I see a lot of talk on the forums about AT&T and the T9193, but there's been very little concrete data about Canadian 3G (Rogers, Bell/Telus).
I've been in Australia for the past month, and there I picked up a T9193, and had it on a pre-paid SIM with Vodafone. Apparently Vodafone's roaming partner in Canada is Rogers, so when I got off the plane in Vancouver I -- a Telus customer -- was able to confirm that Rogers works with this phone on 3G.
When I arrived home -- Victoria -- and got my Telus 3G SIM, it started working immediately.
I don't know much about coverage yet...seems solid in Victoria.
So, the phone works with Rogers and Telus (and therefore Bell), so Canadians should buy away!

Did it come with 6.5.3 ROM? Im assuming you have already flashed it. How much and where did you buy it while you were there? Did it come with the 16GB card installed already? I know that was alot to ask, but I want to get one. since I have ATT in US or considering switching carriers to Tmo when they launch theirs.
Thanks
^^ +1 on Price
How is the reception?

I ordered mine online from personal digital, out of Australia for $834USD delivered. It came with a 16GB micro sd in the box. I don't know what ROM it had because it was Telstra branded and I flashed it to a WWE ROM & now Dutty's 1.5. It works great with AT&T, my screen has an H on top for the most part since I'm getting HSDPA. I was considering switching to T-Mobile to get it as well, but now I don't have to, and I have it now.
Telstra HD2 (T9193) on Bell
I bought the Telstra HD2 and i am with Bell and the coverage is excellent. Bell will tell you that it is not compatible, but that is not the case. All towers broadcast 850 and 1900MHz so there is no reduction in coverage with the limitation to 850MHz (and the lower frequency bands have better building penetration anyway). I am very happy with the phone I am getting about 6.5Mbps download and 1.5 upload with Bell in Ottawa when i run through the built-in router feature.

Sorry for making an old topic bump.
I am looking for an HD2 T9193 used on ebay, just to end up my contract with Bell. Now i know i can buy one, i was having the same answers from Bell about compatibility. Thanx alot!
Hi all,
Now i got my T9193, i can tell it works partially on Bell's network. I got the ''3G'' on top, i can make voice calls and SMS but ABSOLUTELY NO DATA. Bell told me they use both frequencies UMTS850 and UMTS1900, 850 for voice and SMS, and 1900 for data. Its strange. Maybe because i roam on Telus towers here, this give me trouble big time since 10 years. I will break my contract with them. I have also tried a Telus SIM card in my Telstra and you know what? Everything works. 3G, 3.5G; HSPA (H on top) and data connect and let me navigate the web. Maybe if i could move my house to roam on a Bell tower instead of a Telus one i could have 3.5G....since Telus and Bell share their towers it gives many glitches like that.
Thank you for reading!
Works well on Bell Mobility!

Why would any other carrier be? If it's not their phone, why would they support it? Glad you got it to work.

Yea, you're paying for their wireless services, not their undying support for foreign hardware.
It's not their obligation/requirement to bend over backwards and support every phone that comes their way. I mean, hell, most CSRs don't even know how to troubleshoot their own carrier phones, what make you think they have enough exposure/training for foreign phones?
That's like saying that your Internet Service Provider should be held accountable because you werent able to configure your PS3/Xbox360 online. Just because they provide you internet services, doesn't mean it's their job to support hardware that they dont carry.

Anyone here from Canada that have seen 3G on their Xperia??? I am not sure what's going on since officially Rogers (FIDO) supports 1900 3G, or at least it worked a year ago on my Nokia E51 which is was only 1900 for North American 3G. Xperia refuses to get any signal when I am switching it to 3G mode.
Anyone?
Sorry, Nokia e51 was only 850 3G. That's explains it....
So you're not getting any 3G action on Rogers/Fido?
That's too bad.
I thought that 3G would work in Canada, and I'm really tempted to buy the X1, based on this
http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=6165
Ah, now I see some more clarification on the subject:
from the Pocketnow article comments:
"The Xperia X1i does not have the 850 Band.
Users in Canada, where they mostly have the 850 Band, have not been able to use 3G on their Xperia.
In the US, 850 and 1900 Bands overlap with more coverage by 1900 than the 850 Band. So, you will get 1900 Band reception wherever there is 850 Band but not the other way around.
http://www.cellularmap.net/att_850_1900.shtml"
Yea that sucks. But having edge is much better than using gprs...which is what i'm stuck with at the moment.
Will have to see how the phone is when it comes in 1-2 days.
I'm a Fido user as well and waiting on my Xperia (should be here tomorrow!). I've been driving myself nuts by trying to determine whether or not Rogers/Fido users will be able to pickup 3G with the X1i.
I'll definitely contribute my findings to this thread, as hopefully we can keep it going even if there is no 3G on the X1i yet...It would be a dream come true if the X1i was able to have the X1a's firmware flashed to it which could then change the frequency of the UMTS band (or something like that).

NEvolution, are you saying that if we don't pick up a 3G signal with the X1i, then it should fall back to EDGE which is faster than GPRS? Reason I ask is that my HTC Universal now has GPRS only, so at least I would be getting a _small_ upgrade in speed.
Plus with the cost of data in Canada and the quicker rate at which you'll burn through 3G bytes, it's still not very tempting for me just yet.
Yea, that was the case with the Touch Pro when I had it. Since it didn't have 850 3G it was always on EDGE. It never even touched GPRS cause EDGE is everywhere for me.
I would assume it's exactly the same case with the X1i, and any other phone with supported bands.
As for burning through data, I've got 6GBs a month to use so I'm not worried

Yea unfortunately I missed my opportunity to grab that option...I have City Fido, and when I called, the CSR said I couldn't just add it on...then later another CSR said that I could have, but now it's expired. 1gb for $30...b0o.
aww boo...I haven't even gotten past 1GB/mth yet. Seems pretty hard to use it up since the max I have is EDGE for now, and that includes tethering and using it as a wifi router too.
well in that case, $30 for 1gb on EDGE might not do me too bad. What are the speeds that you're getting with Rogers on EDGE?
Can't test at the moment as my backup phone only has GPRS.
But when I was using EDGE on my Touch Pro the speeds were pretty decent. Average pages load reasonably fast using Opera.
Roger 3G
Rogers 3G network is down, it has been down for the last month and a bit, they are trying to fix stuff so they turned it of and only the 2G network is working at the moment. It is not your devices.
They are not sure when it will be up again
coolturbog, I think you're right - I haven't had 3G on my Kaiser for at least a month.
Other writers are saying that the X1i completely lacks the 850 band. Although the software (WWE) says it's present, it's not.
I hope that's not true.
Just tested browsing speed using i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html on Opera.
On EDGE: 110 kbps

I am getting a strong 3G signal on my Nokia E71 all the time with the descent speed of 800 kbit to 1 Mbit. And it's been like that for the last 4 months. So, your statement about Rogers network being down it's not correct. I've heard some rumors that they are not allowing Windows Mobile devices to utilize 3G speeds completely, but again - I am not sure how legitimate those obligations are. On the other hand - with Rogers monopoly in GSM arena - everything is possible....

I also tried changing between HSDPA ONLY and HSDPA/HSUPA in the Advanced settings under Start --> Settings --> Connections... (it requires a soft reset with each change), but still all I get is EDGE....
The connection settings are automatic from the "ROGERS" cellular network and the settings confirm it is using the modem "Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)".....

How did you extract it from an X1a? May you please upload the entire X1a ROM's?
I'm using the X1i in SW Ontario and I get perfectly usable 3G coverage, as I've gotten with all the SE products I've used with Rogers (K850, Z750, W760)
Just my two cents
Hello,
I'm planning on placing an online order on bestbuy.com for the Nexus S this Thursday. My plan is to ship it to a U.S. address and then pick the phone up at my leisure.
Are there any other Canadian's planning this? If so, are your plans similar or different?
I'm a US citizen but in Toronto atm, so I'll pick one up on my next weekend trip to Buffalo =)

I was considering doing that myself (as I have my enhanced driver's license), but will there be stock by next weekend? I'd rather buy it immediately and pick it up when I have time than risk not getting the phone.
I'm selling my WIND Blackberry 9700 today so I will need this phone asap.
Yea I've been worried about that as well... my only consolation I suppose is calling the best buys in the buffalo area to see if they have stock. I doubt I'll be able to reserve one since they say first come first served, but I'm not sure if that only applies to launch day or not. I have other things to do in Buffalo as well so it's more of an added bonus for me, I just really hope that bonus will be there =D

Will the Nexus S work on Rogers/Fido properly? A Craigslist seller is telling me it will only get 2G on Rogers/Fido, and it'll work fully on Wind/Mobilicity. Please clarify guys, thank you.
It would appear that is correct. The Nexus S supports AWS 3G on a specific band, and it seems Rogers and Fido do not operate on this band. Since I'm in the US, I'm no expert, but it would appear so, based on a Google search (I found this) and it looks like Wind/Moblicity do operate on the correct band.
Your best bet is to pull up the specs of the phone and call your carrier and ask if they support the type of 3G that the Nexus has, by giving them the bands it supports.

it's currently the best phone for Wind or MobilityCity, as there are no better choices out there for AWS (1700+2100)

I bought one in Toronto. No need to import it. I used it with Rogers. No problem but no 3G. I took a Wind Mobile account and while it gave me 3G, it gave me nothing but problems. Sending text messages was impossible and I kept losing the network. With Rogers it's perfect except that it's Edge. That really is no big deal to me. Edge is pretty fast and I use WiFi as much as I can. It's a nice phone. It's a Galaxy S running 2.3. That's what it is.

haha, well considering its WIND that would need to be narrowed down I hear the same old complaint of spotty reception every day from a friend who lives in the building next to me. However according to him its not that bad to consider paying a bit too much to others. I am most concerned for data consistency compared to voice as I use data heavily. Infact I probably see my laptop once a week only lol.

I have one working with Mobilicity in Toronto. It is working perfectly esp with the $40 unlimited everything plan.
Locally there's some HD-2 seller's on craigslist that claim that their HD-2's are connecting to the New T-Mo 4G network.
For example: http://orlando.craigslist.org/mob/2168051796.html
Is it true? I am using the Nexus One but I am considering seriously buying a HD-2 because they are selling cheap these days.
Just want some clarification.
Thanks.
Doubtful, the HD2 is not 4g capeable to my knowledge. I know T-Mobile has renamed their data packages to 4G unlimited media but I spoke with a rep last night for another issue and they assured me that this don't mean you will recieve 4G and you would need a capable 4G device...the HD2 is not 4G capable.
Nope not possible..Our HD2's can go up to 3.5G but that's about it. There is an H for 3.5G and an H for 4G. The H doesn't mean 4G on our phones. HD2 doesn't exploit the full benefits of HSPA+ It is definitely faster than 3G but not full board..Our version of HSPA is a lot faster than 3G especially upload speed wise

I got a text when they first broke out with "4G" saying that my phone would support it. Since it came out I have noticed a serious pick up in speed. My wife has a MT4G and our speed is about the same. Not sure what the other guys are talking about but from an extremely non-technical point of view, I would say yes based on the text I received and MY personal experience. I also noticed Orlando was on the list and I vacationed there in Dec., my wife and I both got the HSPA+ service while we were there, just FYI. If you are thinking about getting one to take advantage, you will notice a considerable difference.

You have an HD2. NO HD2 in the world is 4G capable. Our phones use HSDPA. Their phones use HSPA+. The HD2 does NOT have the hardware for 4G. It will never have it.

I think my post was pretty clear in saying I received a text from T-Mobile stating that my phone would support the new network, and was also pretty clear that I said I am not sure if it "technically" is 4G, but I again reiterate that it is a considerable bump in speed, and that is undeniable. To each his own but I love my HD2 on the new network (as I had it well before the roll out) and to the OP, you won't regret the purchase.

Sure, and a edge phone is also supported on a 3g network lol.
When there is 5g, you will even be able to call and use data. Only not at same speeds. Don't misinterpr.

Thanks for the information guys, I will search for one now. Of course I want it to run Android and not winmo on it.
Thanks added to everyone that replied.
While you will not get HSDPA+ speeds which is Tmobile 4G you do benefit from having a tower upgraded to HSDPA+ with higher transfer speeds approaching the 7.2mbps HSDPA theoretical max and lower latency.

SO YOU MEEN MAH T-MOBILE WING CAN GET DA 3GEES? HOORAE!!!
To sum up this thread because some people are going to get mislead (or still don't understand) T-Mobile has 3G, 3.5G and 4G, the HD2 is a 3G phone with HSDPA capabilities (3.5) and I believe the HD2 is capable of 7.2Mb down and 2Mbit up.
The TEXT you receive saying you're 4G COMPATIBLE does not mean you're 4G capable, it means that because T-Mobile upgraded to 4G, you can still use the network (some older phones supposedly wouldn't work when they upgraded and they got free upgrades [my girlfriend was one of them who had this happen even though her phone was still working])
The HD2 as said is not and will never be 4G capable, the HARDWARE doesn't support it.
3.5G is more than enough for anything you need on the HD2 (or anything), you don't have video conferencing so it shouldn't matter to you (unless you get or make one of those mirror attachments).
That HD2 you see is nothing special, it's just an MDJ kernel (capable of those 1536Mhz speeds you see) with someone who doesn't know what 4G actually is and thinks the "H" icon means 4G instead of 3.5G.
Either way, get the HD2, it's worth it.

True, maybe someone on Craigslist will find the setting to unlock our Quad-Core 28nm ultra-low power consumption processor that is hidden beneath secret features!
Only Edge working on EU LEO in the USA T-Mobile Network Why???
Hi Guys,
I have a speed problem on my HD2 while I am connected to the US T-Mobile network. (In Germany I have O2 everything is working fine.) I bought a prepayed sim card at the Time Square New York. My HD2 was original from Germany T-Mobile. I know there are 2 different HD2, a US version and a European version.
I have this Bootloader running:
PB81100 HX-BC
SPL-3.03.000 XE
MicroP(LED) 0x05
MicroP(TOUCH) 0x40
My Radio is:
R 2.15.50.14
Protokoll Version:
G 15.42.50.11U
3.14.04666
My Rom is:
Artemis 54.0 GER
I also use Android from SD-Card there I have the same speed "only Edge"
I think I need a diffrent Radio to get connected to the T-Mobile US, am I right? I understand your discussion here about the speed 3G or 4G. I would be happy with 3G even if the network provide 4G. So that is not my problem. Is there somebody who had the same problem? Or does anybody know how to get the US T-Mobile running fast Data connection on a EU LEO??
Thank you for help.
dyoll
usually an andriod built would tell u the requirements and which radio u have to have to use their built. i dink ur radio is fine believe mines is that version
I am downloading the T-Mobile US Stock ROM 3.14.1 from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655653
It takes some time with "Edge"
Do you guys think I can flash a T-Mobile US Stock on my EU Leo?

I don't think so, because the EU models have less internal RAM so a stock Tmobile ROM won't fit, unless someone out there cooked it down to use extended partitions. However there are many really good ROMs that will work on your machine. I"m running DL DesireZ, and very happy with it.
What company is better in date and had major coverage and 4g????
it depends.. where you live and who has a better coverage. They all have pros and cons... hard to cover in one tread.
I'd sum it up to
T-mobile, best customer service and good 4g but small service area.
Sprint, Terrible customer service, decent 4g, medium service area
Verizon, Fair customer service, Networks huge, not sure if 4g/LTE is out yet (I dont pay attention to them).
ATT, Meh customer service, they're very business oriented and not too good about actually listening to your problems but efficient enough, 4g is coming or may be out I know its sometime soon either way, Network is only bested by Verizon.
sprint has a nice 69.99 everything plan
Oh
I live south of california just wanna know wat company had the best speed on internet
Verizon has a Nazi stranglehold on where I live, so...
Heil Big Red.
Verizon for orange county for me atleast.

Sounds like it's nailed!
Even though regions of the country dramatically impact a carrier's strength (probably because of the local carrier the big ones acquired), in my mind z33dev33l has it nailed.
I have been VERY happy with T-Mobile (price, customer service, quality of connection in my area), but they need to widen their 4G (and even 3G) coverages without getting greedy and without relaxing on their terrific customer service.
Everybody I know with Sprint and most people I know with ATT complain about them, and Verizon is a royal pain if you are trying to call from inside an office building. Around my office, there are two distinct groups huddled outside: the smokers and the Verizon customers. OK, so the Verizon customers stay inside next to the windows during bad weather, but you know what I mean. My boss, a Verizon customer, makes me take my phone with us to lunch in the cafeteria because he can't make a reliable call, but I can.

Don't forget to add $10 extra for 4g and now for what they call premium 3g!
I like T-Mobile, just wish they would grow the network faster.
At&t for now!!!
i think - currently at&t is the best choose
Kotake
T-Mobile for customer service & price, coverage limited if you're in a rural area
Around where I live (Dallas, TX), T-Mobile rocks all the other providers when it comes to 3G speeds. I get constant full bars (no matter where I am), and I've done speed tests with my 2 of my friends who conveniently have Verizon, and AT&T.
Verizon Speedtest - 1.33 down, .28 up on an iPhone.
AT&T Speedtest - 1.26 down, .55 up on an iPhone.
T-Mobile Speedtest - 4.5 down, 2.2 up on a Samsung Vibrant.
Now I don't know if it's hardware related or something with Android owning iOS, but T-Mobile had really improved speedtests.
Best part is, T-Mobile doesn't charge roaming, so I can go where-ever the **** I want, and not get charged for calling, using data, or anything.
Tmo is the most open source, supportive of modding efforts and has their own github than any of them. and they go with vanilla android and defer to google rather than try to meddle with the software (more than the other three)
Well which ever carrier you choose don't choose At&t. One of their towers that provides data coverage to the little Italy section of the Bronx has been broken since 2/1/11 and despite numerous calls from my self and undoubtedly many others they have yet to fix it.
I've had sprint in the past but they don't work at my office either so i'll be giving Tmobile a try.
I agree at&t full digital.. talk and net at the same time... spend time in Socal and Nocal
I've had AT&T and Verizon and my boss has had Sprint and Verizon, we both agree that you get the best bang with Verizon. Of course, it tends to be more expensive.
check out opensignalmaps.com for the best coverage in your area, this was not an ad-spot, it is a fantastic crowd-sourced website.

you put in your location, and it shows you which company is best for your area, just play around on the website a little bit and look at places you travel the most. It can show 2G, 3G, and 4G coverage (if your provider has 4G).
I just learned that the Verizon version comes SIM unlocked and should work on T-Mobile and AT&T. Anyone here using it on T-Mobile? What are your results? I know LTE is a no-go, but do you get decent speeds in a refarmed area? I can't find any T-Mobile versions on Craigslist, but there are a ton of Verizon versions for pretty cheap so I was thinking of snatching one up if you guys have had any luck.

Actually I'm pretty sure u can use lte on Tmo as they use aws bands for lte which is one of the 2 bands the vzw model supports. If u go to the g2 Wikipedia page it shows compatible bands for all varients

While I still have unlimited data on Verizon, I know it won't last forever, so I bought a SIM and activated it on the $30/mo plan. Today is the first day with it, and while I don't get coverage at work which I already knew, GPRS and EDGE seem to work, just very, very slowly. I went into an LTE area and I did not have LTE, but had HSPA+ and as I drove away it switched to HSPA, then back to EDGE. While on HSPA+ I ran two speed tests, pings were around 60ms but the download speed was about 1-1.5Mbps, and upload was well under 1Mbps.
I'm running CM 10.2 (CM11 has BT issues for me), does anyone else use their Verizon phone on T-Mobile and gets better speeds? Last year I bought a Nexus 4 and in a close location I got 15-20Mbps on HSPA+, so I think it's something with this phone.
I also noticed that despite being connected to GPRS, EDGE, or HSPA+ in about phone it says the signal strength is -120dBm and doesn't move.
I think the G2 doesn't have the AWS LTE bands enable yet. Maybe in a future update.

Turns out I just didn't give it enough time. Running 12b radio and now I can access their LTE network.

How much time did you need to give it, and are there any modes that need to be enabled? I'm on stock ROM with 12b but can't seem to get past HSPA. If switch the phone to LTE/CDMA, it doesn't find any service but will find HSPA when in Global mode.
My Verizon S4 would find T-Mobile LTE when switched to LTE/CDMA, but wouldn't find the GSM networks unless switched to Global. Using the phone info app, I was able to set it to LTE/GSM auto PRL, but that app doesn't seem to work for the G2.

I think it was just because I was in a poor 4G/LTE coverage area. Later that day I went into the city and it jumped right to LTE.

I had some odd connection display issues with the stock rom from verizon.
It seems to try to check for it cdma network. And the annoying ?Sim Simbol.
I just flashed the t-mobile stock rom with the flex patch.
Been using it as if its a tmobile phone.
Blazingfast stable and it was dirt cheap.

So I've got a similar question, but if I got a verizon version of this phone (due to cost - the verizon one sells for ~30-50 cheaper) can I use it with straight talk for data/talking/text/mms/etc.? Or does ONLY data work when using an ATT/T Mobile sim?
My plan is to use the phone with a ATT straight talk sim card.
This is a nice bit of information considering ill be switching to T-mobile next month... so your telling me i just pop a T-mo sim in this g2 and boom thats the end of it?

Yes u can. Just bypass the activation screen with that "volume upvdown combo"(search for instructions) and u can use with verizon stock rom.
No sim unlock needed.
Flashing will make it easier to deal with stock bloatware.
Since verizon ware is pretty deep integrated.

That's great! Thanks for the Info!
I'm excited now, I will get verizon G2.. I always wanted to G2 since it came out but I had Optimus G in April 2013.. their service sucks ass >.< I just wanted a better coverage since in Hampton Roads there's more Verizon and T-mobile LTE coverage. Will it work with LTE correct? I'm thinking if it doesn't have LTE I can just pop in straight talk sim? sorry I am a total noob lol

Flash the Stock T-Mobile Rom and Patch it with the Flex Patch.
I am getting stable LTE 4G. 3G where no LTE present.
I don't know if I was on LTE on Verizon rom, I couldn't tell the antenna indication apart LOL

Can you tell me if you are getting HSPA+ in non-refarmed areas? Thinking of picking one up but not sure if I'll get HSPA+ in the 1700 areas... Just not a lot of 1900 around here.

I think It uses 1700 for the 4G ?
But when i venture towards Louisiana I loose stable 4G and i get 3G. (But then its like Ghost town of GSM towers there)
I reside in Houston Area at the moment where most parts of it are 4G/H+/LTE
The Version i want to get my hands on is the D805 it seems to match 2 antennas from T-Mobile if its the same mhz no idea.

Wow... Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.
The funny thing is even the specifications for the T-Mobile variant say nothing about 1700 either. They only talk about 1900. Yet, mine obviously works in non-refarmed areas.
You don't notice that you can't get HSPA+ less than anyone with a T-Mo device, right? All I want is for it to work just as well, not better.

It wouldn't work any worse than a Normal Tmobile phone from what I have noticed.
It does work better than a AT&T iPhone 4S variant used on Tmobile when it comes to Data.
It seems to be getting about the same performance in Data than the iPhone 5 T-Mobile Variant.
There are areas where the iPhone 5 Picks up 4G faster, there are areas where LG G2 is Faster in Download speed. (Basic Difference between phones)
But normal use I have no issues, I have not taken LG G2 on an international Trip yet.
I do use 4G Data Alot I jsut reached my 2gb mark for the month with 8 days to go.
