So I'm in a webpage. I want to copy and paste a section of a paragraph of text.
I hold my finger over the text till I get the option to turn text selection on. I turn it on then proceed to attempt to select the text I'm interested in. Except I can't see the text as my finger obscures it. So I have to keep trying to do it blind untill by complete luck the right bit is highlighted.
What bright spark allowed this through quality control? It's idiotic and wastes so much time.

Tip #40. Doesnt work in everything, many apps have their own settings for select.
Thanks but the tip #40 is even more irritating as it means somewhere down the line someone realised highlighting text could do with some help, but they disabled it by default.
heh, yea, but thats half the fun of it!

Hi guys, new to the forum, thought i'd start off slowly haha.
This is an extremely simple question, but i had no idea where else to ask. I've been trying to select things on my Blackstone but cannot select anything without also opening it. For instance, i want to select an old note in order to delete it. The only thing i can think of is tapping it and this obviously opens it. Same thing for old or duplicate messages in a text conversation. I can select messages but only if i tap the contact, then press back to return the conversation. Its then highlighted blue and i can delete it. Any ideas on how to do this? Its simple but infuriating!

Tap AND Hold the stylus down until a menu pops up - most applications will respond differently to tap and hold.
I also learnt this early on and it surprised my at first !
Thanks alot that works for getting rid of notes
Can't seem to select individual messages in conversation view still. Weird!
sometime tap and slide or hold as suggested. holding movies and photos for a second selects them
How To Get Rid of The Black Autocomplete Box When Using Hardware Keyboard
To Hide the Autocomplete Box:
1. Type as Normal Until Words Start Appearing
2. Press Menu Button Twice
3. Autocomplete should hide itself
To Bring the Autcomplete Box Back:
1. Press the text field once
2. Should Pop Back up once you start typing
Super thanks to the1wingedangel for figuring it out!
Original Post:
But does anyone know how to get rid of the black word suggestions that pop up underneath the text entry box when your using the full keyboard on the G1? I for the life of my can not figure out what auto correct option to uncheck. The worst part is that its really unpredictable and might show up 1 out of 10 times i start typing with the keyboard.
Thanks guys : )
EDIT: ooops sorry. Over looked the word 'full'
Good question...that started showing up randomly for me a couple of days ago.
Double tapping the text box while your keyboard is open should get rid of it from showing up again.
Hmm good idea uber, will give it a shot next time the thing pops up and let you know how it works out.
That annoyed the hell out of me so much i switched roms. It would auto-replace words that I didn't want replaced.
Alright so I tried the double tap thing and no luck on that front. Didn't work out for me. Anyone else try that fix out?
And I know what you mean CBowley. It might just take a .lib deletion or something to fix tho. Heres to hoping that something comes up : )

Make sure you're doing it before you type anything in the box or it's locked to the ON position. I've done it a few times on my phone right here and it's working like clockwork. :-/
Ah I see so are you saying to double tap before I enter anything in the textbox ever? The problem is that it will show up completely random times like 1 in 10 or something. But I'll try double tapping before entering anything in the field and see if that keeps it at bay.
To turn off auto complete and auto correct:
Menu->settiings->Locale & Text->Touch Input (or whatever KB u r using)->Text Input
From here you can turn on/off all KB/typing features.

Thanks maubig, but those settings don't help change the autocompletion for the full keyboard. VK isn't giving me the problem.
Ok, I seem to have figured out how to kill that annoying text suggestion pop up when using the hardware keyboard. When it pops up, double click menu button. To re-activate it, touch the text box once, then start typing. Seems to work.

Excellent Angel! That worked perfect for me. Did the trick exactly like you said it would. Lets see if it works for other people too. Time to change thread title. Thanks : )
Thanks for this... I despised that stupid black suggestion box.
On WM 6.5, I find it almost impossible to edit word documents. Highlighting certain sections for copying, cutting is next to impossible. By repeatedly tapping on the screen, you can highlight a word or paragraph, but forget about highlighting 2 words next to each other. Anybody else ran into this problem and found a fix?
Press and hold for about as long as it normally takes to trigger a popup menu. You won't see any indication that anything is happening, but after the proper delay you will be able to select instead of scrolling.

Great. Will try that out as well.
Now, how about the other way around? I have some 3rd party software where I would like finger scrolling to be enabled but default behavior is no scrolling. Could someone direct me to the appropriate registry?
After pressing the bottom left hardware botton to select text, I'm having problem placing the cursor to accurately indicate the starting and ending position of the selection. What is the big secret on how to do this operation right?
i have the exact same problem.. i wish the phone had arrows or a trackball.. and when you select text twards the far right of the text box, it auto moves the screen back to the center of the box.. its very difficult, the only advice i can offer is pinch zoom in very close, till the text takes up most of the screen, and highlight better. of course pinchzooming method will only work for email and web pages.. no help for texting..
If I zoom in, then either the beginning of end of the selection block is no longer in view, and dragging does not automatically scroll the screen like in iPhone.

As someone who is coming from an iPhone I can tell you that this is something that I really miss.
Android needs to learn how to do proper copy and paste (this is not just a Samsung thing).
On a side note, I am really hating the email client on android, this is not a phone very usable in a corporate (Exchange) environment!
Perhaps it is a mistake to omit the trackball?? Looks like trackball is extremely crucial for any Android phone.
Kurtbee, you're right. Google has not thought through the design of copy and paste properly yet.

No, trackballs are a step backwards. Android should simply implement a better way to select text - the iPhone does it beautifully.
I also am not in love with any of the email clients - even K-9 has a crappy/ugly interface. And why isn't there a way to force check email in the Integrated Mailbox?

Totally agreeing with you. However, copying Apple might land Google into a law suit, so I think they'll be weary of that.
BTW, for INPUT field only, I accidentally discover a way to accurately do it. Here's how:
1) On the Swype keyboard (that's why it is only limited to input field, unfortunately), draw a North west to south east line going across the upper right corner of the Swipe key. In other word, from the upper case arrow position to the SYM key. This will change the keyboard to one that contacts cursor, home, select all, select, text, cut, copy, paste.
2) Then use the cursor key to move to the one end of the selection block.
3) Press the select text button
4) Move cursor to the other end of the selection box, followed by either a cut or paste key depending on what you want to do. This will copy the block to the clipboard.
Unfortunately, often I need to select from non-input field as well, and there is no solution for that yet.
Hope this little tip helps everyone. Cheers.
Same thing for the samsung keyborad if you press the 123 field for a long time.
Now we need to find a way to do the same on a web page ...

Thanks, but how do I change the keyboard from Swype to the Samsung keyboard? Is this keyboard from Samsung or from Google?
Just touch the text until you see a pop up.
Then you should have the possibility to change the keyboard
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Got it. Thank!
Wow, thanks guys, this will make typing a lot easier! You would think the arrowy keyboard thing would be more highlighted and easily accesible since it's making the experience much better. Well, maybe in the gingerbread, they didn't hire the Palm UI guy for nothing...
I find it a little difficult, but can usually get it after 2 or 3 tries max.
Maybe using fingernail is more accurate?
Finger nails do not work on capacity touchscreen though. Even if it does, how do you deal with situation where the selection block span outside the screen? There is no provision to scroll the screen during the selection process.
HTC Sense Androids have a great copy-paste feature identical to IPhone. Hopefully it can get ported to galaxy
Im using both the gmail app and the sprint email app, but im unable to copy and select text in any of my mail. Can someone tell me how? its a dumb question, but i couldnt figure it out on the phone.
thanks in advanced
I miss being able to do this on my Evo. I'm surprised that the Epic doesn't seem to support it.
I don't see how to do more than word either there is an app in the app market called "Copy paste" it will let let you copy and paste anything even text from a webpage or even text from a picture.
-McMex
Slide out your keyboard, hold down the shift key, and use your finger on the screen to highlight the text, when you release you finger from the screen, it will copy.
Go to any text input area, hold your finger down and select paste.
Voila!
Haha nice trick it works but a little finnecky. Still I like how the iphone worked where you can just hold down and select the area you wanna select. I hope this changes on a firmware or android update. Which update would this change belong to anyway? And how might I got about contacting someone about the issue.
Thanks for the tip
Copy and paste is officially supported in froyo. Nice trick though.
