is shown only as "somescript.mscr". Use an explorer replacement like Total Commander or Resco, or the desktop's Explorer ("My mobile device") with "Hide extension for known documents" disabled in the options, and you'll see the wrong extension.
Edit: Oops, didn't realize there's a second page...
Okay, I searched for "change icons" and got two pages of threads on how to change program icons. Some provided great information; however, none addressed my need.
I'm interested in changing only FOLDER icons, and ONLY those in QuickMenu (see attached images). The folder icons are all the same except for two, the Games folder and the Office Mobile folder. They both have a small file inside the directory that's called "icon."
I would like to change any and all directories to whatever icon I choose, or design. Is this possible? If so, how?
Thanks,
Peter

Thanks for the quick reply. I had a look at that program, and the web site, and I'm completely confused. It looks like a program for my PC, and not my phone. Furthermore, I don't see anything mentioned on how to change an icon.
HELP!
ADDENDUM: Furthermore, as I said in my original post, I DO NOT want to change program icons, such as exe files or dll files. From what I can tell, PExplorer is desiged to modify the inner workings of exe and dll files, etc.
I want to change the icons for a directory (folder image). These are not programs or dlls.
Thanks,
Peter
Figured it out ...
I figured it out. It took a bit of thought, and some weird manipulation using Notepad, but now I can change any QuickMenu icon to almost whatever I want, as long as there's either an EXE or DLL file that contains the icon.
Cheers!
----------------------------------
Since I don't plan to return to this thread, and since there may be someone who wants to know what I did, here's my solution:
REMEMBER: This solution ONLY works if you want to change folder icons WITHIN the QuickMenu subset of folders. It does NOT work on program icons, or for any other icons for that matter (ONLY QUICKMENU FOLDERS).
01) Find an EXE or DLL file with the icon you want. If this file contains more than one icon, then you'll need to know the icon number within the program. This can be quite difficult to determine. However, for the purpose of this discussion, I'm assuming you want to use the MAIN icon, which is usually designated as icon "0" (zero) within the EXE or DLL file. We'll go with "0" for this discussion.
02) Your phone should already have at least one (probably two) folder icon files. The two in question are usually used for the Start Menu Games directory and for the Start Menu Office Mobile directory. Using Total Commander or any similar program (File Explorer will NOT work), make your way to either the Games or Office Mobile directory within the Windows\Start Menu. Whether it's the Games folder or the Office Mobile folder, you should find a shortcut file called icon. This is the file that determines how the folder will appear within the QuickMenu structure.
03) Copy this file to your PC. Anywhere will do as long as you remember where you put it. Make a second copy of it just in case you "ruin" your attempt to change the icon using these instructions. At least you can go back to what you had before.
04) Right click on this file and select Properties. In the General tab, uncheck the Read-only box. Click on Apply.
05) Open NotePad on your PC.
06) Within NotePad, click on File and then on Open. The Open dialogue box appears. At the bottom of this dialogue box are three horizontal white boxes. The second box has the title "Files of type." The default entry is "Text documents (*.txt). Click on the down arrow and change this to "All files." Now find the icon file you copied to your PC in (3) above and open it within NotePad.
07) You will see a line of instructions at the top of the file. These instructions tell your phone where to find the icon image. What we need to do, therefore, is change the instructions to another icon image.
08) Now let's assume that you have a Start Menu folder within QuickMenu called PDF files, and you would like that folder to have the Adobe Reader icon. To do this, change the line of instructions from what it currently reads to the following:
1#AdobeReaderLE.exe,-0
09) Make sure there's a carriage return after the final "0"
10) Re-save the file. The file name must not be changed. It must always remain as "icon."
11) Now copy this new file to the actual PDF directory within your phone's Start Menu. Soft reset your phone and the PDF folder will now have the Adobe icon.
DONE!
Here are some tips:
The above example assumes that the AdobeReaderLE.exe file is in your main Windows directory. If the EXE file you want to use is anywhere else, you need to direct the instructions appropriately. Here's an example for an EXE file contained on your Storage Card, and within the Program Files directory. Let's say you installed BsB Tweaks to the Storage Card, and you want to use the main BsB icon for one of your Start Menu folders. Here's how the instructions would look:
1#\Storage Card\Program Files\BsB\Tweaks\BsB Tweaks.exe,-0
Remember to always save the file with the name "icon." Always put the revised icon file inside the directory whose appearance you want to change.
Happy Changing!
Peter
P.S. Since I can't seem to add images to a post after the fact, I will submit another post shortly with images to show you what I did with my phone.
Before and After Images
As promised, attached (below) are images to show you what I did with my phone.
